It’s become commonplace for games to get remade or remastered within only a few years after its initial release. Part of the reason why Nintendo’s announcement that The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening was getting a full remake for the Switch was so surprising was that we rarely get updated versions of games that could actually use it. As the second remake of the game following 1998’s Link’s Awakening DX for the Game Boy Color, this version would have to stand out even further. Seeing the carefree, cartoony art style in a trailer was a step in the right direction, but being able to experience it first hand at E3 showed that sometimes, you don’t need to fix what was never broken.

Allowing for 15 minutes of unrestricted game play from the start of the adventure, this remake stays true to its original concept. Link is shipwrecked and washes up on an unknown island. After being rescued by Marin, a young girl who happened across the shoreline when Link washed up, the Hero of Time gets swept up in the mysteries of the island as he searches for a way home. That’s about all the structure the player gets, since the game throws you into the adventure headfirst and expects you to find your way through exploration.

Link has lost all of his equipment in the ocean, so it takes some time to find his sword and shield. Once he does though, it becomes the classic Zelda experience we’ve come to love for decades. Attacking enemies, cutting grass and experimenting with new equipment leads to a sometimes frustrating, but always rewarding process of finding ways to progress towards your next destination. When it’s time for a break from all the combat, the village hosts some mini games that reward Link with valuable items, some of which are necessary to advance the plot. And if you’re like me and suck at the games, leading to dozens of lost rupees as you try and fail to win one of these games, more money is only a few grass patches away.

New to this version of Link’s Awakening is a constantly scrolling camera. Past Zelda games operated on a grid based system, where the camera would move in sections as Link moved from one end of the screen to another. Now, much like Animal Crossing started doing with Wild World, the perspective stays on Link regardless of where he is on the map. While it wasn’t featured in the demo, Nintendo also showed off another new feature in the form of the map creator. This gives adventurers a chance to build their own challenges to take on themselves or to share with friends, creating numerous possibilities for when the main game is completed.

For fans of the original, rest assured that this new take on Link’s Awakening is on the right track. Acting as an updated, yet faithful recreation of the handheld classic with vibrant visuals and new surprises, this game is sure to be close to the top of any retro fan’s list for 2019. Get reacquainted with Koholint Island on September 20.

We return to the Twilight Realm in the second volume of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess by Akira Himekawa, published by VIZ Media. I loved the first volume and was very excited to get my paws on this one. Volume One left off at a pivotal point in the game, Link’s transformation into a wolf, and I wanted to see what happened next.

I think those who have beaten the game that the manga was based on will appreciate the different points of view the manga offers. We get to see certain parts of the story from Zelda’s, Midna’s, and even Ilia’s perspectives. And I know that I have said this in my previous review but I love that Link talks! Through his dialogue, we see more into his backstory and personality. Gamers are used to Link being a silent protagonist and I found this change to be refreshing.

The plot in this volume moves at a steady pace. My single complaint with the previous book was that it took a while to get going, plot-wise. This is no longer an issue, thankfully.

Beyond the intriguing story, Twilight Princess excels at its action scenes. It feels like you are playing out a battle in a game. I found myself holding my breath during Link’s fight with Diababa towards the end of the volume!

I can tell that that a lot of care was put into this series’ art. Every page oozes with detail, especially in the backgrounds and character’s clothing. The shading also does a great job of highlighting the contrast between Hyrule and the shadowy Twilight Realm.

I am pleased to say that Volume Two of Twilight Princess continues to impress. The art suited the mood perfectly and the story kept me hooked. Like its predecessor, I give The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess Volume Two a 5 out of 5. I can’t wait for the story to continue in volume three!

Love for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is still alive and well, as it should be. And ThinkGeek is ensuring that gamers can show their fandom in the real world, too. The store recently added not one, not two, but three new items themed to the title. Let’s take a look at what you can spend your hard-earned rupees on!

The first item is the Sheikah Slate Sketchbook, modeled after the Sheikah Slate found in the game. Open this sucker up to find 100 blank sheets of paper (with perforated edges) just waiting to be filled during your adventures. Not only is this item functional but it makes the perfect cosplay item (and con-season is right around the corner)! The Sheikah Slate Sketchbook costs $29.99 and is in-stock and ready to ship.

Next up is Breath of the Wild Shield Backpack, also shown in the header image. Priced at $59.99, this super-cool accessory is modeled after Link’s Traveler’s Shield. Like the sketchbook, this has great cosplay prop potential. Unzip this sucker to reveal  pockets galore – three open ones and one with a zipper closure. Another cool detail that fans will appreciate Sheikah’s Eye symbol printed on the inside of the backpack. It also features a built-in padded laptop/tablet sleeve that fits devices up to 10 and a half inches wide by one an a half inches deep by 12 and a half inches tall (although it could potentially go up to 14 inches tall, if you left top closure of the sleeve undone).

The final item is the Breath of the Wild oil canvas. This work of gaming art costs $249.99 and measures 30 inches by 60 inches. It is limited in edition to 600 pieces (you can see which number you got in the lower-left of your canvas). If you have the space and the money, this is cool way to show off your fandom while also giving you a chance to enjoy a sweeping Hylian vista anytime you wish.

Do any of these items catch your fancy?

Earlier today Nintendo finally released new info on what we can expect to see from the first batch of DLC heading to Breath of the Wild.

The first new bit of info is the new challenge arena now called Trial of the Sword. It works the same as the cave of shadows from Twilight Princess HD.  Clear all 45 rooms, and the Master Sword will unlock its hidden potential. Also new is hard mode and hero’s path. Hard mode upgrades enemies by making them spot link more easily and giving them regenerating health if you’re taking too long in battle.  It will also include new chests that you can only get by shooting them out of the sky. Hero’s path is a new map feature that allows the player to look at where Link has traveled on the map in the past 200 hours, letting them know where they’ve been and what places they should explore.

Also new is the travel medallion which link can place anywhere to use as a custom fast travel location. Nintendo has also announced that new costumes and armor based off of Tingle, Midna, Majoras Mask, and more will be added to the game as well. While Nintendo provided no info on the DLC’s release or any hint at the 2nd pack, they did give fans a nice surprise.

Remember how everyone wanted to play Breath of the Wild with dual audio, but Nintendo didn’t want to budge on it, well now you can. As of RIGHT NOW you can download a patch for the game that allows you to play in about 6 different languages, including japanese. So if you’re a monster and hate british Zelda, now you can rid here from this cruel earth. (Editor Note: You are not an actual monster if you dislike british Zelda.) Are you excited for this DLC now? Do you think it’s worth the $20 asking price? Tell us in the comments below!

I know many of you are up to your pointy ears immersing yourselves in the world of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild but even when you take a breather, you can still stay connected to the history of the series with VIZ Media’s new manga, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess by Akira Himekawa. The first volume hit shelves March 14 but Geekscape was fortunate to get an early copy.

Truth be told, I never got very far in this entry in the series when it was on consoles (and what I did experience, I don’t really remember) so I was extra-excited to finally progress through the story. And what a story it is! If you played the game in either its Gamecube, Wii, or Wii U forms than the overall plot should be familiar but, guys, Link talks in the manga! That alone should be a reason to at least give it a look.

If you are like me and did not experience the story prior to the manga, here is a brief run-down. The story opens on a mysterious kingdom, The Twilight Realm, and its ruler, the Twilight Princess Midna. After a cruel betrayal by the old Twilight Realm king’s advisor, Zant, the scene switches over to Link, who leads a peaceful life in the idyllic Ordon Village. A good portion of the first volume is dedicated to Link’s interactions with Ordon Village’s residents and does a great job of fleshing out Link as a character. The world of the Twilight Realm and that of Ordon Village only start to clash near the end of volume one.

TM & © 2017 Nintendo. ZELDA NO DENSETSU TWILIGHT PRINCESS © 2016 Akira HIMEKAWA/SHOGAKUKAN

The art is drawn beautifully. I liked how the Twilight Realm had a lot of dark tones and shading while scenes in Ordon Village had a lighter palate. It helped set a contrast between the two locales. The art style is more realistic than previous Zelda manga which had a more cartoon-y vibe. Some of the monsters were a bit on the freaky side and there is graphic violence included (it isn’t awful but more than I was anticipating). I can see why this was rated “T for Teen.”

The one gripe that I can see some people having with this one is the pacing. If you were looking for an intense, action-heavy first volume, you find yourself slightly disappointed. There is plenty of action at the end but it isn’t consistent throughout. It personally didn’t bother me. It actually made it feel more like a video game somehow, with a slow build to the character heeding the call to be a hero.

I loved this first volume of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and bestow unto it a 5 out of 5. If the rest of the manga is anything like this first book, I would say we have a real winner on our hands. Gamers and fantasy fans alike will find an thoroughly engrossing story and one that I look forward to continuing.

[This review is based on a sample provided by the publisher. All opinions are my own.]

Briefly: If you’re like pretty much everyone else on the planet, you can’t freaking get enough of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

I’ve barely scratched the surface of the game itself, and I’ve already been ignoring some of my other duties (including sleep) just so that I can clear one. more. shrine. It’s about to re-ignite my dormant Amiibo obsession, and my other Nintendo Switch games have been all but ignored up to this point.

Nintendo has taken to twitter this morning to reveal a three-part making of series that’s set to debut tomorrow morning at 6AM Pacific time. The teaser posted today features some of the game’s breathtaking soundtrack, showcases some slick concept art, and more.

We’ll be watching, will you? How have you been enjoying the Switch and Breath of the Wild so far?

If you’ve got a cool 90 minutes to kill, you can also take a look this beyond-interesting BotW panel from this year’s GDC:

For those of us hyped to get our hands on anything Breath of the Wild-related, Good Smile Company has answered our call with their Nendoroid Link: Breath of the Wild Version figure. Good Smile Company are the same people behind other lovely Legend of Zelda figures, such as figma Link: Link Between Worlds Version and Nendoroid Link: Majora’s Mask Version, and they certainly have mastered the art of capturing the characters’ essence.

Like the previous figma for A Link Between Worlds, there are two different editions of this Nendoroid to choose from: Standard and DX. The Standard Edition, priced at ¥4,167 before tax, comes with the smaller amount of accessories. For that price, you will get Link’s bow and arrow, quiver, sword, sheath, shield, plus the new Shiekah Slate, pictured below. Also included are two interchangeable facial expressions for Link, a smiling one and a yelling one.

The DX Edition, priced at ¥5,370, has everything from the standard plus an axe, a chicken leg, a club, a hood piece for Link’s head, and most impressive of all, a horse (Epona?). If you can afford it, I would totally splurge on the DX addition.

Nendoroid Link: Breath of the Wild Version is available to pre-order at the Good Smile Online Store (Standard, DX), scheduled to release in June 2017. These figures can also be found on sites like AmiAmi, HobbyLink Japan, and Tokyo Otaku Mode.

This is pretty out of left field.

Earlier this morning, Nintendo announced a partnership between them and the company Scrap to create an escape room based off of The Legend of Zelda. The escape room will be titled Defenders of the Triforce and looks to be mostly inspired by Ocarina of Time. Players will get the chance to interact with familiar characters, and also get the chance to use many of the items from the game series (Come on Tingle Tuner!). The tour begins January 31st and will tour a number of cities such as San Fransisco, L.A, Phoenix, San Diego, and more! Tickets can be found here if they’re not already sold out. Are you excited for this escape room? Are you planning on going? Tell us in the comments below!

October always means a busy month for gaming, with the holiday release schedule being in full swing. With so many hard hitting games, Rumble seems to be a fitting theme for the month. To celebrate the release of Titanfall 2, as well as paying tribute to some other great games from past to present, Loot Gaming has some surprising items to reward our fandom. Without further ado, here’s what we’ve got!

img_5557

Starting with two original items for the Rumble crate, a pin commemorating the month shows two boxing gloves clashing with “October 2016” being engraved at the bottom and “Rumble” at the top. The included poster sets the scene for a futuristic battle, while the back details all the goods that have arrived for the month.

Prepare for Titanfall. Titanfall 2 is the major new release being focused on this month with a new T-Shirt featuring the silhouette of a Titan and its pilot. Simple, but recognizable enough thanks to the iconic mech in the background, we’ve found out shirt of choice when its time to hit the battlefield.

img_5558

Taking a more villainous turn for our other clothing options for the month, we’ve got not one, but TWO accessories that will surely keep us warm with the fires of hatred they both exude. First, Dr. Eggman may not be able to defeat the world’s fastest hedgehog, but at least his hands will be nice and cozy with these Game Over gloves. These are great, but the biggest surprise of the crate came from the pair of Toon Ganondorf socks courtesy of Bioworld. Wind Waker is my favorite iteration of The Legend of Zelda, so full length Ganon socks would be something I’d buy on their own. Knowing that, my enthusiasm when I saw these resting in the box went through the roof. All it’s missing is a slot in the forehead.

Going from a pair of classic villains to one that’s captured the hearts of our meme filled modern times, Reaper from Overwatch arrived as an adorable Funko Pop figure! I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the brand, mostly because the vast majority look identical. This is why when one comes along that has extra detail, it catches my attention even more. Reaper is one of these cases, with a unique mask and well crafted shotguns that look like they could be straight out of a Play of the Game, it’s close as to whether this or the Ganonforf socks win best item for the month.

img_5559

What easily wins the prize for the strangest item this month is this box of Pac-Man adhesive bandages. Wondering why one would ever need these outside of the inevitable moment when a giant yellow ball eats your finger, the back of the poster made everything clear. This month, if you show off your rumble wounds by getting creative with your bandages, you’ll have a chance to win a Wii U and a copy of Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. With the console ceasing production this week, you might want to jump on the chance to win it, especially because Pac-Man himself is in it!

img_5564

To round out the line up, we can’t talk about retro heroes or Smash Bros without mentioning Mario. Now the plumber can go wherever you want with this Mario magnet. When you want to be greeted when rummaging the fridge for mushrooms or have his smile to look forward to when stepping into the car for the day, you’ll never have to go without the savior of the Mushroom Kingdom.

That’s a wrap for October! What are your thoughts on this month’s Loot Gaming offerings? As always, share your thoughts below, and make sure to use “Geekscape” as your promotional code for a discount!

Nintendo is going all in with the 30th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. To get gamers up to speed on all of Link’s adventures, the company announced that the latest mainline Zelda title, the Wii’s Skyward Sword, is now available to purchase in the Wii U eShop.

Set as the earliest game in the notoriously confusing timeline, Skyward Sword took us to Skyloft back when it released in 2011. Trading in his horse for a Loftwing, Link flew through the skies to take on a threat that would set the entire saga into motion, creating what would become the kingdom of Hyrule. Somewhat infamous for Nintendo’s decision to make the game completely motion controlled, AND requiring Wii Motion Plus technology, (which when released, had been built in to new Wii Remotes for some time), it’s gone on to be one of the most polarizing entries in the core series of games.

Now, more people will get the chance to decide for themselves with this surprise release. Retailing for $19.99, Skyward Sword is the last of the 3D Zelda games to get some sort of re-release, with Majora’s Mask and Twilight Princess rounding out the list over the last year. Now there’s no excuse to enjoy the full timeline before Breath of the Wild launches early next year!

What are your thoughts on Skyward Sword? Let us know in the comments, and keep checking back for more details on all things Zelda, including those sweet new Amiibo!

Before this morning’s Nintendo Direct, we thought the only Amiibo news we would have to look forward to in the coming months was the release of the fantastic looking Breath of the Wild figurines we told you about at E3. Now, we’re feeling that old Amiibo Hunter call as Nintendo announced four classic Legend of Zelda Amiibo, taking us from the series’ beginnings, to the toon shaded variants from The Wind Waker.

Featuring an 8-bit version of Link modeled after his NES debut, a new Ocraina of Time version with the Hero of Time playing his titular instrument in a pose that looks like it’s ripped straight from the game’s timeless artwork, and the debut of Toon Zelda alongside the baton wielding Toon Link in a new double pack, each figure will function like their standard counterparts across their compatible games. In addition, each one was teased to have compatibility with Breath of the Wild, but in what ways was not yet specified.

I have to say that I absolutely love that Toon Zelda is getting the Amiibo treatment, and with Wind Waker being my favorite game in the series, I’ll always welcome more toys to throw my money at. Admittedly though, the Ocarina of Time variant is my favorite of the bunch, which looks gorgeous in the released images. The Ocarina doesn’t get enough love, so seeing it represented here just feels special, especially when I imagine how nice it would look on that Master Sword stand! My only complaint? If we’re getting three new Link’s and a new Zelda, this would have been a perfect time for a Toon Ganondorf release! Oh well, we’ll take what we can get.

What are your thoughts on the new Amiibo reveals, or on the Direct as a whole? Sound off in the comments and let us know!

As anyone who has been caught up in the Amiibo craze can tell you, after spending a small fortune on all the Nintendo themed figurines, it becomes hard to store all of them. If you were hoping for some kind of relief, that was squashed the second the company decided to announce new Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda figures coming out in 2016 and beyond. With this in mind, PDP had some really cool stands on display that will let you take your fandom to the next level.

First, the Spinning Fire Bar Display reminds us of some of our most frustrating moments from the NES days with 30 years of nostalgia to make us remember it fondly. With an actual spinning plastic flame in front of your Amiibo of choice, it’s a pretty great way of making your villainous characters seem all the more intimidating. The Fire Bar Display retails for $14.99.

E3 2016 PDP Amiibo Fire Bar

Then again, I don’t know anyone who only has one Amiibo, which is why the Donkey Kong Display will be able to hold as many as you can squeeze under your roof. Modeled after the 1981 arcade classic, the standard package holds up to nine figures, with three on each row of scaffolding held above each other with sets of ladders. When asked, PDP confirmed that you’ll be able to buy multiple sets and stack them even higher. Do you think my landlord would be okay with raising the ceiling a couple of feet? The Donkey Kong Display will release at a $19.99 price point.

Amiibo collecting isn’t all about Mario though, which is why a new Master Sword Stylus Display was revealed alongside the rest of this impressive lineup. Perhaps the most exciting product of the bunch, this stand serves both as a great way to display your favorite amiibo, while giving you an envy inducing stylus to use with your 3DS. If that wasn’t enough of a reason to get excited, the display makes a pulling sound when you take the Master Sword out, while an insertion sound effect plays when it’s put back in. Obviously designed to go with the Legend of Zelda line of figures, you can technically use them with any amiibo you want, finally giving us a glimpse of what Callie or Marie might look like as Heroes of Time. Like the Spinning Fire Bar, this stand will be $14.99.

Rounding out PDP’s Nintendo related products are some non-amiibo goods, which feature two familiar franchises. First, the Pop N Display Question Block mimics the in game blocks their modeled after by housing our most prized possessions, which in this case, is our 3DS games! Folding out to hold ten at a time, I would love to bring this with me when I’m out so I can show off my Mario fandom while not having to scramble to find all my games. Just don’t be an idiot like me and leave it somewhere! That’s a lot of stuff to lose at once that could send you into a downward spiral. The Pop N Display Question Block will cost you $9.99.

Lastly, if you want to protect both your games AND your handheld, Toon Link has us covered with the Legend of Zelda Slim Storage Armor. This green New 3DS XL case displays the Wind Waker protagonist in the heat of battle, keeping our handheld safe from drops and scratches. The armor has an extra compartment to hold three games, two standard sized styluses and a cleaning charm, the latter of which also comes with the package. Setting us back $14.99, it’s a small price to pay to shield ourselves from our own clumsiness.

All of the above products are releasing in August. Which ones are you looking forward to the most? Sound off in the comments, and keep checking back for more news from the E3 show floor!

Nintendo took a huge gamble by making their entire E3 2016 lineup consist of one game, even if that game is as big as the next game in the Legend of Zelda series. Yet, if there was any doubt as to whether or not that risk would pay off, all of it vanished as soon as the trailer for the officially named Breath of the Wild graced thousands of screens around the world. I mean, Link hunting? Link cooking? Link setting fires to an open field, that was only a fraction of what seemed like miles of forest to explore? From how different the game looked while somehow looking so familiar at the same time, it truly looked like something that needed to be played to have a full grasp on what this was. Luckily, we got to find out for ourselves after we braved the insane lines on the E3 show floor to discover that Link’s next adventure maintains its spirit in the midst of such fundamental change.

E3 2016 Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Screen 2

Playing through the first half hour of what will be the final game, I was most relieved by the fact that the game just starts! Ditching the long, excitement killing opening village sections that have become progressively more of a drag as the games went on, Breath of the Wild throws you right into the action after a short cutscene, where Link is seemingly awoken from a long slumber to save Hyrule once again. Once you find a few boxes that contain the tattered rags that serve as your starting outfit, stepping out of the cave and approaching a cliff that shows off the incredible view of our new Hyrule is the perfect way to give you an idea of how much you’ll get to explore right off the bat.

From that point forward, the world is yours to do what you want to do in. This insane amount of freedom somehow manages to keep from being overwhelming thanks to the constant rewards you find throughout your explorations. The map, both on the mini map or on the full map found on Link’s multipurpose stone tablet, the Sheikah Slate, make it abundantly clear where you’re supposed to go to advance the story, whereas any discoveries you make that can’t be resolved at that point in time can be labeled with over half a dozen stamps to serve as reminders. This is good news for those who just want to run around, since there will be so much to find throughout the enormous map. In the first 10 minutes of my time with the game, I managed to meet a mysterious old man who pointed me in the direction of my first temple, found a hidden water sprite while diving into the water, (and was rewarded with a rare item as a result,) hunted wild boar for cooking materials, found a rusted sword at the top of a stone tower, and gathered plenty of wood for future cooking.

E3 2016 Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Screen 1

Eventually, it was time to buckle down and continue with the quest at hand. Once I followed the directions provided, I found an area that had a slot for the Sheikah Slate to be plugged into. Once placed, a giant tower rose from the ground, carrying Link up with it. Triggering this tower was a major key towards quelling the evil power that has engulfed Hyrule Castle in the distance, serving as one of many that needed to be discovered throughout the adventure to uncover the strength Link needs to have a fighting chance. In my excitement, I dove off of the tower, only to learn that this game is much more unforgiving than previous versions. If you were used to being able to just roll through a large fall, you’ll be in for a big surprise when your hearts empty out. Too bad the old man from before was holding on to that snazzy glider from the original trailer. He offered to exchange it for an item found in a dangerous cave, but my time came to a close before I could find it. Knowing that this demo was only a fraction of what the full map will look like is hard to imagine, especially since it seems like it would take hours just to explore what we were given.

Yes, it’s true that Breath of the Wild is wildly different from its predecessors, which is obvious from the moment the game starts. Wielding a variety of weapons such as clubs and axes instead of swords and shields, all of which can break if overused, having custom outfits that need to be changed depending on the climate, having cooking and eating being the only way to recover health, items like bombs now acting as runes, which can be used an unlimited amount of times, and enemy camps scattered throughout the field with varying enemy difficulty are just some of the most obvious examples of the new direction the game is going in. But its biggest strength is how none of the Zelda style is lost, even with such fundamental changes. All of the features I’ve mentioned feels like you would expect a Zelda game to feel, to the point where all of this feels instantly familiar despite being so different. This is helped by familiar elements making the jump to the next game, like the fully orchestrated versions of its classic music, abundant amounts puzzles and treasure chests, and the return of Skyward Sword‘s stamina meter, which is now used for manual jumping and climbing as well as sprinting.

E3 2016 Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Screen 4

So for every horse jacking, slow motion arrow shot or meal cooked, this is still the same Zelda we’ve fallen in love with all these years. And we wouldn’t have it any other way. Despite some consistent slowdown when the camera is centered on the full environment, (which is often,) Breath of the Wild has quickly jumped to the top of my most anticipated game list, especially when it will also be on the presumably more powerful NX. What are your thoughts on what you’ve seen so far? Share them in the comments, as well as the rest of your E3 highlights as we press on with our coverage from the show floor.

Another Legend of Zelda is a welcomed addition to a storied franchise. We all have our stories of how the Legend of Zelda franchise has touched our hearts, shaped our lives, and stood as a crutch when we needed one. So when Nintendo announces another iteration of the game, we all listen.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild

The trailer showed off beautiful landscapes and new activities players can engage in. Honestly, it was a blend of Nintendo flexing their console power, and their unique, artistic vision of one of their main exclusives.

The game breaks with some conventions from the series. For example, many of the minor enemies are no longer scattered randomly around the world, as many now live together in colonies. Link can climb towers and massive structures to get a bearing on his surroundings. He can even reach the top of mountains – any mountain he can see, he can climb. He can paraglide to lower areas or even use his shield to slide down a mountain. Link will travel across fields, through forests and to mountain peaks.

The game’s wild world surrounds Link, and he must pay attention to changes in climate, as a shift in weather or temperature can affect the environment and his ability to survive in it. A sudden downpour might douse a roaring campfire or a lightning storm might be attracted to Link’s metallic weapons. Players might need to bundle up with warmer clothes or change into something better suited to the desert heat.

More than 100 Shrines of Trials dot the landscape, waiting for players to discover and explore them in any order they want. As players work their way through the traps and puzzles inside, they’ll earn special items and other rewards that will help them on their adventure. Puzzles in the game often have multiple answers, and secrets can be found everywhere. Exploration and discovery are a huge part of the fun.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both the Wii U console and Nintendo’s next system, code-named NX, in 2017. The game also includes compatibility with amiibo, which are sold separately. Nintendo announced a new series of amiibo figures specific to the game that includes Link with a bow (“Archer”), Link on horseback (“Rider”), and a “Guardian” that is the first amiibo with flexible parts. The existing Wolf Link amiibo works with the game as well: When players tap a Wolf Link amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller, Wolf Link will attack enemies on his own and help players to hunt. He has three hearts, unless players carry over save data from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Wolf Link disappears when his hearts run out. Details can be found at http://e3.nintendo.com/amiibo/

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set to release next year for the Wii U and NX.

Usually, companies will try to keep their cards close to their chests right before a big E3 presentation. Apparently, Amazon had other plans when it came to Nintendo’s upcoming Legend of Zelda title for the Wii U and NX.

The image shows Link climbing a cliff with an expansive kingdom visible in the background. Based on the artwork itself, it’s clear that the focus seems to be exploration, while also showing off how big Hyrule might be this time around. With constant rumors swirling that this next entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series will take Link through a Skyrim inspired open world version of Hyrule, it would explain why this image sets the tone that it does.

With only a day away before Nintendo tips its hand to the public regarding their next big title, that gives us plenty of time to speculate until then. What conclusions do you draw after seeing this image, and what do you hope to see when the game finally releases early next year? Comment below and share your thoughts, and make sure to check back with us for our full impressions on the show floor!

Have you ever been playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and felt like you wanted to try your hand at your own baton skills? Now’s your chance, since the replica ind Waker Baton that is being used during the Symphony of the Goddess: Master Quest 2016-2017 symphony tour has gone up for pre-order.

Available this June for $40, the baton feels like a must own for someone like me, who holds The Wind Waker in the highest esteem. Articulated to look as close as possible to the game’s version outside of it being cell shaded, it won’t be long until we can control the direction of the winds, allowing ourselves to sail to our heart’s content… Or at least you can try. As of press time, we have yet to confirm that it will actually control the wind.

Legend of Zelda Wind Waker Baton

The baton has been released to celebrate the 2016-2017 Master Quest tour, which kicked off in Santiago, Chile this weekend. Promising updated visuals to show off the recently released Twilight Princess HD, you can check out the entire list of dates and locations at the symphony’s web site. While you’re at it, you can claim your baton by pre-ordering it here!

Briefly: Of course, you already knew the plot of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess…

In any case, Nintendo has just debuted a new trailer, which details the game’s epic plot, while showing off just how slick the title looks in its new HD rendition.

As much flak as Twilight Princess received when it first released, it remains one of my favourite The Legend of Zelda titles to date, and I can’t wait to put the Wii U version on my shelf.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD hits stores on March 4th! Take a look at the new trailer below, read up on the game’s Amiibo functionality here, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited to replay the celebrated title!

Briefly: I nearly forgot that we’re just two months away from replaying this fantastic title.

Nintendo has just debuted a new trailer showing off the fairly extensive Amiibo functionality supported by the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD.

The physical version of the game, of course, comes packaged with the Wolf Link and Midna figure, which will open up the ‘Cave of Shadow’ challenge area in the game, which sounds like a fun distraction if you’re simply looking to tear up some baddies.

Other, Legend of Zelda Amiibo offer up different functionality as well. Link and Toon Link will refill your arrows, Zelda and Sheik figures will restore your hearts, and the Ganondorf figure, naturally, will make your experience tougher by making Link take more damage when hit.

Sounds fun, doesn’t it? Are you looking forward to the Twilight Princess HD release? The title will release on March 4th!

It is a good time to be a Legend of Zelda collector. First, there was the news of GameStop carrying Nendoroid Link Majora’s Mask ver. Now, pre-orders are open for Good Smile Company’s figma Link: A Link Between Worlds ver., available in both standard and DX editions.

This figma stands approximately 110 millimeters in height. The figure is able to be posed in many different positions and is packaged with a stand. Link is also able to switch out facial expressions and comes with a smiling face as well as a serious one. Both editions include the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and an illustrated sheet of Link when he is merged to a wall.

If all that is enough for you, you should be just fine with the Standard edition. But who wouldn’t want more Legend of Zelda goodness? That is where the DX edition comes in. The DX edition not only includes everything from the Standard edition but also packs in the Tornado Rod, Hookshot, a Bomb, a Baby Maiaimai (so cute!), a rupee, and a pot. Before you ask: no, you cannot smash the pot.

You can pre-order these figures now at the Good Smile Company online store. The Standard edition costs ¥5,000 while the DX edition will set you back ¥6,000. Keep in mind that orders are limited and will close on February 3 at 9p.m. Japan time. They are scheduled to release this August.

One of the most surprising announcements in recent memory was Hyrule Warriors, the first team up between Nintendo, Tecmo, and Team Ninja since the polarizing Metroid: Other M. Placing Link and the Zelda universe into the game play of the long running Dynasty Warriors franchise seemed crazy enough to work, which is only reinforced by the newest gameplay trailer.

As with Dynasty Warriors, there are sure to be a variety of playable characters to tear through the battlefield with. While Link and Impa were shown in previous screenshots and videos, it was a big surprise to not only see Zelda, but Twilight Princess’ own Midna getting their own chances to shine as playable warriors as well. Based on the trailer, Zelda uses her wisdom to destroy foes with her powerful magic while Midna rides her wolf into battle, (which may or may not be Link this time), while holding back foes with her dark magic.

Seeing how different their fighting styles seem so far gives me hope that the game will be more than just Dynasty Warriors with a Legend of Zelda skin. But the only question is who else will be added to the playable cast? Ganondorf is teased at the closing moments of the video, but will he be the primary antagonist? Or even better, can we play as him? Outside of fighting games, the wielder of the Triforce of Power has never been playable, I’m crossing my fingers!

Hyrule Warriors is planned for a September release exclusively for Wii U. Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: During this morning’s Nintendo Digital Event, the company absolutely blew us all away with the reveal of The Legend of Zelda for Wii U.

Eiji Aonuma took to the screen to talk about this reinvention of the franchise. Here’s what he had to say:

But, if you’re more interested in the first gorgeous-looking in engine footage, here you go:

The Legend of Zelda will hit Wii U in 2015. All I can say is wow.

Briefly: So Nintendo goes through a very tough financial year, and they’re still giving us things to be thankful for.

The big N has brought The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition back to the 3DS eShop, and it’s totally free for the next four days. That’s right! From now, until Sunday, February 2, at 11:59 p.m. (PST), you can jump on your 3DS and download the game at no cost.

I wasn’t a GBA owner back when Four Swords first launched, so I’ve missed out on the game until now. I can’t wait to grab a few 3DS-owning friends to play through it with!

Here’s what Nintendo had to say about the promotion:

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is GameSpot’s 2013 game of the year! We want to celebrate all things Hyrulian, so for a limited time we’re offering The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Anniversary Edition for FREE!

Just go to Nintendo eShop on your Nintendo 3DS or 2DS from Thursday, Jan. 30, at 9 AM (PST) until Sunday, Feb. 2, at 11:59 PM (PST) to download this awesome adventure. Grab it while you can: when the offer ends, it might be a while before you see the game again in Nintendo eShop.

The offer will be gone in a flash, but don’t hang up your Master Sword just yet—the celebrations will continue with the release of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, available for purchase on Nintendo eShop for Wii U, and a special Art Academy SketchPad event in Miiverse!

Now, let’s all show our thanks by going out and picking up a Wii U, okay?

Briefly: Here’s an awesome holiday treat for The Legend of Zelda fans.

Jared Potter, the same talented creator that brought us the impressive Bioshock: New Year’s End fan film is back again, and this time he’s taking on the creepiest character from the Legend of Zelda series: Skull Kid.

Potter shows viewers a Zelda world like they have never seen recreated through stunning visual effects. In the video, Skull Kid, a harmless but troublesome imp, has been cast out of the city of Clocktown. Deep within the lost woods, he must face the harsh realities of his banishment. There, amongst the trees, an ancient evil has also begun to stir, seeking out a creature suitable to become its puppet. Us fans will recognize many of the scenes in the short, especially the awesome ending.

Take a look at The Skull Kid below, and let us know what you think!

Another edition of Nintendo Direct has come and gone, and as promised, we left with a ton of new details on numerous 3DS titles. From Zelda, to Layton and Mario’s latest party, handheld owners will have their hands full within the coming months. With that said, the Wii U got a few bones thrown at it as well! Without further ado, here are the highlights from this morning’s conference Be warned: some of the content below contains spoilers.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds has a new trailer! If you weren’t hyped enough, new details about new characters like Irene the witch, (who is essentially used for fast travel,) and Seres, (essentially the game’s Zelda replacement,) were shown, as well as Zora Flippers, which allow Link to swim.

– Zelda Street Pass functionality was revealed and it sounds really awesome! Players will create their own Shadow Link, complete with an item loadout and a set amount of hearts. The stronger the Link, the higher the bounty, which will be awarded to others who can find the shadow on the map and take him down.

Mario Party Island Tour is also coming on November 22nd and allows download play for all seven of the game’s boards! Street Pass was also detailed, letting players compete in mini games against up to 10 ghost Mii’s. If you’re more of a loner, a single player “Bowser’s Tower” will have us competing in 30 floors worth of games, each one getting progressively harder until the boss fights that take place once every five floors.

Bravely Default features a wide variety of customization for the in game party, including abilities, jobs, spells and appearances. Some new mechanics include the Default System, a defensive stance that builds Brave Points that can be used to unleash powerful attacks when switched to the Brave System,  Sleep Points, which can be built up using a time stopping ability or while the system is in sleep mode, than can be exchanged for more powerful moves, and Street Pass, which brings other characters into battles to aid you, (if they’re not chosen to help rebuild your town.)

Bravely Default is releasing on February 7th, complete with a collectors edition. This contains the game, a set of AR cards, a soundtrack and an art book. Pricing has yet to be announced.

Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy will close out the second, (and presumably last,) Layton trilogy when it arrives on the 3DS on February 28th. It’ll be fun to see Layton, Luke an Emmy’s final adventure through, but I can’t say I’m ready to say goodbye to the professor. At least we have the Phoenix Wright crossover to look forward to!

– Nintendo Zone locations will be distributing the (formerly,) exclusive Best Buy Animal Crossing: New Leaf items throughout November, as well as a special item block for Super Mario 3D Land. Contents are unknown, but it might be worth checking out the next time you’re at a Starbucks.

– Possibly the biggest news of the day, a December system update will allow Wii U and 3DS currency to be combined. So if you have $5 burning a hole in your Wii U wallet, transfer it over to the 3DS! Because if this presentation has taught me anything, it’s that the 3DS has way more content to use it on.

– Miiverse support will also be added along with this update, so now you’ll be able to take your awkward screenshots and witty commentary with you, assuming you can access the Internet of course.

– Other updates include YouTube on the handheld and an upgraded YouTube app for Wii U, both of which will be available later this month.

– Finally, we shift to the Wii U. In addition to the two packs already released, Pikmin 3 will receive a third wave of downloadable content. Unlike the previous downloads, which were made up of remixed stages from the on disc story and mission content, this wave contains all new stages not found anywhere else in the game. Taking Olimar to stages like construction sites, the inside of homes, beaches and factories, the first Pikmin protagonist will be tasked with finding Louie on the map, who will then be playable, allowing them to take on multiple tasks at once.

Pikmin 3 DLC 3

– The DLC will be released on December 2nd and consist of eight total stages. These four treasure stages and four battle stages didn’t have a price tag attached to them, but one of each type will be free to all players who download the update for the content, both of which take place in the “Fortress of Festivity.”

– The Animal Crossing Plaza is getting a slew of updates! 50 Miiverse stamps are being added, so those who can’t draw to save their life, (like me,) can post decent pictures of the cast. Polls are also being introduced, letting the community vote on such important issues as, “who is the best secretary?” or, “who is the neighbor of the year?” Considering the game has only one secretary, I’m expecting a landslide. The update will go live later this evening.

– Future updates will include resident registration, so you can keep track of who is in your in game town, a function allowing Miiverse posts to be saved in the photo album and the ability to move and delete multiple photos at once. When they will be available is unknown, but I’d guess 2014 since that’s when the app is scheduled to go down.

– An indie game sizzle reel showed off a ton of content, including 1001 Spikes, Jett Rocket 2, the new Shantae and Retro City Rampage for the 3DS. You can check out the video showing off all of the indie game goodness below.

– And finally, we have 10 new things in Super Mario 3D World. From bonus modes to kart themed stages and 3D puzzles, it seems like the game will feature a ton of content we were never expecting, including one big reveal that I won’t post here. Watch the trailer below if you’re feeling adventurous, but trust me when I say it’s a great reason to get excited.

And… that’s about it? What news was the most exciting part for you all? I know I’m hyped about 3D World more than ever, but even games like Mario Party and Zelda, which I was planning on waiting on, sound hard to resist. But I’ve talked enough. Sound off and let us know what Nintendo content you’re most excited about leading into 2014!

Briefly: Just catching up on some news after this weekend’s fantastic Comikaze Expo, and this piece definitely caught my eye.

Nintendo has announced plans to debut an awesome lineup of new shows for the Fall season. Five series have been announced, including shorts based on The Legend of Zelda and Pikmin (which also reminds me that I still need to pick up Pikmin 3).

Here’s Nintendo’s description of the new shows (including Pendleton Ward’s fantastic Bravest Warriors):

The Legend of Zelda: The Misadventures of Link: This original series of comedic shorts shows Link, the series’ star, in a new and hysterical light. His surroundings will be familiar to fans of the series, since the shorts are based on The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD game for the Wii U console.

Pikmin Nature Documentaries: These “nature documentaries” explore the wonderful world of the tiny Pikmin. The animations, highlighted by dramatic voiceover work, are a tongue-in-cheek take on safari nature shows.

Bravest Warriors: The latest hit show created by Pendleton Ward, the mind behind Adventure Time, follows four teenage heroes-for-hire as they warp through galaxies to save adorable aliens and their worlds using the power of their emotions. The series is produced by Frederator Studios and launched on the Cartoon Hangover channel on YouTube. New episodes of Bravest Warriors will appear every Friday on Nintendo Video.

Wildheart Riukiu: This new series of 3D shorts comes from the creator of Meat or Die, which has already amassed more than 5 million views on Nintendo Video. Wildheart Riukiu incorporates charming 16-bit graphics with some not-so-charming, but hilarious, characters. Think ninja puppets.

Bee and PuppyCat: A Cartoon Hangover Shorts fan favorite, this two-part series by Natasha Allegri follows Bee, an out-of-work 20-something who has a life-changing collision with a mysterious creature she names PuppyCat.

I’ve never opened up Nintendo Video in the almost-year that I’ve owned my 3DS. I’ll definitely be checking these out though. Which show are you most excited for? Sound out below!

MisadventuresofLink

Zelda fans lost their minds last week when images of a golden 3DS surfaced, complete with Triforce logos on the front and back of the hardware. Announced for Japan and Europe, nerds across North America were frothing at the mouth for the seemingly inevitable announcement of the hardware hitting our shores.

Well, the wait is over, because Nintendo has officially unveiled the console for our side of the world. Coming November 22nd and packaged with a download code for a digital copy of the upcoming SNES sequel, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, gamers will be able to return to Hyrule in style.

If you needed a reason to finally invest in a 3DS, now is definitely the time. If the gorgeous golden sheen isn’t enough to sway you, maybe the strong library of games, including the recently released Pokemon X and Y, Mario and Luigi: Dream Team and of course, A Link Between Worlds when it releases just might do it. Until then, let us know if this new model will be in your hands come the end of November.

Briefly: Nintendo today debuted a brand-new trailer for their upcoming 3DS title, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

The video does a great job of showing off some of the game’s new mechanics (including the new mirrored world, Lorule, and the neat 2D Link). Seeing the TriForce appear onscreen just as in did in A Link to the Past is a great touch at the end of the trailer.

I can’t wait to pick up Pokémon X or Y, but A Link Between Worlds is really the 3DS title that I’ve been waiting for. My Vita does nothing but gather dust, and it seems as though my 3DS keeps getting better and better (though I would like to upgrade to an XL model soon).

Watch the new trailer below, and let us know how excited you are! The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds hits stores on November 22nd!

Briefly: November is going to be expensive.

In addition to a new console, a Wii U price drop, and plenty of Wii U release dates, Nintendo today also announced the release date for the highly anticipated The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

The game (along with the less-exciting, but probably still fun Mario Party: Island Tour) will launch on November 22nd for $39.99.

That means you only have a couple more months to replay A Link to the Past. You’re picking this one up, right?

First announced back in February, the highly anticipated (at least by me) rerelease of both The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages is less than two weeks away! Both titles will launch on the 3DS eShop on May 30th (as we learned back in April), and during today’s Nintendo Direct presentation, Nintendo revealed a special deal for early adopters.

The regular price of each title is $5.99, but from May 30th to June 20th, each game will cost you a cool $4.99. Watch the trailer for the rerelease below, and let us know if you’ll be picking these up!

Did I mention that it was a good day to be a Nintendo fan?

Big news was aplenty at today’s Nintendo Direct presentation. First, The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages are coming to the 3DS eShop this May. Second, EarthBound (FREAKING EarthBound!) is being rereleased on the Wii U Virtual Console later this year. Third, Pikmin 3 finally got a release date (August 4th).

How could things get any better? How about a follow-up to The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past?

You read that right. The oft-rumoured, oft-desired, yet never-existent sequel to 1992’s most beloved adventure game is currently in development over at the big N. The game will feature the same top-down look and feel (though this time in glorious 3D, and without sprites) as the original game did, but with an all-new plot, and plenty of fresh mechanics.

Nintendo released a cool trailer for the game (also available in 3D via the 3DS eShop) showing us what we can expect. The (currently untitled) Link to the Past follow-up is slated to hit the 3DS later in 2013. Watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think!
