One of the more surprising omissions from the E3 show floor this year was Animal Crossing on the Switch. Originally announced during a Nintendo Direct at the later part of last year, the only thing more disappointing than a demo being unavailable was that the game was being delayed into next year. During the Nintendo Treehouse game play overview however, it’s clear that the extra time is being put to good use as the newly titled New Horizons is introducing so many firsts to Nintendo’s life simulator.

Taking us out of the town and onto an island, our new villagers are being sold on this uninhabited land by the money grubbing Tom Nook. Like previous games in the series, players will explore their town, collect items and interact with neighboring animals as they work towards saving money to pay off their crippling debt.

Perhaps the biggest addition in New Horizons is how money can be saved and spent. Thanks to a new crafting system inspired by the mobile version, Pocket Camp, players can make their own furniture by collecting materials that would have otherwise disappeared in past games. For example, chopped trees can be used for wood to build materials when it would have just vanished before. As side quests are completed, a new currency called Nook Miles can be used to purchase premium items, giving us additional objectives to compete.

If the phrase “it takes a village” we’re taken literally, it would probably look like New Horizons, since you no longer have to take on this challenge alone. Past games allowed players to share towns at different times or visit through local or online multiplayer, but New Horizons allows up to eight players rummage through the same town at once. With new tools like the pole vault that lets villagers jump over water instead of wasting cumulative hours running to the closest bridge, movement is also looking like its receiving an unexpected, yet welcomed improvement. Aside from other humans, the animal NPC’s can be given invitations to move to your island, who can provide extra tasks to perform.  Players can even choose where new animals will have their homes placed, so gone are the days where your favorite cherry tree is suddenly steamrolled one morning. Overall, it seems like the community aspect in both single and multiplayer formats are looking even better.

As March 20 slowly approaches, it’s looking like we’ll have plenty to discover when Animal Crossing: New Horizons is finally in our hands. The expanded multiplayer and single player mechanics, the focus on crafting over buying and streamlined movement are just some of the reasons why we’re looking forward to our island vacation. Let’s hope that this news is just the first of many more positive updates as we eagerly await 2020.

Read my previous thoughts on Super Mario Odyssey here!

Animal Crossing: New Leaf was actually one of the first video games that Derek introduced me to. My siblings had Nintendo Game Boys and such as kids, but it was never something I really got into (though I’m not quite sure why). A few years back, when Derek suggested that I try playing Animal Crossing on his 3DS. I’m sure that I rolled my eyes at the ridiculousness of the idea, thinking “I am an adult,” “I’m awful at video games,” “It’s not really my thing,” etc., etc. In any case, my rubber arm was twisted and I was set up to play.

The first time that I played Derek sat next to me answering my questions about how to do things and why things mattered and what not. After about an hour he needed to go into the next room to record the Geekscape Games Podcast, and I continued on my own. I continued and continued (and continued). I played all through the podcast recording, and I even needed to interrupt him at one point to ask what this flashing red light on the 3DS meant? Turns out it meant I had played for so long that I had killed the battery. I played for at least 4 hours that night, and for many days thereafter. I can’t remember exactly how long I stayed on that particular game, but suffice to say that I really enjoyed it, and it was definitely a great way for me to start getting into video games. It also freaked me right out as suddenly I was devoting all of these hours to playing a game! How could I possibly be that guy?!

So yesterday when I was informed that there was an Animal Crossing game that I could play on my phone, that shit was downloaded immediately. And again, was played until there was no battery left to play. Obviously, it’s only been out for a minute so I haven’t gotten a chance to put too too many hours into the game, but I have definitely put in a few.

Right off the bat I loved the art style. The opening screen is the Nintendo logo with these two-toned trees and simple campers, and I fell in love immediately! I ain’t even mad when it takes foreeeever to load, cause I get to just sit there looking at this beautiful little screen thinking about how I could turn it into wall art on a hypothetical child’s bedroom wall someday…

The game is definitely true to form with the same classic characters and design of furniture and decorations and such. But there is also an element of modern simple art that seems just a bit hipper than what I remember from the original (3DS version).

One of the things that had me buy into the original game was that I got to modify and design things for myself. There were clothing options and home building options and you could plant trees where you wanted trees to be; you even got to design your character on a basic level, which is my favourite part of pretty much any game. (I once spent over an hour designing my Elder Scrolls Online character, only to be interrupted by a phone call and have it time out and reset… oh angry days.)

Although this game is somewhat different in the goals and basic tasks that you do, you still get to design and dress your character, and deck out your campsite with new furniture on a regular basis! Yay! One element that I really liked was getting to take my camper in and having it painted to my liking. I’m realizing now that I’m pretty sure my camper has the same colour scheme going on as the tiny trees on the loading screen, I’m such a level 7 (#SixSeasonsAndAMovie).

When I played the original for the first time I got a peach near the beginning, and either ate or sold it; for those of you out there who have played Animal Crossing before, you know what a silly mistake that was. You later discover that how you generate income is by planting trees and selling the fruit, and the way you grow a tree is by planting a fruit, thus when you are given fruit in the beginning although it seems sweet to make a buck off of it, the wise thing to do is plant it, because soon you will have 3 more of that fruit to either sell or plant! Needless to say as soon as a I learned how to shake fruit from the trees in Pocket Camp, I started hoarding it immediately. I’ve also been hoarding pretty much everything else until I figure out what my priorities need to be. Though I haven’t seen a way to plant trees thus far, sooo if you’ve got that figured out, let me know! (though I’m thinking maybe it’s not a thing in this mobile version).

I’ve also been enjoying fishing. It reminds me of my near and dear Stardew Valley, except much, much easier. Actually, most things in this game are pretty easy, even easier than I remember the original being, which is great as it means that I can be more focused on my goals than on trying to figure out how to master a specific task. I imagine that could get a little boring, but I’m not super far into the game yet so hopefully some things will become more challenging as you move forward. So far the most challenging part has been waiting to for things to regenerate, while not wanting to waste resources, or spend real money to speed them up.

This game is free to download with in game purchases. It seems like lots of people are into that, which I can definitely appreciate for games like Crossy Road (on which I spent way too much money buying characters… ?!). This feels more like a real game, however, not just a ‘phone game’, and I personally would way rather pay a set amount and just be able to play by earning things in the game. That being said I haven’t yet bought anything. I’m sure I will at some point, likely once I have a better idea of what the point of everything is, but so far I have been resistant to spending any real money on it (though those launch specials are looking pretty pretty pretty appealing).

Ok, so fast-forward a few days, I am still enjoying the game, but definitely have now found a few things bothersome. My biggest gripe is that everything takes so long! Not to say that the game is slowed down, but each task you do is for some reason accompanied by so many different animations and different screens that for a single task you are having to click through 4 or 5 pages. For example, this game requires you to craft a lot of furniture, because for some reason each character will only visit your campsite if you have specific furniture (Rude!). Well, every time you craft a piece of furniture you have to watch an animation of you fake opening a box and click through 4 other screens just so you can get back to the original screen you were on and order the next damned piece of furniture! Literally every single task takes time where you just sit and stare at your phone and wish that you weren’t stuck waiting to get through some pointless animation or dialogue so you can just keep moving forward with the friggin game!

Oh man, I guess I didn’t realize it, but that has been really bugging me. I even noticed today at work on my breaks I actually just ended up not bothering to play the game because I felt like the bored-waiting-to-get-to-the-next-screen to actually-enjoying-this-adventure-and-feeling-accomplished-by-completing-a-goal ratios were waaaay off. I’ve also noticed some bugginess, which I’m sure we all have, but every time I see that server error screen I have flashbacks to Pokémon Go, and I don’t wanna go there again!

Overall this game seems like a good game to pick up when you’ve got a little bit of time and don’t want to get too invested in something. I’ll probably still play it when I am waiting for the bus, or half watching TV in my living room, but it definitely doesn’t have me hooked the same way that New Leaf did, at least not yet.

The last time we saw a Nintendo mobile game grace our presence was this February with the release of Fire Emblem Heroes on android and IOS.  Announced about a year ago alongside Fire Emblem, Nintendo has been dead silent about Animal Crossing Mobile. Well, the increasingly painful wait is about to be over! This morning, Nintendo announced a brand new Animal Crossing direct for Tuesday, October 24th at 8 PM PST.  The direct will run about 15 minutes and showcase gameplay for the upcoming mobile title. Odds are we might even get the game tomorrow as well! What are you hoping to see in  Animal Crossing Mobile? Tell us in the comments below!

The official site for Monster Hunter Stories launched recently and something looks peculiar. The game is the first in the Monster Hunter series to be a turn-based RPG. Stories is playable on the Nintendo 3DS and 2DS family of systems so as you can imagine, there is amiibo support.

In Japan, there were five very special amiibo made for the game (plus one other which we will get to in a moment), each one made in the likeness of one of the characters riding an iconic monster from the series. From the left we have: Cheval with Rathian, boy protagonist with one-eyed Rathalos (there is also a girl protagonist version of this one), Ayuria with Barioth, and Dan with Qurupeco. Why are they so special? You can freaking swap the riders! Using these amiibo in your game unlock a special in-game Monsties, or monster companions.

[Update: For clarification, the Japanese version makes use of the other amiibo as well, in the manner described below.]

Who wouldn’t want to get their paws on these guys? Well, it looks like us gamers in the West won’t even get the option. The only mention of amiibo on the game’s site (found at the bottom of this page) talks about them gifting you “high-grade items.” Not a word about Monsties. What’s worse is that if you click the link that reads “see all compatible amiibo,” it takes you here and lists every amiibo made thus far as compatible. It also reiterates the rewards for tapping in an amiibo.

There has been no mention of the special Monster Hunter Stories amiibo being released as of yet and the game’s release date of September 8 is coming up soon. Things are not looking good for amiibo collectors.

The final amiibo in the set, Navirou, may actually be worth importing, regardless of compatibility with the upcoming game. It will still work with Animal Crossing: Welcome amiibo!, unlocking a felyne resident for your town!

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past (Review Here)

While it may not have been perfect, Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past was one of my most pleasurable gaming experiences in 2016. The Dragon Quest series is one of the most colorful and whimsical in the RPG realm and VII was another lovely entry in the series. It somehow managed to escape the tedium that usually comes along with RPG battles. I actually found myself seeking fights in hopes of gaining mastery of over new jobs and potentially befriending the attacking monsters. And oh goodness, it is so darn pretty! The colors simply popped off the 3DS screen.

I also appreciated Square-Enix’s continuing support with DLC. It definitely took some time to be up able to survive those special dungeons but each one was worthwhile. If January’s release of Dragon Quest VIII is anything like VII, I think it is safe to say gamers will have a lot to look forward to.

Pokémon Sun/Moon

While Sun and Moon came out at the tail end of 2016, the titles were worth the wait. I know many longtime fans were tentative about the removal of the standard “Gym System” and its replacement with island trials but I honestly like this way much better. It added more variety to the experience and refreshed the series a bit. I also loved loved loved the introduction of ride pagers instead of relying on HMs to solve puzzles and traverse different environments. I just can’t get enough of the concept of riding on a Stoutland, sniffing out treasure. It cracks me up every time!

The island flavor of the twin titles was lovely and well-done. The details like malasada shops and people calling each other “cousin” were perfect. The overall world feels more fleshed out in my opinion. Regional variations of several Pokémon clinched it.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf – Welcome amiibo

Okay, this isn’t technically a new title but Animal Crossing: New Leaf’s 2016 update, entitled Welcome amiibo, is so brilliant that it deserves a spot on this list. Not only did it manage to reinvigorate a three year old game but also give a boost to the waning interest in amiibo. I even added some older amiibo to my gift list purely for this game. Plus it also introduced a new series of amiibo cards to fuel the collecting addiction. Very clever, Nintendo. Very clever.

Everything Else:

Yuri!!! On Ice (TV Show)

Never in my life did I think I would get interested in (and later obsessed with) an ice-skating anime. Sports-related anime just aren’t my style. Not even Haikyuu!! or Free! could pique my interest. But there is something about the human relationships and emotions in this show that seem so real and relatable that you can’t peel your eyes off it. The relationship between Yuuri and Victor is incredibly touching and one that you become invested in. The opening and ending themes are also super-beautiful.

I urge any anime viewer, sports fan or not, to give Yuri!!! On Ice a look. I am so glad I did. PS- Watch it subtitled, not dubbed. The dub is kind of, sort of, not that good.

The Re-imagining of the Disney Wonder (moment)

The second of the Walt Disney Company’s fleet of cruise ships got a facelift this year. Featuring a upgraded kids area, re-themed adult hangouts, and the replacement of Parrot Cay, the weakest link in the trio of the ship’s restaurants that are included in rotational dining, with the gorgeous Tiana’s Place (of Princess and the Frog fame). The new eatery focuses on Southern cuisine (can you say beignets?) and features a live Jazz band along with an appearance from the owner herself, Tiana.

While many cruisers prefer the newer, bigger Dream and Fantasy ships, I always had a soft spot for the Wonder. With these improvements, I can see the ship becoming others favorite as well.

Remember Miitomo? For about a month in March, Nintendo’s very first mobile game swept IOS and Android devices by storm. Then it just died, but why?

The biggest reason was mostly due to the fact that the game was very basic and nothing more than a glorified question simulator. Sure it was fun the first couple of times to answer some question, hear your opponents answers, and even make your Mii curse up a storm, but eventually the novelty wore off and the game failed to really incentivize players to keep the app on their devices. Now with a little over 10,000,00 downloads, Nintendo is now adding a “big” update to the game in order to win people back. Is it worth talking about, or should you just hit ignore? Let’s find out.Miitomo_forsite

At the core of Miitomo’s new update, there are 5 new features that are being  stressed. The first is the ability to now send private messages to your friends, and honestly, there is nothing interesting about this at all. It’s very underwhelming, and your better off just actually PM’ing your friend on Facebook Messenger or Discord if you want to talk to them. miitomo-update-1

Feature number 2 adds the feature to finally customize your own room. This feature even gives you the ability to hang custom posters in your room whether it be a Miifoto or any picture from off the internet. While this feature may sound miles better than the previous one, it still ends up being incredibly disappointing. Customization is limited to only wallpaper and flooring, and right now posters are only limited to one as so far there aren’t any means to unlock more. While there are some cool themed walls and floors you can get (Metroid Zero Mission, Super Mario Bros., Zelda Breath of the Wild.), those are the only ones worth while as the other walls and floors just seem very bland and boring. miitomo-update-2Feature 3 introduces a new location called Style Central. Here you can upload your current outfit for all to see online. You can even buy the outfits that other people are wearing if you like them (sometimes). While quite charming at first, immediately becomes a boring novelty. Sure at first it’s fun to see characters dressed up like Steven Universe, and Gravity Falls, but after about a minute of exploring, you’ll quickly grow tired of the endless supply of Undertale and Steven Universe Characters ( I mean I love Steven Universe, but come on guys there’s just too much there).

Oh, and about being able to buy other outfits. I said sometimes, because there will be times when you can’t buy a certain item due to it only being available in Miitomo Drop. So you either have to spend Coins/Money on multiple tries, or worse, wait for that event to go back into the minigame. Another interesting idea, but poorly executed.miitomo-update-3

Feature 4 introduces Answer Central, which is just as boring as it sounds. All you do here is look at randomly chosen answers from other peoples randomly chosen questions. There honestly nothing to talk about here. You’re just looking at random peoples answers. It’s even more boring when half of the answers are just blindly praising Nintendo for for making the app. You can get an interesting answer, but they are few and far between.miitomo-update-4

The 5th and final “feature” to the game comes in the form of Mii sidekicks. With this, you can now make multiple Mii’s which can now be used to send private messages, be sent to Style Central, and even get their own room to customize. This is by far the most useless addition to the game since you’ve already been able to add more Mii’s to your game by importing QR codes. It feels like an afterthought. It’s as if they really wanted to boast 5 new features but couldn’t think of a good 5th one.miitomo-update-5

In the end, Miitomo fell victim to the fate of all mobile games. Hollow content with no incentive to continue playing, but it didn’t have to be this way. I believe that if they try hard enough, Nintendo could rule the mobile market with an iron fist. Now, with Super Mario Run just around the corner, here’s what their future mobile games can do to make sure they’re a success!smr

1: Make sure all features are fully fleshed out

I know I know. This sounds super weird and obvious, but hear me out. Miitomo’s biggest problem in my opinion is that the game has some really interesting ideas to it, but all the features feel unfinished. Room customization is cool, but only being able to change the walls and floor is pretty boring. Why can’t I choose what furniture appears in my place, and how come I can’t put a poster just in the middle of a wall? Nintendo, if you’re planning on having the mobile version of Animal Crossing just be some watered down version of Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer where all you do is move furniture and collectible figures, I implore you to not do that. No one wants to play that.animal-crossing-mobile

2. Use a variety of I.P’s, not just the current popular ones.

Nintendo has always had this bad habit of over exposing their I.P’s once they become popular. We saw this with both Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem. AC suffered the worst a very bare bones decorating sim that was Happy Home Designer, and an abysmally depressing microtransaction slog that was Amiibo Festival. After so much exposure in such a small amount of time, people begin to grow bored of the same I.P’s, which is why so many people were attracted to Splatoon a breath of fresh air. Maybe instead of using Fire Emblem, you could use Advanced Wars. Instead of Animal Crossing, try using the Donkey Kong Country characters! There are so many other characters you own that could breathe new life on mobile. Doodle Jump esque Ice Climbers game anyone?ice-climbers

3. Go paid, not Free to Play

Another suggestion that sounds insane, I know. While yes, a free app will initially attract more people to a game, the game will struggle with keeping those same people if they can’t get people to pay for in app purchases. While it seems like Super Mario Run will be a paid title, I think the smartest thing to do is keep future titles that way also. I know it was announced a couple of months ago that Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem which were originally scheduled to be paid games, ended up making the jump to F2P. I say switch back to the one time payment. If you can create a fire emblem experience on phones that’s just as good as the 3DS, and you’re not charging people $5 every time you want a fallen ally revived, word of mouth and positive buzz can sell the game alone! fire_emblem_awakening_gameplay

Yes, Nintendo may be struggling a bit in the mobile space right now, but I believe that by following this advice laid out for them, that they could truly rule over their own mobile empire. Only time will what happens, but here’s hoping for the best for the company I love.

In the previous Nintendo Direct, nestled among the numerous new titles announced was news of an update to the much-beloved Nintendo 3DS game, Animal Crossing: New Leaf. The update, entitled “Welcome amiibo,” was briefly touched upon but viewers were promised a more-indepth video later in the year. Well, that time has almost arrived. Tomorrow, November 2, at 7 a.m. Pacific Time, an Animal Crossing: New Leaf-centric Nintendo Direct will air.

Beyond the video, the official Animal Crossing twitter account has released a few screenshots as well as a note that the update will clear out all those weeds in your town that have no doubt accumulated.

And let’s not forget about those 50 new Animal Crossing amiibo cards that release December 2! What an exciting time to be a mayor, right?

A couple of weeks go we reported that Nintendo had announced that Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem would be making their way to mobile devices this fall.

When originally announced last year, Nintendo said that the only Free to Play mobile game would be Miitomo and that the rest would be fully priced apps. Well, it seems like they changed their minds. During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, DeNA executive Isao Moriyasu  confirmed that the 2 upcoming mobile titles would be free. The change isn’t completely unjustified, as Miitomo was able to reach the 10 million download mark within a little less than 2 months of being out. The app was also estimated as raking in about $280,000 per week. Are you looking forward to these apps now that they’re free, or do you think the in app purchases could ruin the experience for you now? Tell us in the comments below!

Late last night, Nintendo held their fiscal earnings announcement, and revealed a lot of details that may be a bit disappointing short term, but there were certainly some positive things that stood out.

Along with revealing the NX launch window, Nintendo has announced that the next 2 mobile titles that are planned for launch will be based on Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem, but perhaps not exactly how you’d expect them to be.

Animal Crossing has been explained in terms of sounding more like a companion app you can use with the console iterations, while Fire Emblem looks to maintain its strategy roots, albeit making it a bit more accessible to newcomers.

Both have been announced to be more in line with a traditional Nintendo game than Miitomo (on an unrelated note, what’s up with that level 20 cap?), and both games are set to launch this Fall.

When in Fall? That’s yet to be determined? Are you excited for this next round of mobile games? What franchise do you want to see get the mobile treatment *cough DONKEY KONG cough*. Tell us your ideas in the comments!

Make ready your Amiibo-tapping fingers, because a wave of new details have just been announced! Nintendo is continuing to feed our Amiibo fever by launching new Amiibo, unveiling release dates, and even providing details on how some of the new figures will work!

First, details regarding the Wolf Link amiibo and its functionality in the Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD.  The physical version of the game includes both the Wolf Link Amiibo and the game, and it launches March 4 at a suggested retail price of $59.99!  As described in our earlier article, the other currently available Legend of Zelda Amiibo figures will also activate special effects within the game, so it may be worth picking them up at the same time (if you don’t already own them)!  Also, it has been announced that the Wolf Link amiibo will be compatible with the Wii U Legend of Zelda game launching later this year, although we still don’t have details on Amiibo functionality or release date for that title.

lozwolflink

Next up, March 18 will see the launch of several new amiibo from the Animal Crossing series!  Namely, the new Amiibo that will be available are Timmy and Tommy, Kapp’n, and Rover.  Digby, which was previously only available with the Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival bundle, will also be available as a stand-alone amiibo.  All of the currently released physical Animal Crossing amiibo, including the upcoming ones, are based on major NPC characters (such as shop owners) in the Animal Crossing universe, and are largely used in Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, although several of them can also be used to unlock Super Mario Maker costumes.  Also, later on in March, the third wave of Animal Crossing Amiibo cards will be launched, expanding the catalog of available cards to a whopping 300!  Animal Crossing cards are based on the NPC villagers that can move into a town with the main character, although there are card versions of the major NPCs as well–these cards are used mainly with Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer where you can build a home for each villager and save the created home to the card.  They can also be used in Amiibo Festival, although only with side-games.  For more information on specific functionality with amiibo, please check Nintendo’s amiibo compatibility list.

NOVEL_ura_0613

Another game that has been announced with Amiibo functionality is Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.  Both the Mario and Sonic Amiibo can be used with this game, and these will activate a “daily power” that will boost each individual character.  Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games has a launch date of March 18, at a suggested retail price of $39.99.

3DS_MSROG_case_pkg01

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pokémon, some of the Pokémon Amiibo will be available again at select retailers.  Prepare for the return of Charizard, Jigglypuff, Greninja, and Lucario!  Note that it doesn’t mention Mewtwo, but based on my own travels, Mewtwo stock doesn’t seem hard to find (yet).  Who knows–maybe amiibo functionality with a new Pokémon game is right around the corner!

And finally, Amiibo compatibility has been confirmed for Star Fox Zero, launching exclusively on Wii U on April 22.  More details on Amiibo functionality with the title will be revealed at a later date.  The Star Fox franchise is one of Nintendo’s strongest, following several anthropomorphic animal space pilots on their various intergalactic missions.  After our recent expeditions on the planet Mira with Xenoblade Chronicles, and the resurgence of Star Wars with Episode VII, we are looking forward to jumping back into the deep reaches of space with Fox and his crew, using the Wii U’s GamePad as our cockpit!

How do you feel about this new wave of Amiibo news?  Has it forced your Amiibo fever to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit?  Please let us know in the comments!

Animal Crossing Fans have had it pretty rough this year.

While a lot of people did enjoy the series new 3DS outing Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer,  many still felt like it wasn’t a fully realized game. Even more disappointing was the release of Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, which failed to please both fans and critics by being a slow moving board game with little to no fun and painful amiibo integration. Fear not though, as one fan has taken it upon himself to show us what he thinks the next installment should look like.

In a video new series titled Make Believe, host Josh Thomas takes us through all the new features that would make the next Animal Crossing stand out from the crowd. Without ruining any surprises, let’s just say that this video might LIFT your spirits about getting a new entry. Check out the video below!

We’re super excited for a new StreetPass weekend that has just been announced, beginning tomorrow, November 26 and ending on November 29!

Streetpass is one of the 3DS’ most popular features, allowing users to be able to passively exchange data between systems, just by being near another player with a 3DS system.  This can be used to amazing effect, such as with Streetpass Mii Plaza, where you can gather warriors to play in an RPG style game, or with Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire where meeting other players through Streetpass can get you access to their Secret Bases (special in-game hideouts), and even access to a special mythical Pokémon!

During National Streetpass weekends, you can visit one of many locations with a Nintendo Zone to get streetpass tags. The most common locations are Best Buy, McDonalds, and even Home Depot!  This breaks the “traditional” rules of how Streetpass works, allowing you to get Streetpass tags of many people around the country who have also visited the same Zones that you have.

SP

Not only that, but you’ll also be able to obtain two special in-game events when you connect to Nintendo Zones this weekend–the ability to build a home for Felyne in Animal Crossing : Happy Home Designer, as well as obtaining Hoopa for Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, a Pokémon that has never been released before–although Hoopa is only available specifically at McDonald’s Nintendo Zone locations.

Animal Crossing : Happy Home Designer is a 3DS title that was released in September (that our correspondent El Chucho loves), and allows you to create homes for many residents of an Animal Crossing town.  Felyne is a special character only previously seen in the Monster Hunter franchise, and by downloading his content, you get access to tons of Monster Hunter related items for your game.  This has been a fantastic collaboration by Nintendo and the Monster Hunter franchise, and although it was previously available through the internet before, it is again available this weekend at Nintendo Zones!

Hoopa is a never-before released legendary Pokémon.  It is a Psychic/Dark type that has access to the super powerful move Hyperspace Fury!  With this devastating move, Hoopa sends its six arms and six rings flying to surround its foe and attack from all directions, even if the target has tried to defend itself with moves like Protect or Detect!  In order to acquire Hoopa, be sure to choose the Mystery Gift option in-game while at the Nintendo Zone.

This Friday, the next major batch of Amiibo, Nintendo’s wildly popular line of toys to life figurines, will make their debut alongside Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival. Serving as the series’ first Amiibo representation outside of the Smash Bros. Villager, our favorite animal friends like Isabelle, K.K. Slider and the slumlord, Tom Nook, will finally be represented in figure form. If those aren’t enough for you, Mega Yarn Yoshi will release a mere two days later, exclusively at Toys R Us. Having special functionality in Yoshi’s Wooly World and sizing up as the largest Amiibo to date, (as well as coming with the highest price tag, with an MSRP of $39.99,) many a gamer will have a new friend to keep them warm during these long, winter nights.

Luckily, we were able to get an in person preview of some of these figures in advance. While we wait patiently for the day when these new toys can take up more of our shelf space, here are a few shots to hold you over until the weekend rolls around.

Amiibo Animal Crossing

Nook is thinking of ways to rip us off as we speak.

Amiibo Isabelle

Best girl.

Amiibo Mega Yarn YoshiJust the right cuddle size.

Between the sloped bases of the Animal Crossing set and the care that Yarn Yoshi seems like it received, it’s possible that these might become my favorite Amiibo yet! Which ones are you planning on picking up this weekend? Share your Amiibo plans with us in the comments below. And remember, this is a No Shades Zone!

For a genre that’s meant to bring family and friends together for some lighthearted fun, party games have this terrible habit of making people hate each other. Never just letting the roll of the dice decide the game, it’s become commonplace for the genre to rely on mini games, item collecting, and the ability to sabotage other players. While entertaining, it’s wise not to play with people that you actually want to stay friends with when the day is over.

Which is why after playing Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, I was pleasantly surprised to find that none of that tomfoolery was present when it came to our animal friends. Supporting up to four players with each Amiibo serving as a game piece, (much like Mario Party 10‘s Amiibo Party mode, complete with the annoying need to tap your character with each dice roll,) the citizens of the village aren’t out to harm their friends, but instead, spread happiness throughout the town. Each section on the board represents an activity, whether it’s shopping, styling your hair or participating in a competition. After an adorable scene plays out describing the event, it will award either Happy Points or Bells, with the latter being used to cash in for more of the former. The player with the most happy points at the end wins, spreading some much needed joy to the bloodthirsty world of virtual board games. That’s not to say that there aren’t ways to end up losing points or for other players to gain an advantage, but don’t expect three on one gang beatings either.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival Screen 2Each space describes an activity in town, like a trip to the salon!

In addition to this mostly passive method of play, the maps themselves are inspired by Animal Crossing‘s calendar system. With each turn taking up one day, the scenery and weather will change with each passing day. Though the amount of time a game takes can be customized, the standard matches will run through one full month, complete with special events for any holidays that happen to fall in that time frame. It manages to capture the spirit of why the series is so popular within a completely different genre.

With all of that said, that’s not to say that the mini games aren’t there. More specifically, Amiibo Festival has a dedicated mini game mode, pushing the theme of friendship even further by forcing the animals to work together in what can only be described as Nintendo’s version of Lost. Trapped on an island, the animal team has a certain amount of turns to gather materials to build a raft for their escape while quelling their hunger at the same time. Using materials to build tools like fishing rods for food, shovels for digging up hidden Pitfalls that would cost you your turn otherwise, or saving them for your great escape, this side game asks the animals to pool together their resources to meet a common goal. The catch? This mode can only be played with those Amiibo cards you might have seen pop up in stores for minutes at a time. While the game comes packaged with a few, it’s not enough to play the full island game, so you’re going to have to drop a few extra Bells if you want the complete experience. This goes double for the main mode, which will obviously need two more figures outside of the bundled Isabelle and Digsby if you want to experience four player games.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival Screen 1Mabel would be getting shoved off the podium if this was Mario Party.

With only a week away before the festival hits our doorstep, we can’t wait to put some time into the full game. It’s unique take on the party genre that Nintendo revolutionized so many years ago has the potential to be a huge hit with families or the type of gamers who want a more passive experience. My only concern so far is whether or not the less competitive nature of Amiibo Festival will take away from some of its long term appeal. Still, it’s impossible to deny that the game is shaping up to be a crowd pleaser for fans of the series, and we’ll make sure to deliver our full impressions once Animal Crossing returns to consoles on November 13th.

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer hit the United States last September and Nintendo is doing its best to make sure that we don’t forget about the addictive title. Between a very special SpotPass visitor and the next round of the Happy Home Network Design Contest, they’ve just revealed a bunch of new items to collect!

Let’s talk about the SpotPass content first. Should the SpotPass feature be enabled, a Felyne from Capcom’s Monster Hunter series will make a visit to your town as a potential client. The character model is based of off  the design from Monster Hunter Poka Poka Airu Village, a Nintendo 3DS game that takes place in a Felyne village. The Felyne’s home request unlocks a set of Monster Hunter-themed items, including the porcine Poogie, a BBQ spit, and the Quest Board. This content became available on Monday, November 2, and it’s unknown when it will no longer be downloadable.

November’s edition of the Happy Home Network Design Contest is themed around the concept of “A Battle Between Giants.” Those that participate in the competition are required to use a Robot Hero and an Inflatable Resetti in their design. You will get to keep these awe-inspiring pieces of furniture upon completing the challenge. Luckily enough, you don’t have to win; just compete! Trying your best would be awesome too, though. Who wouldn’t want to be featured on the network for the whole world to admire?

Are you playing Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer? Have you become addicted to the Amiibo Cards yet? Sound out below!

American’s are the brunt of a lot of jokes, mostly ones about our propensity for larger things. Larger cars. Larger soda. Larger women. So when Nintendo had NO plans for a US release of the New 3DS it became vogue to make fun of us and our New 3DS XL’s. WELL WHO’S LAUGHING NOW?!

Announced today at the Gamestop Managers Conference, which is apparently a thing, Nintendo is bringing the smaller 3DS console to US shores with a few fancy bundles.

New3DS_ACHHD_Final_Render

Bundle Includes:

New 3DS

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer

Two changeable faceplaces

1 Amiibo card.

The Animal Crossing New 3DS bundle hits store shelves September 25th for $219

The other new console we’re getting our hands on a special Hyrule Edition 3DS XL. No pictures have been released yet, but it will be gold with the Hyrule Crest on the front. Pick it up as a Gamestop exclusive on October 30th for $199.

It’s awesome to see Nintendo finally bringing the smaller console to the US shores. The interchangeable faceplates are strangely absent on the XL edition, a huge oversight in my mind.

Let us know what you think about the new bundles, are you excited for the smaller 3DS? You KNOW our correspondent El Chucho is going to be getting his preorders in today!

If you already thought your wallet was in trouble after this morning’s Amiibo announcements, you may want to avert your eyes from the following image:

Leak

Yeah. So this image came straight from Nintendo’s European site, and it’s scary as hell. Sure, we see a bunch of Amiibo that we already own, as well as the Yarn Yoshi and Amiibo cards that we already knew about, but the image also features and awesome looking 30th Anniversary Mario figure, as well as figures depicting Animal Crossing‘s Tom Nook, Isabelle, Mabel, and K.K. Slider.

Could we be getting a Wii U version of Animal Crossing? I just got into the series, so I damned well hope so.

Another edition of Nintendo Direct has come and gone, and as promised, we left with a ton of new details on numerous 3DS titles. From Zelda, to Layton and Mario’s latest party, handheld owners will have their hands full within the coming months. With that said, the Wii U got a few bones thrown at it as well! Without further ado, here are the highlights from this morning’s conference Be warned: some of the content below contains spoilers.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has a new trailer! If you weren’t hyped enough, new details about new characters like Irene the witch, (who is essentially used for fast travel,) and Seres, (essentially the game’s Zelda replacement,) were shown, as well as Zora Flippers, which allow Link to swim.

– Zelda Street Pass functionality was revealed and it sounds really awesome! Players will create their own Shadow Link, complete with an item loadout and a set amount of hearts. The stronger the Link, the higher the bounty, which will be awarded to others who can find the shadow on the map and take him down.

Mario Party Island Tour is also coming on November 22nd and allows download play for all seven of the game’s boards! Street Pass was also detailed, letting players compete in mini games against up to 10 ghost Mii’s. If you’re more of a loner, a single player “Bowser’s Tower” will have us competing in 30 floors worth of games, each one getting progressively harder until the boss fights that take place once every five floors.

Bravely Default features a wide variety of customization for the in game party, including abilities, jobs, spells and appearances. Some new mechanics include the Default System, a defensive stance that builds Brave Points that can be used to unleash powerful attacks when switched to the Brave System,  Sleep Points, which can be built up using a time stopping ability or while the system is in sleep mode, than can be exchanged for more powerful moves, and Street Pass, which brings other characters into battles to aid you, (if they’re not chosen to help rebuild your town.)

Bravely Default is releasing on February 7th, complete with a collectors edition. This contains the game, a set of AR cards, a soundtrack and an art book. Pricing has yet to be announced.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy will close out the second, (and presumably last,) Layton trilogy when it arrives on the 3DS on February 28th. It’ll be fun to see Layton, Luke an Emmy’s final adventure through, but I can’t say I’m ready to say goodbye to the professor. At least we have the Phoenix Wright crossover to look forward to!

– Nintendo Zone locations will be distributing the (formerly,) exclusive Best Buy Animal Crossing: New Leaf items throughout November, as well as a special item block for Super Mario 3D Land. Contents are unknown, but it might be worth checking out the next time you’re at a Starbucks.

– Possibly the biggest news of the day, a December system update will allow Wii U and 3DS currency to be combined. So if you have $5 burning a hole in your Wii U wallet, transfer it over to the 3DS! Because if this presentation has taught me anything, it’s that the 3DS has way more content to use it on.

– Miiverse support will also be added along with this update, so now you’ll be able to take your awkward screenshots and witty commentary with you, assuming you can access the Internet of course.

– Other updates include YouTube on the handheld and an upgraded YouTube app for Wii U, both of which will be available later this month.

– Finally, we shift to the Wii U. In addition to the two packs already released, Pikmin 3 will receive a third wave of downloadable content. Unlike the previous downloads, which were made up of remixed stages from the on disc story and mission content, this wave contains all new stages not found anywhere else in the game. Taking Olimar to stages like construction sites, the inside of homes, beaches and factories, the first Pikmin protagonist will be tasked with finding Louie on the map, who will then be playable, allowing them to take on multiple tasks at once.

Pikmin 3 DLC 3

– The DLC will be released on December 2nd and consist of eight total stages. These four treasure stages and four battle stages didn’t have a price tag attached to them, but one of each type will be free to all players who download the update for the content, both of which take place in the “Fortress of Festivity.”

– The Animal Crossing Plaza is getting a slew of updates! 50 Miiverse stamps are being added, so those who can’t draw to save their life, (like me,) can post decent pictures of the cast. Polls are also being introduced, letting the community vote on such important issues as, “who is the best secretary?” or, “who is the neighbor of the year?” Considering the game has only one secretary, I’m expecting a landslide. The update will go live later this evening.

– Future updates will include resident registration, so you can keep track of who is in your in game town, a function allowing Miiverse posts to be saved in the photo album and the ability to move and delete multiple photos at once. When they will be available is unknown, but I’d guess 2014 since that’s when the app is scheduled to go down.

– An indie game sizzle reel showed off a ton of content, including 1001 Spikes, Jett Rocket 2, the new Shantae and Retro City Rampage for the 3DS. You can check out the video showing off all of the indie game goodness below.

– And finally, we have 10 new things in Super Mario 3D World. From bonus modes to kart themed stages and 3D puzzles, it seems like the game will feature a ton of content we were never expecting, including one big reveal that I won’t post here. Watch the trailer below if you’re feeling adventurous, but trust me when I say it’s a great reason to get excited.

And… that’s about it? What news was the most exciting part for you all? I know I’m hyped about 3D World more than ever, but even games like Mario Party and Zelda, which I was planning on waiting on, sound hard to resist. But I’ve talked enough. Sound off and let us know what Nintendo content you’re most excited about leading into 2014!

This morning, gamers woke up to a collective head scratching. Nintendo has announced a redesign of their popular 3DS handheld, complete with a price drop and the removal of the clam shell design. Did we mention that it’s no longer 3D?

Removing the feature that the handheld was named after, this “2DS” will launch day and date with Pokemon X and Y on October 12th for $129. Serving as an entry level system, Nintendo is hoping to reach that five and six year old market, since the 3DS blinded anyone not over seven.

Aside from the loss of the 3D function and the ability to keep your screens from getting mauled in your pockets, the system will retain all of its other features. This includes, front and back cameras, (the latter which will still take 3D pictures,) DS backwards compatibility, Wi-Fi and Wireless access, a 4GB SD card and stereo output through headphones. All in all, a cheaper solution for those who have yet to buy what is the best gaming machine on the market right now if you were to ask me.

Can I just say that I’m happy to see the 3D go? Sure, some games like Kid Icarus Uprising looked great with the effect, but most games ignore it or treat it as an afterthought. It drains battery and is VERY unfriendly to portable gaming. For a system meant to play on the go, I can’t stand using 3D for more than a minute when in a moving vehicle that bounces my hands around, causing double vision better than a night of boozing ever could. While glasses free 3D is kind of cool, there’s a reason that 3D was a failed experiment of the 80’s. Welcome to the 21st Century, DS!

Do you think the 2DS will push sales through the roof this holiday? Will you be getting one? What do you think of the new design? Sound off in the comments and let us know.

Briefly: We’re now hours into YouTube Geek Week’s Gaming Thursday, and I’ve just watched another absolutely hilarious video that’s simply too good not to share.

I’m not an Animal Crossing player myself, but I do know what it’s all about. Plus, the fact that I haven’t seen my 3DS since New Leaf launched in June means that I do have people close to me who are under its astonishing spell.

“Friends With Animals” features two suburban dads who are a little too obsessed with the game. It’s a rap video like no other, and one that had my New Leaf addicted girlfriend in stitches throughout. Take a look at the video below, and head here to see everything else that Gaming Thursday has to offer!

http://youtu.be/UERzZzOHU9w

At the end of this morning’s Nintendo Direct video, Satoru Iwata shared the stage with Isabelle, the incredibly stunning assistant to the mayor in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and unveiled Animal Crossing Plaza for Wii U. When is it coming, you ask? That’s the best part, because we’ll have to wait for a grand total of… nothing! That’s right, the plaza is available now!

Acting as its own version of WaraWara Plaza, (where Mii’s you come across talk about the latest games they’re playing,) 3DS mayors will be able to use their SD cards on the Wii U to share screenshots, QR codes for those outfits you’ve spent hours making, and discuss villagers with other players. Outside of the plaza, a special Miiverse community has opened up for the series, so Wii U owners can set up all the shady trades they want directly through Nintendo now.

The bad part? The service will only be available until the end of 2014, so soak it up while you can. It has to be a first for a company to announce that they’re dropping support for a feature right after it’s announced, but maybe it’s incentive for all those New Leaf owners to buy a Wii U? Nah, didn’t think so.

Who else can’t wait to WaraWara with their villagers?

Throughout the summer, Nintendo and Best Buy partnered up to offer four exclusive SpotPass items for Animal Crossing: New Leaf. With the last item expiring in a few days, it seems like the big N is continuing the fun, only this time, sans Best Buy.

By taking your 3DS to any Nintendo Zone location, villagers can carry over one of four items starting Sunday, August 11th, with new pieces coming every two weeks. The first item is a Pumpkin Pie, but the remaining three items are yet to be revealed. And if you’re going to trash talk pumpkin pie, just stop. It’s too delicious for criticism. Damn it, I’m hungry now.

Join Nintendo and their conspiracy to jump start pie sales three months before Thanksgiving this Sunday! You might even get a few StreetPasses while you’re there.

Continuing their partnership with Nintendo after their exclusive E3 preview events, Best Buy will be the host of some pretty neat Animal Crossing items starting today through August 10th. But just because you have a month and a half to collect items doesn’t mean you should take your time. Four items will be given out over the course of the summer, and once they’re gone, they’re really gone!

Below are the dates that each item will be given. Just take your 3DS to your local Best Buy and connect to the Nintendo Zone with SpotPass to claim your prize!

The Raccoon Wall Clock

June 16-June 29th

The Cat Tower

June 30th-July 13th

The Rolling Suitcase

July 14th-July 27th

The Double-Neck Guitar

July 28th-August 10th

Check Nintendo’s website for complete details, and happy hunting, fellow mayors!

After years of anticipation, Super Smash Bros was finally revealed for 3DS and Wii U. Between the Animal Crossing villager and Mega Man joining the cast, if you are a Smash fan and weren’t jumping out of your seat at these reveals, then you have no soul!

BUT!… with all of the excitement floating around at these monster reveals, it was easy to miss some of the more subtle hints at the changes coming to the popular fighter. After hitting repeat more times than Selena Gomez, there are tons of smaller reveals hidden throughout the three minutes worth of video. Let’s take a look back and see what we can spot!

Once the 3DS version comes on screen, notice how all of the levels are based off of portable games, (Ocarina of Time 3D, Spirit Tracks, Mario 3D Land and Nintendogs for example,) whereas the Wii U version only had console stages. Does this mean each version will have separate stages, or was this just to signify that one was portable and one was a home console release?

Speaking of Spirit Tracks, Toon Link is seen in his conductor outfit at the front of the train. For some fighting games, characters in the background signify that they won’t be playable. Does that mean Toon Link is out? Or a console exclusive character if the train stage is indeed 3DS exclusive? Or will he just disappear from the background if he’s being used?

Pit from Kid Icarus made his Smash debut in Brawl, but since then, he’s received a new game with so a weapon loadout so huge it would make Borderlands jealous. Problem is, none of those weapons were represented aside from the bow. Thankfully, that’s changing, because at 1:17, Pit can clearly be seen using the Upperdash Arm, which obviously wasn’t in the last entry. As a huge fan of Uprising, this was one of my biggest requests, and I’m glad to see Pit getting an upgrade.

Pit’s power of flight also looks changed, with a diagonal jump instead of a continuous flying ability that starts straight up. If this is the case, it looks like our favorite angel might have tons of new tricks. The big question is: will this move set be from the ground up or will it integrate his old moves? And if he is brand new, what happens to his old move set? I’d hate to see it disappear, but I can’t realistically see another slot being taken up by say… Dark Pit just so the old moves can come back, though I wouldn’t  be opposed to it.

Samus seems to have a suit of armor closely resembling her Other M suit. Her Final Smash also seems to let her aim a small amount compared to the last game where it just went straightforward. Huh… I wonder if she’s going to have to ask for permission before she can use it?

Donkey Kong’s spinning punch that he’s had since the first game looked tilted. Has the classic move been tweaked?

Bowser was seen doing a few new normal attacks, including a low drop kick. Seems like he’s getting a move makeover as well, which is fine since he was exactly the same in the last two games.

Many of the fights are taking place in what appears to be a Skyward Sword stage. Combining this with the Spirit Tracks and Gerudo Valley stages, and that’s at least three new Zelda stages between the two versions. What can I say? The series is popular!

Another stage is what looks like a boxing ring. Is this simply the new Battlefield and Final Destination stage that abandons stage gimmicks for a flat battleground meant for straight up battles? Or is this hinting at the inclusion of another franchise down the line? Here’s hoping for Little Mac!

The Animal Crossing Villager’s move set makes him seem oblivious that he’s even fighting. He’s seen using his Balloon Fighter hat to fly, dropping bowling balls, cutting down trees, digging holes and even grabbing projectiles and putting them in his pocket. He’s already looking like one of the more interesting characters move wise. I can’t wait to try him out!

Mega Man’s reveal had a few peculiarities of its own. First, his multiple boss moves were featured, but will they all be special moves like we’re used to? Most likely, they’re integrated both into his normal and special attacks, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Mega’s reveal was ushered in with the phrase, “Mega Man joins the battle!” The previous games used the phrases, “joins the Melee” and “joins the Brawl.” Since I doubt the games will be simply titled Smash Bros Wii U and Smash Bros 3DS, what are the chances that the final title will be Smash Bros BattleSince Villager had a different phrase, I’m almost positive this won’t be the case, but it would be a good way to sneak it in if this were to become the name.

When Mega Man dies, rather than the usual flash that accompanies a fall, his trademark explosion triggers instead. This matches his obvious NES style movement, including his idle pose, his jump and his appearance while taking damage.

Rush is seen using his Rush Coil ability. I’m guessing this is Mega Man’s Up-B attack that helps him spring back up, (much like Sonic.) Will Rush be integrated into any of his other moves?

Right at the end, the trailer teases Mega Man going up against the Yellow Devil boss. While this confirms at least one third party boss, does this mean the return of a single player mode like Subspace in Brawl? Is this simply an event challenge for the Blue Bomber? Or am I over-examining it and Yellow Devil is a stage hazard?

So after meticulously watching the video over and over again, this is the best that I’ve got. Are any of my observations off? Did you find any of your own that I missed? And how awesome is it that Pit has near limitless potential with an Uprising themed move set!? All these questions just make the wait going into 2014 that much harder! You know the drill. Watch the trailer and let us know below!

Another Nintendo Direct has come and gone, and while there wasn’t too much information relating to new games, we did get details on some of the big titles gamers have been waiting angrily patiently for.

Below are the highlights of the conference. Make sure to check back for more detailed information throughout the day.

Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games coming to the Wii U and 3DS. Featuring many new events, most notably races that combine events into one arcade style Dream Event.

Sonic Lost World coming exclusively to Wii U and 3DS.

-A large amount of Game Gear titles coming soon to the 3DS eShop. Knuckles Chaotix was not spotted…

-Nintendo Japan announced Yakuza 1-2 HD for the Wii U. No word on a Western release.

Oracle of Seasons and Ages will be discounted to $4.99 each until June 20th. Release date is May 30th.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D details new world 9. Each level inspired by one of each previous stage.

Animal Crossing Mii Plaza puzzle and Swapnote available now. Videos discussing the game will be on Nintendo’s YouTube page leading to its June 9th release.

Game and Wario features a variety of mini games for both single and multiplayer. Releasing on June 23rd for $39.99.

Resident Evil: Revelations will have Game Pad, Pro Control and off TV support. New infernal difficulty, online features and characters, Hunk and Rachel, added to Raid Mode. Coming May 21st.

New Super Luigi 2 seems to give each character unique abilities like Luigi’s flutter jump from Mario 2. Mario replaced by Nabbit, who can’t power up but can’t get hurt. Releasing on June 20th as DLC for $19.99 or as a stand alone retail game or $29.99 on August 25th.

The Wonderful 101 is (FINALLY!) coming to Wii U on September 25th.

Pikmin 3 stars three new characters, Alph, Charlie and Brittany, who are collecting fruit for their starving planet. The game will use a variety of GamePad functions to help scout stages and re-watch playthroughs. Uses Wii Remote Plus, Pro Controller and off TV play both with the pad and with the Wii Remote using the pad as a monitor. Still scheduled for August 4th.

-Last and most importantly, Best Buy will exclusively house playable E3 demos for the Wii U in the U.S. and Canada, letting consumers experience the new games for themselves.

So that’s about it. While I wish there was more info on new games, I guess that’s what E3 is for. And at least we finally know when Wonderful 101 is coming out! Now onwards to E3.

Nintendo is a sensitive company, some say the heart of the video game industry. That’s pretty apparent when you factor in that they obviously scheduled their North American Nintendo Direct press conference for midnight EST tonight to steer clear of all those hardcore Nintendo fans who were also watching Game 5 of the NBA Finals… RIGHT?!? Well, that one didn’t go into overtime… or even into a Game 6. Regardless, I’m STILL going to provide a little “postgame” as I address the positives and negatives of Nintendo’s presser.

If you want to watch the entire Nintendo Direct press conference for yourself, here it is:

– Let’s start with the “Who Gives a Damn?”

The new Nintendo 3DS XL will be released on August 19th for $199.99

It comes with a new 4.88 inch top screen (up from 3.5 inches) and a bottom screen of 4.18 inches (from the original 3). Let me tell you why I don’t care.

Because if you’re the kind of Nintendo nerd like me who watches an online streaming press conference… you already own a 3DS and you have for a year (or at least since the “games” came out in November). On top of that, the idea of a bigger 3DS really defeats the point of a portable system. I look at the kids playing their Nintendo DS XLs at our local meet-ups (yeah, I go to 3DS meet-ups… fuck you) and they look like they’re playing Angry Birds on an iPad. I don’t want a bigger 3DS. I’m not 90 years old. A 3DS XL is the equivalent of those enormous remote controls they sell to old people at Bed Bath and Beyond. No. Gracias.

The biggest missed opportunity here is that they didn’t take the time to add a second analog pad (ie. what the hardcore Nintendo gamers wanted). Whoops!

Namco Bandai is teaming with Project Sora for a new Smash Bros. game

This game will be for the 3DS and WiiU. And you’ll probably get to beat the crap out of PacMan. I’ll say it right now. I don’t like the Smash Bros. games. I could care less. I’m sorry. But I’m not a 16 year old Asian kid playing in a sweaty tournament in the basement of a Motel 6 out off the 60 freeway. If you kids want to watch a bunch of button mashing ridiculousness while yelling at each other about how close that last save was (umm… there are a LOT of saves in these games) then knock yourself out. No. Actually knock yourself out… with a human fist. Then you’d actually feel something for once.

Let’s be clear: Fighting games are for gamers who were too afraid to play contact sports. First Person Shooters are for gamers who at one time tried contact sports but were embarrassingly awful at them.

The New Super Mario Bros. 2 3DS game available August 19th will have paid DLC

Nintendo drew a line on DLC… but it looks like that line is starting to bend towards breaking. The new Fire Emblem game will supposedly have some DLC as well. Not cool, Nintendo. New Super Mario Bros. 2 is already looking like a thinner version of the original with the Golden Shower Coin Grab Mode a not that fun attempt to add Street Pass features to the game. That WILL get old fast. Please prove me wrong and make this game as substantial as the original DS title. But something about the sound of “future DLC” and “day and date downloadable and retail title” have me worried.

And no DLC on games like Mario Kart!?! I know. You’re sick of me bitching on Geekscape about wanting downloadable tracks for Mario Kart. It HAS to happen one day. It HAS to.

New Pokemon Stuff

Sorry, Pokemon fans. I got to this part of the press conference, my wife entered the room and realized what I was watching and I felt like a complete loser. I turned it off because I couldn’t care less about the Pokemons. I know that at one time I had TWO Mewtwos and was the elite trainer on my block (and easily the oldest) but that was 13 years ago. That ship has sailed for me and you’d already cost me any chance of having sex tonight. I had to bail.

By the way. Huge surprise. There’ll be new Pokemon stuff.

– Okay. So what was The Good?!?

Animal Crossing 3DS is coming and it will have Streetpass

Great. A bunch of strangers can visit my town and threaten to chop down all my trees via Streetpass. I’m cool with it. There’ll also be tarot card readings. I knew that this game (especially Tom Nook) was evil and Satanic but now it’s starting to all come to light. I skipped City Folk on the Wii but sign me up for this one. You had me at Streetpass. And Satanism.

Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance has a demo NOW on the eShop

I still want to call this game Kingdom Hearts: Egg Drop Soup. In any event, it’s coming and it’s coming soon. You can wet your appetites already. Say what I will about Nintendo and their eShop but these demos have been great and they’ve been treating them in a fantastic way. Keep them coming.

Professor Layton is finally coming to your 3DS

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle was a Japanese 3DS launch title. So why haven’t we seen it in the States yet? Has localization really taken this long? Whatever the puzzle may be, I’m glad it’s finally solved. We’ll be seeing this game in November (news to which my wife responded with “Merry Christmas!”). I’m already giving thanks.

New Titles Coming to the 3DS Virtual Console

The big ones are that Legend of Zelda is coming July 5th for Non-Ambassadors (jerks… I’ve been playing it for months!) and that Super Mario Land will have a price drop to $2.99 through the end of June. Also, new games will be arriving once a week this summer, including Kid Icarus: Of Myths, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Sonic Blast and Sonic Labyrinth (which 5 people played).

– Now for The Inexcusable

STILL NO WORD ON A 3DS SPECIFIC ZELDA TITLE! COME ON!!!!

WTF. It didn’t happen at E3. It didn’t happen tonight (which we could have guessed). But this is something that Nintendo has been hinting at for months. We loved the 3DS port of Ocarina of Time (it’s easily the best version of the game) but that’s a game that’s 13 years old now. I know that it wasn’t a Nintendo 64 launch title and we had to wait a while for that too but does the 3DS have that kind of time? Do portables have the same lifespans as consoles? This is something that has to have a 2013 release date on it or it runs the risk of becoming yesterday’s news (especially if the WiiU sports a console Zelda title).

Skyward Sword was a complete fetch quest of a game. It’s really one of the worst of the series and I’d only list it as playable for it’s motion controls, final dungeon and final fight scene. A 3DS port of Majora’s Mask would only stop the bleeding for a month or two. A new interpretation of Link to the Past would be interesting. But really, what any Zelda and 3DS fan wants is a true 3DS designed Zelda game. And not something like Spirit Tracks or the other DS title. Those were fun but got buried in their own backtracking (although using the Wind Waker art direction was great). Give us something that uses the system properly, 3DS, Streetpass, camera and all. We’re waiting, Nintendo. Make it happen. The clock on this system started ticking when you announced the 3DS XL.
