A video was circulating of a man cosplaying as Powerline at Wondercon last week. I shared it on my Facebook wall which lead to a friend sending me the following video.

This reminded me of another video I saw of someone re-enacting the opening scene from A Goofy Movie. It made me realize that every time I met someone who liked Goofy Movie we’d both get excited and geek out that we both knew it existed.

Here’s the weird thing about it though… almost everyone I know has seen and loved this movie. I’ve noticed the same situation come up with the movie Heavyweights (which is also great). It seems that every person between the ages of 22 and 35 saw A Goofy Movie and thought that they were the only person to see it. As if we all collectively discovered a secret Disney film.

Maybe because we were ashamed to admit how much we loved Disney movies back then. Which is dumb of us because I don’t care who you are, part of you will always love Disney movies.

This past week I’ve been listening to Disney music in my car. It’s been a mixed bag of emotions. One of the weirder parts about being an overly sensitive and emotional person with anxiety and depression is your ability to smile, laugh and cry simultaneously.

On one hand Disney makes me smile. It makes me think of my vacations to DisneyWorld. The most recent one was in this past October with my family. It was one of the best vacations I ever had. I probably was to proud to say that to anyone in my family, but it really was. Just spending time with the people I loved the most, surrounded in a place filled with so much joy … it’s all the things vacations are made to be.

Disney trips are difficult. They’re long and more work than relaxing. But when you’re standing next to the greatest people in the world watching those fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle it’s impossible to not love the place, even for just a second.

The time prior to that was my senior class trip. It was just a few weeks before graduation and very few of my friends attended the trip. I ended up making friendships with classmates I never spoke to. They are now among my closest friends in the world. Another example of the power of Disney.

This is footage from my class memory tape edited by me

So why the sadness?

Because previous to these two trips… my Aunt Lisa had been with us on every trip to Disney. She loved Disney. When I was in college my aunt was diagnosed with cancer. She was given a year and she made it six. None of us said it on our family trip this October, but she was missed.

It’s not easy continuing to live life when someone who was a part of it is no longer in it. There is forever a part of you missing when that person is gone. This is why I find myself crying my way through singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in my car on a Thursday. I probably watched Mary Poppins with my aunt more than any other movie.

It’s sad and it’s unfair. It’s always awful when someone is taken from us too soon. I was in 10th grade when my grandfather died. At the time, he was my best friend. How is that fair? How is it fair to expect a 16 year old kid to have to deal with not just his grandfather dying… but his best friend? It’s not fair that my grandmother had to bury her daughter. It’s not fair that my dad had to say goodbye to his only sibling. It’s not fair… but to quote one of the greatest movies ever made… ‘Life’s not fair princess, anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something’.

When someone is ripped from your life it leaves a painful void and you can fill that void with one of two things. You can fill it with anger and sadness and bitterness. You can curse this world for being so cruel and so unfair. Or…

Or, you can live life harder than ever to make up for the life they can’t live.

That’s the option I prefer. So I went to Disney with my family. I rode the Haunted Mansion for her. I ate at Downtown Disney and saved her a seat in my mind. I walked around Animal Kingdom with her in my heart. When I screamed on Tower of Terror I screamed extra loud for her. When I’m singing along to Beauty and the Beast in my car, I’m singing it for her.

My family is already planning another trip to Disney. I can’t wait. I can’t wait to walk through Magic Kingdom’s gates, hear that music and feel her smiling with us. My Grandfather too and countless others that I carry in my heart every single day.

It’s always hard to lose a beloved actor, especially one that could have had at least another 20+ years to give.

Yesterday morning, Actor Bill Paxton died at the age of 61 due to complications from heart surgery. Paxton suffered a fatal stroke Post-op and sadly passed. Paxton was a beloved actor appearing in films such as Predator 2, the original Terminator, and of course Aliens where he delivered one of the films most iconic lines: “Game over man! Game over!” We hear at Geekscape are saddened by the passing and wish his family only the best. It may be game over for him, but his legacy will live on.

Ever since the death of Satoru Iwata 2 years ago, the tribute and appreciation for a founder/CEO of a company dying hasn’t been that big, but it just got a bit bigger again.

Masaya Nakamura, the founder of Namco and most often credited as the creator of Pac-Man (right beside Toru Iwatani) has sadly died at the age of 91. No cause of death has really been confirmed, so it’s safe to assume that he just died of old age. Nevertheless, we’ll never forget all that you’ve done for this industry Mr. Nakamura. Hopefully Namco and Pac-Man continue to produce many more great games in the future.

Briefly: It’s another sad, sad day in Hollywood, as the world reacts to the death of another young star.

Anton Yelchin, who portrayed Chekov in Star TrekStar Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond, as well the titular character in 2007’s criminally underrated Charlie Bartlett was found dead near his home early this morning.

According to TMZ, who was first to report the news, the actor was found pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate. They note that “the engine was running when his body was discovered, and the car was in neutral. The driveway was on a fairly steep incline. It’s unclear why he got out of the car.”

As a huge fan of Anton throughout his career, this news came as quite a shock. Our thoughts go out to Anton’s family and friends.

Wow, 2016 has been quite the upsetting year, hasn’t it?

Yelchin

This year is not starting off that well.

This morning the actor most known for his seminal role as Grizzly Adams, Dan Haggerty, has passed away this morning after a short battle with an aggressive form of cancer in his spine.

His manager, Terry Bomar, is quoted as saying:

He had cancer and had been fighting… and he had a great Thanksgiving and a great Christmas, and he died with his kids around him and people who love him. He had fought a long hard battle with cancer of the spine that was discovered in August of this year. He would light up any room he entered. He loved life, loved his family, loved his friends and fans. The last words I heard him say were ‘I love you’.

Haggerty is most known for his role as Grizzly Adams in the 1977 television series, and subsequent movies, of the same name. Most recently though he had picked up more roles, with two projects currently in post production.

Haggerty is survived by his children.

Briefly: It’s been a pretty rough start to 2016, hasn’t it?

era-defining musician Davie Bowie passed away just four days ago after a 1.5 year bout with the disease, and today it took another legendary victim: 69 year old Alan Rickman.

Rickman will be remembered not only as the incredible screen and stage actor that he was, but also as some of the most menacing characters that Hollywood has ever seen. Whenever I hear the name Rickman, it’s absolutely impossible to think or picture anyone else but Hans Gruber, the evil mastermind behind the attack on the Nakatomi Plaza in the original Die Hard.

Of course, his huge list of credits go far beyond the films that I’m familiar with, but for younger generations (and likely many adults too), Rickman was the very best Severus Snape that anyone could have imagined.

It’s certainly been a sombre week for pop culture fans everywhere. Mr. Rickman, you will be missed.

TheGuardian has a fantastic write-up profiling the celebrated actor’s career. I’d implore you to give it a read.

Rickman

Nintendo of Japan has released a statement with the unfortunate news that Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo and CEO of Nintendo of America, has passed away due to complications from a bile duct growth. He was 55.

As the person who guided Nintendo through their most recent string of releases, Iwata is best known as the person who led the charge in releasing the Nintendo DS and Wii families of systems, as well as revolutionizing the way company news was delivered through the company’s much praised Nintendo Direct presentations.

We will update the story as it develops.

There are two ways to feel about the passing of Dusty “The American Dream” Rhodes. One way to feel about it is, well, sad. Grieving the loss of one of the greatest men to ever enter the squared circle. The other feeling is confused; “Who is Dusty Rhodes?” Until three years ago, I’d have been that second feeling.

As a child I was a WWE kid. I was a Hulkamaniac, I loved Bret Hart, I had my Ultimate Warrior and Rowdy Piper toys. Then one day I just stopped liking wrestling. I genuinely don’t remember what made me walk away, but I did.

I missed the entire Attitude era. My friends were wrestling fans so I was aware of the characters through No Mercy on the Nintendo 64 and Saturday morning wrestling on a trampoline. It was Dusty Rhodes that got me back into wrestling… or more so, an impression of Dusty Rhodes.

images

Being from Philly I’ve been a fan of Kidd Chris from the second he hit the Philadelphia airwaves. Over the years he bounced from city to city and I’ve followed him every step of the way. It was in his newest (and current home) WEBN that his new co-host Meat began impersonating Dusty Rhodes. If you haven’t heard the impression, it’s hilarious, spot-on, but also an impression that can only exist from a passionate fan playing an homage (never has it seemed to be a mockery of The American Dream).

I loved the impression so much that I began to research Dusty and watching his promos and his matches. I realized the appeal almost immediately. Hulkamania ran wild for the little Hulkamaniacs, Ric Flair would style and profile his high class lifestyle but Dusty was the every-man. The Son of Plumber.

dusty-rhodes.jpg

That’s what made Dusty the jive-talker with a lisp a hero to countless wrestling fans. He existed beyond his gimmicks. It didn’t matter if he was wearing polka-dots or dancing around the ring, when he opened his mouth you listened. Every word was important, uplifting and powerful. I’m sure every posting about Dusty Rhodes has ended with this Hard Times promo, but there’s a reason for it. It is the best promo in wrestling history, bar none.

Hard Times is the type of speech every writer dreams of writing and every speaker dreams of speaking. In the promo Dusty begins thanking people showing his humbleness and genuine love of his fans. Immediately he begins cutting into Ric Flair and begins speaking to people’s fears and struggles. The message is clear. Ric Flair doesn’t understand your struggles… but Dusty does. He understands that sometimes you’ll get a watch, a kick in the butt, and your job given to a computer.

Dusty didn’t have the body of a wrestler, he wasn’t an attractive man. He had a bad lisp and was frequently forced to wear outrageous outfits. But he could talk. No one has and no one ever will speak with more authority, passion and sincerity like The American Dream Dusty Rhodes. He will be missed.

Earlier this week we talked about a recent hospital visit the legendary actor had mad for chest pains. Well today we’ve gotten the worst bit of follow up news.

Leanard Nimoy has passed away at age 83 at his home. His wife had confirmed this morning that the cause was “end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.”

I’m at a severe loss for words.

Our hearts and prayers go out to his wife and family.

Leonard, you will always live long and prosper in all our thoughts.

In a statement on their website, Rooster Teeth has confirmed that Monty Oum, the animator behind the popular Hailoid and Dead Fantasy fan films, in addition to creating the American made anime, RWBY, has passed away due to complications from an allergic reaction during minor surgery.

Oum first caught the attention of gamers when his Halo and Metroid crossover film, Haloid, went viral. From there, the artist got picked up as an animator for Midway, working on titles such as Afro Samurai, before eventually becoming an animator at Rooster Teeth, namely as a contributor to their popular Red vs. Blue series. After becoming known for his much acclaimed fan works, Oum finally split off into original properties, creating RWBY as part of the RT network, developing a cult following amongst the anime fandom.

His sudden death is one that’s felt throughout the gaming world, showing how much of a mark one can make with such little time with only a little imagination, some big ideas and a wealth of ambition. While I’ll always remember him as the one who made Dead Or Alive look as amazing as I always knew it was based on its deceptively deep lore, the mark he’s left us between his multiple projects will have a lasting effect, making us wonder how many amazing projects could have been born if he was affording another 32 years.

Oum is survived by his wife, Sheena. His family is accepting donations at their GoFundMe page to help cover outstanding medical bills. Outside of donating, Rooster Teeth said it best when writing,

“In lieu of flowers or gifts, we ask that you simply do something creative. Use your imagination to make the world a better place in any way that you can. If you know Monty like we do, then you know he would certainly be doing that if he were able to.”

For those dedicated Moonies who’ve patiently waited for the second half of the first season, the months of agonizing are almost over! Viz Media has announced that the remainder of the Dark Kingdom story arc will release on Febrary 10th, both as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack, and as a standard DVD set!

Covering episodes 24-46, Sailor Moon, Mercury and Mars continue their fight against the Dark Kingdom. In pursuit of the seven Rainbow Crystals, their remaining allies in Sailor Jupiter and Sailor Venus, and the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, the conclusion of the groundbreaking first season will be told for the first time with an uncut English dub.

Rounding out the Blu-ray package is a holofoil slipcover with specialty printing, special features which include highlights from Sailor Moon Day convention events from last summer, a ‘Moonlight Memories Part 1’ featurette, the full Anime Expo Sailor Moon panel and cast reveal, interviews with the cosplay team, digital art galleries and clean opening and endings, putting that HDTV to good use in 1080P! The DVD set will include special packaging, the convention highlights and the clean opening and ending as well, but since the Blu-ray set has so much more in addition to the inclusion of the DVD’s, there’s little reason not to go the HD route.

With season 1 wrapping up, we’re that much closer to finally seeing the full series here in the West. Are you planning on picking up this set? Let us know, and keep an eye out for a full review of the redubbed season 1 in the coming weeks!

Robin Williams was found dead on Monday in his home in Marin, the Marin Sheriff’s Office confirms.  Authorities say the apparent cause of death was suicide.

Robin Williams was found dead on Monday, August 11th. He was 63.
Robin Williams was found dead on Monday, August 11th. He was 63.

Celebrities and fans alike have turned to Twitter to mourn the lose of the award winning actor, including Steve Martin, who said, “I could not be more stunned by the loss of Robin Williams, mensch, great talent, acting partner, genuine soul.”

William’s publicist, Mara Buxbaum, released a statement saying that Williams had been “battling severe depression of late.” She went on to say, “This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this difficult time.”

Williams rose to fame in his role as Mork in Mork & Mindy and went on to become a lauded and critically acclaimed actor and comedian for his portrayals in such movies as Good Will Hunting, What Dreams May Come, Dead Poets Society and others . His most recent show, “The Crazy Ones,” was cancelled after one season on CBS.

Susan Schneider, Williams’ wife, released the following statement to the New York Times’ Dave Itzkoff:

“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one if its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

The latest episode of  Sailor Moon Crystal serves as the real testing point between whether  or not fans of the original anime will take to this new adaptation. More so than any of the previous acts, the reveal of Sailor Mars differs greatly from the manga compared to how the 90’s series introduced the character, which means Crystal has inevitably followed suit. But with the differences in the way the story is told, this also leads to the Sailor Senshi’s greatest battle yet, as they come face to face with Jaedite, one if the Four Kings of the Dark Kingdom, which results in an exciting, if not flawed, half hour of television.

The episode opens with a warning from Queen Beryl, the Dark Kingdom’s apparent leader. Jaedite’s previous failures has her enraged, and puts the pressure on her subordinate to find both the legendary Silver Crystal and the mysterious princess, that she correctly speculates her enemies are also in pursuit of. So naturally, this leads to Jaedite saying “screw it”, with the elaborate plans and just decides to start kidnapping people en mass in hopes that someone in his giant people pile ends up being the person he’s looking for. Since dozens of people going missing all at once on a daily basis isn’t a typical occurrence in Japan, (though probably still not the weirdest), the mysterious vanishing bus that the victims were last seen on becomes the talk of the town. This leads to blame Rei, a mysterious shrine maiden with hidden powers, since one of the victims in particular was visiting her temple before boarding the bus. As you would expect, the incidents also draw the attention of Luna, Ami and Usagi, who begin their own investigation into the disappearances.

Now, while the plot shares some similarities with the way that the original, (the disappearing bus, Rei being suspected to be involved, her thinking Usagi was an evil spirit), the majority of the content derives greatly from that version, which may throw some nostalgic viewers off. Rei isn’t as bossy or antagonistic towards Usagi as before, and instead comes off as calm, compassionate and even tragic in her demeanor. Not to say that this more subdued take on the character doesn’t kick all kinds of ass, but we’ll come back to that in a bit.

But possibly overshadowing Rei’s debut was this week’s interaction between Mamoru and Usagi, which was all kinds of adorable. Finally introducing himself to her after three episodes of crazy random happenstances, their interactions are also far less antagonistic, leaning more towards a mutual attraction that neither can explain. But even more importantly, when Sailor Moon chases the demon bus into the Dark Kingdom, Tuxedo Mask not only sees her use her transformation pen, but catches Luna. Now that he’s heard the cat talk twice and saw her transform, he just has to know who she is. It will be interesting to see where their dynamic goes from here.

Once the episode shifts into the Dark Kingdom, that’s really when it becomes Mars’ time to shine. Due to Jaedite getting directly involved with the scheme of the episode, there was always a feeling that the episode was leading to a big showdown between him and the Senshi, and it delivered pretty well. The highlight of the entire fight was when Jaedite tried to freeze Rei with his ice beams after subduing Sailor Moon and Mercury, only for her to dispel his attack with her power, but this was BEFORE she became Sailor Mars. Talk about bad ass!

Once she does transform, her real power shines through. The battle doesn’t last much longer, leading to Jadeite being engulfed by her flames, where he meets his ultimate end… Or does he? In the manga, he’s burnt to ashes, leaving the enraged Nephrite, (who made his official debut in this episode alongside Zoicite), to pick up where his failed companion left off. But here, Jadeite obviously teleported out before he could be killed. What implications does this have for the story going forward? Will Nephrite still take over in the next act? And how will Queen Beryl react to this latest failure now that her subordinate isn’t a pile of ash? It’s deviations like this that will keep everyone on their toes, making me even more excited for Act IV.

And yet, while Sailor Mars shined through, Rei’s characterization came off as the weakest part of the episode, especially compared to previous acts. Like I mentioned in my review of Act II, the writers commendably found a way to drive the main story forward while squeezing in Ami’s background, motivations and tragedy as she was isolated from her peers. With Rei, the only things we learned about her are that she goes to a different school, she lives in a shrine and her powers are strong enough to render an attack from a powerful otherworldly general useless, but not strong enough to track missing children.

Oh, and did we mention that she’s beautiful? We should, since I think it was mentioned about seven times throughout the episode by three different characters. So much so, that Usagi deemed it necessary to stare at her on the bus, get off at her stop, and follow her home. Where I’m from, that would be a restraining order in the making. And while I appreciate the nod to Jadeite and Sailor Mars’ potential connection, I’m pretty sure contemplating your attraction to someone and touching their face while the person is unconscious is a big no no.

But the most ironic part is that Rei seems to be the victim of the majority of animation errors in this episode. For someone who’s so beautiful, she has the habit of making some really awkward faces.

With so many errors, they’re impossible to ignore. It’s unfortunate that they had to affect my favorite Senshi But hey, am I impartial, or what?

In the end, Act III creates plenty of anticipation for the following episode, namely with how the relationship between Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask will proceed now that he essentially knows who she is, and what will happen with Jadeite, since the typical story has him dying at the hands of Mars’ attack. With that said, while enjoyable, Act III ends up being the weakest episode yet. If the series can get over this misstep and get back to the excellent characterization of its cast from the first two episodes while cutting back on the animation errors, we’ll be sure to be treated to an unpredictable adventure, even for longtime manga purists.

Final Score- 3.5/5

Briefly: Just last week it was revealed that Paul Walker’s brothers Caleb and Cody would help to finish Walker’s iconic role in the seventh Fast & Furious film, and today costar Vin Diesel released the first photo of the brothers on set.

Here’s what Diesel had to say about the opportunity:

When I heard the news, I left the production, grabbed a plane and took my family and Michelle back to LA… drove directly to his parent’s house…

His Father said, Paul loved you Vin… I awkwardly and nervously said, aw come on… then he said… you don’t have to get along every second to love each other… so true.

P.s. After spending time with his biological brothers, I must say to the parents, you raised some great kids.

And here’s Vin with the brothers. What would you like to see happen to Walker’s character in the film? Fast & Furious 7 hits theatres on April 10th, 2015.

WalkerBros

Briefly: Ever since Paul Walker’s tragic death last November, fans have wondered just how The Fast and the Furious series would continue.

Today, the film’s official Facebook page revealed that most of Paul’s scenes in the film had already been completed, and that Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, would be stepping in to film the remaining scenes.

Here’s the full announcement:

The FAST & FURIOUS saga is about family. The characters are connected by the bond of family, and it is how all of us who have worked together for more than thirteen years feel about each other. It certainly defines how we feel about our fans.

Our family experienced an unthinkable shock in November. We had to take time to grieve Paul, the brother we love and lost, and to figure out if we should move on with our film.

We came together and all felt the only choice was to continue. We believe our fans want that, and we believe Paul would want that too. Paul had already shot his dramatic scenes and most of his action for FAST & FURIOUS 7, and it’s among the strongest work of his career.

We have resumed shooting and now welcome Paul’s brothers, Caleb and Cody, into our FAST family. Caleb and Cody are helping us complete some remaining action for their brother and fill in small gaps left in production. Having them on set has made us all feel that Paul is with us too.

We are just under a year away from the release of FAST & FURIOUS 7, and this film is the most important we’ve ever done together. It will allow the character of Brian O’Conner to live on and let us celebrate Paul in his most defining role.

We wanted to take a moment to speak to our fans directly and thank you for the love and support you always show us as we resume our work.

It must be tough to be on that set right now. What do you think of the news? In any case, Fast & Furious 7 hits theatres on April 10th, 2015.

Briefly: The tragic death of Paul Walker last week continues to ripple throughout the world. Friends, family, and fans everywhere continue to mourn for the lost star, many only learning now of Walker’s many generous endeavours.

Universal announced today that Fast and Furious 7 has been put on an indefinite hold as the company decides what to do with the franchise (and as the cast and crew come to terms with the situation). The studio has also launched an emotional tribute video on the official Fast and Furious YouTube channel, which has garnered over 400,000 views in just a few hours.

Take a look at the video below, and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

Briefly: After Paul Walker’s tragic death just a few days ago, many wondered what the future of the Fast and Furious series would hold, especially the already in production Fast and Furious 7.

Well, the film has been put on an indefinite hold while Universal figures out what to do with it. On Dec. 2nd, the studio notified both cast and crew members of the halt in production.

Walker was set to reprise his role as Brian O’Connor in the film, much of which had already been filmed.

The film was originally set to release on July 11th, but it’s probably safe to say it won’t be making that date now. We’ll keep you updated on the situation, and be sure to let you know when a new release date is set.

Our thoughts go out to Paul’s family and friends.

Avengers Vs. X-Men is nearing the epic-conclusion with issue #11 hitting stands in three weeks and the finale shortly after. We all knew that this story would not be ending happy for everybody. At the end of the storyline one major character WILL die as seen by the cover of AvX: Consequences.

Based on the numerous interviews with the creative teams behind these books you can detect that this incident will have a greater effect on the X-Men than the Avengers. This most likely implies that the character that will die will indeed be a mutant. So, let’s discuss the most likely candidates to go out at the end of AvX.

Scott Summers

This seems to be the one on the top of everyone’s list. Personally, I have to disagree with him though. It’s too obvious and I can’t see Marvel building up the character over the past years just to lead to this. And, even though Marvel is denying it, that Marvel NOW! teaser image features a character that sure does look alot like Mr. Summers.

Emma Frost

Based on the cover to number 11 andseeing her and Cyclops going at it she is definitely on the list. And my personal pick to die. She’s one character I really can’t stand and hope is the one that Marvel takes out. One can only hope right?

Hope Summers

The “mutant messiah” is a definite candidate for being the one that goes out here. This battle began over her and most likely will end with her. I think she will make the ultimate sacrifice and that is how she is going to be the one who will “save the mutant race”. Phoenixes tend to flame out, particularly if there’s some noble world-saving to be done in the process, so it stands to reason that Hope would follow in Jean’s footsteps.

Charles Xavier

The top candidate is definitely Xavier. With the plot synopsis for X-Men: Legacy containing the line “in a post-Avengers vs. X-Men world that may – or may not – be without Xavier himself” it is highly possible that Xavier could sacrifice himself to save the mutant race or possibly even Scott from The Phoenix Force. In New Avengers #29, he stated “I’m prepared to stop Scott, no matter what the cost.” That one doesn’t sound too good for ol’ Charles.

So, these here are just my thoughts but there is quite a bit of evidence indicating that Xavier may die at the end of Avengers Vs. X-Men. So, who do you think is going to die? Sound off in the box below!
