Briefly: This is certainly some news that I wasn’t expecting to read today: Ben Affleck is no longer directing the standalone Batman film.

Affleck, who co-wrote the films script with Geoff Johns, noted that “There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”

You’ll see Affleck’s next turn at Batman on November 17th in Justice League. I have to say, I’m a big fan of Affleck’s directing, and I’d have loved to see how an Affleck-led Batman film would have turned out.

Who would you like to see direct the feature? Be sure to sound out below.

We all knew Warner Bros. had reserved a space in Hall H’s busy schedule, but we didn’t know exactly what they were going to be showing, until now.

This year, Conan O’Brien will be moderating the two hour panel. Here’s what they’ve got planned in Hall H:

“Wonder Woman” stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Connie Nielsen and director Patty Jenkins.

“Suicide Squad” stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach and Karen Fukuhara, along with writer/director David Ayer.

Director Chris McKay and star Will Arnett from “The LEGO Batman Movie.”

Charlie Hunnam, who plays the title role in Guy Ritchie’s epic actioner “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures.

Stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts of Warner Bros.’ and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island.”

Director David Yates with stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell from “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

It’s a great line-up, but you may be scratching your head as to the lack of Justice League. Well, as there are every year inside of Hall H, Warner Bros. is bound to have some surprises in store. Ben Affleck has already stated he will be in attendance this year. So what can we expect? I’d say we can at least get a glimpse of some footage, along with an appearance of the full team on stage. You can find out more details about each film below:

“Wonder Woman”

“Wonder Woman” hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder & Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston. The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, “Wonder Woman.” The film is scheduled for release on June 2, 2017, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. www.wonderwomanfilm.com

“Suicide Squad”

From director David Ayer comes “Suicide Squad,” starring Oscar nominee Will Smith, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Oscar nominee Viola Davis. It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC, the film also stars Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, an Atlas Entertainment production, a film by David Ayer, “Suicide Squad.” The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. The film opens worldwide in 3D, and in 2D, and in select IMAX 3D theaters August 5, 2016. “Suicide Squad” is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language. www.suicidesquad.com

“The LEGO Batman Movie”

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO® Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Will Arnett reprises his starring role from “The LEGO Movie” as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis stars as The Joker; Michael Cera as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred. “The LEGO® Batman Movie” is directed by Chris McKay and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It is written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, with additional screenplay material by Jared Stern & John Whittington, based on LEGO Construction Toys, in association with LEGO System AS. Chris McKay also serves as an executive producer, alongside Ryan Harris. A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, “The LEGO Batman Movie” will open in theaters on February 10, 2017. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. www.LegoBatman.com

“Kong: Skull Island”

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island” reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

“Kong: Skull Island” stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Oscar winner Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell and Eugene Cordero. Vogt-Roberts directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly. “Kong: Skull Island” is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Present a Legendary Pictures Production, “Kong: Skull Island.” The film will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theatres, and IMAX March 10, 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”

Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to an original King Arthur epic, a sweeping fantasy action adventure starring Charlie Hunnam. Starring with Hunnam are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Oscar nominee Jude Law, and Eric Bana. Ritchie directs the film from a screenplay by Joby Harold and Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, story by Joby Harold. The film is produced by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Tory Tunnell, Lionel Wigram, Guy Ritchie and Steve Clark-Hall. David Dobkin and Bruce Berman are executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Weed Road/Safehouse Pictures Production, a Ritchie/Wigram Production. Slated for release on March 24, 2017, the film will be distributed in North America by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures. www.kingarthurmovie.com

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters. The film opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Starring with Redmayne are Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, Oscar winner Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, Carmen Ejogo, Jenn Murray, Faith Wood-Blagrove and Colin Farrell. The film marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, whose beloved Harry Potter books were adapted into the top-grossing film franchise of all time. Her script was inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by her character Newt Scamander. The film reunites a number of people from the “Harry Potter” features, including producers David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Warner Bros. Pictures has slated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for worldwide release in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX on November 18, 2016. www.fantasticbeasts.com

Sounds like a great time!

Briefly: Dang.

THR has just learned that Seth Grahame-Smith, author of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has stepped down as director of the 2018 Ezra Miller-starring The Flash film.

Seth parted ways with the project due to “creative differences,”… and I’m definitely interested in hearing some sort of elaboration on that at some point in time.

Grahame-Smith also wrote the script for the film (based on a treatment from The Lego Movie duo Chris Miller and Phil Lord), and while the film is now currently without a director, we’ll be sure to let you know when WB announces just who will take the project over.

The Flash is set to hit theatres on March 16th, 2018. Who would you like to see in the director’s chair? Be sure to sound out below!

TheFlash

Briefly: Love Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, or hate Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, DC’s expanded film universe is now on its way in full force, and clearly isn’t going anywhere.

It’s been rumoured for some time now, and was also pretty damned obvious, but Warner Bros. confirmed today at CinemaCon that they’re working on a standalone Batman flick with Ben Affleck.

Of course, nothing was revealed about the project, and Warner Bros. head Kevin Tsujihara simply confirmed that “We’re excited to be working with Ben Affleck on a standalone Batman film.”

Will Affleck be directing this one? Or will he just have the starring role? That remains to be seen, but in any case I definitely dug Affleck’s Bruce Wayne / Batman, and can’t wait to see him get back in that suit (and hopefully learn how he became so jaded).

How did you feel about Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice? Sound out below!

WARNING – SPOILERS AHEAD!

Now that you’ve had time to digest everything that was packed into that nearly three hour movie, let’s get to what matters:

WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS FLASH WARNING BRUCE ABOUT?!

Judging by how Batman V Superman ended, there’s a couple of different routes Snyder and co can take in bringing the Justice League to the big screen. If you’ve been reading my recaps on The Flash and other DCTV shows, then you’ll know that I like to start with the facts.

The Flash

Not too far into the film, Bruce is visited by Barry Allen, The Flash. During his brief visit, the Flash warns Bruce, saying, among other things, that “Lois is the key!” The Flash also pleaded with Bruce, shouting “Find us!” Bruce didn’t really have time to react as he was plastered in his chair. I mean, who wouldn’t be?

BRUCE, LISTEN TO ME

IT’S LOIS, LOIS LANE. SHE’S THE KEY

AM I TOO EARLY? I’M TOO EARLY

YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT HIM, YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT ABOUT HIM

FIND US, YOU HAVE TO FIND US

  • The Flash

The Flash was also not wearing his traditional costume and instead wore what looked like to be an armored suit. The helmet covering his face retracted, revealing that he was indeed wearing his traditional costume under the armored suit. For those who have seen the show and have read the comics, it’s no secret that the Flash has the ability to travel through time with use of the Speedforce. Still, we don’t exactly know how powerful this cinematic iteration of Barry Allen will be. For example, maybe he’s not fast enough to travel through time, yet.

theflashspeedforce

In any case, I think it’s clear that the armored suit wasn’t only for protection, but instead a sort of power boost for the Flash. Wrapping up the facts, we know the Flash travelled back in time to warn Bruce of a future where things aren’t going so great. In an effort to change the future, the Flash is hoping that Bruce shapes up and forms the Justice League.

Cyborg

Now that the facts surrounding Flash’s visit are out of the way, let’s go over Cyborg’s origin. In the file Bruce obtained from Lex, we saw a video of Cyborg’s creation, meaning by the time the events of Batman V Superman come around, Cyborg is already running around S.T.A.R. Labs. However, there’s something about Cyborg’s origin that some fans may have missed.

Motherbox

A Mother Box is essentially a super computer developed by the folks of New Genesis. A long time ago, a brutal war between the Old Gods ended in the creation of “The Fourth World.” This place came into existence separate from the universe as we know it. Since then, the two worlds that occupy that space have been locked in an eternal war. These two worlds are known as Apokolips and New Genesis. Mother Boxes are found on New Genesis and are sometimes referenced as living computers. They are comprised of an element called Element X and have also been known to sacrifice themselves for a greater cause.

cyborg boom tube

In the context of Batman v. Superman, it would appear that Dr. Stone used a Mother Box on his son and created Cyborg. This would render Cyborg to be a huge asset to the Justice League because of his knowledge and access to tech not of this world. This tech would also allow Cyborg to combat anyone from New Genesis and Apokolips, but more importantly, it would allow him to create and access Boom Tubes which brings us back to how Flash was able to reach Bruce.

As for how Dr. Stone was able to get a hold of a Mother Box, we don’t know. Perhaps Lex has already captured Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, and is keeping him somewhere secret. Miracle is the son of the ruler of New Genisis. After being traded to Darkseid as part of a peace treaty, Free escaped to Earth and has used the planet as a sort of hiding place from Darkseid. If this is the case, it could be that Lex was using him as a bargaining chip upon Darkseid’s arrival.

A Future Without the Justice League

Fans of The Flash may be wrong in thinking Barry simply ran so fast he traveled back in time. I think the right frame of thinking here is that Cyborg is responsible for opening the Boom Tube, and that, combined with Flash’s speed, allowed time travel to be possible. This duo may be the only heroes left in a future where the Justice League never formed. It would explain where the Flash got the armored suit from (Cyborg), and it would explain why the Flash went too far back in time. The calculations of time travel may be difficult, but it would also be increasingly difficult if both Cyborg and the Flash were working against the clock.

Darkseid

In this future without the League, there is a threat so large that Cyborg and Flash see no other alternative than to warn Bruce in the past with the hope that they can change the future. A threat this large brings only a few possibilities to mind.

darksied

At the end of Batman V Superman, Luthor says something along the lines of “the bell has been rung.” Something is coming. As far as alien threats go, and because a Mother Box may be involved, I would have to go with the theory that Darkseid is coming. Darkseid would be a perfect villain to set up the Justice League films (there are two announced so far).

Injustice

One common theme found in Batman V Superman is that Lois is Superman’s world. Nothing matters more than her, and Lex was able to take advantage of that weakness. I counted maybe four instances where Lois was built to be the driving force behind Superman’s good will and belief in humanity. Should Lois die, or should Superman be tricked into killing Lois, then we can expect Superman to go into a very dark place.

The Injustice storyline involves a timeline in which Superman becomes a ruthless tyrant, controlling the entire planet. This alternate timeline fits very well within the context of Bruce’s nightmare he had in the desert. If you noticed, all of Superman’s mercs were wearing “S” patches on their shoulders. Along with the mercs, Batman also encountered Parademons. In the comics, Parademons act as Darksied’s personal soldiers. They are genetically created in labratories on Apokolips from Human DNA. They are also usually sent in advance to planets Darkseid wishes to invade. The DC cinematic universe would go into a very dark place if it were to suggest Superman is using Human DNA on Earth to create an army.

injustice

The biggest supporting evidence behind this is The Flash saying “You were right, you’ve always been right about him.” This suggests that Batman was right in not trusting Superman for the majority of the film.

A Combination of Both

Who knows? Maybe Darkseid does arrive on Earth and Batman fails at protecting Lois. After defeating Darkseid, it would be entirely possible for Superman to become they tyrant we’ve seen in Injustice. Let’s also remember the Omega symbol that Bruce saw in his “Knightmare.” The Omega symbol is usually tied to Darkseid.

omega bvs

We also have to remember that it will take years to see how all this plays out. The best thing about all this is that DCU is just getting started.

After Grant Morrison’s announcement yesterday that he would be leaving DC it appears that Rob Liefeld may be next. Earlier today he tweeted:

After this caused a bit of buzz he tweeted the following:

Rumor is that if Liefeld can’t make the Hawkman or Grifter books work than they may be next for cancellation. Maybe he is returning to Image to focus on some of his own work? So, what do you think or do any of you care if he leaves the New 52?

Source: Twitter

Last week DC announced plans to move forward with a Justice League movie. With that came an announcement that they were also moving forward with ‘The Flash’, ‘Wonder Woman’, ‘Aquaman’ and ‘Suicide Squad’.

And with the recent Justice League fancast we did…I chose to do a fan-cast of my own for the DC movie that is moving forward that I am most excited for…

Suicide Squad is an anti-hero team of incarcerated supervillains who act as deniable assets for the United States government, undertaking high-risk black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. The group operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, currently under the command of Amanda Waller.

Now one thing about this is that i’m going to cast this movie ground in a bit of realism. I’m not going to use characters with superpowers exactly. I’m more so pursuing an ‘Expendables of the comic world’ casting here. I’ll also be focusing on more of a ‘New 52’ team versus a classic team. I know… I apologize to the Rick Flag fans.

Amanda Waller (Angela Bassett)

So first things first…we already have Waller established. No need to re-cast. This will establish some form of connection/continuity amongst the DC movies with Waller playing a Fury-like role.

Deadshot aka Floyd Lawton (Sam Worthington)

Sorry I can’t see him as Bruce Wayne myself. But I’ve been saying this one for awhile now… Worthington would play a perfect version of the moody ‘New 52’ Deadshot. Just imagine him playing the role like he played Marcus in ‘Terminator: Salvation’. Plus having his name to the film would definitely draw crowds.

Captain Boomerang aka George “Digger” Harkness (Guy Pearce)

So let’s add another fan-favorite actor to the mix here. And to top it off he’s Australian. Score.

Black Spider aka Eric Needham (Michael Jai White)

‘Suicide Squad’ definitely has to be an action movie. So we need actors who can pull off action. And to top it off he looks the part. Another perfect fit.

Harley Quinn aka Harleen Frances Quinzel (Kristen Bell)

Harley is definitely needed in a ‘Suicide Squad’ flick and we definitely need someone that can pull of that twisted evil/cute/hot/mentally unstable role and if you remember her as Elle on ‘Heroes’ I can definitely see this working.

Savant aka Brian Durlin (Liam Hemsworth)

So, Marvel had success with his brother Chris. Why can’t DC use Liam? His name alone will draw. And especially after ‘The Hunger Games’ and the upcoming ‘Expendables 2’ we know he can pull off action roles.

So, as I stated at the start of this article…i’m going after realism here. I think the concept of ‘Suicide Squad’ will work much better with realistic characters and thats why I chose the above. And I left Rick Flag out just because I think he’s kind of boring.

So, who would the Squad go toe to toe with? My pick would be personally villains who had escaped Belle Reve and Waller wants them shut down before they can open their mouths about the existence of Task Force X.

Count Vertigo (Paul Bettany)

Bettany has proven that he can do action films. But can he pull off the villain role? Id like to see.

Dr. Light (Robert Knepper)

Dr. Light is a rapist and creep. Have you ever seen Knepper on ‘Prison Break’? That combined with his role on ‘Heroes’? Perfection.

Bronze Tiger (Wesley Snipes. Yes…really.)

Yes. Wesley Snipes. Does he have the look? Check. Does he know martial arts? Check. Would he draw in crowds? Check. Do they both apparently like orange turtlenecks? Check.

Scandal Savage (Morena Baccarin)

Yes I know she’s a member of ‘Secret Six’ but I felt like mixing in another female in here for a super sexy showdown with Harley. You want to see that right? She has the look. Can she pull the role off? Not sure. But she has the look!

The above are solely my opinions. Feel free to agree or disagree in the box below.
