Will there be a Punisher Season 3? With Marvel’s deal with Netflix almost at an end (Jessica Jones Season 3 is still on its way) it appears unlikely. But we still have Season 2 to deal with so I sit down with Ian Kerner to talk through the 13 episodes story arch. Right off the bat, I say that Punisher Season 1 may be my favorite Marvel Netflix show… so is Season 2 another bad ass brawl-fest? What’s up with Billy Russo becoming Jigsaw? Is Frank in full on Punisher mode when we meet him? Is this season as solid as the first? Where does it rank amongst the other Marvel Netflix shows? And what might be the future for these characters after Netflix? Ian and I do a deep dive through all these subjects so get ready and here is your SPOILER WARNING!

Marvel’s popular Daredevil has returned to Netflix for a 3rd Season… but does this one hit a bullseye!?! Bad pun. I know. But things are a bit rockier for the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen in the wake of Netflix’s cancellation of both Iron Fist and Luke Cage. What does that mean for future Marvel Netflix shows? Or the upcoming Disney streaming app? And as we get into this SPOILER FILLED episode, what were the highlights of the season? What do we still have questions about? Where do we go moving forward? Really, we just want to keep talking about how awesome Bullseye’s origin was and can’t wait to see more of him! But obviously, we do that in a ton of detail! It’s all here so enjoy!

Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television, moderated the NYCC panel Marvel and Netflix and was packed with surprise appearances and announcements. Is started off with the cast of ‘Iron Fist’ making an appearance to introduce the teaser trailer.  Surprise guests included an appearance by Erik LaRay Harvey (Diamondback), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/The Punisher), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), which it was announced that she will be joining the cast of ‘The Punisher’.

The end of the very end of the panel featured the biggest surprise of the night when the main cast of the ‘The Defenders’ united on stage for the first time. Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) , Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and from joined Finn Jones (Danny Rand).

There was one more surprise guest, Sigourney Weaver (Avatar and Aliens), and it was revealed that she would be playing the villain of the series. There was no announcement of who she would actually be portraying. There is no doubt that the Hand will be a force to reckon with, so maybe she will be a part of the clan.

It’s that wonderful time of the week again, New Comic Book Day! Weekly Reads is where we take the time to reflect upon last week’s titles.

Image

Kill or be killed 001

Let’s begin with Image this week as they arguably have the most hyped release of the week, the latest from Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips, Kill Or Be Killed!

I avoided as many details about this book as I could so didn’t really know what to expect going in. I thought I had it figured out half way through then it took a twist that I didn’t see coming, at all! The description reads:

The bestselling team of ED BRUBAKER and SEAN PHILLIPS (THE FADE OUT, CRIMINAL, FATALE) launch their new monthly series: KILL OR BE KILLED, the twisted story of a young man who is forced to kill bad people, and how he struggles to keep his secret as it slowly ruins his life and the lives of his friends and loved ones. Both a thriller and a deconstruction of vigilantism, KILL OR BE KILLED is unlike anything BRUBAKER & PHILLIPS have ever done.

It’s the why he is forced to kill people that is so damn intriguing. Writing is tight. Drawing is awesome. I’m hooked. Go pick this one up.

Paper Girls 008

We’ve been talking about Paper Girls for awhile now, but I thought I’d give it another shoutout this week as there has been a lot of people recommending this series to people who loved Netflix’s Stranger Things and I wanted to jump on that band wagon as well. Just be sure to start with issue #1!

💪 Kill Or Be Killed #1
💪 Paper Girls #8

DC

I’m a glutton for punishment. I did a whole lot of DC reading again this week. Nothing was too extraordinary but there were some pleasant surprises.

Batman and Green Arrow continue to be my favourite titles. Surprisingly, Green Lanterns has almost made it’s way onto that list, I’m loving this “Red Planet” story arc.

Suicide Squad - Rebirth 001

If you were let down by the movie, Rob William’s and Jim Lee’s Suicide Squad may be able to redeem it for you. Although, I was slightly disappointed to see Jim Lee didn’t draw the Rebirth issue, however, Philip Tan did a great job on this.

👌 Aquaman #4
💪 Batman #4
💪 Green Arrow #4
💪 Green Lanterns #4
👌 Harley Quinn #1
👌 Justice League #2
👌 Nightwing #2
💪 Suicide Squad – Rebirth #1
👌 Superman #4

Marvel

The Punisher 004

Alright, one lonely Marvel title this week, but it was a good one. The Punisher #4 is essentially an issue long car chase with a side of blood spatter! Like I’ve said before, Becky Cloonan isn’t reinventing the wheel, just doing a good job steering it the way it likes to be. Also, Dillion is perfect for drawing The Punisher.

💪 The Punisher #4

Here it is Geekscapists, the ‘Daredevil’ Season 2 spectacular with Ian Kerner that you’ve been waiting for! There are TONS OF SPOILERS in this episode but obviously we ALL spent our weekends watching Season 2 so we’re ready for it! The Punisher! Elektra! The rise of The Hand! This was a pretty stacked season (was it better than Season 1?) so there’s a lot to talk about! Let’s get to it!

‘Daredevil’ Season 2 is almost upon us and that means a new iteration of The Punisher, one of the most mangled and misrepresented characters in Marvel cinematic history! To help us wade through Frank Castle’s movie graveyard, Lon Strickland comes on the show to argue that Dolph Lundgren’s 1989 version is the best so far! Beyond that, we talk about Spider-Man dropping in on the ‘Captain America: Civil War’ trailer, the state of animation in the USA and what it was like for Lon to work at Machinima during their heyday!

Briefly: Well this came out of nowhere.

Marvel has just announced that The Walking Dead and Fury actor Jon Bernthal has been cast as Frank Castle, and that he’ll first appear in next year’s second season of Daredevil.

Marvel states that “He is a vigilante who aims to clean up New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results.” The first season of Daredevil marked some of the most graphic TV that I can recall watching, and I can’t wait to see just how far they can turn things up with Punisher.

Jeph Loeb, Marvel’s Head of Television stated that “Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences. Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”

I knew that Punisher rights reverted back to Marvel recently, but I certainly didn’t expect them to jump on the character like this. What do you think of Bernthal for role? Is there anyone else you’d rather have seen as Frank Castle?

Daredevil‘s second season hits Netflix in 2016.

Bernthal

That’s right… you’re getting it early so I can get the word out on Bob’s Kickstarter campaign! Enjoy the second Geekscape of the day!

Robert J. Peterson joins me from CC2K Online to talk about his brand new novel The Odds, currently going through a Kickstarter campaign! The Odds sounds awesome, equal parts Big Trouble in Little China, Battle Royale and… chess! We also plug our upcoming Comikaze panel with producer Michael Uslan and actor Thomas Jane! And why not use this opportunity to discuss the problems with the Punisher movies? Does Robert think that they do anything right? Also, Jonathan explains the brand new, Muslim Green Lantern and explains why he deserves to be read! And Robert says that Keanu Reeve’s ‘Side by Side’ does a great job of exploring the discussion between film and digital!

Looks like everyone was wrong about what “This Is War” was going to be all about. Oh wait…not me. Because I totally called it being ‘The Punisher’. Marvel has revealed that they would be relaunching ‘Punisher: War Zone’ with an event titled ‘Lock And Load’. Is The Punisher about to take on the Marvel universe? You’ll have to wait until the panel at Comic-Con in two weeks like the rest of us for all the details.
