The last few years saw some great strides forward for various realms of equality, but more recently, a setback has left many feeling down about the state of gender equality. So, in an effort to remain optimistic about not just the world at large, but the world of art, here are five female leaders who knew how to get it done.

Yeah, we realize that we’re a little late for International Women’s Day, but… better late than never?

Buffy Summers – Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The titular heroine of Joss Whedon’s seminal show, Buffy was a direct response to Whedon’s desire to see the female victims in horror movies turn around and turn the tables on their attacker. What this subversive impulse brought us was an upbeat, funny teenager with the weight of the world placed squarely on her shoulders. Though she initially tried to escape her destiny, Buffy quickly rose to the challenge of being a strong leader in a world that saw her as little more than a girl. From preppy cheerleader to fearless general, Buffy grew up before our eyes, and helped buck the stereotype that beautiful girls need saving.

Laura Roslin – Battlestar Galactica: After the apocalyptic Cylon attack on the Colonies, Roslin remains the highest ranking surviving member of the Presidential line of succession, and is sworn in as President of the Twelve Colonies of Kobol. What makes Roslin so different to many of the women in power often seen in the media is that she didn’t have a clear political ambition. This unwanted ascension to the mantle of leader saw her grappling with her own instincts and qualities to reach her one goal: the survival of humanity.

Ellen Ripley – Aliens: After surviving the horror movie that was Alien, Ripley reluctantly joins a mission to investigate another potential infiltration. The second film in the franchise departs significantly from its predecessor, largely doing away with the horror motifs to contrast them with a war theme, casting Ripley as what many have hailed the first true action heroine. She continually comes up against male voices who seek to silence her, and is forced, in the end, to take matters into her own hands – once again for the good of all.

Leslie Knope – Parks and Recreation: In the everyday world of small town government, it might be difficult for some to imagine anyone kicking ass, but those people have clearly not encountered the sheer force of nature that is Pawnee’s Leslie Knope. From childhood, Leslie wanted to serve her country, and we see her doing that every single day. Despite her setbacks, including the small-minded town in which she lives, Leslie fights on to make the world better. What makes Leslie so special (well, one of the things), is her friendship with her boss, the hyper-masculine, anti-government Ron Swanson. Though their views stand at direct opposition, Leslie and Ron are always able to work together and remain friends – an optimistic model for how all leaders should behave.

Katniss Everdeen – The Hunger Games: Possibly the most influential heroine in recent memory, Katniss’ journey from peasant on society’s outer rim to revolutionary leader began when she volunteered as tribute for The Hunger Games to spare her younger sister from the same fate. As the world watched, Katniss defied the odds, and teamed up with her childhood admirer, Peta, to win the deadly competition. By subverting the ruling class’s expectations of her, Katniss became a marked woman – singled out for elimination by the government, and forced into a second Hunger Games. This act galvanized not only Katniss’ resolve, but thrust her into the spotlight as the face of a resistance movement to bring about revolution.

Briefly: Katniss Everdeen’s epic story is now less than a month away from its conclusion, and following the final trailer a few weeks back, Lionsgate has just debuted an action-packed new TV spot for the beyond-anticipated film.

As disappointed as I was in the first film in the series, I loved every second of Catching Fire, and though I enjoyed what I saw in Mockingjay‘s first chapter, the film felt (understandably) like an incomplete story.  As such, I can’t wait to see where things go, as I haven’t read a single word of the series of novels.

Briefly: Katniss Everdeen’s epic story is now barely a month away from its conclusion, and Lionsgate has just debuted the final, final trailer for the beyond-anticipated The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2.

This latest video is surprisingly powerful, and features our heroine making a desperate call for essentially, President Snow’s head.

I had a hunch that Lionsgate were going to cast Power Rangers out of Hunger Games. I knew it.

ComicBook has picked up that The Hunger Games‘ Sam Claflin (I don’t know who he is either) tweeted “Go go power rangers.” a few days ago. In that exact spelling and punctuation. He seems very enthused. The tweet has been deleted, but ComicBook saved it.

Without remembering a single second of him on screen, he’s probably their best option. Handsome, white, inoffensive, with a superhero build? He’s obviously being looked at for Jason, maybe Tommy, but I don’t think Tommy would be introduced in the first movie right away, would he? Also, I thought Lionsgate were looking for totally new, totally unknowns, and Sam’s got like 500K+ followers on Twitter. But if you’re not Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth, or Josh Hutcherson then who are you really, amirite?

Whatever. I’m game. So long as none of them are younger than me then I’m just fine.

Power Rangers, which will be directed by Dean Israelite with a screenplay by X-Men: First Class writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, is slated for Jan. 13, 2017, for some reason.

Briefly: Following the first poster from a few weeks back, Lionsgate has finally released the first trailer for this November’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2. The video features a decidedly angry Katniss giving a monologue agains Snow, rallying the people agains the Capitol, and plenty of other rebellion-esque activities.

I’ll admit it. I have zero interest, and am fairly ignorant when it comes to The Hunger Games franchise. So when I got word that the next up in the series, Mackingjay Part 2, had it’s first poster released I wasn’t to thrilled. Then I spotted the piece and I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised!

Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 2 Poster

The poster depicts a statue of President Snow completely destroyed with the Mockingjay logo adorning the wall behind it. This poster is a response to the one from last year for Part 1.

At the bottom of the poster is a URL that directs people to a registration form, telling them that a “Dawn is approaching, A new day is on the horizon. Be part of the next generation of Panem. Enlist today.”. We don’t know what the registration is for, but why not sign up?!

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2 hits theaters on November 20, 2015.

Briefly: We’re now less than one month away from seeing the first half of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and Lionsgate has debuted the final trailer for the highly anticipated film.

As disappointed as I was in the first film in the series, I loved every second of last year’s Catching Fire. As such, I can’t wait to see where this story goes, as I haven’t read a single word of the series of novels. I’ve heard mixed feelings of excitement and resentment from fans of the novels, but it’d be hard to deny how cool this trailer is.

The video features some pretty incredible new footage that we haven’t seen before. I really don’t want to give away too much, but you can take a look at the video below, and let us know if you’re excited! The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 hits theatres on November 21st!

The worldwide phenomenon of The Hunger Games continues to set the world on fire with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1, which finds Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) in District 13 after she literally shatters the games forever. Under the leadership of President Coin (Julianne Moore) and the advice of her trusted friends, Katniss spreads her wings as she fights to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) and a nation moved by her courage. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 is directed by Francis Lawrence from a screenplay by Danny Strong and Peter Craig and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the third in a trilogy written by Suzanne Collins that has over 65 million copies in print in the U.S. alone.

Briefly: We’re barely a month away from seeing the first half of The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, and Lionsgate has just debuted a new teaser for the film that takes us back to District 12.

The video shows an absolutely devastated District, and the vocal backings by Lorde make for a pretty emotional moment.

Briefly: Finally, finally, finally, the full trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingly – Part 1 has hit the web.

As if the teasers that we’ve seen so far weren’t intriguing enough, this trailer is totally bad-ass.  As disappointed as I was in the first film in the series, I loved every second of last year’s Catching Fire. As such, I can’t wait to see where this story goes., as I haven’t read a single word of the series. Briefly: A new teaser for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parthas just hit the web.

The teaser states that “Never have we been more unified as a nation. The Capitol and the districts are bound together in solidarity, striving to forge a stronger future. To commemorate this resolve, the Capitol mandates your viewing of President Snow’s Second Panem Address: “Unity.”

It doesn’t deliver exactly the message that Snow wants it to, as before too long, Jeffrey Wright’s Beetee takes over the transmission.

Briefly: The first teaser trailer for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part One has just hit the web, in the form of a Capitol Address from President Snow.

In the video, Snow offers a stark warning to those who go agains the Capitol, and delves into a speech about how important it is that all of Panem is united. After all, if the districts are the body, then the Capitol is the heart, and… I don’t think that anyone but the Capitol believes that.

Briefly: With less than one month to go until The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theatres, LionsGate has just debuted the final trailer for the anticipated sequel.

I wasn’t overly impressed (or impressed at all, really) with the first film in the series, but everything I’ve seen from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire has looked like a substantial improvement. I’m actually really looking forward to donning my Katniss costume on November 22nd, and jumping in line at my local cinema.

Just kidding about the costume…

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited! What did you think of last year’s The Hunger Games?

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Briefly: The highly anticipated sequel to last year’s The Hunger Games is just over a month away from theatres, and Entertainment Weekly has just got their hands on a trio of new stills from the film.

Briefly: During this year’s incredible San Diego Comic-Con, Lionsgate debuted a fantastic new trailer for the wildly anticipated The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Katniss and Peeta’s incredible victory has given people something that the capitol never wanted them to have: hope. As Katniss and Peeta are the source of this hope, they clearly need to be exterminated (and in a subtle and non-obvious way). I have to say that while I didn’t love (or even really like) the first Hunger Games film, Catching Fire appears to be a much more serious, much more adult picture, and based on this new preview, I’m now quite fascinated with how things may turn out.

Take a look at the new trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire below, and let us know what you think! The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Woody Harrelson, and plenty of others, and is set to hit theatres on November 22nd.

Briefly: The second film in the Hunger Games franchise is still months away from release, but Summit Entertainment is already hard at work securing talent for the next chapter.

Deadline reports that Lionsgate is courting Julianne Moore to join Mockingjay in the role of President Alma Coin. The role would cover both Mockingjay films, as Coin is a rather prominent character.

I haven’t read The Hunger Games series, so I have no idea how well Moore would fit in the role. She’s not yet signed either, so we’ll update you as soon as we get confirmation. Fans of the novels, would the casting fit? Is there anyone else you’d prefer to see play the president? Sound out below!

While I didn’t love (or even really like) The Hunger Games, its sequel is really beginning to look like one to watch out for. The first trailer for the film premiered back in April, and despite watching it with much skepticism, I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed.

Lionsgate has just revealed a new poster for the film, and it really helps solidify the fact that Katniss is a bad ass. Take a look at the image below, and let us know what you think! The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theatres on November 22nd! Those of you that have read the books, are you looking forward to the second film?

Along with a cool new clip for Iron Man 3, tonight’s MTV Movie Awards also featured the premiere of the first trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. A year after our victor’s return to their homes, President Snow forces them (and other champions) back for another round. So, I guess we can think of Catching Fire as a more violent Survivor: All Stars?

Lionsgate today launched a new campaign promoting the anticipated sequel to last year’s The Hunger Games. Capitol Couture is a faux-publication that offers us a first look at this year’s Capitol portraits. The images also look to make pretty clever character posters!

First up is Effie Trinket, portrayed by Elizabeth Banks. The site describes the image as “Head to heel in couture, Effie enchants in an exploding silhouette of chiffon and organza blooms. Never one to waver in her fashionable footwear, her heel-less boots are shod with a golden horse-shoe platform.”

Tripp Vinson is the producer of the brand new ‘Red Dawn’ remake, out in the U.S. Thanksgiving week. He took time from his busy pre-release week to sit down with me and talk about the film, why he wanted to take on the remake of a cult classic and the hurdles he had to cross to bring it to the screen! He also talks about casting talented actors-turned-megastars, his approach to an audience’s reaction and turning the entire Chinese Army into North Koreans! PLUS! What’s up for the ‘Baywatch’ remake and has John Milius contacted him about the remake of his beloved film?

Kevin Tancharoen, the director of the upcoming Mortal Kombat reboot, has just released a sizzle reel that he put together while pitching to Lionsgate to get the director spot for The Hunger Games. The film of the sizzle reel is definitely different from the version that we saw in theaters. It appears that Tancharoen would have gone for a darker film with more science-fiction elements than the Gary Ross version. Check out the sizzle reel below as well as an except from an interview he did with /Film.

/Film: It seems like a lot of upcoming directors are now putting together these video reels for their studio pitches. When did this start, and when did you discover this practice?

Tancheroen: The idea of a “pitch reel” has been around for awhile and is very common practice for any director. Trying to pitch a vision to a room full of people is always very difficult verbally. In the past two years, the pitch reel has significantly become more demanding since technology allows for people to make mini movies in their own homes. It’s almost expected for a director to show some visual materials, but the need to impress has become elevated. At first, it was just some concept art, some storyboards and possibly a treatment. Then the rip-o-matic (a visual reel using clips from other movies to portray a visual style) became really popular. I even know some directors who do a full animatic at their expense just to take into a meeting.

Check out the full interview here.

Over the past couple of weeks there has been a ton of cast announcements for the upcoming sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. But there has been one role that fans have been waiting to hear and it was announced today. Sam Claflin, who you probably know best from Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Snow White And The Hunstman, has been cast as Finnick!

Charismatic and clever, Finnick was a District 4 Hunger Games victor when he was fourteen. The character is best known for his proficiency with a trident, his skills as a swimmer, and his irresistible charm and good looks. With addition of Claflin as Finnick, the last major piece of the casting puzzle has fallen into place for the upcoming sequel. Claflin joins Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jena Malone, and Amanda Plummer as one of the main new additions to the franchise.

Deadline is reporting that Jena Malone (Sucker Punch) has been cast in the role of Johanna Mason in the sequel to The Hunger Games. Other actresses had been up for the role and Malone was first rumored to be in talks earlier in the month and has now officially signed on. Johanna Mason is the female victor of an unidentified Games from District 7. She was reaped for the third Quarter Quell. She was one of the youngest tributes in the Quarter Quell. She is the last living female victor of District 7, whose principal industry is lumber. In her original Hunger Games, Johanna pretended to be a weakling, feigning hunger and fatigue, when in reality she was sly and cunning. She is considered to be most psychologically scarred Quarter Quell participants.
