Paula Rhodes might not be a household name to some Geekscapists but you’ve probably heard her voice in games like GTA V, Red Dead Redemption 2 and the Resident Evil series! Beyond that she’s been in fan favorite projects like ‘The New Adventures of Pete and Wendy’ and ‘Elf Quest: A Fan Imagining’! Well now she’s on Geekscape talking about her new project ‘Delicate State’, a modern day civil war thriller that she made while she was pregnant! Paula talks about the difficulties of writing an improv heavy production, shooting on a shoe string budget around real world events, possibly stealing locations while pregnant and tons more! Along the way, I rave about the ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ movie and talk about why comparing it to ‘Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey’ is dumb, dumb, dumb. Enjoy!

About a week ago, I discussed the Sonic Mania Panel that was held this year at Comic-Con.

During the showcase, Sega showed us the first screenshot and music for the brand new special stages. Now we finally have gameplay of the aforementioned stages as well as a peak at the returning orb stages from Sonic 3 & Knuckles!  It only seems like the hype is rising as Sonic Mania is only about 2 weeks away from release. Check out the trailer below! Sonic Mania releases for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, and PC on August 15th.

During this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I was invited to a special invite-only shindig at The Omni Hotel. The party showcased what is new and shiny in the world of gaming technology, particularly in the field of virtual reality.

Being a SEGA nerd, I made a beeline to the Sonic-dedicated area. The activity available was “Sonic’s Ring Jump,” in which you jump and perform a series of actions against a green screen, ending in an attempted jump on the trampoline beneath the stage to catch the gold ring dangling from the ceiling. Catching the ring nets you a prize of one thousand dollars.

After your likely failure to catch the prize, your butt-first landing (or whatever graceful pose you achieved) was captured along with the rest of your pantomiming and added to a short video, making it appear as if you were running through a level in either Sonic Mania or Sonic Forces. You could send yourself the little film afterwards.

This section was open to the public during the day but I definitely dug that the line to participate was pretty much non-existent at the party.

This sign was also left up from the daytime activities. The artwork gave me a chuckle.

One booth that was noticeably popular was that belonging to MX4D. The setup made me think of a stripped-down Star Tours. In the back of the exhibit were these mechanical two-seater chair things. The seats can swing back and forth, turn at different angles, and rumble. With the VR goggles on, it was a very convincing roller coaster experience!

What were people looking at through those goggles? Well, for those waiting in line (check out the “30 minute wait from this point” signage), there was a large TV screen playing what the “riders” were seeing. The ride was’t just about the sensations of the tracks. There was a freaking dragon chasing you! How awesome is that? It is no wonder there was always a line.

Chilling by the Sonic displays was a standee of Neil deGrasse Tyson, decked out in a fancy space get-up. What was that doing there?

I soon found out that the famous astrophysicist had teamed up with a group of game developers to create Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Space Odyssey. The title’s Kickstarter campaign just ended (they were successfully funded) but you can still get a seat on this rocket before it takes off. Their Indiegogo page remains open and I highly recommend you check it out!

The concept is, put in simpler terms, a space-exploration game but with worlds created by the likes of Bill Nye, George R.R. Martin, Neil Gaiman, Peter Beagle, and Tyson himself. The title promises Metroidvania-style gameplay, with exploration dictated by the tools, skills, or resources necessary to access certain areas, as well as VR missions.

I was very impressed by the technology showcased that night. Gamers and tech buffs have a lot to look forward too.

October always means a busy month for gaming, with the holiday release schedule being in full swing. With so many hard hitting games, Rumble seems to be a fitting theme for the month. To celebrate the release of Titanfall 2, as well as paying tribute to some other great games from past to present, Loot Gaming has some surprising items to reward our fandom. Without further ado, here’s what we’ve got!

img_5557

Starting with two original items for the Rumble crate, a pin commemorating the month shows two boxing gloves clashing with “October 2016” being engraved at the bottom and “Rumble” at the top. The included poster sets the scene for a futuristic battle, while the back details all the goods that have arrived for the month.

Prepare for Titanfall. Titanfall 2 is the major new release being focused on this month with a new T-Shirt featuring the silhouette of a Titan and its pilot. Simple, but recognizable enough thanks to the iconic mech in the background, we’ve found out shirt of choice when its time to hit the battlefield.

img_5558

Taking a more villainous turn for our other clothing options for the month, we’ve got not one, but TWO accessories that will surely keep us warm with the fires of hatred they both exude. First, Dr. Eggman may not be able to defeat the world’s fastest hedgehog, but at least his hands will be nice and cozy with these Game Over gloves. These are great, but the biggest surprise of the crate came from the pair of Toon Ganondorf socks courtesy of Bioworld. Wind Waker is my favorite iteration of The Legend of Zelda, so full length Ganon socks would be something I’d buy on their own. Knowing that, my enthusiasm when I saw these resting in the box went through the roof. All it’s missing is a slot in the forehead.

Going from a pair of classic villains to one that’s captured the hearts of our meme filled modern times, Reaper from Overwatch arrived as an adorable Funko Pop figure! I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the brand, mostly because the vast majority look identical. This is why when one comes along that has extra detail, it catches my attention even more. Reaper is one of these cases, with a unique mask and well crafted shotguns that look like they could be straight out of a Play of the Game, it’s close as to whether this or the Ganonforf socks win best item for the month.

img_5559

What easily wins the prize for the strangest item this month is this box of Pac-Man adhesive bandages. Wondering why one would ever need these outside of the inevitable moment when a giant yellow ball eats your finger, the back of the poster made everything clear. This month, if you show off your rumble wounds by getting creative with your bandages, you’ll have a chance to win a Wii U and a copy of Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. With the console ceasing production this week, you might want to jump on the chance to win it, especially because Pac-Man himself is in it!

img_5564

To round out the line up, we can’t talk about retro heroes or Smash Bros without mentioning Mario. Now the plumber can go wherever you want with this Mario magnet. When you want to be greeted when rummaging the fridge for mushrooms or have his smile to look forward to when stepping into the car for the day, you’ll never have to go without the savior of the Mushroom Kingdom.

That’s a wrap for October! What are your thoughts on this month’s Loot Gaming offerings? As always, share your thoughts below, and make sure to use “Geekscape” as your promotional code for a discount!

Thanks to our friends over at Loot Crate, we have another exciting unboxing for you all! This round is the September 2016 shipment for their Loot Wear line. The theme this month is “Gotta Go Fast” and features clothing themed to characters who are all about speed and moving!

lootwear-oct16-sonic-socks

The Sonic the Hedgehog socks were far and away my favorite item from this month. The tag says that they are exclusive to the subscription service. The socks feature an all-around print with the Blue Blur and some gold rings. Wear them to make your slower friends jealous!

lootwear-oct16-deadpool-socks

There were also some Deadpool athletic socks included. But when you think of Deadpool… do you think of speed? Well, maybe the speed at which he swings those swords and throws out snappy one-liners!

lootwear-oct16-mario-kart-shirt lootwear-oct16-mario-kart-shirt-zoom

Subscribers also received a Mario Kart shirt (who doesn’t dread that blue shell?), another Loot Wear-exclusvie. The fabric was in the distressed-style with some parts thinner than the others. A pretty awesome reminder that no matter where you are on the track, you can always catch up!

lootwear-oct16-transformers-jerseylootwear-oct16-transformers-jersey-zoom

This shipment included two Transformers items, the first of which being an Autobots soccer jersey. The polyester fabric had some give to it but I didn’t terribly like the texture overall. It felt a little slick and unlike what I am used to in terms of clothing but that is just my opinion. The jersey featured a large patch of the Autobots emblem… just in case there was a question as to who you were “rolling out” with!

lootwear-oct16-transformers-shorts lootwear-oct16-transformers-shorts-zoom

The second Transformers piece was a pair of what appear to be work-out shorts with a print of the character, Arcee, on one side. The shorts were made of a soft jersey.

I was a little underwhelmed by this shipment, personally. I think one of the problems was my lack of interest in several of the franchises included, specifically Deadpool and Transformers. And while I did love the Sonic crew socks, I can’t think of a time that I would wear them. Perhaps the largest issue was that the majority of the items included seemed to be made with men in mind. There actually is a more women-oriented Loot Wear subscription, “Loot for Her,” which I think would have suited me better.

If this unboxing has you interested in subscribing, you can get some money off of your first Crate either by following this link or entering “Geekscape” into the promo code area upon checkout! If speed is your thing, this Loot Wear crate might still be available so head on over!

From the beginning, one of the main selling points of Lego Dimensions has been its ability to bring characters from a wide variety of franchises together under one roof. Heading into the second season of the Toys To Life title, it’s safe to say that Sonic The Hedgehog’s reveal during E3 season had to have been the most surprising, bringing one of gaming’s biggest icons into the Lego world. Hot on the heels of two new game announcements featuring the blue blur, Traveler’s Tales and WB Games have given us our first footage of Sonic in action.

Lego Dimensions Sonic Level Pack

At first glance, it’s surprising how well represented Sonic’s world is. Featuring some of the game’s iconic enemies and locations in the trailer ranging from Green Hill Zone to the city in Sonic Adventure, imagine my surprise when the developers went as far as to have the destroyed robots drop trapped animals when destroyed! Equipped with many of the attacks that have become synonymous with Sonic over the years, including the Spin Dash, Homing Attack, and the recently added dive kick, rings and robots are abound in what looks to be a faithful Level Pack. If anything, the only aspect that seems lost is the sense of speed that his actual games typically have… Assuming TT isn’t purposely basing their adaptation on Sonic Lost World. In that case, they nailed it!

But the most surreal part of watching Sonic’s trailer is seeing him explore all these other universes. I mean, Sonic in Portal. Sonic in Adventure Time. Sonic fighting side by side with the Justice League! What a time to be alive! Scheduled to be released on November 18 and packaged with his trademark Tornado biplane and Sonic Speedster, this is looking to be an interesting 12 months for Sega’s mascot.

Tonight was the night of the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party, and things didn’t go quite as expected. Most of the party was plagued by terrible audio and visual problems that were quite embarrassing.

Aside from that, there was some awesome news that’s sure to make any Sonic fan spin dash their way to the nearest Gamestop to put in some pre orders. First up was the announcement Sonic Mania, a brand new 2D game featuring popular indie dev & fan Christian Whitehead as one of the main programmers. The game will have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles playable, as well as introducing new zones, old favorites, and much more. Check out the announce trailer here!

That wasn’t all though, as Sega had one last surprise for the hedgehogs fans. As a final announcement, they confirmed that a brand new 3D installment has also been in development. The game looks to take place after Sonic Generations and could possibly be a sequel to the popular 2011 title. Check out the trailer and come up with your own theories on what it could be!

Both games are  confirmed for a 2017 launch with mania being spring 2017 while project 2017 is looking at a Holiday window. both games are scheduled to release on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and even NX in the case of P2017. What do you think? Are you excited about all these new titles? Tell us in the comments below!

For about the past week, WB Games has been teasing fans about what’s next to come for their toys to life genre game Lego Dimensions, and today we finally got an answer.

Expect things to get even CRAZIER than they did in the first one because they are once again going all out. Some of the newcomers are Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Mission Impossible, Gremlins, Goonies, and many more. Even Sonic is joining in on the fun. YES YOU HEARD THAT RIGHT! SONIC THE FREAKING HEDGEHOG HIMSELF. Not much more is known about the game whether it’s a full on sequel or just a massive expansion, but it seems like most of this stuff will be releasing this fall for PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Are you excited about this? What franchise do you still want to see in Lego Dimensions? Tell us in the comments below!

Sonic fans will be pleased to hear that the Sony produced animation/live action hybrid movie is a bit closer than what you’d expect.

In a recent interview with website The Worldfolio, President and CEO of Sega, Hajime Satomi, has said that they’re expecting the movie to launch sometime in 2018. For those wondering, Sega announced a couple of years ago that they’d be partnering with Sony to create an animation/live action Sonic movie. While interesting, we’ve all seen what happens to these kind of hybrid movies *COUGH COUGH The Smurfs COUGH COUGH.* Sorry about that, I’ve got a small cold. Are you excited for the Sonic movie? Let us know in the comments!

In their own version of a Christmas, GalaxyTrail has just revealed a sequel to their wildly popular franchise Freedom Planet!  It seems not long ago that we wrote about the possibility of a 3DS port of the original, however, we are excited to hear that it’s getting a continuation!

While the trailer sets the baseline for their new story, information about the mechanics of their new game can be found at their website.  It already appears to have much of the Sonic-esque momentum based combat that we’ve all come to know and love from the first game.

The Freedom Planet franchise is about a spunky dragon girl and her friends who go up against a deadly alien force, and uses momentum based combat similar to the Sonic the Hedgehog games of the 16-bit era.  It was designed as a throwback to platformers of its style, but we believe this sequel will cement it as its own franchise, and step out of the shadows of the games of yesteryear!

Freedom Planet 2 will be available on PC and Wii U.

Looking for some classic Sonic The Hedgehog style action? Look no further than Galaxy Trail’s Freedom Planet. The game is ‘a combat-based platform adventure that pits a spunky dragon girl and her friends against an alien attack force.

If you are a fan of the 16-bit era Sonic games, it’s definitely worth a look–as it uses many of the traditional elements of the Sonic games, while adding its own twists, such as a special meter for certain kinds of boosts and double jumps.

The game was a successful, celebrated Kickstarter project back in 2013, and has received myriads of praise from gamers all over the world. Of course, Freedom Planet would be make for an incredible mobile experience, and during a recent Reddit AMA, Galaxy Trail talked about a possible 3DS port of the title, noting:

The game’s resolution is nearly perfect for the 3DS, but there are some technical restrictions we’d have to deal with first and we also want to think of a good way to utilize the touch screen.

Of course, they also chatted about Freedom Planet‘s transistion from a Sonic The Hedgehog fan title to its own, original property:

Very, very early on. The switch happened when we were still playing around with the physics engine and everything was drawn as boxes and circles, haha. The only Sonic element that existed in some form was rings, which were soon switched out for life petals.

The game is currently available on PC via Steam, and Nintendo’s Wii U, and again, we’d encourage you to give it a look! The full AMA is also filled with interesting questions and answers, so if Freedom Planet looks at all interesting to you, I’d go ahead and take look.

Despite its current reputation, people still take notice when they hear that the creator of Sonic The Hedgehog, Yuji Naka, is developing a new property. After floating around in development hell for a few years and shifting over to a new platformer, it won’t be long until we’ll be able to play Rodea The Sky Soldier for ourselves. At E3, we were able to check out the first few missions of the upcoming Wii U and 3DS game and see if it lives up to its creator’s pedigree.

Rodea E3 2015 Screen 1

As Rodea, a reactivated android who must protect the land from the evil that defeated him in the past, has a huge world in the sky to explore.Considering how low key this release has been, I was impressed to see how large of a scope this game has. If you can see it on screen, you’ll be able to go there, but you’ll have to strategically plan your jumps. While Rodea can fly for a short period of time, he needs to make contact with land or destroy an enemy in order to replenish the amount of time he can stay airborne. If you underestimate the distance, it’s going to be a long way down!

Holding one button to activate his reticule sets his flight path, while the attack button sends him towards enemies at full speed, barreling at them with a vicious spin attack, (sound familiar?). Flying through rings will set him on a short, on rails path to new areas, while collecting stars along the way counts both for points, and the ability to unleash a screen clearing super attack once you have 50 in hand. Feeling like a combination of sequences from Sonic Adventure 2 and Nights, it’s clear to see that Naka has his hands all over this project, which is a welcome realization.

Rodea E3 2015 Screen 2

Originally designed as a Wii game, there was also some good news for those purchasing the title on the Wii U version. What might be the final Wii release, all copies of the Wii U version will come bundled with a Wii copy, which will exclusively feature motion controls, and an online mode that lets players experience this huge world with friends from around the world. Combining this information with the jam packed collectors edition that was previously announced, and this package is looking sweeter by the day!

Rodea Collectors Edition

With all the praise out of the way, Rodea wasn’t without its problems. The controls take some getting used to, with jumping and targeting not being as intuitive as I would have liked. When on land, the camera mirrored the Dreamcast Sonic games in the worst way, often getting stuck or zooming in at the wrong times. Worst of all, while falling out of the sky with no land under you should result in an instant death, we’re forced to watch Rodea fall… and fall… and fall, until the game registers the lost life and sends us back to the checkpoint. Having said that, some of the other hiccups the game suffered, namely short jump times and weak attack distance will be improved as the player upgrades, so hopefully the rest of the problems will be addressed before the game releases in October.

Considering all of this new information, will you find Rodea: The Sky Soldier on your list of must buy games this October? Let us know in the comments if you’re planning on experiencing Yuji Naka’s next great adventure!

Two weeks ago we released Geekscape’s excellent 331st episode, in which Jonathan had an incredible 60+ minute conversation with Console Wars author Blake J. Harris. The duo gabbed about the creation of the book, their childhoods, the film adaptations, and much much more, and it was definitely one of my favourite episodes of the show.

On top of the episode, we’ve also uploaded a new video to the GeekscapeTV YouTube channel. Jonathan and Blake’s conversation continues into the conception of the idea for the book, and evolves into Blake revealing his 5 favourite Sega Genesis games.

Take a look at the video below, check out our Console Wars review here,  and be sure to subscribe to GeekscapeTV for plenty more where this came from!

And I mean that in the nicest way possible.

But seriously, when the new Sonic title was unvieled by the former Naughty Dog developers at Big Red Button, I couldn’t remember an Internet hatestorm as big as that in a very long time. Despite the change in appearance for some of our favorite characters, (like whatever the hell happened to Knuckles), some of that anger was quelled when it was revealed that Sonic Boom would be its own series as opposed to being part of the core Sonic universe. Considering we’ve survived the blue hedgehog turning into a warewolf, becoming a medivil knight and falling in love with an underage human girl, I’d say fresh hands on the franchise with no effect on the main timeline can’t be too bad, right?

SonicBoom1

So when you take away the jarring character designs, all that’s left is the game play, right? Well, game play is king as they say, (who they are I have no idea). After trying my hand at the console exclusive Rise of Lyric, it’s safe to say that Sonic Boom is aiming high where it counts, to the point where I wasn’t even thinking of the hedgehog of old when the controller was in my hands.

During my playthrough, the influence of games like Uncharted was immediately noticable, placing this version of Sonic and friends in the roles of treasure hunters. The demo gave me the ability to switch between Sonic and Knuckles on the fly with both characters on screen at all times. Certain areas can only be accessed by using a particular character’s special ability, (like Sonic’s spin dash or Knuckle’s knuckles). Yes, there are still core mechanics synonymous with the franchise, so each cast member will have a distinctive role in how the adventure proceeds. You might be reading this and think, “Hey, that sounds great for co-op!” Well, I’ve got good news on that front, because full jump in/jump out co-op play is confirmed for the title as well. Now all I need to do is find some friends…

With a much bigger emphasis on exploration and platforming over speed, much of the demo was spent fighting enemies and solving puzzles, most of which needed the crew’s new tether called the Enerbeam. The beam was used for pulling and throwing enemies with a spin of the control stick as well as pulling far away platforms towards you to advance. Combined with actual attack combos that consist of more than just jumping on things and a health bar that’s tied to how many rings you collect, and you’re looking at a huge departure in Sonic’s standard game play to go with the visual change.

SonicBoom2

And as they say, change is scary, but it can also be a good thing. So far, Rise Of Lyric is looking to be a VERY good thing, breathing some fresh life into an on again off again series. I wish I could say the same for the 3DS version, Shattered Crystal, but the brief moments that I had with it made the portable version feel inferior. Developed by Sanzaru Games, (the team behind The Sly Collection and Sly Cooper: Thieves In Time), the 3DS game acts as a 2D side scrolling maze. Four of the playable characters were available to switch between at once with the tap of the touch screen, including series newcomer Sticks the Badger, using their unique abilities to reach areas that the others cannot. Compared to its console counterpart, the puzzles, action and stages felt much more one dimensional, and felt more like a chore than fresh. When you take away Sonic’s trademark speed, you have to have a solid bag of tricks to back the game up. So far, Shattered Crystal has some catching up to do.

With months left before the release though, there’s plenty of time to do just that. When reflecting on my play time, I feel like Sonic Boom just might be the right direction for the franchise to go in after all. The new ideas that the console version introduced made me excited for what the future holds, but we’ll have to wait until November to see if it avoids the Sonic Cycle.

Blake Harris is the author of ‘Console Wars’, the story about Sega VS Nintendo and the battle that defined a generation! Who doesn’t remember Sonic vs Mario or the arguments they had about the Sega Genesis being better than the Super Nintendo? Blake spent three years interviewing and researching the behind the scenes events that brought these moments to life. On this episode, we talk about the Mortal Kombat Blood Code, Sonic Tuesday, what were the best video game moments of the early 90s and whether or not there really were any other console wars? This is a great episode, whether or not you’re a video game fan!

If you ever told me that Sonic The Hedgehog would appear in the land of Hyrule, I would’ve thought you were one of those funny kinds of people. You know, the ones who thought Sonic 06 was a great game. But after today, it looks like this mash up is really a thing, courtesy of the FREE Legend of Zelda DLC for Sonic: Lost World.

Coming on March 27th, the trailer shows Sonic speeding through Hyrule with a variety of creatures from various Zelda games in tow. What really sent my hype levels into the stratosphere was the idea that Hyrule seems to be somewhat of an open world. While the interior dungeons seem to take the form of a traditional Sonic level, the fact that Sonic can actually explore the kingdom while seeking out Rupees and Heart Pieces sounds amazing! The hedgehog is even sporting Link’s green tunic! Let’s just be happy that he doesn’t use a sword though. We know what happened the last time we tried that…

A new Sonic DLC was teased along with the Yoshi DLC that came out a few months ago, but to actually see it in action makes it seem like Sonic Team went above and beyond with the fan service with this one.

Do you still have your copy of Sonic: Lost World? Or is this enough incentive for you to pick it up? Of course, you’d actually need to buy a Wii U first. If you need help deciding, check out the trailer below and confirm how awesome this is in the comments!

A new Sonic game!? Who would’ve guessed?

Sega has announced Sonic Boom, an upcoming Wii U and 3DS title bringing Sonic and friends back into our living rooms. Details on game play are thin, but the trailer shows the gang speeding, climbing and fighting off enemies in a much larger world that comes off as more combat heavy than Sonic is used to being. But wait, what’s up with their look?

The elephant, (hedgehog?) in the room is the character redesigns. Amy and Tails look fantastic. Sonic? Ehhhh… But what the hell did they do to Knuckles!? I can’t wait to see Dr. Eggman brought back with 300 lbs of pure muscle. Either way, the game has been confirmed to be its own unique universe that will tie in to a new animated series and has no bearing on the core Sonic canon. The more Sonic the better as long as it’s done right I say.

Sonic Boom Screen 1Early images give a very Sonic Heroes vibe.

While the character design is sure to keep long time fans talking, the game play looks to be incredibly solid. The return of Sonic’s closest friends, (meaning NOT Cream, Silver and Big,) is looking to bring plenty of new possibilities considering each one displays their own abilities. With a new developer at the helm, Big Red Button has a chance to breathe fresh life into the series after much of its momentum was halted by the lukewarm reception to Sonic: Lost World.

For the first time in forever, everyone is talking about Sonic. There are still so many questions to be answered. Will any other characters be playable? Will there be simultaneous co op between multiple players? Will Sonic start a romantic relationship with a human girl again? All of these burning details and more will be revealed as we get closer to its eventual release, but until then, check out the debut trailer for the game AND the animated series below and let the speculation begin!

Joining Ralph in this new poster for the movie we have M. Bison, Q-Bert, Neff from Altered Beast), a ghost from Pac-man, Zanghief, Coily The Snake, Dr. Robotnik and Sonic The Hedgehog.

The bad-guy character Ralph, in the classic game Fix-It Felix Jr., who longs to be a hero brings trouble to his entire arcade after sneaking into a new first-person shooter game and unleashing a deadly enemy.

Wreck-It Ralph hits theaters on November 2nd!
