Deadline has just reported that everybody’s favorite Hollywood producer Roberto Orci (Get it? Because he isn’t?) is no longer directing the third installment of the current Star Trek film franchise. Furthermore, everyone’s favorite director Edgar Wright (Not sarcasm) is at the top of a short list to take over.

Trek fans will be partying pretty hard tonight. You know, more than usual.

It has been an interesting year for Orci. After splitting up with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman, Orci was assigned director of Star Trek and producer of 2016’s Power Rangers. We are less than a month away from the New Year and Orci is out of both projects. He and Kurtzman are still working together on TV with Sleepy Hollow, however.

Star Trek 3 would have been Orci’s first time directing a film, of any kind. Although he’s been everywhere in Hollywood, directing he has never done. Not even a commercial or a music video, and earlier this year he was given the keys to dad’s sports car. Not to discount that amazing opportunity, I would fight tooth and nail to defend that decision if it were given to me. But as the circumstances of Orci’s departure are unknown, one can only speculate what caused Paramount (or anyone calling the shots) to blink.

Edgar Wright’s involvement is still up in the air, but can we take a moment to imagine how banging of a job he could do? Forget that Simon Pegg is a part of the Enterprise and their director/actor relationship in a major film would be glorious to see. No, just remember who Edgar Wright is. His visual language. Now put that in space. This is a total 180 from how I felt about Star Trek 3 before today.

However, Roberto Orci will stay on as producer and maintain some writing credit.

UPDATE: Badass Digest is saying Orci was out because of the script.

From Badass Digest:

[UPDATE: I’ve been in touch with some folks and it seems like the script was one of the problem factors. Paramount shut the production down last month, sending home all the design people while they battled over the direction of the screenplay. I imagine all this stuff is gone now]

Briefly: This may just be the best car commercial that’s ever been produced.

Seriously, it features both Spocks (Nimoy and Quinto)… need I say more?

It also features the insanely gorgeous Audi S7, and they didn’t even pay me to say that. Check it out below, and let us know how much fun you had watching it!

http://youtu.be/WPkByAkAdZs

Briefly: It’s been rumoured for some time, but now it’s official: J.J. Abrams will not direct the third instalment in the new Star Trek series.

During a Collider interview promoting the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-Ray release, Abrams let the news drop:

It’s a little bittersweet.  But, I will say that I’m going to be producing the movie.  Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands.  I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing.  I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done.  We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility.  I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is.

So that’s that. I’m sure that some of you will be severely disappointed about the news, while others will be absolutely over the moon (I’m definitely in the former camp). In any case, now that Abrams is out of the picture, who would you like to see step into the director’s chair? On that note, how did you feel about Star Trek Into Darkness?

2013 Winter TCA Tour - Day 3

What’s up with the price of movie tickets these days? They’re a bank-buster, am I right? One way to circumvent draining your life savings is to hold off until the movies you want to see make their way to DVD. Here’s a look at the best films coming to Redbox and Video-On-Demand this September.

#1. The Kings of Summer

kings-of-summer

One of the year’s best comedies also happens to be one of the most overlooked indie films of 2013. The Sundance Film Festival entry The Kings of Summer (formerly titled Toy’s House) delivers all of the nostalgic and carefree goodness you could possibly want. When two best friends decide that their overbearing parents are too much to handle, they decide to run away and build their own house deep in the woods. With an odd-ball wildcard named Biaggio tagging along for the ride, these three teenagers learn about life, love and responsibility. One of the greatest aspects of The Kings of Summer is its refusal to cater to the sentimental and sappy storylines that always manage to plague a stellar comedy. The laughs are non-stop and the journey is beyond enjoyable … it’s epic. This is one indie gem you won’t want to miss. (SEPTEMBER 24TH)

#2. World War Z

world war z

Brad Pitt’s coddled and long-awaited baby, World War Z, proved to be one of the summer’s biggest hits. But not only was it a box-office smash, the zombie action film was a massively energetic and engaging thrill ride. When fast-moving and flesh-eating undead spread like wildfire, government officials take shelter on aircraft carriers in the middle of the ocean. Pitt stars as Gerry Lane, a former U.N. investigator who is literally “forced” to seek out a cure to this apocalyptic disease. World War Z is a high-octane adventure that’s sure to appeal to action enthusiasts, zombie lovers and fans of a strong story. If you missed out on this big-budget summer blockbuster, be sure to catch it later this month. (SEPTEMBER 17TH)

#3. The East

the-east

One often criticized facet of modern Hollywood is the lack of originality and clever ideas. Well one of 2013’s most unique and intriguing screenplays came in the form of Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij’s The East. As another Sundance Film Festival selection, The East centers around a private intelligence firm operative (played by Brit Marling) who infiltrates an anarchist group wreaking havoc on major corporations. A rare diamond in the rough that’s highly psychological and makes you question your own personal morals, The East satisfies on a multitude of levels. Thanks in large part to a collection of supporting roles from big names like Ellen Page, Patricia Clarkson and Alex Skarsgard, this feels a lot less like an independent film and more so a modestly-budgeted game-changer. (SEPTEMBER 17TH)

Honorable Mention: It’s also worth taking a flier on the illusionist thriller Now You See Me (SEPTEMBER 3RD) starring Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson. And although I can’t vouch for either film, I’ve heard solid feedback on both Disconnect (SEPTEMBER 17TH) and The Iceman (SEPTEMBER 3RD). Finally, who could forget J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness (SEPTEMBER 10TH).

Did you know that they were doing special screenings of J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness on May15th at 8pm? Well, if seeing the movie before everyone else wasn’t incentive enough, those in attendance will also be receiving a special limited edition print from Paramount, Bad Robot and Gallery 1988.

The origins are simple: reward the most avid IMAX fans with limited edition, collectible prints for select films. IMAX, together with our studio partners, engages some of the most celebrated artists to create unique art that is exclusively for IMAX moviegoers. We will be offering these prints at the earliest IMAX showings to reward those who see it first!

We’re excited and honored to collaborate with Paramount Pictures, Bad Robot and Gallery 1988 to unveil the first edition in the series: a special Star Trek Into Darkness print from artist Mark Englert. We’re now (finally) just one day away from the anticipated release of Digital Extremes’ Star Trek: The Video Game. The title’s marketing has made it look pretty damn awesome so far, so I’m really looking forward to hearing what reviewers have to say about it (look for ours soon). Star Trek: The Video Game helps bridge the gap between 2009’s Star Trek and next month’s Star Trek Into Darkness, and will showcase the Gorn stealing the Helios device from the resettling Vulcans.

Watch the launch trailer for the game below, and let us know what you think! This is one movie tie-in that I’m hoping is worth its cover price!

Paramount today released a new TV spot for the wildly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness. This spot doesn’t seem to feature any new footage, but somehow it still excites the hell out of me.

With Star Trek Into Darkness hitting theaters on Friday May 17th, there’s a good chance that we may actually see the trailer premiere online earlier in the week.

If you were lucky enough to be in London during last night’s Earth Hour and just happened to look out into the dark, dark night, you may have noticed something very cool glowing amongst the stars.

Paramount used the evening to hold an awesome promotional event in the city; while all of the lights were off, a gigantic starfleet symbol appeared in the sky. I wonder how many UFO reports the city received over the course of the evening…

Alright! It’s an Unexpected Journey Into Darkness! My almost complete thoughts on ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”! Why 48 fps doesn’t bother me! Are there really pacing issues? What IS the Geek Movie Of The Year? Star Trek Into Darkness gets a new trailer and 9 minutes… but what does it mean!?! Getting into comics? What should you read? ‘Adventure Time’ gets an awesome game! PLUS! Jonathan opens the FINAL issue of Nintendo Power! The sadness!
