Netflix’s ‘Punisher’ series finally arrived and it took no prisoners! I know that we’re a little late on this one but it doesn’t matter… because we don’t take prisoners either! Ian Kerner joins in to talk about Jon Bernthal’s take on the Punisher and how it stacks up against the competition. Nowhere is safe to hide as we ask all the questions! What does this mean for Daredevil, Luke Cage and the rest of the Netflix Marvel universe? Is this Microchip a better version than the comics? What about Ben Barnes and the rest of the cast? New characters, old characters… which pieces were adapted properly? And of course, what can you maybe expect in Punisher Season Two? Out next week is Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver,” which played at Austin’s SXSW earlier this year to high critical acclaim. We are talking 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and that’s unheard of for an action film!

The movie is about an extraordinary getaway driver (Ansel Elgort) who uses music to hyper focus on driving getaway cars in robberies. After being coerced into working for a crime boss (Kevin Spacey), he dreams of the day of escaping with his soulmate into the sunset. Part romance but mostly thrilling action, Edgar Wright creates a visually spectacular story, that pays close attention to creating compelling characters with a pounding sound track.

As music played a large role in both ‘Guardians of the Galaxy” films,  music is incorporated in a similar way from director/writer Wright in his new film “Baby Driver.” I got invited to sit down with the director and discuss his music and location choice for the heist film out June 28.

Allie Hanley: Music plays such a fabulous role in “Baby Driver.” When you originally came up with the idea of the story how did the music play into it?

Edgar Wright: As much as the music is a main motivator factor in the main character’s life, the whole idea for the movie came about because I would be listening to music and visualizing these scenes. It goes back as far as, -I wouldn’t say I’ve been working on the movie for 22 years, but I’ve been thinking about it in some sort of form because the opening track of the movie, “Bell Bottoms” by the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. When I was 21 I use to listen to that on audio cassette tape the whole time. And I use to sort of visualize a car chase. And way back then, I wouldn’t even call myself a film director but I would start to visualize this action scene, -which was a million miles away from what is actually on film 2017. So that’s crazy to me.

So really, the music was sort of the inspiration for the movie and then it developed into a movie about a character that is obsessed with music.

On setting the story’s location:

EW: Well it’s interesting to me because it was written when I first got the idea I was in London but I knew it couldn’t be in London because you don’t really get car chases in London. London is car chase proof! Mainly because of the one way system, and banks are not likely to be next to freeway systems so it just doesn’t happen. When you get robberies in London they’re usually on scooters and such.

Then I wrote it in Los Angeles and set it in Los Angeles. Then when we were actually getting ready to make the movie you start having budgetary concerns and things like tax-breaks in a city, certain places become more attractive to the producers. And initially I was a bit reluctant to that but I ended up doing a little tour of tax break cities and I was like fascinated. So me and my production manager went to Cleveland, Detroit, New Orleans, and then Atlanta.

Atlanta was where I had been to a number of times but only at a press capacity. I’d been to a studio there that was miles away from anything. So I had never really gotten to know the real place. It was in spending more time there and asking to location manager to take me to places I had never been to before and other places that people weren’t filming in that sold me on writing it for Atlanta. It’s the biggest location right now doubling for LA and New York.

It’s also a big music city and a big car city too. It’s also a main travel hub, so it’s a target for crime. So a lot of the stuff that happens in the movie genuinely happens in the city. So, all of those things came together. Once I had rewritten the script for Atlanta with the help of a friend of mine who was from there,… I rewrote it and it was cool.

Setting it in Atlanta distinguishes it a bit from many of the LA heist films like “Heat,” “Point Break,” “The Driver.” It also makes more sense for the characters to be heading west, so when they get on the road it’s like they are heading to the other ocean. Even though it wasn’t my first idea, now Atlanta is synonymous in my head.

On treading the line between incorporating nostalgia and creating something new:

EW: Essentially you start to see it through the eyes of your actors… early on in the audition process. …Music if used properly essentially can be timeless. I really didn’t want to have too many contemporary songs in the movie because I didn’t really want to date the movie the much. Everything in the movie is a little bit dates, -the cars, the IPod Classic, the fact that he doesn’t have a smart phone. I thought he would be off the grid, even when he makes that song, he uses all analog equipment. He did it tape to tape, like not ever having a computer.
You take things that are familiar and unfamiliar and nostalgic and new, and hopefully through that you create your own flavor that feels of itself, ya know. That’s the idea anyway.

Ben Affleck’s new movie, “The Accountant” is so good, it just may become the next Warner Bros. bankable franchise. Is that a surprise?

Geekdom took up arms when Ben Affleck was cast as Batman, but he proved many of us wrong. Yes, I didn’t think he had it in him and now here comes this film that immediately made me think of a Jason Bourne film. I was skeptical about “The Accountant,” and once again I have to back track and say what a surprise hit this film is.

Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck) has an affinity for numbers and uses that skill to do the accounting for some of the world’s most dangerous criminal organizations. When the Treasury Department’s Crime Enforcement Division, run by Ray King (J.K. Simmons), starts getting close Christian takes on a legitimate client; a state-of-the-art robotics company where an accounting clerk (Anna Kendrick) has discovered a discrepancy involving millions of dollars. Christian’s job is to un-cook the books but as he gets closer to the truth, people start to die.

“The Accountant” plays very much like a comic book movie without the super powers. Lead character Christian Wolff (Affleck) does exhibit some unique abilities when it comes to rationalizing figures, and can kick some serious ass thanks to his military father but its all due to mother nature and not some wonder drug. What makes it all work is the sound writing from Bill Dubuque (The Judge), who does a fine job of creating three dimensional characters as well as flushing out the sub-plots that tell the story from a variety of views. The combination makes “The Accountant” a satisfying and well-rounded action film.

Excellent casting  and solid performances from John Lithgow, Jeffrey Tambor, Jon Bernthal, Anna Kendrick, Cynthia Addai-Robinson, and JK Simmons. Each deserves a write up, including Anna Kendrick who didn’t get as much to work with as all the others but still managed to deliver a solid, and believable performance.

Director Gavin O’Connor keeps the film on task with stealthy action scenes paired with witty bits of humor that never leave a lull in the story. Smartly paced fight scenes keep the action rolling with some pretty impressive fight choreography. Again, Ben Affleck proves that he can do action, credibly and this film just amps the excitement for Justice League and a repeat of him as Batman.

The only negative was a slightly sappy ending that goes on for five minutes too long, but by the time you get there you don’t mind.

Jeph Loeb, Executive Producer and Marvel’s Head of Television, moderated the NYCC panel Marvel and Netflix and was packed with surprise appearances and announcements. Is started off with the cast of ‘Iron Fist’ making an appearance to introduce the teaser trailer.  Surprise guests included an appearance by Erik LaRay Harvey (Diamondback), Jon Bernthal (Frank Castle/The Punisher), and Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), which it was announced that she will be joining the cast of ‘The Punisher’.

The end of the very end of the panel featured the biggest surprise of the night when the main cast of the ‘The Defenders’ united on stage for the first time. Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock/Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones) , Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and from joined Finn Jones (Danny Rand).

There was one more surprise guest, Sigourney Weaver (Avatar and Aliens), and it was revealed that she would be playing the villain of the series. There was no announcement of who she would actually be portraying. There is no doubt that the Hand will be a force to reckon with, so maybe she will be a part of the clan.

Production is officially in full swing on Marvel’s ‘The Punisher’ for Netflix.

Marvel has revealed three more cast members that will be joining Jon Bernthal in the series, Ben Barnes (The Chronicles of Narnia). Barnes who is slated to play Billy Russo, Frank’s Castle’s best friend from his days in the Special Forces who runs a successful private military corporation called “Anvil;” Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“Girls”) will play Micro, a former NSA analyst whose secrets may be of great value to Frank Castle and everyone around them; and Amber Rose Revah (Indian Summers, Son of God) joins as Dinah Madani; a highly-trained sophisticated Homeland Security agent who is vexed by the Punisher.

Netflix has set Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal) as showrunner on The Punisher’, with Jim Chory and Marvel’s Jeph Loeb as executive producers.

‘The Punisher’ has already begun the early stages of production, though the series is not expected to premiere until at least 2018 after Marvel’s ‘Iron Fist’ and the crossover Defenders’ series have taken their bow.

 

I mean really who didn’t think this was gonna happen?

Jon Bernthal  absolutely slayed in his role of vengeful military veteran Frank Castle. The Punisher made his debut in season 2 as anti-hero who brought his own lethal form of justice to Hell’s Kitchen in contrast to that of the Daredevil.Writer and executive producer Steve Lightfoot (Hannibal, Casualty) will serve as show runner. Netflix and Marvel are expected to publicly announce the project later today.

When i first made my way back into comes, one of the first comics recommended to me was The Punisher Max series and The Marvel Knight series. I was blown away because i hadn’t know comics to have mature story lines at the time. I completely gobbled it up and spent many Wednesday picking up the trades and hardcovers. There so many story lines to chose from that  the possibilities are endless for the upcoming series.

These are my top three story lines that i would love to see Netflix make happen:

“Barracuda”: The Punisher (Max) Vol. 6.

Barracuda is one of the greatest foes to ever go toe to toe with Frank Castle and pushed him to his limits. Barracuda was just fucking brutal and didn’t give any fucks in what stood in his way to get to Frank. Much like Frank, this guy can take a licking and keep on ticking, nothing seems to stop him and is almost impervious to any sort of pain, if anything he thrives on it. Bringing his story line might be a bit to aggressive and violent to start off, but I can dream can’t I?

“Welcome Back, Frank”: The Punisher (Marvel Knights)

Lets right that wrong that was the The Punisher movie and lets use the source material the way Garth Ennis intend it to be. Despite her small stature, Ma Gnucchi was a force to be reckoned with. Ma was the matriarch of the Gnucci Crime Family sets off on a vendetta after Frank kills her sons as an example to let the underground world knows hes back in action.(sound familiar?) Though i have to admit that the ending of this story line was a bit crazy and probably wouldn’t make it to adaptation. I really don’t want spoil it but it involves Frank knocking out a polar bear at the Central Park Zoo.

“Homless” : The Punisher (Max)

Okay this one is completely doable for Netflix!!! Maybe not in the first season but maybe a season 3 after the Defenders movie. The Punisher is at his lowest point – homeless, penniless, gun-less. But that doesn’t him from going after Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin. At this point Kingpin is completely paranoid that someone is out to kill him and doesn’t trust anyone in his organization. So he decides outsource (how capitalist of him) a new bodyguard, Elektra.  Also involved in the story line is Kingpin’s wife Vanessa Fisk and really shows off how much of a force of nature she really is. we got a taste of it during the first season of Daredevil when she stands by her man the Kingpin. This story line written by Jason Aaron ends the Marvel Max run of The Punisher and does so in great fashion with a great twist ending.

Either way, any Punisher story line written by Garth Ennis or Jason Aaron is a can’t lose decision by the show runners. Can’t wait to see this come to fruition.

Briefly: We’ve seen glimpses of Punisher and Elektra in earlier trailers (which yes, we are still watching on repeat), but today’s teaser, entitled ‘Suiting Up’ gives us our best look at Punisher and Elektra’s costumes yet!

Bigger problems emerge when Frank Castle, a man looking for vengeance, is reborn as The Punisher, a man who takes justice into his own hands in Matt’s neighborhood. Meanwhile, Matt must balance his duty to his community as a lawyer and his dangerous life as the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen, facing a life-altering choice that forces him to truly understand what it means to be a hero.

Briefly: Wow. Wow. Wow.

10 days ago we saw an amazing first trailer for Daredevil‘s upcoming second season. The last few seconds of that video noted that today, February 25th, we’d be teased yet again with another trailer for the beyond anticipated episodes.

The new trailer has just debuted online, and it re-introduces us to a few familiar faces (and the Yazuka), and also digs into Matt and Elektra’s troubled past.

It’s essentially made up of entirely new footage, and as hard as I thought it would be to top the trailer that we saw earlier this month, I think that this one has done it.

Back in January an exciting, believable rumour churned across the internet that had Marvel, Daredevil, and The Punisher fans absolutely ecstatic. Word at the time was that a standalone Netflix The Punisher series was seemingly moments away from being greenlit.

It looks as though this was, sadly, nothing more than a rumour (damn you), as a just published excerpt with Marvel’s head of television Jeph Loeb, notes that “I think that’s something that people are speculating on, as opposed to something that’s actually happening. It’s certainly our hope that any of our characters will be embraced and that people want to see more of them.”

Now, we can certainly hope that Loeb is simply trying to downplay this whole thing, and that an official The Punisher announcement will arrive just days after Daredevil‘s second season blows all of our minds on March 18th… But for now, hope is all that we can do.

Loeb also spoke on the quick renewal of Jessica Jones, stating that “When they announced that Jessica Jones was getting a second season, every single report said, ‘It should come as a surprise to no one that Jessica Jones has received a second season order’. I’m the guy going, ‘Well, it was a surprise to me! It isn’t a given in television. The fact that we get to continue telling stories with these characters speaks a lot about the quality of the storytelling and the acting and the writing. We are telling the best stories that we can at Netflix, and they seem to be responding to it.”

Daredevil‘s second season hits Netflix in its entirety on March 18th, and we can’t freaking wait. Just how badly do you want to see a standalone The Punisher series? Be sure to sound out below!
