Writer: Rick Remender
Artists: Jerome Opeña, Matt Hollingsworth

The God of Whispers has spread an omnipresent paranoia to every corner of the kingdom of Zhal; his spies hide in every hall spreading mistrust and fear. Adam Osidis, a dying knight from a disgraced house, must choose between joining a hopeless band of magic users in their desperate bid to free their world of the evil God, or accepting his promise to give Adam everything his heart desires. Writer RICK REMENDER reteams with collaborators JEROME OPEÑA (Uncanny X-Force, Fear Agent) and MATT HOLLINGSWORTH (TOKYO GHOST, WYTCHES) to take you on a hard road through the strange fantasy world of Zhal. Amazing Spider-Man #18
$3.99
Writer: Dan Slott
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli

BEFORE “DEAD NO MORE” marches you closer to the Spider-Event of 2016…THE MOMENT YOU’VE BEEN WAITING FOR HAS COME! Doc Ock has been trapped in the body of The Living Brain since the first issue, but now it’s time for him to act!

FINALLY! Doc Ock is coming back! We saw a bit of a lull in the early teen issues of Amazing Spider-Man but now it’s full steam ahead as we rapidly approach this fall’s big Dead No More event. I’ve been saying it for awhile now, issue #16 is a great jumping on point for this series. Jump on it, you can be sure you’ll want to be reading it this fall.

Honourable Mentions

DC’s first crossover event begins this week. “Night of the Monster Men” will span across Batman #7, Nightwing #5, and Detective Comics #941. All three of these books have been stellar on their own so I imagine the crossover is going to be great. There have been some unexpected twists in the other Bat books so I think it’s safe to expected the unexpected with this event.

It’s that wonderful time of the week again, New Comic Book Day! Weekly Reads is where we take the time to reflect upon last week’s titles.

DC

If you’ve been around for awhile, you’ll know I’m hooked on DC’s Rebirth right now. I keep telling you I’m going to cut back but every week I’m still picking up and reading everything I can. This week was no different.

Action Comics 960-000

💪 Action Comics #960

God damn, Action Comics is living up to it’s title right now! Not only does Superman’s battle with Doomsday continues this issue, but we got Wonder Woman in on the action too! It is also revealed very early in the issue that there is cloaked figure observing the battle from afar, who is presumably responsible for Doomsday’s latest appearance. If you like your comics light on dialogue and heavy on action, this book is for you.

Red Hood and the Outlaws - Rebirth (2016) 001-000

💪 Red Hood & the Outlaws – Rebirth #1

My lack of DC knowledge was put on full display reading this, I had no idea Red Hood was Jason Todd! So that was cool to find out. Man oh man, does DC have a lot of series with Batman involved (and still more to come!). I love how these Rebirth titles pay homage to iconic character moments, here we have Soy recreating the horrific events of “A Death in the Family” and it looks SO good! Lobdell did a perfect job capturing the friendly but strained relationship between Todd and Batman. I can’t wait to see what happens next in this series. This is probably my favourite of all the Rebirth issues so far.

👌 Batgirl #1

If you are worried about character baggage and not understanding what is going on in a book, this is a title for you. Batgirl is probably the most accessible of DC’s Rebirth titles. That said, the stakes didn’t feel high enough to peak my interest.

👌 Detective Comics #937

I’m enjoying the run so far. It’s nothing extraordinary but I’m entertained every issue. Again, if you are looking for a more Batman focused book, look elsewhere. This title pays much more attention to the team of Batwoman, Clayface, Red Robin, Spoiler and Orphan.

👌 Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps #1

You better know a thing or two about Green Lantern going into this or I fear you might get lost. Surprisingly, I’m more interested in Green Lanterns than I am this title but we’ll see where it goes.

👎 Nightwing #1

… I don’t have much to say about this book. Nothing really stood out for me. I think it’s probably heading in a cool direction but this issue wasn’t very memorable.

👌 The Flash #3

Flashes are everywhere! More and more people keep receiving the speed force, so much so that there’s now a training centre. Giandomenico’s art in this is great. I was growing tired of people becoming speedy but by the end of the issue we have a twist that will hopefully tug the series in a more interesting direction.

👎 Wonder Woman #3

I hate to give this book a thumbs down, because for all intents and purposes, the creative team is doing a great job. In fact, Sharp’s art is some of my favourite from all the Rebirth titles thus far. I blame my disinterest in this book entirely on my lack of Wonder Woman knowledge, I really don’t have a clue what is happening right now. Perhaps if I sat down and read 5 or 6 issues at a time I wouldn’t run into this problem. I think this series will be easy to recommend in trade, and if you have a knowledge of the character you’ll probably enjoy it, but if you’re like me and not familiar with Wonder Woman, you’ll probably want until you can read a few of these together.

Marvel

Yikes, maybe we should break out DC into it’s own article. It’s getting out of control. If you want to see something interesting, look at the first few Weekly Reads and observe the balance of Marvel to DC, it has completely flipped on it’s head.

👎 Black Panther #4

I know this series is getting a lot of love, but I find it difficult to read week by week. There’s just too much going on to remember it all, I definitely recommend waiting for this arc to end and go pick it up in trade.

Captain America - Steve Rogers 003-000

💪 Captain America – Steve Rogers #3

Gimmick or not, Spencer is doing a great job of orchestrating this story arc. Each issue being more interesting than the last. I can’t wait to see where it goes.

👌 Civil War II #4

I’ve been vocal with my dislike of all things Civil War II but this issue was pretty darn good. I think a lot of my issues with the series came from reading all the tie-in’s and being letdown by how little happened. However, if you just read the main book, I think there is enough going on week to week to stay interested and you don’t have to worry about feeling lost.

👎 Extraordinary X-Men #12

It’s my favourite of the current X-Men books but it’s just not worth the price of admission anymore. The art is great though!

Image

One of my favourite ongoing series’…

Outcast 019-000

💪 Outcast #19

I don’t think it’s aliens. I don’t think it’s demons. I don’t know what the heck it is but I do know that you should be reading this book and watching this show!

Usually, companies will try to keep their cards close to their chests right before a big E3 presentation. Apparently, Amazon had other plans when it came to Nintendo’s upcoming Legend of Zelda title for the Wii U and NX.

The image shows Link climbing a cliff with an expansive kingdom visible in the background. Based on the artwork itself, it’s clear that the focus seems to be exploration, while also showing off how big Hyrule might be this time around. With constant rumors swirling that this next entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series will take Link through a Skyrim inspired open world version of Hyrule, it would explain why this image sets the tone that it does.

E3 2016 The Legend of Zelda Leak Banner

With only a day away before Nintendo tips its hand to the public regarding their next big title, that gives us plenty of time to speculate until then. What conclusions do you draw after seeing this image, and what do you hope to see when the game finally releases early next year? Comment below and share your thoughts, and make sure to check back with us for our full impressions on the show floor!

Briefly: Finally, finally, finally, we’ve received our first look at the Cinemax adaptation of Robert Kirkman’s Outcast.

The TV adaptation was in the works before the first issue of the comic even hit store shelves. Not surprising at all, based on the popularity of The Walking Dead, and it certainly doesn’t hurt that Outcast, while a bit slow to get off the ground, has been a fantastic read so far.

Outcast focuses on Kyle Barnes, a man who has been plagued by possession for his entire life, and begins a journey to discover why. Kyle will be portrayed by Gone Girl actor Patrick Fugit. Expanded cast includes Philip Glenister as Reverend Anderson, a hard drinking, hard gambling West Virginian evangelical preacher who believes he’s a soldier in God’s holy war against evil, and Gabriel Bateman as Joshua Austin, a young boy who lives across town who appears to be possessed by a demon and has a mysterious connection to Kyle.

Take a look at the teaser trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the series. Outcast‘s 10-episode first season hits Cinemax in 2016!

The show’s debut season will contain 10 episodes, with a pilot directed by You’re Next director Adam Wingard.

At its core, the story is an exploration of choices—both good and bad. And now, how her choices have formed her into the person she has and will become. Briefly: AMC just ordered The Walking Dead spinoff series to pilot a few weeks ago, and we now have snippets of information on some of the series’ main characters.

Little is known about the series at this point, but The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman will act as executive producer along with Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert, while Sons of Anarchy writer Dave Erickson will act as showrunner on the new adaptation. The series is thought (though not confirmed) to be a prequel that chronicles the early days of the infection and zombie apocalypse.

Here’s who we’ll be seeing (via TVLine)

SEAN CABRERA | A Latino male in his early 40s, Sean is a good man trying to do right by everyone in his life.

CODY CABRERA | Sean’s whip-smart and rebellious teenage son. Known as the angriest kid in town.

NANCY TOMPKINS | A thirtysomething single mom to two kids, Nancy looks like the girl next door, but there’s an edge to her.

NICK TOMPKINS | Nancy’s screwed up teenage son. He’s too old to stay home, too scared to flee.

ASHLEY TOMPKINS | Nancy’s mostly level-headed teenage daughter. Her ambition is in direct proportion to her older brother’s failures. She loves her mom but it’s time to get out of Dodge.

ANDREA CHAPMAN | A somewhat wilted flower child, fortysomething Andrea — yep, another Andrea! — has retreated to the outskirts of the city to recover after a horrible marriage.

That’s right folks. We all loved Andrea so much the first time around that we’re getting another one.

All jokes aside, are you down for yet another version of The Walking Dead? Or is one series, a comic, and an incredible video game enough? Sound out below, and we’ll be sure to share more spinoff news as we hear it!

Way back in 2011, at ZombCon, me and Jonathan ran into Nat Jones. The creator of the amazing Zombie Comic ’68. His elevator pitch for his book hooked me on the spot. “The Night of The Living Dead came out in 1968. Where was the worst place on the planet during 1968? Vietnam of course!” The art style from this series is hyper detailed and extremely graphic. It really brought me in. So when Hallowed Ground came across my digital desk I jumped at the chance to read it.

Hallowed Ground is the turning point for the series. It takes the narrative home from Vietnam and back to the States. If you haven’t read the entire back issues, like I have, then this is a great jumping on point for anyone.

The opening scene of the book really shook me. We see a desolate church with gibbed zombies laying all over the yard. We see the sign of the church has been changed. Be it in a very macabre manner.

68 Hallowed Ground Church of Risen

The next panel made me express an audible “DAYUM!”. The first six pages owe their amazing layout to the late Josh Medor, who before his passing in 2012, started this book. His scenes are very dramatic and have focus emphasized in all the right places. We meet our characters inside the church. All are polar opposites of eachother. Our protagonist Apollyon, is fresh off the boat from Nam. The church priest Hiram and his wife. The chubby Sheriff and a small orphaned child. The narrative was full of exposition and mostly back story for Apollyon.

Here is my biggest gripe for the book. There isn’t actually a whole hell of a lot going on. Pages and pages of narrative, then 1.5 pages of extreme violence. The amazing art and gory bits really make up for it though. I have to give it some leniency: It is a series starting point for the new issues next year, and doesn’t lend itself for a whole lot of action. They’re trying to setup the new series. It is actually a double issue, the story of the church is told from two point of views ( I’ll get to the 2nd one shortly). It is a dieing mans last work, and I feel if Josh was able to finish the whole book it may have been a tad bit more cohesive.

After a quick fast climax in the story, we are jarred out of the inside of the church and into the Bell Tower. This was when I realized this was actually a two parter. Part 1 ended with “a blast” and part 2 links up with the first narrative at that point and moves on.

Up in the Bell Tower we meet another Vet. Angel, who is a sniper, is picking off zombies in the yard all the while protecting a hurt woman named Sarah. Again my main gripe returns, way to much narrative setting up the characters motivations and past with little to nothing actually happening. It doesn’t last long as the action ramps up quickly in the Bell Tower, all climaxing in about 1.5 pages, but like the first part. What I particularly enjoyed during this scene was a reanimated torso climbing the drain pipe of the church. These Zombies aren’t your normal dumb Walking Dead, they feel like they have a bit more brains and will stop at nothing to get their feed on.

All I was very pleased with this one shot. It really set the tone for the new issues coming out in 2014. My score fluctuated a half point the entire time I read this book. Apollyon’s very dark origin story felt drawn and tedious, but it all paid off in the end. I am going to have to err on the lower score though, its a great book and it looks amazing, but it is just missing something.

Final Score: 3.5/5 Rotting Corpses.

Briefly: The Walking Dead premiered last week to a whopping 16 million viewers, and AMC today took us behind-the-scenes of season four with a new featurette.

The video features interviews with plenty of the series’ cast and crew, who assure us that they still have some tricks up their sleeve, and that this season is leading up to something bigI guess that all we can do is hope that it doesn’t end like last year, right?

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know what you think! Did you enjoy Sunday’s season premiere?

Briefly: Remember last year when The Walking Dead‘s third season premiere drew in a record number of viewers?

Last night’s premiere has blown that record out of the water. Seriously. Season three premiered to 10.9 million viewers, while season four’s opener drew in a whopping 16.1 million people.

AMC states that “The Walking Dead returned last night for its fourth season, delivering the highest ratings of any episode in series history. The season four premiere was watched by 16.1 million total viewers and 10.4 million adults aged 18-49. Last night’s ratings confirm The Walking Dead continues to be the #1 show on all of television among the coveted 18-49 demographic. 2013/14 season to date, last night’s premiere ranks as the #1 telecast in adults 18-49, outperforming all programs including primetime NFL football. With time-shifted playback, last night’s premiere should exceed 20 million viewers.”

AMC President Charlie Collier continues, “Sincere thanks to the fans, who have welcomed The Walking Dead back for its fourth season with the highest-rated episode in the show’s history. We could not be more proud of this show and everyone on both sides of the camera who work so hard to give life to this story of character, leadership and survival. It starts with series creator, writer and executive producer Robert Kirkman, show runner and executive producer Scott Gimple and the director of last night’s episode (and the man behind the make-up) executive producer Greg Nicotero, their fellow executive producers and an extraordinary cast and crew who are giving their all every day. So clearly, thanks to them, the dead have never been more alive.”

Those are some pretty insane numbers, huh? Did you watch last night’s episode? I have no idea when I’ll find the time to check it out, but be sure to let us know your thoughts!

Briefly: Season four of The Walking Dead premieres tomorrow, and AMC today revealed two new additions to the already expansive cast.

Rosita was cast back in September, leaving us all to wonder if we’d be seeing Eugene and Abraham too. Castings for the two characters were revealed today, so it looks as thought the trio is complete!

Abraham will be played by Southland’s Michael Cudlitz, who tweeted the following photo of himself on set:

Josh McDermitt will portray Dr. Eugene Porter, who basically lied about knowing the cause of the pandemic, convincing Abraham to take him to Washington, meeting up with Rick and the others on the way. Here’s a photo of Josh:

I’m looking forward to seeing the trio introduced. Their arcs have always been interesting in the comic series, and Abraham was a wonderfully developed character before he met his untimely demise.

Are you excited for the premiere tomorrow? I’ll be busy celebrating Canadian Thanksgiving, but I’m sure it’ll be a great watch once I’m done!

Briefly: There’s just 12 more days until the highly anticipated season premiere of The Walking Dead, and AMC has debuted two new teasers for the show.

The videos feature some new footage from the season, and reminds us that basically everything we’ve seen from season four has looked awesome. Scott Gimple has already done some phenomenal work on the series (remember last year’s Clear?), and I firmly believe he’s going to be a fantastic showrunner.

Take a look at the promos below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the season! The Walking Dead premieres on October 13th!

Briefly: The ever growing group of survivors in AMC’s The Walking Dead is about to add one more.

The network announced today that Twilight star Christian Serratos will join the series as Rosita Espinosa. Rosita has been a prominent character in the Image comic series for a number of years now, making her first appearance in issue 53 along with Abraham Ford and Dr. Eugene Porter.

It’s not know whether or not her companions will also be added to the series, but at this point a casting announcement has not been made. Christian will guest star in multiple episodes this year, and has been optioned to become a series regular for the inevitable fifth season of The Walking Dead.

With less than a month to go until The Walking Dead premieres, are you looking forward to the Scott Gimple led fourth season? Are you happy with the casting of Rosita, or is there another actress you’d rather have seen in the role? Sound out below!

Briefly: The anticipated fourth season of The Walking Dead premieres in just a few weeks, and AMC today debuted a great new extended preview for the show.

Featuring both new footage and behind-the-scenes interviews, the new preview answers some of the burning questions fans have about season four… and introduces even more.

Take a look at the new (sadly low resolution) trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the new season! While you’re at it, let us know what you thought of the season three finale!

Briefly: With The Walking Dead returning in just another month, AMC today debuted yet another brief teaser for the upcoming season.

Judging from all of the trailers released so far, I couldn’t be more excited for the Scott Gimple-led fourth season of the popular drama. Woodbury’s gone, the politics are over, and the walkers are finally about to get into the prison.

Take a look at the new teaser below, and let us know if you’re excited! The Walking Dead premieres on October 13th!

Briefly: Following the new poster and behind the scenes video released just yesterday, AMC has released a quick, 15-second long teaser for the upcoming premiere of The Walking Dead.

The teaser shows a batch of our favourite survivors, with someone (whose voice I don’t quite recognize) asking for help in the background.

Take a look at the quick teaser below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the premiere! Looking for more The Walking Dead? Why not take a class on the subject?

The Walking Dead premieres on October 13th!

Briefly: With just over one month to go until The Walking Dead returns on AMC, the show’s marketing push has just been turned up a notch.

Today, the network debuted a new behind-the-scenes video, which features The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman giving a tour of one of the show’s many sets. AMC has also released a new piece of key art for the season, which spotlights Rick standing all alone near a broken fence. As we’ve seen from the already released trailer, the walkers are bound to get in at some point.

Take a look at the new video and artwork below, and let us know if you’re excited! The Walking Dead returns on October 13th!

Briefly: With the 10th anniversary of The Walking Dead and All Out War beginning this October, Image has just revealed that The Walking Dead #115 will feature 10 connecting covers.

Every weekday for the next two weeks, a new cover will be revealed. Each piece will feature a very important moment from the history of The Walking Dead. Take a look at the first cover below (from the comic’s third year), and let us know if you’re planning to pick up all 10! The Walking Dead #115 hits stores on October 9th!

Briefly: We’re just over a month away from the return of television’s biggest series, The Walking Deadand AMC today debuted the first clip from the upcoming season.

From the clip, it looks as though the prison folks are doing pretty well for themselves. They’ve built a much better door system than the old fences would have had, plus it looks like there’s a pretty solid barrier around the prison (or at least this area). Could Michonne be hurt, however? Why does she spend so much time trying to keep the walkers at bay, instead of simply slicing their heads off?

Take a look at the clip below (clip begins at 36 seconds), and let us know what you think! Season four of The Walking Dead premieres on October 13th!

Briefly: The return of AMC’s The Walking Dead is just a few months away, and the network today debuted a great new behind-the-scenes featurette.

The video features much of the show’s cast (plus The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman) revealing just a little of what you should expect in the fourth season. From the sounds of it, we’re in for an intense premiere, and what could be the most exciting year yet.

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know what you think! The Walking Dead returns on October 13th!

Briefly: Here it is folks, the highly anticipated, long awaited first trailer for season four of AMC’s adaptation of The Walking Dead.

The show’s disappointing (understatement?) third season finale was a stark departure from the prison arc in Kirkman’s comic, and left all of us wondering just what could come next. Now that they’ve filled the prison with old folks and children, it seemed as though our survivors were set to begin working on rebuilding a small society. As you can see from the below trailer, things (expectedly) don’t work out that way.

I won’t spoil things further, so take a look at the awesome first trailer below, and let us know what you think! Scott Gimple’s the man, and I think we’re gearing ourselves up for the best season yet!

Did you see Macon on that map? Could we be seeing a Telltale tie-in/Easter egg? Where is the Governor? Sound out below!

Can you believe that The Walking Dead is almost ten years old?

During yesterday’s Image Expo, The Walking Dead co-creator Robert Kirkman outlined some fantastic plans for the future of the series, and things really start to kick off during the franchise’s anniversary month this October.

First, it’s All Out War. A new 12 issue arc beginning with issue #115 brings The Walking Dead bi-weekly. Whether you side with Rick Grimes’ “Survivors,” Jesus’s “Hilltop,” Negan’s “Saviors,” or Ezekiel’s “Kingdom,” this is certainly a war that you won’t want to miss.

Next up is a very special, full colour rerelease of The Walking Dead‘s premiere issue. Award-winning colourist Dave Stewart is tackling the important task of colouring Tony Moore’s classic artwork. Regardless of how many are printed, you know that this one will sell out completely.

Last, but not least. October will see the release of The Walking Dead: Tyreese Special, which will again reintroduce us to the character with a reprint of his first appearance (all the way back in issue #7), and a reprint of his Free Comic Book Day origin story.

Preview images have not yet been released, but we’ll be sure to share as soon as they’re unveiled! Are you looking forward to All Out War?

Just two days ago, we showed you the uninspired opening cinematic for Activision’s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. Today, the game released in North America, and the company has unveiled a launch trailer to excite fans.

Watch the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Before you buy the game however, note that no reviews for the title have been published yet, which is never a good sign.

If you bought the game anyways, let us know how it is!

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is a do-whatever-you-need-to-survive first-person action game that brings the deep, character-driven world of AMC’s Emmy®Award-winning TV series onto console gaming systems and the PC. The game follows the mysterious, crossbow-wielding survivor Daryl Dixon, brought to life by TV series star Norman Reedus, alongside his overbearing brother Merle, voiced by Michael Rooker, on a haunting, unforgiving journey across the Georgia countryside. Players will need to tread carefully on this desperate quest, scrounging for food, water, and ammunition to survive against nightmares both living and undead.

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is just a few days away from hitting store shelves. Today, the opening cinematic featured in the title has been released online. The cinematic is a clear homage to the opening credit sequence from the AMC series, but with one obvious difference; this one looks terrible.

I sure hope this game has some personality; from what we’ve seen so far graphically, Survival Instinct is nothing to write home about. Watch the cinematic below, and let us know what you think!

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct releases this Tuesday, March 19th. If it stinks, and you’re hankering for an awesome undead experience, I’d wholeheartedly recommend Telltale’s adaptation of The Walking Dead, or Ubisoft’s ZombiU.

We’re now just two weeks away from the launch of Activision‘s The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. The publisher has released a cool behind-the-scenes video featuring Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus, talking about the title and their involvement with it.

Last month an official gameplay trailer was released for the game, and while vastly improved from the early gameplay footage we saw in January, Survival Instinct is still looking rather generic to me.

Only time will tell how this one will turn out. The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct launches on March 26th for Xbox 360, Wii U, PS3, and PC. Watch the new video below, and let us know what you think!

I was just two years old when Image Comics came to be. Sure, I’ve read plenty of stories and accounts over the years of just how the company came into existence, but I’ve never heard the story from the creators themselves.

That’s all about to change. This isn’t Rob Liefeld’s Iconsbut Patrick Meaney’s The Image Revolution. The documentary features plenty of Image creators, including Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Robert Kirkman, Fiona Staples, and plenty (plenty) of others.

Watch the trailer for the film below, and let us know what you think! The Image Revolution is expected to release sometime in August. For more info, head to the Sequart Research and Literacy Organization‘s official website!

Twenty years ago, the seven biggest superstars created their own company and changed an industry forever. From “Spawn” to “The Walking Dead,” this is the story of Image Comics.
