Remember Swapnote for the Nintendo 3DS? Unless you had a 3DS from 2011 to 2013, you probably don’t.

Swapnote was a messaging application for the 3DS that let you send customized postcards in 3D to you and your friends. Kind of like how pen pals swap letters in between each other. The game was incredibly popular until Nintendo forcefully shut down the service 3 years ago due to people abusing the system’s camera functionality to send dick pics to each other. Well now Nintendo has (poorly) decided to give us another chance with its spiritual successor, Swapdoodle!swapdoodle

Swapdoodle is incredible similar to Swapnote, but does have some tweaks and changes here and there. For starters, the app is now more focused on a more artistic aspect of drawing as there is a much more diverse set of colors and line thickness. You can also purchase drawing lessons from an in game shop using real money and learn how to draw Nintendo characters while also grabbing some pretty cool stationary also. Check out the trailer below for the full details! What do you think of this comeback? Tell us in the comments below!

A couple of weeks go we reported that Nintendo had announced that Animal Crossing and Fire Emblem would be making their way to mobile devices this fall.

When originally announced last year, Nintendo said that the only Free to Play mobile game would be Miitomo and that the rest would be fully priced apps. Well, it seems like they changed their minds. During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, DeNA executive Isao Moriyasu  confirmed that the 2 upcoming mobile titles would be free. The change isn’t completely unjustified, as Miitomo was able to reach the 10 million download mark within a little less than 2 months of being out. The app was also estimated as raking in about $280,000 per week. Are you looking forward to these apps now that they’re free, or do you think the in app purchases could ruin the experience for you now? Tell us in the comments below!

Bethesda previewed, BattleCry, their new free-to-play multi-player combat game at E3 and it looks bloody awesome! BattleCry will be a mix of melee and ranged fighting and will be a 32 player online game. It is going to be fast and fun where different kinds of players can jump in at any time.

BattleCry1

BattleCry is set in an alternate history where there is no gunpowder. Instead of going to war, countries send warriors to specific “war zones” to fight out there differences. The game developers wanted a very stylized world and were inspired by graphic novels. There is a wonderful contrast between the beauty of the environment and the brutality of the fighting. The world is also somewhat surreal to reflect the state your character is in – constantly on the verge of death.

 BattleCry3

Right now there are two warrior factions: The Royal Marines (British) and the Cossacks. There are three warrior classes within each faction: Enforcer (brute strength), Duelist (speedy and sneaky), and the Tech Archer (can play a cat and mouse game). By the launch in 2015, there will be two additional warrior classes. There are currently two supporting warrior classes as well: the Gadgeteer and the Brawler. Each class has a special ability and you can use adrenaline (which costs energy) to be essentially super human for a short period of time.

 BattleCry5

BattleCry6

There are many customizations for your character too. You can earn iron (currency) to alter your appearance and you will keep your character for each battle (no starting over every time). Eventually, you will be able to unlock both genders for all characters.

This game features an intimate 3rd person camera and you are able to move around slowly or go rather quickly. After the game ends, you can salute people who you felt played well. You get rewarded for saluting your opponents and they get recognition – it’s a win win situation.

If you are looking for a cool looking fast-paced game, then you will want to check out BattleCry!

Briefly: Disney Interactive today officially announced Star Wars: Attack Squadrons, a “free-to-play online space combat game where players customize iconic Star Wars™ ships and engage in high-velocity 16 player dogfights in fabled Star Wars locations.”

The reveal trailer doesn’t actually show off any gameplay, so we’re not entirely sure what the game looks like or how it plays, but could you imagine a 16-player Rogue Squadron style space-combat game? Wouldn’t that be incredible!

The game is currently without a release date, but you can head here to sign up for the beta. Take a look at the first trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be trying Star Wars: Attack Squadrons when it releases!

It’s April 9, 1940 and the German invasion of Norway is fully underway as the sun glares at me through my iced up windshield. My aircraft, a British Spitfire Mk.II, roars through the air while being rocked around as the deafening airblasts from the anti-aircraft flak cannons explode around my ship and curiously sync up to the brass blasts from the John Williams score titled ‘TIE Fighter Attack”*. The flak is coming from the naval destroyers that I am dangerously edging close to, so I quickly veer away from the oncoming fire towards a teammate who needs assistance. Suddenly, an enemy fighter is cornering me on my six as he closes the distance for his guns to be effective. Before he can line me up in his sights I roll hard to my right and drop my speed so I can circle around him. He anticipates this and also matches my speed. I point my nose down and plummet to the frozen trees while kicking in my afterburners and reach a tremendous amount of speed before sharply pulling up and looping over my pursuer. In his confusion he tries to also perform a loop but doesn’t have the right amount of thrust so I catch him before he can complete the maneuver and with one blast I take out his rudder. The damage is done and he spins out of control into the rock and ice. Welcome to War Thunder, a free-to-play online World War 2-era combat flight simulator that has taken over my free-time and that of thousands everywhere.
*You know the scene, when Han and Luke have to jump in the Falcon’s turrets and fend off the TIEs after escaping the Death Star. There is no Star Wars soundtrack used in the game, but listening to the score while playing is one of the best combinations I have discovered. After all, George Lucas heavily borrowed from WW2 aerial battle stock footage for his films. It’s only fitting to be played with this game during multiplayer.

My first complaint about the game is that I didn’t hear about it early enough, when it’s open beta was launched back in November 2012. I have no idea how this game eluded my radar for so long which is why I wanted to share it with any others who might have missed this gem. I’m also fascinated with WW2-era history, especially when it comes to the engineering marvels that were developed by the various powers that were fighting throughout the world at the time. I don’t believe this game would be as successful were it set in any other time and I think Gaijin Entertainment has perfectly captured the essence of what makes WW2 still one of the most infamous and captivating wars in human history.

The first thing I suggest is to complete the tutorial missions that will guide you and teach you everything you need to know. This is an extremely easy game to jump into and learn in a short time. There is no steep-learning curve but mastering the skies against other players is another thing. However, the challenge of going up against another player and making it out alive in a dog-fight is extremely enjoyable and addictively fun.

The controls are excellently well mapped and mouse users don’t have to worry about the need for a joystick. The controls feel much more realistic and responsive than say, the jets from Battlefield 3. If you prefer to use a joystick then that’s not a problem either. I haven’t tried it with a joystick yet but will update this article later on when I do so. The developers made the game in mind for many different controller types so it’s only a matter of choosing what you’re most comfortable with.

War Thunder is a visual treat. Rays of sunlight will cascade through your cockpit and fog will actually obscure your vision of a mountain that may, or may, not be in front of you. Enemy gunfire will punch holes in your aircraft’s hull or rip it to shreds. Even the aircraft, which number over a hundred, have all been painstakingly recreated from their actual real-life counterparts. The gunners that sit in the turrets and pill boxes don’t look like they were molded in clay by a five-year-old. Detail is everywhere. However, some textures on the ground noticeably stand out. Some buildings on the base are painted “flat” on the surface of the map. Mountain edges sometimes produce a strange pixelated “shimmering” effect. These are small problems in a game that is for the majority a feast for the eyes. I can’t wait to experience this game via Oculus Rift when those become available soon.

A lot of love has also gone into the sound design. Everything sounds like it was recorded from real WW2 battles. From the idle hum of each and every plane to the explosive crack of a torpedo hitting the broadside of a battleship, War Thunder brings the noise when it comes to sound effects. Now, as you can already tell, I don’t think their music choices were great selections. I like music to engage what I may be doing in the game. Bringing on a composer to write some epic dog-fighting battle music to keep me on my toes is well needed for War Thunder.

When you start you have five countries to choose from: U.S., England, Germany, Russia and Japan. Each has over forty ships to choose from with even more on the way. By participating in various missions, either single-player or online, you will accrue experience points and silver lions (game currency) for the various duties you perform in each mission. Whether you choose to solely dog-fight other players or take out the enemies ground forces you will gain experience for both your personal flight career and that of your specific country. For example, I picked England for my country so the more I use British aircraft the more options I will gain access to (purchased with silver lions) while I keep leveling. Each country’s aircraft has different weaknesses and strengths that you will need to keep an eye out for. You can take your time leveling up each country so don’t worry about what you select at the beginning. Players are also able to upgrade their planes with silver lions for better parts that become available with more use. You can also spend points on how accurate your gunners will be or how long it takes before your guns can be reloaded.

In addition to unlocking the many various aircraft, players can also unlock medals and achievements for specific tasks performed in their aircraft or for their military career. Dozens of skins and decals, of which only 4*, can be placed on your aircraft including the usual eyes and shark teeth can be placed and customized in size and angle.
*Decals are for Premium Accounts

Physics play a big role in this game. Just as if I were in a real aircraft, G-Forces brought upon by the sudden turning at such fast speeds can possibly cause your pilot, and even your crew, to black out and lose control of the aircraft. If your crew blacks out then you won’t have a gunner to defend your ass. Specifically firing on certain parts of an enemy fighter might just punch some holes in the fuel tank, meaning they will have to land to enact repairs if they can survive your encounter. Remain too low while you drop your bombs and you too might get caught in the surrounding blast. This realism is a masterful combination with the already rich, life-like graphics.

Multiplayer

Players can team up with 3 other friends in a squad to assist each other in multiplayer or co-op games. Servers can support up to 32 players (16 on each side.)

There are 3 separate modes that players can choose from to change how their match will play.

Arcade Mode: A much more simplified flight control scheme. The location and the aircraft selection are not tied to historical events. Players on either side can choose aircraft from any country.

Historical: Players must only choose aircraft of the corresponding side they are on. If you’re playing The Battle of Britain and are on the British side then you can only select British aircraft. Also, aircraft behave realistically, ex: If you’re flying too fast you risk your wings being ripped off.

Full Real Battles: You must begin the Full Real Battles Tutorial before playing this mode. Missions are very long, no 3rd person, aircraft begin on ground with engines off, flight dynamics are also more extreme and there are no markers or mouse aim. You must use a joystick.

Once you select the mode you can then select the mission type of which there are 3.

Operations: Defeat all ground forces. Can be played in Historical Mode only.

Domination: Capture and hold all airfields.

Ground Strike: Simplified version of Operations for Arcade Mode only.

There are currently 17 maps, including: Attack on Pearl Harbor, Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Peleliu, and the developers intend to include even more locations in future patches. They are well-detailed, sprawling maps that appear to accurately portray the landscape for each corresponding location. The maps will also make you think about what kind of armament you might want to put on your aircraft. Some maps are based on naval battles so you will want to outfit your aircraft to be able to carry torpedoes (if available.)

War Thunder is best played with buddies over a voice chat program. Coordinating with your squad will definitely give you a much needed edge in battle against opposing forces. Having two players fly as bombers while two other players fly in fighters to intercept enemies who go after the bombers is a useful tactic. Experienced teams can decimate opposing enemy bases in a short amount of time. Every multiplayer match feels unique and never feels repetitive.
Gaijin Entertainment is going all in with War Thunder and even has plans to introduce player controlled land and naval units in future releases. War Thunder is available on PC through Steam and will also be released for the Playstation 4 later this year.

We know you’re interested. Head to War Thunder‘s official website, and download the game now! War Thunder scores a worthy 4/5.

Briefly: Back at SDCC, we got a great first-hand look at Microsoft’s upcoming Xbox One / Windows 8 world creator, Project Spark.

Last night, Microsoft Studios streamed a fantastic 40+ minute preview of the Windows 8 build of the title, showcasing plenty of the amazing things that are possible within the world of Project Spark.

Take a look at the video below, and let us know if you’ll be grabbing the free-to-play game when it releases later this year!

Watch live video from project_spark on TwitchTV

Believe me when I say Project Spark is unlike any game that has come before. There’s no easy way of describing it other than in this game, you will have full control to build a world with your own rules, own gameplay mechanics, and own enemies. Developed by an internal studio at Microsoft, this “open world digital canvas” is currently two years in the making and is in the beta process. More on that later.

ps4

The first thing shown to me were the basic set of tools used to form the terrain inside ones world. Creators will be able to adjust the scales, intensity, and distortion of hills, mountains, craters, whatever you’re building with. Next, I was shown a Logic Menu. In this menu, you will be able to design the “brain” of an object or creature. It’s a simplified menu in which you can change two columns in order for something to happen. For example, when you enter the brain of a troll, you will see _____ happens when _____. Those two blanks cane be filled win with “defend” and “attacked” respectively. Keep in mind, you can use this tool to make enemies do goofy things or make them much harder to fight.

ps3

Gamers will also be able to give their creations meaning. In Project Spark, you can create a hero, a purpose, and the journey complete with quests. And yes, you can customize the dialogue for your journey too. If you’re not that into micromanaging everything, gamers will also have the ability to auto-create worlds so that you don’t have to. While it is auto-generated, the environment pieces will always be random. Once you’re all done, you can upload it for other gamers to download and play though your creation. This in turn will allow anyone who downloads your game to change it to their liking. But don’t worry, you’ll still retain first ownership no matter what they do to it.

ps5

While the game appears to be always in 3rd person, gamers will able to create their own games in first person, third person, and even create a sidescroller adventure. When you download a sidescrolling adventure, you’ll be able to change the point of view to first person. Perhaps the most interesting thing I saw running in Project Spark was Geometry Wars made using the tools available in Project Spark.

ps2

SmartGlass will be integrated into Project Spark in the form of a second screen. The SmartGlass app will allow gamers to have the ability to render live gameplay and play it off the Xbox One. This eliminates the use of a controller and you’ll be able to terraform your world with your fingers.

ps6

Project Spark will be free-to-play on Windows 8 devices, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Anything created on the Xbox One will be available on the Xbox 360 and Windows 8 devices. However, in order to play online, gamers will need Xbox Live Gold. DLC wasn’t talked about, but the inclusion of purchasable items such as clothing, enemies, and pieces of the environment were hinted at.

As for the beta, you can find more information here!

A new trailer for the next game to come out of Crytek has surfaced, and it isn’t another Crysis. Warface is a “Social FPS”, that looks DAMN good. This ain’t no Facebook game. Lets watch the trailer and delve deeper.

You get all that? In a nutshell Warface is a Free to Play “Social FPS”. The cool part is it’s delivery method. Crytek have their own social network called Gface which this game will be released through. It is a browser based game platform that allows players to drop in and drop out on the fly in any of their games.

Warface is using the CryEngine 3 which means it will be scalable over pretty much any modern PC. So what can you expect from Warface in terms of gameplay? Well not much has been released but what they have said is pretty intriguing. There will be monthly PVE “coop” events where players can team up and go against the AI. There will also be classic PVP matches where teams can duke it out deathmatch style.

So, you’re asking what the gameplay looks like? Well take a gander at this other trailer that features in game footage!

It looks so rad! It’s like Rainbow 6, Battlefield and CoD had a love baby and Crysis was the surrogate. Prices for the game itself haven’t been released, if there is any, and the inevitable premium portions have not been hinted at all yet.

So when we get more information for you on this epic looking browsers based game, we will be sure to keep you up to date!

THAAATS RIIIGHT! The hyper stylized team based shooter goes free to play! Straight from the press release:

The Bats and Jokerz are running free! Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the PC version of Gotham City Impostors is now FreeTo Play.  The latest version of the game is now available for download at no cost via Steam® and is Steamworks enabled.
Those who download the Gotham City Impostors Free To Play via the Steam client will have access to the original game, as well as all DLC packs, which includes new maps, weapons, mascots and more. Players will also experience join-in-progress matchmaking that ensures gamers are placed into populated matches.

In case you’ve been living under a rock, Gotham City Impostors is a team based shooter that pits two teams of “impostors” against each other. One side is a group of vigilante copy cats, The Bats while the other is a team of Jokerz looking to rob the city. It is insanely fun and funny as hell, Monolith really put all the right people on this game.

One of the coolest features of GCI is the vertical gameplay. Maps have multiple levels and it forces players to look up and down more.

Unconfirmed reports are that people who bought the game will get exclusive in game items. Some people have said they noticed a new DLC that is not for sale and imagine that it is for gamers who have bought the game.

Regardless you now have no excuse to NOT play this crazy fun game. For more info check out the official site HERE and why not, take a peak at the trailer below.

Yesterday Sega announced it’s final pricing scheme for PSO F2P.  The classic groundbreaking console MMO is going to a free to play/freemium model with PC shipping this Summer, smartphone version this Winter and finally the PSVita version coming out in Spring of 2013.

The game offers classic PSO gameplay spread over the different platforms. PC and VITA will be fully crossplatform while the iOS and Android version will just share data, what that specifically means I do not know.

A closed beta test begins at the end of April, which Sega hopes to have pushed out to 100,000 players. This will test their servers and their transaction system for premium items.

Color me excited as I have FOND memories of playing PSO way back on the Dreamcast and actually putting my Gamecube Broadband Adapter to use. See everyone online this Summer.

If you want to sign-up for the beta, and can read Japanese check out their site HERE.
