This week on Monday Music we have a nice treat for all the geeks out there. Disney has teamed up with record producer Rick Rubin to create a Star Wars inspired compilation album, and what we have seen so far is outstanding.

Head Space features a trove of well known electronic music producers. Most of you will recognize artists like Flying Lotus and Röyksopp right off the bat, but I can tell you that the entire group of people involved are some of the best. Head Space get’s inspiration and elements from all of the Star Wars films. C-3PO’s Plights features samples of the droid lamenting existence, as well as blaster shots from the movies. Baauer’s Cantina Boys gets really dirty with some classic samples you will immediately recognize.

What is very interesting to note is the Rick Rubin/A-Trak Re-Work of the song Jabba Flow from The Force Awakens. The original artist, Shag Kava, is actually J.J. Abrams and Lin-Manuel Miranda!

You will not be disappointed with this release. Check out the track list below.

1. C-3P0’s Plight – Kaskade

2. Help Me! – GTA

3. Force – TroyBoi

4. Cantina Boys – Baauer

5. Jabba Flow: Rick Rubin Re-Work (feat. A-Trak) – Shag Kava

6. R2 Knows (feat. Barry Drift) – Claude VonStroke

7. NR-G7 –  Rick Rubin

9. Bounty Hunters – Röyksopp

10. Sunset Over Manaan – ATTLAS

11. R2 Where R U? – Flying Lotus

12. Druid Caravan of Smoke – Shlohmo

13. EWOK PUMPP – Rustie

14. Scruffy-Looking Nerfherder – Galantis

The album hits iTunes February 19th, and hits store shelves March 18th. Check out some of the songs below, an interview with Flying Lotus from Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, and a video of Röyksopp performing Bounty Hunters at their show in Oslo last December!

We knew that PS2 emulation was headed to PS4 in one form or another, but we certainly didn’t expect something so soon!

Are you as huge a fan of PS2 classics like as Grand Theft Auto III, Twisted Metal: Black, and Dark Cloud as we are… AND happen to own a PS4?

In a tremendous announcement made by Sony, starting tomorrow, PS2 Classics are headed to the PlayStation Store!  This isn’t like their traditional emulation tactics in the past, either, as they will be adding trophy support, the games will be up-rendered to 1080p, they’ll offer Remote Play, Live Broadcast, Share Play, Activity Feeds, and Second Screen support as well!  In other words, all of the games will be taking FULL advantage of the many benefits the PS4 has to offer (aside from much of that extra power, of course).

For those unfamiliar with these benefits, Remote Play allows you to continue your PS4 gameplay on specific devices, such as the PlayStation Vita, as long as it’s connected to your home Wi-Fi network, Live Broadcast allows you to use a streaming service, such as Twitch, to share your gameplay with others over the internet, Share Play allows you to share your screen with one of your PSN friends so they may help you throughout the game, Activity Feeds are a social media-like tool that shows what games your friends have been playing, and Second Screen allows for other functions, such as a game manual, to appear on the PlayStation Vita or PlayStation app.

The full list of games available, starting tomorrow, are:

-Dark Cloud — $14.99
-Grand Theft Auto III — $14.99
-Grand Theft Auto: Vice City — $14.99
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas — $14.99
-Rogue Galaxy — $14.99
-The Mark of Kri — $14.99
-Twisted Metal: Black — $9.99
-War of the Monsters — $9.99

The following are all the games that will be available to play at the PlayStation Experience at San Francisco this weekend.  Notice there are others on this list?  This means there are more on the horizon!

-Dark Cloud
-Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
-PaRappa the Rapper 2 (coming soon)
-Rogue Galaxy
-The King of Fighters 2000 (coming soon)
-The Mark of Kri
-War of the Monsters

What a wonderful year the PlayStation 20th anniversary is turning out to be!  Which PS2 titles would you like to see on the PS4?  I, for one, can name a few, such as X-Men Legends, Musashi Samurai Legend, and Culdcept!

WHOA DAMN SON! Surreptitiously, under the protection of night, Rockstar has pushed out the GTA Online Heist update! After over 18 Months of perpetual teasing, we can finally play!

Plan, Prepare, Execute – Online Heists span numerous missions featuring new gameplay, vehicles, weapons, and scenarios to test a team’s full set of skills: from computer hacking to stealth infiltration, precision driving to aerial dogfighting, sniping, skydiving and much more.

4-Player Teams, 4 Ways to Play – Choose your roles and strategize to complete each stage of a Heist, with tight communication and coordination the key to success. Some missions will require the team to work as a single unit, while others will break the team into separate roles to complete key objectives. Replay each Heist to experience a different perspective on the action, and complete Elite Challenges for extra cash.

Additional New Adversary Modes – Brings new kinds of competition to GTA Online while new Daily Objectives and other Freemode activities bring chaos to the streets of Los Santos and Blaine County.

Assemble Your Team – Create a Crew or join existing Crews at the Rockstar Games Social Club to earn additional RP rewards as you play.

The update started to push out this morning for PS4 and Xbox One users, and should have already started automatically if you have the auto update feature on. PS3 and Xbox 360 users will have to manually update the title Heists will also arrive on launch for PC users on April 14th.

So Geekscapists, fire up your consoles and hit up Los Santos. It’s going to get crazy.

Briefly: In just one more week you’ll finally be able to pick up Grand Theft Auto V… again.

Sure, you may have already played the game on your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, but after checking out the just-released launch trailer, you’re very likely going to want need to head back to Los Santos.

Rockstar says that “Grand Theft Auto V will take full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with across-the-board graphical and technical improvements to deliver a stunning new level of detail. Increased draw distances, finer texture details, denser traffic, and enhanced resolutions all work together to bring new life to the cities, towns, deserts and oceans of Rockstar North’s epic reimagining of Southern California.”

It’ll include all the content that’s been released for the game so far, as Rockstar notes that “gameplay created since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online, including an extensive array of new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations will also be available for the PlayStation 4 system, Xbox One and PC with much more to come. In addition, the current community of players will have the ability to transfer their Grand Theft Auto Online characters and progression to their choice of PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC.”

We can’t wait. I never actually finished the PS3 version of the title, so it’ll be as good a reason as any for me to jump right back into it. Take a look at the launch trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up.

Briefly: Spring has come and gone, and we’ve still heard nary a word of Grand Theft Auto V‘s online heist component.

Rockstar today released a statement regarding the fact that none have been released (again, they were originally slated for Spring), but the developer assures us that the content is still on its way. Here’s what they had to say:

For those of you asking about other upcoming GTA Online updates, we have lots more in store coming your way soon. We know many fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Online Heists that we had planned to release for you this spring, and they are taking more time to create than originally anticipated. We are very sorry for the delay, and are working hard to bring them to you as soon as we can. Please know that we are focused as always on making the best possible content for you to play and we are thankful to all of you for your patience, understanding and support. Stay tuned for more information on that as well as lots of other ongoing content updates, enhancements and additions to the world of GTA Online that are on the way.

I dropped out of Grand Theft Auto: Online some time ago, but the inclusion of heists would definitely get me back into the game. This is what I imagined when they first showed off the multiplayer component, and what we have now, as fun as it is, is a far cry from what it could be.

Are you still playing GTA: Online? What’s your favourite thing to do in the title? Sound out below!

Online

Briefly: It’s finally happening.

Grand Theft Auto V is headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The new version of the game was revealed at Sony’s E3 press conference earlier tonight, and it looks great.

This is great. I can’t wait to buy this game again (yep, I’m one of those suckers). Take a look at the new in-engine trailer, and let us know if you’re excited.

Grand Theft Auto V definitely continued the tradition of each entry in the series being an improvement over the previous. Looking back, every release in the franchise has advanced not only the nature of open world gameplay but has pushed the limits of modern consoles. GTA V is no different. However, on top of all of these incredible reasons for calling GTA V the best of the best, it’s something else that brings Rockstar’s most recent to an even higher level. In fact, all of the open world, motion capture and technological advances in the game are not so significant when compared to the leaps Rockstar North took in terms of character and narrative storytelling.

But first, let’s look back. The characters of “Claude,” Tommy Vercetti, Carl Johnson, and Niko Bellic, are not that complex. Their storylines are practically carbon copies of each other when you boil them down and oftentimes the majority of the story can be whittled down to just driving and talking. This isn’t to say that the previous games were not innovative, breathtaking and fun! But the innovations all centered on  newer gameplay or open world elements and this usually led to most players bailing on the world and just terrorizing the open worlds of San Andreas, Vice City and Liberty City. And why not? The protagonists of most GTA games are motivated by revenge or criminal circumstances beyond their control. They’re not driven by much of an internal pathos.

GTAProtag

In GTA V, the closest we come to these devices appear in later portions of the game once we’ve become heavily invested and two of our main characters have decided to embrace their criminal lifestyles (or in the case of Michael, make excuses for why he’s finding himself again leading a life of crime). Trevor is always a psychopath, the most in tune with a lot of player’s needs to just “tear shit up”… and that’s not to say he’s two dimensional. Of the three, he’s the one who experiences the biggest range of emotions, at times feeling betrayed by his friends and even (possibly) discovering true love… which was hilarious. It’s not surprising to find that he’s arguably the most popular character in the game. He’s even introduced by putting a definitive end to one of GTA IV’s more simple protagonists!

GTA Franklin

Franklin may sadly be the least developed of the characters, and bears far too many resemblances to Carl Johnson of GTA: San Andreas, but he has the self-awareness that CJ did not. He ends up improving his own position not through happenstance, but because that is what he wants to be doing with his life. There’s a major difference there, in that all three of these characters have aspirations worth rooting for, that keep players from simply abandoning their stories and wreaking mayhem. Eventually, when Franklin realizes that he has been doing the same line of work that he was doing while a gang-banger (except for a higher level of merchandise and financial reward) he laments that he hasn’t actually made any changes to his life. This could be a commentary on the lack of true development in previous entries but the self reflection is something that we haven’t seen before and is inherent in all three characters.

GTA-V-Trevor-9

Trevor Phillips comes across as a garden variety wild man when we first meet him, but over the course of the game we learn of childhood psychological abuse, repressed bisexuality, and severe abandonment issues. These developments of course are not informed character traits told through exposition but are illustrated throughout the course of the game. Rarely does GTA V stop in its tracks to tell us something without having us experience it alongside the characters. Trevor is troubled and haunted by his life but not in the way Niko Belic was. Niko could never stop reminding us exactly how horrible his life was but we never saw or experienced any of it. They never seemed to inform his mostly “blank slate” character reactions. With Trevor, we get a character who is real enough that he doesn’t need to tell us, but that doesn’t keep the ghosts of his past from shaping the story and gameplay.

GTAMichael

Michael… well, Michael is the man who can’t fight his own nature. He aspires to be something that he is not, and this leads to his kinship with Franklin, but he only succeeds in bringing trouble to himself and his family when he fights his true desires. Getting out of the criminal game in the first place is what caused things to go wrong for him, especially on a personal level, and he seems throughout the game to be either waiting for death to free him or a new direction. Even with danger arriving at his doorstep, it becomes more invigorating and healing for he and his family than the complacency that their lives had become.

And of course, you have the characters interactions and reliances on each other, which is the greatest aspect of the game. Each character’s actions have major implications for the other two and the plot, both on a story and character level, become fascinatingly complicated. The writing in a Rockstar game hit all time highs with Red Dead Redemption and L.A. Noire and now we are reaping the rewards in a story in which personal interactions can have just as satisfying a result for the player than pulling off a major heist.

These are all simple observations of characters who aren’t labyrinthine by any means, but who are far more complex than most video game characters of our day. Most have a singular character trait and direction (if they have one at all). They usually end up being what the plot requires them to be and the stories sputter to a halt with no internal engines to drive them. In the case of GTA V, like most great storytelling, the plot and the characters are tightly intertwined, the investment only growing tighter as the story continues. And even with all of the shooting, killing and social destruction, that is the type of innovation that helps move the gaming industry onto a league alongside its long respected peers.

Last week, Brian Tee got us rooting for ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2′ as Liu Kang! Now, on the day of the new series’ release on Machinima, director Kevin Tancharoen joins us in the studio to talk video games, Mortal Kombat and Hollywood adaptations! On top of that, our friend Andrew Duvall from SyFy’s ‘Fangasm’ joins me as as co-host to talk about Geek Sincerity VS Reality TV! This is a great episode, which includes talk of video game adaptations we’d love to see, the best parts of GTA 5 and giant Kaiju monsters! PLUS! The challenge of bringing Mortal Kombat to screen (of course)!

Actor Brian Tee is the latest actor to take on the role of Liu Kang in Machinima’s ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’ Season 2. And this summer, we saw Brian get tossed out a window by Hugh Jackman in ‘The Wolverine’. So of course I jumped at the chance to have him on the show to talk comics and video games! In this episode, we talk about how his character D.K. in ‘Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’ was actually a good guy, growing up as a football player and discovering your inner theater geek and how Brian used to play Mortal Kombat in the pizza shop where he worked. And of course, what is it like to step into the shoes of a beloved video game character? PLUS! I talk some GTA V! How is it already the best GTA game?

Briefly: We’re finally just a few weeks away from the release of Rockstar’s highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V, and the developer has just debuted the official trailer for the game.

In the short (just one minute long) video, we get to see plenty of Los Santos (which looks pretty gorgeous), plenty of explosions, and we also learn just what brought our three protagonists together again. It’s a great trailer, though I don’t know if I could even be more excited for the game at this point.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know which console you’ll be picking up the game on! Grand Theft Auto V hits stores on September 17th!

Briefly: Here it is folks.

That’s right, it’s Thursday morning, and Rockstar has just (finally) debuted the first multiplayer footage from Grand Theft Auto V.

We’ve all been very curious to learn just what Grand Theft Auto V‘s multiplayer component would bring to the table, and that time is finally here. Take a look at the multiplayer first-look below, and let us know just how excited you are!

Grand Theft Auto V hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17th.

Amazing, right?

Briefly: Nope, it’s not a video of GTA V’s highly anticipated multiplayer mode (that’s coming Thursday), but it’s still pretty damn cool.

Rockstar today overhauled the official Grand Theft Auto website with a Los Santos / Blaine County travelogue. The new site features plenty of new screenshots, and also goes in-depth on some of the things you’ll be able to do in the game.

The site is absolutely full of info, and I’d implore you to check it out if you’re excited for the game. Take a look at a plethora of new screenshots below, and let us know what you think! Grand Theft Auto V hits theatres on September 17th!

Bah, this looks INCREDIBLE!

Briefly: We’ve all been very curious to learn just what Grand Theft Auto V‘s multiplayer component would bring to the table, and it looks like we won’t be waiting much longer.

Rockstar’s official blog has just revealed that the first Online gameplay trailers and previews will hit the web this Thursday, August 15th.

We’ll be sure to share the videos as soon as they’re available! Let us know if you’re excited!

Here it is, folks.

Long awaited, and now just a few months away from release, Rockstar Games has just debuted the first phenomenal gameplay footage from Grand Theft Auto V. We all pretty much knew what we’d be looking at here, but damn does it look good.

I won’t waste any of your time describing the preview, as this just dropped seconds ago. Watch the footage below, and let us know how freaking excited you are! Grand Theft Auto V hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17th!

Even if you’re planning to immediately upgrading to a PS4 or Xbox One upon release, Rockstar is giving us one very good reason to hold onto our old consoles. Grand Theft Auto V hits stores less than two months before Sony and Microsoft release their next generation of consoles.

Rockstar isn’t at E3 this year, so I’m guessing we won’t be seeing any new footage this week. The developer has, however, released a batch of sexy new screenshots. Even if it isn’t next-gen, this game is pretty.

Take a look at the new images below, and be sure to let us know how excited you are! Grand Theft Auto V releases on September 17th!

Sony just announced the details for their GTA V Special Edition and Collector’s Edition pre-orders over on their Playstation Blog, and I have to say that the offers are more tempting than taking a tank through the streets of downtown to cruise for prostitutes (because we’ve all partaken in that little GTA outing by now). These pre-orders are live now and anyone who places an order between now and Sept. 17th get access to this in game Atomic Blimp… you know, for skydiving.

GTA Blimp

As for the Special and Collector’s Editions, here are the general details with more information available on the GTA V pre-order page.

The Grand Theft Auto V Collector’s Edition and Grand Theft Auto V Special Edition are the perfect way for fans to celebrate the return of GTA, with special digital content and exclusive Grand Theft Auto V physical items. Grand Theft Auto V Collector’s Edition will retail for $149.99, while the Grand Theft Auto V Special Edition will retail for $79.99 (check with your local retailer for international prices). All versions are now available for pre-order until September 17, 2013, while supplies last.

Look for online pre-order links to be updated at www.rockstargames.com/V/preorder starting later today.

And you can probably use that Collectible Steel Book as a weapon as well now that I think of it… See you on the streets!

Remember when Grand Theft Auto V was set to release this Spring? If that had happened… you’d probably be playing it right now. Instead, take a long, hard look at these 12 new screenshots, as you still have four months to wait for the game to release.

Just remember, as Shigeru Miyamoto once said, “A delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad.”

Rockstar today (finally) announced the official release date for the highly anticipated next chapter in the Grand Theft Auto series.

Sadly, it isn’t the Spring release we were all hoping for, so you’re going to be waiting more than a few months to get your hands on this one. Grand Theft Auto V will hit Ps3 and Xbox 360 (still crossing my fingers for a Wii U announcement) on September 17th. That’s about seven months from now if you don’t feel like counting.

Check out the press release below for more information. Sorry gamers, I know you were eagerly looking forward to April (rumoured) so you could pick this up. Why not grab Ni No Kuni while you wait?

Rockstar Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), is proud to announce that Grand Theft Auto V is expected to launch worldwide for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system on September 17, 2013.

Los Santos: a sprawling sun-soaked metropolis full of self-help gurus, starlets and fading celebrities, once the envy of the Western world, now struggling to stay afloat in an era of economic uncertainty and cheap reality TV. Amidst the turmoil, three very different criminals plot their own chances of survival and success: Franklin, a former street gangster, now looking for real opportunities and serious money; Michael, a professional ex-con whose retirement is a lot less rosy than he hoped it would be; and Trevor, a violent maniac driven by the chance of a cheap high and the next big score. Running out of options, the crew risks everything in a series of daring and dangerous heists that could set them up for life.

“Grand Theft Auto V continues to push the series forward in new ways; Rockstar North are creating our deepest, most beautiful and most immersive world yet,” said Sam Houser, Founder of Rockstar Games. “We are very excited for people to learn more about the game in the coming months.”

The September release date moves the launch back from its original projected release window of spring 2013 in order to allow additional development time. The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world Rockstar Games has yet created, Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game’s three lead characters, playing all sides of the game’s interwoven story.

All the classic hallmarks of the groundbreaking series return, including incredible attention to detail and Grand Theft Auto’s darkly humorous take on modern culture, alongside a brand new and ambitious approach to open world multiplayer.

As with any rumour, take this one with a grain of salt. In any case, if this turns out true, it’s pretty exciting.

It appears as though pre-order posters for Grand Theft Auto V may have been leaked. As we knew before, the poster confirms the game will be releasing for Xbox 36o and PS3. The big news here is that the images reveal a Spring release for the much anticipated game. It’s easy to fake a poster of course, but they look very well done, and feature some hi-res art from characters that we have already seen.

The timing is also appropriate, as GameInformer’s December issue is set to have a MASSIVE GTAV blowout.

Check out the posters below! How excited are you to get back into this universe?

An episode a long time in the making! My friends K. Harrison Sweeney and Steve Palmer, voice actors from one of the greatest games of all time, Red Dead Redemption, come on Geekscape to talk about working on the game, their acting work and putting together their upcoming film “From the Trailer to the Grave”, which will feature much of the RDR cast! It’s a pretty awesome episode to listen to and you’re sure to learn a ton about one of your most beloved games! Also, Steve talks about writing comics for Atomic Basement and Harrison talks about protesting zombie rights on the front steps of the Wyoming state legislature! Plus! I read some Geekscapist emails and ALMOST gets my audio right… but not quite!
