Fans of the Star Wars Universe already know that the Death Star gets destroyed in “A New Hope.” It took just two well placed torpedo shots from Luke Skywalker shot down an exhaust port, and boom, the massive structure was blown to smithereens.

In the new film from director Gareth Edwards, “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” we get a departure from the traditional younger kid friendly story-telling style in lieu for a more mature style. This is war after all. The Rebels are fighting a desperate battle and the lengths they will go aren’t always pretty in their effort to defeat the Empire.

“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” tells the tale of what led to the rebellion having the ability to blow up the Death Star in “New Hope.” The story opens with where the Death Star originated from, who the players were that created it, and a lot more information about the capabilities of the Empire and the Rebellion, all of which really end up filling the plot holes of “New Hope” and “Empire.”

Forget the cutesy Ewoks, the stupid Jar Jar Binks, and think straight up murder in the name of the rebellion. That’s what you better strap in for when you see “Rogue One.” It’s the adult version, no holds barred, shoot-em up, taking insane chances all for the cause of breaking the Empire. Simply, it’s the Star Wars movie that all the fans of the original, now grown-up, wanted but never knew they would get!

It’s as if story writer John Knoll and Gary Whitta, plus screen writer Chris Weitz (and others, see bottom) had a check list of all the good things about the originals, like interesting settings, cool costumes, bigger than life characters, and a check list of the stupid stuff to avoid, and then went to work to write something that was equally smart and highly entertaining. Forget the choppy stunted dialogue style of the originals and think balanced. Every character with the exception of one (we’ll get to that) is dynamic and three dimensional.

Director Edwards did the same thing cutting back on sequences targeted towards kids and focusing on those moments when humor was appropriate, and avoiding cliche. “Rogue One” is all about the action. The fight sequences and fast paced story all keep you deeply engrossed. There isn’t a dull moment. Further, where “Force Awakens” was a homage to the original, this film breaks new ground while at the same time fitting incredibly well into the original mythos. In a single word, exceptional comes to mind as the film winds down and the story moves towards “A New Hope” as all wraps up nicely into a gorgeous gift to fans.

Along those same lines, the sound track is stand alone incredible with Disney call up man Michael Giacchino, who has a zillion Disney credits to his name. Yes, there’s some moments like Darth Vader’s theme in there, but this film borrows from the style of the original sound tracks, but incorporates totally worthy new pieces. Overly impressive in an age where so many films are going synthesizer/ computer created composing this ones stays traditional but also zips it up into something modern with flavors of the originals.

Character development and selection may seem a bit contrived. We’ve got the kick-ass female lead Felicity Jones, the sexy Han Solo type with the Spanish accent Diego Luna, the “IP Man” Donnie Yen (sure to play up to the massive Chinese audiences), the loyal best bud type, Wen Jiang (also Chinese), and then the adult version of C3PO , the new droid with all the snappy one-liners K-2SO played by Alan Tudyk (Firefly). Even with the main cast seemingly contrived to drive International audiences to the film, all is forgiven because the acting is superb. The exception being the character Saw Gerrera, played by veteran actor Forest Whitaker.

rsz_rogueoneforest

The character itself just doesn’t work. At first he does. His job is to be the one to rescue and raise one of the key characters. As the story evolves and we get to see more of him, he comes across as a hot mess. The costume itself just reminded me of when Whitaker played in “Battlefield Earth” (remember that piece of silliness?). Certainly a lot can be forgiven in the Star Wars Universe. Crazy alien creatures are the norm and so are cyborg baddies like Darth Vader but in comes Saw Guerra which seems cool at first but just winds up being a cliche or all the dumbness you could absorb from all seven prior films. The acting wasn’t the issue here so much, as just the character. However, it’s not enough to bring the film down even a notch.

In the bid to be more geared for adult audiences, there’s a departure from including the mainstream Jedi influence entirely in the film with just a mention here and there of the order, as well as not relying heavily on The Dark Side’s Darth Vader as the supreme villain of the film. Rather Director Edwards focuses on more of what would be good ol’ fashion human bad guys, not magical plot devices, and what comes across and smart choices for the challenges of the main cast to over-come to achieve their objective. Further, rather than leaving unrealistic jumps in the story, Edwards and writers pay attention to the steps of what it would take to accomplish the goals, in affect the story makes sense.

There’s always been a lot of leeway given in the Star Wars Universe for the story to move forward but in this film those story beats are not forgotten or ignored. They are given strict attention so that in the end you have a solid story, performed impeccably and sensibly that all incredibly aligns with “A New Hope.” That attention to story is what really sets this apart from the others and for many this will be easily be toted at the best one to date. That opinion will have to contend with the nostalgia of the originals which of course holds weight for many, but on the basis of just story for story, this one wins hands down.

Disney XD gives us another reason to tune in with their upcoming animated TV series, Big Hero 6. Based on the similarly-named film, the show will kick off right after the events of the movie. We can not only expect Hiro to be fighting off baddies with his buddies, Wasabi, Fred, GoGo, Honey Lemon, and Baymax, but also taking on the challenges of attending college at San Fransokyo Institute of Technology.

The show was announced last March but the cast was just revealed today. Many of the film’s actors will reprise their role in the show, which is a pleasant surprise. From the original cast, there is Maya Rudolph (Aunt Cass), Jamie Chung (GoGo), Scott Adsit (Baymax), Alan Tudyk (Alistair Krei), Ryan Potter (Hiro), David Shaughnessy (Heathcliff), and Stan Lee (Fred’s dad). Wasabi and Fred will have new voices, Khary Payton and Brooks Wheelan respectively.

BIG HERO 6 - "Big Hero 6," an animated television series for kids, tweens and families based on Walt Disney Animation Studios' Academy Award-winning feature film inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, has begun production for a 2017 premiere on Disney XD platforms around the world. (Disney XD)

Additionally, voices of several new characters were named: Jennifer Lewis (Professor Granville), Andrew Scott (Obake), Andy Richter (Globby), Sean Giambrone (Richardson Mole), John Ross Bowie (Mei), Diedrich Bader (Bluff Dunder), Susan Sullivan (Fred’s mom), and Haley Tju (Karmi).

Big Hero 6 the series will premier sometime in 2017.

The second trailer for this years Star Wars film, Rogue One, has just hit the internet. And it is FUCKING incredible. I think I am more excited for this than I was Episove VII. Check it out below.

This trailer is incredible. Director Gareth Edwards really knows how to make stuff feel MASSIVE on film. The music, produced by French composer Alexandre Desplat (Godzilla, Syriana, Argo), is OUTSTANDING. I honestly think this is going to do more than Episode VII. It feels more “real”.

Star Wars: Rogue One hits theaters this December 16th and stars  Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Jonathan Aris.

D23 has become a necessary weekend con to pay attention to. We’ve heard about the clip of Captain America: Civil War that we’ll try to get to you guys, somehow, as fast as we can, but what we have now is just as awesome: The first look at the cast of Rogue One! And yes, Donnie Yen has joined a galaxy far, far away.

rogue-one-cast-photo-d23-1024x682

Man, is it gritty! We’ve all wanted a darker Star Wars, this is literally dark. There’s hardly any blues or yellows!

Oh man, Donnie Yen. I actually had confirmation several weeks ago that he would be in Star Wars, but I had to sit on it for various reasons. It really sucked I couldn’t tell you guys sooner, but you would have found out yourselves if you knew where to look. It wasn’t exactly a heavily-guarded secret.

Besides Donnie Yen The Living God, Rogue One has got a hell of a cast. From left to right in the above photot: Riz Ahmed, Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, Jiang Wen, Donnie Yen. Not pictured but will be in the film are Ben Mendelsohn, Alan Tudyk (yes, THAT Alan Tudyk!), Forest Whitaker (yes, THAT Forest Whitaker!), and Mads Mikkelsen (yes, THAT Mads Mikkelsen — Jesus Rogue One isn’t messing around).

Has the title changed? I was under the impression and had long written it and seen it written as Star Wars: Rogue One, but it seems the title is officially Rogue One with A Star Wars Story as a tagline. I’m also seeing Star Wars Anthology: Rogue One in certain places. Minor details, all that matters is that you know Rogue One and that this is goddamn Star Wars so anything works.

Rogue One is a prequel-ish of sorts, taking place before A New Hope. Directed by Gareth Edwards of 2014’s Godzilla, the movie “will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar” says Lucasfilm CEO Kathleen Kennedy in the press release.

From StarWars.com:

“It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essentialStar Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”

I can’t fanboy enough over Donnie Yen in Star Wars. Felicity Jones and Alan Tudyk are just the cherries on top. Excuse me, I have some Ip Man to watch on loop between now and December 16, 2016. I might even skip The Force Awakens! (Haha, no.)

Thrilling Adventure Hour returned to Comic Con last month in a cross over show with Welcome to Night Vale, an event of such magnitude that they last time they tried it (in Seattle, in March), the recording equipment literally could. not. even.

Performing to a packed house at the Spreckles Theatre in San Diego, the show followed Sparks Nevada, Marshal of Mars (Marc Even Jackson), Crouch (Mark Gagliardi) and the usual Sparks Nevada: Marshall of Mars crew as they travel through space and time to save the moon–allowing for the “Marshal of Mars” and the Night Vale worlds to collide.

Done in three acts (with an intermission!) the first act opens with Wil Wheaton–as the omniscient narrator/god-like being–and quickly segues into “Marshal on Mars”, with Sparks Nevada (Marc Evan Jackson) and Croach (Mark Gagliardi) dealing with the subversively silly criminal element (this time it’s James Urbaniak as a good-guy shoe salesman turned bad and his two robot outlaws). Things go from bad to worse when Pemily Stallwark (Molly Quinn), now Marshal of the Moon, shows up needing help to save Earth’s lunar satellite. An introduction of a timey-wimey-super-duper-don’t-think-about-it-too-hard device allows people to travel across space, time, and apparently dimensions, and Croach is zapped to Night Vale.

Act II begins like a typical Night Vale episode. Cecil (Cecil Baldwin) begins with the news that there is a new Destroy-the-Moon initiative. The citizens of Night Vale, Cecil tells us, have tried throwing objects at the Moon and will shortly escalate to yelling insults at it. Also, a strange, overly literal being has been going around town demanding that people cease their plans to destroy the moon. Cecil, the Mayor Dana Cardinal (Jasika Nicole), Carlos the Scientist (Dylan Marron) and Steve Carlsberg (Hal Lublin) end up getting zapped back to Mars with Croach. And thus ends Act II.

Act III (after a fairly interminable intermission) has the combined casts banding together to save the moon with some (extremely convenient) time-zapping, a few deaths (!!!), a few more resurrections, and heartfelt professions of love, friendships and respect between various pairs. There’s also some discussion about paradoxes and the general head-ache-inducing vagaries of time (and dimension!) travel.

While maybe not the most coherently plotted Sparks Nevada episode (Night Vale tends to eschew plots completely, so it wins by comparison), the combined cast elevated the show; and the audience, eager and ecstatic at the combining of the two fan-favorite shows, did not let a joke slip by them. The verbal sparring between Baldwin, Sparks and Gagliardi is quite possibly some of the best comedic repartee we’ve heard in awhile, and the 30-second half written/half-improv’d competing cries-of-alarm between Carlsberg and Felton (Craig Cackowski) brought the house down.

All in all, the cross over was extremely successful in bringing together the two worlds; it was funny, irreverent, touching and, well, everything we’ve come to expect from both shows.

The episode won’t be aired for awhile, but you can catch up on all the most recent episodes of Thrilling Adventure Hour here and Night Vale here while you wait!

They’re back!

That’s right…it’s the Thrilling Night Vale Hour. No. Wait. The Night Vale Adventure Hour! No, that’s not right either. The Thrilling Nightventure—you know what, we’re gonna stop with that now and get to the details.

Thrilling Adventure Hour live performance with special guests Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk & Molly Quinn.

Created by Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, The Thrilling Adventure Hour is a staged show and podcast on the Nerdist network, where actors you know, like Nathan Fillion, Patton Oswalt, Alan Tudyk, Neil Patrick Harris, and  Patrick Warburton  dress nicely and join the WorkJuice Players (including Marc Evan Jackson, Craig Cackowski, Hal Lublin, Marc Gagliardi and Annie Savage Cross) on stage in non-serialized thrilling adventures (of course!) like Sparks Nevada, Marshal of Mars or Beyond Belief.  It’s recorded live, with limited rehearsal time–meaning anything can, and often does, happen.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour is currently launching a brand new web series on the Nerdist Network, and the graphic novel, released last year, was nominated for an Eisner award.

Welcome to Night Vale, created by Joseph Fink and Jeffrey Cranor, and featuring Cecil Baldwin as the voice of Night Vale, the podcast styles itself as a series of community updates for the small desert town of Night Vale–which exists in a Twilight Zone like world, filled with mysterious lights, hooded figures and secret police.

This is the second time Thrilling Adventure Hour and Welcome to Night Vale have joined forces for a live show. Last March they were live at the Moore Theatre in Seattle, to rave reviews.

Tickets are $15 for just the show, and $100 for the show and the VIP (21+ only) after party, and are available here.

The Avengers, the movie that multitudes of Marvel maniacs have been discussing ad nauseum for over three years now is almost upon us. And the movie’s financial success is pretty much a foregone conclusion at this point, so a sequel is likely to be green-lit the Monday after it opens.

That realization got us wondering- What classic characters will be recruited into the next Avengers Initiative? And who should play them? A few years ago, we gave our ideal Avengers cast for the first film! Here, Geekscape is at it again as we assemble some of our best ideas on who should suit up for Avengers 2!

ALAN TUDYK as GIANT MAN

First off, let’s assume that writer/director Joss Whedon is brought back for the next chapter due to universal fan approval (that happens, right?). Like most directors, Whedon loves to cast actors that he knows can deliver and Alan Tudyk has been stealing scenes since Firefly. Tudyk can bring the intellect, awkwardness, and, yes, even darkness to the role of inventor/hero Hank Pym.

MAURISSA TANCHAROEN as WASP

Tudyk may be in Whedon’s inner circle, but smart and spunky writer/actress Maurissa Tancharoen is family, having recently married his brother Jed. Tancharoen’s dancing background should help her with the flying wirework as she brings the final founding Avenger to the sky and screen.

CAM GIGANDET as QUICKSILVER

The next two Avengers in comics were reformed mutant terrorists Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Quicksilver’s super speed makes him a formidable fighter, but gives him little patience for others. Gigandet’s turn as a cocky, misanthropic pilot in Pandorum makes him a great choice to play Magneto’s son.

ROONEY MARA as SCARLET WITCH

Mara’s star-making performance in 2011’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo gave her a chance to show off her strength with action, accents, and insanity. She’ll need all three to play Quicksilver’s powerful but off-kilter sister.

AARON STATON as VISION

With Scarlet Witch in the mix, her synthetic sometime husband would be a smart addition. Staton brings a simplicity that comes off as serene rather than vapid as Ken Cosgrove on AMC’s Mad Men, perfect for the passionless Vision. Plus, Staton’s motion-captured detective Cole Phelps from Rockstar Games’s L.A. Noire already showed us that he can pull off the “creepy lifeless android” thing.

COLM FEORE as ULTRON

Hank Pym’s misguided breakthrough in artificial intelligence is one of the Avengers’ most fearsome villains, and Feore’s cold, terrifying performance in Stephen King’s Storm of the Century give him all the evil cred he needs.

ANNA TORV as MS. MARVEL

Some fan-favorite New Avengers might jump the line and join the cast, such as USAF officer-turned-superhero Carol Danvers. Anna Torv already plays a super-powered government worker on Fox’s Fringe and is one of very few humans who could pull off that costume.

MICHAEL JAI WHITE as LUKE CAGE

White has already played a superhero in the terrible live-action Spawn film, but he didn’t get a chance to show off his attitude and fighting skills. If Black Dynamite had bulletproof skin… Wait, maybe this should be its own movie.

MIA KIRSHNER as SPIDER-WOMAN

Kirshner was sexy and dangerous as recurring assassin Mandy on 24, proving she has what it takes to bring SHIELD/HYDRA double agent and super-powered femme fatale Jessica Drew to life.

JOE MANGANIELLO as HERCULES

Few men have the body to emulate a god (or demi-god), but Manganiello’s True Blood nude scenes keep him in the gym pretty perpetually. A recurring role on How I Met Your Mother showed the former Flash Thompson’s comedy chops, which he’d need to pull off the mirthful Prince of Power.

Did we miss? Hit? What other AVENGERS would you like to see in a sequel? Let Geekscape know in the comments below!
