This week on Monday Music we go back to the 80’s with Mr. Mister’s lilting ballad Broken Wings.

When I first came up with the idea of Monday Music, I wanted it to be an outlet for new songs I’ve discovered or old songs I’ve rediscovered. Sharing a tune that our readers might not have thought about in a while, or something they will love.

Let me weave you a tale about how Broken Wings entered my universe a few months ago, and how a sign from the universal dream we all occupy, returned.

It was many months ago. Snow still fell in Alaska, and the Birchwood Airpark was covered in a foot of soft fluffy powder. The hangar apartment I called my domicile was frigid. The cold steel walls towered over me, while the biting concrete floor sat below me, a constant reminder of how quickly life can fade. The thick, frozen air hung heavily in my lungs. Each breath carved a little glimmer of heat from my core. I sat there, fully dressed in winter attire, at my computer. The only thing keeping me warm was the light from my computer monitor. That and the space heater below my desk, but let’s forget about that, it’s less artistic.

The time of day (or night) is lost. The sun only visits me for a short few hours a day. Like a petulant drug dealer handing out samples, giving only small morsels of light and warmth, just enough to keep life going, but never thriving. Was it day? Or night? Nevertheless, it doesn’t matter. I spent my time sitting at my computer, playing video games. A short escape into a fantastical worlds. A brief escape. This time I was playing Overwatch. I was enjoying solo queue. Rounds won, and rounds lost even each other out. No progress being made in either direction. New friends came and went, each round had different entities. Everyone had their own world. Their own dream. Each digital character, directly attached to a physical, corporeal being. Dozens, if not hundreds came in and out of my dream. Some were great allies, while others were fucking salty scrubs. All memorable, but none as memorable as one ally. One singular creature came into my world, and he will forever be ingrained into my memories. That was a man, who went by the name: Brokenwings.

It was a round like any other. New friends thrown into a server. This particular group was full of vocal and jovial players – voice chat was running strong. Planning and tactics were the topic of conversation, as the timer ticked closer to zero. Zero. A poignant number. Normally reserved to represent the LACK of something. An emptiness. A void. The same emptiness we all have inside ourselves. The same void we frantically try to fill. In Overwatch, zero is a fickle mistress. Typically it carries the same real world representation. Empty. Health reserves: empty. Ammunition: empty. Progress: empty. But for one brief moment, at the beginning of the round, zero means something else. It means we are beginning! We are born again into the round. A whole new world of possibilities were thrust into our arms, and we got to choose which ones we consumed. My teammates and I were ready to go. We were ready to fight. We weren’t going to die for our country, but we were going to make the other team die for theirs. Me and my four teammates… and one Brokenwings.

First round was over, the score is lost to me in this moment, but at the half, I finally took inventory of the identities of my crew. Four other names lost to the cold void, but one I will forever remember. Brokenwings. Brokenwings. Brokenwings. He was a beacon of hope in the dark. Upon noticing this, I quickly took control of the voice chat. I shouted into the server “BROKENWINGS! LIKE THAT MR. MISTER SONG!”. The four others laughing, Brokenwings mic button remained unpressed. I could sense his laughter though. His utter silence was enough to tell me he understood. We were now best friends. Our souls connected. Our dreams entwined. Then: ZERO.

The round started. We all began to rush the point. Now the team was no longer strangers in a strange land, but brothers. Brothers in arms. Brokenwings at my side. We ran onto the point, and in normal fashion I was the first to fall in battle. As the respawn timer counted down to ZERO, I quickly pulled out my phone. 6: I scoured the desk for my phone. 5: I grabbed the device and unlocked the screen. 4: I closed the copy of the Desiderata I was reading. 3: Opened YouTube. 2:Typed in Brokenwings. 1: Pressed play on the song. When my character came back to life, the hissing cymbal of the tune came on across my speakers. As soon as I was given control of my character, I knew what must be done. I ran into battle… with my mic button pressed. The elegant melodies of Mr. Mister rang out into the server.

By the time I made it to the point, Richard Page’s angelic voice belted out the titular lyrics. TAKE! THESE BROKENWINGS! AND LEARN TO FLY AGAIN!

The server voice chat was a castrophony. Anger. Sorrow. Happiness. Laughter. All fed into a whirlwind of Mr. Mister. My teammates began singing along with me. A group of 5 men all belting out the same lyrics. All except the man himself. Brokenwings. I could tell by his silence that he was flattered, and honored that we all could be singing a tune in his honor. He was the man of the hour, but was humble. Said nothing. My bard like abilities filled everyone with vigor. We pushed harder and harder. Harder and harder. Faster and faster. Throwing ourselves at the point. A constant action over and over and over again. Live. Die. Repeat. We teetered on the definition of insanity. Constantly trying to do the same thing over and over again, hoping for different results. This time though, things WERE different. Mr. Mister was on a loop. We all singing the song for a third and fourth time. Laughter peppered throughout each chorus and verse. This magical concoction we created could only spell one outcome. And when the timer finally ran out, hit ZERO we knew what we had created. VICTORY!

The post game results came in. We had won! The final screen appeared and we all saw the actual man of the hour. Brokenwings was up for vote, as he was the game’s best healer. Of course the man who went under the title of Brokenwings would play as Mercy. The winged healer – so fitting, because his name itself caused us to win. Without his name, and his connection to 80’s pop rock group Mr. Mister, we would never have won. We all said our goodbyes, as we all exited the round and returned to the start menu. Laughter and happiness still flowed out of my mouth. For a brief moment, lost in the frozen desolate darkness, I found happiness. We found happiness. I stood up and took inventory of myself. I looked around and noticed that the room I once occupied was no longer frigid and dark, but was feeling full. Full of warmth and light. I noticed the Sun had started to shine into the windows of my hangar. I smiled as the warm rays enveloped my face. I felt loved. I felt whole. I felt content. Was it the silent powers of a random stranger on Overwatch that brought out the Sun? Or just the normal rotation of the earth? We will never be able to tell. And, what came over us in that game? Was it really just the machinations of a lonely Alaskan gamer trying to get attention by playing an 80’s ballad for a room a strangers? Or was it possible carbon monoxide poisoning from a potentially faulty Modine heater? No one will ever know. What we will know, is that for a brief moment. Six random heroes came together as brothers. As family. As ohana. All because of a single man, and the name he chose for his Blizzard account. We all salute you, Brokenwings.

Last week, we lost another one of our great musical heroes. Chris Cornell passed away on May 18th, and the music world mourned.

This week on Monday Music, we are sharing Seasons. A song about hoping the world will slow down. A song about cherishing the moments you have. A song that cannot be any more poignant.

Geekscapists might recognize the song from the 2013 Man of Steel. Cornell rerecorded the tune for the film. Take a listen below.

Rest In Peace, Chris.

There was no way I was going to pass up this incredible calendar aligning opportunity.

This week on Monday Music we’re covering *NSYNC’s It’s Gonna Be Me. Let’s relive fifth grade all over again!

Some say this song is about a woman who has been scorned by past lovers, I say NAY! NAY! It’s obviously an allegory for the war in Kuwait.

Kidding aside, there isn’t much to be said about It’s Gonna Be Me seventeen years later. One of those Max Martin instant golds, it’s still a banger to this day. I’ll be playing it this weekend at the bars!

This week on Monday Music we’ve got the first single from the 12th studio album from the legendary 311. Check out the video for Too Much To Think below!

This is all really surprising to me.

Personally, I’ve relegated 311 to a “dead band”. A punchline to a joke about milquetoast music. Never really exploring the band’s content, I almost dismissed the press release all together; I was just going to write up the new Weeknd music video instead. I stopped and thought “ehhh, lets just give it a chance”.

I was blown away. What the hell happened to 311?! This wasn’t what I remembered them as. I even went back and listened to some of their older work.

Too Much To Think is a tremendous single. It has a very “modern” feel: The production is tight, the lyrics feel like they could come from any Top 40 tropical house track, the instrumentals are vibrant and relaxing. I am getting this nostalgic feeling for a band that holds no nostalgia for me.

The band’s newest album, MOSAIC, is out this summer. I will definitely be getting my hands on it.

You can also check out their Summer 2017 North American tour info on their official website. They’re hitting up a lot of cities and festivals!

This week’s Monday music is from a band that needs no introduction.

I cannot describe my excitement for this song, Gorillaz are one of my all time favorite bands. The past few days have been those of a intense, joyous fervor in the music community. Gorillaz have released their first song in five years, and it’s a politically charged one at that. Debuted a day before President Trump’s inauguration, Hallelujah Money is a direct attack at his presidency. And I cannot be happier for it.

The opening shot of the video is an animated depiction of Trump Tower’s elevator bay. The video “takes place” in one of the tower’s elevators, and the single’s lead singer, Benjamin Clementine, is eerily lit. Clashing symbolic imagery is projected on the walls of the elevator, too many subtleties to coherently list here. Shots of La Candelaria Brotherhood, whose religious garb is almost exactly the same as the KKK, brings a contradicting image. The juxtaposition of the hate that the KKK represents and the peaceful, holy ceremonies of La Candelaria during their holy week. This all alludes to Trump, and that his outward “persona” are not what they seem; a commentary on his supporter’s mental gymnastics trying to excuse his negative traits; OR that he is painted as this terrible tyrant but underneath the surface isn’t. It can really be interrupted both ways.  Shots of Napoleon and Animal Farm are pretty self explanatory. Throughout the video we see Benjamin riding the elevator UP and out from the dark and gloomy imagery, to happiness, rainbows and American flags. The random shot of Spongebob at the end is from an episode where he is fired from his job, a direct reference to Trump’s catchphrase on his reality TV show The Apprentice.

Shot of the elevators from Trump Tower.

The lyrics tell a haunting tale of fear and greed. We must protect our sacred trees and their fruit, from evil scarecrows from the far east. We must build a wall stronger than Jericho. The repeating praises of money, Hallelujah Money, tells us how much we as a modern society worship cash.

I love this song. Most negative critiques of the tune are from people who are ignorant of Gorillaz extensive catalog (I’m looking at you Reddit). All I’ve seen from online keyboard warriors is how this isn’t as good as their “popular” songs, and that Benjamin Clementine is a “terrible fit” for it. OR how Gorillaz need to not be so “political”. These statements are so asinine it hurts. The band has always been political; their first album was a commentary on over-processed “fake” musicians. Demons Days is an anti Iraq war record (with direct attacks on George Bush). Plastic Beach, lambasting our instant gratification, extremely disposable society. Each album represents a story, and Hallelujah Money is an interlude or bridging song in the overall story that the next album will be. The 6/8 time signature is discomforting for someone expecting a 4/4 pop song. I love this song. I cannot wait for the full album to be released.

Let us know in the comments your thoughts on Hallelujah Money. What do you think about it’s anti Trump/capitalism message? How well do you think Benjamin Clementine fits in with the group.

This week on Monday Music we’re bringing you a delicious future house remix of that crazy popular hip-hop song Broccoli. Check out the Party Pupils Remix below.

If you’ve been living under a rock lately, let me bring you up to speed. Broccoli debuted early last year from hiphop artists D.R.A.M. and Lil Yachty. It’s very much in the same boat (HAH!) as Lil Yachty’s Minnesota. In this up-and-coming sub-genre upbeat and lively, lullaby-esque melodies combine with hard hitting trap style sub-bass to bring a surprisingly cohesive song that kicks.  The lyrics that accompany the tune are just as fun and upbeat. Broccoli has hit double platinum since it’s release in April 2016.

That brings us to the track you’ve just listened to. The Party Pupils Remix takes the extremely recognizable lyrics from the original and adds a toe-tapping sidechained beat. This is how to remix a song; music producers take note.

Be sure to check out more of Party Pupils on their Facebook.

So ‘scapists, what do you think? A faithful remix of the original or utter trash? Let us know below!

We’re back! That’s right faithful Geekscapists, we are back with another episode of Monday Music. I sincerely apologize for the lack of postings, as your resident “Resident Advisor” here I feel like I’ve failed you. I’ve not brought the beautiful creation that is music to your eyes and ears. Well, that’s about to change.

I was just shown this dark and spooky EP from the “Detroit Sludge” grandfather himself, Marshall Applewhite. Check out Under A Pale Moon below.

Under A Pale Moon is the latest from Late Night Munchies, the Alaska born/Seattle based record label helmed by House producer Tony H. This EP gave me chills.

A very recent sub-genre to the techno family, Detroit Sludge was co-created by Marshall himself. Featuring slower tempos, dark sub-bass frequencies, and oscillating mids, Sludge gives off an uneasy feeling to listeners. Deem’d the “anti-drug” of EDM, this genre is not for the faint of heart.

The titular track really evokes the feeling of dark, desolate space. The album art and the tune are PERFECT for each other. My personal favorite, Lice, feels different than most of what the genre has to offer. It’s very bubbly, and compliments the overall vibe of Under A Pale Moon. One of my criteria for a strong, long lasting song is its ability to be remixed and still retain the essence of the original piece. Sham is a song that should be remixed, it’s probably the best track on the EP.

You can listen to Under A Pale Moon right now on the Late Night Munchies SoundCloud, and pick up the EP yourself on December 19th.

This week on Monday Music, we are checking out the video for Dead Heavens single Feel Low.

Dead Heavens are a New York rock band consisting of members with pedigree (Walter Schreifels, Paul Kostabi, Drew Thomas, Nathan Aguilar), and they all bring their unique sounds together.

Originally released back in February, Feel Low is the bands “latest” single. Released on 7″ vinyl, it’s sound reminds me of bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s retro punk aesthetic. I don’t think there is anyway to explain that without sounding as pretentious as I did.

What brought this song (and band) onto my radar was the music video itself. It was directed by Mega64 co-founder Derrick Acosta. Derrick has directed a few videos over the years from a handful of artists, Mrs. Magician, Keepers and Plateaus just to name a few. All of which evoke his unique approach to film making. You can definitely feel his “touch”.

Dead Heavens Feel Low premiers on Adult Swim this week.

Dead Heavens Official Site

This year’s SDCC was an incredible exploration. Suicide Squad had an awesome panel in the legendary Hall H, where they debuted a remix of the films trailer set to original songs from the upcoming soundtrack. Coinciding with that new trailer was the release of the audio for, arguably, the best song on the record. Check out Skrillex & Rick Ross – Purple Lamborghini

https://youtu.be/bX9CvhbfQgg

It’s so awesome, and slightly nostalgic, to hear some of Skrillex’s old samples. Hearing “my name is Skrillex!” followed by Rick Ross’s “Maybach music” was weird as hell. Yet, fitting.

This is the perfect combination of Skrillex’s dubstep/festival trap influences with Rick Ross’s hip hop drive. The hook is 100% Sonny Moore. The digitally altered sample of Rick Ross at 1:12 gave me goosebumps. I am super excited to see what kinds of remix’s we will see from this tune.

This week on Monday music we go back, BACK to 1988 with Megadeth’s cover of the Sex Pistols hit Anarchy In The UK.

I think now, more than ever before, this song is fitting. Especially after last weeks vote from the UK.

The Megadeth version features changed lyrics to focus on the USA, but obviously maintains the original title. PLUS, you get to hear Dave Mustaines angelic voice belt out some classic lyrics.

So give it a listen while you watch the news! Keep the lyrics in your head when the US has their elections (Racist X Criminal 2016) and when the EU tries to keep the United Kingdom in it’s group.

Seminal artists blink-182 have come back to the studio, and their seventh studio album California is set to hit stores in a few weeks. After a year delay, and departure of Tom Delonge, the bands return is just around the corner.

Today they released their video for the upcoming single Bored to Death. Check it out.

For a group of guys in their 40’s, they still know how to write music for disenfranchised high schoolers. That being said, I find myself toe tapping along with everything from this new album. I cannot wait to pick this up.

California hits stores July 1st.

EDM powerhouse Dillon Francis has just released the music video for his collab with NGHTMRE. Need You video has all of Dillon’s “take the piss” attitude and humor he is known for. Check it out below!

Dillon Francis made his mark on the EDM community with moombahton and moombahcore infused tracks like I.D.G.A.F.O.S.

I really appreciate his take on the stereotypical “mobile DJ” persona. Budget/ancient CD players, full of yourself attitude and going way to hard for a bunch of old people in a garden.

He has gone the whole “trap” scene as of late, but is bringing back what he is known for. Need You features producer NGHTMRE. His signature dark electronic growls and waves fit perfectly with Dillon’s signature vocal sampling.

You can listen to the full track, as well as snag yourself a copy right now! Check out Dillon Francis’ SoundCloud for all the links to purchase it on your favorite platform.

You probably didn’t expect to see Rick Astley on Geekscape, at least in a non “Rickroll” capacity that is. Well the internet meme legend has just released his newest single from his upcoming album 50. Check out Keep Singing below.

50 marks the singers first album in over 10 years, and Keep Singing is his first single in over five years. The album’s title represents Rick’s 50th birthday, as the singer is turning…well 50!

I’ve always liked Rick Astley, even before his Rickrolling rise to fame. When his last single, Lights Out, hit I was extremely impressed that he still has the chops he did all those years ago.

Keep Singing has soul, volume and bounce. It DESPERATELY needs a dance remix. Do yourself a favor and play the youtube video at 1.5X speed. You won’t regret it.

Rick Astley’s 50 hits store shelves June 17th! You can get your hands on the digital preorder’s right now!

We’re back with another Monday Music! This week we’re bringing you an amazing, pounding Tech House track from Tony H. Check out Set Me Free!

Set Me Free really blew me away when I heard it for the first time. I’ve worked with Tony H for the past few years, and he never ceases to amaze me with his music. The deep and vibrant baseline in this track really gets me pumped, and the vocals from Sophie are on point. This song could easily be used as the backdrop for an amazing summer road trip. If they ever remake Easy Rider, then this needs to be the theme song for the film.

Tony H is a DJ and producer from Panama, who now resides in probably the direct antithesis of Panama. Anchorage, Alaska.

He has been producing tracks for years, mostly focusing on House and the myriad of sub genres that go along with it. Late last year he started his own independent record label, Late Night Munchies personifies the Alaskan spirit and brings great musical minds from all over the planet together.

It’s been and interesting few days for one of the Gods of hip hop. Kanye West released his seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo in an incredible event last Thursday.

Kanye had his Yeezy Season 3 fashion show release at Madison Square Garden, where he also performed the new album. A few days later, he performed two songs on Saturday Night Live.

The album was initially streamed live on the music service Tidal, where it was met with tremendous technical difficulties. The record was soon available elsewhere, like Kanye’s official webpage. BUT, Kanye is a fickle beast. He, only a few days later, came out saying that the only way to get The Life of Pablo, would be on Tidal. (Pro Tip: You could potentially find the album on Torrent sites).

The Life of Pablo, is 18 tracks of pure Kanye. The lyrics, as usual, are deep and have multiple meanings. My personal favorites are Wave (at one time the title track of the album), 30 hours and Fade. Fade is going to be remixed from here til 2017. Adding a dembow beat to Fade will be incredible.

The whole release was punctuated by Kanye’s drunken Twitter rant on Sunday. He had gone on to say he was $55 Million in debt, and asked Mark Zuckerberg to invest in “Kanye Ideas”. His twitter stream then devolved into dissing publications for not giving it high enough scores on their reviews. He called out Pitchfork and other “white” publications and told them to not “comment on black music” anymore. Seriously, go to Kanye’s Twitter, its incredible.

Regardless of the controversy, this album is all the Fire Emoji.

It features other artists such as Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Andre 3000, Chance The Rapper, Chris Brown, and more.

The only (legitimate) method of getting The Life of Pablo is on Tidal. It will eventually be released on other platforms, but for now you can get a free month trial to give it a listen.

This week on Monday Music we have a nice treat for all the geeks out there. Disney has teamed up with record producer Rick Rubin to create a Star Wars inspired compilation album, and what we have seen so far is outstanding.

Head Space features a trove of well known electronic music producers. Most of you will recognize artists like Flying Lotus and Röyksopp right off the bat, but I can tell you that the entire group of people involved are some of the best. Head Space get’s inspiration and elements from all of the Star Wars films. C-3PO’s Plights features samples of the droid lamenting existence, as well as blaster shots from the movies. Baauer’s Cantina Boys gets really dirty with some classic samples you will immediately recognize.

What is very interesting to note is the Rick Rubin/A-Trak Re-Work of the song Jabba Flow from The Force Awakens. The original artist, Shag Kava, is actually J.J. Abrams and Lin-Manuel Miranda!

You will not be disappointed with this release. Check out the track list below.

1. C-3P0’s Plight – Kaskade

2. Help Me! – GTA

3. Force – TroyBoi

4. Cantina Boys – Baauer

5. Jabba Flow: Rick Rubin Re-Work (feat. A-Trak) – Shag Kava

6. R2 Knows (feat. Barry Drift) – Claude VonStroke

7. NR-G7 –  Rick Rubin

8. Ghomrassen – Bonobo

9. Bounty Hunters – Röyksopp

10. Sunset Over Manaan – ATTLAS

11. R2 Where R U? – Flying Lotus

12. Druid Caravan of Smoke – Shlohmo

13. EWOK PUMPP – Rustie

14. Scruffy-Looking Nerfherder – Galantis

15. Star Tripper – Breakbot

The album hits iTunes February 19th, and hits store shelves March 18th. Check out some of the songs below, an interview with Flying Lotus from Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 show, and a video of Röyksopp performing Bounty Hunters at their show in Oslo last December!

We’re back after a brief hiatus, because really the only thing that came out was Kanye’s new track and by that time it was too late!

This week we’re bring our Editors favorite Canadian rapper, Drake, with his latest single. Summer Sixteen, just shows you that you can do anything when you get a Grammy nomination for a dis-track.

Last summer Drake and Meek Mills got into it, after Mills complained that Drake wasn’t promoting Mill’s new album, and accusing Drake of not writing his own tracks. What followed was a flurry of insults all penned by the Canadian. There were a few shots fired back and forth between the two, but in the end Mills had to bow out. This was of course only after getting destroyed by Drake, as well as starting a feud with 50 Cent.

Drakes newest single is viewed by some as “excessive”, but he’s been firing on all cylinders lately and doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon. He takes shots at the likes of Kanye, Kendrick Lamar, DJ Khaled and eve the president!

Pickup Summer Sixteen on iTunes right now.

Give it a stream over at Stereogum right now!

This week on Monday Music we get down low with Valentino Khan.

Granted, this song came out in March of last year but today we are gifted with this incredibly strange music video. I could NOT feature it this week.

Valentino Khan has been producing music since he was 16, but didn’t really appear on my radar until 2014 when he was signed to Skrillex’s record label, OWSLA. His electrohouse singles, and trap remixes always bring an incredible vibe.

The Deep Down Low music video is directed by Ian Pons Jewell, who is responsible for A LOT of EDM music videos. All of which have a very unique vibe.

Enough rambling, check out Deep Down Low’s music video below! Click through to the video for a chance to snag a free VIP version of the track!

If you find yourself up here with me in Alaska, then you can catch Valentino Khan LIVE at the Deep Down Low event during Spring Break!

Today we are featuring David Bowie’s newest, and last music video.

If you’ve been living under a proverbial rock, then let me share some awful news. Music legend, David Bowie has passed away after a short battle with cancer.

Bowie had just recently released his 25th studio album, Blackstar on Janruary 8th. Just two days before his passing. And with that, the music video for his single Lazarus.

The video features Bowie in a hospital bed, film in an interesting 1:1 aspect ratio. It’s easy to speculate that this is his own personal eulogy.

The haunting melody perfectly accentuates the lyrics. Producer Tony Visconti, long time Bowie collaborator, has outdone himself.

Take a moment, and listen to a great mans goodbye.

This week on Monday Music we’re showing off the highly anticipated team up of two of EDM’s rising stars. Jauz and Marshmellow joined forces to give a funky jersey trap sounding twerk style remix of Duke Dumont’s Need U 100%. Take a listen below!

Both Jauz and Marshmellow have blown up recently making crazy unique new sounds, and getting a lot of attention for their remixes of popular songs. Jauz’s remix of Tip Toe Wing In My Jawwdinz and Marshmellow’s remix of Where Are U Now are two of my favorite tunes to play out when DJing.

I feel ultimately that this collaboration was hyped way to much. Both artists, as well as some of the bigger names likes Skrillex, really talked this track up a lot. It’s GOOD, but it’s not the amazing, world ending banger fans were expecting. Still though, it’s free so give it a download. You can be sure I will be playing it out this weekend at the bar.

We’re getting a little bit weirder this week, and leaving the hood behind. This week we’re going to explore the odd genre called Vaporwave

You’ve probably have heard that one trippy song by Macintosh Plus. A pitch shifted, multi sampled, remixed version of Diana Ross’s Your Move. It has been blowing up recently, and has kind of become a “meme” in the YouTube Haiku community. But you may be asking yourself, “What the hell is Vaporwave?”.

When I first discovered Vaporwave, I was skeptical. It’s a genre, that I thought initially, was a parody genre. People ironically throwing in Japanese characters into their song titles, and the constant talk of “AESTHETIC”. But the more and more I explored the genre, and it’s countless subgenres, I began to fall in love with it.

The vibe, or A E S T H E T I C, the genre is trying to exude is an interesting one. A lot of the sounds you will hear are very pitch shifted down, and will be kind of droning. You will immediately get a kind of, nostalgic feeling, which is what a lot of the songs are trying for. The artists are trying to teleport you to a retro future, where the pinks and teals of the late 80’s and early 90’s are the only colors you will see as your walk an abandoned mall. There is a huge cross over with the trend of using outdated technology, as VHS and cassette tapes are the norm. Labels like Dream Catalogue have gone one step further, and instead of releasing albums on Vinyl have gone for the magnetic glory of cassette tapes. Granted it’s an inherently BAD medium for sound, as the frequencies on it favor the high side. Getting the latest vaporwave release on a little cassette just drive home the whole retro future vibe.

This week’s Monday Music focuses on t e l e p a t h’s newest release. Him/her/they are one of the juggernauts in the Vaporwave community, and have released some of the quintessential songs that define the genre.  This latest release is nothing new, but really shows you what you can expect from this quirky genre. Take a listen below to the full album, and be sure to check out t e l e p a t h on Band Camp.

This week on Monday Music, we’re going to the dirty south with Lil Wayne’s newest mixtape!

No Ceilings 2 came out a few weeks ago on Thanksgiving, but that was before I started writing these posts, SO HERE IT IS NOW!

Lil Wayne has really outdone himself this time around. No Ceilings 2, released on his own Young Money Entertainment, is a great progression from his previous release of No Ceilings. This time there were no track leaks, and when it hit on Datpiff it was met with positive reviews.

Wayne brings his own unique style to existing instrumentals. His version of Hotline Bling turns the Drake tune into a jailhouse love ballad.

The whole record has an extreme amount of sub bass, and each song really kicks you in the chest. My only complaint with the album is that sometimes, Wayne’s signature auto-tune vocals sound disjointed and overdone.

You can snag the entire No Ceilings 2 mixtape for free on Datpiff.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this Mixtape, what do you think of Lil Wayne’s covers?
