Back in 2013, Frozen unexpectedly became a worldwide phenomenon and audiences refused to let it go. Disney had a new cash cow on their hands, keeping the property alive over the last six years through animated shorts, Broadway plays and video game tie-ins to keep Anna and Elsa active in the public consciousness. Despite this, an eventual follow-up would have some pretty big snow boots to fill with the task of somehow building on what many feel to be a transformative approach to Disney’s princess stereotype. Much like the original film however, Frozen 2 manages to subvert expectations once again by being more than a simple cash-in. Let’s be honest; Disney could have released anything with the Frozen name attached and surely could have rode off into the sunset with hundreds of millions of dollars in hand. Instead, Frozen 2 grows up with its audience, treading the path of a completely different genre while tackling some pretty dark themes, showing that the house of mouse isn’t afraid of gambling with one of their most popular franchises. And the film is better off for it.

Anna and Elsa find themselves on a new adventure away from their kingdom.

Taking place about three years after true love between siblings put an end to the kingdom of Arendelle’s eternal winter, Princess Anna, Queen Elsa, Anna’s boyfriend and official ice salesman of the kingdom, Kristoff his reindeer Sven and Olaf, the living snowman / walking toy advertisement have spent that time living openly as a family. While Anna hopes this period of freedom with her sister and the rest of her loved ones will never end, inevitable change is on the horizon. Kristoff is trying and failing to find the right time to propose to the princess while Elsa can’t help but feel like something’s missing in her life, which is only complicated by a mysterious spirit that echoes in her ear. The echo leads her to an enchanted forest with deep ties to the kingdom’s past, inadvertently puts the kingdom in danger, (something Elsa is seemingly making a habit of), when a group of elemental spirits is accidentally released. To right this wrong, the royal family decides to lead by example by traveling deeper into the forest and bringing balance back to nature. But will Arendelle’s past catch up to its royalty, what ties does it have with their parents’ accidental death and will their connection to Elsa’s powers once again separate the sisters?

If the original Frozen could be called a modernized fairy tale, Frozen 2 takes a completely different route as a full on adventure movie. Taking us out of the kingdom and into the larger world both increases the scope of the story while allowing the characters to take on some exciting new roles throughout the course of the film. Elsa’s plot is the most familiar, who once again finds herself trying to right the wrongs that she inadvertently created, but with the theme of self discovery constantly hovering in the back of her mind. While she had her own message of acceptance in the original movie, she finds herself constantly struggling with the idea that being comfortable isn’t necessarily what is right. As her journey towards the truth behind her powers comes closer to its conclusion, the looming idea of her having to choose her true self over the family she’s grown to love is an inevitable cloud that adds gravity to the narrative as the film progresses.

Elsa’s journey of self-discovery compliments some of the best 3D animation put to film.

Anna on the other hand, was separated from her sister for so long up until the end of the first film that now she never wants to be away from her sister’s side to the point where it’s clear she’s clinging way too hard. When the deep love they share for each other breaks down into co-dependency, the younger sibling is constantly in over her head in her attempts to prove she’s just as capable as her sister more out of fear of losing her than doing what’s best for herself or her family. This constant need to stay by her sister eventually alienates her would-be fiance, who was a constant, mostly equal partner in the first film. Finding himself routinely ignored and cast aside, the question as to whether or not there’s enough room in Anna’s heart for him begins to weigh down on the mountain man. This is all while Olaf’s own coming of age begins to shape, with him absorbing as much information as he can, (and being sure to recite it), while learning that perhaps grown-ups don’t have all the answers.

All these plot points are tied into some incredibly adult and increasingly dark themes, ranging from self discovery and learning to let go, (no pun intended), to the breakdown of relationships, the death of loved ones, crippling depression, (to the point where a character contemplates being ready to die, no joke), and learning to live for yourself instead of in the service of others. Even Olaf isn’t afraid to grow up with the audience, surely mimicking many a child who went through the phase where they’re questioning everything between the two film’s release dates. All of these concepts are neatly wrapped in a fun adventure story, with some of the best 3D animation I’ve seen to date. From the effects with each of the elementals to the breathtaking Show Yourself musical number, the animation here blows the first movie out of the water, which is impressive since I think it still holds up pretty well. The sheer emotion on the character’s faces make you feel for them so deeply at a human level, (a hard task to accomplish when their eyes are about half the size of their heads.)

Scenes like Elsa’s battle with the Nokk highlight an exceedingly beautiful film.

This blow away animation is only further enhanced by watching the film in 4DX, which I found added greatly to the immersion factor thanks to its various effects. Snow is a given, with points where the theater would be sprinkled with flakes whenever the ice queen herself shows off her power. With the elementals coming into play however, water and wind especially stand out throughout the film’s run time, helping you feel like you’re on this adventure with the cast. If you decide to go this route, bring a jacket. The effects manage to emulate the film’s namesake by making the room noticeably cold thanks to the water and wind.

As expected, Frozen 2 doesn’t lack in huge musical numbers helmed by its talented voice cast. With Evan Rachel Wood joining in as Anna and Elsa’s mother in flashbacks, Kristen Bell, Adele Daz… erm… Idina Menzel and Josh Gad all shine once again. Even Jonathan Groff, a musical veteran in his own right who was woefully underused in the first film, makes up for it this time with an incredible power ballad that manages to be both hilarious and heavy at the same time. With that said, if you’re a fan of musicals, you might be disappointed in the fact that the film is really top loaded with music. The pacing feels noticeably off, with the first half hour constantly bombarding you with music, followed by the latter portion of the movie foregoing its musical roots in favor of the adventure story, which still ultimately feels rushed once it reaches its conclusion. Certain plot threads, namely Kristoff and Anna’s relationship troubles, are also lost in the shuffle, being largely forgotten about in the second half until they’re resolved in a way that feels completely unearned. It’s crazy to say this since the film is already lengthy for an animated film at about 1:45, but it really could have used another 10 minutes or so to flesh out its ambitious to-do list.

Anna showing off her Z-Crystal collection.

Is Frozen 2 as good as its wildly popular predecessor? Only time will tell how audiences react to it after it has time to settle. For my money, it’s a hard question to answer since the sequel is a vastly different movie in its own right, which Disney should be commended for when this could have easily been a success without taking any risks. What I can say is that this follow-up is a visual marvel, an emotional roller coaster and a musical triumph that finds a different way to subvert all expectations with heavy themes and self-referential humor throughout. Certain plot points aren’t fleshed out as much as they should be and the pacing feels off at points as it rushes towards its conclusion that feels a little too neat compared to its increasingly bleak narrative, but overall, it’s safe to say that we have another hit on our hands. Now get ready to get those songs stuck in your head all over again. The Panic at the Disco cover is a banger.

Will there be a Punisher Season 3? With Marvel’s deal with Netflix almost at an end (Jessica Jones Season 3 is still on its way) it appears unlikely. But we still have Season 2 to deal with so I sit down with Ian Kerner to talk through the 13 episodes story arch. Right off the bat, I say that Punisher Season 1 may be my favorite Marvel Netflix show… so is Season 2 another bad ass brawl-fest? What’s up with Billy Russo becoming Jigsaw? Is Frank in full on Punisher mode when we meet him? Is this season as solid as the first? Where does it rank amongst the other Marvel Netflix shows? And what might be the future for these characters after Netflix? Ian and I do a deep dive through all these subjects so get ready and here is your SPOILER WARNING!

Trivia

  • it is loosely based on the first two books in The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, a series of five novels that are, in turn, based on Welsh mythology.
  • The first Disney animated movie to not contain any songs, neither performed by characters nor in the background.
  • Known by many as “the film Disney tried to bury,” fans of the fantasy genre and this movie have tried many times to get the deleted footage restored.
  • Suspended from video release for several years, due to its dark content.
  • First full-length Disney animated movie since Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) to have completed scenes cut before release.
  • Tim Burton, who worked as a Conceptual Artist on this movie, wanted to incorporate minions of the Horned King that were akin to the “facehuggers” from the Alien film franchise. Some samples of his work can be seen on Disney’s 2000 DVD of this movie.
  • This movie is notable for being the first full-length Disney animated movie to incorporate computer graphics imagery (CGI) in its animation. The CGI was utilized for a lot of the special effects, which included the bubbles, a boat, a floating orb of light, the Cauldron, the realistic flames were seen near the end of the movie, and the boat that Taran and his friends used to escape the castle
  • The production of this movie can be traced back to 1971 when Walt Disney Pictures purchased the screen rights to Lloyd Alexander’s “The Chronicles of Prydain.” This movie took over twelve years to make, five years of actual production, and cost over twenty-five million dollars. Over one thousand different hues and colors were used, and thirty-four miles of film stock was utilized.
  • Ralph Bakshi was approached to be involved with this movie in 1979 after the success of his fantasy film Wizards (1977), and his animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings (1978). He turned it down, believing his style is far too mature for a Disney movie for family entertainment.
  • Various members of Disney’s “Nine Old Men,” as well as Don Bluth, took stabs at making this movie during the 1970s.
  • According to Producer Joe Hale, “When (Jeffrey) Katzenberg first screened the film, he told us to cut it by ten minutes. Roy (Disney) and I got together and found some scenes we could get rid of, that didn’t affect the story that much.” When they ran it again for Jeffrey Katzenberg, and the film finished, he asked Roy Edward Disney, “Is that ten minutes?” When Disney replied, “No, it was only around six minutes.” Katzenberg stated, “I said ten minutes!” Hale continued, “Eventually he cut out about twelve minutes, which really hurt the picture.”
  • Four months before the film’s release, The Samuel Goldwyn Company had released The Care Bears Movie (1985) which was made by the much smaller company Nelvana. It only cost $2 million but made $23 million at the box office. By contrast, The Black Cauldron cost $44 million but only made $21.3 million. This alarmed many Disney animators and raised questions about the future of the department.

Well, it took 10 years and 3 phases in the making, but Avengers Infinity War is now closer than ever.

It seems as though we’ve known about this movie since the start of the MCU, just patiently biding time until we get up to this point. While other companies try and rush out cinematic universes for quick cash, they’ve all paled in comparison to the time, care, and planning that goes into the MCU. The first official trailer for the film dropped just this morning and fans are already going nuts. The video already has over 10 million views and been trending like crazy. No trailer play by play this time, just sit back and enjoy the trailer. Avengers Infinity War will release on May 4th, 2018.

It’s my pleasure to introduce the Geekscapists to Lauren and Katie of the K-Lo Sketch Show! I’ve been saying it for a long time Lauren and Katie are the two funniest people I know… and they’re also the most driven. Every month, they put on a brand new, 2-person improv, sketch and variety show from the ground up: the K-Lo Sketch Show! And it really is a pretty amazing show (which now regularly plays to a standing room only crowd)! On this episode, Katie, Lauren and I talk about the appeal of Macaulay Culkin, the recent eras of comedy films, Katie’s ‘Overwatch’ habits and Lauren’s past as a beauty queen and a variety of Disney princesses. We also discuss the K-Lo Sketch Show’s worst performance ever… and why they would do it all over again! It’s gonna get low, low, low, low, low on a new Geekscape so enjoy!

Well, looks like the time has finally arrived.

Announced just a couple of hours ago, Disney will be releasing the first public teaser for The Incredibles 2 sometime tomorrow on Saturday, November 18th. The announcement was just a short video with text with a brief Jack Jack laugh at the end, but nonetheless, people are excited. If there’s only one sequel that people have wanted Pixar to make in the midst of all their other completely unnecessary sequels, this one was the most necessary and seemed to have the most potential. What are your thoughts on the original Incredibles? Are you excited about the sequel? Tell us in the comments below!

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ has arrived and it is glorious! Crammed to the gills with action, humor, massive set pieces and wonderful character moments, Thor’s 3rd solo film is widely regarded as his best yet. Do we agree? I sit down with Ian Kerner for another Geekscape special to discuss the cameos, Thor VS Hulk, Hela’s status as one of the best villains in the MCU, the adaptation of ‘Planet Hulk’, how ‘Thor: Ragnarok’ fits into the wider MCU, what it means for ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and so much more! You know Ian is going to bring the knowledge and there is a LOT to talk about this film so listen up and enjoy!

Star Wars has been in a big mess lately.

While Episode VII re-ignited the long dormant franchise after the prequel plague, it seems like every week now there’s some sort of drama going on behind the scenes. From Rogue One’s extensive reshoots, the untimely death of Carrie Fisher, the firing of Phil Lord/Chris Miller from the Han Solo standalone film, and Colin Trevorrow’s removal from Episode IX, the beloved series has had more downs than ups recently. However, it seems like they’re finally coming up from the water to breathe easy for once.

Just announced, J.J Abrams will officially be returning to the writer and directors chair for the 2019 film. Some might be a bit hesitant as many heavily criticize Abrams for simply remaking A New Hope, but personally, The Force Awakens had better characters, even with a somewhat recycled story (Which is still a good story.) Even though this is good news, Kathleen Kennedy and the crew aren’t completely out of the woods; The Last Jedi has a good amount of people nervous about it, and the Han Solo film is still a never-ending dumpster fire. What do you think? Was this a good or bad move? Tell us in the comments below!

When we finished with Star Wars Rebels at the end of season two, we were left at an incredibly compelling point in Star Wars lore. Ahsoka Tano, Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice who was introduced in the Clone Wars animated film and TV show, was last seen locked in combat with her former master in the form of Darth Vader. Darth Maul had emerged from hiding in an attempt to take in the Rebels lead, Ezra Bridger, in as his apprentice while advancing a then unknown goal. Ezra kept the Sith Holocron that Maul was after, hinting at a potential turn to the dark side of the force, while his master, Kanan Jarrus, had been blinded by the former Sith Lord. Things looked pretty bleak for the Ghost crew as we stepped into season three, a more well rounded, but ultimately inconsequential chapter for the group of rebels. With that said, it’s not to say that there wasn’t plenty of compelling material filling up the 23 episodes, but most of the highlights revolved around the characters we’ve come to know outside of the show rather than the ones introduced within it.

The season starts off with one of its highest points, exploring the fallout of the events between Maul and the Jedi of the Ghost crew. With Kanan blinded, he has essentially resigned as the combat leader of the group, leaving Ezra to fill his shoes. Sporting a new, more mature look, the Padawan has been successful in his new role, but this is partially due to him seeking guidance from the Sith Holocron in secret. Seeking guidance, Kanan eventually finds a way to adapt to using The Force as his sight and uncovering a Jedi Holocron to offset the influence of the Sith. When it seems like Ezra’s potential fall has been averted, who would return but the one who was seeking to corrupt him in the first place. After taking his friends hostage, Maul forces Ezra to use the both Holocrons to unlock both of their memories of the secrets they contain. When it’s all said and done, all signs point to one planet, a desert world with twin suns…

This sets up the much talked about return of Obi-Wan Kenobi, which pays off at the end of the season when the two rivals have one final duel, finally tying up a long lasting loose end. But aside from a handful of episodes, Maul never makes another appearance. Considering his importance in the previous season and the start of this one, it was strange that he ultimately becomes a footnote seemingly written in for the purpose of being written out. Ezra’s more mature personality fades pretty quickly, with little reference to a potential turn after the first three episodes, rendering one of the most anticipated cliffhangers from the previous season moot.

Instead, the main plot of the season focuses on the war with the Empire, or more specifically, against Grand Admiral Thrawn. As an immensely popular character from the now non-canon Extended Universe, officially bringing him into the fold came with high expectations. The master strategist is as cold and calculated as you would expect, developing into a fun antagonist for Hera, the leader of the Ghost Crew who often took a backseat to the Jedi in the past. As the polar opposite of the Rebel leader both in demeanor and tactics, Thrawn always feels like he’s one step ahead of our heroes, as if anticipating Hera’s small victories building a path for him to crush the resistance under his boot. Even with former enemy, Agent Kallus, acting as a double agent after secretly siding with the Rebels as a result of his meeting with crew member Zeb Orrelios in season two, (still one of my favorite episodes of the whole series), the whole season builds to what could be Thrawn’s ultimate victory.

And yet, it never comes. In fact, the big finale just feels like every other episode, except Thrawn acts frustrated instead of stroking his chin while touting his mental superiority when he’s ultimately defeated. If I had one major complaint about this season, it’s that it felt largely inconsequential. The Rebels had their liberation of Lethal, Ezra’s home world, delayed, but not halted. Thrawn wasn’t captured, and is confirmed to return for the show’s fourth and final season. The crew is largely in the same shape it was in when the season started aside from the loss of a core side character, and with the exception of the death of Maul, you could seemingly start season 4 and not realize you missed a whole season of content. While that sounds harsher than I mean it, there is one character who is an exception to the season’s rule…

Enter Sabine Wren, the Mandalorian youth who struggles with her role when it comes to uniting her people after fleeing from them when they had sided with The Empire. After a double cross from the captured Mandalorian warrior Fenn Rau from last season leads to the pair discovering his crew either dead or on the side of the Empire after vowing to be a neutral party, Rau then joins the team, becoming a sort of mentor to Sabine as she’s drawn closer to returning home. It’s not until an unexpected encounter with Maul that she confronts her true destiny, obtaining an ancient weapon that legends say would unite all of Mandalore when a leader with the blade emerges. This Darksaber leads to one of those moments that I didn’t know I wanted to see until now, which was Sabine being trained by Kanan and Ezra as if she were a Jedi. While still unsure about her ability to lead her people by season’s end, it’s a bittersweet moment when Sabine leaves the crew in order to re-establish her relationship with her family. It doesn’t seem to be long lasting by the time the season comes to a close, but who’s to say what will happen between the two seasons?

Watching Sabine’s character growth throughout these episodes was the peak of the season for me. Seeing non-Jedi take center stage is always appreciated, but seeing a non Force wielder show signs of becoming just as proficient as they are in combat with her own special weapon is something that I want to see more of in future episodes. After all, the show started off as a coming of age story for both Sabine and Ezra before the latter took on more of a central role, so it was great to see that there are still plenty of interesting stories to tell when it comes to Sabine and Mandalore.

While the overall story didn’t move too much by the end of the season, it was appreciated that almost every episode did contribute either to the overall plot, or to Star Wars lore in general. Throughout the season, we see how Wedge Antilles defected from the Empire to the Rebellion, what the transition looked like as Saw Gerrera, (voiced by a returning Forest Whitaker from Rogue One), transformed from the no nonsense soldier in The Clone Wars to the radical freedom fighter during his days in live action, a sadly nostalgic ending to the war between the Separatist droids and the Jedi when the crew comes across an abandoned planet full of robots who couldn’t let the Clone Wars go, and a few humorous filler episodes focusing on the Rebels versions of C-3Po and R2-D2, AP-5 and Chopper. But most importantly, nearly every episode was exciting to watch, even if the ultimate payoff falls flat.

Once the episodes wrap up, the Blu-Ray edition has a wide variety of special features to go through, including the return of Rebels Recon, the post show making of and discussion featurettes, and timeline showing how Rebels fits into Rogue One. Exclusive to the Blu-Ray copy are audio commentaries for five key episodes, an in depth explanation of the history of Mandalore and where Sabine fits into its tumultuous history, a feature exploring Grand Admiral Thrawn’s reputation and his possible role in the future of the franchise, an overview of the rivalry between Obi Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul, and an interview with Forest Whitaker about his take on Saw Gerrera in both Rebels and Rogue One. These are all must watch segments for any Star Wars fan who either wants to be introduced to some of the content outside of the films, gain additional insight about some of the world’s side characters, or teased by what may come going forward.

Overall, Star Wars Rebels season 3 was a more consistent, often compelling season that fails to accomplish anything meaningful once the final episode wraps up. Especially coming off of last year when we were left with Maul resurfacing and a duel between master and apprentice that we’ve been waiting for for years, this year felt solid, yet anticlimactic. It does have its highlights, including the tense final duel between Kenobi and Maul, seeing younger versions Gerrara and Antilles as they find their role in the rebellion, and Sabine’s excellent story arch. As we head into the fourth and final season, I’m concerned that the show will have trouble tying up all of its loose ends. What will happen with Thrawn? Ahsoka wasn’t seen all season, so what happened between her and Vader? With Luke and now Rey being “the last Jedi”, what is going to happen to Ezra and Kanan? And what role will Sabine play as she continues towards uniting Mandalore? That’s a lot of ground to cover, some of which I wish was resolved in this season, but what we did get was an exciting watch for those who want to tie up the story between the prequels and sequels, or for those who just want to watch a cool sci-fi cartoon. That alone is worth the purchase.
