Ever since its release last year, rumors have been abuzz that Final Fantasy XV would be making its way to Nintendo’s darling little hybrid system.

About a day ago during a Gamescom livestream on Twitch, XV Producer Hajime Tabata hinted that on top of the Windows and Mobile versions of XV that they are also working on a console version that rhymes with Twitch. No, it’s not the Xbox One Xitch, but good guess. If done right, FFXV on Switch could be incredibly cool and addicting. Would you be interested in double dipping in the game if it was brought to Switch? Check out the video mentioned above right here!

 

Briefly: Last Summer, Josh asked just what the hell was wrong with Konami after the reveal of Metal Gear Survive, a WTF-inducing Solid Snake and friends fighting zombies game that Hideo Kojima clearly had nothing to do with.

We’ve seen little else from the title since its reveal at GamesCom 2016, to the point where we’d almost forgotten that it even existed (leaving the world a slightly brighter place). It turns out, however, that the title is playable on the show floor amidst the giant lines at this year’s ongoing E3, but at this point the game will not be hitting your platform of choice until next year.p

Polygon learned earlier today that the development team requires a little more time to polish the game, and thus the title has been “pushed back a few months.” Naturally, Metal Gear games and delays are no stranger to one another — this game’s existence at all however, remains a mystery to all of us. What would it have been like to be a fly on the wall when this concept came up?

The big news coming out of Gamescom this morning seems to be the reveal of Metal Gear Survive, the first Kojima-less Metal Gear title after the very public split between the famed creator and his overseers at Konami. A quick look at the trailer leaves no question as to why the reaction so far seems to range between “lol Konami”, and “something something franchise killer”. We all know that Kojima was known for introducing some ridiculous scenarios into his games, but I would imagine that even he would laugh at the concept of taking the survivors of the attack on Mother Base and inexplicably sucking them into an inter-dimensional portal, placing them in a post apocalyptic wasteland where they’re forced to fight hordes of zombies. Yes, that’s the premise.

Currently sitting at nearly 30,000 dislikes on IGN’s YouTube page in less than 12 hours, it’s safe to say that after thoroughly killing any goodwill the company had with their fans courtesy of crowd pleasing moves like cancelling Silent Hills, removing the PT demo from the PlayStation Store, preventing Kojima from accepting an award he earned for his work, and turning some of their beloved franchises into pachinko machines rather than produce new games, this latest reveal isn’t going to win back anybody. Almost approaching parody levels of absurdity, it’s hard to imagine how anyone would have green lit a game in a franchise as big as this and take it in such a wildly different direction. But when we stop and think about how not only Konami, but the entertainment industry as a whole handles the concept of audience demand, should we really be surprised?

Oh, what could have been…

Watching this trailer for the first time, it felt like a checklist of what an out of touch executive would do when conceptualizing a game. Let’s see, zombies are still popular, right? Mad Max and Fallout are big! Why not place it in a barren, desolate space? Let’s have a group of no-nonsense soldiers take them down like it’s no big deal while we’re at it. But most importantly, new IP’s are way too risky. I know! Let’s slap Metal Gear Solid on the title and watch it fly off the shelves! We can even reuse assets to save some money while recouping cash on the money sink that was MGS V!

I mean, what could go wrong?

The worst part is that the people in charge will never look in the mirror and realize that they’re the reason for these failures, and we see it time and time again across the entertainment spectrum. Nintendo is going through a similar issue with Metroid Prime: Federation Force, a game that plays just fine on its own. But thanks to their own tone def assertion that making it a Metroid game would build enthusiasm is likely going to ensure that the promising multiplayer title will be dead on arrival. Why? Because the company decided to take a franchise that hasn’t seen a new game since the widely panned Other M in 2010, one that they’ve teased sequels to for years thanks to the rumored Metroid Dread, only to never deliver. What we’re left with is a light hearted spin-off that has next to nothing in common with its main games. While drastically different side games aren’t a bad thing on their own, how can you dangle a carrot in front of your fan base for so long, then be surprised at the backlash when you bait-and-switch them?

As many gamers will tell you, Nintendo has a history of making head scratching decisions such as this, ranging from self fulfilling prophecies like forcing fans to scratch and claw for “risky” games like Fatal Frame, only to run next to no advertisement for them, to the Villager amiibo being among a set of high demand figures that they didn’t deem popular enough to take away shelf space from Mario and Link, creating a huge scalper market for the figurines. This is despite the fact that Animal Crossing: New Leaf is currently sitting at number six on the list of best selling 3DS games of all time, (and might have been higher if they didn’t include each version of Pokemon as one total). You know what sold nearly six million fewer copies? Zelda. I’m no CEO, but this is *THEIR* data! To Nintendo’s credit, they finally restocked it exclusively at Toys R Us in the States about a year later, with a whole line of Animal Crossing figures and cards showing that they finally acknowledged what was right in front of them. The only way they could realistically claim that they didn’t anticipate demand is if they don’t read their own financial reports like the rest of us.

This lack of foresight and these reactionary decisions aren’t isolated to the gaming industry either. I’m sure we don’t need to be reminded of how the Suicide Squad film was allegedly re-shot to include more humor after the success of Deadpool. An ironic prospect when you remember that Fox’s project had its own set of challenges when its creators had to fight for the film to be true to the source material with an R rated action flick, reportedly due to studios refusing to believe that a violent, vulgar superhero could sell tickets. Even Marvel, as great as they have been in recent years, isn’t immune to this disconnect. When Sony’s email leak revealed that CEO Ike Perlmutter was seemingly supplying “proof” that female led superhero movies are traditionally failures, he cites Catwoman and Electra, apparently placing the blame on them featuring female leads while ignoring that these were both critically panned. On the flip side, based on the advertisements, the Ghostbusters reboot sold itself almost entirely on the fact that it was led by an all female team, as opposed to the merits of the film itself. Turns out, that wasn’t enough.

I’m sure this had more to do with Electra‘s failure than Jennifer Garner’s vagina.

The examples are seemingly endless, from Capcom’s storied history to Lego Dimensions and the recent reveal that Supergirl will be exclusive to reissues of last year’s starter pack, leaving early adopters in the dust. But will these companies learn their lesson? Probably not. It’s much easier to fail when your job security doesn’t rely on making good decisions, especially when you can pass the blame down to your subordinates. In Konami’s case, I’m sure they see Metal Gear Survive as their saving grace. The game that will prove that they don’t need Kojima to carry on with their biggest franchise. It has everything that’s popular mashed together, and the tens of thousands of dislikes will be attributed to being from “haters” and “trolls” who will buy the game anyway. And naturally, when none of this happens and Survive ends up flopping, the obvious takeaway will be that fans have lost interest in the Metal Gear franchise. Not that their decision makers have no idea what their doing and are out of touch.

Briefly: Quantum Break is the reason that I bought an Xbox One (well, that I bought an Xbox One for the second time).

Remedy Entertainment’s previous endeavor, Alan Wake, was one of my favourite titles of last-generation, and as such it would be impossible for me to ignore such a striking, unique-looking title.

Today, Microsoft debuted a brand-new, awesome trailer for the title, and also revealed some other exciting Quantum Break news. First up, trailer time:

Well, the Quantum Break package just got better. Every copy of Quantum Break for Xbox One will come with a full-game download for Alan Wake for Xbox 360, plus its two add-on packs, The Signal and The Writer. Better yet, pre-order the title, and you’ll also get a copy of Alan Wake: American Nightmare.

Microsoft has also revealed that the game will launch on Windows 10 day and date with the Xbox One version of the title. The company notes that they want customers to “play the games they want with the people they want on the devices they want,” so pre-ordering the title will also net you a free Windows 10 version of the anticipated title.

Of course, for those of you that haven’t yet jumped on the Xbox One bandwagon, Microsoft will be offering a new Xbox One bundle,  featuring a 500GB Cirrus White console and matching wireless controller, a full-game download of Quantum Break and a full-game download of Alan Wake accompanied by The Signal and The Writer add-on packs.

Quantum Break aims to offer an extremely “unique experience; one part hard-hitting video game, one part thrilling live action show, featuring a stellar cast, including Shawn Ashmore (“X-Men”) as the hero Jack Joyce, Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones”) as his nemesis Paul Serene and Dominic Monaghan (“Lord of the Rings”) as Jack’s genius brother, William. It’s been a long time coming, but Remedy’s next game, Quantum Break, finally received some game play footage at Gamescom 2015. Originally revealed alongside the Xbox One itself, information on the upcoming exclusive from the team behind Max Payne and Alan Wake was hard to come by aside from a few trailers. Now that it’s finally been shown, it’s safe to say that they were hard at work, attempting to blur the line between television and video games to create an action packed cinematic experience.

Quantum Break is split into two halves. The primary section of the game is a third person shooter, allowing the team to use their much lauded time manipulating abilities to take advantage of the field, (and their enemies.) When stages are completed, full episodes of what are supposed to act as a TV show play, expanding on the world, story and characters. Bringing in a star studded cast led by Shawn Ashmore, Dominic Monaghan and Aidan Gillen amongst others, it’s clear that the team is taking this portion of the game seriously. But as hit or miss as games with a cinematic focus have been as of late, should we?

Still, Remedy has a near spotless track record, and after so much time has passed since their last game was released, I can’t help but be excited for their next endeavor, (not to mention the action looks fast paced and creative.) But enough about me, you be the judge! Tell us what your impressions are, and keep an eye out as Quantum Break approaches its late 2015 release.

At first glance, Platinum Games’ upcoming Xbox One exclusive, Scalebound, looked like it was ripped straight out of the Monster Hunter playbook. When you think of a game where you run around big environments fighting towering dragons, how could you think otherwise? Once the first extended look at the game was released at GamesCom however, it’s clear that Hideki Kamiya’s upcoming title was a completely different beast.

From the five minutes of game play footage, it’s obvious that Scalebound looks incredible. Surprisingly, the player was fighting alongside a dragon rather than hunting it, exploring the gorgeous environments while fighting off enemies. Rather than being confronted by intimidating beasts, hordes of humans did their best to take down both the player and his dragon. With HP numbers popping up throughout the screen as damage is taken from both sides, it’s clear that RPG elements play a bigger role than what we had thought.

That’s not to say that you won’t be hunting monsters though, because there were a few shown off during the trailer as well. Fighting alongside your partner, the fighter was switching between sword attacks, long range bows, and items picked up on the field. Fighting around the two dragons clashing looked thrilling, which can only be improved by the co-op that the final version is promising.

From these early impressions, it’s looking like Scalebound might be one of the Xbox One’s highlights, but did we expect anything less from Platinum? Check out the trailer below and give us your thoughts!

As anyone who owns an Xbox One or PS4 can tell you, that 500 GB internal hard drive doesn’t take you very far. In this age of mandatory installs, 50 GB updates to fix titles that launch in a broken state, free games every month with each online service, or the plethora of DLC that fills the online marketplaces, it won’t be long until you’ll need some more space. While the PS4 is still behind on the external hard drive front, the Xbox One allows most 3.0 USB drives to plug into its USB ports.

Jumping on this growing need for gamers, Seagate and Microsoft announced at Gamescom that the two companies are teaming up to deliver an Xbox branded hard drive. Named the Seagate Game Drive, the green and black casing immediately identifies it as part of the Xbox brand, with a small, single cord storage device. At 2TB, Seagate is promising that you’ll never have to delete games again, holding a minimum of 50 games at a time.

Retailing at $109.99 and sold at nearly every major electronics outlet, Xbox owners shouldn’t have too much trouble finding it at their favorite shop. Xbox One owners, will you be plugging in this drive when your data starts running low? Keep an eye out for a full review in the coming days!

Just in time for Gamescom, Capcom has revealed one more world warrior heading to Street Fighter V. Vega, the Spanish ninja who relies on his speed, power and long reaching claws to punish his opponents, returns with plenty of new tricks to keep the masked fighter fresh.

Every previous iteration of the Street Fighter II boss has relied on his claws for attacks, extending his reach and improving his strength while equipped. If he took enough damage, his claws would get knocked off, putting him at a disadvantage until he was able to recover them. This time around, that weakness has the potential to become a strength, since Vega now has two attack stances. His standard claw stance relies on many of the tricks we’ve expected from him for over 20 years, with fast, hard hitting attacks that are designed to confuse opponents. However, losing his claws acts as a second stance, granting him a series of new command grabs to confuse opponents further. Top this off with his V-Trigger, the Bloody Kiss, and Vega can now teleport behind enemies and slice them up with the toss of a rose. Oh, but if you are attached to that claw style, you better be careful, since claws can no longer be picked up once they’re dropped.

Like Ken before him, it’s easy to see that Vega is getting a pretty big overhaul, and not just because his alternate matador costume is now his default. He sounds like he’ll be a completely different beast on the battlefield, which is sure to excite new and old fans alike.

It’s still hard to believe that yesterday’s news could possibly be true, but alas, a new Silent Hill game is finally in development, it stars Norman Reedus, and it’s a collaboration between master filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and master gamemaker Hideo Kojima.

Yep, the dude that created Metal Gear Solid (and who I met at Comic-Con last year), and the dude who directed the Hellboy series Pan’s Labyrinth.

The way that the game was announced is equally as incredible. At yesterday’s Gamescom press conference, Sony debuted a new independent horror game called P.T., which it turns out was a fake game by a developer that doesn’t exist, and it was actually a ruse by Kojima and co. to build hype for Silent Hills. Who the heck announces a game like that?

And build hype it did. A playable P.T. demo hit the Playstation Store at the closure of their press conference, and gamers fell in love with it. I usually don’t have a problem with horror games (not since Silent Hill 2 in any case), but I tried to play P.T. for about 15 minutes last night before I had to turn it off. There’s no way in hell I’m going through that before bed. It’s legitimately terrifying in its visuals, audio, and especially its atmosphere, and if Del Toro and Kojima and their team can craft something so freaking scary as a teaser for a completely unrelated title, I cannot wait to see what they do with the full game. And they are aiming to scare the hell out of players. At a follow-up press conference today (which also revealed that Kojima Productions is actually developing the game rather than just overseeing production), Kojima said that “Originally, we were thinking of making a game that would make you pee your pants,” Following discussions with Del Toro, Kojima decided, “we are aiming for a game that will make you shit your pants.”

Yep. Shit your pants. But what if it’s too scary? Won’t people simply not play? That’s not their problem, as it turns out, as Kojima continued “So be it. We don’t care. We are aiming for a game that will make you shit your pants. So please make sure you have a change of clothes.” He joked that “The limited edition will probably include a pair of trousers.”

I just hope that we get a release date, or at least more info on the game soon. I have a horror-itch that hasn’t been scratched since Silent Hill 4.

Briefly: Details are very scarce on this one, but it just may be some of the best gaming news that I’ve ever heard.

Silent Hill is my favourite video game series of all time. Somehow, even after the last few atrocious entries in the series (well, Downpour was okay), I’m still able to say that. That’s how much the series’ early titles resonated with me. It’s a series that was once the pinnacle of the horror gaming experience, and it’s a series that has since fallen into obscurity, mediocrity, and terrible, terrible films.

But that’s about to change, because a new Silent Hill game is in the works, and it’s a collaboration between Metal Gear Solid‘s Hideo Kojima, and master filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. Oh, and it also stars Norman Reedus.

Today at Gamescom, Sony debuted a teaser for a mysterious title called P.T. The ‘world’s first’ interactive teaser was then uploaded onto the Playstation Store. Upon completion (which I’m about to try my hand at as soon as I finish writing), Norman Reedus appears in a desolate, familiar town, before the Silent Hills (yep, with an S) title card appears.

Briefly: Can Lego Marvel Super Heroes just come out already?

Traveller’s Tales has just released a short new trailer for the game, featuring none other than Stan Lee himself. I didn’t think I could be any more excited for the title, but seeing Stan swinging around simple makes me want the even more.

Seriously, this game looks awesome. All of the previous Lego titles have been an absolute blast, but throw Traveller’s Tales tried-and-true style, humour, and gameplay into a title that spans the entire Marvel universe, and we could have the very best Lego game yet.

Briefly: Just yesterday, we saw some new Batman: Arkham Origins screenshots that gave us a great look at the game’s Batcave (among other things). Today, Warner Bros. Interactive debuted a new trailer, filled with never-before-seen footage for the anticipated title.

The trailer does a great job of garnering even more excitement for the game, and also reveals one of Black Mask’s assassins, Firefly. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the game! Batman: Arkham Origins hits PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and Wii U (sans multiplayer) on October 25th!

Batman: Arkham Origins features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline occurring several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City. Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous villains and assassins, the game showcases a young, raw, unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, witness identities being formed and key relationships being forged.

Briefly: It’s not the big news that Sony announced at today’s Gamescom conference, but it’s definitely still worth noting.

Sony has officially dropped the price of its struggling flagship handheld, the Playstation Vita. Effective immediately, the console’s new price will be a cool $200 / €200.

Sony also revealed that a price drop on Vita memory cards is forthcoming.

Is the drop enough to make you consider the console? What do you think is in store for its future? I still believe that the system lacks a ‘must have’ title, and am afraid of what may happen once the PS4 launches. Will the Vita simply become a PS4 streaming device?

Briefly: Finally.

Sony announced earlier this week that the Playstation 4 launch date would be revealed today at Gamescom. Their conference has come and gone, and we now know just when you’ll be able to pick up a PS4 of your very own… and it’s about damned time.

The PS4 will hit North America (US and Canada) on November 15th. As previously revealed, the console will cost a cool $399. European gamers will have to wait an extra two weeks, and can pick up a unit on November 29th (for €399 / £349).

Sony also revealed a price drop for the suffering PS Vita (down to $199, and it’s still not worth buying), and a release date for Gran Turismo 6 (December 6th)!

Briefly: The Playstation 4 is still without an official release date, but that is set to change very soon.

Instead of simply sharing the date with all of us eager fans, the company has announced that they will reveal their PS4 launch plans this Tuesday, August 20th.

Sony states “We’ll kick off the show at 18:00 BST on 20 August 2013 with a briefing to media on our release plans for PlayStation 4, as well as updates on PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita”. You’ll be able to watch the reveal live here, which hopefully goes off without a hitch (unlike their 30-minute late, very inconsistent E3 conference).

What I am about to show you will frighten you. If you have ever played Amnesia or seen any of the hilarious YouTube commentaries, you know how TERRIFYING it can be. Well straight out of GamesCom we get a trailer for Routine, a game that takes place on the moon in a fully fledged moon base. The game features fully randomized puzzles and AI. There is no HUD. No weapons. You run and you hide and die.

No other info about the game is available yet, but it looks fucking scary.

Just out of Cologne is a trailer for Naughty Dogs newest game, The Last of Us. This is the most uncomfortable yet “I-can’t-look-away” trailer I’ve seen all year. This game is the reason I will go buy a PS3. Watch with me.

This years GamesCom is turning out to be more fun than E3! So, if Isaac is realizing that people keep dying around him, why doesn’t he just friggin off himself?! Wouldn’t that be funny if this is how the game ends? You kill yourself…hmmm… ANYWAY take a gander at this new trailer for Dead Space 3!

Dead Space 3 hits shelves February 5th, 2013!

You may as well not even go to GamesCom anymore. Just sit right here at good ole’ Geekscape and enjoy all the news. Now we bring you the newest DmC trailer. We get some more of the narrative given to us as opposed to the last trailer we got.

Now, after seeing this I am back on the fence. He doesn’t even SOUND like Dante anymore. DAFUQ YOU DOING CAPCOM?!?!?

More great news from GamesCom. EA and Crytek have announced their new mulitplayer mode for their upcoming release, Crysis 3. “Hunter Mode” lets players actually be the predator, like the one who hunted Arnold, up against 14  CELL soldiers. Take a peak at the release trailer below.

Now aside from the slightly annoying robotic voice narrating every kill, this looks like it could be really, really fun. From what I can gather, the hunters only have bows and melee kills at their arsenal, while the CELL soldiers have numbers and gadgets on their side. “Hunter Mode” is looking to be a nice selling point for Crysis 3.

Crysis 3 is slated to be released sometime in 2013 on Xbox, PS3 and PC.

GamesCom is the conference that keeps on giving. Now we get a peak at an exclusive trailer for Resident Evil 6! This trailer  centers around Jake and Ashley fighting some baddies in a cabin with a nice escape! Check it out below!

Resident Evil 6 hits shelves October 2nd!

With Gamescom just around the corner, Ubisoft is starting to dish out some pre-tradeshow hype. They just released a new trailer for the multiplayer portion of Assassin’s Creed III. Along the lines as “The Corporation” from Aliens, we get a product demo for the Animus from a lovely Abstergo employee. Take a gander below.

I never personally played any of the Assassin’s Creed multiplayer modes. It all seemed WAY to stressful to be hunted by real people. This iteration looks like it will be even more in depth with more game modes. PLUS! You can be a big breasted woman! I’M SOLD!
