We’re now just six months away from the wildly anticipated release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and New Line Cinema has just given us our first look at Evangeline Lilly in the film.

The Lost actor portrays the Elven warrior Tauriel, who is a character created solely for the film adaptation in order to offset the predominantly male cast. Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard, and is “slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill”, according to Lilly. Sounds good to me.

Take a gander at Tauriel below, and let us know what you think! Are you Tolkien purists okay with the addition? The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Nine years after the release of The Return Of The King, Peter Jackson’s long awaited return to middle earth is here. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey takes place 60 years before The Fellowship Of The Ring and tells the story of Bilbo Baggins, which you met in that film, and how he came to possess the ring and his journey to help the dwarves reclaim the kingdom of Erebor, their former kingdom that has been taken over by the dragon Smaug.

The film may indeed be a slow start to this new trilogy, which should be expected when introducing middle-earth and the inhabitants to new viewers, but the team behind the film really do a great job of building up the momentum for the films to follow. Some may argue that the running time of An Unexpected Journey may run a bit long, but fans of Jackson’s middle earth will most likely love that the director added to the world that the books existed in which allowed him to expand upon the original story. After you get through the first part of the movie and Bilbo finally decides to join the group on their journey, the film really picks up and begins the journey that we want to see.

Of course the film is heavy on the special effects and you can definitely tell what advances have been made since the original middle-earth trilogy. The team behind the film does a fantastic job making orcs, goblins and everything in this universe seem tangible. The sets have great detail put into them and look beautiful from the very start of the film. Action scenes in the film are breathtaking and flow perfectly. Everything in the film is just as rich in detail as you’d come to expect from it, if not surpassing your expectations.

In regards to the cast, Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins is without a doubt the stand-out in the film. He plays the role perfectly and goes on to become to kind of hero that the audiences cheer for with ease. And just like Gandalf, we put our trust in him because he gives us courage. McKellen of course returns at the top of his game as the ever loved Gandalf, who always seems to disappear and return just at the right time. Andy Serkis reprises his role as Gollum and makes the character every bit as sad yet terrifying as we saw him in the last trilogy. Serkis is really at the top of his game this time around. Richard Armitage as Thorin makes a good impression. The rest of the cast is great but no one really stands out more than the rest.

While some may leave this film unsure of Jackson’s decision to stretch two films into a massive epic trilogy, you can definitely understand why he did. The scale of the adventure is huge and had he cut the film down it may have actually have seemed rushed. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is a great first installment to this new trilogy that will offer fans both new and old a quite satisfying journey. Intended to not only build the foundation for what’s to come as well as Peter Jackson’s original middle-earth trilogy and will leave you wanting to see the sequel The Desolation Of Smaug instantly, even though you just spent nearly three hours watching this film. It’s going to be a little bit before we can see how the entire story plays out but Peter Jackson’s return to middle-earth is a journey that is definitely worth taking.

Grade: 4/5

This must be absolutely nerve-wracking! Peter Jackson’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit is set to premiere in New Zealand this Wednesday, but the film isn’t even finished post production!

The team has less than 48 hours to complete the movie, so it’s a definite race against the clock. Everything of course, is detailed in the latest Hobbit video diary. Maybe if they didn’t spend so much time on these, the movie would be done (though they’re very cool and are a pleasure to watch)!

Since you’re probably not going to the premiere, you’ll be able to check out The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. Excited? Will you be seeing the movie in traditional 24fps, or are you lucky enough to live near a 48fps showing?

I can’t wait!

For those who’ve never read J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’, this trailer will really help set up the story of the upcoming film, the first in the trilogy from Peter Jackson and company. It’s a really strong trailer too, showing us a solid mix of story, baddies and humor. And as funny as it is, you get to see a bit more to Gandalf’s character than we even got in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ films. An Unexpected Journey releases on December 14 (only a few months!), followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013 and The Hobbit: There And Back Again on July 18, 2014. None of those dates are soon enough.

Today, Warner Bros. and MGM announced that the third part in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit adaptaion will officially be known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again. It will hit theaters on July 18th, 2014.

The first part of the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens December 14th and will be followed with next year’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on December 13th, 2013. All three films are being shot in 3D 48 frames-per-second. Additional filming for the third film will take place at the Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location in New Zealand.

I was a little iffy on The Hobbit being split into three films at first, but the closer it gets to opening the more I’m getting excited to return to Middle Earth not once but three times. When Fellowship of The Ring came out way back in 2001 I had absolutely zero interest in watching a movie that was close to three hours long and featured elves and orcs in it. I finally gave in and saw it when it came out on DVD and immediately knew I had been completely wrong about the movie. I have since become a huge fan of Middle Earth and have been eagerly awaiting my return visit to Middle Earth. From An Unexpected Journey through There and Back Again, I will be along for the ride.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Warner Bros. would only be releasing the 48 frames-per-second version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in select locations across North America. This news led to disappointment from numerous fans who do not live near major locations. This decision was made in order to be careful while judging the reaction to the presentation. Why might they do that you say? At CinemaCon earlier this year, the footage was shown at 48fps and definitely received quite mixed reactions from those that viewed it. However, there is some  good news here from Showblitz.  You will not have to pay extra to see this version of the film come December. Warner Bros. has expressed a desire for exhibitors not to charge even more on top of the already high 3D ticket price, with 3D already costing on average $3-$5 more than a 2D ticket, and the exhibitors have agreed. So, if you live near a theater that will be showing this version…you’re in luck! If not…I am sure you’re already planning a road trip.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey returns to middle-earth on December 14th.
