Funny that on the same day we get some rather important news about the next Star Wars film, we also get the trailer for — AT LAST — the final installment in the seemingly never-ending film series of The Hobbit. Behold, for your viewing pleasure: The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies(The trailer, that is.)

As much as I tried to like The Hobbit films, I can’t. They’re an ugly mess. At least the equally messy X-Men movies have ounces of fun in them. But here it is at last. The last movie in what shouldn’t have been a trilogy in the first place. We’re almost done!

Side note: Only The Hobbit movies could get away with releasing a trailer just a little over a month before it actually hits theaters. This is a gigantic movie, a CGI fantasy onslaught with a $250 million budget, and only now we get the trailer? I get that they announced the films would be released consecutively so we probably should have penciled in these dates years ago, but still.

Will you be seeing this movie when it theaters? Of course you are, and you’ll hate yourself for it. But comment below!

Briefly: We’ve been huge fans of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films thus far, and Jackson has just revealed that the third film in the trilogy, originally titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, has just been retitled.

Here’s the explanation:

Inside Information…

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

Makes sense, doesn’t it? Are you looking forward to the trilogy’s completion? The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits theatres on December 17th!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Briefly: The first trailer for Traveller’s Tales’ Lego The Hobbit has just debuted online.

The game, which was revealed late last month, takes “players of all ages on an unforgettable interactive journey through the first two films in The Hobbit Trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.”

According to Traveller’s Tales’, “Players will follow Bilbo Baggins as he is recruited by the Wizard Gandalf to aid Thorin Oakenshield and his Company of Dwarves. Bilbo leaves the comforts of the Shire on a journey through Middle-earth to help the Dwarves reclaim their lost Kingdom of Erebor within the Lonely Mountain. Along the way, he is introduced to ravenous Trolls, dangerous Orcs and, of course, Gollum and his precious Ring. Players will utilize and combine the Dwarves’ unique abilities — often with hilarious results — to solve the most diverse Quests of any LEGO videogame to date.”

All of the Lego titles in the past have been an absolute blast, and I can’t wait to see how Middle Earth turns out. The announcement does leave a few questions unanswered however. First, is there a second game on its way to complete the story? And second, how does a Lego man wear a ring?

Take a look at the first trailer below, and let us know what you think! Lego The Hobbit will launch on PS Vita, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, 3DS, and Windows sometime in 2014!

UPDATE: Warner Bros. Interactive has officially announced Lego: The Hobbit for pretty much every console imaginable. Check out the press releae below.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group set off on a new journey to create LEGO® The Hobbit™
Join Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, Thorin Oakenshield and company on their quest to the Dwarven Kingdom in the next LEGO videogame coming 2014

London, UK – November 25, 2013 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games and The LEGO Group today announced LEGO ® The Hobbit™, the latest addition to the popular LEGO videogame series that brings to life the enthralling and legendary stories from Oscar ®-winning filmmaker Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit Trilogy. The game will be available in spring 2014 for the Xbox One all-in-one games and entertainment system and Xbox 360 games and entertainment systems from Microsoft, PlayStation®4 and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment systems and PlayStation®Vita handheld entertainment system., the Wii U™ system from Nintendo, the Nintendo 3DS™ hand-held system, as well as Windows PC and Mac.

LEGO The Hobbit will be based on the first two films of The Hobbit Trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and the upcoming The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, a production of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures (MGM), opening worldwide beginning December 13, 2013. Following the storyline of the first two films, LEGO The Hobbit will take players on quests throughout Middle-earth, joining Bilbo Baggins, Gandalf the Grey, and Thorin Oakenshield and Company in their exciting adventures toward the Dwarven Kingdom of Erebor.

“We are thrilled to depict the characters and environments of Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth in LEGO form with the LEGO The Hobbit videogame,” said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games. “Our family-friendly take on these thrilling adventures will have kids and parents playing and laughing together as they build and explore in LEGO Middle-earth.”

In LEGO The Hobbit, kids and families will be able to take on the form of their favorite Hobbit characters, including Bilbo, Gandalf, and all of the Dwarves: Thorin, Fíli, Kíli, Óin, Glóin, Dwalin, Balin Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Dori, Nori and Ori. Each has his own special – and quite hilarious – ability: For instance, Bombur can be used as a trampoline that enables his companions “belly-bounce” out of danger!

Players will visit key locations from the films, including Bag End, Bilbo’s Hobbit-hole in Hobbiton, trek through the treacherous High Pass over The Misty Mountains, and explore the depths of Goblin-town, Mirkwood and Rivendell. Along the way, players will solve countless puzzles, partake in Treasure Quests and battle with Orcs, Trolls and fouler things. They will also be able to mine for gems, discover loot from enemies, and craft powerful magical items or build immense new LEGO structures.

Briefly: Is there a Lego The Hobbit game incoming?

First of all, I sure as hell hope so; the Lego games are all fantastic (especially the just-released Lego Marvel Super Heroes), and a new title set in The Hobbit universe would be no different. Secondly, it looks bloody likely unless this leaked ad turns out to be fake.

Brickset member “sidersdd” posted the following photos, found on the back of the instructions of the 2014 The Hobbit sets.

We won’t know if it’s real until the sets officially release, but until then, bask in the leaked ad below, and let us know if you’re excited! We’ll be sure to let you know if this one goes official!

Headed to SDCC this year and planning to see an awesome panel for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug? Too bad… there won’t be one. Director Peter Jackson has just released a new production diary for the film, and it began with some seriously somber news: everyone involved with the picture is simply too busy to attend.

The diary continues, and is pretty much exactly what you’d expect: an awesome behind-the-scenes look at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This of course doesn’t make up for the fact that they won’t be at SDCC, but hey, you only have to wait five more months for the feature to release.

Watch the new production diary below, and let us know if you’re disappointed! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Just two days ago we showed you the fantastic first poster for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Now, it’s trailer time.

We’re just six months away from this second chapter’s release into theatres, and I couldn’t be more excited. I thought that the first film was a fantastically fun, beautiful trip back to Middle Earth, and it’ll be an absolute pleasure to jump back into this world.

The Desolation of Smaug teaser is a great first look at the film, and also give’s us a peek at the film’s titular character, Smaug. Don’t take my word for it, watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Were you a fan of the first film? Will you be seeing this one in 48FPS?

We’re just a few days away from the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and Warner Bros. has just revealed the first poster for the film.

It’s a simple image, and the tiny Hobbit in its centre really helps establish just how large the film is set to be. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug should be an incredible character, and I can’t wait to see this story continue.

Take a look at the poster below, and let us know what you think! The film’s first trailer is set to release this Tuesday, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug releases on December 13th!

Smaug

Just hours ago Peter Jackson held a special Q&A where they debuted the first footage from the second chapter in The Hobbit trilogy. Well, that footage has now popped up online. Check out the first clip from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug below!

The Hobbit is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer. The films star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in all three parts of the film project.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is set to hit theaters December 13, 2013

2012 was a strange year at the movies. While comic book movies, remakes and sequels continued their multiplex dominance, there was an entire wealth of indies, festival films and curiosities that made 2012 a pretty diverse year. Even now that it has come to an end, I can’t produce a confident list of 2012’s Best Films… and I saw almost everything (sorry, Cloud Atlas).

So instead of Best (as Matt Kelly provided after seeing only 15 films all year), here’s my list of ‘The Films I Enjoyed The Most of 2012;. It’s a wide-ranging, mixed list, appropriate for a pretty wide-ranging, mixed year. Yes, these are the ones that I got the most out of in my own selfish, film-loving way.

The List:

#1 – Life of Pi – Ang Lee has been one of my favorite filmmakers for about fifteen years. Strange that his one film that you’d think was made for me was the one I enjoyed the least (Hulk). Luckily, this year’s Life of Pi more than made up for it as my favorite moviegoing experience of the year. I bemoan most 3D films, as I should, because most 3D films look pretty bad and suffer from the 3D not being fully thought out. It becomes more of a distraction than attraction. Here, with Ang Lee’s careful integration of digital effects and visual care, is the best 3D film I’ve ever seen. Even in the quiet moments, the movie jumps with energy. And during the big visual crescendos the movie erupts. Life of Pi, both on the script and on the screen, is a complete celebration of storytelling. I loved every moment of it.

#2 – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Last January, I thought this movie would be on this list, and here it is. I just didn’t know that I’d try and experience it several times just to see it in different formats. Peter Jackson and company pulled off a Herculean task in bringing Middle Earth to the screen, both as The Hobbit and its integration into The Lord of the Rings. Yes, there was some awkward shoe-horning in the film (and where the hell did Radagast go!?!) but still, making a six-part film series of this level of quality can only be celebrated. I love being in Peter Jackson’s Middle Earth and am excited to return next year, regardless of frame rate.

#3 – The FP – I probably saw this movie more than any other film in 2012 and I’m proud that Geekscape was the product pusher through which many of you discovered it for yourselves. Of any film on this list, if The FP were a living, breathing person, it would be the one you’d most want to hang with. It’s equal parts everything you loved about the movies you grew up with plus the addition of video games and attitude mainlined right into its twisted brain.

#4 – The Raid: Redemption – Everyone’s lumping this film in with Dredd. I’m not going to do that. Beyond the tower assault storyline, and the large amount of violence, these movies are pretty different. Watching The Raid at SXSX in March was the loudest and craziest I’ve ever seen a theatrical audience. They were ready to rip the seats out of the Paramount Theater and start hitting each other with them. Unlike the bullet-charged explosiveness of Dredd, The Raid is a pretty hardcore martial arts film. The pain it inflicts is more personal and visceral than Dredd’s machine gun violence. In my interview with The Raid director Gareth Evans last spring, we spoke about how the silat fighting discipline was sort of the joke of the martial arts world before he filmed The Raid (and its predecessor Marantau). It says a lot about the film that no one is joking about it today. It’s just 100% bad-assery.

#5 – John Dies At The End – This is the craziest movie I saw this year. Of all the films from 2012, John Dies At The End is probably the one I think most Geekscape readers will appreciate the most. It’s equal parts science fiction, monster and occult film… but told through a narrative that is just as slapstick as it is intelligent. Really, John Dies At The End is almost impossible to describe, especially if I want to avoid spoiling it for you (I really do)! Every time that you think the movie is going in one direction or is about one specific thing, it pulls a complete 180 on you and pursues a wilder and more satisfying direction. And just when you think you can contain this movie, it spills out and becomes about something much larger than you can imagine. Really, the most impressive thing about this already impressive movie is its ability to articulate some pretty complex ideas about our own existence in a fun and exciting way. This is one destined for cult status among us geeks.

#6 – Les Miserables – This was an impressive production. Just on a technical level, Les Miserables had some of my favorite shots of any film I’d seen this year. Director Tom Hooper’s visual communication with an actor’s performance was second only to the work I saw in The Master or Holy Motors (which was probably the best performance I’ve seen this year). In many of the film’s one take masters, the focal depth on the actor’s performances was almost razor thin, leaving little room for the performer to move. Then they both start moving. It’s pretty impressive to watch both the performances of the actor’s and the camera. I’m not a big fan of musicals so it’s hard for them to make my list. Les Miserables did it pretty easily.

#7 – Dredd 3D – This is my favorite comic book movie of 2012. It didn’t have the loose plot threads and “what the fuck logic” of The Dark Knight Rises or the multiple personality complex of The Avengers first act that completely took me out of loving the movie the first time I saw it. And I’m not even going to elaborate on the heartbreak that was The Amazing Spider-Man for me. You can listen to the linked podcasts for those. What I will say is that Dredd 3D is the most faithful adaptation of the 2000AD source material that you’re ever going to see on-screen. Everything about the movie was spot on and completely drenched in kerosene from beginning to end. The non-stop violence. The broken world. The breakneck pace. Much like 2000AD, mainstream American audiences weren’t ready to accept this movie into their theaters. This isn’t Spider-Man. It isn’t Batman. And it isn’t The Avengers. It’s just pure adrenaline. I can’t wait to see it over and over.

#8 – Django Unchained – All of Quentin Tarantino’s movies are interesting… and this is one of his more interesting ones. I still don’t know if I 100% loved it. In my book, it does the same near-fatal thing that Inglourious Basterds does. It hits a dinner table scene during which the movie’s locomotive energy runs out of steam and is only re-injected by a high octane shoot out like an adrenaline needle stabbed through a breastbone. Sound familiar? It’s almost scary how structurally similar the last acts of these movies are and you can start at the Django scene around the dinner table and the underground cafe scene in Inglorious to start your study. Both involve characters carefully masking their identities but ultimately showing their hands. They both end in those identities being revealed and the main characters forced to move their plans into action and within twenty minutes a historical building full of people is being shot to shit with almost no survivors. And ultimately, the movie ends with an ambush by the movie’s lead on the movie’s biggest sellout, whether that be a turncoat Nazi or a race traitor of a house-slave. And that’s where Tarantino’s ability to make cinematic mix-tapes saves the day. In anyone else’s hands, this would all be painfully redundant. But these aren’t anyone else’s hands. While you often get the feeling while watching Tarantino’s films that you’ve heard these songs before, damn if they aren’t arranged and cranked up in the greatest possible way here. Bring on the director’s cut.

#9 – The Master – This is a film I actually enjoyed much more after it was over. It just stayed with me for a long time. The precise camera work, the performances, the riddle of the film’s subject, everything in this movie felt done with so much care that I couldn’t dismiss it upon leaving the theater. The Master makes you work to appreciate its message, and whether it be a study of the birth of Scientology, a condemnation of the audience’s passivity or an admission of P.T. Anderson’s own insecurities, there is a lot to explore here on several levels.

#10 – The Impossible – Can you love a movie simply for its sound design? I think you can… but luckily The Impossible is a whole lot more. The incredible sound design is just the first thing you experience. I know that Zero Dark Thirty and a few other movies I experienced this year did the whole “the audience will hear our movie before they see our movie” black screen intro… but none of them did it as effectively as the opening moments of The Impossible. It really sets the mood for a film whose most intense moments exist in 360 degrees and not just on screen in front of you. J.A. Bayona’s 2007 ghost film The Orphanage made me a fan, but here his camera work is so selective and claustrophobic that it really gives you a sense of helplessness against the rushing tide. This game of visual keep away and the way that the story is told a little out of sequence to keep information from us, combines with the immersive sound surrounding you to create a movie that is as visceral as it is inspiring. Much like Danny Boyle’s 127 Hours, I realized afterwards that I’d been holding my breathe for much of the movie. Combined with two perfect tight-rope performances by Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor (really, the entire family in the film), this is a movie that’s only going to get better as people discover it over time. From here on out, Bayona’s name should be spoken alongside the other elite Spanish speaking directors like Alejandro Iñárritu and Alfonso Cuarón (so really, it should be spoken among any elite directors period).

Close, But No Cigar (Not that we condone smoking…)

The following are movies that I loved this year, and they’re a pretty eclectic mix, but for some reason or another they stayed out of the Top 10. In a few hours I may look back and change them again… but by then we’ll be too deep into the new year. We can only move forward!

Alright! It’s an Unexpected Journey Into Darkness! My almost complete thoughts on ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”! Why 48 fps doesn’t bother me! Are there really pacing issues? What IS the Geek Movie Of The Year? Star Trek Into Darkness gets a new trailer and 9 minutes… but what does it mean!?! Getting into comics? What should you read? ‘Adventure Time’ gets an awesome game! PLUS! Jonathan opens the FINAL issue of Nintendo Power! The sadness!

Remember our friend Cooper Barnes? We featured him all the way back on Geekscape 246, where he and Jonathan spoke of everything from SNL Auditions to The Men’s Room and even Anthony Hemingway’s Red Tails. It’s a great episode with a very interesting guest, so if you haven’t heard it I implore you to do so!

Today Cooper and the folks from Turtle Island Comedy released a new parody music video based on the upcoming mega-hit The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The video is titled The Hobbit: An Unexpected Rap, and it’s wonderful, so check it out!

You can check out all of Frog Island’s other videos on YouTube (where else!?).

Well, Entertainment Weekly seems to have just skipped the second movie in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy and went straight into giving us a look at the third film. The still features Orlando Bloom as Legolas and Luke Evans as Bard The Bowman. This image definitely seems to confirm that Bard will have a much larger role in the films and that Legolas may be making more than just a cameo in the film.

The adventure follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers.

Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever…Gollum.

Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum’s “precious” ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities … A simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-earth in ways Bilbo cannot begin to know.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters December 14th.

Check out a new TV spot for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey containing a few brief shots giving us a first glimpse at the dragon Smaug, who will be voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, in the movie. Can you hold yourself together for two more weeks until the film hits theaters?

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey takes you back to middle earth on December 14th.

This must be absolutely nerve-wracking! Peter Jackson’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit is set to premiere in New Zealand this Wednesday, but the film isn’t even finished post production!

The team has less than 48 hours to complete the movie, so it’s a definite race against the clock. Everything of course, is detailed in the latest Hobbit video diary. Maybe if they didn’t spend so much time on these, the movie would be done (though they’re very cool and are a pleasure to watch)!

Since you’re probably not going to the premiere, you’ll be able to check out The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. Excited? Will you be seeing the movie in traditional 24fps, or are you lucky enough to live near a 48fps showing?

I can’t wait!

So, as if going to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by itself wasn’t enough already…you’re getting plenty of trailers attached to the movie. It’s already been revealed that Man Of Steel as well as Star Trek Into Darkness would have attached to the film. Oh, is that not enough for you? Well, let’s give you another reason.

It’s been revealed that the first trailer for James Mangold’s The Wolverine will also be attached to Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. So, have you gotten your tickets yet? Because you just might want to.

Well, it look’s like you’ll definitely want to get in line to see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in theaters next month. Not only will you get to see the trailer for Man Of Steel but you’ll finally see some footage from Paramount Pictures & J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness. Yesterday, it was revealed that fans will be able to see the first nine minutes of footage from the sequel, if they see The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in IMAX 3D. And now, it’s been revealed that a full-length theatrical trailer will be attached to non-IMAX screenings.

“TrekMovie has exclusively learned from multiple trusted sources that the first trailer for Star Trek Into Darkness will premiere with screenings of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. To be clear this Trek trailer is a completely different thing than the 9-minute preview of the beginning of the new movie which will be shown at IMAX screenings of the Hobbit film.”.

Star Trek Into Darkness hits theaters May 17, 2013.

I have to say, I’ve witnessed a lot of fantastic and original marketing this week. Yesterday we showed you the hilarious first part of a new marketing strategy for Far Cry 3, and today we get a very unexpected mash up of fantasy and reality.

Air New Zealand has partnered with WETA to produce a fun new air safety video for the airline. The video includes a cameo appearance by Sir Peter Jackson, as well as fan favourite Smeagol. It’s quite hilarious to see your standard air safety procedures acted out by folks straight out of Middle-earth.

The video lasts just a few minutes, and it’s definitely worth a watch. Also, air safety is important both on and off the plane, so get on it! Safety first!

Are you looking forward to The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey?

New Line today released the first television spot for the upcoming (and highly anticipated) first chapter of the Hobbit trilogy.

Peter Jackson of course returned to direct the film, which looks nothing short of fantastic at this point. As most of you know, the film will also be shown in a new 60 frames per second format in some theatres, which is nearly 3 times the FPS of a traditional film. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how the new format pans out.

Check out the spot below, and let us know what you think! The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens on December 15th.

Been awhile since you read The Hobbit? Here’s the synopsis for the film:

Stephen Colbert, the host of Comedy Central’s The Colbert Report, will be making a cameo appearance in Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. Colbert will not be appearing in the first film but will either appear in The Hobbit: Desolation Of Smaug or the third film The Hobbit: There And Back Again.

Colbert is well known to be a huge J.R.R. Tolkien and Lord Of The Rings fan. There is no word currently whether he will be a key character or just part of the background. Could he possibly be appearing as an elf in the film being that the comedian is fluent in elvish?

A press release issued earlier today by Warner Bros. has confirmed that the studios has plans to release an extended version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey next year. Come on, you really didn’t expect this one? The release is presumably to tie-in with the release of the second film in the trilogy, The Desolation Of Smaug, next year. I’m actually pretty sure you can expect extended cuts of all three films. Here’s an excerpt from the press release:

And finally, among the new films you can expect on Blu-ray and DVD in 2013 are The Wachowskis’ Cloud Atlas and – officially confirmed here for the first time – Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Extended Edition (Q4). One suspects a theatrical cut will be released earlier in 2013, following the home video release pattern of the previous Lord of the Rings films. And it’s reasonable to suspect that a Blu-ray 3D version will be forthcoming as well.

Last week, we learned that Peter Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, was interested in directing an episode of Doctor Who. The idea came up when Matt Smith expressed his interest in filming an episode in New Zealand with Jackson as the director:

“Let’s get Peter Jackson to direct one and go and make it in New Zealand. I would love to, I will campaign endlessly to come over and film there. There’s clearly a great film industry out there. It’s something I would be very interested in, it’s just whether we can persuade the producers to fly us all over.”

Upon hearing Smith’s interest, Jackson responded:

“I’m a huge Doctor Who fan, and I think Matt’s fantastic. Just name the time and place and I’ll be there!”

Since the initial talk of Jackson coming on board to direct an episode, the producers have been contemplating about whether or not the idea is feasible. Series 7 writer, Neil Cross, has spoken about potentially scripting a story that could “only be shot in New Zealand.” It’s a safe assumption that Jackson would probably be in the Director’s Chair.

Caroline Skinner, Executive Producer of Doctor Who, is just as keen on the idea:

“It is beyond wonderful that Peter is a fan of the show and it’s beyond flattering that he’d even think about it. I’m absolutely sure that we couldn’t afford him but, you know, we can always negotiate. His enthusiasm is just fantastic of course.”…”I’m with Matt [Smith]. Of course at some point we’d love to bring Doctor Who down under…it won’t be possible until at least a year after the 50th anniversary. We are already two-thirds of the way through the shoots of series 7 and although we filmed a couple of episodes abroad (Spain and the USA). I can confirm for the rest of series 7 we will be shooting entirely in Cardiff Bay.”…“It won’t be for a while but rest assured that we are thinking about it. The landscapes and just the world of New Zealand is of course phenomenal and many movies are set in your beautiful country. It is also an extremely long way from Cardiff Bay so the logistics and the sheer scale of moving Doctor Who to New Zealand is something that would take an awful lot of planning and time. It’s an enormous thing to move an entire production down there for an episode or two.”

Hopefully we see some Peter Jackson magic in the next series of Doctor Who. I’m thinking it will be a match made in heaven.

MGM/New Line today released a new poster for the upcoming The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The poster gives us a peek at a confident looking Bilbo Baggins (portrayed by Martin Freeman) and his weapon of choice, Sting.

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey is the first part of the Hobbit trilogy of films, and opens on December 14th.
