Don’t forget to have a great night!

A video was circulating of a man cosplaying as Powerline at Wondercon last week. I shared it on my Facebook wall which lead to a friend sending me the following video.

This reminded me of another video I saw of someone re-enacting the opening scene from A Goofy Movie. It made me realize that every time I met someone who liked Goofy Movie we’d both get excited and geek out that we both knew it existed.

Here’s the weird thing about it though… almost everyone I know has seen and loved this movie. I’ve noticed the same situation come up with the movie Heavyweights (which is also great). It seems that every person between the ages of 22 and 35 saw A Goofy Movie and thought that they were the only person to see it. As if we all collectively discovered a secret Disney film.

Maybe because we were ashamed to admit how much we loved Disney movies back then. Which is dumb of us because I don’t care who you are, part of you will always love Disney movies.

This past week I’ve been listening to Disney music in my car. It’s been a mixed bag of emotions. One of the weirder parts about being an overly sensitive and emotional person with anxiety and depression is your ability to smile, laugh and cry simultaneously.

On one hand Disney makes me smile. It makes me think of my vacations to DisneyWorld. The most recent one was in this past October with my family. It was one of the best vacations I ever had. I probably was to proud to say that to anyone in my family, but it really was. Just spending time with the people I loved the most, surrounded in a place filled with so much joy … it’s all the things vacations are made to be.

Disney trips are difficult. They’re long and more work than relaxing. But when you’re standing next to the greatest people in the world watching those fireworks over Cinderella’s Castle it’s impossible to not love the place, even for just a second.

The time prior to that was my senior class trip. It was just a few weeks before graduation and very few of my friends attended the trip. I ended up making friendships with classmates I never spoke to. They are now among my closest friends in the world. Another example of the power of Disney.

This is footage from my class memory tape edited by me

So why the sadness?

Because previous to these two trips… my Aunt Lisa had been with us on every trip to Disney. She loved Disney. When I was in college my aunt was diagnosed with cancer. She was given a year and she made it six. None of us said it on our family trip this October, but she was missed.

It’s not easy continuing to live life when someone who was a part of it is no longer in it. There is forever a part of you missing when that person is gone. This is why I find myself crying my way through singing Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious in my car on a Thursday. I probably watched Mary Poppins with my aunt more than any other movie.

It’s sad and it’s unfair. It’s always awful when someone is taken from us too soon. I was in 10th grade when my grandfather died. At the time, he was my best friend. How is that fair? How is it fair to expect a 16 year old kid to have to deal with not just his grandfather dying… but his best friend? It’s not fair that my grandmother had to bury her daughter. It’s not fair that my dad had to say goodbye to his only sibling. It’s not fair… but to quote one of the greatest movies ever made… ‘Life’s not fair princess, anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something’.

When someone is ripped from your life it leaves a painful void and you can fill that void with one of two things. You can fill it with anger and sadness and bitterness. You can curse this world for being so cruel and so unfair. Or…

Or, you can live life harder than ever to make up for the life they can’t live.

That’s the option I prefer. So I went to Disney with my family. I rode the Haunted Mansion for her. I ate at Downtown Disney and saved her a seat in my mind. I walked around Animal Kingdom with her in my heart. When I screamed on Tower of Terror I screamed extra loud for her. When I’m singing along to Beauty and the Beast in my car, I’m singing it for her.

My family is already planning another trip to Disney. I can’t wait. I can’t wait to walk through Magic Kingdom’s gates, hear that music and feel her smiling with us. My Grandfather too and countless others that I carry in my heart every single day.

Don’t forget to have a great night!

Today I sat at work listening to a 90’s Pandora station when I heard the song Time Ago by Black Lab. There’s a chance you’ve never heard this song. When I saw the band name, however, I practically channeled Old Ben Kenobi as I thought, “Black Lab… now that’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time”.

People sometimes wonder why I love the 90’s so much. The answer is obviously nostalgia but it goes deeper than that. Nostalgia is definitely fun. It’s fun to reflect back on the past; but there’s a deeper level of nostalgia that I believe genuinely makes time travel possible… for just a millisecond.

Have you ever had that Time Travel moment? When you hear a song, smell a smell or have a thought and for a very brief second you are living in your memory. You can vividly see and feel it and just as quickly you’re back. Music always has the power for me.

As I sat at my desk with this obscure 90’s song playing through my headphones I was suddenly 12 in a bathing suit standing by my cousin’s pool ready to jump in. The song was playing on the stereo behind me and then as quickly as it happened I was back at my desk at work.

It’s what makes me love music so much. To paraphrase Empire Records, music is the glue to this world. Is there anything that holds a time-stamp in our minds better than a song at a crucial moment? Songs can be forever associated with a break-up, a death, a new relationship, a friendship or a road.

When I was in college I had a MP3 player that had very little space on it. I believe I could only fit an hour of music on it. I would listen to it driving to class and home. For whatever reason no matter what this song Les Wirth by the band TwoThirtyEight would come on just as I turned onto some back roads home. I’d go down a hill, over train tracks and then immediately needed to cut right for a sharp turn.

Almost a decade later, when I hear this song, I still can vividly remember that road, that hill, those train tracks and the sharp turn. That shouldn’t be too shocking though, I remember music queues in movies better than movie quotes sometimes.

I didn’t have a lot of friends growing up. I had an even harder time maintaining long lasting relationships with the friends I did have back then. While some kids would hang out with friends after school, I’d be watching movies or listening to music in my basement.

There was a time when I would listen to the Wedding Singer every day. I love that soundtrack still to this day. I didn’t have any specific crush at the time, but ever the hopeless romantic I would listen to songs like Every Little Thing She Does is Magic (the Police), Love My Way (Psychedelic Furs) or Hold Me Now (Thompson Twins) and fantasize about feeling that way towards someone.

In college I was in love with my friend Stacie. It was my freshmen year and the summer prior I had seen Garden State and like most 18 years olds in 2004 it had changed my life. I excitedly pre-ordered the DVD at Suncoast which arrived the day before winter break.

I had plans to hang out with Stacie during that first winter break. I was going to finally tell her how I felt about her. That’s when I found out she had a new boyfriend. I was crushed. I put Garden State into the DVD player and for two weeks it never left the player. It would just loop over and over and over. When I hear those songs (specifically Colin Hay’s I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You) I think of her and that terrible winter.

It’s not all bad memories though. There is still one song that can transport me back to a beautiful and peaceful memory as a child. Like most of the songs I mention here, it’s a bit obscure.

In 1986 The Care Bears II: The Next Generation was released. When it first aired on TV my aunt taped it for me and over the years it was one of my favorite VHS tapes. I recall many sleepovers at my Grandmother’s house watching that and Mary Martin’s Peter Pan. There was a bunny rabbit sleeping bag that I would bury myself in on the couch and watch those tapes.

Care Bears II ends with a song called Forever Young which is probably cheesy by literally every standard, but the song still has an effect on me. I was flying home after an unsuccessful stint living in L.A. with my iPod on shuffle. I was trapped in Chicago at the time due to snow-storms delaying my flights and it was looking like there was a chance I would miss Christmas with my family.

I sat on the floor, completely alone and scared. Forever Young came on and I felt warm suddenly. I felt myself wrapped in that bunny rabbit sleeping bag. I felt like everything would be okay. I closed my eyes and felt that warmth take over my body. The song ended. I opened my eyes. They were letting us board the plane. Everything was going to be okay.

That’s the magic of music. Beyond being a time-stamp for period in your life, it has the power to make you feel comfort when you feel your most alone. You may not ever be able to relive moments, but musics ability to unlock those memories is pretty damn close.

Don’t forget to have a great night!

She cancelled plans again, which is fine but it meant that for the third night in a row I had no plans. After organizing my dresser, packing my car for Monster Mania this weekend and picking out the best horror shirts to wear to the con I realized it was only 9pm and boredom had settled in.

I decided to do something I haven’t done since High School; I got into my car, cranked the radio and drove aimlessly for a few hours.

The playlist was packed with songs from my past. I was pulling away from the Wawa  gas pump while Spacehog sang about their love for ‘the all the all of you’ and started to drive. After an hour sitting silently listening to songs of years past I started to head back home when a sign caught my eye.

My high school was doing a production of Footloose this weekend and tonight was opening night. It was well past 10pm and there were no cars left in the parking lot. Missing the show did not stop me from pulling into the vacant parking lot, picking a nice spot out of view and turning off the car. At first I just stared into the empty field. I don’t know what compelled me to, but I got out of the car and started walking around reminiscing.

When I was in high school I did stage crew for three of the four years. Each year I had different memories and it’s impossible to pick which show was my favorite. My freshmen year we did Anything Goes. It gave me my first taste of classic musicals and started my love of theater. The songs from Anything Goes are still among my favorites and it saddens me that there has yet to be a good film version of this Cole Porter classic.

My Junior year we did Little Shop of Horrors. This was also a blast. Little shop was one of my favorite films ever, I owned the soundtrack and had it memorized. Even better I had a small bit part playing the masochist dentist patient role that Bill Murray made famous (Jack Nicholson played the character in the 1960 original), but I never had more fun than my sophomore year doing Footloose.

There was something special about that specific show that I can’t put my finger on. The whole cast and crew became close friends. The stage crew was the best team we ever had. I remember us spending hours mixing paints in order to create authentic looking aged church pews or believable stain glass windows. One night a few of the the more scientific crew members used bunsen burners and florescent glass to bend and mold a working Burger Joint sign.

That was also the only year that I attended the post-show after party – mostly because I had a massive crush on one of the background dancers. She was a cute girl named Julie who as far as I can remember never said a word to me. The final first act song is I’m Free (originally performed by Kenny Loggins) and it was a one of the bigger dance numbers in the play. From my position backstage I could see Julie dancing perfectly. It’s weird how I still remember exactly how most of the dance steps went despite not actually being on stage doing the dance.

It was around this time I downloaded the song on Napster (or maybe by now things had shifted to Limewire). I remember hating it for no other reason than it didn’t sound EXACTLY like the way our drama club performed it. I remember thinking that Sun Valley’s Drama Club’s 2002 performance of “I’m Free” was the greatest version of that song the world has ever heard (I found a VHS tape of the show recently… it in fact… was not the greatest version the world had ever heard). Over time I grew to appreciate Kenny Loggins’ version as it always reminded me of that period in my life.

I didn’t watch Footloose until I moved to L.A. a few years ago. Prior to that I guess I just had no interest in it. Much like how I convinced myself that no version of “I’m Free” would be better than my high school’s version I think I feared that watching the movie would tarnish the memories of that high school performance. I probably would have never watched it if it wasn’t for my roommate in L.A. being freakishly obsessed with the movie.

My roommate was not exactly the most optimistic person in the world and few would have described him with adjectives like bubbly. One thing he fucking LOVED to do however was dance; and it all stemmed from seeing Footloose as a child. He could not wrap his brain around the idea that I had never seen the movie and made me watch it. I’m glad he did because it really is a pretty great movie.

Eventually I purchased the Footloose soundtrack from a used CD store and was reminded how much I love the song I’m Free and the all memories it provided me from the second I heard the opening notes. Each time the song plays I’m immediately reminded of that 15 year old convinced that a 17-year old dancer would fall head over heels for the geeky stage crew kid who admired her from a distance. I wish I could say my romantic life has advanced over the last decade but alas I still find myself being that guy in the shadows, admiring someone while listening to the songs that remind me of them. This is why at 11pm on a Thursday night I’m walking around the exterior of my old high school listening to Kenny Loggins.

My school had a wonderful track. Many gym classes were spent running that track (or in my case, slowly walking it while discussing music with classmates). I also vividly remember running the track  late at night with my dad, but it probably wasn’t as late as memory is making me think. I had hoped I could walk out on the track and just enjoy the nostalgia but the entire field is surrounded by tall fence with no way to enter outside the regulated hours.

In 2004, there was no place I’d want to avoid more than my school’s track. Now in 2017, I’m disappointedly walking back to my car because I couldn’t walk it. Life is funny sometimes.

Tomorrow will be a busy day. I have a podcast to release and a convention to work. It’s past midnight on the east coast. I should be in bed. Instead I’m watching Footloose and wishing that plans weren’t cancelled.

You know the story, two people hate each other with a burning fire until one day, mid fight, they kiss. And a romance is born…

Theme song: Pond5 “Heavy Electric Guitar Riff”

This morning I put on a Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers T-shirt. I thought nothing of it. I needed a clean shirt, because it’s appropriate and it was a breezy fifty degrees in the continental Northeast so being shirtless would be an unpleasant experience. As I began my day, wearing that T-shirt bought at a Spencer’s for bored suburban kids, a coworker sent via Slack the Entertainment Weekly article showing the 2017 Power Rangers costumes.

My immediate instinct, which I didn’t do, was to take off my shirt and burn it in the office. My second instinct, which I did do, was shut off my laptop and go for a walk. It was a breezy fifty degrees in the continental Northeast.

I didn’t burn my shirt because a) that is arson and b) I would be (pun not intended) fired. But I became restless, because I am tired of this.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BFB8a8Kmzo4/?taken-by=powerrangersmovie&hl=en

I am tired of hearing about the Power Rangers movie. No, I’m not tired of Hollywood’s insistence on summer tentpoles and reboots — the American film industry has always adapted cartoons, comics, plays, and books, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather was adapted from Mario Puzo’s airport book — but tired of it as circus.

I am not tired of the pandering to my childhood, which was fine but not interesting so why are you trying, but the assumption that it is a thing to appropriate. To see it in ostentatious design and called “edgy,” as if it needed permission by those who never cared to exist. I am a mother seeing my daughter participate in a pageant without my permission. No, I do not “own” Power Rangers so Lionsgate, the producers of the film, do not need my permission. But excuse me. I have bothered to care more than most for twenty years. I do not have a say, legally, but y’know? I should have a say.

Power Rangers is not sacred. It is toys, made to sell merchandise and branded products like cereals and comic books and pajamas. I have no delusions what Haim Saban — who by the way is like the twelfth richest person in the world — had always intended for his teenagers with attitude. He was going to parade them and sell them, always. Power Rangers is not Calvin and Hobbes. (I wish more creators had Bill Watterson’s heart). And yet, I give a shit about it.

I give a shit about the TV show. I give a shit about the toys (not the ones made explicitly for children, I find the “for adults” collectibles quite nice). I give a shit about its continuity and its themes, how it entertains me and let me forget the world can be awful. I like to watch Power Rangers when I’m mad about my work. I like to watch Power Rangers when I’m feeling alone. I like to watch Power Rangers when racist, sexist, orange baboon Donald Trump makes one of his vile remarks that is causing irreparable damage to us as a nation. I like to watch Power Rangers when another mass shooting happens and people unfathomably think thoughts and prayers are enough. I like to watch Power Rangers when I see the world at its worst because I want to believe people can selflessly, and proudly, be at their best.

But I am tired of this. This movie. The emerging details, released my publicists at odd ours timed to dominate the news cycle and every bit showing why none of this is a good idea. And the spectacle, oh heavens the spectacle. Power Rangers is becoming a grotesque parade where the internet’s collective noise of Twitter snark and critics’ hot takes creates the sobering experience to bear witness intelligent people whose careers I model mine after say some of the dumbest fucking things about a thing I know too well, while making me feel shitty that I do. (No tweets or examples I can show here, but let’s just say I dread what my colleagues will say when the trailer comes out.) They say never meet your heroes. Well I actually have, and they don’t make me feel as anxious.

I know the internet is a place where everyone has a voice, and it would be horrifically Orwellian if I wanted it silenced. And the best option — log off, walk away — is always an option, as I did today. But I also make my living on the internet, so it’s kind of hard to do my job when all y’all, not just my “heroes” but regular people who never gave an ounce of thought to Eltarian politics or the purpose of the Morphing Grid, or even watched past Power Rangers in Space are making a ruckus. I don’t want you to shut up, but in the name of Zordon, can you do some Wikipedia searching first?

Oh, and if you’re wondering my thoughts on the costumes: They look gross. Why are they glowing blue? Why are their helmets so goofy and look nothing like dinosaurs? Why do the Pink and Yellow Rangers have boob armor and wedges? Why do they look as evil and menacing, and damn near identical, to Rita Repulsa? What is even the point? I want to see them in action because CGI production art does not flatter these suits. Right now, I’d rather they just wear licensed T-shirts.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a child of the 70’s, OR a film geek, that doesn’t know who The Warriors are.

Just in case you AREN’T in the know, The Warriors is a 1979 classic film about a group of gangsters just trying to get home to the safety of Coney Island.

The original cast joined forces with Rolling Stone Magazine for one last subway ride home. They met fans and gang member mimics alike. Check out the short film below.

Across the globe, high school graduates are being dropped off at colleges and universities, unpacking their dopp kits and finding out who in their hall has a car. It’s a tale as old as time. I too was once an impressionable young adult, hungry for knowledge (and keg stands).

If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m quite the nostalgia junkie, so let’s jump in the DeLorean and head back to September 2001, the beginning of my college career. In addition to expanding my mind in the classroom and realizing my severe lack of game in regards to women, I also spent an impressive amount of free time on Audiogalaxy, PureVolume and LimeWire looking for new bands. My junior high and high school experiences as a sometimes punk kid (as punk as you can be in the rural Midwest) had given me a strong foundation of bands to seek out, but these new technologies were far more effective at collecting new music than my older techniques; these included asking the most alternative-looking person at the record store and scouring the CD racks for interesting cover art. It was primitive, but in my defense, I found my all-time favorite punk album that way (AFI – Black Sails in the Sunset) – purchased without hearing a single song and with no knowledge of anything the band had previously released, based solely on the sweet woodcut ship on the front. And maybe song titles like Malleus Maleficarum and Porphyria Tarda Cutanea.

Anyway, the fall of 2001 was a great time for me musically. I was up to my ears – literally! – in new stuff to listen to, and since this was a time before iPods and Zunes were in heavy circulation, I made a mix CD with some of my favorite songs of the time. Below is an annotated list of the tracks that were found on it, with a YouTube playlist of the whole thing at the bottom. Sit back, grab a can of Beast and enjoy the ride.

SIDE 1: Love, somewhat requited

September 2001 was probably one of the best month’s of my music-listening life thus far, as I was introduced to many of my favorite bands, including The Stereo, No Use For a Name, The Starting Line, and The Smoking Popes. The first section of my mix CD was full of sappy love songs and a couple of tracks reflecting my fears of being alone forever. Predictably, my high school relationship fell apart almost as soon as I left for college, and 19-year-old me was convinced my life was over. Thankfully, I didn’t flunk out (my roommate did though) or dip my oil stick in any strange engines (my hallmates did though).

The Stereo – Devotion

Ace Troubleshooter – Denise

Game Face – My Star

One Man Army – Last Word Spoken

No Use For a Name – Why Doesn’t Anybody Like Me?

The Starting Line – Three’s a Charm

Sugarcult – Saying Goodbye

New Found Glory – Heaven

* it’s worth noting that I was already an NFG fan in high school, and had some material by Me First as well, but finding out about Punk Goes Metal and the rest of the Me First discography was awesome.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes – Wild World

SIDE 2: Keeping that frown upside-down

Enough of that happy crap, let’s feel bad about ourselves for a while. Again, I was already an Alkaline Trio, Saves the Day and Ataris fan, but found all this other music I never knew they had released. The Blink-182 song was one of the 6 bonus tracks, which I collected after enjoying Take Off Your Pants and Jacket all summer. While not the last song on the list, Pretty Pathetic is still one of my favorite songs ever. It so perfectly encapsulates the poor me, self-deprecating mindset I sported at the time (and sometimes still do, for better or worse).

Strung Out – Ultimate Devotion

Shai Hulud – Eating Bullets of Acceptance

As Friends Rust – The First Song on the Tape You Make Her

Osker – Disconnect, Disconnect

Smoking Popes – Pretty Pathetic

Saves the Day – This Is Not An Exit

Dashboard Confessional – Again I Go Unnoticed

The Ataris – Looking Back on Today

Blink-182 – What Went Wrong

Alkaline Trio – Sorry About That

There are also 3 missing tracks that I couldn’t find on YouTube – two from a band called Sundaze, and one mystery band I’ve never been able to figure out. Sundaze actually grew into As Tall As Lions, and it seems that they did their best to scrub their previous iteration from the Internet’s collective memory. They also denied that they were in said band when I asked them at Warped Tour 2004, so there’s that.

Here is the full playlist if you want to experience this particular month in my musical history at some later point.

About a year ago, anime fans had plenty to be excited about when we all learned that Sailor Moon would be returning with a new anime adaptation. Since then we’ve waited… and waited… We haven’t heard much of a peep since, aside from being told that it’s still coming.

Well, it seems like our patience is about to pay off! A quick look at the Sailor Moon animation web site greets visitors with a countdown that seems to coincide with the AnimeJapan trade show. While no details are given aside from an image of the moon, it has to be the new show’s formal reveal. It just has to be!

If you couldn’t tell, I’m very excited for this show to debut. Sailor Moon was my favorite anime before I knew what anime was, and little did I know that those early mornings watching magical girls fight monsters would help shape the interests I carry on to this day. Including high school girls. *ahem*

Last November, I was one of the many geeks here in Los Angeles who attended the brand new Comikaze Expo at the LA Convention Center. I was also one of the many who had a great time (the Geekscape booth actually did more business at Comikaze than we did at either WonderCon or SDCC that year). But the new convention wasn’t perfect, with an awkward floor-plan, some understaffing issues and a hall that wasn’t quite right for it’s size. Still, ask anyone, including Comikaze organizer Regina Carpinelli, and they’ll tell you that the event was a success.

But was it enough to ensure that Comikaze would survive to see another year? In today’s “You’re Either Comic-Con or Your Not” convention landscape, even the nationwide Wizard World conventions are unable to keep attendee’s interests. So what’s a Con to do to stand out from the pack?

You rebrand yourself by associating your name with a marquee talent that is instantly recognizable to your target audience. Comic book writer Mark Millar successfully launched Kapow! Comic Con two years ago in London, bringing to Europe some of what made Comic Con so great back in the day (all the Hollywood flash without ignoring the comics). Just this morning, readers woke up to GeekChicDaily buying themselves a new life as the Nerdist News Network, a branch of Chris Hardwick’s popular Nerdist brand. Why not? It’s a smart thing to do.

So why do I think Comikaze Expo is becoming Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo (or Excelsior Expo or Generalisimo-Con or something similarly Stan Lee)? Well, something has to be going on.

First, Comikaze canceled its upcoming spring one-day expo that was going to be held at LACC. Why? I’d like to know. I was looking forward to it. But maybe it’s because Regina Carpinelli is too busy globetrotting with Stan Lee to even return my phone calls or emails.

Here she is in Park City during Sundance:

And she’s also been seen with Stan Lee on enemy territory at last month’s Wizard World New Orleans. Actually, since last summer’s Pow! Entertainment, Comikaze Expo, Geekscape SDCC 2012 party, Regina and Stan seem to have become BFF.

Am I feeling like the jilted lover? Would I want Stan Lee to buy a piece of Geekscape? Probably not. I love Stan Lee, but at our first meeting, Stan was having a tough time getting what Geekscape was all about:

All I’m really saying is two things:

Regina, call a guy back, will ya?

– Expect something big to be announced involving Stan Lee and Comikaze Expo. I can’t say what but I’m guessing a merger/acquisition of some kind.

UPDATE: As I was writing this piece, Comikaze has taken down their homepage. But look what I saw moments before they did! A screen grab of a news story that POW!, Regina and Stan probably don’t want you to see until later this week. That’s what you get for ignoring calls, Reg!

CONFIRMED!
