Well, looks like the time has finally arrived.

Announced just a couple of hours ago, Disney will be releasing the first public teaser for The Incredibles 2 sometime tomorrow on Saturday, November 18th. The announcement was just a short video with text with a brief Jack Jack laugh at the end, but nonetheless, people are excited. If there’s only one sequel that people have wanted Pixar to make in the midst of all their other completely unnecessary sequels, this one was the most necessary and seemed to have the most potential. What are your thoughts on the original Incredibles? Are you excited about the sequel? Tell us in the comments below!

The Cars series isn’t Pixars strongest brand when it comes to movies.

While it’s merchandise selling skills are legendary, the movies always seem to come up short and seem to lack the imagination of other Pixar films. In fact most people think the Cars films were the first time where Pixar really didn’t put as much effort into this project as their others. Well, after the nightmarish car crash that was Cars 2, Pixar sets out to redeem themselves and the series with Cars 3, and it actually doesn’t look that bad.cars-3

The teaser shows Lightning Mcqueen (Owen Wilson) taking a sharp turn and then flying through the air. He’s also caught a bit on fire. The teaser ends with the tagline “Everything will change”. Even if the film goes back to being pretty mediocre next trailer, The visuals in this movie are freaking gorgeous. Check out the trailer below, and make sure to tell us what you think of the trailer in the comments.

In the next 3 years Pixar will release 4 new movies, but only 1 of them will be an original film, Coco, slated for release on November 22nd, 2017. But even before that we’ll be getting Cars 3 on June 16th, 2017. After that, Toy Story 4 will release on June 15th 2018, and then The Incredibles 2 will follow on June 21st, 2019. While Coco and The Incredibles 2 seem like exciting ventures, Cars 3 and especially Toy Story 4 seem to wear on peoples patience with the company. It’s also sparked mass debate about whether Pixar should be doing so many sequels when the quality of them has been pretty split among them.

Fear not though! In a recent interview with  Entertainment Weekly, Pixar president Jim Morris has stated that the company will be heavily focusing on original content after Toy Story and Incredibles as they’d rather start creating new stories rather than build upon their current franchises. Are you excited for Pixars shift back to original content, or are there still some sequels you want to see from them? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: Following the latest teaser from earlier this year, Disney today released a hilarious, short new international teaser for this Summer’s Finding Dory.

As revealed back at D23, the film “reunites Dory with friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale? Also featuring the voices of Albert Brooks, Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy, Disney·”

I was a huge fan of Finding Nemo while growing up (well, I’m a huge fan of most Pixar films, I guess), and as such, I cannot wait to see what’s in store for Dory, Nemo, Marlin, and pals when Finding Dory hits theatres on June 17th.

Take a look at the full trailer below, and let us know how nostalgic and warm it makes you feel.

Briefly: Following the first trailer from all the way back in November, Disney today released a hilarious, short new international teaser for this Summer’s Finding Dory.

Briefly: It feels as though it was just yesterday that Disney/Pixar debuted the first poster for next year’s Finding Dory (it was), and today the company has launched the first teaser trailer to go with it.

The trailer debuted this morning, naturally, on Ellen DeGeneres’ EllenTube, and even from this hilarious, brief first footage, its clear that Finding Dory should easily match the tone, heart, and humour of Finding Nemo.

As announced at D23, the film “reunites Dory with friends Nemo and Marlin on a search for answers about her past. What can she remember? Who are her parents? And where did she learn to speak Whale? Also featuring the voices of Albert Brooks, Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy, Disney·”

Pixar hit a home run with this Summer’s Inside Out, and I already know that I’ll be bawling my eyes out when The Good Dinosaur hits theatres later this month. That said, Finding Nemo remains one of my favourite animated films of all time, and as such, I’m incredibly excited to see some footage from this one.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Finding Dory swims into theaters on June 17, 2016.

Briefly: We haven’t heard a lot from the Finding Dory front in quite some time now (aside from a little bit of news at this year’s D23), but today Disney has debuted the very first teaser poster for its anticipated sequel, and it’s pretty damned adorable.

‘Inside Out’ is the story of an 11-year-old girl, Riley (Kaitlyn Dias), whose life is uprooted when her father (Kyle MacLachlan) takes a new job in San Francisco. The move turns out to be tougher than she expected goes as expected as she has a hard time adjusting to her new home and school, while still missing her old friends.

Meanwhile inside her mind, the five emotions are running the show in the headquarters: Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger. Together they are responsible for how Riley deals with situations with the proper emotional responses. The move also disrupts life in headquarters as Joy and Sadness have a scuffle and get inadvertently sucked up by one of the long-term memory tube. Now the two go on a bi-polar adventure in a race to help Riley regain her emotions with the help of the worlds greatest friend, BING BONG.

Inside-Out-Bing-Bong

As the father of a 10 year old daughter, this was hitting to close to home. I have found myself thinking about my daughter “why she is acting way to emotional” over spilled milk. Now i know it was Sadness in control. Pixar normally gets me to tear up but ‘Inside Out’ was the first to have me let out an audible cry during the film. My wife and daughter gave me a weird look as the tears rolled down my cheek. My family really enjoyed the film and really rank it high with best of the Pixar films. My only complaint was that it needed more Bing Bong. I feel like ‘Inside Out’ can be on par with Dr. Suess’ “Oh, the places you’ll go!” as a good coming of age story to experience with your kids as they grow older.

InsideOutBlurayComboArt

The bonus features on the Inside Out’ Blu-ray are so abundant that they needed two discs! We get tons of interviews from a variety of people involved in production of the film. The Bonus features include:

Riley’s First Date? – This was a cute little short, it delves in the command center of Riley’s parents and how they deal with her going on her first date. It’s not the best of the Pixar shorts but it was a fun none the less. I think every down to Earth dad can relate to Riley’s dad and how he handled the situation especially when they found a common bond.  Hopefully the next short can be a Bing Bong Prequel.

LAVA (Theatrical Short Film) – When i first saw this short at the theaters before Inside Out, it set me and everyone else up emotionally. I witnessed tears shed and couples embracing each other after the short. Nothing has changed, this short got me good with its catchy tune lovely message.

Story of the Story – A film 4 years in the making, Director Pete Docter talks about the evolution of ‘Inside Out’. The original concept of the films is completely different from what we got as the final product. There was a lot of concepts that went though trial and error including teaming up Joy with all the different motions including Bing Bong to be the main protagonists for the film. Oh Bing Bong.

Paths to Pixar: The Women of Inside Out – My daughter is at a crossroads where she changes her future ambitions everyday. Lately she’s decided she wants to be an artist and animator, asking me recently for an animators table for Christmas.  So this was one of my favorites of the bonus features because it helps deliver a strong message for young woman that anything is possible with hard work and determination. This feature follows women that were involved with the making of ‘Inside Out‘ giving anecdotal experiences in achieving there dream careers. Nothing involving Bing Bong here.

Mixed EmotionsThe filmmakers talk about how they decided which emotions to focus on in the story and how they went about creating each one’s distinct personality and visual identity. Very early on before it was settled on Sadness, Fear and Bing Bong were the top choices. It would have been interesting to see it with Bill Hader taking the lead with Amy Pohler.

Mapping the Mind – The artists take you through the process of designing and creating the look  inside of Riley’s mind and how Command Center had evolved. One favorite area that went by the wayside was a sort of shanty town where Bing Bong lead over other imaginary friends.

Our Dads, the Filmmakers – This was a behind the scenes look at the creative process between long time collaborators Pete Docter and Michael Giacchino hosted by their daughter Elie Docter (daughter of director, Pete Docter) and Grace Giacchino (daughter of composer, Michael Giacchino).

Into the Unknown: The Sound of Inside Out – This is a cool look at the process sound designer Ren Klyce. You get a first hand look at some of the objects used in creating the aural world of ‘Inside Out’.

The Misunderstood Art of Animation Film Editing – Learn more about the crucial role of an animation film editor, who helps take the story from its earliest, most exploratory versions, to the final, polished film you see onscreen.

Deleted Scenes – This seemed more of early concepts than an actual deleted scenes.

  • Riley Grows Up – In this scene from a version of the film where the primary relationship was between Joy and Fear (then named Freddie), the emotions begin to notice a change in Riley.
  • Joy’s Decline – Joy’s struggles to make sense of the limitations on Riley’s behavior that seem to be springing up at every turn.
  • Misdirection – Joy and Freddie (Fear) encounter a group of Riley’s “retired” imaginary friends, including an early version of Big Bong.
  • Construction – Joy is guided through Riley’s mind by a radical non-conformist, Bing Bong, outraged by the demolition of older areas like Imagination Park.

‘Inside Out’ is available now on on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Download.

Briefly: This one kinda snuck up on me.

Sure, I’m a gigantic Pixar fan, but after Inside Out‘s incredible emotional roller-coaster from earlier this year, I didn’t think that Pixar could have another doozy in them.

Naturally, it’s too early to tell, but based on the marketing we’ve seen thus far it looks as though this month’s The Good Dinosaur may be even more adorable (and emotional) than our adventure with Riley this Summer.

A new clip from the film has just debuted online, depicting a beautiful scene of a scared Arlo witnessing the wondrous world of prehistoric fireflies.

Seriously, it’s freaking adorable.

The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

Take a look at the clip below, and let us know if you’re excited for The Good Dinosaur. The film hits theatres on November 25th!

Looks like the Disney D23 Fan Expo is really blowing up today! With the recently announced/confirmed Incredibles 2we were given another treat! Toy Story 4 has been announced, a poster revealed and story arc laid out.

Toy Story 4 Poster

There have been some loose details floating around about what you could expect from the fourth installment in the Toy Story franchise. Pixar president Jim Morris was quoted in March saying

The third movie ended in a beautiful way and completed a trilogy. I think this movie is not part of this trilogy. It is a separate story, which in turn I do not know if will be continued. Never begin a project with that in mind. It is not a continuation of the end of the story of Toy Story 3.Temporarily it is, but it will be a love story. It will be a romantic comedy. It will not put much focus on the interaction between the characters and children. I think it will be a very good movie.

That lead fans to speculate as to what on earth could come from toys falling in love. Well, a nicely timed Tweet from ABC’s Good Morning America kind of nails down what the plot is going to be about.

It will be interesting to see what Pixar does with the Bo Peep character. She has been relegated to scenery in Toy Story 2 and didn’t even appear in Toy Story 3.

Toy Story 4 is slated to hit theaters June 16th, 2017

D23, the Disney Fan Expo is in full swing this weekend. The first images from the convention are starting to hit the internet and BOY DO WE HAVE A GOOD ONE FOR YOU! Looks like The Incredibles 2 is actually going to happen! Check out the official poster!

Incredibles 2 poster

And THATS ALL WE KNOW! Incredibles 2 is “coming soon” sometime in 2016, according to IMDB. Brad Bird is directing.

Briefly: It may be hard to believe, but our little girl is growing up.

That’s right, Inside Out‘s Riley is going on her very first date.

Riley’s First Date is a new Pixar short that’s set to debut with the Inside Out Blu-Ray release on October 13th. Based on the first clip from the short (watch it below), it looks like Riley’s set to go skating with a boy (yep, that same boy from the end of the film), and her parents are not having it.

You can take a look at the clip below, and be sure to let us know just how much you loved Inside Out! We’d also love to know just how many times you cried during the feature. Me? Definitely less than 10.

The trailer for ‘The Good Dinosaur’ is out and it looks amazing. Inside/Out being a big success this Summer has refreshed my faith in Pixar’s ablility to produce top notch original stories and has me excited to see what it will bring to the table this time around.

That opening soundtrack to the trailer had me hooked right away, and I don’t know if it’s just a Pavlovian effect, but I was already getting emotional. Also, both the animation of the characters and the background are incredible, but juxtaposition of the different art of kept throwing me off. I’m sure I’ll get used it to once we start to hear the dialogue and have better context of whats going on and the surroundings. On the same note, I can understand that maybe seeing lifelike dinosaurs speaking will be too much like Disney’s older dino movie, Dinosaur

E3 is behind us… and Kenny’s here to help us sift through the aftermath! What won the show and what wasn’t so great? Before we get into all that though, Adam Murray is here to let us know that ‘Inside Out’ is one of the best post-Wall-E Pixar films but his experience of going to see it was pretty traumatizing. We give our last words on the box office onslaught that is ‘Jurassic World’ and we talk about the Will Ferrell Lifetime Original curiosity ‘A Deadly Adoption’! Enjoyables!

Briefly: Earlier today on Ellen, Amy Poehler and Bill Hader debuted a brand new trailer for Pixar’s next wonderful-looking feature, Inside Out.

The trailer is totally beautiful, and as with most Pixar titles (Cars 2 aside), this one looks like something special.

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

The new trailer shows far more footage than we saw last time around, and gives us a great idea of just what the film will be about. Ready your tissues (there’s a few tear-jerking seconds in here), take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Inside Out hits theatres on June 19th.

Briefly: Alright, so this first teaser trailer doesn’t show much of Pixar’s next likely-masterpiece, Inside Out.

In fact, it spends far more time looking at Pixar’s past films than it does showing off its latest, but I still felt tears welling up and goosebumps on my skin. Nobody can tug at the heartstrings like Pixar does, and I’m sure that Inside Out will carry that tradition, especially since it’s about emotions.

Here’s the synopsis:

Inside Out is coming from Monsters, Inc. and Up director Pete Docter, and stars Mindy Kaling, Amy Poehler, Bill Hader, Phyllis Smith, and plenty of others. Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you think! Inside Out hits theatres on June 19th, 2015!

Are you looking forward to heading back into this world?

Disney has just released a new trailer for the anticipated prequel, and while it doesn’t really reveal anything new, it does a great job of reminding us how much fun the feature is going to be. I was just 11 years old when Monsters, Inc. released, and I’m beyond excited to see how it all began.

Monsters University hits theatres on June 21st. Watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Disney today released a cool new trailer for the upcoming Monsters Inc. prequel, Monsters University. This preview is much different than the charming first trailer we showed you back in February, focussing almost entirely on the overarching story of the film.

Monsters University hits theatres on June 21st, and looks like a great time! Watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Monsters Inc. released when I was just ten years old, so I’m really looking forward to seeing some new content featuring these characters!

“Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

In July of 2012, Pixar announced that John Carter director (and Finding Nemo co-director) Andrew Stanton would helm the next instalment in the Finding Nemo franchise. Since then, we’ve heard plenty of casting news (well, at least Albert Brooks and Ellen Degeneres), but nothing about the either the film’s plot, or when we’d be able to see it.

Today, Disney announced the film’s title, release date, and a little bit of plot detail. Finding Dory will swim into theatres on November 25, 2015. From the press release, the plot takes place “about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life.”

Well, I’m in. I love Finding Nemo and the world that Pixar created for it. I can’t wait to jump into this one.

Read the full press release below, and let us know what you think!

FD

When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar®-winning film “Finding Nemo,” she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory”—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.

“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.”

Director and Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton takes audiences back to the extraordinary underwater world created in the original film. “There is no Dory without Ellen,” said Stanton. “She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world—not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.”

According to Stanton, “Finding Dory” takes place about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life.

“Finding Nemo” won the 2003 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature; the film was nominated for three additional Oscars® (Best Writing, Original Screenplay; Best Music, Original Score; Best Sound Editing). It was also nominated for a Golden Globe® Award for Best Motion Picture–Comedy or Musical. In 2008, the American Film Institute named “Finding Nemo” among the top 10 greatest animated films ever made. At the time of its release, “Finding Nemo” was the highest grossing G-rated movie of all time. It’s currently the fourth highest grossing animated film worldwide. The film has more than 16 million Likes on Facebook, and Dory—with more than 24 million—is the most Liked individual character from a Disney or Disney•Pixar film.

DeGeneres’ distinctive comic voice has resonated with audiences from her first stand-up comedy appearances through her work today on television, in film and in the literary world. Her syndicated talk show, “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” is in its 10th season and has earned 38 Daytime Emmy® Awards. DeGeneres has won 12 People’s Choice Awards and the Teen Choice Award for Choice Comedian for three consecutive years. Additionally, her show won two Genesis Awards and a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Talk Show Episode. For her unforgettable turn as Dory, DeGeneres was nominated for an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance.

Plot details are still scare on this one (and by scarce I mean nonexistent), but who wouldn’t want to jump back into Nemo‘s world?

Finding Nemo 2 news has been circling around since Summer 2012, when we learned that Finding Nemo co-director Andrew Stanton would be sitting in the chair solo for the sequel. Fan favourite Ellen Degeneres then signed to reprise her role as Dory, which left everyone wondering whether Albert Brooks would be back as well.

Today, you rest easy; Albert Brooks has signed on for Finding Nemo 2, according to Deadline. He’ll be reprising his role of Marlin for the new film.

No word yet on who will be voicing Nemo, as I’m guessing that Alexander Gould‘s voice has changed slightly since 2003.

Finding Nemo 2 is expected to hit theatres in 2016.

Disney and Pixar today released the theatrical trailer for their upcoming Monsters Inc. prequel, Monsters University.

I’m really excited for this one; I’m a huge fan of these characters and the world they come from, so after twelve long years (has it really been that long) I can’t wait to see Mike and Sulley in another adventure.

Wow, I was only ten years old the first time I saw Monsters Inc…

In any case, check out the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Monsters University scares its way into theatres on June 21st!

Pixar has a new film releasing this Summer. Maybe you’ve heard of it? It’s a little flick called Monsters University, and it’s a prequel to 2001’s hilarious Monsters, Inc.

Of course, a new Pixar film means a new Pixar short. I love my Pixar short films like I love few other things in this world. It is absolutely incredible how much emotion can be conveyed and how much story can be told in just a few short, incredible moments.

Ahead of Monsters University will be a gorgeous looking short film called The Blue Umbrella. Pixar treated The Wall Street Journal to a sneak peak of the short, which I (expectedly) instantly fell in love with. This shit looks beautiful.

Check out the clip below, and let us know what you think! The Blue Umbrella hits theatres in front of Monsters University on June 20th.

Monsters University is coming! Next Summer we’ll finally get to see how Mike and Sulley came to be the best friends that we saw in 2001’s Monsters, Inc.

Disney has just released a teaser poster for the film featuring the lovable duo (again voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman) in their university letter jackets. Cute stuff!

I can’t wait! Monsters University will hit theatres on June 21, 2013! Excited?

For the past few weeks we’ve heard plenty of rumors regarding who would direct the highly anticipated Star Wars: Episode VII. At the same time, a screenwriter for the next chapter in the sci-fi franchise is still being sought. According to Vulture, the current leading contender to work on the films’s screenplay is Academy Award winning writer Michael Arndt.

Arndt has previously worked on Little Miss Sunshine, Pixar’s Toy Story 3 as well as the screenplay for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Ardnt has written a 40 to 50 page treatment for the film and will most likely pen a draft for the project. The site reports that the film is looking at a 2014 shoot to get it into theaters in 2015.

So, what about the director? Ardnt’s treatment will be hitting the desks of many of the top directors out there including Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird. We’re not saying that any of these directors are interested in the project but Disney apparently is looking to offer the film to the big directors first.

Ardny is well known as a Star Wars fan and has close relationship with Disney’s Pixar. So it shouldn’t be no surprise that Lucasfilm and Disney would have an interest in him writing the next chapter in the Star Wars saga. As prior stated in these matters…keep an eye for official announcements soon.

Each year around Halloween I watch re-runs of old horror movies and attend fright fests in the area, but next year Pixar Animation Studios has promised something that will probably take the place of Friday the 13th Part 5 on my list. They have announced that for next year’s Halloween season they plan to release a TV special known as Toy Story of Terror.

From what we’ve heard, Toy Story of Terror will fall under the creepy motel/murder mystery genre. It follows the toys as they arrive at a roadside motel where one of them inexplicably disappears and the survivors must solve the mystery before they’re all gone.

It hasn’t been confirmed whether the same actors from Toy Story 1, 2, & 3 will be returning as the voices of Buzz, Woody, and all the other lovable characters from the series franchise, but I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

Andrew Stanton’s first live-action movie John Carter may have been a gigantic flop for Disney but that doesn’t seem to be stopping Stanton from getting work. Deadline is reporting that Stanton has officially come on-board as the director for the sequel to Finding Nemo. Pixar won’t confirm this of course but his working on the sequel makes complete sense. He did after all win not one but two Oscars for Pixar with Finding Nemo and Wall-E.

The sequel is in development so no other details are known at this time but supposedly Disney is also open to the giving him another crack at directing a live-action movie. Sure, John Carter was a $200 million dollar loss for the studio but that’s not Andrew Stanton’s fault. I thought it was a great movie but was just marketed wrong. I look forward to seeing more from him.

Now that the dust has settled and the internet has gone on to complain about new things, I thought it might be an apt time to examine Disney/Pixar’s Brave in more detail.  Now, granted I’m sure many of you are already exceedingly weary all of the Brave chatter and articles, but a movie such as this fascinates me. For one, as the CinemaScore would suggest,  Brave isn’t a bad movie–it’s just a spectacularly mediocre one; as Douglas Adams would say, “mostly harmless.” Well, considering this is coming from the studio that has produced over the past 17 years a voluminous cannon of movies unmatched by anybody else in Hollywood, mediocre just doesn’t cut it for me. But, in what is probably the larger point, it could have been so good. (And, yes, I’m aware that our fearless Geekscape leader really loved the film.)

So, let’s make Brave good.  Instead of just criticizing what doesn’t work, let’s workshop this sucker until it actually does.  Here it is, ladies and germs, the Top 10 Ways to Fix Pixar’s Brave.

(Obviously, massive spoilers are below)

6.) Get into the action!

Yeah…yeah…it’s an ancient screenwriting tip: start in medias res. I’m not reinventing the wheel here. But, Brave would have really benefited from cutting a good 10 to 15 minutes from its first act, and basically starting with the scene where Merida is “auditioning” her suitors. Instead, we get a lot of exposition of her being a free spirit, including an opening song montage. I suppose you could argue that all this Bohemian frolicking is used to develop Merida’s character, but honestly, is her character really that deep?  She’s a Princess who is being forced to live a life she does not want. Holy crap, is that a cliché starting point! Major props to Pixar for giving us a female centric lead character. That still doesn’t excuse the fact that she’s a walking stock character (C’mon! Splitting the arrow! Mel Brooks killed that shtick 19 years ago with Robin Hood Men in Tights). Brave shouldn’t waste so much time examining the fact that she’s an unconventional princess, because that’s not really what the movie is about. The film is about a mother and daughter learning to understand each other (think Finding Nemo with reversed gender roles). So, from a story point, get to the Suitor competition earlier, have her visit the Witch sooner, have the Bear/Mother transformation happen earlier, and ultimately, give yourself some more script space for…..

5.) Mother and Daughter Bonding Time

For a movie that is so conventional in its structure, Brave feels oddly misshapen. The first act is far too long, whereas the second and third act are improperly developed. The best scene in the movie occurs when Merida and Mother Bear (Queen Elinor) fish with one another. They are bonding–developing and rebuilding a relationship. However, essentially, the directors have their relationship change within that single scene. Granted, I like a Rocky-montage as much as the next guy, but Brave should have been about the adventure and journey that mother and daughter go on together. Instead of one scene, have it be several: show them in peril together, make them work together. Show how both Merida’s free spirited ways and Momma’s conservative teachings can be fused together so each takes the best from one another. There’s a shot after the fishing sequence where the camera jibs up to the landscape showing a lengthy path of wisps indicating a long and perilous journey. But, we as the audience never get to see that journey–we literally jump cut to them arriving at their destination. That’s the equivalent of Sam and Frodo looking at Mount Doom in the distance and then immediately arriving at the peak in the next scene, turning to each other and exclaiming “Gosh, I’m pooped! What a long walk!”  As a result, the sequence in the cave where Merida and Queen Elinor confront the evil bear, Mor’du, ends up just being the next step in their journey, instead of the climax. Funny thing is, the screenwriters of the film understand this larger point on a macro level as we see the results of “mother/daughter bonding time”  when Merida gives the speech in the banquet hall. The problem is that the film doesn’t earn the moment. It happens because the plot needs it to happen, not because the characters have actually learned and grown together.

4.) More Menace

Behind every great  fairytale is an even better villain. Think of Scar from the Lion King. Now, THAT’S evil.  The bear Mor’du doesn’t cut it because, frankly, he doesn’t do enough. The most frustrating thing is that the framework is there. I mean, essentially, the story implies he destroyed the Scottish kingdoms by turning against the other leaders. Wouldn’t it be cool if he had a more developed arc, where he is attempting to destroy the four kingdoms because he knows that, as a bear, he could never lead them? It’s the ole’ idea that if he can’t rule, then nobody can. Not only would this have added much needed complexity and depth to the plot, but it would have made his ultimate death more substantial. Plus, it would mean that Merida fought for something more than just herself and her personal mistakes.

3.) Even Magic Needs Rules

The weird thing about us moviegoers is that we are willing to believe anything on screen as long as such things operate within clearly defined rules. Brave never establishes these boundaries. Magic happens. That’s it. How do the wisps work? How do they appear? Why two sunsets until the bear spell is permanent? Why, of all animals, does the witch turn people into bears? Why does the witch’s home change locations? Brave seems far too content to answer all these questions with a nonchalant shrug of magic and pixie dust. That’s not a good enough answer for me. The movie needs to make decisions supported by rules. I’m not saying to ditch the fantastical elements altogether, but at least have the courtesy to define them.

2.) Characters, Not Mechanisms

Brave suffers from a big problem: its characters often act as plot mechanisms instead of…you know…actual characters. The biggest offender is the Witch.  She’s not integrated into the story whatsoever. She appears, makes her magic cake, and then–poof–she’s never seen again. Not only does this introduce the odd question of why there is a wood-whittling, bear obsessed Witch in the middle of the forest, it also means her character only serves as a stepping stone to the next plot point. How do you fix this? I say ditch the witch (hey, that rhymed!) all together. With the introduction of the wisps it’s made clear that there is magic in the world. It would be much more interesting if the wisps themselves were responsible for the mother’s transformation. Instead of introducing more ancillary characters, use what’s already established in our defined magical world (i.e. see above) to incite change.

The same problem exists with several other characters, especially the three clan leaders and their respective Suitors. While I definitely admire Brave for not giving us a cliche “prince” for Merida to fall in love with, do all the firstborn sons have to be so useless?  If we revisit the idea of Mor’du as a more substantive villain, perhaps the three suitors can help Merida in the third act as she faces Mr. Evil Bear head-on. Merida and the Suitors could work and fight together, protecting the kingdom as a unified team, each using their respective strengths to come out on top. Not only would this give the movie a much needed action set piece (ala the Monsters Inc. door sequence or the final fight in the Incredibles), it would also allow Merida to gain the trust and respect of the Suitors and the clans, even if she’s still not willing to give up her hand.

1.) Girl Power, Not Jerk Power

Maybe I’m crazy here, but Merida comes off as kind of a jerk.  Granted, I get that she’s a strong woman who is being unfairly oppressed by societal norms. Still, she essentially gives her mother a poisoned cake that has completely unknown effects. Heck, it could have killed the Queen for all she knew. And then, to top it off, she doesn’t feel that sorry about it–after Mom becomes a bear she immediately blames the Witch instead of herself. While we eventually get a muffled apology from Merida at the end, it feels tacked on and forced. Merida never really changes as essentially she sort of gets what she wants without any negative consequences.  Merida’s arc should be that of changing from a free spirited selfish girl, to a free-spirited and courageous leader. And, we as an audience need to watch that change happen in real time. If her arc would have been constructed that way, as the sun rises at the end, we would feel genuine emotion, instead of being told to feel genuine emotion. Now, that, ladies and gentleman, is the Pixar magic.

Whew! We did it! Brave is now a much better movie. Pixar, be sure to send all subsequent royalties my way. I accept pay pal.
