When I was younger, long before the horrors of adult life turned me into the cynical specimen you see before you, I used to watch Star Trek. I say “used to,” because the epic space-opera has been off the air for some time now. I was a little too young for the Original Series (TOS, for those of you in the know), and Enterprise just didn’t capture the same spirit as the other entries. I was raised on a healthy diet of Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager. I sat with my brother and father and watched the future unfold in episodic fashion. I shared the adventures of the bold and fierce Janeway, the authoritative Sisko, and the reverent Picard. That was the Star Trek I knew and loved. So when J.J. Abrams stepped in to reboot the franchise for a new generation, I was a little torn.

On the one hand, I was a huge fan of J.J.’s work in TV and film thus far. He had proven himself to be an innovative auteur, willing to take on challenging material and complex narratives. On the other hand, LOST. Seven years later, despite positive reviews for the reboot, the fans were still polarized by the new universe, and I felt squarely in the middle.

Enter Star Trek Beyond. Written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung, and directed by Fast and Furious veteran Justin Lin, this was poised to be the straw that broke the camel’s back. The trailer overloaded the senses with quick cuts, motorcycle chases, and Beastie Boys. Honestly, it was hard to even call this a Star Trek film. So, with no small amount of trepidation, I purchased my ticket and entered the theater.

I can’t say that this is a movie we will be talking about for generations to come. I won’t pretend it is a flawless script or impeccably performed. I can say, without question, that this is the most Trek-like film in the trilogy, and may be the best of the three films overall. I will be discussing a few items from the plot in depth, so let’s take a breath and together shout:

SPOILER WARNING!

After a cutesy cold open involving cat-sized aliens and a McGuffin, we find the crew of the USS Enterprise heading for some much needed R&R at the deep space station Yorktown. Kirk opens the movie with the infamous Captain’s Log. In a not-so-subtle nod to the series, Kirk laments that his first 3 years of the 5-year mission have felt “episodic,” and he doesn’t feel as focused on the mission as he used to. In many ways, his frustration and apathy mimics our own, as we see the cinema overwhelmed by sequels and reboots and copies. The entire crew seems to feel it as well, as each looks toward a future off the ship.

This brief respite on the station includes a few brief moments and scenes that were handled with subtlety and timing not often attributed to a Fast and Furious director (it should be said that Justin Lin is, in fact, a fantastic movie-maker). The infamous reveal of Sulu and his husband is handled without commentary, only a wistful smile from Kirk at seeing his crew happy. The revelation of Ambassador Spock’s passing is also done without sap or unnecessary dialogue, just a brief moment for Zachary Quinto. All-in-all, the few scenes aboard the station set up the theme of the movie very well.

I won’t bore you with a play-by-play of the action, and I honesty can say that the film is worth seeing in theaters just to witness the spectacle on screen. Justin Lin is used to telling a visually compelling story, and his work here is no different. Star Trek Beyond moves at a rapid pace, without feeling like a series of snapshots. There are a few rough patches, particularly during a late-night investigation aboard the shattered saucer section, but overall the film is coherent and exciting.

There has been a lot made recently about the difference between scenes and moments, as popularized by this brilliantly done video on Batman v Superman. Star Trek Beyond has its share of stand-alone moments, but they tend to feed the larger story in a way Mr. Snyder’s did not. Here is a spoilery example.

Spock finds out that his alternate-universe self has passed away. This scene is handled with respect and distance, allowing the audience to share is the stunned moment with the characters onscreen. Later, a wounded Spock reveals to Bones (played perfectly by the venerable Karl Urban) that he plans to quit Starfleet in order to continue Spock’s mission and increase the future of all Vulcans universe-wide. Spock breaks from his emotionless logic and tears up as he talks of the “many lifetimes” his elder self had lived. This was an emotional scene for Mr. Quinto, as the legendary Leonard Nimoy had been a close friend and mentor to the young actor when he first started out. Spock’s decision to quit his day job to focus on his species also feels earned due to the events of the series. His planet is gone, his people are scattered and limited, and the wisest among them has passed. A series of moments has added up to a powerful scene, since we as an audience have shared it with the characters.

Great movies need great heroes, and Chris Pine brings a much stronger performance to this latest iteration of Kirk. Into Darkness was blasted by critics for being too regressive from the first film. Kirk still isn’t “fit to command,” Spock doesn’t like Kirk’s methods, there is no trekking taking place. Beyond fixes many of these issues by doing what every good story must: Arriving late and leaving early. What I mean by this is that we open the movie in the middle of the adventure. This isn’t Day 1, Year 1 of the journey into the beyond. This is year 3, and the crew is exhausted. Kirk has not only accepted the responsibilty of command, but he is a revered and beloved leader. Uhura puts her life in danger to protect her captain without a moment’s hesitation. Bones and Spock act like war-weary friends rather than strangers. Scotty acts with earned authority when repairing the ship. By delivering a lived-in universe instead of one still smelling of shrink-wrap, the writer allows the hero to have a more involved arc.

Back to Kirk, we no longer see the petulant man-child from the first movie. Kirk may throw the odd glance toward an attractive member of the opposite sex (although nothing akin to the cringe-inducing scene with Alice Eve from Into Darkness), but he is by a large a different man than the one we’ve met before. In fact, I would say he feels more like the Kirk of TOS. More than that, he bears the resilience and attitude of a Starfleet officer. He wants to settle problems with wit rather than violence. A great example is shortly into Act Two. Kirk realizes that his crew was duped by an alien refugee into a trap, and he confronts the alien with his phaser in hand. The female admits her role and puts up no defense. A lazy screenwriter, and one without thought of the series, would be likely had Kirk shoot her down to demonstrate his extreme emotional state. That would have been a grave mistake, and Pegg and Jung avoid it deftly. Instead, Kirk uses the alien to suss out details of the greater plot against his crew and the Federation as a whole.

Heroes need villains, and the movie brings in a powerhouse to portray the big bad. Idris Elba, best known for being amazing (let this man be James Bond already), plays the sinister Krall. His arc is a very slow burn, which is unfortunate because it is a pretty solid turn overall. Elba is simply epic in his delivery and presence, even under layers of makeup. His attitude is important as well, as it demonstrates one of the main issues Trek fans have had with the reboot: The militarization of the Federation (Scotty even says as much in Into Darkness). Krall believes that might makes right, and that the Federation’s unity of species and belief in diplomacy is a great weakness. In a refreshing turn, Kirk becomes the voice of reason, espousing the beliefs of the Federation as the correct course for humanity and the universe as a whole.

For all the hardcore haters out there, I’m sure you will find your flaws within the film. The use of “classical” tunes by the Beastie Boys is worthy of an eye-roll, female characters still mostly act as filler, and the end space battle is hilariously simple given the shellacking the Enterprise took in Act One. Still, there is a heart of charm in this movie that the previous film sorely lacked. There is a sense of wonder, of joy in exploration, that hearkens back to the theme and tone of the original.

As a caveat to my comment about female characters, I must bring up Jaylah, played wonderfully by Sofia Boutella. Despite both her English and attitude coming from late 90’s hip hop, Jaylah is a wonderful addition to the roster and one of the best parts of the movie. She is fiercely independent, innovative, and determined in her goal to leave the forsaken planet. Her story lacks a defined third act, but she more than delivers in the film. She is never reduced to a mere sexual object, which is a huge step for the new franchise (again, Alice Eve, what the hell were they thinking?). More than just not being objectified, Jaylah is integral in moving the plot forward. She takes action, fights her own battles, and makes decisions based on her self-interest rather than that of the crew. She has agency and direction, and can seriously kick ass.

Star Trek Beyond released in the wake of the tragic loss of Anton Yelchin, the young and talented actor behind Chekchov. In the final scenes of the film, the crew of the Enterprise get together to celebrate Kirk’s birthday. Kirk delivers an iconic toast “to absent friends,” and for a brief moment the camera cuts to Anton raising his glass. The shot lingers just a beat, but editing choice is clear. This is paired with a “For Anton” during the end credits. It is another soft-handed approach to a sensitive topic, and feels like the right choice given the circumstances. It is not as direct as the Blue Angel’s motif done in the latest Fast and Furious film, but the implication is just as obvious and, at least for me, appreciated.

Simon Pegg and Doug Jung put together a strong and well-paced Star Trek adventure. The themes, arcs, and actions in the story call to mind the films of the Original Series. There is a reverence and love in each scene that was absent previously, and its return marks a change for the better. Will you find things you don’t like? Most definitely. This is not a perfect film by any stretch. There are plot holes, dropped story lines, and downright bad choices made for the sake of moving the plot forward. Overall, however, this is an enjoyable and moving film for the franchise. If this turns out to the be the last in the series, I think it ends on a high note. In an age of cynicism and pessimism, Star Trek Beyond boldly goes in a direction of hope.

GRADE: 3.5 / 5

If enjoy Star Trek, or sci-fi of any kind, you’ll probably enjoy my book.  You can also read more of my scribblings on my site.

This week on Monday Music we have a nice treat for all the geeks out there. Disney has teamed up with record producer Rick Rubin to create a Star Wars inspired compilation album, and what we have seen so far is outstanding.

Head Space features a trove of well known electronic music producers. Most of you will recognize artists like Flying Lotus and Röyksopp right off the bat, but I can tell you that the entire group of people involved are some of the best. Head Space get’s inspiration and elements from all of the Star Wars films. C-3PO’s Plights features samples of the droid lamenting existence, as well as blaster shots from the movies. Baauer’s Cantina Boys gets really dirty with some classic samples you will immediately recognize.

What is very interesting to note is the Rick Rubin/A-Trak Re-Work of the song Jabba Flow from The Force Awakens. The original artist, Shag Kava, is actually J.J. Abrams and Lin-Manuel Miranda!

You will not be disappointed with this release. Check out the track list below.

1. C-3P0’s Plight – Kaskade

2. Help Me! – GTA

3. Force – TroyBoi

4. Cantina Boys – Baauer

5. Jabba Flow: Rick Rubin Re-Work (feat. A-Trak) – Shag Kava

6. R2 Knows (feat. Barry Drift) – Claude VonStroke

Briefly: I feel very envious of you US-based readers right now.

As a Canadian, there’ll be no ahem-legitimate way for me to watch Hulu’s upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s 11.22.63, but it looks so damned cool I may just have to make the move stateside to see it (or, you know, use a VPN).

After teasing the series for some time now, Hulu has just debuted the first official trailer for the series.

11.22.63 is a thriller in which high school English teacher Jake Epping (James Franco) travels back in time to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy — but his mission is threatened by Lee Harvey Oswald, falling in love and the past itself, which doesn’t want to be changed.

The series also stars Chris Cooper, Josh Duhamel, T.R. Knight, Cherry Jones, Sarah Gadon, Lucy Fry, George MacKay and Daniel Webber.

Fittingly, 11.22.63 will debut on President’s Day, Feb. 15, 2016, on Hulu.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to this enticing series!

This just aired moments ago during the Giants vs. Eagles game (Come on, Big Blue, WTF are you guys doing?), but it’s here now for your viewing pleasure. Meanwhile, did you get your tickets for The Force Awakens? Because I didn’t, and I’m resigning myself to seeing it the second weekend. Can’t win them all.

I’ve watched the first trailers ad nauseam and this was like 90% new footage so I’ll be happily watching this on loop until December 18. Or December 25, now. Oh God, will I actually see it on Christmas?

Quick thoughts: So it’s clear that Kylo Ren is some kind of Ren pack leader. It was unknown where in the hierarchy he was, but now it looks like he’s got some command. (We all kind of just assumed, didn’t we?)

Also, I’m fascinated how the adventures of Luke, Han, and Leia are apparently legend, not history. That’s going to be verrrry interesting to see play out. I always imagined those three go on to become war heroes (Remember, all the post-trilogy EU canon was wiped clean by Disney). That they become myth is both depressing and exciting.

Yeah, of course I’m excited. Are you too? Where are all the Star Trek fans?

There are exactly 60 days left until Star Wars: The Force Awakens awakens us, forcefully. And the promotion is ramping up hardcore, but you’d be surprised to realize there hasn’t been an “official poster” or an actual trailer quite yet. But here we are, with the official Force Awakens movie poster.

It’s everything you expect Star Wars to be, but with some neat surprises.

https://twitter.com/starwars/status/655775390691033089/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

For one, I’m surprised at how much prominence Daisy Ridley has on the poster. Not that I doubted her place as a lead, but I thought that would have been given to, say, Boyega or hell Harrison Ford. It’s really great that Star Wars has another prominent female lead in its mythology. I hope there will be more!

The more I look at the poster the more I get excited, as if I weren’t already. The red/blue contrast really pops. I kind of like this better than the Dru Struzan variant from D23, which is sacrilege!

A new trailer is supposed to premiere tomorrow night during ESPN’s Monday Night Football. You mean it won’t air during Monday Night WWE RAW?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens premieres December 18th.

Check out the newest TV spot for The Force Awakens

Wow. Just wow. From the moment the teaser trailer for HBO’s 2016 show Westworld started I was hooked. No hyperbole here folks, I’m fucking sold.

The show stars Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, Jeffrey Wright, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Rodrigo Santoro, Shannon Woodward, Ingrid Bolsø Berdal, Ben Barnes, Jimmi Simpson, Clifton Collins, Jr., Simon Quarterman and Angela Sarafyan.

Westworld is based off of the 1973 film of the same name, which just so happens to be Michael Crichtons first feature film.

HBO says their newest show is

A dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin.

Like I said up top there, I was instantly sold. The vibe I got right away really checked all my boxes and I cannot wait for this show to start.

Westworld airs on HBO sometime in 2016. BUT, you can get a first look at it TONIGHT just before the season two finale of True Detective.

This week film journalism arguably became (one of, let’s not get carried away) the most important subject in the national conversation. It has been a hell of a week, from the surreal to the maddening, and it’s hard to look at any movie news without getting a bit frustrated at the state of affairs. But Deadline just reported something that has made my heart sing: Justin Lin, currently directing True Detective season two but renowned for every Fast & Furious film since Tokyo Drift will helm  Star Trek 3.

Almost everything about this is awesome.

From Deadline:

He is available because he was going to direct the sequel to The Bourne Legacy spinoff with Jeremy Renner, but that film got postponed when Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass agreed to do another installment of The Bourne Identity, which Universal wants to come first. Lin was courted to return to the Fast & Furious franchise to do a multi-part finale, but I am not sure whether that will be in the cards in light of the Star Trek job. Orci remains a producer on the Star Trek film.

Where do I begin with my excitement? I love the Fast & Furious movies. It’s a wildly misunderstood series, mistaken for something to leave on the TV while you do yard work or chores. But it’s not! It is, without pretense, the most fun and ever-changing blockbuster franchise that warps your perception of what these films are all about with each installment. The action pieces are brilliantly put-together, and the central characters ooze charm. You want to be invited to their barbecues.

But what of Lin? Thought to be a dying series after 2 Fast 2 Furious, Lin transformed the Fast movies starting with Tokyo Drift, also a totally misunderstood movie. It comes off as the most direct-to-DVD of the entire franchise, but it’s a wonderful film and a door to a whole other world that exists in the crazy Fast universe. Had Lin stopped at Tokyo Drift his selection to direct Star Trek 3 would still be in question, even I would admit. But it was the crazy-awesome Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 that legitimizes Lin as the guy to do Star Trek 3. Next to The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, both Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 are expert demonstrations on ensemble action blockbusters. How do you make a compelling action movie with a wide cast of characters? If you’re an aspiring creative, take notes and watch the last two Fast movies. How Lin managed to make goofs driving willy-nilly compelling and visceral is outstanding.

Lastly, on the subject of ethnicity. It’s incredible, at least to me, that the Fast series, one of Hollywood’s leading franchises, has largely been directed by people of color. Roberto Orci is Latino, but without a proven track record as director it was hard to get excited for him as a creative. Lin, one of the top contenders of blockbuster filmmaking, has without a doubt proved he can do a film as massive as Star Trek, and his choosing honors Star Trek and sci-fi in general from their own lessons in progressive social politics. On that note, I urge you to watch Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow, an excellent film that can kickstart any conversation about Asian-Americans and the bullshit “model minority.”

Even if that’s not your jive, come on, the dude who made the best episode of Community is now doing Star Trek. Get hyped.

Deadline has just reported that everybody’s favorite Hollywood producer Roberto Orci (Get it? Because he isn’t?) is no longer directing the third installment of the current Star Trek film franchise. Furthermore, everyone’s favorite director Edgar Wright (Not sarcasm) is at the top of a short list to take over.

Trek fans will be partying pretty hard tonight. You know, more than usual.

It has been an interesting year for Orci. After splitting up with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman, Orci was assigned director of Star Trek and producer of 2016’s Power Rangers. We are less than a month away from the New Year and Orci is out of both projects. He and Kurtzman are still working together on TV with Sleepy Hollow, however.

Star Trek 3 would have been Orci’s first time directing a film, of any kind. Although he’s been everywhere in Hollywood, directing he has never done. Not even a commercial or a music video, and earlier this year he was given the keys to dad’s sports car. Not to discount that amazing opportunity, I would fight tooth and nail to defend that decision if it were given to me. But as the circumstances of Orci’s departure are unknown, one can only speculate what caused Paramount (or anyone calling the shots) to blink.

Edgar Wright’s involvement is still up in the air, but can we take a moment to imagine how banging of a job he could do? Forget that Simon Pegg is a part of the Enterprise and their director/actor relationship in a major film would be glorious to see. No, just remember who Edgar Wright is. His visual language. Now put that in space. This is a total 180 from how I felt about Star Trek 3 before today.

However, Roberto Orci will stay on as producer and maintain some writing credit.

UPDATE: Badass Digest is saying Orci was out because of the script.

From Badass Digest:

[UPDATE: I’ve been in touch with some folks and it seems like the script was one of the problem factors. Paramount shut the production down last month, sending home all the design people while they battled over the direction of the screenplay. I imagine all this stuff is gone now]

There is an influx of new Star Wars VII information today! J.J. Abrams loves playing his usual mystery box secrets and giggling like a school girl while we itch to know more. We can wildly speculate every little inch of this film, but when we get something it feels like we can take off for the rest of the day. First, some new costumes.

While for legal reasons we cannot reproduce the images below, you can click on over to UPROXX to see them yourself. There’s also a few leaked images of what the new Stormtroopers look like, and they look kinda Kubrick. Han is dressed like an older, grizzled Malcolm Reynolds of sorts, which just that space cowboy trope full circle, don’t it? His other costume, made for colder temperatures, is a throwback to his duds from Empire Strikes Back. The Stormtroopers, meanwhile, evoke a sort of 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe. Their helmets remind me of the hotel ship from the film after the gigantic time jump. Interesting that one of the most influential pieces of sci-fi and pop culture is evoking the other most influential piece of sci-fi and pop culture ever. A lot of these visual references could just be total coincidence, after all how much can you really invent “space soldier” and “space cowboy”?

Now, the bad guys. Abrams posted the note below, thanking everyone for the cool $5 million donated for A Force For Change. Way to go, good people! Thing is, check out that hand holding the note. The cyborg one. Who the hell is that? Did they give a gritty edge to C-3PO?

jj-abrams-droid-hand__span

According to Latino Review, the hand may belong to the Inquisitors, villains previously of the extended universe. This might hurt for you to hear, but anything relating to the extended universe and I start getting bored, so I’ll let the good source explain to you the Inquisitors.

The Inquisitors are the villains of Star Wars: Episode VII and the name of the main villain in Star Wars: Rebels. They seem to be loosly based on the now-deleted Expanded Universe Inquistors (Click here for that background) mixed with the hardended Sith look of Rebels’ villain. The Inquisitors are defenders of the Sith Order and they’ve been around for a long time. Just how long is what turns Episode VII’s story on it’s head.

Cool, I guess.

Hey. What’s this?

GET OUT NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT THE BIG SPOILER.

Ok?

Onward.

When our hero(es) find Luke and the Inquisitors are revealed, Luke’s explanation on the history of this order is going to trigger a flashback to explain that the Inquisitors have been tied into the Sith all along.

Remember when we broke Billie Lourd’s casting (Lourd is the biological daughter of Carrie Fisher)? That’s not so she can play a Solo kid, it’s so she can play a much younger Princess Leia than we’ve ever seen before in this flashback…

But, a young Princess Leia is not all this flashback reveals…

The Inquisitors will be seen serving Darth Vader in flashback.

Yes, Darth Vader will be on screen, briefly, in Star Wars: Episode VIIWe’re not done with the dark prince of the Sith quite yet.

UH. COOL.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be released December 18, 2015.

Briefly: The already expansive cast of J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII has just added two more.

Following the addition of 12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie a few weeks back, Disney has announced that newcomers Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen have joined the project in unspecified roles.

Here’s the announcement:

At the end of last year Lucasfilm and Disney invited all young aspiring actors to attend an open casting call for roles in J.J Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII. The casting calls spanned 11 cities across the US and UK and over 37,000 hopefuls attended, with a further 30,000 submitting applications online.

Having hunted high and low for young and undiscovered talent, the filmmakers are delighted to announce that two actors from the open call call have been cast.

Crystal Clarke is an American actress studying in Glasgow, UK, who has both stage and screen acting experience and is soon to be seen in her first feature,The Moon and the Sun (to be released in 2015). British actor Pip Andersen is a skilled practitioner of parkour, a discipline that involves propelling oneself through any given environment with incredible grace and agility. Pip recently demonstrated this remarkable skill in a Spider-Man ad for Sony.

“The Star Wars universe has always been about discovering and nurturing young talent and in casting Episode VII we wanted to remain absolutely faithful to this tradition. We are delighted that so many travelled to see us at the open casting calls and that we have been able to make Crystal and Pip a part of the film,” said producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Meanwhile, principal photography continues at Pinewood Studios in London after wrapping on location in Abu Dhabi in May.

In August, the team will take a brief two-week hiatus while adjustments to the current production schedule are made as actor Harrison Ford recovers from a leg injury. Harrison is doing well and is looking forward to returning to the set soon. Shooting remains on track to wrap in the fall with the film scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

Are you looking forward to the film? What do you think of the new additions? Sound out below!

Briefly: This is some very cool news.

Deadline has learned that Looper, Brick (if you haven’t seen this, definitely, definitely look into it), and Breaking Bad‘s Ozymandias director Rian Johnson has been tapped to write and direct both Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX.

So now we have Abrams on Episode VIIGodzilla director Gareth Edwards on one of the standalone films, Chronicles Josh Trank on another, and Johnson on Episode VIII and IX. That’s some pretty stellar talent. Are you excited yet?

Johnson hasn’t officially commented on the news, but did tweet out the following hilarious and fitting video:

http://youtu.be/o9iP2WEvq2s

Were you a Looper fan? Are you looking forward to the new trilogy? Sound out below!

Briefly: Star Wars: Episode VII set photos have been leaking all over the place (we haven’t been posting them out of respect to the production). Disney and most everyone involved in the production are likely irate at this fact, and today director J.J. Abrams tweeted out a fantastic, tongue-in-cheek response to the culprit(s):

Fans will notice that the note is sitting on top of the Holochess board from the Millennium Falcon, which we saw being built in those photos a couple days back.

Star Wars: Episode VII stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker, Lupita Nyong’o, and Gwendoline Christie, and will hit theatres on December 18th, 2015.

Briefly: The already expansive cast of J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII has just added two more.

The cast was lacking in female stars, but Disney has announced that Academy Award winner and 12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie have joined the project in unspecified roles.

“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”

Briefly: Ah, it’s great to see some practical effects here.

The official Star Wars YouTube channel has just debuted the first video from the set of Episode VII, and it features something very cool in the background.

The video announces a contest that will give a fan a spot in the film, and also to promote awareness for the Star Wars UNICEF campaign. During the video, a cute looking alien walks through the background, and it’s a great first look at what Abrams and crew are up to right now in Abu Dhabi.

Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Briefly: I wasn’t expecting to hear any casting news until May 4th (I wonder what’s in store for us that day), but Disney has just revealed the cast of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII!

Here’s the announcement, straight from StarWars.com:

The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker in the new film.

Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.

Of course, we don’t know who’s playing who (aside from the original cast, of course), or even what characters we’ll see in the film, but in any case, it’s hard not to get excited.

Take a look at the first photo of the cast below, and let us know what you think of the news!

Fox recently announced a slate of shows renewed (and cancelled) for next season. There were reasons for celebrations (Brooklyn 99, New Girl), reasons for sorrow (Raising Hope), and reasons to agonize as Fox’s silence over the fate of others left us waiting.

Almost Human deserves a second season. It’s done with its world-building, the characters are set, the twisty through-plot is just about to make sense (or pay-off, or be forgotten in favor of a new, better one, maybe?) and it’s ideally placed to have strong, fan-rific, possibly-the-best-show-(think-Fringe)-you-should-be-watching second season.

And we’re not the only ones, the website Save That Show shows a whopping 88% of people who take the poll support saving Almost Human (yes, we’re aware that the sample population of this poll is probably slanted. Yay statistics!)

Karl Urban as Det. Kennex and Michael Ealy as Dorian in Fox's Almost Human.
Karl Urban as Det. Kennex and Michael Ealy as Dorian in Fox’s Almost Human.

So without further ado, here are our Top Ten Reasons to Renew Almost Human:

1.Firefly. That’s right, we said it. Fox Executives still owe us for cancelling Firefly, and we are calling in that debtbecause we are not afraid to play that card, and we will probably play it again. It is the television equivalent of that thing you said that one time to your brother that comes up every Thanksgiving, Christmas and occasional birthdays.

2. It’s a good show. It’s a really, really, really good show. It’s not the most innovative when it comes to plots (it’s still a procedural cop show) but the world is interesting, the characters are invested and it’s just getting better. It got second place in TV.com’s Best of 2013, and was in the top 5 Best Sci-Fi/Superhero Series 2013.

3. The wall! What’s behind the wall? Who lives out there? Why is there a wall?? The series jumped up a notch when it introduced that particular element and it needs to be explained!

4.The show combines elements of Asimov’s robotics, fringe science, and a tech-noir grit with laugh-out-loud humor. Its nods to the films, books and other works that went before it—and where Almost Human clearly draws inspiration from—are subtle and usually done with tongue-placed-firmly-in-cheek.

Almost Human promo picture. Courtesy of Fox.
Almost Human promo picture. Courtesy of Fox.

5. Ealy and Urban—who play mismatched partners Dorian and Kennex—have an undeniable chemistry and their on-screen friendship and banter contributes a great deal to what makes the show so good. Also, we would watch Dorian and Kennex banter in the car anywhere. It should be a web series. Traveling in Cars with Kennex…

6.It’s good sci-fi. It’s smart sci-fi. It offers an intriguing look at our future, with a mixture of both cynicism and hope in terms of where humanity might find itself. And good, smart sci-fi—where the science isn’t just ’magic’—is hard to find. Especially on network TV.

7.While the two leads are men, the show’s two supporting roles, Captain Maldonado and Detective Valerie Stahl (played by Lili Tayler and Minka Kelly, respectively) are strong, effective, commanding women. And those are even rarer on network TV than good sci-fi.

8.Almost every great show had a rough first season. Especially world-building shows, where so much has to be built up before the series can really take off.  Almost Human’s first season wasn’t that rough (ok, ok, the through-plot with the Syndicate-whatever wasn’t great…) and it is poised to really have a phenomenal second (and more!) season.

9. Firefly. Yup, twice in one list.

10. It consistently got better with every episode, and a second season would probably continue the trend, if the final six episodes are any indication. AND Season One finished up with any number of exciting plot points and new characters just waiting for more exploration.

‘Ok, ok,’ you’re saying. ‘You had us at Firefly. But what can we do?’

Amazingly enough, letter writing campaigns work. You can write directly to Mr. Kevin Reilly, FOX Broadcasting Co, 10201 W. Pico Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90035. Or, go to Fox and watch it.  You can follow the fan campaign here, or sign this petition here.

Also a ‘save Almost Human’ google search can point you in other directions.

You can catch up with Almost Human at Hulu.com.

What do you guys think? Should we save this show?

Briefly: A few weeks back, a mysterious, intriguing video appeared on Bad Robot’s official YouTube channel. The internet was ripe with speculation on whether Stranger teased a new, unannounced film or television series. As it turns out, it’s neither.

Bad Robot has debuted a new trailer for the project, which is a book developed by JJ Abrams and written by Doug Dorst, simply titled S. EW was able to take a look at the novel, and describes it as follows:

S. is basically about the relationship between a grad student named Eric and a college senior named Jennifer. They trade notes in the margins of a (fictional) 1949 novel by a mysterious author named V.M. Straka. S. contains the novel within the novel; copious handwritten notes between Jennifer and Eric (“a conversation that plunges them into the unknown,” according to the book jacket); and dozens of pieces of ephemera between the pages like newspaper clippings and a napkin with a map drawn on it.

S. sounds insanely interesting, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. The book releases on October 29. Take a look at the new teaser below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up!

Briefly: Whatever this project is, I’m already insanely intrigued.

Bad Robot today debuted a trailer for a mysterious new project titled Stranger. It’s unknown whether the video teases an upcoming film or television project for the studio (which has a number of each currently in the works), but Stranger doesn’t appear connected to anything that Bad Robot has announced so far.

The video clocks in at just over a minute long, so I won’t spoil anything that it contains. Take a look at the impressive teaser below, and let us know what you think! We’ll be sure to share more details as they’re announced!

Yesterday, Paramount released seven new character posters for the highly anticipated release of Star Trek Into Darkness. Most of the Enterprise crew was present, but both Scotty and Chekov were noticeably absent from the images. Fans of the two were beginning to wonder what would come of the characters, as neither have been prominently featured during the film’s ongoing marketing campaign.

Fans are in luck. Paramount today released two new posters, spotlighting our missing crew members. Check them out below, and let us know what you think! Star Trek Into Darkness hits theatres on May 17th!

Wow. This trailer is flat out amazing.

Paramount has just debuted a new (and final) theatrical trailer for JJ Abrams wildly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness. The preview doesn’t feature much new footage, but the simple way that everything is cut together makes for an emotional 2.5 minutes. It’s goosebump inducing, really.

Star Trek Into Darkness flies into theatres (and our hearts) on May 17th.

This past weekend, Latino-Review’s resident super movie scooper El Mayimbe confirmed for many what has been speculated ever since last Fall, that Harrison Ford will return to the role of Han Solo in Star Wars Episode VII. This one piece of information confirms a lot of things about what to expect from the next trilogy, mostly that these sequels will take place relatively close in time to where we left things off in Return of the Jedi. With the casting of Ford, this means that this film will likely take place only decades later, not a hundred or even a thousand years from where we left off storywise, as has been speculated by some. This makes the guessing game a whole lot easier about which elements of the classic Star Wars films we will see going forward. The focus of these new films is almost certainly going to be on the children of Han, Leia and Luke, with the classic trilogy characters taking a backseat to the new kids. The classic trilogy trio will likely be seen in much smaller roles, kind of in a “passing the torch” kind of way. While nothing is for certain, based on what we do know, here are my educated guesses as to who and what we will see in Episode VII, as well as what we most certainly won’t see.

Luke Skywalker/Mark Hamill

If there is any one single character from the classic films that is almost a virtual shoo-in for a return, it’ll be Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. There is very little we know about whatever George Lucas outline they are said to be using for Episodes VII-IX, but everything we do know has come out in bits and pieces over the years from interviews with Hamill, who always said that Lucas promised him a role similar to what Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan had in the original film, as the older Jedi mentor figure. And now that we know that Han Solo is a character in this movie, there is almost no chance that Luke won’t be back as well. In a nice bit of cosmic happenstance, Hamill will be the exact same age in 2015 that Sir Alec Guinness was when he played Obi-Wan in 1977.

Chances For Coming Back – 10/10

Princess Leia/Carrie Fisher

When I first heard the announcement of Episodes VII-IX, my honest to goodness thought was that of all the human characters in the original trilogy, we would probably only see Luke return. But since that time, not only has Harrison Ford been all but confirmed, but it has been quickly revealed that Lucas informed both actors Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher of the new episodes as early as last August. Why tell Fisher if he didn’t want her involvement as well? And now that her man Han Solo is confirmed to return? It is pretty close to a safe bet she’ll be back too. I don’t expect Leia to have a huge role here, we will probably see her as the President of the New Republic or something similar, not to mention as a mother figure to whomever the main character (or characters) probably will be.

Instead of using make up and digital trickery to try to de-age her, I think the opposite action needs to be taken; age her UP, make her a cross between Margaret Thatcher and Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter series. The only reason I give Leia  a slightly lesser chance of returning is that I could see Carrie Fisher, someone known to be somewhat neurotic about her physical appearance (if you’ve ever watched her one-woman shows, you know what I mean) choosing to leave her Leia Legacy behind as gold-bikinied hottie that millions of fanboys got their first erections to, and leave it at that.

The image of Carrie Fisher on the right is one of her more flattering recent pics. Instead of trying to make her look younger through lipo, botox and who knows what else, my suggestion is age her up.

Chances For Returning- 9/10

Chewbacca/Peter Mayhew

Another iconic character who was sorely missed in episodes I-II. We all know actor Peter Mayhew has already stated he is down to return and play Chewie, but frankly, even if he doesn’t, another 7 foot huge actor could fill the part and almost no one would know better (sorry Peter.) Besides, where Han goes, Chewie goes. Everyone knows that.

Chances for Returning: 10/10

R2-D2 and C-3PO/Kenny Baker & Anthony Daniels

And here are the last of what I’d say are the “shoo-ins” to come back. Lucas has long stated that the droids are the connective thread through all the trilogies, and we know that where Master Luke goes, so do his faithful droids. I guess the only question is, will either of the original actors inside the metal shells come back? Kenny Baker was barely needed in the prequels, as technology improved greatly by the time shooting the newer movies began. That is even more true today. And Anthony Daniels is currently in his late 60’s. Will he still want to get into a hot metal suit on a set for hours at this point? Even if he doesn’t, and they find another actor to fill the suit, it is pretty much a guarantee that Daniels will at least provide the voice of Threepio for as long as he’s still alive and kicking.

Chances for Returning: 10/10

Lando Calrissian/Billy Dee Williams

Ok, here is where things get a wee bit murkier. Lando could come back, but at this point I think he would just be brought back pretty much just to be there. This movie isn’t going to focus on the old guys, and having four old actors all essentially in mentor roles is kind of pushing it. He’s not really part of the Skywalker family per se, I’m just not sure what role he’d really have to play at this point in the story. But if all the original important characters come back, and they leave the only ethnic character from the classic series out, Disney could get a lot of crap for that decision. Of course, if they include an all new African-American character, well, then that solves that particular  problem, and they don’t suddenly have to find a role for Grandpa Lando.

Chances for Coming Back: 6/10

The Emperor/Ian McDiarmid

The biggest question on everyone’s mind, at least concerning the story of this new trilogy, is just who the hell is the villain going to be? If Episodes VII-IX are meant to round out the saga as started in the Episodes I-VI, then it would figure they would continue to use the same villain: Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious. In creating the original saga, George Lucas has had no problem borrowing liberally from sources as varied as King Arthur legends, old westerns, World War II history and lots more. He once stated that Obi-Wan in Episode IV was based in part on Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings, and seeing as how both “died” in the first chapters of their respective trilogies, only to come back more powerful than before later on, you can see the connection. So if Gandalf is Obi-Wan, could the Emperor be maybe… Sauron?

palpatine

Go with me here; what if after decades of a hard-won peace, in a distant part of the realm (or the galaxy in this case) the disembodied spirit of Palpatine grows more powerful, and begins to have his minions build an army. This allows for for a return of familiar Star Wars iconography, like Imperial Star Destroyers and Storm Troopers, but with a modern twist–recognizable but slightly redesigned and improved. This storyline is similar to Dark Horse Comics’ Dark Empire series, but in that particular set of stories the Emperor came back as a clone, and I don’t see them going that way here. Instead, I see him as a disembodied presence, and probably just his voice (voiced of course still by the great Ian McDiarmid) who might not even take physical form, much like Sauron in Lord of the Rings. The goal of this trilogy might be for the grandchild (or grandchildren) of Anakin Skywalker to prevent the return of the Sith, which would then undo Anakin’s fulfillment of his destiny. Still, Abrams might want a whole new villain for his version of Star Wars, which is why I don’t think the return of the Sith is anywhere near a done deal yet.

Chances for Returning: 5/10

Obi-Wan Kenobi/Ewan McGregor

Say what you will about the prequel trilogy, even the most ardent prequel hater will grudgingly admit that Ewan McGregor nailed the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Add a little old age make-up, some translucent blow glow, and he can appear in a cameo communing with Luke from beyond the grave. Ewan McGregor has recently said he’d be down for any return to the Star Wars saga, and having grown up with the classic films, he would probably love to be in a movie with the original cast.

obi-wan2

Chances for Returning: 7/10

Yoda/Frank Oz

Everything I just said about Obi-Wan applies to Yoda as well. If I were Disney, I’d keep the Yoda/Obi-Wan cameos under wraps as much as possible, leave it as a surprise for audiences. Of course, in this age of online scoops, good luck keeping that from being spoiled if it does end up happening.

Yoda

Chances for Returning: 7/10

Anakin Skywalker/Hayden Christensen

All right, This might piss off fanboys the world over, but if ghostly Ben and Yoda come back, that implies Anakin would too probably. If Palpatine is indeed the villain again, then Anakin’s chances double for a return appearance, as who has better insight into Palpy but his former apprentice? A lot of fans loathe Hayden Christensen, but under the direction of JJ Abrams, I could see him giving a decent performance, much like he did in Shattered Glass. Besides, it would probably just be a cameo anyway, so I wouldn’t sweat it too much.

Chances for Returning: 6/10

Boba Fett/Temuera Morrison (Or Whoever)

Although loved by fanboys the world over, I can’t see how they would explain Boba being around some thirty years after movie going audiences last saw him as being “slowly digested over a thousand years” in the Sarlaac Pit at the start of Return of the Jedi. Yes, I am aware that various comics and novels have explained how Boba survived that little indiginity, but most casual moviegoers have not read any of those, and I can’t see JJ Abrams spending valuable screen time explaining how Boba managed to still be alive and kicking decades later. Boba might get his own solo spin-off movie set during the classic trilogy (I think this more than likely) but don’t expect him in Episode VII. Still, he is very popular,  so anything is possible. I won’t go as far as ruling it out completely.

Chances For Returning: 2/10

Jar-Jar Binks/Ahmed Best

Relax, geeks. This will never happen. Everyone knows Jar-Jar is the most hated character in all of sci-fi, symbolic of everything wrong with the prequel trilogy. You might see cute little in jokes, like a gravestone with his head on it, or something similar, but yeah…Disney won’t allow for Jar-Jar in this new trilogy, so everyone go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief.

Locations/Planets

The Star Wars galaxy is a vast one, made up of thousands and thousands of planets, and I think this is something JJ Abrams will want to explore more. I don’t believe we will be visiting many already seen worlds from the original saga, and they will be mostly creating whole new ones instead. I can’t forsee a reason to return to planets like Hoth, Dagobah, Bespin, or almost any of the others for any reason other than viewers already know them. There are two big exceptions to this rule though, and they are the following:

Tatooine

While Tatooine is the planet said to be the farthest from the bright center of the universe, and essentially the armpit of the galaxy, it is the emotional home planet of the Star Wars saga, appearing in five of the six films. I’m not sure how it will factor in, but at some point in Episode VII-IX, count on visiting Tatooine, maybe as the home of hermit Jedi Master Luke Skywalker.

tatooine

Coruscant

The capital world of the Republic, then the Empire, and then presumably the New Republic as well. It was originally meant to appear in Return of the Jedi, although using a different name. If Tatooine is the Star Wars galaxy’s version of a no-name small town, then Coruscant is New York City. While the prequel movies spent way too much time in this one location, the capital world is too important to to be ignored, and is bound to make at least an appearance at some point in these new movies.

EAW_20100202_00094404

Chances of Seeing Both Planets: 8/10

Starships

The Millennium Falcon

One very important ingredient missing in the prequel trilogy was the lack of a central starship to serve as de-facto home for the protagonists, which is what the Millennium Falcon was to the core group of characters in the classic trilogy. The Millennium Falcon is the most beloved spaceship in sci-fi history, right next to the starship Enterprise; there is almost no way it isn’t making a comeback this time. I don’t expect Han to be piloting the ship anymore though, I expect him to have given the old girl to one of his kids…although I could see Chewie remaining as co-pilot to his “niece” or “nephew.” One thing is for sure though, expect to see the return of the Falcon, and expect it to still not work half the time.

star-wars-fans-build-millennium-falcon-slice

X-Wings, Y-Wings, Etc.

If you look at the starships in the original trilogy, the Imperial armada all have a sparse, uniform look with little in the way of deviation; Star Destroyers for example are all angular and stark white and colorless. The Rebels on the other hand are made up of various cultures all coming together, and therefore have a more haphazard and varied look (all the Rebel fleet scenes in Empire and Jedi look like ships that all came from different worlds.) Now that the Rebels have very likely become the New Republic (or something similar) they have to look more uniform, but should still look more organic and not too much like the former Empire’s ships. There should be X-Wings, Y-Wings and the like, because everyone loves those designs, but everything should look a little more uniform and polished, as this isn’t a rag tag band anymore, they are the establishment.

Last, but certainly not least, John Williams

41471167

At first, I would have thought that John Williams would have chosen to retire from Star Wars along with George Lucas, but according to recent reports, he is seemingly down for a return. Star Wars and Williams go together like peanut butter and jelly, so if he wants to come back, Disney will move heaven and Earth to make that happen. In any case, the next few months and years will prove whether or not my guesses have any degree of accuracy, or whether or not JJ Abrams instead surprises us all with a movie trilogy about the adventures of Admiral Ackbar and his crew of Ewok fighter pilots.

There have been plenty of names rumored to be attached to this project, and finally, it appears as though we’ve finally learned who will direct Disney and LucasFilm’s Star Wars: Episode VII.

Coincidentally enough, it turns out to be none other than one of the names that we listed for the five directors who should direct the next chapter in the franchise, which we posted on the day that the Disney news broke. According to The Wrap (as well as also being confirmed by Deadline), J.J. Abrams (Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, Super 8) has signed on to direct Star Wars: Episode VII, which is currently slated to release in 2015.

Ben Affleck was reportedly also up for the gig at one point but it ended up going to Abrams in the end. Previously, Abrams had stated that he would likely watch the next Star Wars as a fan, but seemed uninterested in directing. It looks like the “lure of the force” was too strong and Abrams is now in control of the two largest sci-fi franchises of all time. Abrams is currently in post-production of Star Trek Into Darkness while Toy Story 3 writer Michael Ardnt is scripting away on the next chapter of Star Wars, which should hit theatres in just two short years.
