We all knew it was coming. There were plenty of rumors floating around about the legendary developers status at the company, but on October 9th Hideo Kojima left the studio he had worked at for almost 30 years for the last time.

In a writeup by The New Yorker, and insider at the company was in attendance at a going away ceremony for the legend. He said that the overall air of the event was “a rather cheerful but also emotional goodbye.”. He went on to mention the Konami’s President Hideki Hayakawa and it’s CEO Sadaaki Kaneyoshi were not in attendance. Not really a surprise is it?

The article goes on to talk about WHY Konami is doing what it’s doing. Nothing knew if you’re an avid gamer, but the long and the short of it is this: Mobile games are cheap to make, and micro transactions are insanely popular. With the first year of Konami’s mobile game “Dragon Collection” a boost of profits in the neighborhood of 80%! What would you do if you were Konami and you were looking at all that juicy Yen?

Kojima’s non-compete clause is up in December, and he becomes a free agent. You KNOW the entire industry will be clamoring to hire the developer.

Where would YOU like to see Kojima go? What company would utilize his abilities the most?

UPDATE

As of the writing of this piece, Kotaku published a translated article from TokyoSports (which directly quotes Gamespot)[There is a lot of fucking quoting and referencing going on with this whole deal.] that Konami official are directly refuting the statement that Kojima is done with the company.

Currently, Kojima and the development team are finished developing Metal Gear Solid V and are taking a long time off from work. (When asked about the going away party their response was) We’re not sure what kind of thing this was.

So maybe Kojima is still sticking around with Konami? The “vacation” line can be speculated that this is just a long gradual fadeout, as the company has a habit of taking employees and redeploying them at other posts, such as janitors or assembly line workers.

Guess we’ll know for sure in November if Kojima is working over at Nintendo.

UPDATE

This picture recently surfaced from Twitter. Looks like a going away party to me!

During Spike’s VGAs there was a MYSTERIOUS trailer played for a new game called Phantom Pain, by a brand new and unheard of Moby Dick Studio. Well a few intrepid online sleuths have put the puzzle together and the evidence leads to it being the newest Metal Gear Solid game. Lets take a look at the trailer.

Pretty spooky. When I first watched it I pegged it for another horror shooter like F.E.A.R, but while doing some research I found some interesting clues. Someone pointed out online that the WhoIs lookup for the brand new and unknown Swedish game studio has its domain registered by a French woman living in Gibraltar. If you take a look at the WhoIs list you can see most of the registration is in French.

Another piece of the puzzle is that during the VGAs, Forbes reported that “Phantom Pain” isn’t even the right title and it is meant as a misdirection, and flat out say it is Kojima’s game. The CEO of Moby Dick Studio is named Joakim Mogren, if you pull a D’avinvi Code on that name, the first name spells out “Kojima”.

The internet is pretty much settled on this being Metal Gear Solid 5, and not Ground Zeroes, but a shot from the Ground Zeroes promotional images is an almost exact facial match.

But the real smoking gun is this image below. If you look at the Phantom Pain banner VERY closely you can see small faint letters and when you fill them out in MS-Paint you get this.

Coming this fall, Konami is going to be releasing a remastered version of both Zone of the Enders AND Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner!

Zone of the Enders, for those who don’t know, was a 2001 PS2 game developed by Kojima Productions. Many people bought it because it had a demo for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but marketing tactics aside, the gameplay was fantastic, the story was surprisingly decent, and piloting a giant robot that destroys other giant robots was as natural and easy as jumping on a goomba in Super Mario Brothers. ZOE: The 2nd Runner built on that with improved gameplay, an epic story, graphics that are still completely mind-blowing to this day, and a ton of extras unlocked once you beat the main game that will keep you coming back for more.

These games are beloved and hard to find, especially ‘The 2nd Runner’. Now they will be available outside of the PS2 and will see a release on both the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Tomoyuki Tsuboi, President of Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc, had this to say regarding the re-release:

We are looking forward to bringing the legendary Zone of the Enders series to fans old and new in a high definition format with the Zone of Enders HD Collection.

As of now, there is no information regarding extras or updates in the game aside from the graphics. Personally, I’m hoping that with ‘The 2nd Runner’, we get all the content that was included in the special edition that was only available in Japan, but even a straight port with remastered graphics will still make for a great experience.
