Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (Review Here)

While it may not have been perfect, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past was one of my most pleasurable gaming experiences in 2016. The Dragon Quest series is one of the most colorful and whimsical in the RPG realm and VII was another lovely entry in the series. It somehow managed to escape the tedium that usually comes along with RPG battles. I actually found myself seeking fights in hopes of gaining mastery of over new jobs and potentially befriending the attacking monsters. And oh goodness, it is so darn pretty! The colors simply popped off the 3DS screen.

I also appreciated Square-Enix’s continuing support with DLC. It definitely took some time to be up able to survive those special dungeons but each one was worthwhile. If January’s release of Dragon Quest VIII is anything like VII, I think it is safe to say gamers will have a lot to look forward to.

Pokémon Sun/Moon

While Sun and Moon came out at the tail end of 2016, the titles were worth the wait. I know many longtime fans were tentative about the removal of the standard “Gym System” and its replacement with island trials but I honestly like this way much better. It added more variety to the experience and refreshed the series a bit. I also loved loved loved the introduction of ride pagers instead of relying on HMs to solve puzzles and traverse different environments. I just can’t get enough of the concept of riding on a Stoutland, sniffing out treasure. It cracks me up every time!

The island flavor of the twin titles was lovely and well-done. The details like malasada shops and people calling each other “cousin” were perfect. The overall world feels more fleshed out in my opinion. Regional variations of several Pokémon clinched it.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo

Okay, this isn’t technically a new title but Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s 2016 update, entitled Welcome amiibo, is so brilliant that it deserves a spot on this list. Not only did it manage to reinvigorate a three year old game but also give a boost to the waning interest in amiibo. I even added some older amiibo to my gift list purely for this game. Plus it also introduced a new series of amiibo cards to fuel the collecting addiction. Very clever, Nintendo. Very clever.

Everything Else:

Yuri!!! On Ice (TV Show)

Never in my life did I think I would get interested in (and later obsessed with) an ice-skating anime. Sports-related anime just aren’t my style. Not even Haikyuu!! or Free! could pique my interest. But there is something about the human relationships and emotions in this show that seem so real and relatable that you can’t peel your eyes off it. The relationship between Yuuri and Victor is incredibly touching and one that you become invested in. The opening and ending themes are also super-beautiful.

I urge any anime viewer, sports fan or not, to give Yuri!!! On Ice a look. I am so glad I did. PS- Watch it subtitled, not dubbed. The dub is kind of, sort of, not that good.

The Re-imagining of the Disney Wonder (moment)

The second of the Walt Disney Company’s fleet of cruise ships got a facelift this year. Featuring a upgraded kids area, re-themed adult hangouts, and the replacement of Parrot Cay, the weakest link in the trio of the ship’s restaurants that are included in rotational dining, with the gorgeous Tiana’s Place (of Princess and the Frog fame). The new eatery focuses on Southern cuisine (can you say beignets?) and features a live Jazz band along with an appearance from the owner herself, Tiana.

While many cruisers prefer the newer, bigger Dream and Fantasy ships, I always had a soft spot for the Wonder. With these improvements, I can see the ship becoming others favorite as well.

Yeah… that’s a weird number.

7. Pokemon GO

This one is on the list less so for the game itself (which I’m still playing on my way to and from work), and more for the incredible way that it came into this world. It was the epitome of phenomenon – before Pokémon GO even officially launched in my country hundreds upon hundreds of people were gathered at “Tri-Lures” nearly 24 hours a day; I witnessed dozens and dozens of full grown men and women run as fast as they could when a rare ‘Mon appeared, and I heard the collective groan of 6000+ eager fans in Comic-Con’s Hall H this past Summer as Niantic’s John Hanke revealed that a legendary bird would not be making an appearance that morning.

The game has (sadly) died down a lot since those first incredible months, though I still see quite a few people at popular Pokéstops at almost all hours of the day. Really, the launch of Pokemon GO was like nothing I’ve ever seen before, and likely unlike anything we’ll ever see again.

While most of the folks I know now play pretty casually, or have stopped playing entirely, the real genius of Pokémon GO has been in its ability to raise or re-kindle interest in the brand. I swear that I hear more people (friends included) talking about or playing some form of Pokémon today than I have in the past 15 years. Thanks for this one, Nintendo and Niantic.

6. Overcooked

Overcooked is probably the most fun I’ve had playing a video game this year.

I’ve been getting way into couch co-op experiences on my Xbox One over the past six months, and while my fiancé and I are still slowly making our way through the Halo and Borderlands games, Overcooked is a title that I’m eager to jump into every time we have friends over (as it feels essentially impossible with less than four players).

The game has all players as chefs cooperating in crazy, constantly changing kitchens so that they can save a bleak, bleak future from certain destruction. Typically, players will be cut off from certain ingredients or cooking apparatus’, and your group needs to have amazing communication to do well in each level. Typically, our group will do poorly in a stage, figure out how each of us could be better used in the particular stage through way too in-depth discussion, and then jump back into the same level to perform substantially better. It’s an absolute blast and there have definitely been multiple instances where I’ve had to pause the game from laughing so, so hard.

It’s cheap, and it’s so much fun. You can even play with four players using just two controllers, which adds further challenge and hilarity to the already gut wrenching title.

5. Stardew Valley

I always loved the idea of games like Harvest Moon or Animal Crossing, but regardless of the iteration that I tried, neither game could ever hold my interest for more than a few hours.

I picked up Stardew Valley on a whim for my still figuring out her gaming niche fiancé, and pretty quickly became as addicted to the game as she is.

Every time I turn the game on, it’s a constant struggle to turn it off in order to do something more productive. “Just one more day.” I’ll tell myself over and over again as the seasons and hours pass, but hours later the game is still on. It’s simple, it’s incredible, the soundtrack is definitely in my Apple Music library, and I bet that I end 2017 having played Stardew Valley more hours than anything that’s set to come out this year.

If this game gets some co-op multiplayer, I think we may both quit our jobs and die of bed (couch) sores. If you’re trying to get your non-gamer partner into a video game, this is a great place to start… though you may need to buy a second console as they’ll be hogging it all the time.

4. Oxenfree (Review Here)

Oxenfree was one of the very first titles that I played in 2016, and as I noted in my review last January, it was “far and away the first standout title of 2016”.

From its unique put-this-on-my wall art style, its incredible soundtrack (that I still listen to regularly), the harrowing what-could-happen-next plot and the themes within, and that angsty teen coming of age dialog that I simply can’t get enough of, Night School Studio crafted an absolute gem that deserves to be played by more gamers.

I could go on, but you can head right here for my review and full thoughts on the title (play it)!

3. The Last Guardian

I can’t believe it’s finally here.

As a YUGE fan of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, I firmly believed that I’d never have an opportunity to play this game,

Now it’s here, and it’s everything that I’d hoped for from a Team Ico game, and mostly what I expected as well (including its clunky controls).

I haven’t had an opportunity to finish the game just yet, but if Trico dies I know I’ll be bawling my eyes out. The relationship formed here is like nothing I’ve ever seen in a video game before, and it’s likely a bond that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

While I’m disappointed that you’ll need a PS4 Pro to get decent performance from The Last Guardian, regardless of the model you have this needs to be on your must-play list. Reviews came out divisive, but Team Ico’s latest tells an incredible tale and will be one of the most memorable titles of this generation. You just definitely need to expect a title that doesn’t feel completely modern.

2. The Elder Scrolls Skyrim: Special Edition

2016 marked the first time that I played Skyrim in the launch of its PS4/Xbox One Special Edition, and for the past few months I’ve been wondering: what the hell took me FIVE years to ever give it a shot.

As a huge fan of Bethesda’s Fallout series, a similar game in an incredible fantasy world with insane creatures like massive dragons, mammoths, witches and literal giants (that I still cower in fear from) sounds right up my alley. And it is right up my alley, as it turns out.

Yes, combat has come a long way in the past five years (my character is pretty stealthy and into archery, and it’s still pretty odd when a dude with an arrow sticking out of him decides that there’s nothing to worry about), and a lot of the game’s mechanics feel clunky as hell compared to newer titles like Fallout 4 and even The Elder Scrolls Online (which I’m also playing thanks to Skyrim), but with every quest feeling as varied as it does, and such a vast world so ripe for exploring, I cannot wait to see where my journey as Dragonborn takes me.

If you haven’t played Skyrim, and you like video games even a little bit, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up. Heck, even if you have played it, the ability to mod the game on Xbox One and (to a lesser extent) PS4 is pretty damned cool.

1. Firewatch (Review Here)

Another incredibly gorgeous indie gem from ex-Telltale Games staffers.

Back in February I noted that “tears were welling in my eyes within the first few moments of Firewatch, and I can’t think of a single other video game in my 25 years that’s had such an affect on me so quickly.”

It’s that damned good.

The game features incredible performances from Mad Men’s Rich Sommer and The Walking Dead (game) Cissy Jones, and aside from (still) being the most gorgeous game that I’ve ever played, it’ll have you on the edge of your seat for nearly every second of its too-short campaign.

Since writing my review back in February, the game has been updated to fix some of the performance issues that plagued its early builds, and has added a neat new mode where you can just wander around the beautiful forest and chillax.

Seriously, every frame of this game looks like the Olly Moss painting that its art style is based on. It doesn’t get better than this. Yep, its ending is pretty divisive, but I fell firmly on the “love it” side of things.

You can read my review of Firewatch here, and listen to Shane and I discuss the game here.

Game That I’m Going To Love But Have Only Put An Hour Into So Far: Overwatch

Can you believe that 2016 is coming to a close? In just a few days, we’ll abolish that dreaded six for ten more years, and a cool, clean, sexy seven will take its place.

2016 has been an incredible year for everything aside from presidential candidates and celebrity deaths, so as always, we wanted to share our favourite games, movies, moments and more of 2016.

Adam shared his favourite things yesterday, and today longtime critic MCDave is here to share his favorite films of the past year!

#10. Arrival

My top ten list begins with Denis Villenueve’s sci-fi drama, Arrival. This Oscar hopeful deviates from the stereotypical sci-fi structure by offering majestic cinematography and an artistic vision from its filmmaker. After 12 alien spacecrafts appear across the globe, the U.S. military reaches out to a linguistics expert (Amy Adams) to form a line of communication and determine if their motive is peaceful or violent. This cerebral effort works in opposition to some punishingly sluggish pacing which, admittedly, concludes in a remarkably clever fashion.

#9. The Nice Guys

One of the year’s most entertaining features came from Iron Man 3 director, Shane Black, and jump-started the summer blockbuster season. The Nice Guys stands as a successful twist on the buddy-cop genre as two private investigators (Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe) look into the disappearance of a teenage girl. There are countless laugh-out-loud moments scattered throughout this hilariously scripted story that’s bound to get the sequel treatment.

#8. Remember

One of the only upsides to this year’s middling crop of releases is it allows me to offer praise to some lesser-known titles. One such film is the early-year release, Remember, from director Atom Egoyan. Christopher Plummer stars as Zev, an elderly man living in a retirement-home and experiencing early stages of dementia. He is reminded of his gruesome childhood in the Auschwitz internment camp where a Nazi guard killed both his and a fellow resident’s families. With nothing left to live for, Zev sets out on a vengeful mission to find the prison guard and kill him. Remember is a wildly engaging thrill ride that’s elevated by an explosive final scene you won’t want to miss.

#7. Nocturnal Animals

Tom Ford’s stylish sophomore effort isn’t everything you’d expect it to be, but it’s still quite good. Amy Adams stars as an art gallery owner who receives a manuscript of her ex-husband’s new novel. The book is dedicated to her and, as she becomes consumed by its grisly story, she reflects on the emotional torment she caused her former lover (Jake Gyllenhaal). I expected a more brutal and twisted affair, but what it lacks in physical anguish is made up with psychological misery. Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson offer fine supporting work while Tom Ford’s direction is on-point.

#6. Don’t Think Twice

The modern evolution of the comedy genre is actually quite sad. Character development in such a setting has become a lost art and cleverly-crafted humor is a dying skill. Thankfully, Mike Birbiglia’s personal indie comedy, Don’t Think Twice, represents a return to the glory days. The film follows a tight-knit improv comedy group who begin to experience fierce competition between one another when the world’s most notable sketch-comedy show scouts them for new talent. This wonderfully told story draws the audience into each of its characters and is highlighted by hilarious situational humor.

#5. Manchester by the Sea

Kenneth Lonergan’s emotionally charged Oscar contender is by no means an easy watch. Casey Affleck, who stands as the Best Actor frontrunner for his unmatched performance, plays a brutally scarred handyman who returns to his home town to care for his nephew after his brother passes away. Deeply immersed in feelings of hope, heartache and uncertainty, Manchester by the Sea absolutely pushes the dramatic envelope.

#4. Captain Fantastic

There’s something so euphoric about Captain Fantastic. On the surface the film’s central characters appear to be a crazed family who shut themselves off from the world by living deep in the wilderness of the Pacific Northwest. But at the same time, to have the fortitude and survival instincts to actually pull it off are impressive and convincing. There are countless controversial elements scattered all throughout this captivating story and artistically shot film that make Captain Fantastic a movie unlike any other.

#3. Hell or High Water

David Mackenzie’s tale of bank-robbing brothers is the perfect blend of the classic Western genre with a modern day flair. Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Jeff Bridges all provide phenomenal performances that catapult this slow-boiling and often witty screenplay into a completely well-rounded piece of filmmaking.

#2. Moonlight

I had heard all of the lofty praises for Barry Jenkins’ indie drama, but a familiar premise left my expectations extremely tempered. However, Moonlight was this year’s biggest surprise. It delivers the finest ensemble of 2016 and tells its powerful coming-of-age story with a level of tenderness and humanity that will leave you craving for more long after its credits roll.

#1. La La Land

In a year overrun with grim storylines from its major awards season contenders, Damien Chazelle’s whimsical musical is a fresh breath of upbeat originality and a bona-fide Best Picture selection. La La Land comes with its own roller coaster of emotions, but the film tells a deeply passionate story using a deliberate nod to classic cinema all while injecting a modern touch.

First up is Adam, aka The_ACZ – take a look at his favorite things of the past year, and share yours in the comments below!

Favorite Animated Movie: Zootopia

2016’s been a pretty terrible year for movies. Most summer blockbusters ended up mostly disappointing or ended up being completely re-worked and destroyed in post *Cough DC Movies Cough*. Thankfully, with the exception of a few films, 2016’s actually been a pretty great year for animated films. The highlight of which, is Zootopia. Being the first Disney animated film released this year, Zootopia couldn’t have come at a more perfect time or year. What seems like just another funny animated film with talking animals quickly turns into a film about racism, discrimination, and tolerance. I would tell you that you need to see it, but seeing as the film has already grossed over a billion dollars, odds are you already have.

Favorite Reveal: Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s had it rough these last couple of years. Between the Wii U being a flop and recent tone deafness of the company have made it hard to love them, but things seem to be finally taking a turn for the better for the Big N. For about the past 2 years we heard whispers of a brand new Nintendo console that was told to seemingly blend handhelds and home consoles. Commonly known as Codename: NX, October 2016 was the month that all those rumors finally came to surface as the Nintendo Switch. All of a sudden, everyone on the internet stopped fighting and came together to enjoy a new Nintendo console being revealed. Sure we could have (and did) argue about its battery life, 3rd party support, etc, but for that moment, everyone was happy to just see Nintendo finally picking themselves out of the mud after being dragged through it for 2 painful years. Most importantly, it showed us that Nintendo is going to be just fine.

Favorite Game: Watch Dogs 2

I’m going to try and keep things pretty short for this one seeing as how I already covered this a bit during our Holiday Wishlist piece, but Watch Dogs 2 is a genuine surprise for me. I wasn’t really a fan of the first Watch Dogs as I thought it was trying to hard to be brooding and serious, but that couldn’t be farther from the sequel. Set in sunny San Fransisco, Watch Dogs 2 centers around Marcus Holloway as he joins the hacktivist group Dedsec as he and his partners try to take down the major corporations like Blume. To start off, the game has a great sense of humor, and the approach to missions are very varied. The inclusion of drones are also a very welcome addition as they allow you to scout out areas from afar. You also have the option of taking a stealthy or guns blazing approach to most missions depending on what play style you prefer (I choose non lethal because Marcus seems like too much of a nice guy to kill anyone.) Round that out with a great cast of colorful and diverse characters, and you have yourself one hell of an experience. If you played the first one and didn’t like it, or never picked up the series, this is a great entry as you don’t really need to know anything about the first one to enjoy this. Plus, this game is still on sale! $40 can still net you the base game, but $60 can now net you the gold edition! What are you waiting for? Go out and get it!

Most Disappointing Film: Suicide Squad

Suicide Squad is a sad tale of frustration and disappointment. What was supposed to be a saving grace for the DCEU after Man of Steel and Batman V. Superman, and the trailers seemed to echo that. Looking much lighter and more fun, the movie seemed to be just the shot of adrenaline that WB and DC’S fledgling universe needed. Sadly, due to studio meddling and bad test screenings, Suicide Squad ended up turning into an abuse victim as the film starting getting drastically stripped of whole scenes, characters, and development in favor of a choppy, confusing, and very muddled outcome that in no way even slightly resembles a movie. Even with actors like Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, The Enchantress is such a lame and boring villain with little to no set-up. At this point, I’ve been burned so many times by DC films that I can’t even trust the trailers for these films anymore. I hope for everyone’s sake that Wonder Woman can turn things around, but if it can’t.. . . .Hey! At least The Lego Batman Movie is coming out soon. Speaking of…..

Most Anticipated Film: The Lego Batman Movie

While DC seems to be having trouble just trying to make a film that can please everyone, their parent WB has been having the opposite with their newly started LEGO universe. Coming early February, The LEGO Batman Movie seems to be taking what people loved about this character in The LEGO Movie and expanding upon it further. The trailers have also done a good job making fun of a lot of the aspects of Batman (and even the DCEU at some points), but also still keeping true to the characters and knowing what does work. Can we just skip January 2017 so we can get to this film faster?

Ok 2016, we get it. Its been a bad year. Bad movies, bad political figures, bad everything, but you shouldn’t be taking it out on some of our most beloved celebrities.

About an hour ago, L.A Times reported that Star Wars actress Carrie Fisher had gone into Cardiac Arrest during a flight from London to L.A and was quickly taken to UCLA Medical Center for treatment. All we can do right now is hope the best for her, and pray to god that this isn’t what we’re going to remember about the end of 2016. All of us here at Geekscape wish Ms. Fisher a fast and speedy recover and hope that the force is with her during this time.

The holiday season is here, and regardless of the exact holiday that you plan on celebrating this year, we know that you’re just in it for the presents (well, and the family/friends, and the food, and some other things too, but mostly the presents).

Instead of doing a traditional gift guide (if your giftee likes x, get them y, etc), we thought we’d take another route:  tell you what we‘d want for our holiday gifts. You know our writers, so chances are that if you need to pick up a gift for someone similar, they’ll probably be into the same stuff!

Here goes! Enjoy, and be sure to let us know what gifts you’re hoping for in the comments below!

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (for the Nintendo 3DS)

Now technically, this game comes out just after the holidays (January 20, 2017) but I am so excited for this baby that I would happily take an IOU. Truth be told, I never managed to finish the original PS2 version of the title so I am especially excited to get another chance to tackle it with the new release’s extra features. I eagerly look forward to playing the game on the sofa. And in bed. And on planes. God, I love my 3DS!

Hashtag Collectibles’ Water Bear Plush (available at ThinkGeek and directly from Hashtag Collectibles)

Bizarre critters are kind of my thing. That is actually how I became acquainted with the makers of this adorable plush. I met Hashtag Collectibles through their Stuffed Blobfish years ago and I have been a fan of theirs ever since. Their stuffed Water Bear just looks so soft and huggable. And just look at those big, shiny eyes! I want one so freaking bad.

Popplio Plush – Trainer Size

Yes, I have more than one plush on my list. If you know me personally, than you are probably surprised that they aren’t all plushes. Anyways, back on topic. I am hooked on Pokémon Sun and Popplio was my choice for a starter. Who wouldn’t want a life-size plush of this lovable water-type?

popplioKitties Draped Ladies’ Hooded Cardigan

I am a sucker for cats and cardigans. Combine the two and it is love at first sight. And dude, it even has a hood. You can’t beat that!

The Art of Fire Emblem: Awakening

Fire Emblem has some damn pretty art and I would love to have them in a book to admire, preferably over a nice cup of tea. Not only are there illustrations but there are story boards and even scripts for every piece of dialogue. When you consider all the options you have during conversations and situations, that is really very impressive. This book looks to be not only yummy eye candy but fun reading.

NES Classic Edition

While the Nintendo Switch is still 3 months away from release, that’s not stopping Nintendo from releasing a new(ish) console for the holiday season. Enter the NES Classic. While it may just seem like a simple plug ‘n play,  it’s a much better investment than if you were to buy the included games on Nintendo’s Wii U Virtual Console. The game selection is very varied, and has even been color corrected from the Wii U’s dark and drab color palette. That’s if you can find it in stock. Yes, just like Amiibo back in 2014, Nintendo has “underestimated” demand for the product, causing a nationwide storage and many MANY people in hysteria. Still, for what it’s worth, Definitely pick this up if you find it.

We can’t really link this one, because it’s sold out everywhere forever.

Uncharted 4 PS4 Slim 500GB Bundle

2016 has been a pretty awful year for most things in general. Everything except for video games. Weirdly enough, this has been a pretty great year for games such as Street Fighter V, Uncharted 4, The Last Guardian, and many more. What do all of these have in common? They’re all PS4 exclusives. Sony has been on fire with their games division (One of the only parts of the company that’s actually profitable and good), and their recent showings at E3 2016 and PSX 2016 show that the company shows no signs of slowing down the hype train! Right now you can even get the 500GB Uncharted 4 Bundle for only $270 instead of $300 on Walmart’s website right now! So if you already have an Xbox One, it’s never been a better time to join the Playstation nation.

Gravity Falls Journal #3 Collectors Edition

While we had to say Goodbye to Gravity Falls as a TV series this year, that doesn’t mean you have to say goodbye to gravity falls as a whole. While Disney did release a Journal #3 earlier this year back around Comic Con, they have decided to release a special collector’s edition of the item for hardcore fans. This new edition includes invisble blacklight ink, a monocle, and much more to give the book a more authentic feel than the current hardback version. Right now, it’s going for over $100 pre sale, but you can currently pre order it on amazon for only $90! If you’re a fan of Gravity Falls, you NEED this in your life.

Watch Dogs 2 (Xbox One)

The first Watch Dogs is pretty notorious by now. While the final product ended up being just an alright game, many people were disappointed by how limiting  and underwhelming the full game actually was compared to its original E3 debut. A big graphical downgrade coupled with very limited hacking, and too serious of a story completely turned people off of the first game, leaving them with a very sour taste in their mouth. Not so much with Watch Dogs 2 though. The devs over at Ubisoft really took the criticism to heart, and in return, created a goofy, over the top, adventure where the only thing you can’t hack is the game itself. Watch Dogs 2 is a fine example of game devs listening to fan feedback in order to create a better product for both sides. The game is even going on sale for only $40 at Target on December 18th. So if you’re looking to catch up on any fall games you may have missed, Definitely take the offer, and hack into this deal.

The Nice Guys (Blu-Ray)

Let’s be real. 2016 was pretty bad for movies in general. Bad Summer blockbusters, boring Oscar noms, etc. The only real good movies this year have really been the animated movies, but that doesn’t mean all live action movies were bad. Enter The Nice Guys, a movie that’s a love letter to 70’s buddy cop films. Directed by Iron Man 3’s Shane Black, The Nice Guys stars Russel Crowe, Ryan Gossling, and is a smart, and clever take on the once popular genre. This has got to be one of the best overlooked movies this year. The crazy part is that you can get the Blu-Ray for only $13 at some stores! So if you’ve been burnt out by blockbusters like me this year and want something new, take this film for a spin.

Audible

Last year, I raved about Audible, and I’ll do it again this year. For me, audiobooks have essentially replaced reading books of the non comic book variety. At the very least I listen to a book on my commute to and from work (which totals 40 minutes/day). So multiply that by 20 days and you have 13 hours of reading/month! Get use to listening on the 1.5x setting to burn through even more books!

Some of my favourites this year include:

Off to be the Wizard by Scott Meyer, narrated by Luke Daniels
Replay by Ken Grimwood, narrated by William Dufris
The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss, narrated by Nick Podehl

ComiXology Unlimited

Think of ComiXology’s service as the Netflix for comic books. They have some great content available and starting to get into the production game. Take a look at the available titles and see if you’ll get your money’s ($5.99 a month) worth from it. If you like Image Comics this’ll be up your alley.

Raspberry Pi

I like retro (SNES era) video games, this will let me play them all! Well, hopefully. I’ll be using this kit and following the instructions from Lifehacker. Any suggestions, let me know!

Playstation VR

Yeah, I’m a sucker for new stuff.

That said, I’ve been pretty enamoured with the Playstation VR (and VR in general) since the very first time that I put on one of the headsets. I don’t own a gaming PC, and likely never will, so the fact that I already have a PS4 sitting on my shelf makes biting the bullet for a PSVR a little easier.

The Playstation VR is by far the most comfortable VR headset that I’ve worn (which is fantastic as a glasses-wearer), and I’m enthralled by the promise of being able to play full titles like Resident Evil VII using the headset. PSVR already has so much more support coming down the pipeline than any of Sony’s previous peripherals, and with some of the slick games that have already been released (Arkham VR, Until Dawn, etc), it’s seriously hard not to just throw this on a credit card.

Apple AirPods

Again, I like new stuff.

I was looking forward to picking up a pair of Apple’s new, wireless AirPods at the end of October. The earphones weren’t quite ready for consumers at that point, and saw a delay that had them completely unavailable until earlier this week.

These things look slick as hell. Apple’s new W1 wireless chip ensures that there’s none of the annoying pairing-with-every-device-all-the-time annoyances of standard Bluetooth headsets, and the fact that there’s no wire connecting the left bud to the right is super cool.

You’ll get about five hours of battery life from the AirPods, and the clever little floss-sized carrying case will stop you from losing them, as well as give you another ~19 hours of charge. Damn.

More Philips Hue Stuff

This is a staple on my yearly wishlist. Philips Hue is a smart, heavily expandable lightbulb system that lets you set automation patterns for your lights, turn them on and off with your phone (or even Siri), and much, much more.

The Hue website will tell you all about the science of the colour of light and why it’s important, and as much as I love all of that stuff, Hue is just convenient as hell. When I leave the house, my lights turn off. When I come home, they turn back on. When my Sleep Cycle Alarm Clock app wakes me up in the morning, my lights simulate a sunrise. I sit down for a movie, and turn off or dim them via Control Centre on my phone, or just ask Siri to do it for me.

Also, using the slick Ambify app, you can have them pulse and change color to the beat of any music.

Really, I’m barely scratching the surface of what Philips Hue is capable of (just look at IFTTT), but I have been absolutely in love with these light bulbs for a year now, and would love to add more to my collection.

The Encyclopedia of Sports Entertainment

Last December my fiancé and I decided to give the award-winning WWE Network a try. “Just for a month,” we said. A year later we’re still hooked, have friends over for every PPV event, and the Network is probably the most-used streaming service of the several we’re currently paying for.

I watched professional wrestling briefly as a child, and now that I’m back, I’m very aware of the decades and decades of incredible characters, gripping storylines, and dearly missed superstars that the industry holds. I’d love to learn all about them, and the recently released Encyclopedia of Sports Entertainment seems like a great way to do so. The book contains “over 400 full-color pages and over 1,200 Superstar and event profiles. The WWE all-time roster in this book has been expanded to unprecedented proportions, and now features all your favorite heroes from the modern era.”

Sounds pretty awesome to me.

The Last Guardian: Collector’s Edition

I (well, more so everyone) has been waiting for this game forever (and ever). It needs no introduction, as we’ve been hearing people begging for it for the better part of ten years.

The Last Guardian finally released (to fairly divisive reviews) earlier this month, and I’m so excited to finally learn about Trico whenever I can get my hands on the title. I was just out of high school when The Last Guardian was first announced, and it’s hard to believe that all theses years later, it’s finally here.

The Collector’s Edition of the game includes a slew of extras, including a Premium statue, Premium Steelbook game case + Blu-ray game disc, 72-page art book, Digital sountrack (10 songs), Sticker sheet, Collector’s box. I’m in!

Tile Slim Bluetooth Tracker

Have you ever lost your phone in your house? Or put your wallet somewhere? Or left your keys in an obscure place? There is a thing called a Tile . You attach it to your keys, your phone, slip it in your wallet and you can track your items. It’s a little thicker than a credit card so it’ll fit into your wallet perfectly. And it’s cheap!

Donations to the Sunshine Kids

Every year, or almost every year, I try to donate to a new charity that I’ve found. This year it’s the Sunshine Kids. The Sunshine kids was established in 1982 and the non-profit organization is dedicated to children with cancer. What makes them different from say Make-A-Wish? Once a sunshine kid, always a sunshine kid. So if you had cancer when you were 8 and are now 30? You’re still part of the organization. Based out of Texas, there are two chapters in Los Angeles and the kids are just full of life.

Copper Smartphone Projector

It’s a vintage inspired projector for your smartphone! Easy to assemble and easy to use, not only does it project against a wall, it also amplified the sound. Another ‘cheap’ item for Christmas courtesy of Urban Outfitters. I’m sure there are other places you can get smart phone projectors, but I’m a fan of vintage things.

Sphero Force Band

As someone who likes Star Wars ( I love it and I blame my mother) having the power to control a BB8 unit from my wrist is pretty damn cool. Having played with my light saber, pretending I was a young Jedi when I was well, young, having the power of the Force now, I think would be pretty awesome. Do I sound like a nerd yet? No. I could continue, but we don’t want to go there. Anyway – having this would be amazing.

Making of Books

I like knowing how things are made. I like knowing how a director figured out how they’re Oscar winning movie was going to be made. What processes they went through, how the script jumped off the page and onto my screen, what costumes were picked and how they were picked, things like that. I know the basics, but I like to see how other people do it. It could be for anything, movie, TV, theater – all of it interests me. I’m a nerd for that kind of thing. If I know how one piece of the puzzle works, then when I see the finished project, it’ll make more sense.

Bose QC 35

Due my work as a billionaire playboy philanthropist movie star (or something) I travel pretty regularly. In order to stay true to my roots, and to stay connected with the little people, I fly coach. As I’m sure you all know, flying coach is about the same as riding a Greyhound bus through a tire fire factory.

Fuel today is so prohibitively expensive, airlines have to cram in every last passenger in order to make any flight financially sustainable. They pack in people like insulation, shrink down the aisles to fit more seats, and remove anything but the bare minimum of amenities to keep us from—God forbid—consider taking a train instead.
And babies? I think they hand those out instead of headphones nowadays. It seems that every flight I’m on contains at least a bushel of newborns, still swaddled in hospital rags, screaming at the world for having the audacity to exist!

Enter the Bose QC 35. Bose has been the leader in noise-reduction/cancellation headphones for years now, and this current model only improves on the old formula. The over-the-ear design, combined with a plush leather cushion, effectively silences even the most egregious noises. Once you turn on the active cancellation tech, the world dissolves into a muted paradise, where you could vanish from the horrors of manned-flight into your escape of choice.

“But Adam,” you cry from your cramped middle seat. “Those cords are so invasive and tangly.”

First of all, how dare you speak to me when I’m in the middle of a rant? Secondly, the QC 35 is wireless. That’s right. They’ve done away with the most annoying part of the headphone.

Yes, this means you have to connect via Bluetooth, but the battery lasts 20 hours on a single charge. So even if you’re flying to Fiji, you’re covered.

And, as a final bonus, the headband is made of Alcantara. “What is Alcantara?” you ask while fumbling with your peasant food. Alcantara is the luxury material used by only the fanciest manufacturers of yachts and impractical automobiles. Why is that important?

Because if you’re dropping $300+ on headphones, you’d better be getting something worth bragging about.

Whiskey Making Kit

I’ve only recently started dabbling in home brewing for beer, and already I consider any other form of beverage unpalatable and plebian. How dare I sully my taste buds with anything so uncouth? Surely only the hand-crafted ales of a red-bearded god (me) should ever pass forth between my lips!

But beer is so carby, and living in California means I have to counter every intake of carbs with violent stretches of—shudder—exercise (because we’re all very vain here). So instead, I delight my senses with barrel-age, peat-soaked scotch.

Until recently, I’ve been forced to accept the substandard distillations of the aged families of the Highlands, Speysides, and Isles. Sure, they have hundreds of years of history making whiskey, and sure they are objectively the greatest distillers of our time, but certainly a 30-something millennial can figure out how to make the same amazing concoctions with nothing more than cheap wood and grain alcohol. Right?

Enter the Whiskey and Rum making kit. It’s pretty simple, really. You dump about 750ml of pure, unadulterated poison (grain alcohol) into a barrel made of cheap wood, drop in a powder of “flavors,” and wait a few weeks.

That’s got to be just as good as taking the time to culture a drum of 21-year-old nectar of the gods?

Serenity Film Scale Replica

Take my love, take my land. Take me where I cannot stand…

Firefly ran for just half a season more than a decade ago, and yet I can recall every detail of that show even now. Sure, that could be because I have a bimonthly marathon of every episode + Serenity (the fan-driven movie that changed an empire), but I choose to believe it is due to the enduring legacy of Joss Whedon’s greatest epic.

Like all Browncoats (a term us Firefly fans use lovingly), I am often depressed by the sheer lack of available tools for acting out my pages of fan-fiction. Season 8 is when things really heat up, when a pulsar launches Serenity into an alternate reality and Mal and the crew face off against Admiral Adama and the crew of the Battlestar Galactica!

But alas, in order to fully realize that dream, I was forced to use my poorly constructed cardboard version of the iconic ship. This often led to my characters (repurposed G.I. Joes, if you’re wondering) falling through the vessel enroute to places unknown.

No longer, with the new Film-Scale Artisan Replica from QMx. This faithful and gorgeous reproduction of the Firefly-class starship features an incredible amount of detail. It’s a steal at under $10,000, and who can put a price on being able to FINALLY film my award-winning short: Mal and the Anger Bunnies.

Marvel Groot Car Charger

Let’s all be honest for a minute. Let’s stop with the games and facades and let it all be real for just a moment.

LA traffic sucks donkey stones.

There. I said it. And you know what? There are few out there who would argue with me.

So how do you survive the literal HOURS you have to spend going from point A to point B in the godforsaken town?

Some people choose to text and drive, but that’s basically becoming Hitler on wheels if you ask me.
Others listen to books on tape. You know what, you might as well beat puppies with rolled up copies of Harry Potter for all the evil you’re bringing into the world.

For me, maintaining my sanity while living inside my gas-guzzling money pit only takes one thing: A Baby Groot Car Charger.

The best thing to happen to cinema since the first talkies has to the be the all-encompassing Mavel Cinematic Universe. And the best thing to come out of the MCU has to be Guardians of the Galaxy. And if we’re all gonna lay out some truth today, we can agree that the best part of GotG has been Groot. Given how amazing the teaser for Vol. 2 has been, I think we can safely assume Baby Groot will cure the misery that has been 2016.

So now you can have a tiny, plastic version of Planet Earth’s favorite sapling. And better yet? He’ll charge your useless electronics.

You’re welcome.

Longclaw

I don’t know about you, but I count Zombie Apocalypse (Zompocalypse) as one of my top 3 priorities for preparing for the future. If you’re dying to know, the other two are Robots Gain Sentience and Being Abducted by Sexy Aliens. No, building a dependable portfolio nor investing in land are not on the list.

When I think about the ways the eventual undead uprising could occur, I grow concerned that our (not-so-subtle) craving for the shambling dead may be for naught. Given how well the rest of this year has gone, it’s a safe bet we’re in for a Game of Thrones style army of the dead.

Since Bran the Builder has yet to seal off Canada with a great mountain of magical ice, I think we’re going to all need to get our hands on an authentic Valerian-steel sword, and I call dibs on Long Claw.

Made famous by the late Commander Mormont of the Night’s Watch, and then wielded by the perpetually ignorant Jon Snow, Long Claw is a song of metal and leather. It cuts through undead flesh like a…well, like a magic-infused sword through rotten flesh. If you’re up against White Walkers, Wights, or even White Supremacists*, then you can’t do better than Long Claw.

Then again, if we end up with a Dawn of the Dead (remake) style Zompocalypse, where the dead are Olympic-level sprinters, we’re all dead in five hours anyway.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

*Hey. Don’t be a dick and use this prop to hurt people. That would be a dick move. You dick.

Loot Crate Socks Subscription

Loot Crate Socks (lootwear): I have had a few of these subscriptions and as a man who wears a lot of suits (for work), these socks are amazing. They tend to use great quality fabric ranging from hiking to dress. All of Loot Crate’s socks are exclusive prints; check out their backlog, my legend of Zelda 8 bit socks are a hit when I show them off. Plus, as an “adult” with a wife and 2 kids, owning geeky socks lets me keep my fanboy membership. Just like most online subscriptions you can do yearly or 3-month or monthly. Their customer service is top notch as well, I received a hole in one of my socks, within a week I had a brand new pair, no questions asked. Loot Crate itself tends to have some quality boxes but I’m telling you for a cheap (depending on the plan), fun, stylish subscription- this is the one I recommend.

Triad Trike Bike

Triad Trike Bikes: Adult Big Wheels! I’ll repeat: Adult Big Wheels! They are almost custom made, with bullet proof – oath free wheels, oversized handle bars with lock grips, and a groovy color scheme. They cost a hefty price tag of over $300 but if you want to be king of school yard (as an adult), sometimes you have to shell out the green. They are built to drift and do they! Triad has put a few videos up of how they handle, you owe it to yourself to go on Amazon and watch. Even if outside activities aren’t your thing; acting crazy and drifting on an oversized trike should be tried at least once (especially if you missed out as a child). So, relive those Big Wheel glory days and buy a triad. These toys are a sure fire bet for fun.

The 12 Bottle Bar: A Dozen Bottles.

I’ve always fancied myself a wannabe bartender, and the art of making cocktails has always interested me.

The inherent problem you run into when trying to start your own home bar, is the sheer amount of stuff you need to buy and stock to have a competent selection for your drinks. I’ve read plenty of bartending/home bar guides that say you need to shell out a lot of money to start. Then I came across the 12 Bottle Bar Book.

This book has over 200 recipes in it that only need access to 12 bottles in total. That includes stables like bitters and vermouth. This is a fantastic book for someone starting into their own home bar experience, and when you get down to it. Cocktail making is BASICALLY just alchemy, and we all need that level 1 tome to start our training.

Grado Labs DJ100 Cartrdige

Grado Labs is one of the most prestigious companies around when it comes to audio gear. They’ve been independently owned and operated for over 60 years, making top shelf headphones and cartridges (turntable needles) in Brooklyn. They are the epitome of the American dream, and their care for their product comes through.

When this article was originally a gift guide I was going to suggest their SR80e Headphones. Since this is all about me me me, I want to get a pair of their DJ needles!

Their DJ cartridges are designed to take a beating. They resist heavy tracking forces, have top notch channel isolation and incredible frequency responses. I’ve had an opportunity to hear their Prestige Series cartridges in person, and I was blown away.

They lay slightly on the pricey side, $100 a cartridge, but they have user replaceable styli and are sure to take a beating any DJ will throw at them.

ASUS ROG Radeon RX 480

I will admit it. I am an AMD fanboi. I will always have their CPU’s and GPU’s in my rig. My first gen R9 290X dual is starting to struggle a bit, so it might be time for an upgrade.

The RX 480 series is the latest and greatest from AMD, and delivers incredible performance for the dollar. Fully supports Direct X 12, so you know this card will be future proof for some time.

This particular pressing from ASUS and their Republic of Gamers line of products is fashionable to boot. Featuring full spectrum RGB lighting and intelligent cooling, this will look fantastic in any gaming case.

FiveFour Club subscription

FiveFour Club is probably one of my most favorite things I’ve discovered over the last few years. The one thing that us Geeks usually fall short on is fashion. Dressing well is something we kind of ignore, we’re way to busy being occupied with D&D campaigns, Kill-Death Ratios, Uber Micro, Sick Vids, collecting toys, gaming, Comic-Con, and finding that perfect raid group. So obviously when it comes to getting nice clothes and dressing like “ADULTS” (disregard the fact that I dress as Rarity from MLP at SDCC) falls to the wayside. Now, there isn’t anything inherently WRONG with those #lit graphic tees, but your sister in laws wedding ins’t the place to show off your Killing Joke shirt you got signed by Alan Moore in 2004.

FiveFour’s beauty is it’s simplicity. You fill out a style guide and every month a stylist will put together some clothing options for you. That’s it! They show up in your mailbox ready to wear. After having it for a few years, half my wardrobe is FiveFour. They run a tad SMALL. I have a big belly and big shoulders, so I have to size up a tad.

Physical Release from Dreamcatalogue

Vaporwave is a very divisive thing. People either are completely absorbed in the aesthetic, or hate it. I am in the former camp. I love everything about it. The music, the vibes, the essence, the art, the clothing, the anachronistic nature of it all. It’s something I extremely enjoy. Dreamcatalogue is my favorite record label publishing some incredible artists such as 2814, COCAINEJESUS, and telepath just to name a few. Dream is putting the time and effort in making incredible physical releases of music that tries to be a lowfi and retro as possible. The cassette tape releases are works of art and I would LOVE to get my hands on one eventually.

If you’d like to check out the full list of Nominees, check it out right here! Did your favorite game get nominated? Who do YOU think should have been nominated? Tell us in the comments below! The Game Awards premieres on December 1st.

Much of this year in YuGiOh has revolved around nostalgia. Shining Victories and The Dark Illusion booster sets have firmly revived the Blue Eyes White Dragon and Dark Magician archtypes from the beginnings of the game, while older monsters from the 5D‘s and GX eras have gotten plenty of love over the last 12 months. Now that the year is wrapping up, it’s time for another set of Mega Tins to compile all the best cards over that period, for a more economical way to compile what otherwise would be an expensive deck to build. With Yugi and Kaiba at the forefront of the sets this year, this means we’ll have an even easier time finishing off our retro builds, with some brand new cards thrown in for good measure.

As with every annual tin, each one has its own set of guaranteed promo cards outside of the three 16 card Mega Packs. As you would guess, Yugi’s tin focuses on the cards that his deck was famous for, with some new ones thrown in to make them more competitive to the modern game. Aside from Ultra and Secret Rare variants the old school Dark Magician design and Yugi’s God Card, Slifer The Sky Dragon respectively, the sought after Ebon High Magician from The Dark Illusion and Performapal Pendulum Sorcerer, the highlight of the Breakers of Shadow set are the real stars, ensuring you can get your hands on these cornerstone cards. Ebon in particular brings Dark Magician to the realm of Xyz monsters, allowing you to play Quick Play Spells and Trap Cards from your hand as long as it has Xyz material to use, protecting them from being destroyed on the field. Throw in its ability to Special Summon a Spellcaster when its destroyed, and you get a card that can spell disaster for the opponent.

In addition to these monsters, the set has two original cards that can only be found in this tin. D/D/D Flame King Genghis is a Fusion Monster that can only be summoned when fusing two D/D monsters, but Genghis gives you an easy way to bring them back. As long as you Special Summon D/D monster, the Flame King can bring back a D/D monster from the Graveyard once per turn. The hard part when it comes to this combo might be to keep him alive, but if he is destroyed, you can add a Dark Contract card from the Graveyard to your Hand, giving you a bit of retribution. Dragonox, The Empowered Warrior, can also make the Graveyard your playground, with its ability to Special Summon one Spellcaster with 2000 or less attack in Face Down Defense Position. Its meager 1500 attack and defense makes it easy to kill, but as a Pendulum Monster, it can also be played as a Scale 7 Spell on either side of the Pendulum Zone. When placed there, Dragonox can be discarded to end the opponent’s battle phase when they declare an attack. So basically, Negate Attack in Monster form.

Over on Kaiba’s side of the field, the power obsessed CEO of Kaibacorp has his own upgrades since the last time we saw him. While we would never expect Obelisk The Tormentor or his trademark Blue Eyes White Dragon to be left behind in a set like this, his new Synchro Monster, Blue-Eyes Spirit Dragon, is the highlight among the promo cards. As one of the top cards in the Shining Victories set, not only does it pack a punch attack wise at 2500, but once on the field via Synchro Summoning, it can negate the activation of effects in the Graveyard, which has become a popular tactic in recent versions of the game. Tributing it also lets you Special Summon any Light type Synchro Monster during either player’s turn, which can get you out of some serious jams if played right. The trick is knowing when to use it, since the monster is destroyed at the End Phase of the turn it was summoned.

Rounding out Kaiba’s promo cards are two original cards and an old favorite. Starting with Ghost Ogre & Snow Rabbit, a Secret Rare from the Crossed Souls set from 2015, this card is essentially a free Solemn card disguised as a monster. If it’s either on your field or IN YOUR HAND, you can destroy the card that was activated, allowing you to catch your opponent off guard. As far as the original entries, D/D/D King Gust Alexander is a Synchro card that has a similar effect to Yugi’s Genghis, but with more more flexibility and durability. With 2500 attack points, he can Special Summon a D/D Monster from the Graveyard when you Special Summon OR Normal Summon a D/D Monster. While he doesn’t have a secondary effect like Genghis’ Dark Contract ability, I’m liking Gust better since you can swarm much easier with his ability. Lastly, Aether, The Evil Empowering Dragon, is a Scale 4 Pendulum Monster with some nasty effects. By Special or Normal Summoning this level six monster, it allows you to flat out banish a monster on the field with no cost outside of what you used to summon it. Once in the Pendulum Zone, it allows you to destroy one card on the field once per turn by banishing an Empowered Warrior monster from your own Graveyard. Once it gets going, it looks like Aether would be a huge threat with the right support cards protecting it.

Rounding out the sets are the Mega Packs themselves, which each include three all star boosters. Containing highlights from the Crossed Souls, Clash of Rebellions, Dimension of Chaos and Breakers of Shadow sets, these cover a lot of ground. You’ll find plenty to love, such as the many Performapal cards, additional support for the Blackwing and Red Dragon Archfiend lines of monsters, and individual powerhouses such as the Odd Eyes Rebellion Dragon to name a few in the long list of viable cards. There’s no better way to catch up with the recent card releases than through this set. My personal pull highlights included Neptabyss, The Atlantean Prince, which single-handedly revived Atlantean and Mermail monsters earlier this year, and Jar of Avarice, which lets you recycle five Graveyard cards followed by a one card draw. If someone with luck as bad as mine can draw those, then there’s no reason why other pulls out there won’t be even better!

That about does it for the 2015-2016 YuGiOh season. What were your highs and lows, and what are your favorite cards from these sets? Sound off below and let us know!

October’s Lootcrate is here, and what better way to celebrate the season of all things spooky than by featuring some of horror’s greatest faces! From Leatherface to Freddy Krueger, and a playful reminder of what ended up at the end of Negan’s bat far too soon, here’s what we unboxed this month!

img_5405

First off, this month’s shirt features the man that everyone loves to hate with Lucille in hand. The premiere of The Walking Dead Season 7 is still fresh in our minds, which is why I can’t help but want to wear this everywhere. As a player for Negan’s Sluggers, you’re sure to get plenty of awkward laughter, mean looks and the occaisional call of your apparent trolling of the general public. One way or another, you’ll get plenty of attention with this eye popping shirt.

img_5406

Serial killers have never looked so adorable. This supder deformed Leatherface plush straight out of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has never looked more huggable, which is a far cry from his vicious character in the films. That smile is hard to resist, but you might want to be careful when you’re cuddling with your new buddy late at night.

img_5410

Stepping away from the viciousness of zombies and murderers, The Legion Of Regrettable Supervillains takes an interesting look at some rogues that you might have never knew existed. From the obscure to the strange and the flat out grotesque, comic fans and horror fans alike should find plenty of trivia to enjoy as they uncover some of the lesser known bad guys throughout comic book history.

img_5411

On the subject of reading materials, this month’s Lootcrate Magazine ramps up the horror theme with a feature on the Walkers from The Walking Dead. Interviews with Emily Andras and Tim Rozon from Wynonna Earp and a section letting us find out whether or not we could survive a horror movie round out the cover content, with some shocking revelations in the latter article. Spoiler alert: I would die!

img_5407

For the old school horror fan who wants to fly their camp pride high, this Camp Crystal Lake banner will surely attract anyone nearby who happens to be wearing a hockey mask, a grey jumpsuit, or carrying a machete. Friday The 13th may only come around once in a while, but you can remind yourself of the horrors that Jason put those poor kids through every time you see it flying.

img_5412

From one horror icon to another, Michael Myers is the highlight of this month’s pin, featuring a half mask and half pumpkin design, with the killer’s signature knife splitting the two images. Use this to remind your siblings what can happen to them when they make their siblings angry. Some grudges can be hard to let go.

img_5413

Lastly, my favorite item of the box has to be this amazing set of Freddy Krueger chopsticks, held together by his signature leather glove. Now you can eat ramen and show off your amazing rice picking skills in style, making tools for murder your eating utensils of choice. They’re so great, that my cat, Piddles, (or P for short), couldn’t stay away either. Maybe the claws remind her of someone?

img_5409

Once the contents are gone, the box this time around becomes a zombie mask. For those with no idea what to do for a potential costume, all you have to do is pop out the zombie face, and you’ll be a ready made Walker! All you have some ratty clothes on and make sure to stumble around with no sense of direction or coordination. Naturally, this is a perfect fit for me.

img_5414

That’s it for October! The Freddy chop sticks were my favorite items this month, but what were yours? Let us know in the comments, and tell us what you hope will arrive in next month’s crate! As always, make sure to use the promo code “Geekscape” to get a discount on your next subscription!

I don’t know about you but I’ve always been a bigger fan of Summerslam than Wrestlemania. It just always feels like Wrestlemania is always super hyped up only to be a letdown, Summerslam I tend to go in with low expectations only to be shocked by how good the show is.

This year the card for Summerslam is STACKED. There are 4-5 matches that should/could be the main event. It should be a great night! Before we start though it should be noted that a few matches were announced before our article deadline so beyond the 11 matches below there is also going to be an American Alpha/Usos/Hype Bros vs The Ascension/Vaudevillians/Breezango match (yes the one you already saw on Smackdown) as well as Sami & Neville vs The Dudleyz. Molly wanted the record to show that news of the second match made her cry with joy that two of her favorites were having a match together and ran to hug her Elite Neville figure.

MATCH #1: CARMELLA, BECKY LYNCH AND NAOMI VS NATALYA, ALEXA BLISS & TBD

What you need to know about the Match:
I’ll avoid breaking down everything about each of these women. This match was basically an after thought to get the Smackdown women’s roster on TV. Eva Marie was on the match until 48 hours ago when she failed her wellness policy leaving things up in the air.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – I’m still not even sure if this going to be a handicap match or not. I’d love for it to be a return of Emma or something. Either way I’m putting money in that it comes down to Becky getting a pin on Nattie for the win.

Molly May – Lynch, Mella, and Naomi cause you done goofed up, Eva, and I guess whoever’s booking Becky is done watching me suffer and too occupied with wondering what they’re gonna replace this episode of Total Divas with. Becky will make Nattie tap to the ‘dis-arm-her’ for retribution and to give this match at least some semblance of meaning.

Josh Jackson – I *thought* that Eva would no show the match, only to grace us with her presence mid contest and steal the win for her team. With her recent suspension however, it leaves a lot of possibilities up in the air. My gut tells me someone will replace her, but with no heels on NXT even being close to ready for that spot, I’m guessing they just work Eva’s abscence into the story of the match, leaving the heels at a 2 on 3 advantage before succumbing to Becky, Naomi and Carmella.

Derek Kraneveldt – I do enjoy Natalya in-ring, but any team with Becky Lynch on it is the team for me. She consistently puts on fantastic performances, and I’d really, really like to see her take the belt from Sasha at some point.  I’m not overly familiar with Alexa Bliss or Carmella, and I don’t hate Eva Marie as much as everyone else does (well, who is now no longer even in the match), so at the very least it’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out. This one seems like it could end in submission for sure.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – It’s really hard to book any of these girls right now but I hope that we get a Smackdown women’s belt or something because Lynch and Bliss both need title reigns already. Neither even got to hold the NXT title and both deserved it.

Molly May – This match kind of makes me want to scream. Because it’s a glaring reminder that even though the Women’s Championship match this year is main event caliber, the WWE doesn’t know what the hell to do with women if they aren’t chasing a belt or a boy. I’ll take a six-pack challenge, 3 individual singles matches, battle royal that ends in Nia Jax cleaning house, a mini tournament where the winner gets to kick “All Wellness Everything”’s ass for denying us a women’s match every week Smackdown’s been live. I hope all those things happen on Smackdown in the weeks that follow Summerslam! Can you imagine; potentially 3 women’s feuds going on at once?! Just PLEASE, anything but another. Damnass. Pointless. Tag match!

Josh Jackson – The women will get their own title soon, which has essentially been confirmed. So this match won’t really matter, since I’m expecting all six girls to be in the mix. Let’s hope Becky finally pulls off that elusive title win, but I’m guessing Eva might sneak away with it to build up more heat on her.

MATCH #2 ENZO & CASS VS. JERICHOWENS

What you need to know about the Match:

Enzo & Cass – Take the New Age Outlaws and mix them with the cast of the Jersey shore and it gives you one of the most popular additions to WWE this year. They’re basically the wrestling version of Joey the Rat and Frankie the Enforcer from Boy Meets World.

Jerichowens – I’m not sure if they have an actual team name but what the hell else do you call the combination of Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens?

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – There’s no reason not to let Enzo and Cass win this but it kills me to say it… this is one of the few who cares matches on an otherwise stacked card. There’s really no point to this match beyond getting Enzo and Cass on the pay-per-view because they’re super over but they’re faces and can’t possibly go against the Tag Team Champs who are also faces. I do see Owens backstabbing Jericho at the end of this. Kevin Owens hates losing, little known fact.

Molly May – Enzo and Cass win do to Owens abandoning Jericho and realizing what an asshole he’s been

Josh Jackson – Enzo and Cass are over to the point where a loss won’t hurt them, especially against guys as credible as Y2KO. Owens also needs a big win coming off his loss against Sami last month. Enzo takes the fall as Owens wins with a Pop Up Powerbomb after Jericho finds an underhanded way to take Cass out of the picture.

Derek Kraneveldt –  I have no idea who’s going to win this one. Heck, I don’t even know who I’d like to see win this one.  Both are phenomenal pairings, and while its obvious that Enzo and Cass will far outlast the team of Y2KO (remember how long Y2AJ stuck around for), I’d really, really like to see Y2KO celebrate some wins.  That said, Enzo may be better on the mic than Jericho himself, and if I could see this feud continue after this Sunday, I would absolutely love for it to do just that.  No clue on this one, but if I had to guess, I’d say that Enzo and Cass take it.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – I firmly believe this match is strictly to build a Owens/Jericho feud. It will end with Owens killing Jericho (metaphorically). Jericho has a Fozzy Future in his sights and what better way to write him off than a giant injury that gives Owens another name to add to his list of friends he’s put into the hospital.

Molly May –  Look at how guilty Owens looks when Jericho says they’re like brothers. No one does ‘the desolate look’ as well as Owens; that look of “I’ve accepted that I destroyed my relationship with my best friend and now I’m in a whatever tag match and he’s sort of on the card but I’m too proud to admit I screwed up and now I can’t go back”. Watch that intro to RAW back-to-back with the last Steen vs Generico match. It’s heartbreaking.

That said, why are Owens and Jericho even teaming up? Over a mutual dislike of Enzo and Cass? Maybe this is when Owens realizes how terribly he’s gone about all this and lets his fellow NXT grads get the win. So the next night on RAW, Owens can declare that the ‘new era’ is superior to Jericho’s ‘attitude’ and he’s the rightful face of the new era. Jericho is old news and was holding him back. Have Kevin earn (or better yet, beg Stephanie McMahon for) number one contendership to the Universal title. Have Jericho do the same with Foley, begging to fight Rollins or Bálor while acting like he doesn’t remember putting down Mick. Cause confused dad Jericho is the best Jericho.

Josh Jackson – This feud will surely continue for at least another month, with excellent back and forth promos to continue building the hype. Regardless of who wins, Enzo and Cass can’t be far from the tag title picture. How you doin’?

20160815_SSlam_MATCH_CesaroSheamus--75bc6ab940c75fa9263b6b9d4bb7b051

MATCH #3 CESARO VS. SHEAMUS

What you need to know about the Match:

Cesaro – To explain Cesaro it’d feel like I’m making it up. He’s a big dude in tearaway suits who’s finisher is swinging people around … sounds dumb on paper but it’s fucking awesome in practice. He’s also one of the best wrestlers in the fucking company.

Sheamus – He’s tall, Irish and was in the newest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie. He looks like when Dr. Zoidberg is in The Frenzy

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – Hey Guys! We’re gonna get to see 6 more of these matches over the next few months. Isn’t that exciting! The first 3 or 4 simply wasn’t enough. Cesaro won a shit ton of them already so Sheamus will most likely win this one, Summerslam tends to be a pretty heel victory centric pay-per-view.

Molly May – Sheamus wins. Cesaro’s been on a hot streak and if we’re really supposed to believe that this is an even match deserving of a series, Sheamus could definitely use the win on this one. After the fight spills out into the crowd, the two will beat each other to the point where neither can stand. Sheamus makes it in, appears to be getting the count out victory, until Cesaro makes it in and runs straight into a final brogue kick.

Josh Jackson – Why we’re starting a best of seven series after these guys have fought twice in three weeks is mind boggling. Having no announced reward to fight for is even worse. Even still, considering Sheamus is 0-2 against the Swiss Superman, he has to win this one. I say clean with a Brogue Kick to build his credibility as we move forward in this series.

Derek Kraneveldt –  This seems like the weird random matchup of popular superstars that creative couldn’t really fit anywhere else. I don’t really see what everyone else sees in Cesaro. His return was the first time I’d ever seen him in a match, and he just seems kind of… cheesy. His uppercuts look weird and super fake, the Cesaro Swing seems like something a father would play with their child (he doesn’t even throw them), and his taunts look like a weird kid pretending to punch things. On the other hand, now that Sheamus just has a regular beard, I’m down. He wins this round.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – We had the audacity to cheer for Cesaro and form our own sections in his honor. He will feud with Sheamus until the sound of sirens make us start screaming uncontrolably “NO NOT AGAIN” We are all  Pavlov dogs in Vince McMahons demented test.

Molly May – We have to watch this match 6 more times. I don’t think I can watch any two wrestlers with little to no history between them in 7 different matches over the course of months. And I can watch a lot of Cesaro matches. Who’s really winning here.

Josh Jackson – This feud will likely carry into Raw’s next PPV, where Cesaro will ultimately win in seven, (as it always does in wrestling). Regardless, I see Cesaro ending up on Smackdown one way or another, while Sheamus continues to float around aimlessly.

MATCH #4 BROCK LESNAR VS. RANDY ORTON

What you need to know about the Match:

Randy Orton – Randy thinks he’s a snake and spends most of his free time being a meme.

Brock Lesnar – Brock is a former UFC Champion who once murdered a car with his bare hands. He’s the most believably scary wrestlers in history.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly –  If there’s one thing I’m positive about it’s that Brock Lesnar is going to walk out still the undefeated beast. You can’t spend two+ years building Brock into this monster who dismantled John Cena, The Undertaker and Roman Reigns only for Randy Orton to beat him. That’s just dumb. Orton won’t lose clean though, Bray Wyatt is gonna come and fuck shit up.

Molly May – Brock wins with at least 7 German suplexes, 3 F-5’s and 2 middle fingers. Orton gets at least one good near fall off an RKO outta nowhere, but c’mon, Orton’s not ending Brock’s winning streak. I’m also gonna piggy-back off Matt’s booking and say Bray Wyatt gets involved in this match. You don’t show Orton and Wyatt having a stare down DURING A COMMERCIAL BREAK if it doesn’t have some significance. Give Orton a fighting chance until Bray gets involved and then there’s no question that Brock’s gonna pin Orton clean.

Josh Jackson – As much as I would love one of my all time favorites in Orton go over one of my least favorites of all time in Lesnar, it’s not going to happen. Orton has little to gain from a victory, while Lesnar will continue to be protected until their new chosen one will slay the beast on a much bigger stage. Still, an F5 into an RKO is almost guaranteed, while I’m crossing my fingers for a return of the punt, fines be damned. Aside from that, don’t be shocked if we get the same lazy Brock match where he suplexes his opponent a thousand times before wrapping things up with an F5, minus the RKO reversal.

Derek Kraneveldt – This one is super tough, mostly because I have never seen Orton wrestle, and in the eight months that I’ve been watching WWE I’ve only seen Lesnar a handful of times, and his only match that I wasn’t disappointed with was the Ambrose v. Reigns v. Lesnar match from Fastlane (when Brock suplexed both of his appointments at once, man).

I think that this one is going to Orton. He’s been out for so long that it would be crazy not to give this huge a superstar a win on his return, and while Lesnar had a ton of buzz after winning at UFC 200… A couple of positive blood tests quickly turned that buzz negative.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – People seem to think an Orton loss will somehow hurt him, but I doubt that. As for Brock, he needs to be beaten by someone that’s been under utilized. Randy Orton will feud with Bray, and lose. Brock will also want Bray since Wyatt has made his win a little less legit. Eventually we will get a match with Brock vs Bray Wyatt and Bray does the impossible and pins Brock. It’s at that moment that Bray cuts a promo against the dead man about how Bray Wyatt could beat the one man Taker couldn’t. This leads to match where Wyatt retires Taker.

Molly May – Hopefully this leads to a more vicious viper on Smackdown. With face vs face main eventing on the Smackdown side at Summerslam, we need a good vile heel like Orton was in 2010. Have Bray and Orton feud and, like Wyatt did when his main goal in feuds was to recruit members of his family, influence Orton and manipulate him to remember how much more fun it is to ruin people’s lives than to go after championships. Lesnar will follow this match with more part-timing and not giving a shit about your kids. He’ll probably stay pissed off enough to still wanna take on Wyatt at Wrestlemania down the line so we can get the match that had to be postponed.

Josh Jackson –Lesnar will disappear from main roster storylines until the Royal Rumble, while Orton fills the Cena roll of gate keeping veteran. A Bray Wyatt feud would be something new once he’s out of the title picture, but I’m thinking Orton will sell his injuries and rest up for a few weeks until that program is ready to start.

The-Miz-Apollo-Crews-Summerslam

MATCH #5 THE MIZ VS APOLLO CREWS

What you need to know about the Match:

The Miz – Former Reality Star turned into douchey C-level actor who thinks he’s an A-lister. He’s the best character player in WWE today

Apollo Crews – This man should be one of the biggest guys in WWE but they don’t know what do with him. He is a genuine ball of positivity.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – The Miz is no longer the Champ come next Smackdown. I’m saying it. The Miz has done an excellent job at the Chicken Shit heel role he was born to play but they need to do something with Apollo. He’s officially less utilized than Tyler Breeze or Neville at this point.

Molly May – Maryse distracts the referee while Miz gets in a low blow-eye rake-Mid-South as hell-cheap shot to get the win. After Crews clearly gets a 3 count that the ref missed.

Josh Jackson – I love The Miz, and feel like he should keep the IC Title for a long time. Yet, with how this feud has been built, if Miz wins, then Apollo far too damaged to be worth it. The story being told is that Miz has barely noticed who his opponent is, since he’s not taking the young star seriously. Smackdown is supposed to be the show of opportunity, and that will show when Apollo earns his first title in the WWE.

Derek Kraneveldt – Apollo Crews is a pretty interesting superstar to me. He seems so freaking physically talented, and is even fine on the mic the few times that I’ve actually heard him… But I still don’t really have a sense of his character. At this point he has some great in-ring moves, but isn’t interesting at all beyond that.

With that being the case, I’d love to see The Miz win. I hated the dude when I first started watching, but he definitely grew on me as the pretentious A-Lister once again became intercontinental champion (though I’m sad that he took it from Ryder) and began his newest reign.  Also, his Facebook page is hilarious.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – Obviously there will be a Miz rematch and it’ll be good, it will be followed by another higher older profile feud with someone like Kane or Del Rio but the point where he will really start to shine will be in a big match against Baron Corbin. I could see him losing the belt to Baron maybe around the time of the Rumble.

Molly May – The Miz has had some awesome matches against the new breed of wrestlers in WWE. Remember how fans joked that Miz should be retroactively made a member of the Ring of Honor 2010 roster following the Fatal 4 Way with Cesaro, Owens, and Zayn at Extreme Rules? Actually make Miz have the mentality that he ranks amongst the best of NXT. If you can’t beat em, join em. And Miz knows he can’t beat em. So it leads to increasingly paranoid champ Miz who only gets wins by the skin of his teeth and blatant cheating. He freaks out worse and worse as the fluke wins pile up and gets messier at hiding his insecurities. Until a more confident Baron Corbin, or an underdog-turned-contender Kalisto, or a rematch with a more experienced Apollo Crews takes the belt off Miz by the end of the year.

Josh Jackson – As always, a rematch will play out, which I’ll go out on a limb for and say that Miz will regain it then. Apollo will ultimately lose the feud, but Miz will be forced to bring his A game, elevating the Apollo in the process.

Roman-Reigns-Rusev-SummerSlam-850x540

MATCH #6 RUSEV VS ROMAN REIGNS

What you need to know about the Match:

Rusev – The Bulgarian Brute fighting in honor of Russia. Just think Rocky IV, that’s really all you need to know about Rusev.

Roman Reigns – In 2013 Reigns was part of the Shield and everyone loved him. Then he opened his mouth and we realized he had the personality of a Jar of Mayo.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly –  Rusev retains. Please god let Rusev retain. We got this match as the main event on Monday with Reigns winning… that was Reigns win. Now it’s Rusev’s turn to wreck house.

Molly May – Reigns passes out after refusing to tap to Rusev’s ‘Accolade’ which he holds for no less than 5 straight minutes, while screaming for no less than 7 straight minutes because Reigns accidentally spears Lana

Josh Jackson – Well… Rusev has to be my favorite wrestler on the main roster, while Roman is one of my least. Still, I figured there’s no way that Rusev carries the US Title past Sunday, considering the company still seems dead set on pushing their golden boy to the moon.

That was, until last Monday.
Since Roman got the clean win on free TV, (and sucking out most of the enthusiasm for their PPV match in the process), Rusev will retain one way or another. Whether its via DQ, or by cheating for a dirty win, Rusev will survive for a little bit longer.

Derek Kraneveldt – This has been a fantastic feud thus far.  I’m a Roman fan (the only WWE shirt I have at this point is a Reigns one, for instance), and honestly, that suspension may have been the best thing to happen to him in some time.

Since his return, the crowd has actually seemed into him (and oh god that insane Roman booing is annoying and it makes me feel so bad for him), and his screen time each week has been some of the most interesting since I began watching. He’s building instead of simply being the ‘Big Dog’, and he’s all the better for it.  That said, I think Rusev is taking it. The feud and Roman’s return still seem a little too fresh for a title change, so I’d imagine that the feud continues beyond this weekend, and Roman takes it in the rematch.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – Rusev needs to just wreck house with no one winning that belt. Who takes down the Giant? Well hear me out on this but … Mojo Rawley. Yeah I know sounds stupid, probably will be… but at Battleground after Rusev smashed Zack Ryder into a day-glow stain in the middle of the ring Mojo came out and stared Rusev down. Rusev (and the rest of the world) immediately got to joking about how stupid that pairing is. Rusev commented multiple times about needing a “real challenger”. I see Mojo and Rusev being in a Survivor Series match together in which Mojo emasculates Rusev. This causes Ru-Ru to demand that he prove he is the better man and he’s willing to risk the US Title changing shows. Spoiler Alert… that shit is changing shows at The Rumble.

Molly May – I want Rusev to go on a tear. Have this win breathe new life into him. Make him realize how close he was to losing the championship, and possibly losing Lana. He won’t be made a fool of anymore and he’s going to wreck Sami Zayn in Sami’s attempt to earn a title the right way (unlike Kevin who’s sucking up for Universal Championship shots) and prove he could win the title that caused his shoulder injury. And wreck Neville in a showcase that he’s a fantastic technical/submission wrestler on top of being the best high flyer (AND a high profile match would do good things for the superstar that I expect will be the cornerstone of the cruiserweight division). And then wreck Darren Young after he’s cheated his way to the #1 contendership spot without Coach Bob Backlund’s knowledge. I expect Roman’s gonna get a rematch for no real reason, and I could see him enter a feud with Owens over who really deserves to represent the new era (surprise, it’s neither of them cause the real representatives are already fighting over the belt at Summerslam). Mostly I want Roman to get increasingly angry as the odds are stacked against him and his losses pile up and Ambrose and Rollins’ reigns keep get longer and longer…

Josh Jackson –Even if Rusev retains, he won’t be champion for long. Roman will get a rematch next month, with The Big Dog pulling through and winning the title on his second try. My guess is he’ll hold the title until the company is ready to put him back into the title picture, while Rusev moves on to a filler feud against the new WWE Universal Champion.

wwe_summerslam_new_day_club

MATCH #7 THE NEW DAY VS THE CLUB

What you need to know about the Match:

The New Day – When this tag team debuted they were potentially the most hated thing in WWE at the time… then they found their footing in pop culture references and wacky antics and EXPLODED. They’re our current WWE Champions

The Club – This duo were HUGE in Japan but super under utilized by WWE, lately they’ve been making testicle jokes on Raw.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly –  New Day had a good run but it’s time for them to lose and The Club could use a good push to make people feel slightly threatened by them again. The only way I see New Day retaining is if they have it look like Kofi and Xavier are beaten and then Big E makes his triumphant return to save them. But that’s unlikely, there’s no more stories to tell with New Day as champions.

Molly May – I think The Club will win… but I want the New Day to win. THE CLUB WINS WITH CHEATING. Lots and lots of cheating. And the fastest “Magic Killer” you’ve ever seen (cause no move was more appropriately named for ending New Day’s reign)

Josh Jackson –Man… I really wanted this to finally be the time where The Club finally lives up to their massive paychecks and take the tag team titles. Considering how little they’ve accomplished since their debut however, and their first big post brand split feud revolving around ruptured balls… I just can’t see a change of the guard take place under these circumstances. New Day takes it after Big E returns for the destraction.

Derek Kraneveldt – If Gallows and Anderson win I will not watch wrestling anymore.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – The New Day will obviously get a rematch this time with Big E by their side but they will lose. Tag Team after Tag Team will lose in their quest for the Tag Belts. The Club will brag about how no one can touch them and American Alpha will continue to not lose on Smackdown. It’ll be decided at that Wrestlemania these two unstoppable teams will come head to head. American Alpha walk out as Tag Team Champions and bring it to Smackdown.

Molly May – Being down Big E evens the playing field, and if this was Anderson and Gallows straight off the heels of Wrestle Kingdom 10, I’d call a Club win, no question. I could talk all day about how much I love New Japan, especially the Bullet Club in all its’ variations (my first New Japan match was Omega vs Devitt for the Light Heavyweight title so, yeah, duh). There’s nothing I would love more than to see The New Day ousted by a fully reunited, mad strong Biz Cliz after New Day’s outstanding run. In the best situation I could’ve booked, The Club would’ve debuted as Bálor Club at NXT Takeover: Dallas, we’d have gotten heel Finn by the draft after a slow burn turn on NXT TV, and he’d fight a babyface Rollins at Summerslam in a build for the eventual Rollins vs Triple H. But now, to try booking all that is way too much too soon.

So assuming The Club wins, they shouldn’t lose ONCE with those titles. They should blatantly cheat in every match and hold on to those titles at all costs and appear un-fuck-withable. Make the New Day consider turning to their old tricks and start cheating again, too. Rework how Enzo and Cass were booked in NXT; they lose in their first PPV match for the title, have to re-earn their shot in a build to take them as a serious threat, and at one of the shared big 4 PPVs, bring out their Smackdown secret weapon Carmella and give the Realest Guys the clean win. Always keep some space between the Club and Bálor, AND all of them and Styles. Until all 4 are holding gold. Then as ‘Mania rolls around and they’re title-less while their old buddies are at the top, start to make the Club question where their loyalties really lie.

Josh Jackson – I have no idea to be honest. The Club needs to take some time away from the spotlight and rebuild, possibly by tearing down some lower tier tag teams and come off as a threat again. As of now, it’s very hard to take them seriously, especially if you don’t know about their history in Japan. As for New Day, Big E will return to the fold while the team continues to hold the tag team titles until Enzo and Cass are ready to take them. Probably in a multi man match since I don’t see a face vs face match as of yet. Either way, this tag division is starved on both shows since the split, and need some kind of talent injection quick.

Sasha_20Banks_20Charlotte_20SummerSlam.0

MATCH #8 SASHA BANKS VS. CHARLOTTE

What you need to know about the Match:

Sasha Banks – Sasha is the current women’s champion, snoop dogg’s cousin and one of the dopest women’s wrestlers out there.

Charlotte – Charlotte was the previous Women’s Champion and daughter of Ric Flair. She’s a real spoiled bitch (at least the character, I’m sure the real life person is lovely).

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – Sasha Banks is absolutely retaining here. I don’t know if it will be a clean finish however, based on a recent segment on Raw I see Dana Brook intentionally costing Charlotte the belt. Maybe even a run in from Bayley and Becky Lynch to make it go full four horsewomen.

Molly May – Since Dana Brooke is banned from ringside, Ric Flair makes an appearance to help Charlotte win. But not to worry, because Bayley runs in to try to stop him. Tell me you don’t wanna see a bayley-to-belly on the nature boy so Sasha can retain the title in Brooklyn.

Josh Jackson –With Dana banned from ringside, we should finally get the Charlotte match many of us have been waiting on for a long time. Even still, there’s no way Sasha loses the title so soon after her big moment. Charlotte will prove herself as a worthy performer on her own, but Sasha will retain with the Banks Statement.

Derek Kraneveldt – These two have so much history, and I really cannot wait to see them get back into the ring.  I like Charlotte and her superiority complex, but I found her title run fairly boring and extremely repetitive.

Almost every month, I’d be sure that THIS TIME Charlotte would lose, and fairly… Only to be proven wrong time and time again. It got to the point where the methods of cheating weren’t even entertaining anymore, and the best part of the matches were simply when they were over. She even disowned her father… and the cheating continued.

Then out of nowhere, she lost it, and it wasn’t even on a PPV. Tensions have been building ever since, and while myself and likely every other member of the WWE Universe thinks and hopes that the belt stays in Sasha’s hands, we’re behind excited for what could be the best match of the evening.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – I’d love to see Dana allign herself back up with Emma. Perhaps after breaking from Charlotte she starts setting her sights on Sasha. I’m definitely seeing the next pay-per-view featuring a Sasha vs. Dana match (or even better Sasha vs. Emma if she’s healed up and ready to go). I eagerly await when we get a Sasha vs. Nia series (because that will happen).

Molly May – More than likely Charlotte’s future is in a feud to elevate Dana. Now since Ric tried to help in Brooklyn despite being disowned, and Dana was no help at all, Charlotte hates them both. Perfect reason for Ric to take Dana under his wing and make her ‘the next nature girl’. When Emma makes her return, she asks Dana what the hell happened and questions if they were ever friends at all. That leads to Emma vs Dana and the two of them realigning in the end. Hopefully this also garners more sympathy for Charlotte and a slow face turn while Sasha gets cockier and cockier as her winning streak gets more impressive. I don’t want Sasha going full heel since she’s still so well liked… but I also want Sasha vs Bayley for Wrestlemania…

So you know those “we want Sasha” chants? They become “heyyyyy we want so Bayley!” chants. Bayley is main roster official now, and she’s so loved, and wanted in every match, and getting every opportunity and “she hasn’t even won a match yet!” Sasha screams, cause wtf, Bayley? Think you’re so great, being a good person and hugging everyone. Bayley presents herself very humbly, but wins matches flawlessly. She beats Sasha with ease on RAW in a non-title match after weeks of build and it drives Sasha insane. To the point where she refuses to defend the title against Bayley until Bayley “proves” herself while Sasha runs roughshod on everyone who questions The Boss.

Josh Jackson –I would have said Charlotte would move on to a feud away from the title with Paige, but considering how hard she partied on her birthday, The Queen City’s own will have to take a back seat for a bit. Sasha will inevitably reunite with Bayley on the main roster, only for The Boss to turn heel, (which she desperately needs), and will reignite her legendary Takeover feud.

summerslam-john-cena-aj-styles

MATCH #9 JOHN CENA VS AJ STYLES

What you need to know about the Match:

AJ Styles – After being the indie darling for years he debuted at the Royal Rumble to a crowd who lost their mind but slowly went from Face everyone loved to heel everyone loved to hate.

John Cena – You know who John Cena is.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – I’m pretty sure the last time we saw John Cena at a Summerslam he basically got tossed around for 10 minutes. I don’t think we’re going to see Cena eat it here… but I REALLLY want to. I don’t even hate Cena, it’s just the right decision and I’ll tell you why

Molly May – AJ Styles nails the Styles Clash after denying The Club’s help. Styles has already suffered one major loss at Wrestlemania this year and used Anderson and Gallows for a chunk of his wins since. It’s his first statement in proving “I don’t have the Club, and I don’t need the Club”

Josh Jackson –This match is likely to steal the show if their previous efforts have been any indication. This will be the first match in the pair’s series of bouts that will (likely), have no interference. Just a good old fashioned one on one fight. No excuses, and no doubt who the better man will be. This scenario usually means Cena will “overcome the odds” and pull out the victory, but considering how Smackdown ended, not to mention the fact that Cena will be gone to film the second season of his reality show, AJ will get to #BeatUpJohnCena on the company’s second biggest stage.

Derek Kraneveldt – I’m a huge Cena fan. As cool as AJ is, as someone who didn’t follow him around the world, he hasn’t really done all that much to wow me yet. He also brought Gallows and Anderson with him, who I feel like may just be the most boring tag team that I’ve ever seen. I’m alone in this one too, aren’t I?

With The Club busy in their own match, I feel like this will be the true 1 v. 1 that we were all hoping to see a few months back. That first match was fantastic before the interruption, and I really can’t wait to see this one. I think Cena is taking it home, but I’m beyond uncertain of what this matches outcome will actually be.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – After AJ Styles absolutely and definitively has wrecked the face that runs the place he has his eyes on one and only one prize: the world belt. I’d like to see Dean retain until Survivor Series but this could honestly go down at at one of the Smackdown pay-per-views… but Styles is going to be wearing that belt in time for the Royal Rumble. More on this fantasy booking in a second…

Molly May – Like I’ve mentioned in my Bálor and Club write ups, let’s see Styles become more of a loner who knows he doesn’t need help because he’s too damn good for help. Really press that he doesn’t need some stupid WWE title cause he’s already beaten Cena! He’s a former IWGP Champ! This new era would be NOTHING if not for him. No one is on his level… not even Dean Ambrose. This clearly pisses off Ambrose, who demands a match with Styles. While Styles just keeps ‘conveniently’ missing out on opportunities to challenge Ambrose in favor of crushing an easier opponent. Daniel Bryan can’t sit back anymore, reasoning that Styles is taking the honor and respect out of wrestling, and puts the two in a match at the Royal Rumble. Which Styles wins. Cena, meanwhile, should get in at least one great PPV match for the title with Ambrose. But after that, hopefully Cena makes waves in the Intercontinental title picture to further make life harder for The Miz. The United States Open Challenge was arguably the best series Cena has had in his entire career, and I’d like to see the IC title heightened in such a way similar. Preferably not just a rehash of the open challenge, but definitely something along those lines.

Josh Jackson – Cena will fade away for awhile before coming back to his top guy spot. The only thing I can see for him in the future is to get that long awaited Undertaker Mania match, or win the Rumble and square off against Roman Reigns in a passing of the torch match. Between now and then, I don’t see him doing anything major. It’s clear his time is winding down.

AJ on the other hand, will be firmly launched into the main event. Signs are pointing to him feuding with the loser of the WWE World Heavyweight Championship match, and eventually winning the title after that business is wrapped up.

MATCH #10 DEAN AMBROSE VS. DOLPH ZIGGLER

What you need to know about the Match:

Dean Ambrose – Before he was a member of the Shield he was a Death match maniac. He’s our current world champion and one of the most legit unhinged a-holes in WWE

Dolph Ziggler – Think of the lead singer of every 80’s hair metal band… during the mid-90s. Now stop imagining Chris Jericho and think Shawn Michaels instead. Congrats you now know who Dolph Ziggler is.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – Dean Ambrose is going to continue to retain, it’s a no-brainer honestly. But it’s going to be a great match, hell, it might be the match of the night. It has the potential to be… I mean, almost every match has the potential to be on this card … almost (sorry Cesaro, Sheamus, Enzo, Cass, Jericho and Owens). This will establish Dean as a serious champion and maybe turn Dolph into a bitter washed up man of the old era.

Molly May – Just let Ambrose get a clean pin and look like a legit champ please.

Josh Jackson –I love both of these guys. I’m also a sucker for the underdog, which is why I would LOVE if Ziggler were to win. However, Dean just won the title by beating two of the company’s golden boys in Reigns and Rollins, and there’s no chance that he loses this soon to someone who couldn’t beat Baron Corbin a month ago. Ziggler will dig deep and prove he belongs, but will come up short when Ambrose retains.

Derek Kraneveldt – I may be alone in saying this… but I want Ziggler to win. He’s been this talented, barely-there underdog since I began watching WWE, and he solidified me as a fan after a heartbreaking promo a few weeks back about how much he’s been looked over and how he deserves this. As long as he’s not fighting nineteen boring matches with Baron Corbin, I’d definitely be down with seeing Ziggler hold the title.  That said, there’s no way in hell its going to him. Ambrose is keeping this one, at least for now.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – Ziggler will continue to feud against other wreslers. I’d be super on board with a good couple Crews vs Ziggers matches (just keep him away from Corbin for the rest of the decade). Dean will be the champ until A.J. Styles eventually takes the belt off of him.

Molly May – I hope these two continue to feud for the belt for at least one or two more pay per view matches. They’re fantastic foil for one another, both being guys that never got the respect they deserved but being pretty stylistically different. I think Ambrose deserves a legitimate reign, and definitely a longer one that Roman’s. Really make Roman seeth over how Seth and Dean are/were better champions than he was. (Just cause you’re on separate brands doesn’t  mean you still can’t hate your friends!) So when it reaches Survivor Series, or preferably the Royal Rumble where I want Dean to lose the belt, Roman unleashes his anger on Dean after a poorly planned alliance between them goes every kind of wrong.

I’d like to see Bray Wyatt get involved in the title picture after he’s done with Orton. I’d kill for a triple threat on PPV between Champbrose, Ziggler, and Wyatt, then I’m thinking Ziggler and Wyatt would make a solid feud with them both blaming each other for their losses and the feud ending in a traditional Survivor Series match. Either leading two teams or as the last two remaining members of opposing teams.

Josh Jackson –Based on the build up, there’s no way Ziggler doesn’t turn heel after this. Based on the way things have been going however, Ziggler will stay face for a little while longer while he feuds with AJ Styles for the number one contender spot. Dean will feud with Bray Wyatt for the title, where he’ll come out on top once again. I can’t say the same for when he squares off with The Phenomenal One.

Finn-Balor-Seth-Rollins-SummerSlam-850x540

MATCH #11 FINN BALOR VS. SETH ROLLINS

What you need to know about the Match:

Seth Rollins – Was the World Champion until an injury forced him to drop the belt, he’s yet to officially been pinned to lose his belt. He’s a huge asshole and it’s glorious to watch.

Finn Balor – Think of the hottest soccer player you’ve ever seen, now imagine them in a wrestling ring and occasionally covered in body paint that makes them kinda look like Venom. He’s awesome and will be the most popular person in wrestling one day.

PREDICTION:

Matt Kelly – So this is the hardest match to call. I originally predicted every run in known about man. I’ve argued that Finn has more to lose if he wins than if he loses. Yea those of us who watch NXT know he’s earned it but to the 80% of the casual audience is concerned he’s just Reigns 2.0. A quick and immediately push could do more bad than good. So I’m saying the Seth wins but it will in no way be a clean win. Maybe Seth Rollins best friend Jon Stewart comes and saves him once again.

Molly May –  Finn Bálor. Mostly because do you honestly think Demon KING Bálor is gonna lose his first main roster pay per view match. Yeah, I know the demon lost at NXT Takeover: The End, but now he’s the demon KING. Just trust them, it’s different (it’sreallynot).

BUT! Seth is getting the belt.

Triple H is gonna interfere. The Club is gonna interfere. John Stewart is gonna interfere. Your mom is gonna interfere. Hideo Itami is gonna debut after the match to beat up Bálor for injuring him which HASNOTBEENBROUGHTUPYETONNXT WHYNOT WHOHURTYOUHIDEO. But in all seriousness, this match is not ending in a clean finish. I expect interferences, especially from the GMs, Triple H or John Stewart. It’ll look like Finn won but someone will catch that he had a foot under the rope and they’ll give it to Seth, even though Seth blatantly nailed Finn with a chair. But I’d still like to keep The Club at an arms’ length from Finn, and I’m aware Hideo is a stretch. In a perfect world, Finn would be the one that put Hideo on the shelf and Hideo would get his revenge one way or another. But since the draft has kinda screwed that up, check my Takeover: Brooklyn prediction for how I reworked it *winkwink*.

Josh Jackson – I predict that the announce team will say “The Demon King” 30 times throught the match. I also fully expect Finn to win, becoming champion a short four weeks after debuting on the main roster. Sure, that’s a bit of a hot shot to the top spot, but Seth is already established as a main eventer. Cutting Finn’s legs out from under him this soon, especially if they have him lose his first match in his demon garb, would be absolutely detrimental to his continued growth. He won’t hold it long, but I’m expecting Brooklyn to explode once the longest reigning NXT champ wins the big one.

Derek Kraneveldt – As a non-regular NXT viewer, aside from catching a few (fantastic) Takeover events, I’m not overly familiar with Bálor. That said, in any case I think that this one is going to Rollins. Rollins is one of WWE’s biggest stars, and now that he can no longer play up the exciting “title I never lost” angle, I could definitely see him gloating about the title that nobody else has ever won. He just seems a bit under-utilized since his return (especially looking at the way he went out), and I think that this outcome would certainly get people talking.

THE FUTURE:

Matt Kelly – Seth was an amazing Heel Champion before and he will be an amazing heel champion again. So what happens with Balor? Balor continues to impress the world match after match until he earns his spot in the Royal Rumble… and wins it.

With two “Main belts” this creates a question… what is the main event belt. I say the Rumble winner chooses the belt he wants, and Finn wants to do the one thing Seth Rollins couldn’t do… bring the World Title back to Raw. He challenges the then current champion AJ Styles. A.J. will feel confident that he can win at Wrestlemania and is excited to be defending his belt in a setting where his friends (and current Tag Team Champs) The Club can be by his side.

After putting on what will arguably be one of the top matches in 2017, the Club comes down and beats the ever loving SHIT out of AJ Styles. The Demon rides out on Anderson’s shoulders wearing the belt for a feud against Seth Rollins to combine the belts into the WWE Galaxy belt or some stupid shit like that.

Molly May – Seth is a great heel champion, and I really want to see how a reign of his will go without the Authority’s help. And I want Finn to be on Seth like a fly on shit. Let the audience get to know Finn better since this massive push out the gate has brought on some Reigns-esque distaste. And teach them that when Finn loses a match for a title, he does not let who beat him get away unscathed. In my opinion, Bálor is a more interesting character when he’s in a chase for the belt than when he’s the champ. What would make this extra awesome (since WWE already pulled the trigger early on the demon): start incorporating supernatural traits into his normal human character. We don’t know a ton about how the demon mythos works, just that it’s “Bálor’s mask”. The intimidation factor could help make up for his size disadvantage. Do things like have him cut the arena lights and La Catrina-teleport to the ring. Have him show up to RAW in a surgical mask that he rips off to reveal a Joker-looking slit-mouth. Hell, go full Japanese urban legend and put him in arena bathrooms before shows to scare fans. I just wrote your next season of Swerved. You’re welcome.

Josh Jackson – Rollins won’t be out of the picture for long, considering that he’ll end up getting a rematch and taking the title off of Finn thanks to some outside help. Maybe the return of J & J Security? Or a bitter Kevin Owens who feels that Finn doesn’t deserve the opportunities that are meant for him? Either way, Finn’s impressive debut will be tempered a bit, cooling him off as he clears the way for the inevitable Roman Reigns redemption story.

Summerslam 2016 pre-show begins at 5pm on the network and Summerslam begins at 7pm. Let us know what you think of our predictions and comment with some of your own.

The big news coming out of Gamescom this morning seems to be the reveal of Metal Gear Survive, the first Kojima-less Metal Gear title after the very public split between the famed creator and his overseers at Konami. A quick look at the trailer leaves no question as to why the reaction so far seems to range between “lol Konami”, and “something something franchise killer”. We all know that Kojima was known for introducing some ridiculous scenarios into his games, but I would imagine that even he would laugh at the concept of taking the survivors of the attack on Mother Base and inexplicably sucking them into an inter-dimensional portal, placing them in a post apocalyptic wasteland where they’re forced to fight hordes of zombies. Yes, that’s the premise.

Currently sitting at nearly 30,000 dislikes on IGN’s YouTube page in less than 12 hours, it’s safe to say that after thoroughly killing any goodwill the company had with their fans courtesy of crowd pleasing moves like cancelling Silent Hills, removing the PT demo from the PlayStation Store, preventing Kojima from accepting an award he earned for his work, and turning some of their beloved franchises into pachinko machines rather than produce new games, this latest reveal isn’t going to win back anybody. Almost approaching parody levels of absurdity, it’s hard to imagine how anyone would have green lit a game in a franchise as big as this and take it in such a wildly different direction. But when we stop and think about how not only Konami, but the entertainment industry as a whole handles the concept of audience demand, should we really be surprised?

Norman Reedus PT

Oh, what could have been…

Watching this trailer for the first time, it felt like a checklist of what an out of touch executive would do when conceptualizing a game. Let’s see, zombies are still popular, right? Mad Max and Fallout are big! Why not place it in a barren, desolate space? Let’s have a group of no-nonsense soldiers take them down like it’s no big deal while we’re at it. But most importantly, new IP’s are way too risky. I know! Let’s slap Metal Gear Solid on the title and watch it fly off the shelves! We can even reuse assets to save some money while recouping cash on the money sink that was MGS V!

I mean, what could go wrong?

The worst part is that the people in charge will never look in the mirror and realize that they’re the reason for these failures, and we see it time and time again across the entertainment spectrum. Nintendo is going through a similar issue with Metroid Prime: Federation Force, a game that plays just fine on its own. But thanks to their own tone def assertion that making it a Metroid game would build enthusiasm is likely going to ensure that the promising multiplayer title will be dead on arrival. Why? Because the company decided to take a franchise that hasn’t seen a new game since the widely panned Other M in 2010, one that they’ve teased sequels to for years thanks to the rumored Metroid Dread, only to never deliver. What we’re left with is a light hearted spin-off that has next to nothing in common with its main games. While drastically different side games aren’t a bad thing on their own, how can you dangle a carrot in front of your fan base for so long, then be surprised at the backlash when you bait-and-switch them?

As many gamers will tell you, Nintendo has a history of making head scratching decisions such as this, ranging from self fulfilling prophecies like forcing fans to scratch and claw for “risky” games like Fatal Frame, only to run next to no advertisement for them, to the Villager amiibo being among a set of high demand figures that they didn’t deem popular enough to take away shelf space from Mario and Link, creating a huge scalper market for the figurines. This is despite the fact that Animal Crossing: New Leaf is currently sitting at number six on the list of best selling 3DS games of all time, (and might have been higher if they didn’t include each version of Pokemon as one total). You know what sold nearly six million fewer copies? Zelda. I’m no CEO, but this is *THEIR* data! To Nintendo’s credit, they finally restocked it exclusively at Toys R Us in the States about a year later, with a whole line of Animal Crossing figures and cards showing that they finally acknowledged what was right in front of them. The only way they could realistically claim that they didn’t anticipate demand is if they don’t read their own financial reports like the rest of us.

Villager Amiibo

You got any of them Villagers?

This lack of foresight and these reactionary decisions aren’t isolated to the gaming industry either. I’m sure we don’t need to be reminded of how the Suicide Squad film was allegedly re-shot to include more humor after the success of Deadpool. An ironic prospect when you remember that Fox’s project had its own set of challenges when its creators had to fight for the film to be true to the source material with an R rated action flick, reportedly due to studios refusing to believe that a violent, vulgar superhero could sell tickets. Even Marvel, as great as they have been in recent years, isn’t immune to this disconnect. When Sony’s email leak revealed that CEO Ike Perlmutter was seemingly supplying “proof” that female led superhero movies are traditionally failures, he cites Catwoman and Electra, apparently placing the blame on them featuring female leads while ignoring that these were both critically panned. On the flip side, based on the advertisements, the Ghostbusters reboot sold itself almost entirely on the fact that it was led by an all female team, as opposed to the merits of the film itself. Turns out, that wasn’t enough.

Daredevil Movie Poster

I’m sure this had more to do with Electra‘s failure than Jennifer Garner’s vagina.

The examples are seemingly endless, from Capcom’s storied history to Lego Dimensions and the recent reveal that Supergirl will be exclusive to reissues of last year’s starter pack, leaving early adopters in the dust. But will these companies learn their lesson? Probably not. It’s much easier to fail when your job security doesn’t rely on making good decisions, especially when you can pass the blame down to your subordinates. In Konami’s case, I’m sure they see Metal Gear Survive as their saving grace. The game that will prove that they don’t need Kojima to carry on with their biggest franchise. It has everything that’s popular mashed together, and the tens of thousands of dislikes will be attributed to being from “haters” and “trolls” who will buy the game anyway. And naturally, when none of this happens and Survive ends up flopping, the obvious takeaway will be that fans have lost interest in the Metal Gear franchise. Not that their decision makers have no idea what their doing and are out of touch.

Oh well, there’s always pachinko!

To celebrate the start of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Blizzard announced that some special gear is now being made available in Overwatch for a limited time, alongside a new mode featuring the game’s resident Brazilian, Lucio.

Featuring costumes, sprays, voice lines, highlight intros, emotes, and victory poses exclusive to this event, over 100 new items will be available for players to unlock during the promotion period. Running from August 2-22, that gives us three weeks to grind up those levels and stockpile our loot boxes so we can hope to nab some of this new stuff. Or… You could always buy boxes, which I’m guessing Blizzard and Activision are counting on.

Easing the grind slightly is Sportsball Lucioball, a new mode where two teams of three Lucio’s skate across a field in what’s essentially a game of soccer. Tweaking his abilities slightly to match the new game mode, his main attack has been replaced with his melee attack, his standard fire is now a secondary fire option that can only shoot once every few seconds, and his volume increase only has an effect on the user as opposed to those around him. Lucio’s Ultimate would also have no use since shields aren’t needed in a peaceful game, so activating it now pulls the ball towards him. Now, if only we could find a way to keep someone as a goalie instead of having the whole team rush the opponent’s net, only for the ball to casually roll into our undefended goal, that would be swell…

Overwatch SUmmer Games Screen 1

Special Summer Games loot boxes will guarantee at least one special item per box, but cannot be bought with coins. So if you’ve saved some up and were hoping to save yourself the trouble of relying on RNG, you’re out of luck. Unfortunately, duplicate Olympic items can still be obtained, which will be traded in for coins that can’t be used to buy them. All in all, I love the new stuff, but the way it’s being approached isn’t the best as far as I’m concerned. Considering how the promotion only running for three weeks, and how high level players can take a long time to level up, the most dedicated players won’t be able to obtain the items they want without either casting aside all responsibilities to play nonstop, or spend potentially hundreds of dollars, neither of which promises anything. I know they need to monetize the game somehow, but allowing normal items in the special drops, duplicates, AND not allowing us to use coins to buy them seems ridiculous.

Complaints aside, the new mode and loot have been a lot of fun to play with and collect so far. Let’s hope Blizzard will take these concerns into consideration going forward. What are your thoughts on the first Overwatch special event? Comment below and let us know!

After over 2 decades, the long awaited (or dreaded) new Ghostbusters film is finally in theaters. And based on the opening weekend numbers, there’s a pretty good chance that you’ve seen it. And if you’ve seen it you probably have a definite opinion on it. Opinions we’ve witnessed so far have ranged from extremely good to impossibly bad.

My opinion is somewhere right in the middle. I didn’t have fun watching this movie and in general the movie fell flat. But what hurt the most was how much potential the new Ghostbusters had. I’m aware that I am someone who has never made an actual movie. And I’m about to Monday Morning Quarterback it. But I believe a lot of issues I had with the film could easily have been fixed with small changes.

First, let me break down what some of the issues for me were. This will get into Spoiler Land and it’s probably best not to read beyond this point if you haven’t seen the movie.

Okay. You have been warned.

ghostbusters2016

Now not all of these issues are easy fixes. At one point, our heroes witness the main villain running off to destroy New York City during the mid-afternoon and but are not see again until some time at night when they finally jump into the Ecto-1 and tear onto the streets to catch him. Um. Hours and entire scenes have passed. How do you create a sense of urgency if the characters themselves don’t show any sense of urgency? When the police suspect that our heroes have just killed a man by throwing him from a window the scene ends with a series of Patrick Swayze references? There’s absolutely no resolution to this potential hurdle and it’s swept under the rug like so many potentially rich story beats in exchange for some witty dialogue. The movie ignores plot in lieu of potential laughs several times and the story and characters are worse off for it. I can list every offense but for the sake of this article I’m going to focus on the three major issues that most of the smaller issues stem from.

Issue #1: This movie does not exist in the same universe as the original two films yet is still very self conscious about it existing. This doesn’t bother everybody, but it definitely bothered me. By making this its own stand alone film, this go around has to retell the Ghostbusters origin story from scratch and spend a lot of energy doing it. It repeats beat by beat scenes from the original movie with very subtle “unique” twists. This isn’t a structural issue (because it worked great in the first film) but then the movie additionally is packed with cameos of the entire original cast as “jokes”. Only one or two of these cameos actually works but most of the time the extent of the joke is “look, it’s one of the people from the original movie… laugh now please.”

Issue #2: The relationships established between the 4 Ghostbusters are extremely rushed and don’t really change that much from there. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) are former best friends. They stopped being best friends for… reasons? Erin re-enters Abby’s life to ask her to stop the publication of a book that they wrote years ago and discovers that she’s basically been replaced by Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), an eccentric but brilliant inventor who only services the story to mumble weird asides and introduce interchangeably forgettable gadgets that will only be used once. After less than 10 minutes Abby and Erin are friends/business partners because they saw a ghost and their estranged relationship is almost never mentioned again. That is until the end of the film when Erin has to make the choice to potentially sacrifice herself for her friend…. except at that point it’s not much of a choice as they’ve been friends for 99.9% of the film. This isn’t a big character moment or choice as much as it’s a quick wrap up to a problem the Ghostbusters let happen in the first place when they sat for hours instead of chasing the bad guy down the street (not to mention letting him grow to the size of a skyscraper before actually zapping him). The final piece of the group comes in Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) who exclaims after joining the group and looking for a ghost down a hallway that she “thought she was joining a book group”. And this is after she witnessed a ghost at her subway job… twice.

Issue #3: For a movie that’s trying so hard to be different they literally have just created four female characters that are attempts at being direct duplicates of the original cast. This ends up being more of a disservice than anything and causes some weird character issues. If these are new characters, treat them as such.

ghostbusters-pic-4

For reference, here’s who represents who:

Abby is Ray
Erin is Peter
Holtzmann is Egon
Patty is Winston

The original film was a tale for one sarcastic guy and his 3 co-workers, all playing the straight man to an outlandish situation. Sure Ray, Egon and Winston have some hilarious lines… but every line is delivered with complete sincerity. They don’t have time for jokes, they’re here to catch ghosts and are firmly grounded in doing so. The audience has a place of perspective from which to watch the fantastic story play out.

This new movie has no straight man. The closest we have is Erin but even she is too goofy for her own good and is made less respectable in situations in which she mistakes windows for sliding doors. Holtzmann is too silly to be the “Egon”, which would be fine if they made her more of a 3-dimensional character than just a weird Egon. McKinnon’s performance is getting a lot of praise and it’s super deserved because it was a huge risk but it could have been so much more relatable if it had any depth or history to it. She’s the same unpredictable question mark at the end of the story as she is when Erin first meets her.

gb_headshot_thumbs_gb2016_03-1

The most offensive issue comes in Patty as Winston. In the original film Winston was a man who didn’t believe in ghosts. He just needed a job. Some of the best moments in the original film was Winston being the normal guy coming to terms with lots of new information. In the remake, Patty discovers a ghost and calls the Ghostbusters for help. That’s perfectly fine. Then She asks to join the group. This is also fine. Then on their first mission with the team she’s mumbling to herself about “I thought this was gonna be a book club and now I’m fighting ghosts”. What?!? There is no other reason for this line to exist for this character beyond “She’s the Winston”. Even when the character is actually the most different from its male counterpart, they still write dialogue for her that’s more fitting for Winston. This is even more absurd based on the fact that just before this mission she got them a vehicle for the equipment and uniforms… TO CATCH GHOSTS! Why in the hell is this character unaware of what she signed up for after having dealt with one TWICE in the subway?

That in a nut-shell are my 3 major issues. And they’re big ones. The new Ghostbusters is a film that wants to make its own name for itself but can’t get out from under the shadow of the original.

So why not just accept that the original films existed in this universe and start from there? Why must every reboot be a remake?

Here’s my take on the first 20 minutes of the film that would quickly fix some of these issues. And remember, I’ve never made a movie, I’m just writing how marrying these two stories together could work and how it would fix a lot of issues.

Imagine if the new Ghostbusters film opened with the original commercial from the first Ghostbusters movie. The year is 1990 and we pull back to reveal a trio of girls having a sleepover. These girls are 10 year old Erin, Abby and their eccentric friend Jillian Spenlger. Yes, I’m turning Holtzmann into a relative of Egon because if you’re going to make her character a female equivalent him anyways let’s just make her a relative and have a reason why they share the same tendencies. The three of them are sharing ghost stories and maybe even make a reference to how cool it is that Jillian’s uncle is a Ghostbuster.

Suddenly weird things begin to happen in the house and they experience a real life ghost. The three are bonded by this scary moment and the credits roll.

We then jump to modern day New York.

The three remaining Ghostbusters are looking around their offices reminiscing about Egon (who has passed away) and discussing how the business has become a money pit. There hasn’t been a ghost in New York for over 20 years and their equipment is extremely dangerous after years of being inactive. On top of that, with no ghosts to bust they can barely afford the rent on the building.

It’s at this time that Jillian enters the firehouse. She has inherited Egon’s quarter of the business and actually wants to join the team.

gb2

Peter, Ray and Winston decide that Jillian could be the ultimate solution to the financial albatross that is The Ghostbusters and they do her one better. They’ll give her their shares as well and make her the sole owner. This is admittedly a crude trick but we can make sure that all three get something bad in return. There’s a joke in the current film where Patti, Abby and Holtzmann are attacked by a giant Stay Puft Marshmellow Man balloon that keeps them pinned down. Instead of that happening to the female Ghostbusters we could make it that Peter, Ray and Winston decide to ultimately help the girls out only to get trapped under the balloon and be rendered old and useless. The four female Ghostbusters simply pop the balloon and save them, clearly stating that they are the newer, better models (take that, internet trolls).

Jillian excitedly calls her friends Abby and Erin to join her so they can continue their ghost hunting excitement. But they have since all but forgotten their experience 25 years ago. Much like in Ghostbusters 2, the two try to convince Jillian that her uncle was a scam artist who tricked New York into believing in ghosts for profit. But the mystery of a ghost reappearance reinvigorates them when Jillian is asked to investigate the historical site from the beginning of the film.

From this point on we can start to introduce our villain, who should have ties to the history of the Ghostbusters, and pick up right where we meet Patty in the current film. Most of the movie can play out the same way from this point except the villain actually has weight beyond being a random angry kid from Reddit.

By making these changes you immediately tie the film to the original films that the current version is already self conscious of, except now the cameos serve a purpose beyond being gags. It also removes the 20 minutes of retelling how the Ghostbusters were formed and avoids some of the weird missing elements of Erin and Abby’s friendship.

Since the equipment is still old and beat up, it still allows us to keep some of the more entertaining segments of the girls “testing out Jillian’s equipment” but also allows us to bypass some of the more obnoxious elements of the film where everyone but the younger section of the audience (and since this is the first PG-13 Ghostbusters film don’t tell me that’s who it’s specifically aimed at) has heard this dialogue and seen this before.

At the end of the day, what’s done is done. The movie is out there and it’s a hit. There will definitely be a sequel and honestly that’s a good thing. The main cast has fantastic chemistry and I’d be more than thrilled to see what a sequel would be like now that the tedious work of reestablishing the Ghostbusters has been done. I just hope that they now take things in a new fresh direction rather than continuing to pay fan service to films that their audience already has on their shelves at home.

If you’re a big fan of games like the Hyperdimension Neptunia franchise or Fairy Fencer F, then you might want to seek out Idea Factory’s booth at Anime Expo this year, since the publisher is bringing more con exclusive merchandise than you can shake an eggplant at.

First off, NEXT Form T-shirts will let you rep your favorite goddess while showing off their new form from the recently released VII. Ranging from Small-XXL, there’s no reason why you won’t be able to display your love with pride.

Next, (get it?), are the Nepu Nepu plushies! This set of four tsum tsums stuffed Nep burritos are incredibly adorable, and almost make up for the fact that we didn’t get those Plutia style plushies from a few years ago.

If you missed out on any of those hard to get collector’s editions, the booth will also have some copies for their past games, including Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2, Re’Birth 3, Action Unleashed, Blanc + Neptune Vs. Zombies and VII among others. Like last year, the booth will also be giving away jumbo convention badges featuring games like the soon to be released Fairy Fencer F: Advent Dark Force. And if you have A LOT of space in your room, the booth is holding auctions for some of their jumbo promotional banners. But most importantly, the company added Top Nep baseball caps as a last second addition! Be the meme as you show the world who runs Gamindustri.

Neptune Top Nep Hats

So stop by, demo games like MeiQ: Labyrinth of Death, take some pictures with the Neptune and Tiara standees and pick up some cool stuff while you’re at it. Who else is stopping by? And if you see the dork covered in Neptune gear, it’s probably me, so come say hi!

Late last year, Adult Swim announced that they’d be helping bring back Samurai Jack so that it can finally have the last season it always deserved. The series is scheduled to air later this year on the network’s anime block Toonami, but besides that, not much is known about this continuation. Today, during the Annecy 2016 festival, people were shown a quick first look at the new season. Even though it’s only one picture, the project seems to be shaping up pretty nicely as the photo includes a somewhat dark vibe with a somewhat older looking Jack wearing some war paint that appears to be blood.

Jack 2016

The show is still scheduled for this year, but still no word on a specific release. If you’re also interested in some recent news, the Jack team did a quick Q&A earlier in the year about the show’s return on Reddit which you can find HERE.

If you’ve been waiting anxiously for more news on Kingdom Hearts 3, you’re going to have to hold out a little longer. But don’t worry, Square Enix has your Keyblade fix covered with a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue. Yes, that’s the real name. And it’s looking pretty great!

Serving as both an HD remaster of Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and what essentially seems like a prequel demo for the third game focusing on Aqua’s continued journey through the Realm of Darkness, the latter segment in particular looks absolutely gorgeous. Considering how I found Aqua to be the most interesting protagonist across the entire series, I’m really excited to be able to control her unique spells once again. Her story bridging the gap between Birth By Sleep and the third game doesn’t hurt the excitement either! On the Dream Drop Distance front, it was the only core KH game I never finished. Replacing your Disney party members with generic color swapped enemies took some of the joy out of the crossover appeal the series has become known for, but I’m hoping that I’ll be able to enjoy it more the second time around.

Aside from the playable segments, Kingdom Hearts x Back Cover, a movie that connects to the earliest parts of the universe’s lore, will tell the story of the Foretellers. Tying in to the recently released Kingdom Hearts Unchained x mobile game, this package will be overflowing with details to play through and analyze as we wait for 2017. With each character masked, it won’t be long until we start trying to identify the voice actors and see what past characters they match!

Sadly, we’ll have to wait longer on news for the third game, seeing as the trailer mentioned more details wouldn’t come until the winter. In the meantime, see if you can figure out any of the voice actors for yourself in the trailer below. When December comes, will you be picking up the final Kingdom Hearts release before KH3 finally arrives? Does the third game’s apparent E3 absence disappoint you? And did you actually like the Dream Eaters? Let us know in the comments!

After revealing Horizon Zero Dawn at E3 last year, it quickly became the first game Sony has shown off that made me excited to be a PlayStation 4 owner. Now that its latest trailer has been released, it impressed me to the point where I almost didn’t care that it’s being delayed!

Moved to a February 28 2017 release, it’s clear to see that Guerrilla Games has put their development time to good use so far. Showing off some stunning new combat clips, Aloy, the game’s star, destroys mechanical dinosaurs with ease thanks to her bow and arrow, displaying its seamless looking combat that comes to life thanks to its jaw dropping graphics and effects. On this journey to find herself and the secrets of her past, Aloy’s adventure is looking more and more like it will be one worth taking.

While a delay is always disappointing, it’s clear that the developer behind the Killzone series is dead set on getting their first attempt at an action role playing game right. But what say you readers? What do you think of Horizon so far and are you affected by the delay? Watch the trailer for yourself and make yourself heard in the comments!

A new Pokemon Sun and Moon trailer is available and it packs a punch! More details have been revealed on the two new legendary Pokemon, more footage of the Alola region, character options and reveals, and even a shocking twist on the Pokedex!

The name of Pokemon Sun’s legendary Pokemon is Solgaleo, with its signature attack being Sunsteel Strike and its ability being Full Metal Body. The name of Pokemon Moon’s legendary is Lunala with its signature attack being Moongeist Beam and its ability being Shadow Shield. Both Sunsteel Strike and Moongeist Beam are attacks that disregard the opponent’s abilities. However, Full Metal Body and Shadow Shield are different–with Full Metal Body, “a Pokemon’s stats will not be lowered by the effects of an opponent’s moves or Ability.” With Shadow Shield, “a Pokemon will take less damage from an attack that lands when the Pokemon has full HP.” These abilities sound all too familiar right? They sound like the exact representations of the Abilities “Clear Body” and “Multiscale” which are described the same way… ALMOST. The choice of name for these Abilities–“Full” and “Shield” as well as the verbiage “a Pokemon” instead of “THIS Pokemon” leads me to believe that these abilities may protect teammates as well. With recent major changes to Video Game Championships rules in 2016, such as the ability to use two legendary Pokemon in your team from a limited list, with double battles being VGC standard, this may fall well in line with that direction and I’m excited to see where it could take the metagame!  Their typings have also been revealed–Psychic/Steel for Solgaleo and Psychic/Ghost for Lunala… the secondary types remind me of the Sinnoh Legendary Pokémon, which happen to be Dragon/Steel (Dialga), Dragon/Ghost (Giratina), and the third–Dragon/Water (Palkia)… perhaps the third Legendary pokemon for sun/moon will be Psychic/Water? More information on Solgaleo and Lunala can be found on Pokemon’s website.

solgaleolunala

There’s some new footage on the Alola region as well. Although I’m sure the internet will find eggs in this footage, but what I’ve seen so far is a comparison to real-world scales. In other words, the scale between the character and buildings have been somewhat unrealistic in previous Pokemon games. However in this footage, a Mountain is so much bigger than the character, that it really makes the world appear infinitely more enormous and realistic. We are reminded of the many options available for character customization, such as the many different shades of skin, and some more details on Professor Kukui, his assistant Lillie, and your friend/rival Hau. I find the professor most interesting because he specializes in Pokemon Moves, which is something I have not seen in the past.

kukui

The last interesting tidbit is with the Pokedex! While in previous games these devices served little more function than electric encyclopedias, this new one is inhabited by the Rotom Pokemon, and with it comes benefits! They have just detailed on the Pokemon website that there will be a QR scanner built in. This can be used to capture information on Alola Pokemon habitats into your Pokedex, among your friends. We imagine this can be used to interesting effect for Augmented Reality promotional efforts for the Pokemon Company (Pokemon GO integration, anyone?).

Free Comic Book Day is here, and what better way to celebrate than with, well… free comics?

Every year, publishers from across the spectrum provide samples and issues of some of their most popular properties as a way to celebrate the medium, (while hoping to hook a few new readers in the process). Viz is no different, as one of the lead manga publishers in the U.S. This year, the company behind the localization of hits such as Death NoteInuYasha and Dragon Ball Z, have not one, but two samples; one featuring Pokemon, and the other focusing on One Punch Man.

The Pokemon Pocket Comics issue serves as an introduction to the newest edition of the Pokemon manga library, that skews a little more to the kids, (or the kid in us). Containing three four-panel gag comic strips alongside a variety of quizzes and Pokemon statistics, the sample hopes to test your Pokemon prowess in between laughs.

Pokemon Free Comic Book Day 2016

The Shonen Jump Free Comic Book Day 2016 Sampler on the other hand, is all about action. Each copy contains excerpts from two of Jump’s currently running series, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia. The former stars Saitama, an unassuming man who is part of a growing super hero community. He comes off as lazy, unmotivated and kind of dense, which stems from boredom since he has become so powerful, he has yet to find an opponent that he can’t defeat in one punch. Further along the super hero spectrum, My Hero Academia is set in a world where 80% of the population has a “Quirk”, or superpowers that has led to constant battles between heroes and villains. When you’re unsure of how to use your power however, this academy is where you go to learn how to use them. Yet, what happens when you’re one of the 20% that don’t have powers?

Both samples will be available while supplies last at one of the thousands of participating locations.

As the first of at least two films scheduled to release based on Playstation’s biggest first party titles, Ratchet & Clank has the potential to change the way we look at video game movies. These big screen adaptations have left gamers burned enough times that the audience is more than a little wary every time Hollywood decides to take one of their beloved universes, and turn it into something that often shares little in common with the source material. But rising from the ashes of such classic game to film moments such as that ridiculous first person scene in Doom, whatever the hell the Super Mario Bros. film was supposed to be, and anything associated with the name Uwe Boll, R&C is aiming to be faithful to the universe it took the developers at Insomniac 14 years to develop while leaving its own mark in the process.

Ratchet & Clank Wondercon Panel 1

From left to right: Bella Throne, David Kaye, James Arnold Taylor, Brad Foxhoven and Kevin Munroe

During the Wondercon panel covering the film, director, Kevin Munroe, and producer, Brad Foxhoven, discussed at length about how seriously they took the challenge of getting the spirit of the game right in the within the constraints of a 90 minute movie. When the team found out they would be working on a Sony project, they were big fans of the Playstation brand and would have been willing to work on anything they presented them. Sony initially gave the team Ratchet as a test piece before moving forward with an actual commitment to a film, but they ended up doing so well with it, the company ended up deciding to have the team work on expanding that test into the first Playstation film project.

To make sure the project would be led with the level of care it would need to bring such a beloved franchise like Ratchet & Clank to life, members from the team at Insomniac were brought in to oversee the movie’s development. Naturally, we can’t talk about these games without the plethora of weapons that the series has become known for, which is why Munroe and Foxhaven promise a few surprises in this department. Featuring certain favorites like the Buzz Blades, Combustor and Fusion Grenades in a brief clip, finding out what makes the cut is one of the aspects of the movie that we’re looking forward to most.

Despite being based on the duo’s origins from the original PS2 game, one goal that was aimed for was integrating the first chapter of the series with much of the lore introduced in later games, namely the Future line of games that started on the PS3. Because of this, some of the story elements would be changed to reference characters, organizations and events that originally wouldn’t appear until much later. When it comes to the game based on the movie, (that’s based on a game,) that version is based on the film from franchise favorite, Captain Qwark’s perspective, adding an extra layer to this new launching point.. How big these big screen changes will be remains to be seen, but with so much attention going towards creating an authentic adaptation, it’s looking like the final product will be in safe hands. Even still, the biggest focus will be on establishing the relationship between Ratchet and Clank, which has served as the backbone of the franchise since the beginning.

The most obvious change however, comes with the many new characters debuting in the theatrical version. While James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye and Jim Ward reprise their video game roles as Ratchet, Clank and Qwark respectively, the duo’s first nemesis, Chairman Drek, has been cast as Paul Giamatti. In terms of the film exclusive cast, John Goodman plays Grimroth, Ratchet’s father figure, Rosario Dawson as Elaris, the brains behind the Galactic Rangers, Sylvester Stallone as Victor Von Ion, Drek’s robotic bodyguard and antagonist to Clank, and Bella Throne as Cora, a no nonsense member of the Rangers who works alongside Ratchet. For those who might be worried that the Hollywood stars might not be as passionate about the franchise as the longtime fans are, Thorne was part of the panel and proclaimed many times how excited she was to get the role since her brother is a big gamer, while feeling the pressure to help make Cora’s addition a natural fit into this world.

With Ratchet & Clank releasing in theaters soon, what does the future hold for the team? While Sly Cooper is next in line for the big screen treatment, Munroe and Foxhoven are hoping to work on a Jak & Daxter adaptation if they got their choice. From what I’ve seen so far of their first attempt, I’m thinking that would be a project worth getting excited for.

From Gramercy Pictures, Ratchet & Clank will arrive in theaters on April 29th.

In 2014, Nintendo had two mystery projects on display for the Wii U. Code named Project Giant Robot and Project Guard, both felt like exciting, new ways to use the Wii U Game Pad, but were too thin of an experience to feel like their own games. In fact, we predicted that these two demos would end up as mini games in a larger collection when we previewed the two projects.  While Giant Robot has yet to resurface, Project Guard was revived as Star Fox Guard, a Slippy Toad focused pack in included with copies of Star Fox Zero. As a bonus game, Nintendo would have been able to leave the  game as is and still would have left little room to complain. After all, how can you complain about a free game? When playing the final build at Wondercon this year however, and it’s immediately clear that the game has gone through a variety of improvements to make it feel more like a complete game in its own right.

Star Fox Guard Screen 1

In what’s essentially a tower defense game, Guard approaches the growing genre in a more unique way. With the TV showing a variety of gun mounted surveillance cameras while the Game Pad shows the map, camera locations and enemy positions, it’s up to Slippy to use each camera to fight off enemies before they reach the core of the map. This isn’t as simple as it sounds, since not only will you have to manage your cameras while trying to look at around nine at a time, but you’ll also need to hold powerful enemies at bay who can inflict status effects such as freezing and static, (most of which have been added since its 2014 reveal). Make too many mistakes, and they can destroy your cameras permanently.

Fortunately, (or maybe less so for the less social readers out there,) Guard has been presented as a multiplayer party game in each of its iterations despite only having one player support. The idea is that spectators in your living room will be able to watch the cameras with you, shouting out which cameras have enemies in sight while the player manages switching and shooting with the Game Pad. Friends will be a lifesaver when it comes to successfully defending your base, especially when the right advice can lead to you spotting waves of enemies you might have overlooked otherwise. Extra support actions like being able to unfreeze one camera by shooting it with another and destroying certain enemies first to avoid being overwhelmed will take more of the player’s attention, making friends even more welcomed.

Star Fox Guard Screen 2

Of course, you CAN play it by yourself, which presents a surprisingly high level of challenge, especially with later stages. This arcade style of game play where you’re competing for completion and high scores has the potential to become highly addicting, becoming further amplified by stubborn gamers like myself who would rather die a thousand in game deaths than ask for help. If nothing else, it will be the first time Slippy has been strong and independent.

While this might not be enough for a standalone retail release, Star Fox Guard looks like it will serve its purpose well as an awesome extra for fans who have waited so long for the team’s next adventure. Stay tuned for our full impressions of both Guard and Star Fox Zero once they are available for review.

I’ve been lucky enough to try out Star Fox Zero a few times over its development, and my excitement only increased as time went on. With the game finally releasing this week as what could be the Wii U’s last big exclusive, (depending on if you want to believe that the next Zelda will be moved to the NX,) you would think that my hype would have reached its apex. It would have, until I played the Wondercon demo.

A lot is being said about the state of the game’s forced motion controls, which ask you to aim with the Wii U Game Pad’s gyro controls while steering with the left stick and pulling off maneuvers with the right. While I can definitely see why people would have trouble with this set up, which sounds like the gaming equivalent to patting your head and rubbing your stomach at the same time, I personally didn’t take long to adjust. What did become a problem however, is when the game switched to All-Range Mode, which is the term coined in Star Fox 64 for when the game switches from on rails dog fighting to being able to freely move in a 3D space. While I didn’t encounter too much of a problem while taking flight, this feature was something that I hoped would improve in previous demos, since Zero uses these sections as a chance to force first person cockpit view onto the Game Pad, while the TV shifts to a cinematic view that displays the entire battlefield, rather than focusing on what the player is doing. Once my time with the completed build ended though, I was beyond disappointed to learn that it got worse.

Star Fox Zero Landmaster 1

Wanting to experience the Landmaster for the first time, I tried out the desert stage, where more than just the control methods changed since the 64 days. Being forced to fly above obstacles while aiming with the game pad and keeping an eye on enemies through the big screen was confusing enough, but became close to second nature by the time the sequence was complete. Once the boss fight started and I had free range of motion however, and I had no idea how much more of a hindrance this would become. But when you take away the speed and mobility of the Arwing and plug in the awkward camera angles into the land stage, what should have been the climax of the stage ended up highlighting everything wrong with forcing your view into first person.

As the boss at the center of the stage bombarded me with smaller enemies and its own attacks while pulling me towards the center, I rarely had any clue as to what was going on. All I knew was my health was sinking, I was getting trounced by attacks, and I had no idea where any of it was coming from. By the time I turned the insanely slow tank around to take aim, I would ram into the boss for more damage because of its quick sand. Avoiding it would have been simple, except the cockpit view made it hard to tell how close I was to the middle. If you’re thinking the TV view will give you some semblance of an idea what was going on, think again! Because every time I looked up at it, the view was panned out with the main monster in the center, capturing every bit of the chaos so well that I had no idea where my tank was. Who thought this was a good idea!? To make it so you can’t see what you’re doing, and have the freedom of changing your view stripped from you for the sake of some stubborn vision of what the game should be?

Star Fox Zero Landmaster 2

Maybe all of this is for nothing. Maybe the final game will be better! But all I know is after crashing and burning, I’m finding myself far less excited about Fox McCloud’s long awaited return. Keep an eye out for our full review in the coming days and see if we have a change of heart.

When news hit that Platinum Games was working on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, was anyone surprised when the nerd stratosphere blew up with excitement? After all, Platinum is one of the premiere action game developers today, which was proven the last time they collaborated with Activision by way of Transformers: Devastation. Knowing what the team could do with our favorite turtles, we jumped at the chance to get our hands on the upcoming brawler at Wondercon. If there was any doubt in your mind that they could repeat the magic with another licensed property, rest assured. The game is great so far!

My biggest worry going into the TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan demo was that it wouldn’t be as unique as it could be. After all, regardless of how fun Transformers was, it was essentially a re-skinned Bayonetta. While there are admittedly few games you would rather have serve as the basis behind your game, there were times when the robots in disguise didn’t feel like themselves because of it. This is not the case with the turtles, with mechanics that felt all their own, while playing up to the strengths of the franchise.
TMNT Mutants In Manhattan Screen 1
Somewhat less reliant on combos compared to Platinum’s other games, Mutants in Manhattan focuses more on teamwork between the four turtles. With the option to switch between Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael on the fly, each one has their own set of attacks to unleash on the Foot Clan. To differentiate them even further, each one has their own set of special attacks that range from damage dealing onslaughts to support abilities like replenishing health with a pizza party. Depending on who’s in the fight, you can even unleash double team attacks to send the enemies packing.
As you would expect from the developer, the enemies aren’t exactly pushovers either. While they go down easily enough, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the multiple enemies coming at you at once, each one color coded to signify different attack patterns reminiscent to the Konami games of our youth. The turtles’ health drains quickly, so a handful of mistakes can mean your team might drop in numbers quickly. Perhaps keeping in mind that this game will likely be targeting kids first and foremost, it’s very easy to being fallen comrades back, especially since they’ll revive on their own if you hold out for long enough. Even if you all get defeated, a button mashing pizza eating mini game will revive everyone to the point where they were beaten. This might disappoint the hardcore crowd who enjoy the punishing difficulty Platinum is known for, but knowing them, there could be options to boost the difficulty in the full version.
TMNT Mutants In Manhattan Screen 2
Most surprising at all however, is what happens between fights. The city stage that I played had the turtles traversing New York in a more open ended way than we would expect from a beat em up such as this. While not completely free roam thanks to clearly defined boundaries, players will move from objective to objective in a non-linear way thanks to the city offering multiple paths. Going off course and searching a little closer can even lead to hidden items, so it’ll be worth it to explore every corner you can.
If I didn’t have enough reason to be excited about TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan, my time with the game made sure to leave me with plenty. Its co-op focused battle system, (whether you’re playing with someone else or not,) is intriguing while the addition of exploration was a welcomed surprise. The toned down difficulty might concern the Platinum Games faithful, but so far, their unique take on the turtles more than makes up for it.
Check back for our full impressions when Mutants in Manhattan releases on May 24th.

GWG March

It’s February 14th, which means love is in the air for some of us. For others, it’s a sad reminder that you still haven’t found someone who’s willing to put up with your uniqueness. However, if you’re in the hunt, Nintendo has released some gaming themed Valentine’s Day cards for that special gamer in your life.

Are your potential love a Mario person? Or maybe they’re more into that mushroom love with Captain Toad? Link may have collected many heart pieces throughout the years, but the only one he’ll want is yours! Those are just to name a few, so check out the rest of the set below, and let us know what your favorites are. They’re cute, funny, and most importantly, free! Even better, let us know if you use one and share the results with us in the comments! Good luck, and happy Valentine’s Day!

I thought Christmas was supposed to be in December! Yet, as we wrap up January and head into February, you would think it was the end of the year considering how many amazing games are hitting the shelves. From high profile sequels to remakes, spinoffs and new IP’s that have demanded our attention, it won’t be hard to find a game or three to play in what’s typically supposed to be the slow winter and spring months. With so many to choose from, where do we start!? In no particular order, here are the 16 games of (the first half) of 2016 that we’re the most excited about.

Honorable Mention: Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow

Date: February 27th

For: Nintendo 3DS

Pokemon Red Blue Yellow 3DS Banner

It’s rare that people get so excited for a Virtual Console re-release, but c’mon, this is Pokemon! While not a full release, (and thus, being excluded from the proper list,) we’re too thrilled not to mention these titles! With Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow hitting our 3DS handhelds via the eShop in about a month, these ports will let us connect via built in wireless to rebuild our classic Pokedex’s with ease, all while poking at our nostalgia. It’ll be good to see what Missingno. has been up to after all these years!

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Date: April 26th

For: Playstation 4

Uncharted4

As one of the many games that was delayed in 2015, it’s easy to see why we’re anxious to go on one more adventure with Nathan Drake in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. With rumors of this being Drake’s last adventure, with some hoping that Naughty Dog focuses more on expanding on The Last Of Us going forward, this very well could be the last time we travel the world with the charismatic adventurer. While it may sound crazy to drop such a popular franchise, it’s not like Naughty Dog hasn’t done it before with series’ like Crash, (which was admittedly out of their hands,) and Jak, and suddenly, it’s not so unheard of. Are you ready to say goodbye?

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4

Date: February 8th

For: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Screen 3

While we’re talking about goodbye’s, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is being touted as the final Storm game. If this is true, it will signal an end of an era for the franchise, which brought incredible visuals, intense boss fights, and a giant roster to the popular series. Oftentimes surpassing its source material when it came to showing off how crazy Naruto and his friends can be when in a fight, it’s appropriate that the fourth game plans on wrapping up the story ahead of even the anime. As the final fights come to a close, we’re hoping we’re left with a game that’s fun enough to carry our fandom for a long time to come.

The Legend Of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD

Date: March 4th

For: Wii U

Zelda Twilight Princess Wii U HD Banner

For those who listen to the Geekscape Games podcast, (thanks, Jeremy!), you’ll know that I’m generally against HD remakes, especially when they feel largely unnecessary. As with most poor life choices that I’ve made over the last year though, amiibo have changed the way I think. Coming bundled with a sweet Wolf Link amiibo at a standard MSRP of $59.99, the figure unlocks a brand new dungeon, alongside support with other Zelda amiibo to change the game in various ways.

Quantum Break

Date: April 5th

For: Xbox One

Quantum Break Gamescom Banner

As the first game from Remedy since 2010’s excellent Alan Wake, Quantum Break looks to continue the developer’s penchant for innovative action game play to go with its stellar story telling that originated with Max Payne. Starring Shawn Ashmore, the cinematic style from their previous games is still going to be a heavy focus, but unlike many games these days, it doesn’t seem like the game play will be compromised because of it. Promising solid action-adventure elements with puzzle solving areas, we’re looking forward to finally getting Quantum Break in our hands.

Trillion: God Of Destruction

Date: Spring 2016

For: Playstation Vita

Trillion Screen 1

This Vita exclusive from the publishers and developers behind the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, (which we’ll get to soon,) Trillion: God Of Destruction has you amass an underworld army designed to take down a seemingly unbeatable god with a TRILLION HP! As you chip away at it over time, you’ll get stronger by training in secret and building relationships with your potential underworld waifus. Because we all need a little love in between fighting an indestructible monster.

Mario & Luigi: Paper Jam

Out now!

For: Nintendo 3DS

Mario and Luigi Paper Jam Screen 1

The Mario and Luigi and Paper Mario RPGs have been one of Nintendo’s best kept secrets for years now, providing laugh out loud comedy to go with its interactive turn based combat. But what happens when you combine both into one game? Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam looks to find out, bringing Paper Mario into a new world for a brand new team up. With new abilities, jokes abound, (usually at Luigi’s expense,) and rewarding game play, what’s not to love?

Note: Keep an eye out for our upcoming review!

Final Fantasy Explorers

Out now!

For: Nintendo 3DS

Final Fantasy Explorers Screen 1

Described as Final Fantasy meets hunting and crafting games like Monster Hunter and Fantasy Life, Final Fantasy Explorers lets players team up in parties of up to four and fight some of the franchise’s most infamous monsters in their pursuit to complete quests. As they’re completed, characters can make new equipment, experiment with various jobs, and even temporarily take the forms of some of the greatest heroes in Final Fantasy history, including Cloud, Squall, Lightning and Yuna! Already adventuring? Share your friend codes with us in the comments and let’s get exploring!

Digimon Cyber Sleuth

Date: February 2nd

For: Playstation 4, Playstation Vita

Digimon Cyber Sleuth Screen 6

As the first Digimon game to hit the current generation, as well as the first RPG to release in forever, Digimon Cyber Sleuth features hundreds of champions to collect and fuse as you and your team save the real and digital world from a new threat. Developed by Media.Vision, the RPG masterminds behind the Wild Arms series, and it’s safe to assume that the other beloved monster collecting franchise is in good hands.

Star Fox Zero

Date: April 22nd

For: Wii U

Star Fox Zero Screen 1

Speaking of being in good hands, the long awaited Star Fox follow up seems like a match made in heaven, (assuming the Lylat System believes in such a concept.) As a collaboration between Nintendo and Platinum Games, what we’ve played of Star Fox Zero with its free range, on rails and on land game play has had us desperate for more. Which made it all the more heartbreaking when it ended up like Uncharted and got delayed from 2015 to this year. Still, it’s looking like it’ll be more than worth the wait, and it will be great to gear up with the old team again.

Project X Zone 2

Date: February 16th

For: Nintendo 3DS

Project X Zone 2 Screen 15

If Star Fox represents a strong team, then Project X Zone 2  is on a whole different level. Not only will Namco Bandai, Sega and Capcom team up for a second round of action packed turn based strategy, but Nintendo is getting in on the fun as well, with Chrom and Lucina from Fire Emblem and Fiora and Metal Face from Xenoblade Chronicles all appearing in the game. As one of the biggest surprises of 2013 for me, I can’t wait to get my hands on this crossover extravaganza once again.

Fire Emblem Fates

Fire Emblem Fates Banner

After Fire Emblem Awakening blew away all expectations in terms of both sales and popularity, the 3DS release served as a type of arrival for the strategy franchise, allowing it to take its place as one of Nintendo’s premiere IP’s. Capitalizing on this, Fire Emblem Fates will release with two versions with two different story perspectives. Featuring solid strategy game play, light dating sim elements and a custom character to lead the cast with, Nintendo is banking on Fates being just as popular, especially with special bundles, 3DS models, and even a downloadable third story on the way.

Megadimension Neptunia VII

Date: February 2nd

For: Playstation 4

Megadimension Neptunia VII_20151110143937
Despite it seeming like Neptunia refuses to take a break with so many spinoffs, remakes, and sequels for the remakes, Megadimension Neptunia VII is the first sequel to the core franchise since 2012’s Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory. Now that everyone *should* have caught up after being bombarded with so many mostly solid games over the last year and a half, (assuming you have a Vita or Steam,) it’s time to take Gamindustri to the NEXT level! Featuring multiple stories, new characters, updated transformations and some much needed changes to the combat, and it’s looking like Neptune’s current gen debut might be one of the highlights of the year.

Gravity Rush HD Remaster

Date: February 2nd

For: Playstation 4

Gravity Rush HD Banner

For my money, Gravity Rush is still the best game to release on the Vita. It’s breathtaking visuals, innovative game play and exciting exploration using the manipulation of gravity was too good to be ignored. Which is why I’m *really* pulling for Gravity Rush HD Remaster to shine in front of a bigger audience on the PS4. With reworked game play controls to work better on a Dual Shock 4, updated visuals, and all of the DLC included for $29.99, there’s no excuse not to get. Except for the fact that it’s mostly digital only if you’re already out of hard drive space…

If that’s the case, be like me and get the physical version which is exclusive to Amazon, and fall in love with Kat all over again!

Pokken Tournament

Date: March 18th

For: Wii U

Pokken Tournament Banner

Pokken was a long time coming, then all of a sudden, it was right around the corner! This collaboration between the team behind the Tekken series and The Pokemon Company brings together some interesting choices from the Pokemon roster to do battle in a 1-on-1 3D fighting game setting. Most importantly however, is that Pokken is looking to open the floodgates with the series’ first amiibo Card, coming packaged with Shadow Mewtwo. I hope you all have that second mortgage ready to go!

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst

Date: May 24th

For: Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC

Mirror's Edge Catalyst Banner

Another game that felt like it would never see the light of day. After years of hoping until finally being confirmed back in 2013, Mirror’s Edge Catalyst will finally be in our hands in a few short months! Serving as a prequel that explores Faith’s background, we’re counting on the innovative first person platformer to wow us again. If DICE can pull off the same magic that they did the first time around, then we have nothing to worry about!

Street Fighter V

Date: February 16th

For: Playstation 4, PC

Street Fighter V E3 Screen 1

Unlike most of the games on this list, the time it took from announcement to release was relatively short. Not that we’re complaining, because a new iteration of Street Fighter is always something to get excited about! With four new characters to accompany a wide variety of reworked veterans from Super Street Fighter II to Street Fighter Alpha 3, the new V system that’s looking to mix up the rules of battle, and an expanded story mode that looks to bridge the gap between the original cast and Street Fighter III, why wouldn’t we be frothing at the mouth to play this?

As you can see, we’re going to have a busy time throughout the year. What games are you most looking forward to, and are there any that we missed? Let us know in the comments, and check back for the latest news, previews and reviews on the games listed, and everything else in between!

Briefly: The day is finally here!

Yesterday, we saw the Fantastic Four-filled nominations for the 36th annual Razzie Awards, which celebrates the very worst in cinema each and every year.

Which can only mean that this morning the Academy Award nominations were revealed. While the big categories feature many of the same films as we saw last week at the Golden Globes, it’s great to see some of the features that were sorely missed from last week’s ceremony get a few nods here. Both Straight Outta Compton and Star Wars: The Force Awakens received nominations, the latter even included in the (well deserved) Best Visual Effects category.

Of course, we’re all mainly looking to see if Leo can finally, finally bring home an Oscar, aren’t we?

Take a look at the nominations below, and be sure to let us know which films, actors, or actresses you feel were missing from this list (Michael B. Jordan, anyone).

Now, while none of this is confirmed at the moment, there are some rumblings around the water cooler regarding what DC and Warner Bros. have planned for Batman now that Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy is done. Sorry to those of you who had hoped that you would see the continuation of that story but Nolan has been saying for quite some time that he was done.

Moving on. Remember when news broke that we would see Justice League hitting the big screen in 2015? It appears that the plan is to follow up with a new Batman movie afterwards. Not one where we yet again see his origin story but instead one where we see Batman in his second year of crime fighting. Possibly an adaptation of Year Two? The film would definitely be set in the same universe that DC is going to begin setting up with Man Of Steel (which I can personally confirmed that a source has stated they have gone back and added things into the movie) and quite possibly every DC movie that follows. We will keep you updated as we find out more details.
