As announcements roll out of D23 there’s only one that’s worth caring about. It’s the announcement that Disney will be closing down the Great Movie Ride next month. This news has me more depressed than any celebrity death in the last decade.

Every time I went to Disney I would ride this 3-4 times. It is without a doubt my favorite ride. What’s weird is that it’s one of those rides that you either LOVE or you never even knew existed.

The Great Movie Ride was the primary attraction when Hollywood Studios (at the time MGM Studios) originally opened it’s doors. The Dark ride takes you through various infamous movie moments ranging from Singing in the Rain and Casablanca to more recent (at the time) films like Alien and Raiders of the Lost Ark. The ride ends with each car enter a giant movie theater and being presented with constant stream of the greatest moments of cinema over the last 100 years.

I recall my senior year riding it with dreams of California and a film career in my heart. As I was overcome with each movie quote and iconic shot I began to cry. I openly wept to myself. It was a reminder of what I wanted so badly. I fantasized about the day I would be on the ride and see/hear a moment from something I wrote.

Last year I rode it for (unknowingly) the last time and cried again. I am no longer pursing my filmmaking dream, but the ride reopened that desire. I remember looking at how beautifully it showed the power of iconic film and felt that desire to create reignite in my heart.

It’s depressing that it’s leaving. It actually hurts. For me a Disney trip won’t ever feel quite like Disney again without this ride that brought me so much joy and inspiration. If comments from fellow Disney geeks in my life and online are to be taken seriously, I’m not alone in this sadness. People are not happy at this news.

It’s doubtful we will be able to stop this from happening. August 13th the ride will close it’s doors for the last time. I won’t get to take one last ride on it in time. If you do have a chance in the next month, ride it one last time for me.

So long Great Movie Ride. Thank you for years of service and inspiration. Thank God people have filmed POVs of their rides and uploaded that to YouTube.

James Gunn’s new film “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2,” opening this weekend, brings back everything good we loved about the first one, and then some.

What’s on most people’s minds who are intending to see GOTGVol2 is if it will be as good as the first one.

Let’s face it, that’s a tall order to fill for writer/director James Gunn and the other ten people who share the writing credit for this sequel (seriously, ten people).

The first film pretty much embodied near perfection and landed on many top ten lists for fans and critics alike in 2014. Gunn proved he was adept at instilling a retro feel mixed with space opera camp and fans ate it up.

“Volume 2” continues the story with the theme of talented misfits doing their best to one-up each other as they help Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) discover his origins. Gunn recaptures a lot of what made the first film so memorable and injects it into a new story that elaborates on the main characters and adds a few news ones.

Not a lot of time has gone by since the first story ended. Peter Quill is pretty happy with his reputation as Star Lord; The sort-of human from Terra who saved the Galaxy alongside his team. However, when he gets the opportunity to get to know his biological dad, Ego (Kurt Russell), he starts thinking about what he might have missed out on as a kid. That dynamic between father and son is part of the emotional narrative of the film.

In this outing, GOTGVol2 focuses more on the dynamic between the characters as we get to know more about why they do what they do, especially Yondu (Michael Rooker), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and new character Mantis (Pom Klementieff).

Like the first film, every character gets their moment, especially baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) who captures the big screen in several comedic scenes that will probably be many people’s favorite part. However, the film has so many solid characters that not one really stands above another, a true ensemble.

A notable performance from the versatile Michael Rooker as space pirate/ Ravager “Yondu” is a stand out amongst a fine cast, including a small role for Sylvester Stallone and Jeff Goldblum who seem headed for more in the Marvel Universe.

In a film of mostly positive there are a few negatives including the strange accent that Klementieff used for Mantis. Reminiscent of an Asian American speaking English with a heavy Asian accent. The film has a lot going on, including a ton of Easter Eggs, but at times almost seems a little bloated but it’s hard to fault the sequel because it moves along quite fast except the third act feels just a tad too long. All in all, these are nit picky compared to the overall quality of the film.

You may recall that the soundtrack “Volume 1” was almost like a character unto itself in the first film, and was a big part of Quill’s motivation. “Volume 2” nearly achieves that same vibe in this film however it seems Gunn might have chosen to put slightly less emphasis on music in order to focus the narrative a bit more on character interaction and smartly so.

Sequels tend to focus too much on being exactly like the first. Gunn is astutely aware of that and has created a follow up that embodies the essence of the first while creating enough of it’s own narrative to be on nearly equal ground. There is a bit of a lag in act 3, and visually a heap of action that becomes almost dizzying in 3D, however the film lands lightly on its feet with just enough sentimental emotion to justify any slip. Easter Eggs abound and GOTGVol2 fits nicely into the Marvel Universe as did the first one.

UPDATE: Right after writing this original article, news came out that Seth Rogen and Bille Eichner will be voicing Timon and Pumba for the film. It seems as though they are still getting mostly new people for these roles. Fingers crossed for Irons still.

Jon Favreau’s live action adaption of The Lion King finally has a release date!

While not necessarily highly anticipated, people seem interested in seeing how the Iron Man series director can handle one of Disney’s biggest animated juggernauts after succeeding pretty well in the live action fairy tail space with last years The Jungle Book.  The film is set to STAMPEDE (sorry too soon?) into theaters on July 19th 2019. Not much is known about the film still, but we do know that Donald Glover will be voicing Adult Simba, as well as the legendary James Earl Jones reprising his role as the king of the pride lands himself, Mufasa. No word on if Jeremy Irons will return as Scar, but we can dream at how great that’d be until Disney cruelly rips it away from us. Are you excited for this remake? Tell us in the comments and check out Favreau’s tease below!

With Star Wars being all the rage, now is the perfect time to review Lucy Collin’s crochet kit, Star Wars Even More Crochet. The kit is a sequel of sorts to the popular Star Wars Crochet, which was released in 2015. And while the original kit was dedicated strictly to the classic trilogy, this new release features a mix of characters from the original films as well as those found in The Force Awakens.

The box containing the goods is quite fun by itself, with color photos of the amigurumi (crochet dolls) from the pattern book. Characters can be found not only on the front and back of the box but also two of the sides, giving it a festive air.

Found in the enclosed book are patterns for a Jawa, BB-8, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Kylo Ren, Obi-wan Kenobi, Lando Calrissian, Admiral Akbar, Nien Nunb, the four members of the Cantina band, and Greedo.

The kit includes the materials needed to make a Jawa and BB-8, even safety eyes and stuffing.

Sounds great, right? And it is, in theory. However, I encountered several issues with the yarn and the hook. For starters, two important things to keep in mind when crocheting amigurumi is that your gauge is tight enough to keep the stuffing from showing through and that the yarn weights are the same. I noticed right off that the weight for the black and brown yarns for the Jawa were different. I ended up using some yarn from my stash instead (both chosen were worsted weight).

Next off, the crochet hook provided was crooked when I took it out of the box (you can’t tell in the photo because it is facing up). And while the hook was still usable, I did find it very uncomfortable to hold after more than 20 minutes.

It is a shame about the pack-ins because the book for the most part is great. The patterns were well-written and I did not encounter any errors. The only problem was the Techniques and Terminology section, which gives a rundown on the different stitches found in the patterns. I have been crocheting a long time and thankfully knew how to do all of the required stitches already but even I was confused by some of the diagrams used in that section. If you know what you are looking at, you eventually have a moment of “I see what you did there” but I can’t see it being of any help to someone unfamiliar with the techniques. I guess that is where Youtub comes to the rescue.

Here is my finished project, Martini the Jawa. He didn’t take long to make. I did have the split the crochet sessions into bits because my hand really did not like working with that bent hook. But all told, I estimate it took me between two to two and a half hours to finish. Not bad at all.

I am going to give the kit as a whole a 2 out of 5. For $24.99, it should come with usable supplies. The pattern book on its own earns a 4 out of 5. The patterns are relatively simple with a great blend of characters from the series’ past and present. The only problem was the not-helpful Techniques section. Other than that, it was super fun.

After months and months of painful and agonizing waiting, we’ve finally gotten the trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi! The teaser mostly echoes The Force Awakens teaser where you see a brief scene of something happening before the camera flashes to something else. Even though they do go pretty quickly, there are some really cool shots such as Rey running towards someone head on with her Lightsaber and some more space battles (which Episode 7 was sorely lacking). What do you think? Tell us your thoughts on the trailer below!

A video was circulating of a man cosplaying as Powerline at Wondercon last week. I shared it on my Facebook wall which lead to a friend sending me the following video.

This reminded me of another video I saw of someone re-enacting the opening scene from A Goofy Movie. It made me realize that every time I met someone who liked Goofy Movie we’d both get excited and geek out that we both knew it existed.

Here’s the weird thing about it though… almost everyone I know has seen and loved this movie. I’ve noticed the same situation come up with the movie Heavyweights (which is also great). It seems that every person between the ages of 22 and 35 saw A Goofy Movie and thought that they were the only person to see it. As if we all collectively discovered a secret Disney film.

Maybe because we were ashamed to admit how much we loved Disney movies back then. Which is dumb of us because I don’t care who you are, part of you will always love Disney movies.

This past week I’ve been listening to Disney music in my car. It’s been a mixed bag of emotions. One of the weirder parts about being an overly sensitive and emotional person with anxiety and depression is your ability to smile, laugh and cry simultaneously.

On one hand Disney makes me smile. It makes me think of my vacations to DisneyWorld. The most recent one was in this past October with my family. It was one of the best vacations I ever had. I probably was to proud to say that to anyone in my family, but it really was. Just spending time with the people I loved the most, surrounded in a place filled with so much joy … it’s all the things vacations are made to be.

Disney trips are difficult. They’re long and more work than relaxing. But when you’re standing next to the greatest people in the world watching those fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle it’s impossible to not love the place, even for just a second.

The time prior to that was my senior class trip. It was just a few weeks before graduation and very few of my friends attended the trip. I ended up making friendships with classmates I never spoke to. They are now among my closest friends in the world. Another example of the power of Disney.

This is footage from my class memory tape edited by me

So why the sadness?

Because previous to these two trips… my Aunt Lisa had been with us on every trip to Disney. She loved Disney. When I was in college my aunt was diagnosed with cancer. She was given a year and she made it six. None of us said it on our family trip this October, but she was missed.

It’s not easy continuing to live life when someone who was a part of it is no longer in it. There is forever a part of you missing when that person is gone. This is why I find myself crying my way through singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in my car on a Thursday. I probably watched Mary Poppins with my aunt more than any other movie.

It’s sad and it’s unfair. It’s always awful when someone is taken from us too soon. I was in 10th grade when my grandfather died. At the time, he was my best friend. How is that fair? How is it fair to expect a 16 year old kid to have to deal with not just his grandfather dying… but his best friend? It’s not fair that my grandmother had to bury her daughter. It’s not fair that my dad had to say goodbye to his only sibling. It’s not fair… but to quote one of the greatest movies ever made… ‘Life’s not fair princess, anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something’.

When someone is ripped from your life it leaves a painful void and you can fill that void with one of two things. You can fill it with anger and sadness and bitterness. You can curse this world for being so cruel and so unfair. Or…

Or, you can live life harder than ever to make up for the life they can’t live.

That’s the option I prefer. So I went to Disney with my family. I rode the Haunted Mansion for her. I ate at Downtown Disney and saved her a seat in my mind. I walked around Animal Kingdom with her in my heart. When I screamed on Tower of Terror I screamed extra loud for her. When I’m singing along to Beauty and the Beast in my car, I’m singing it for her.

My family is already planning another trip to Disney. I can’t wait. I can’t wait to walk through Magic Kingdom’s gates, hear that music and feel her smiling with us. My Grandfather too and countless others that I carry in my heart every single day.

May 27 marks the grand opening of a new “land” in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World: Pandora – The World of Avatar. Yes, it has been nearly ten years since James Cameron’s film, Avatar, which served as inspiration for the area, hit theaters but Disney is ready breath new life into the title and the movie’s world, Pandora. Loaded with two new attractions along with a variety of dining and shopping options, Pandora looks to be a something that sci-fi fans have dreamt of.

As you would expect from Disney, entering Pandora is an immersive experience. It is designed to make guests feel as though they truly have entered an alien planet. Pandora is “set” long after the conflict seen in the movie and the Na’vi and humans live in are now living in peace. Guests can look forward to seeing the world’s floating mountains (complete with waterfalls) and bioluminescent flora as they explore.

I know you want to hear more about the attraction so we will touch on those first. Also, I want to note that FastPass+ is available for booking for both of these attractions, provided you are visiting on or after May 27.

What I imagine to be the “E-ticket” attraction is the Avatar Flight of Passage. The thrill ride employs 3D and other special effects to give guests the feeling of riding their very own mountain banshee over the terrain of Pandora.

Pandora’s second attraction, Na’vi River Journey, can be seen in this article’s header image. The slow-moving boat ride provides up-close views of some the planet’s flora and fauna. The ride reaches its climax as the Na’vi Shaman of Songs performs a ceremony. This Audio-Animatronic figure is to scale with “real” Na’vi and measures over ten feet tall from a standing position.

Exploring Pandora is sure to build up an appetite. That is where the Satu’li Canteen located in the Valley of Mo’ara. Seeing as how you are in an alien territory, the food is certain to look a little different than what you might be used to and trust me, it does.

You can check out the full menu here but expect plenty of steamed buns (there is even a deconstructed cheeseburger one) and boba in places it has no business being. There are also several rice bowls and for the picky eaters, a less adventurous children’s menu. If all you want is a sip of something, you should check out Pongu Pongu, a specialty drink location.

So you rode rides, you ate food, what else is there? Well, shopping, of course! At Windtraders, guests will have the opportunity to view and hopefully purchase Avatar-themed products. Pandora will be the only place to buy these items. A nifty detail reported by WDW News Today is that unlike the rest of the property, Pandora will not have Disney Parks brands on their receipts and bags so as to maintain the feeling of being somewhere foreign. These items will instead carry the logo of Alpha Centauri Expeditions.

It looks as though this policy also carries over to their new merchandise. A quick look at the packaging for the new Na’vi Translator displays the Alpha Centauri Expeditions (or A.C.E.) logo in the upper right corner. We will be seeing many more of items with that image in the near future.

Disney will be churning out several new items that will interact with the world of Pandora. Remember how the landscape is bioluminescent? Imagine special shoes, and faux weapons (think spears and staves) that react to their environment. I am particularly intrigued the activity called “Banshee Connect,” in which guests can be matched to and bond with a robotic plush of the mountain banshees found in the Flight of Passage attraction. There will also be 3-D printing service called D-Tech “Avatar Me” that transforms guests into their Avatar counterparts and then prints out the result as a three-dimensional statuette.

What part of Pandora are you most excited to experience?

Disney-Pixar’s upcoming film, Coco, celebrates the culture of Mexico and Dìa de Los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.  And while the story follows the young Miguel and his adventure in the Land of the Dead, I get the feeling Dante, Miguel’s dog, will be the one stealing the show. Yesterday, Pixar released an animated short, “Dante’s Lunch – A Short Tail,” and I am smitten. The pup is so darn cute! The entire short runs just shy of two minutes and is embedded below. You have no excuse not to watch. Trust me, you will thank me later.

https://youtu.be/2GCzyZexnNE

The team behind the movie did their research, too. According to director Lee Unkrich, Dante is modeled after Mexico’s national dog, the Xolo. This breed of dog dates back to the Aztecs, who believed they were needed for spirits to make the transition to the afterlife. Even Dante’s lolling tongue is characteristic of the Xolo.

Coco is scheduled to hit theaters November 22 of this year. Are you excited for the movie? I know I am!

Back in the late 80’s/early 90’s, Capcom used to be the king when it came to making licensed video games. More specifically, games based off of the insanely popular Disney Afternoon. 4 years ago we were treated to a great DuckTales remake, but since then, not much else has happened with those beloved classics.

This morning, Capcom has announced that they’ll be keeping the classics alive as they’ll be releasing The Disney Afternoon Collection later this year. The game will release for $20 on April 18th, and will include both DuckTales,  both Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers, Tailspin, and Darkwing Duck, but there’s more to the collection than just the initial 6 games. Much akin to 2015’s Rare Replay, the collection will add additional features such as behind the scenes art, a rewind feature, and snapshot challenges including time attacks and boss rushes.

As of right now, the collections biggest downside is that it will not be releasing on the Nintendo Switch. It’s quite a head scratcher seeing as how all of these games originated on the NES. Perhaps if demand is high enough, then Capcom might consider a Switch release. Check out the trailer below, and bask in the glorious Disney nostalgia!

Briefly: Up to this point, I wasn’t fully convinced that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be able to live up to the hilarity and unexpected charm of the phenomenal first film.

Then this new full trailer debuted on tonight’s Jimmy Kimmel live, and any fears I had about the film were put to rest. This is the same gang, with the same incredible chemistry, the same dumb one-liners, and an even more adorable Groot.

Seriously, this trailer had me laughing more than most dedicated comedies. I can’t wait to get in line for this one.

You can take a look at the incredible trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theatres on May 5th.

That’s right! Even though we’re still over a year out from the end of Phase 3, Marvel has already begun filming on Avengers: Infinity War!

To celebrate, the studio has released a teaser online featuring Robert Downey Jr., Tom Holland, and Chris Pratt talking about the start of filming the movie. They talk about how The Avengers will finally team up with The Guardians to face off against Thanos. Kevin Feige also talks about how Thanos won’t be like previous Marvel movie villains, as he will actually pose as a major threat. The video ends with a short clip of the infinity gauntlet being revealed. Check out the video for more below!

For those impatient, just think of it this way. We only have 3 more films until Infinity War. You can wait 3 more films right? No? Me too, but we really have no other choice. Avengers: Infinity War will release on May 4th, 2018. Are you excited for the film? What upcoming phase 3 film are you most looking forward to? Tell us in the comments below!

A couple of days ago, Disney released the last trailer for their live action Beauty and the Beast film starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens.

While a bit hesitant about the film from the first 2 trailers, this last trailer definitely does a better job at showing better scenes with a bit more emotion from the actors. Also in the trailer is a re done version of the Beauty and the Beast song preformed by John Legend, and everyone’s favorite Final Fantasy character, Ariana Grande.

Check out trailer below. Are you excited for the film? Do you like most of these recent live action adaptions that Disney’s been making recently? Tell us in the comments below!

We are a little more than a month away to the opening day for the live-action remake of Disney’s beloved Beauty and the Beast and I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with a new plush toy! Build-A-Bear Workshop recently launched a new line of plushes and toy clothing, themed to the upcoming film and it is adorable.

Let’s start off with the leading lady, Belle, who will get a bear inspired by her as well as a her ballroom dress, sold separately. The Belle Bear, costing $25.50, has fur with sparkling gold accents as well as commemorative paw pads. Fans will notice that the Belle Dress ($18) is designed after the version Emma Watson wears rather than the traditional one. There are also matching heels for this outfit ($8.50).

I personally prefer the Beast ($28). The dude is fluffy, with a tail and a set of horns. What’s not to love? I also like that the two plushes are to scale, with Belle being 16 inches in height and Beast measuring 19 inches. Like the Belle bear, the Beast has commemorative paw pads, one bearing the film’s logo and the other with a silhouette of his castle. Beast’s Ballroom Costume ($18) is gorgeous, with tons of embroidered detail. Round out the set with a Rose Accessory ($4) and you have a collection fit for any movie fan.

What do you think of this new line? Are you excited for the upcoming film? Let us know in the comments!

Disney fans have no doubt seen those bean-shaped stackable plushes of simplified Disney characters in stores or at the theme parks. They are Disney Tsum Tsum, named for the Japanese verb tsumu which means “to stack.” Last year brought with it the very first Tsum Tsum subscription box, where exclusive mystery sets of the plushes arrived at your doorstep with the assistance of a friendly neighborhood mail carrier. This year’s subscription box was recently announced and it comes with a few twists!

While 2016’s line had a formula containing one small Tsum Tsum and a related mini Tsum Tsum, 2017 is mixing it up with four potential combinations. One is the same combo from 2016’s line. Another option is a three-piece mini set. The third option is a plush “Movie moment” (I am not entirely sure what that typically entails but I suspect it is a scene from a movie judging by the first shipment, which is a The Rescuers Movie Moment). The final combination is a six-piece of the newly-introduced 2.5-inch tall Micro Tsum Tsum plushes.

The 2017 Tsum Tsum Annual Subscription is available now, costing either $270 a year or $24.95 on a recurring 1-month plan. Shipping is included.

About a week ago, Disney announced a release window for the highly anticipated reboot for DuckTales coming summer 2017 to Disney XD. Not much was revealed other than the release window and some concept art, but now Disney decided to drop a pretty big bombshell on us this morning.

Today, the new cast of DuckTales was announced, and from what they’ve showed, this is coming along pretty nicely. Community’s Danny Pudi, will be voicing Huey, along with SNL Bobby Moynihan as Louie, and Jean Ralphio himself, Ben Schwartz as Dewey. Raising Hope‘s Kate Micucci has also been cast as Webby, but the biggest name drop today was that David Tennant, the 10th Doctor himself, will be voicing the iconic smartest of the smarties, Scrooge McDuck! Check out the video below to find out who else has been cast in the anticipated reboot, and tell us if you’re excited for this show in the comments below!

Fans of the Star Wars Universe already know that the Death Star gets destroyed in “A New Hope.” It took just two well placed torpedo shots from Luke Skywalker shot down an exhaust port, and boom, the massive structure was blown to smithereens.

In the new film from director Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” we get a departure from the traditional younger kid friendly story-telling style in lieu for a more mature style. This is war after all. The Rebels are fighting a desperate battle and the lengths they will go aren’t always pretty in their effort to defeat the Empire.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” tells the tale of what led to the rebellion having the ability to blow up the Death Star in “New Hope.” The story opens with where the Death Star originated from, who the players were that created it, and a lot more information about the capabilities of the Empire and the Rebellion, all of which really end up filling the plot holes of “New Hope” and “Empire.”

Forget the cutesy Ewoks, the stupid Jar Jar Binks, and think straight up murder in the name of the rebellion. That’s what you better strap in for when you see “Rogue One.” It’s the adult version, no holds barred, shoot-em up, taking insane chances all for the cause of breaking the Empire. Simply, it’s the Star Wars movie that all the fans of the original, now grown-up, wanted but never knew they would get!

It’s as if story writer John Knoll and Gary Whitta, plus screen writer Chris Weitz (and others, see bottom) had a check list of all the good things about the originals, like interesting settings, cool costumes, bigger than life characters, and a check list of the stupid stuff to avoid, and then went to work to write something that was equally smart and highly entertaining. Forget the choppy stunted dialogue style of the originals and think balanced. Every character with the exception of one (we’ll get to that) is dynamic and three dimensional.

Director Edwards did the same thing cutting back on sequences targeted towards kids and focusing on those moments when humor was appropriate, and avoiding cliche. “Rogue One” is all about the action. The fight sequences and fast paced story all keep you deeply engrossed. There isn’t a dull moment. Further, where “Force Awakens” was a homage to the original, this film breaks new ground while at the same time fitting incredibly well into the original mythos. In a single word, exceptional comes to mind as the film winds down and the story moves towards “A New Hope” as all wraps up nicely into a gorgeous gift to fans.

Along those same lines, the sound track is stand alone incredible with Disney call up man Michael Giacchino, who has a zillion Disney credits to his name. Yes, there’s some moments like Darth Vader’s theme in there, but this film borrows from the style of the original sound tracks, but incorporates totally worthy new pieces. Overly impressive in an age where so many films are going synthesizer/ computer created composing this ones stays traditional but also zips it up into something modern with flavors of the originals.

Character development and selection may seem a bit contrived. We’ve got the kick-ass female lead Felicity Jones, the sexy Han Solo type with the Spanish accent Diego Luna, the “IP Man” Donnie Yen (sure to play up to the massive Chinese audiences), the loyal best bud type, Wen Jiang (also Chinese), and then the adult version of C3PO , the new droid with all the snappy one-liners K-2SO played by Alan Tudyk (Firefly). Even with the main cast seemingly contrived to drive International audiences to the film, all is forgiven because the acting is superb. The exception being the character Saw Gerrera, played by veteran actor Forest Whitaker.

rsz_rogueoneforest

The character itself just doesn’t work. At first he does. His job is to be the one to rescue and raise one of the key characters. As the story evolves and we get to see more of him, he comes across as a hot mess. The costume itself just reminded me of when Whitaker played in “Battlefield Earth” (remember that piece of silliness?). Certainly a lot can be forgiven in the Star Wars Universe. Crazy alien creatures are the norm and so are cyborg baddies like Darth Vader but in comes Saw Guerra which seems cool at first but just winds up being a cliche or all the dumbness you could absorb from all seven prior films. The acting wasn’t the issue here so much, as just the character. However, it’s not enough to bring the film down even a notch.

In the bid to be more geared for adult audiences, there’s a departure from including the mainstream Jedi influence entirely in the film with just a mention here and there of the order, as well as not relying heavily on The Dark Side’s Darth Vader as the supreme villain of the film. Rather Director Edwards focuses on more of what would be good ol’ fashion human bad guys, not magical plot devices, and what comes across and smart choices for the challenges of the main cast to over-come to achieve their objective. Further, rather than leaving unrealistic jumps in the story, Edwards and writers pay attention to the steps of what it would take to accomplish the goals, in affect the story makes sense.

There’s always been a lot of leeway given in the Star Wars Universe for the story to move forward but in this film those story beats are not forgotten or ignored. They are given strict attention so that in the end you have a solid story, performed impeccably and sensibly that all incredibly aligns with “A New Hope.” That attention to story is what really sets this apart from the others and for many this will be easily be toted at the best one to date. That opinion will have to contend with the nostalgia of the originals which of course holds weight for many, but on the basis of just story for story, this one wins hands down.

As 2016 ends to make way for 2017, we are fastly approaching the DuckTales reboot.

Now the last time a network tried to reboot some of its older properties, it didn’t turn out so well *cough* PPG *cough*, but Disney is taking steps to make sure this reboot caters to both old fans of the series, but also new fans and even fans of the original comic. Earlier this year they revealed an image of the reboot featuring Donald and the original shows cast in a more stylized comic like animation (being used for the header above). Disney has now released another teaser in the same style showing off the same characters, but with one new addition. That’s right! Everyone’s favorite bumbling aviator Launchpad McQuack.ducktales-2017-launchpad

Not only that, but other returning characters include Gyro Gearloose, Duckworth, and Magica De Spell (hopefully still being voiced by the amazing June Foray). Since summer 2017 is still a ways away, Disney is still slowly rolling out info on the series, but they did leave us with a catchy little teaser. Check it out below! Are you excited about this reboot? Which characters are you hoping come back? Tell us in the comments below!

The Cars series isn’t Pixars strongest brand when it comes to movies.

While it’s merchandise selling skills are legendary, the movies always seem to come up short and seem to lack the imagination of other Pixar films. In fact most people think the Cars films were the first time where Pixar really didn’t put as much effort into this project as their others. Well, after the nightmarish car crash that was Cars 2, Pixar sets out to redeem themselves and the series with Cars 3, and it actually doesn’t look that bad.cars-3

The teaser shows Lightning Mcqueen (Owen Wilson) taking a sharp turn and then flying through the air. He’s also caught a bit on fire. The teaser ends with the tagline “Everything will change”. Even if the film goes back to being pretty mediocre next trailer, The visuals in this movie are freaking gorgeous. Check out the trailer below, and make sure to tell us what you think of the trailer in the comments.

Disney released its first full trailer for its live action Beauty and the Beast. It’s the re-telling of the classic 1991 original animated film, but on a larger, grander scale. Being the first Disney movie that was basically a musical in animation form, seeing what they have done with the technological advances is going to be fun.

In this trailer, we get glimpses of Kevin Kline who plays Belle’s father Maurice. We see what the Beast, who is played by Dan Stevens looks like and how the other characters – Lumiere, Mrs. Potts, and Cogsworth (Ewan McGregor, Emma Thompson, and Sir. Ian McKellan) are brought to life. We also see Luke Evan’s Gaston.

With the characters, we see more of the Castle and bits and pieces of the town Belle comes from. Granted it revolves around Gaston and not Belle, but regardless – the sets, along with the costumes, look marvelous.

The movie is slated to be released in March 2017. Will you be running for the theater to check out this tale that’s old as time?  Watch the trailer below and let us know what you think.

I usually like to build up to the whole “take a look a the trailer” thing but this one for Guardians of The Galaxy Vol. 2 is so good it needs no introduction.

You watched it, right? Good. So now for the summary part. This video admittedly doesn’t tip its hand in terms of plot but that is forgivable given that it is merely a sneak trailer rather than a full one. What we do see is the same humor and heart that made the original Guardians of the Galaxy so great. And come on, who didn’t miss that soundtrack?

There is clearly some romantic conflict between Peter Quill (although he prefers to known as Star-Lord) and Gamora. We also see snippets of Drax, Rocket Raccoon, Yandu, Nebula, and Baby Groot (who is adorable, by the way!). According to ComicBook.com, the film will follow the group’s journey to learn the truth about Peter’s father. There seems to be a focus on the concept of “family” with Gamora’s sister, Nebula, adding additional issues (the whole trying-to-kill-them thing).

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters May 5, 2017.

Briefly: I knew that our resident Muppet Historian, Matthew Kelly, was headed to Walt Disney World soon, and me being the Disney addicted man child that I am, I wanted to share all of the new stuff at the parks. Too much to text, I told Jonathan that I would be submitting an article about it. Here’s an excerpt from our daily staff emails.

Jonathan: We will also see a rousing article from BigYanks. What’s it called, Yanks?
Danny: It’s called “A Salute to All Things Disney, But Mostly The Muppets”.
Jonathan: Yanks, are you ready with that article?
Danny: It’s a glorious three-volume book!
Jonathan: You got a six paragraph limit.

The Muppets might be down, but they aren’t out yet.

The Muppets entered into a resurgence with the surprise hit of ‘The Muppets’ movie in 2011 written by Jason Segal. So of course the next logical thing Disney did was went ahead and green lit a sequel. This time with no Jason Segal ‘Muppets Most Wanted’ fell flat and wasn’t so well received. The film didn’t match any of the hype, charm or fandom of the first film. But still The Muppets where still in the spotlight and Disney gave the brand a second chance and went ahead with a television pilot.

The announcement of ‘The Muppets’ television show got the fans up in a frenzy and excited for something fresh. The show was being developed by Muppet Journeyman and ‘Big Bang Theory’ Co-Creator, Bill Pardy. The show brought the gang back taking on more adult themes that were similar to that of The Office and Larry Sanders Show. This left some die hards unsure what to think of it and the show was met with very mixed reviews. Some parents were even outraged that show wasn’t accessible to younger audience members, failing to realize this was a primetime show on a network, not the Disney Chanel. Even with plot changes made to try and bring the viewers it was too little too late and ABC cancelled it at the end of the season.

The Muppet’s Disney future was looking bleak.

muppets-pizzerizzo

Now news of Star Wars Land and Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studio were announced and rumors were swirling of what areas would be razed to make space. With ‘Muppets Vision 3D’ in close proximity of Star Tours it felt inevitable that the Muppets may have met their match at the theme parks. Then it was announced that the The Muppets were indeed staying and getting its own area at the park. The are would getting refurbished along with a name change, Welcome to ‘Muppets Courtyard’. One of the first changes coming soon is the conversion of the old ‘Toy Story Pizza Planet’ into the Muppets themed ‘PizzeRizzo’. The backstory being that Rizzo and has vast amount of family members are running the restaurant much like his French cousin Remy. With no other news of the fate of the remaining structures in the area, i’m hoping for an overhaul. If we can only get a updated ‘Muppet Vision 3D’ attraction similar to that of ‘Soarin’ over at EPCOT. That show is feeling very dated and the theater could use some sprucing up. This attraction was also the only way to see a living Muppet. It being a 4-D Attraction, Sweetums would make a quick appearance while the gang searched for Bean Bunny. Hopefully we can now get the characters back for meet and greets.

muppets-america-jpg

In another surprise move by Disney, they announced this fall, the Muppets will be at the Magic Kingdom Park, where they’ll take part in an all-new live show, “The Muppets Present… Great Moments in American History.”  The show will feature Sam Eagle, Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, The Great Gonzo and James Jefferson, the town crier of Liberty Square. They gather outside The Hall of Presidents to present historical tales as only they can. From the midnight ride of Paul Revere to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Muppets appear throughout the day to share with Guests, their own unique take on the founding fathers and the birth of the United States of America. The Shows had their debuts this week and were met with high praise for keeping with the ideology of the Liberty Square area  in a hysterical fashion.

Just one day later, the powers that be decided to dust off the cobwebs out of an old fan favorite and brought back the ‘Muppets Mobile Lab’ over at EPCOT. The mobile interactive show stars Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his lab assistant Beaker. The characters come to life by interacting with the crowd in simple hysterical experiments all at the expense of Beaker of course.

With such an unexpected push by the company at the theme parks the future is looking bright now for The Muppets. There is no denying that there is some money to be made with the brand but they were striking out in the movies and television department, the next logical step would be to bring back the nostalgia via appearances at the parks. I’m so ecstatic to be able to go back to the parks and catch a real life glimpse of the muppets. Heres to hoping that things take off and we get even more of The Muppets including photo-ops and special events.

As befitting the month of All Hallow’s Eve, Disney Studios gifts fans with not only an unsettling teaser trailer for their upcoming film, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but a glimpse of a movie poster as well!

https://youtu.be/1xo3af_6_Jk

The trailer is a tad more than a minute and a half but does an excellent job of, well, showing a bunch of ghostly pirates killing soldiers. Pretty dark stuff. The infamous pirate Captain Jack Sparrow also appears to play a key part in the film.

Pirates of The Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tales poster

And here is the movie’s teaser poster! The skull and crossbones definitely looks more ornate than in previous films. Check out that gemstone in the tooth. As we can see from the poster, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is set hit theaters sometime in 2017.

What did you think of the trailer? Do you plan on seeing the film? Let us know in the comments!

Fresh off the heels of  the highly successful Jungle Book adaptation this year, Disney is giving Iron Man and Jungle Book 2016 director Jon Favreau, the keys to the Disney kingdom. Today the company announced that Favreau will be heading up the live action Lion King movie. No solid release date is planned, but it’s assumed that the film will take advantage of The Jungle Book 2016’s mouth watering visuals, so that’s something to be excited for.

Are you excited for this live action adaption, or do you think that animated Disney films just don’t work out well in live action. Tell us in the comments below!

Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed another entry into the ‘Star Wars’ series of stand-alone “anthology” movies is set for release in 2020.

During the Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference, and as reported by Deadline, Bob Iger said that a writer had been hired to work on the film. That would be the third in the series that begins with the release of ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ in December 2016, and followed by the untitled Han Solo film, due for release in May 2018. There are no details yet on the film.

rogue 12

More interesting to me was his other remarks regarding the franchise during the conference, Iger said that he had recently met with Luscasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy and “started talking about what we’re going to do in 2021 and beyond”. With episodes eight and nine of the main series due for release in 2017 and 2019 i’m excited to see it get the same attention as the MCU. Disney has figured out a formula and they are churning out great products.

star-wars-obi-comic

The popular demand is for a Ewan McGregor lead Obi Wan Kenobi film that would take place during his time living on Tatooine. This year Marvel published various ‘Star Wars’ comics and the main comic showcased a story line where Obi Wan  was keeping an eye on Luke Skywalker and trying to keep him out of trouble from afar all while trying to adjust on Tattooine and dealing with Jaba the Hut’s gang.

What are your dream projects for the third ‘Star Wars’ anthology film?

I’ll admit. The idea of Star Wars Rebels was a tough one to accept when it was initially announced. With all of the hubbub surrounding the Extended Universe being scrapped canon wise, it was hard to imagine how a kid focused prequel linking the two trilogies would do anything but complicate the continuity. Bringing in new Jedi, Sith, and obviously, Rebels, that we never hear about during any of the major events of the films sounded like a recipe for disaster on paper. Then… Season 1 happened, and quickly changed the minds of many of its skeptics. By creating its own identity while tying loosely into the abruptly cancelled Clone Wars animated series, Rebels teased the potential to create a proper bridge between episodes three and four. In this way, the show doubles down throughout its second season, creating constantly compelling storylines that work surprisingly well both as standalone episodes, and serve as glimpses into what the future may hold for The Force and its users. That is… When the show isn’t spinning its wheels with inconsequential content.

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Review Image 3

The crew is back for season 2!

Following the defeat of the Sith Inquisitor at the end of the first season, Kanan Jarrus, the Jedi Knight who avoided Order 66, and his newly discovered apprentice, Ezra Bridger, continue to travel the galaxy as part of the Lothal Rebels, who are working towards the destruction of the Empire long before Luke took up a lightsaber. Leading the group alongside Kanan is Hera, an ace pilot who’s exposure to battle dates back to the Clone Wars. Rounding out their crew is Sabine Wren, a Mandalorian soldier with a past as a bounty hunter, (and a penchant for graffiti), Zeb Orrelios, a Lasat warrior who is out for revenge after The Empire attacked his homeworld, and their droid, Chopper. With the idea of rebellion still in its infancy, the crew constantly finds itself hiding from their enemies as they fight for territory and resources, narrowly escaping danger at every turn. But with The Empire’s strongest enforcer, Darth Vader, now on the hunt, will the return of Anakin Skywalker’s apprentice, Ashoka Tano, be enough to protect the crew from the wrath of the Dark Side? And will its pull be too much for the crew itself to resist?

From the very first episode, Rebels raises the stakes with the crew’s first encounter with Vader. The setup puts many of the season’s themes and conflicts into place, including Kanan’s paranoia over not being strong enough to protect his apprentice and crew, Ezra’s growing frustration with his mentor’s lack of faith as the Dark Side begins to tempt him, and Ashoka’s inevitable reunion with her former master. As if to ensure that this wouldn’t be a one sided conflict from the get-go, Vader inexplicably disappears after the rebels narrowly escape, sending two new Inquisitors to complete the job that he was so close to finishing himself. Along the way, the crew meets Lando, Leia, and other key figures as they travel the galaxy in search of a way to defeat the Empire, all while avoiding detection themselves.

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Review Image 2

Seeing Rex again is one of the highlights of the season.

In the episodes in between the first two and last three, the season uses its 22 episode total to better acquaint us with the crew and their backgrounds as they work towards establishing their new base. Hera’s skill as a pilot and her history with her father, the Clone Wars hero, Cham Syndulla, is given its time in the spotlight, alongside Sabine’s bounty hunter past, and  Kanan’s distrust of Clones after Order 66 when Captain Rex resurfaces. Among the side stories however, none were more compelling than late in the season, when Zeb becomes stranded alongside Agent Kallus, the Empire commander who spends most of the season trying to weed out the heroes. Easily the most compelling episode that’s not focused on the Jedi and Sith, the two enemies are forced to work together to survive the native threats that surround them, all while finding a better understanding of each other. Through their interactions, we learn that not everyone in the Empire is evil. Many think they’re doing the right thing by bringing order to the galaxy, and see their enemies as those who misunderstand their good intentions. From Kallus’ point of view in his days as a low rank officer, his squad was meant to help Zeb’s home world, but distrust and unrest from the natives led to paranoia from the ground troops, which would eventually break into the battle that would nearly wipe out the Lasat. By the end, both characters develop mutual respect for each other as people despite being pit against each other in the larger conflict, bringing a sense of humanity to the evil Empire we’ve grown accustomed to for decades. That is, in between jokes about how Stormtroopers are terrible shots, which is on full display here. In fact, outside of the Sith and Kallus, it’s hard to take any of them as a serious threat when they come off as so incompetent every time one of the team’s unlikely plans to escape their predicaments goes off without a hitch. You’ll start to wonder how they held a grip on the galaxy for as long as they did.

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Review Image 1Yup, still imposing. And we love him for it.

Make no mistake about it though, because when the Dark Side is in full force, they’re still the group that we love to hate. With some gripping build up to the final conflict of the season, old friends such as Yoda re-surface to impart some lasting knowledge on our master-less Jedi and his Padawan. After the well constructed build up finally hits its crescendo, and we finally get the face off between Ashoka and Vader, there’s so many moving parts that all fit so well together that even this long awaited battle can’t overshadow what’s going on with Kanan and Ezra. I won’t spoil too much for those who haven’t seen it, but by brining back a ghost from the past, we suddenly have ties that go back to the earliest points in the film timeline, all the way to The Force Awakens. In typical Star Wars fashion, the second story ends with the heroes in a bad spot. By the time it was over, I definitely wanted more, and I can’t wait to find out what the fallout is going to be after the events of the finale. But most of all, I’m very anxious for how all of this is going to end.

With all the excitement out of the way however, I can’t talk about the season as a whole while ignoring some poorly placed episodes in the season that serve as nothing more than time fillers, making certain points throughout the run feel like they were stretching out material to meet the season total. I get that in a weekly cartoon, especially one marketed with children in mind, they’re not going to be the ones analyzing whether or not the episode had merit. They’ll largely care about seeing the characters do some cool stuff to hold them over until the following week. But even among the pointless episode here and there, the episode before the two part finale is the most unfortunate of all. After making an announcement that was teased to have everlasting effects on the crew, Kanan and Ezra find themselves playing Starship Troopers near their newly founded base with the rest of their team, in a complete throwaway that undercuts the gravity of the first and last two minutes of the episode. Thankfully, the following episodes were enough to pull me back in, but the change in tone was jarring to say the least.

Will Ezra be tempted by the Dark Side?

Now if you’ve watched the season as it aired and were looking to get your money’s worth with extra content, you’re going to find yourself disappointed on that front. Each disc in the 3-disc set has its own set of Rebels Recon shorts, where we learn about what went on to develop each episode. These mini documentaries however, have been on StarWars.com since each episode aired, so you can head over to the site and watch them there, rather than needing this set. The third disc houses two bonus shorts, one going over the history between Ashoka and Anakin, while the other talks about easter eggs that tie the season to the rest of the Star Wars continuity. While interesting, each one clocks in at less than five minutes, making the package feel bare bones outside of the actual episodes.

Star Wars Rebels Season 2 Review Image 5

Lightsaber duels will never stop being great.

So if you’re someone who wants a satisfying continuation of the unfinished Clone Wars saga, who never watched Rebels and want some fantastic storytelling in that galaxy far, far away, or who can’t wait to re-live the events of the second season, do yourself a favor and pick up Season 2. The special features might be sparce, and the season could have been better without a few episodes, but overall, these episodes succeed in producing original stories that manage to be compelling all on their own, while enriching the established film universe. Most of all, I can’t wait for more! So in that sense, mission accomplished.

The original Disney Magical World was an enjoyable, dare I say, magical game. It had the town (or in this case, café) management of the Animal Crossing series but also added in an RPG storyline, filled with NPCs, missions, and crafting equipment. It was not ground-breaking by any means but I found it to be wonderful, light-hearted fun.

Nintendo is releasing the sequel, Disney Magical World 2, and has launched a teaser site for the game. From the looks of things, old favorites from the original will be returning, such as The Hundred Acre Wood and Cinderella’s Ball (I actually hated that dancing minigame but I hear I am in the minority). New locations include Frozen‘s Arendelle, Hawaii a la Lilo and Stitch, and The Little Mermaid‘s Atlantica. “Magical Dreams,” which are special events inspired by the parades found at Disney Parks, are another new feature for Disney Magical World 2.

You can check out the teaser site here (it has a pretty spiffy trailer in it, too). Disney Magical World 2 is scheduled to launch in North America on October 14.

The first TV spots for Rogue One has just been released… and it show no new footage, so that’s dissapointing.

I’m so excited for this ‘filler’ movie that I even made the wailing alarm my notification sound for my phone (and it’s been like that ever since the first trailer was released).

The two parts that always gets me hyped are Donnie Yen with the staff, and the AT-AT aiming at the screen. I can’t wait!

Star Wars has always had its place in Disney history, with the always popular Star Tours ride, Jedi Training Academy and the now defunct Star Wars Weekend at Disney’s Hollywood Studios (the latter adding somewhat of a convention feel to the parks). The Disney characters would come out to Star Wars costumes, Star Wars themed parades, actors from the films would be present on certain weekends for picturess and autographs, they would even host special themed stage shows. Like the always popular Hyperspace Hoopla and themed fireworks. Disney really went all out during those weekends.

With the acquisition of the Star Wars property it was just a matter of time before Disney would ramp it up and make it a permanent mainstay at the parks. At last years D23 that is exactly what happened, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced Star Wars Land for both Disney World and Disneyland. Then, with the announcement of the conclusion of Star Wars Weekends and of the also popular holiday “The Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights”, we were now one step closer to having Star Wars Land.

I recently took my annual family trip out to Walt Disney World at the same time that the Star Wars Celebration was going on across the pond in Europe. Between all of the theme park stuff and all of the news announcements, I wasn’t expecting a Star Wars overload while on vacation.

First off, I had never been to any of the Star Wars weekends, and didn’t know what to expect of the new offerings that the parks started this Summer. With half of Hollywood Studios closed off with construction walls, Disney added the Star Wars Launch Bay which actually made its debut before the release of The Force Awakens and the most recently added Captain Phasma Storm Trooper March, Star Wars: A Galaxy Far Far Away, and Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular.

Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple

This kid participation show recently was revamped by receiving a Star Wars: Rebels overlay. Kids now receive training with characters that resembles our rebel heroes and encounter the Seventh Sister Inquisitor and Darth Vader. At the end of the trials they face off on a third villain which I believe varies day to day, I have seen videos of Darth Maul, but witnessed it being Kylo Ren. It’s a cool show for the little ones especially if they get to brag about facing off big Star War Villains.

Star Tours – The Adventure Continues

This ride had huge fan fare and a resurgence in popularity when it received a upgrade back in 2011. With the inclusion of multiples scenes, there are now 96 scene combinations to this ride resulting in a myriad of different ride experiences. The ride now includes 2 new Force Awakens scenes. I was lucky enough to receive both new scenes in my ride combination. First, after the speedster warps, they now land in Jakku where you’re now following the Millennium Falcon while being chased by TIE Fighters, and we then receive an incoming message from Finn. Now this scenes is the best of them all for the simple fact that your are now playing out the chase scene from the movie. I was completely overjoyed feeling like I was in the actual Jakku scene from the movie. After that, the speedster warps again and we receive a special transmission from BB-8 regarding a special mission. I always enjoyed this ride but for you continuity nerds like me, you have to heavily forgive it. There are scenes/characters from the prequels and original trilogy that also used. So the following scene of being warped to the Death Star and fighting Bobba Fett was a bit jarring. Still Fun!

Captain Phasma’s First Order Stormtrooper March

This march actually has a bit of prologue to it. Before each march starts, two Stormtroopers walk from the Launch Bay to the center stage clearing out the path and interacting with park guests. It was really cool to witness, they stopped my wife and harassed her for identification while the other trooper was trying to disperse the huge crowd following them.

The march takes place from the Launch Bay area to the center stage. Once at the stage Captain Phasma orders the trooper to perform some tasks to showcase the might of the First Order. Once I finished watching this I was impressed by the character and texted Jonathan how the park show redeemed her as a character. This show is is very short, and not much besides that.

20160717_150606_HDR

Star Wars: A Galaxy Far Far Away

This is another live action show that features various characters from all seven films. The stage show starts off with a highlight reel of the seven movies that kind of focuses on the incoming character. We get to see C-3PO, R2D2, Chewbacca, Darth Maul, Darth Vader, Bobba Fett, First Order Troopers along with Captain Phasma, Kylo Ren and BB-8. Depending on the character, certain pyrotechnics would go off to add to the effect of presence on stage.

Star Wars Launch Bay

This area, which was formally Animation Courtyard would be a celebration of Disney animation showcasing behind the scenes looks at the process and a display of items used in the current  movie. They would also host various popular character meet and greets. Depending on the newest Disney movie out, the area would get a quick re-theme to match the current hit, like for my prior trip it was themed for Wreck-It Ralph. The main stay was always Sorcerer Mickey and Mr. Incredible with Frozone.

Now the area was completely reworked for the sole purpose of Star Wars. When you first enter the area you can opt to watch a 10 minute video clip that works as an update of what going on with the Star Wars Cinematic Universe. After that you ushered into a hall with a bunch of props from the Star Wars Universe. I was happy to see Star Wars Rebels get some love with items replicated into the real world for display. after you work you way around a pod racer you find two separate lines for Kylo Ren and Chewbacca with more props on display to keep you busy while on line. Meeting them was a blast. For Kylo Ren you’re instructed to stand at attention while Kylo Measures you up.

Star Wars launch bay - kylo ren

One of the big surprises for me was when we were about to walk out and I stumbled upon a makeshift Cantina with two Jawas walking around dancing and taking pictures. This automatically triggered my memory of this area and I remembered that you can actually trade with them. So after some back and forth bantering and pictures I asked to make a trade, they pulled out a droid leg filled with trinkets. I lost it, they have thought of everything. I traded my sunglasses for a bar of soap and a jewel. they were ecstatic and parading the sunglasses around. I took a celebratory drink of blue milk and went on my merry way.

It wouldn’t be Disney if you didn’t exit through a gift shop. If you are rich and wanted something Star Wars related from this trip, this was the place to get it. I saw things here for sale that I didn’t expect from full blown costumes to the Medals awarded at the end of Episode IV. I’m poor enough, so we opted to each get a Star Wars name tag, which caused a great debate of what our ranks would be.

20160728_095004

Star Wars: A Galactic Spectacular

This was by far one of the most impressive fireworks display I have seen at Disney World. With a combination of lasers, projections and fireworks. The show is displayed in three “acts”. The first act covers the phenomena that is Star Wars and the magic that brought it to life.

The second act is about the movies and really brings you into the fold. This show is not for the casuals, different scenes are displayed from all seven films so it can be hard to follow. The greatest part of the section was when action is being portrayed on the projection. There was a scene with AT-AT walkers shooting towards the audience and the red lasers shoot across triggering pyrotechnics behind us. The other scene that stood out to me was the Emperor using force lightning and the projections just spreading across the area was so cool. It was just simply amazing.

The Third acts brings it back to being about the movies as whole and setting up the big finale. Different scenes are played out from each movie which are now creating a giant poster of every film until the finale of the iconic pose of Luke Skywalker’s hands clasped together on a lightsaber over the Chinese Theater sending up a giant beam of light into the air as to announce to the world that Star Wars has arrived at the Disney parks.

star-wars-galactic-spectacular-00

Just some notes I made from my observations of all the new stuff:

– They really focus on Kylo Ren’s temper tantrum. It gets displayed twice on two separate stage shows.

– Some of the continuity issues bother me, especially on Star Tours. But beggars can’t be choosers.

– The amount of silly merchandise is getting staggering. I saw a $15 popcorn bucket of a tie fighter that could barely hold any popcorn to begin with and the actual thing was massive. Also the Han Solo frozen in carbonite popcorn holder is just wrong.

– All the characters were great in keeping with my expectations of how they would act in the real world, with the exception of Chewbacca who seemed a bit tired.

I’m a sucker for nostalgia and I will miss all the old offerings from Hollywood Studios, but I cant wait for Toy Story Land and Star Wars to open. I fell completely in love with the the new Star Wars area and was just in awe of what could be coming once the Star Wars Land is completed. I’m sure not everything has been revealed to us of what’s to come. What we know so far is that there will be a full functioning Cantina, A Millennium Falcon Ride, and a ride centered around a battle between The First Order and and the Rebels.

On this trip I had the pleasure of visiting Hogwarts and Diagon Alley over at Universal Studios and was completely blown away to the attention to detail that i spent over 2 hours at each area soaking it all up. So if Star Wars Land is to serve as an answer to that, I can only imagine Disney is going to pull all the stops to make this the greatest add-on in theme park history.

Elsa, the beloved Snow Queen of Disney’s blockbuster film Frozen, will soon get a figma in her likeness thanks to Good Smile Company and Max Factory. This isn’t the first piece of merchandise from the movie to be crafted by this group; both Anna and Elsa were sold as Nendoroids in the past. However, I think can safely say this figma is the most impressive of the Frozen figures. Without further ado, let’s take a look at her.

figma Elsa - Let it go

Given that figma allow you to switch up facial expressions (and pose the figure as well), there is of course a singing face included. I can practically hear “Let It Go” in my head.

Before we move on, take a moment to appreciate the details in this figure. The shimmering bodice and cape are especially impressive. I also dig the icy high heels.

figma Elsa - snow magic

Here we see Elsa’s second face, a sidelong glance. She comes with two ice magic effect parts. Note, her legs are visible through the slit in her dress.

In the next 3 years Pixar will release 4 new movies, but only 1 of them will be an original film, Coco, slated for release on November 22nd, 2017. But even before that we’ll be getting Cars 3 on June 16th, 2017. After that, Toy Story 4 will release on June 15th 2018, and then The Incredibles 2 will follow on June 21st, 2019. While Coco and The Incredibles 2 seem like exciting ventures, Cars 3 and especially Toy Story 4 seem to wear on peoples patience with the company. It’s also sparked mass debate about whether Pixar should be doing so many sequels when the quality of them has been pretty split among them.

Fear not though! In a recent interview with  Entertainment Weekly, Pixar president Jim Morris has stated that the company will be heavily focusing on original content after Toy Story and Incredibles as they’d rather start creating new stories rather than build upon their current franchises. Are you excited for Pixars shift back to original content, or are there still some sequels you want to see from them? Tell us in the comments below!
