It’s the second day of Geekscape’s 12 Days of Switchmas and that means it’s my turn! For those just joining us, Nintendo is making a big announcement about their much anticipated new console, the Nintendo Switch, on January 12 and the writers here wanted to share in the excitement. We will be taking turns sharing our hopes, concerns, predictions and family recipes, all centered around the Switch. You can read Adam’s Day 1 predictions here!

My main concern actually centers around amiibo, specifically their implementation in upcoming games. In my opinion, the use of amiibo lately has been kind of lackluster and gave the feeling off being tacked on at the last minute. I would hate for them to become obsolete. We already know that the Switch is not backwards-compatible so that already limits some of their use right out of the gate.

My hope is that with this new console, developers will bring about a new renaissance for these accessories. It has been confirmed that Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild not only is compatible with several already-released amiibo but will also be bringing several new amiibo to the table as well. This points to a promising future for amiibo collectors but that is still just one title. It will take more that that to keep amiibo in demand and worthwhile. And while we are at it, maybe they can do something about the way their amiibo have been supplied, in small batches that are easy prey for scalpers. I swear, it was like stumbling onto a pot of gold when you found the amiibo you wanted in-stock. You might want to fix that, Nintendo.

As for predictions, I suspect that launch day for the Switch will have a larger library than the Wii or Wii U. It will have to, if Nintendo expects this thing to succeed. I believe that with a wider range of developers from all around the world throwing their support behind the system, we will see more third-party titles make it to the U.S. Not only that, I predict companies will be more adventurous in selecting which titles get localized. I have particularly high hopes for companies like LEVEL-5, Nippon Ichi Software, and ATLUS, all of whom have announced support for the console in some capacity.

Another prediction I have slightly mirrors what Adam said yesterday about Nintendo making a Launch Day announcement regarding the Virtual Console. I suspect that there will be some big update to the eShop that day that will effect the way our game purchases are recorded. Currently, our purchases are tied to our console but I believe that utilizing some sort of other system (perhaps finally putting My Nintendo to good use?), transferring purchases from one console to the other will be less painful. This ties into the Virtual Console because those purchases would ideally be transferable to the Switch.

If I had to make one crazy, probably-not-going-to-happen wish for this new generation, it would be that Nintendo upgrade the NFC chip in upcoming amiibo to include more than one save file on it. I understand that this isn’t exactly Switch-centric but it is relevant nonetheless. Now, I am not even sure that such a wish is even in the realm of possibility but this is a safe space for sharing our dreams, isn’t it? The reason I bring this issue up is that a good portion of the amiibo already have data saved to them and have I have run across this dilemma in the past. I can already foresee many a Smash Bros. player having a bit of a crisis over whether or not to delete their fighter profile on that Bowser amiibo that they lovingly trained.

And thus ends my portion for the 12 Days of Switchmas. Stay tuned tomorrow for another one of Geekscape crew’s take on the next Nintendo console. Merry Switchmas to all and to all a good night (or morning or afternoon)!

Well folks, this week might be the fabled week we’ve all been waiting for. For what?, you may ask?

According to analysts these past couple of months, tomorrow, September 13th, 2016, is apparently the fabled date where Nintendo will finally reveal their secret NX console to the world. While it might seem like a stretch, there are some recent events that have happened today that might just hint at something big for tomorrow. Let’s take a look shall we?

It all started this morning with a simple Snapchat message from Hack My Life host Kevin Pereira snapchatted a photo of Nintendo’s booth at Gamestop Expo with the following.

pereira-nintendo

Now, by itself, this doesn’t mean much. This could easily not be NX related and just be a tease of their booth or a possible new game announcement, however, he did make some suspicious tweets afterwards. The tweets were later deleted, but fast enough people like @Nibellion and @Mattrio23 were able to screen grab the tweets before they disappeared.

pereira-nx-twitter

For those who aren’t able to break the twitter code, it reads: “NX NEWS TOMORROW. MOBILE CONSOLE TWO IN ONE.” Now again, you could take this with a grain of salt and say that he’s just having a laugh by trolling everyone, but it could also hold ground. Remember the Nintendo World Championships from last year? Well, the host was none other than Pereira himself.

Another piece of evidence I was pointed to was a post on Neogaf by user ggx2ac that shows that nintendo will be presenting at Gamestop conference tomorrow around 8-9AM. What date have most analysts and rumors predicted the NX for? September 13th. If you’re interested in seeing the post, check it out here.

The last piece of evidence is very interesting. According to twitter user @NWPlayer123 Nintendo has updated their NX SDK. (Software Development Kit.) This shows that Nintendo is getting ready to make NX development public as well as a possible general reveal.

So, with all this info we’ve gotten today, Will we finally be seeing Nintendo’s big NX reveal tomorrow? Who knows. At this point it’s really impossible to predict what Nintendo is planning or when they’re planning it. Only time will tell, but for now, we wait. What do you think? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Briefly: So… we still don’t know much of anything about the darned thing, but at least we know when we can buy it (shut up and take my money).

Late last night (because Nintendo is Japanese, duh), the big N held its quarterly earnings call, and used that call to announce a couple of interesting tidbits about the next Nintendo console.

It won’t be launching this year as most seem to have been anticipating, but Nintendo revealed that the platform codenamed NX will launch globally in March of 2017. They’ve also reiterated that NX is “a brand-new concept,” but did not elaborate on what that concept was (could it be the handheld/home console hybrid that many have been speculating?).

Interestingly enough, apparently we won’t be seeing the NX at this year’s E3. The company has announced that the new Legend of Zelda title will be Nintendo’s E3 focus this year, and while Nintendo usually offers a plethora of announcements and playable titles at the expo, The Legend of Zelda will be the only playable title that Nintendo offers this year.

Just like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, when the as-yet untitled Zelda title launches in 2017, it’ll hit both the Wii U and NX, so regardless of whether or not you plan to pick up an NX at launch, you won’t be left in the dust when it comes to that beautiful new Zelda game.

How do you feel about the NX launch window? Are you planning to pick one up, or are you waiting to see exactly what Nintendo has to announce? Be sure to sound out below!

The Wii U eShop offers some of the best video games on the market today. Games like Runbow, Mutant Mudds, Pushmo, Gunman Clive HD Collection, and Shovel Knight expand an already impressive lineup of quality titles offered on Nintendo’s home and handheld consoles. Last December, Shin’en added to the list with FAST Racing Neo–a futuristic racing game which has received critical acclaim from numerous media outlets.

JC got a chance to ask Shin’en a few questions about their latest game, their influences, and what fans can expect in the future.

Geekscape: First off, congratulations on the overwhelming positive reaction for
FAST Racing Neo. From concept art, development, to seeing the game hit
#1 on the Nintendo Wii U eShop—how satisfying is it to see a game
received so well?

Shin’en: We are very happy how the game turned out and about the players reactions. Many of our previous titles also topped the WiiWare or eShop charts but no game sold so FAST 🙂 So from the business side, we are very satisfied. From the development side we are also very pleased.

We never worked so long and hard on a single game, but in the end everything came really nicely together!

Geekscape: What were some key areas the team wanted to focus on in FAST Racing Neo
that perhaps weren’t implemented or explored fully in FAST Racing League?

Shin’en: Our main focus was to make the game very accessible from the beginning while still being a good challenge. We think we really nailed that part. Another big topic was the feeling of speed. We almost needed a year to find the perfect balance to make the players believe that they never played any racing game that fast, while still being fully in control. That was a big challenge.

screenshot23

Geekscape: FAST Racing Neo looks and plays like a beautiful marriage between F-Zero GX and Ikaruga–while still being able to maintain its own identity.

What were some of your favorite racing games growing up, and how much of
an influence, if any, did those games have on the FAST series?

Shin’en: Our favorite racing game is still Wave Race 64. It has a perfect blend of great gameplay, great tech and marvelous audio. Of course, we played all racing games from the past when we started with FAST Racing Neo, but we learned quickly we would need to do things very differently.

Wave_Race_64_(NA)

So in terms of physics and vehicle handling, I don’t think we have much in common with previous sci-fi racers. Also graphically, besides some obvious nods, we think FAST does really stand on its own.

Geekscape: We here at Geekscape are extremely competitive when it comes to racing games. Have you held any kind of ‘friendly’ tournaments at work, and if so, who is the best Fast Racing NEO player among you?

We played almost every day a tournament. Peter, who did the game testing, is usually on top of the pack followed by Martin. Bernhard is also quite good, although he still refuses to use the ‘leaning’ controls 🙂

screenshot24

Geekscape: What can we look forward to from Shin’en in 2016?

Our first release is planned for January 2016. It’s an update for FAST Racing Neo which will add new features and a much improved and stable online experience. We also really look out for Nintendo NX.

The internet is buzzing, due to predictions and statements made by Nomura Securities analyst Junko Yamamura.  These statements  (via Barron’s Asia), point towards a “concept reveal” sometime between March and May, a full console reveal during E3, and even a console release in time for the holiday season of 2016.  While this is a possibility, it is no guarantee that we will see a 2016 console release, although other similar news have surfaced to strengthen this theory, such as a report that claims Nintendo will ship 20 million NX units in 2016.

The 3DS was initially launched in 2011, and Nintendo most commonly follows a five to six year console cycle between new systems, so a 2016 or 2017 launch year for its successor would make a lot of sense.  The Wii U was launched in 2012, so although a refresh on that console is unlikely, it isn’t entirely possible since there has been some speculation that it failed to meet the bar that its predecessor, the Wii, has set.  If there would be a “concept reveal”, my best guess it would be through a Nintendo Direct, which is Nintendo’s dedicated news platform for streaming news to gamers through video.  An E3 reveal for the console would also make sense, because E3 is the industry standard outlet for major gaming news, including, but not limited to, console reveals.  I think that a 2016 launch is still a bit of a stretch, but if the other two come true, it may very well be possible.

We have already an article on a NX patent utilizing “additional computing devices“, so we are excited by the potential new ways of gaming it could bring to the table!  Do you think that we will see this exciting new console in 2016?  Please let us know in the comments!

During last month’s E3, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said the public wouldn’t hear anything concerning the Nintendo NX until E3 2016. While fans may have to wait 11 months until they get an official reveal of Nintendo’s next platform, we may have learned what games may be coming to the NX.

DragonQuestX_2

During the Square Enix live stream event this morning, Dragon Quest XI was announced for both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. While the PS4 version will obviously boast the better graphics (it’s built on the Unreal Engine), the 3DS version will have full 3D graphics on the top screen, while the bottom screen showcases retro Dragon Quest graphics–resembling those of the earliest games in the series. Before the end of the presentation, Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest X were coming to Nintendo NX. It didn’t take long for the news to appear on gaming sites all over the web, and it caused Square Enix to back peddle just a bit.

Earlier this afternoon, Square Enix provided IGN with a statement, clarifying that Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI were under consideration and had no further information at the moment.

With the confirmation/non-confirmation of Dragon Quest for Nintendo’s next platform, what other franchises would you want to see on the NX?
