Briefly: We’ve been huge fans of Peter Jackson’s Hobbit films thus far, and Jackson has just revealed that the third film in the trilogy, originally titled The Hobbit: There and Back Again, has just been retitled.

Here’s the explanation:

Inside Information…

Our journey to make The Hobbit Trilogy has been in some ways like Bilbo’s own, with hidden paths revealing their secrets to us as we’ve gone along. “There and Back Again” felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced—after all, Bilbo has already arrived “there” in the “Desolation of Smaug”.

When we did the premiere trip late last year, I had a quiet conversation with the studio about the idea of revisiting the title. We decided to keep an open mind until a cut of the film was ready to look at. We reached that point last week, and after viewing the movie, we all agreed there is now one title that feels completely appropriate.

And so: “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” it is.

As Professor Tolkien intended, “There and Back Again” encompasses Bilbo’s entire adventure, so don’t be surprised if you see it used on a future box-set of all three movies.

Before then however, we have a film to finish, and much to share with you. It’s been a nice quiet time for us—Jabez and I happily editing away in a dark cave in Wellington—but those halcyon days are quickly coming to an end. It will soon be time to step into the light. Expect to see and hear much about The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies in the coming months.

And there’s also The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Extended Cut, which we’re in the process of finishing, with over 25 mins of new scenes, all scored with original music composed by Howard Shore.

It’ll be a fun year!

Makes sense, doesn’t it? Are you looking forward to the trilogy’s completion? The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies hits theatres on December 17th!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

As it appears, April may be a tough month to get through. With the calm before the May Summer Blockbuster storm currently taking place in theatres and almost all of the big-named 2013 titles already reaching DVD in March, there’s very little to get excited about this month. However, there are a few films being released on DVD and Video-On-Demand that should help ease this April lull, and here they are:

#1. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

mitty

I’ve always been up and down on Ben Stiller’s career body of work. And after the combination of a trailer that didn’t “grab” me and a critical bashing for his 2013 pet project, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, I must be honest and say expectations were rather low. Thankfully, Stiller didn’t disappoint and his long-awaited film proved to be one that the critics got wrong. Stiller directs and stars as Walter Mitty, a simple man who day dreams about going on adventures and whisking away the the girl of his dreams (played by Kristen Wiig). But when the negative for LIFE Magazine’s final cover goes missing, the opportunity presents itself for Walter to finally seek out a real-life adventure. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a charming and Underrated Film that’s easy to appreciate. (April 15th)

#2. August: Osage County

osage

Nominated for a pair of acting Oscars, August: Osage County isn’t a film for everyone. Based on a stage play of the same name, the film is short on action and heavy on dialogue. The audience is forced to watch closely as Weston family reconnects following the passing of their patriarch. Meryl Streep stars as Violet Weston, the unloving and drug-addicted mother that works her hardest to break down each and every member of the family by pointing out their flaws. This dark comedy is by no means an easy watch, but fans of strong dialogue and off-kilter humor may enjoy this rather odd tale of a family consumed with secrets. (April 8th)

#3. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

anchorman-2

It was difficult finding a third option to suggest for the month of April, so I decided to go with the comedy Anchorman 2. The first installment was an outlandish pioneer of sorts, but this sequel is an overextended and somewhat recycled shell of the original. Once again, Will Ferrell stars as the self-absorbed and arrogant Ron Burgundy who looks to reinvent himself after losing his job to his wife (sound familiar?). When the old team gets back together, Burgundy and company transform news from the informative platform it once was, to the ludicrous fluff it has become. There’s plenty of laugh-out-loud humor at the expense of a two-hour long senseless story that feels eerily similar to the original. (April 1st)

Honorable Mention: One film I’m yet to mention is the Best Picture Nominee Philomena (4/15) which captured the hearts of many audiences. I personally felt that the film was a little anti-climactic but I was clearly in the minority. Fans of the fantasy franchise The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (4/8) can rejoice and catch up with the latest installment’s DVD release. I wasn’t a fan of the unrealistic single mother drama Labor Day (4/29) starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, but I’ve met many others who enjoyed the film.

Every time Ian Kerner guests on a new Geekscape episode, it’s like a major event… just like the release of ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’! Ian and I sit down, break down Peter Jackson’s second film in The Hobbit trilogy and how it just feels good to be back among old (and new friends) in Middle Earth! Spoilers abound, obviously, as we get right to the thick of it, just like journeying into the wilds of Mirkwood! Also, we get Ian’s take on Sony’s announcement of ‘Venom’ and ‘Sinister Six’ films and we also talk about the Wachowski’s ‘Jupiter Ascending’ and Tom Cruise in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’!

Headed to SDCC this year and planning to see an awesome panel for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug? Too bad… there won’t be one. Director Peter Jackson has just released a new production diary for the film, and it began with some seriously somber news: everyone involved with the picture is simply too busy to attend.

The diary continues, and is pretty much exactly what you’d expect: an awesome behind-the-scenes look at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. This of course doesn’t make up for the fact that they won’t be at SDCC, but hey, you only have to wait five more months for the feature to release.

Watch the new production diary below, and let us know if you’re disappointed! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Just two days ago we showed you the fantastic first poster for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Now, it’s trailer time.

We’re just six months away from this second chapter’s release into theatres, and I couldn’t be more excited. I thought that the first film was a fantastically fun, beautiful trip back to Middle Earth, and it’ll be an absolute pleasure to jump back into this world.

The Desolation of Smaug teaser is a great first look at the film, and also give’s us a peek at the film’s titular character, Smaug. Don’t take my word for it, watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think! The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Were you a fan of the first film? Will you be seeing this one in 48FPS?

We’re just a few days away from the first trailer for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and Warner Bros. has just revealed the first poster for the film.

It’s a simple image, and the tiny Hobbit in its centre really helps establish just how large the film is set to be. Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug should be an incredible character, and I can’t wait to see this story continue.

Take a look at the poster below, and let us know what you think! The film’s first trailer is set to release this Tuesday, and The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug releases on December 13th!

Smaug

We’re now just six months away from the wildly anticipated release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, and New Line Cinema has just given us our first look at Evangeline Lilly in the film.

The Lost actor portrays the Elven warrior Tauriel, who is a character created solely for the film adaptation in order to offset the predominantly male cast. Tauriel is the head of the Elven Guard, and is “slightly reckless and totally ruthless and doesn’t hesitate to kill”, according to Lilly. Sounds good to me.

Take a gander at Tauriel below, and let us know what you think! Are you Tolkien purists okay with the addition? The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug hits theatres on December 13th!

Just hours ago Peter Jackson held a special Q&A where they debuted the first footage from the second chapter in The Hobbit trilogy. Well, that footage has now popped up online. Check out the first clip from The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug below!

The Hobbit is a film adaptation of the 1937 novel of the same name by J. R. R. Tolkien and prequel to The Lord of the Rings film trilogy. Jackson, director of The Lord of the Rings, returns as director of the film and also serves as producer and co-writer. The films star Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins and Richard Armitage, known for playing Lucas North in the BBC drama series Spooks, as Thorin Oakenshield. Several actors from Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings film trilogy will reprise their roles, including Ian McKellen, Andy Serkis, Hugo Weaving, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Elijah Wood, and Orlando Bloom. Additionally, composer Howard Shore, who wrote the score for The Lord of the Rings film trilogy, has confirmed his role in all three parts of the film project.

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug is set to hit theaters December 13, 2013

Today, Warner Bros. and MGM announced that the third part in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit adaptaion will officially be known as The Hobbit: There and Back Again. It will hit theaters on July 18th, 2014.

The first part of the trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey opens December 14th and will be followed with next year’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug on December 13th, 2013. All three films are being shot in 3D 48 frames-per-second. Additional filming for the third film will take place at the Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location in New Zealand.

I was a little iffy on The Hobbit being split into three films at first, but the closer it gets to opening the more I’m getting excited to return to Middle Earth not once but three times. When Fellowship of The Ring came out way back in 2001 I had absolutely zero interest in watching a movie that was close to three hours long and featured elves and orcs in it. I finally gave in and saw it when it came out on DVD and immediately knew I had been completely wrong about the movie. I have since become a huge fan of Middle Earth and have been eagerly awaiting my return visit to Middle Earth. From An Unexpected Journey through There and Back Again, I will be along for the ride.
