Free Comic Book Day is here, and what better way to celebrate than with, well… free comics?

Every year, publishers from across the spectrum provide samples and issues of some of their most popular properties as a way to celebrate the medium, (while hoping to hook a few new readers in the process). Viz is no different, as one of the lead manga publishers in the U.S. This year, the company behind the localization of hits such as Death NoteInuYasha and Dragon Ball Z, have not one, but two samples; one featuring Pokemon, and the other focusing on One Punch Man.

The Pokemon Pocket Comics issue serves as an introduction to the newest edition of the Pokemon manga library, that skews a little more to the kids, (or the kid in us). Containing three four-panel gag comic strips alongside a variety of quizzes and Pokemon statistics, the sample hopes to test your Pokemon prowess in between laughs.

Pokemon Free Comic Book Day 2016

The Shonen Jump Free Comic Book Day 2016 Sampler on the other hand, is all about action. Each copy contains excerpts from two of Jump’s currently running series, One-Punch Man and My Hero Academia. The former stars Saitama, an unassuming man who is part of a growing super hero community. He comes off as lazy, unmotivated and kind of dense, which stems from boredom since he has become so powerful, he has yet to find an opponent that he can’t defeat in one punch. Further along the super hero spectrum, My Hero Academia is set in a world where 80% of the population has a “Quirk”, or superpowers that has led to constant battles between heroes and villains. When you’re unsure of how to use your power however, this academy is where you go to learn how to use them. Yet, what happens when you’re one of the 20% that don’t have powers?

Both samples will be available while supplies last at one of the thousands of participating locations.

Before I read Assassination Classroom, I had actually seen part of the movie on my flight to Japan. At the time I thought, “What is this strange movie?” Then I noticed the face of the teacher, and realized I had seen that face before. What teacher you may ask? Well, there is an alien creature here on Earth and he is going to destroy the planet unless the students of class 3-E can assassinate him by the end of the school year.

assassination3

The students of class 3-E are not your typical kids. Their class is considered the reject class by the rest of the student body because you are sent there if you have poor grades or you cause trouble. Now, they are also assassins in training. The teacher, later named by the students as Koro Sensei, makes a deal with Earth’s leaders that he will not destroy the planet if these particular students can successfully assassinate him.

assassination2

As you can guess from the plot, there is tons of action in this series. The action scenes play well and you can see the fights unfold. There is actually a lot of humor as well. What the teacher says and how it interactions with the human students creates a lot of funny moments. The particular art style is a little on the cute side and is like Love Hina and Negima!

Where does this thing come from? Why does he want to destroy Earth? Why these kids? Will they be able to complete their task of assassinating the alien creature? If you’re looking for something with an intriguing plot, action and humor, you should check out Assassination Classroom. This is definitely a fun one!

Viz Media has announced that the iconic Japanese superhero sci-fi series, Ultraman, will make its return courtesy of a new Manga series.

Ultraman Manga Vol. 1

In case you’re unfamiliar with the series, Ultraman debuted in the late 1960’s and has since gained a worldwide audience. In Japan, the hero has become a cultural icon, triggering a pop culture phenomenon. After an ordinary human gained the power of the Giant of Light, an ordinary human gained the power to fight off giant monsters, or “kaiju”, that looked to destroy the Earth. The rest as they say, was history.

The manga series picks up years after the TV show ended. Following Shinjiro, an ordinary teenager who’s father happens to be the original Ultraman, the power that he inherits becomes the only thing that can stop a new threat, one that requires a new kind of hero.

Ultraman releases its first volume on August 18th in both physical and digital formats. Written by Eiichi Shimizu with artwork by Tomohiro Shimoguchi, the first book retails at $12.99.

Share your Ultraman fandom in the comments, and take a look at the full press release for all the details.

VIZ MEDIA LAUNCHES THE NEW ULTRAMAN MANGA SERIES

Kinetic Superhero Action Series Updates The Iconic Japanese

Sci-Fi Property For A Whole New Generation Of Manga Fans; Series To Launch In Print And Digitally

San Francisco, CA, August 11, 2015 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest publisher, distributor and licensor of manga and anime in North America, announces the brand new ULTRAMAN sci-fi superhero action manga (graphic novel) series, which is set to debut in print and digitally on August 18th.

The series, written by Eiichi Shimizu with artwork by Tomohiro Shimoguchi, is inspired by the original classic Japanese superhero TV show that ran in the late 1960s and remains hugely popular in Japan as well as with international audiences. ULTRAMAN Vol. 1 is rated ‘T’ for Teens and will carry a print MSRP of $12.99 U.S. / $14.99 CAN. The series also launches digitally the same day via VIZManga.com and the VIZ Manga App, as well as from the Nook, Kobo, Kindle, iBooks, comiXology, and GooglePlay stores. Future editions of ULTRAMAN will be published quarterly under the VIZ Signature imprint. In Japan, the series currently appears in Hero’s magazine.

Decades ago, a being known as the Giant of Light joined together with Shin Hayata of the Science Special Search Party to save Earth from an invasion of terrifying monsters called Kaiju. Now, many years later, those dark days are fading into memory, and the world is at peace. But in the shadows a new threat is growing, a danger that can only be faced by a new kind of hero – a new kind of ULTRAMAN… Shinjiro is an ordinary teenager, but his father is the legendary Shin Hayata. When he learns that his father passed on the “Ultraman Factor” to him and that he possesses incredible powers, nothing will ever be the same again.

VIZ Media recently welcomed Eiichi Shimizu and Tomohiro Shimoguchi for their first-ever professional appearance in the U.S. as official Guests of Honor at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con.

“In Japan, Ultraman is something of a national symbol, an iconic superhero that is instantly recognizable and universally loved, and we’re excited to bring the brand new manga to a new generation of fans,” says Mike Montesa, Editor. “The series wonderfully updates the classic sci-fi property with cinematic action sequences and sleek character designs. Catch the exciting return of this legendary hero this summer!”

Eiichi Shimizu worked on the story, script and mechanical design for ULTRAMAN. Tomohiro Shimoguchi provided character design and art. Together, the two have formed a creative dream team to produce a number of works including ULTRAMAN (Hero’s) and Kurogane no Rainbareru (Linebarrels of Iron, Akita Shoten). In addition to comics, they have expanded their field of interest to include character designs for video games and action figures.

Many manga readers dream of becoming manga artists. What does it take to make it as a mangaka (manga artist)? I spoke with the successful manga artist, Julietta Suzuki, about her career and what inspires her.

JuliettaSuzuki-CreatorOf-KamisamaKiss

Kamisama Hajimemashita © Julietta Suzuki 2008/HAKUSENSHA,Inc.

Q: How has your experience at Anime Expo been?
A: I just walked on the floor, quite a few people, a lot of cosplayers. It seems like there are a lot of visitors from all different countries and I felt the passion. It looks like a lot of fun.

Q: How does it feel to be a Guest of Honor with Viz Media?
A: I feel honored and very thankful.

Q: Whose artwork has inspired you?
A: Are you talking about manga?

Q: Yes.
A: Any genre? It doesn’t matter?

Q: Yeah, anything.
A: When I was a kid, I used to play an RPG game “Dragon Quest” and that inspired me a lot. I played a lot.

Q: Do you feel that your art style has changed over your career at all?
A: Yes, it has changed.

Q: What is your favorite thing to draw?
A: Stories – the human drama.

KamisamaKiss09-FrontCoverKeyArt

Kamisama Hajimemashita © Julietta Suzuki 2008/HAKUSENSHA,Inc.

Q: What do you find the hardest to draw?
A: I am supposed to finish like 30 pages in two weeks, so time is very tight. And within those 30 pages I will have to set up in that area what is exciting so I have to include that in the story and how to figure that out. How to figure out the structure is the hardest part.

Q: What advice do you have for aspiring manga artists?
A: In the States?

Q: Anywhere.
A: In Japan, it is actually not too hard to become a mangaka, but the difficulty is to continue drawing, but don’t be afraid. If you are inspired to become a mangaka, try to knock on the door and try to come to this world.

Q: What do you like about Shojo as a genre or a style?
A: The genre of Shojo manga basically revolves around human drama, so that is what I would like to draw. So, in general, I very much like to draw it.

Q: In terms of your work, what are you most proud of?
A: Right now, the current work is Kamisama Kiss / Kamisama Hajimemashita and so far we have got twelve volumes and drawing those volumes, I have learned quite a few lessons just by drawing them. Just the mere fact that I made it this far, I feel very proud of it.

Q: What is next for you?
A: With the next work I would like to try to target an even higher quality of work.

Vampire stories are pretty common nowadays. Many writers try to change it up or put a new spin on the genre. Seraph of the End takes place in a world where vampires have taken control. In a post-apocalyptic future, a mysterious illness kills everyone over the age of 12. Then the vampires appear and the remaining humans, mere children, flee underground. Young Yuichiro is determined to kill every vampire – they killed his sister and his best friend, and pushed humanity into the shadows. Will he be strong enough to fight back? Does humanity have any hope?

 seraph_of_the_end_by_suinomi-d82bgxs

I found this series rather interesting. It starts off with a young boy filled with just blind rage set to fight all vampires, but it expands when he meets a more organized force with the same mission. Yes, it is somewhat formulaic – unskilled youngster wants revenge, meets someone that teaches them how to fight and then the real battle begins. This version, however, still felt very intriguing. Seraph of the End has a similar vibe and art style to Blue Exorcist (which is an awesome series!).

If you like action, mystery, young people taking on the world and the supernatural, then check out Seraph of the End!

Now that Sailor Moon is neck deep in its revival, it’s time to wrap up season one with the final 26 episodes! As the remaining Sailor Guardians are discovered, their quest to find the Moon Princess they’ve been tasked to protect becomes even more urgent, as the Dark Kingdom zeroes in on the seven Rainbow Crystals. Whoever possesses these will obtain an immense power that not only threatens the heroes if they fall into the wrong hands, but may even draw a rift between the team and the mysterious Tuxedo Mask, who is after the crystals for his own ends. As the fight between our heroes and the Dark Kingdom draws to a close, this marks the first time that many of these episodes have been dubbed in their unedited form, serving as a true test as to whether or not the new cast can bring these crushing scenes to life. Now that the credits have rolled and the curtain has closed on the first full season, I’m happy to say that the team has nailed it!

More so than Part 1, which was mostly introductory and filler material, Part 2 takes no time in hurrying the story along, starting with Nephrite’s heartbreaking last stand. In between the introductions of Sailor Jupiter, the guardian of lightning and thunder, and Sailor Venus, the long teased original guardian, the team must fight off their latest threat in Zoisite. Perhaps the cruelest of the Dark Kingdom’s Four Kings, their chase after the reincarnated monsters that hold the Rainbow Crystals takes an unexpected turn when Tuxedo Mask begins claiming the crystals for himself! This struggle eventually leads to some shocking revelations, changing the dynamic between Sailor Moon and her team, with their uneasy allegiance with Tuxedo Mask, and a final battle against Queen Beryl, her right hand in Kunzite, and the ultimate evil in Queen Metalia. One threatens to leave the Sailor Guardians in shambles.

Of course, none of this would come off as great as it sounds if the voice acting didn’t follow through. Yet, whether it was Liam O’Brien’s emotional performance as Nephrite, Mars’ and Jupiter’s actors sounding almost exactly like the original 90’s voices with so much more material to work with, or the rest of the cast leaving their own stamp on such iconic characters, it didn’t take long for me to completely forget that I was listening to a new cast, and become completely absorbed in the world that they were bringing to life. Of course, the true test would come in the final few episodes, which have never aired in English before now without heavy edits. There’s no way that I’m spoiling it here, but if you’re a long time fan, know that these pivotal scenes were performed to near perfection, living up to the enormous task of establishing the emotional tone while completely selling me on Stephanie Sheh’s Usagi/Sailor Moon. Make no mistake about it; she’s the real deal!

YISfvq8

But with all the praise that I’m giving the new content, not all was perfect in the Moon Kingdom. Namely, the animation never felt like I was watching a remastered, high definition version. Considering that the animation is older, this can be mostly forgiven. However, if it wasn’t for the DVD being bundled with the Blu-Ray release, I wouldn’t see any reason to purchase it over the cheaper alternative if you just want the series.

Part of the aim with this new set is to bring a faithful version of the series to Western audiences, sticking to the Japanese version as close as possible. Yet, in the case of the episode titles, our friends in the East have a habit of giving away the plot in both the episode previews and in the titles themselves! I’ve watched these episodes multiple times, but if I was a new viewer, I’d hate to have the surprises ruined for me before I watch. On a side note, the eye catch, (or break between episode halves,) was awkward in Japanese, with its cringe worthy Sailor Moon cry. In English, it feels even more out of place. Personally, I could do without, but this will likely be an issue spanning the entire series since the original cuts keep them around.

As for the episodes themselves, there is still a fair amount of unnecessary content, some of which feels extremely out of character in certain cases. Namely, in Episode 43, the whole concept that the Sailor Guardians would double cross Sailor Moon was absurd, and even though the episode is fun if not taken too seriously, it’s hard to believe that both the Guardians AND the Dark Kingdom would fall for each other’s thinly veiled traps. Some moments are head scratching to say the least.

On that subject, Kunzite gets the short end of the stick in the worst way. Despite being the most powerful and most threatening of the Dark Kingdom, his entire arc consists of nearly all filler content, often feeling like an afterthought compared to not only his subordinates, but the allies he interacts with. Once he finally takes the stage in his only real battle, he’s so easily defeated, that it’s hard to understand why he was so hyped up to begin with. Still, the final moments and everything before were so strong, that it’s easy to forgive these underwhelming moments.

In addition to the main episodes, the set comes with some collectable cards with various artwork, and a series of special features that fully explore the revived Sailor Moon fandom. Including clips of the activities held on Sailor Moon Day at various conventions during the summer, fan interviews discussing their favorite memories of the series, and the full Anime Expo Sailor Moon panel, (much of which we covered as they were happening,) these bonuses served two purposes from what I can see. One, they helped people like me relive such a great time for longtime fans who were finally rewarded for their patience with this revival. Two, it allowed those who couldn’t make it to enjoy the festivities like those who were in attendance did! Outside of these sections, the standard clean opening and endings, trailers, and art galleries round out the extra content, all of which is worth a watch!

Cards

All in all, watching the first season has made me so excited for what the rest of the series will deliver. With so much never before released content in the West on the way, this will be a long term commitment, one that seems like it will be worth taking. Season One Part Two has set the bar high in terms of vocal quality, which has been boosted by the (mostly,) excellent story that it was framed around, and despite the dated visual quality, it delivers in almost every other way. Obviously, you might want to start with Part One, since this set starts at the end of a running storyline, but most of the most important developments are housed in Part Two, making it so much better for it. Plus, this set will fit nicely in that Part One Box Set with the gaping hole in the side! Whether you’re a new fan, or a longtime Moonie who still believes in the Guardians of Love and Justice, you can’t go wrong with this set!

After months of anticipation, Viz Media revealed the new Sailor Moon voice cast that will be working on the re-dub of the original series, and eventually, Sailor Moon Crystal.

Featuring a mix of veteran voice actors and some lesser known names, one thing is for sure; they’re going to have some huge shoes, (boots?) to fill. The cast list is as follows:

Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon- Stephanie Sheh

Ami Mizuno/Sailor Mercury- Kate Higgins

Rei Hino/Sailor Mars- Cristina Valenzuela

Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter- Amanda C Miller

Minako Aino/Sailor Venus- Cherami Leigh

Luna- Michelle Ruff

Artemis- Johnny Yong Bosch

Naru Osaka- Danielle Nicole

Gurio Umino- Ben Diskin

Queen Beryl- Cindy Robinson

Jadite- Todd Haberkorn

Nephrite- Liam O’Brien

Zoicite- Lucien Dodge

Kunzite- Patrick Seitz

Ikuki Tsukino- Tara Platt

Kenji Tsukino- Keith Silverstein

Shingo Tsukino- Nicolas Roye

Many of these names are definitely familiar, and I’m excited to see how each actor will portray their character. Only a few more months until we find out! Viz’s Sailor Moon re-release will be officially available for your consumption on November 11th. And remember, picking it up at rightstuf.com will net you an exclusive collectors coin while supplies last!

Ever since it was announced that all 200 plus episodes of Sailor Moon would be re-released and redubbed by a new cast, those who grew up on the mid 90’s classic were anxious to see how the new version would compare. Nearly 20 years of nostalgia coupled with a series so iconic means that no matter who Viz decided to give the roles to, they would have an uphill battle. The cast reveal was mostly a who’s who of voice actors, so the cast has the potential to meet our lofty expectations, but there’s no way to know until we can hear it for ourselves. Well, after being lucky enough to attend an exclusive pre screening of the first two episodes with the new cast, while it was definitely an adjustment, it looks like our beloved series is in good hands.

As soon as the familiar opening moments of Usagi waking up late for school began to play, we’re introduced to a much sweeter, (and less ditzy), sounding version of the titular character than we’re used to, courtesy of Stephanie Sheh. Throughout the first two episodes, Sheh portrays Usagi as a much more realistic character compared to the over the top comedy version we got from DiC. Watching it definitely gave me a different feel for the character compared to the days where I would wake up in my PJs to catch half an episode before being late to my 5th grade class, but different doesn’t necessarily mean bad. I’ll always appreciate the off-beat Serena I grew up with, but Serena this is not, which made the show stand out more from its predecessor than I expected.

On that subject, another adjustment that had to be made was keeping all of the Japanese names intact. While I’ve watched the series in both English and Japanese more times than I care to mention, it was still weird to see and hear certain aspects played out in English. Names like Naru, Umino and Shingo might be instantly recognizable to me now, but outside of the Japanese version, I’m used to Molly and Melvin myself. Other little things like Naru not having a New York accent while being from Tokyo, or Luna sounding more like a young woman than an older sage further helped the new dub stand out, and once again, giving it a unique feel without ever feeling like it could, (or even wanted to), replace the original dub.

Despite being mostly pleased with the handling of the new dub, there were a few aspects that were better off staying in the Japanese version exclusively. The eyecathes in between where would normally be commercials were awkward enough when the Japanese voices would shout, “SAILOR MOON!”, as if we didn’t know what show we were watching. But over time, it became tollerable. Now, Viz went through the trouble of redubbing THOSE sections too, making me sink into my chair a little bit each time. Back to square one, I guess.

And while it’s early to tell how well each actor will do with their role, since it often takes a few episodes for some to really get into their character, I just couldn’t stand Umino’s voice. Played by the very talented Ben Diskin, I know he has the acting chops, but that super nasily voice he speaks with when voicing the school nerd is just too much. When we got into episode 2, (which has never before been dubbed since it’s essentially the sexual harassment episode), this Umino focused story just felt cringeworthy. Hopefully, future ADR direction will help the character find a balance of being annoying as intended, but not so much so that I feel awkward watching. And while I won’t focus on it too much since he only had two lines, Usagi’s kid brother, Shingo, sounds older than their dad. Either he’s been hitting the testosterone shots of this should probably be adjusted down the road.

Regardless of any unpleasing moments, anyone who was concerned about how Viz was going to handle dubbing Sailor Moon won’t have to worry anymore. Wisely taking a completely different approach with how some of the characters are portrayed, it manages to remain a faithful English adaptation of the original series without ever trying to encroach on our memories of the original version that we all fell in love with in the first place. There are some obvious growing pains in certain areas, but as more characters are introduced, more story arcs are played out and more time passes to improve, Viz’s version just might deliver the complete Sailor Moon experience that we’ve never had the chance to watch in English.

Check out Viz’s first promotional teaser below and tell us what you think! The first box set is scheduled for a November 11th release date, and pre orders at rightstuf.com will receive an exclusive collectors coin while supplies last.

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aPMh2ZZOCzI

Since it was announced a few months back that Viz would be re-dubbing and re-releasing the entire Sailor Moon series after winning a years long bidding war for the licensing rights, Moonies have been patiently waiting for more details on when the episodes would start rolling out. Based on Viz’s Anime Expo announcement, it looks like Christmas will be a very happy time for lovers of all things magical girl.

Releasing on November 11th, the first box set will be episodes 1-23 of the first season as a double pack, spanning three DVDs and three Blu-Rays in a two sided case. In addition, each box will include an 88 page color art book, a double sized box to hold the second half when it hits shelves and art work on the back that will line up with all subsequent boxes, making a full image when season five is eventually released. If that wasn’t enough cool stuff to throw in, early preorders at rightstuf.com will come with an exclusive collectors coin while supplies last, (which will also fit in the box for those completionists out there). The price? A low, low 79.98, and I mean that will all the sarcasm I can muster.

It’s great to finally know when we can start throwing money at this thing, especially when you consider that numerous episodes, (including the entirety of the final season, Sailor Stars), have never been dubbed, or even released in the West. On the other hand, if each half season is going to be $80, there are going to be a TON of broke anime watchers in the next year or two.

Will you be picking up any of these releases? Do all the extras make it too hard to pass up, or will you wait until the final box is released? And are you anxious to find out when we’re getting dubbed Sailor Moon Crystal!?

This weekend was a great time to be an anime fan.

After a bidding war that has spanned the years since ADV left the anime distribution business, companies have been fighting for the right to bring the classic anime, Sailor Moon, to our shores once again. Right off the heels of the first details of the highly anticipated reboot, Sailor Moon Crystal, Viz has finally come out on top, reaching a deal that will not only bring us the new series both dubbed and subtitled, but will also revive the original series in its entirety, including the three movies and the never before released Sailor Stars series finale!

If that wasn’t exciting enough, starting Monday, May 19th, episodes of the original series will begin airing on Hulu in their subtitled form, starting with the first four episodes. Two new episodes released weekly, with half season DVD/Blu Ray sets scheduled for the fall, with brand new dubs following in the coming months completely unedited, (although it’s unclear of the dubs will be part of the box set). If you always wanted to watch the version of the series where the Sailor Scouts, (Senshi?) don’t mysteriously leave the final battle of season one for no reason, where Sailor Uranus and Neptune aren’t actually cousins or where the villainous Zoicite is still a dude, you might want to sign up for a subscription.

Plus, whoever thought we would see Star Gentle Uterus in English? Yes, that’s a thing.

For nostalgia freaks and Otaku alike, this is an exciting time to carry the Sailor Moon banner. What do you expect from the coming months? And will you say goodbye to any resemblance of a social life you had to watch the series in its entirety? Continue the conversation below!

The Haikasoru imprint has also announced the May 6th release of the ALL YOU NEED IS KILL official graphic novel adaptation. Written by Haikasoru editor and noted sci-fi author, Nick Mamatas, and featuring full-color artwork by popular comic book artist Lee Ferguson (Green Arrow, Miranda Mercury), the new graphic novel offers a single-volume retelling of the original ALL YOU NEED IS KILL novel that inspired the EDGE OF TOMORROW movie. The graphic novel carries an MSRP of $14.99 U.S. / $17.99 CAN, and features an oversized North American graphic novel trim size of 6 5/8″ x 10 ¼”. An eBook edition will also be available worldwide for $8.99 (U.S. / CAN) for the Amazon Kindle, Apple’s iBooks Store, Barnes & Noble’s Nook Book Store, and the Kobo eBooks Store. The Edge of Tomorrow feature film is scheduled to be released from Warner Bros. Pictures on June 6th  in 3D, 3D IMAX and regular 2D. The film is directed by Doug Liman and stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton.

The story is set in the future when aliens called Mimics invade. Keiji Kiriya is just one of many recruits shoved into a suit of battle armor called a Jacket and sent out to kill. But he dies on the battlefield after only a few minutes, only to be reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. On his 158th iteration, he gets a message from a mysterious ally – the female soldier known as the Full Metal Bitch. Is she the key to Keiji’s escape or his final death?

In 2009, ALL YOU NEED IS KILL served as the launch title for Haikasoru, a unique imprint developed by VIZ Media dedicated to publishing the most compelling contemporary Japanese science fiction and fantasy for English-speaking audiences. New York Times best-selling author John Scalzi declared ALL YOU NEED IS KILL to be a novel that, “reads fast, kicks ass, and keeps on coming,” and it has proven to be one of Haikasoru’s most popular titles. Sakurazaka’s other novels include Characters (co-written with Hiroki Azuma) and SLUM ONLINE, which was published in English by Haikasoru in 2010.

“Live…die…repeat. ALL YOU NEED IS KILL / EDGE OF TOMORROW delivers a nightmarish, action-packed spin on reliving one’s own triumphs, and failures,” says Nick Mamatas, Editor, Haikasoru. “Catch the original story that inspired the gripping movie with the official movie tie-in edition and in the Western comic book mode with the ALL YOU NEED IS KILL official graphic novel. Both of these debuts are perfect reads leading up to the highly anticipated theatrical debut of Edge of Tomorrow this summer!”

“The ALL YOU NEED TO KILL graphic novel stays very true to the original source novel,” says Joel Enos, editor for the new comic. “We made a conscious effort to create something unique that could stand on it’s own away from both the original novel, the film and the upcoming manga, but would nicely complement and pay respects to all three! Lee’s retro-futuristic art style especially puts ALL YOU NEED TO KILL as a comic into it’s own orbit!”

Want passion, mythology and demons? Then you need to check out Black Bird by Kanoko Sakurakouji. There is a whole world of demons and spirits that intersects ours but only a few can see it. Young Misao Harada can, and not only that, she is the Senka Maiden! If a demon drinks her blood they will become more powerful, if they eat her flesh they will become immortal, and if they marry her their clan will thrive. Suddenly a handsome and mysterious man, Kyo, comes into Misao’s life and apparently they knew each other as children. Well, it turns out that Kyo is also a demon, and not just any demon, he is the head of the Tengu (bird demon) clan! Is Kyo the same as Misao remembers? Does he want her for his bride? Does he have sinister motives? Or does he really love Misao? What’s a sixteen year old girl to do?!

blackbird2

 blackbird6

I have enjoyed reading this title. The art is a bit different than I have seen before. The characters have wider faces than typical anime/manga characters. Kyo especially has a wide face (narrow oval eyes that are wide and a wide mouth). It is like his face has been pulled to the sides, yet he is still good looking. Misao has HUGE round eyes that add to her childlike personality. Also, everyone’s pupils have this scribble/scratchy look that gives them all a dream-like quality. There are lots of detailed patterns on the clothing which gives artwork a sense of realism. Emotions are a big part of Shojo manga and they are expressed nicely in this series. They range from a sly smirk to over the top, but it all comes across as believable.

blackbird5

 blackbird4

The story is engaging and the characters are likeable. However, it flickers across the line between sexy and slightly uncomfortable. For example: Misao is a typical teenager who falls madly in love with Kyo and there are jokes about his advances that are playful but it is clear Misao is not thrilled with his forwardness most of the time. Then the story redeems itself by having Kyo tell Misao he does not want to pressure her into sex and will wait until she is ready. Their cuddling and kissing is super romantic and you just want them to be together. Also, you should not be bothered by blood because there is a bit of violence and Misao is constantly tormented by smaller demons in the beginning. As the Senka Maiden, Misao is occasionally kidnapped and held prisoner which presents a sort of BDSM situation (one situation is particularly graphic). Be warned: Misao cries a lot! This makes most of the scenarios a lot less sexy or just awkward. Even with all of that, I thoroughly enjoy reading the intense romance between Kyo and Misao and I enjoy the series pushing the limits.

blackbird7

blackbird3

Currently I am almost done with volume 5 and plan to finish the series. One other thing the series has going for it is there is a lot of humor which helps lighten the mood. Black Bird captures the passion of young love and explores different kinds of relationships that make Shojo manga so enjoyable to read!

Remember you first crush? How old were you? Did you make a promise to your special someone? Well, that is what Raku Ichijo did in Nisekoi (False Love) by Naoshi Komi. He is the heir of a yakuza clan and ten years ago he made a promise to his childhood sweetheart. She gave him a lock pendent, she kept the key, and they promised to get married when they meet again as grownups. Now, Raku is in high school and still believes he will meet her again but he has forgotten her name and what she looks like! Things get complicated when a new girl, Chitoge Kirisaki, transfers to Raku’s school. Immediately the two fight over EVERYTHING! It turns out she is the daughter to a rival gang and in order to keep the peace, Raku’s father and Chitoge’s father implore the two to date. Both kids can think of nothing worse but soon realize that their fake love might really be the only way to stop the gangs from fighting each other.

Volume 1 is full of action, extreme emotions (it is high school after all) and the romance is fun to read. Will Raku fall for the brute Chitoge? Will Onodera (the girl Raku actually has a crush on) turn out to be the locket girl? I am actually kind of torn between the two girls and who I want to end up with Raku which goes to show how well written the love story is. The art style shows off the emotions and action sequences well with expressive facial expressions and lots of lines to show the tension and movement.

At first, I thought the potential love plot line between Raku and Chitoge would be cliché, but Komi has pulled me in. The characters have depth and you really want to know what happens to them. You will have to check out volume 1 to find out what happens! I will be on the look out for volume 2!

Volume 1 is currently available for $9.99.

Nisekoi, Volumes 1-6 are also available for digital download for $6.99 each on VIZManga.com and through the VIZ MANGA App for the Apple iPad®, iPhone® and iPod® touch, Android-powered smart phones, and also for NOOK, KOBO, and KINDLE tablets and devices.

Hi! My name is Kari Lane, and I’ve been an anime lover since I was a little girl. Those good old days when classics like Sailor MoonDragon Ball/Dragon Ball ZCard Captor SakuraDigimon and Monster Rancher were on the most basic of cable.

Over the years, I have expanded my anime repertoire and have attended numerous anime conventions. I’m currently a host on Neo-Cinema, a web-based anime and Japanese live-action movie review show. Recently, I’ve been watching the first few episodes of various anime series’, and thought it an excellent idea to write reviews based on my “first impressions”. Of course, you’ll have many unanswered questions after viewing just 4, 5, or 6 episodes, but you can get a feel for the show and decide if you want to continue watching! I hope my reviews will help introduce you to some awesome anime, or help you avoid the more mediocre junk that’s out there!

I heard about Accel World at Anime Expo 2013 and was reminded about it with the recent press release announcing season 1 was available for purchase. It looked like a cool show and it did not disappoint. This was a show where I blazed through season 1 in one day (12 episodes). The episode structure flows from one to the next and you just want to know what happens next.

accel6

accel7

Accel World is set in the near future where everyone has a neuro-link to manage anything and everything in their daily lives; it is networking and Google Glass to an extreme. The main character, Haruyuki “Haru” Arita, is a short fat boy who is constantly bullied and finds his only escape from the harshness of reality in virtual reality games. In the virtual world, he feels he can be the best he can be and not be tormented for being a little different. It is funny though because he chose a cute little pig as his avatar. While in the Sims-like virtual world, Haru is approached by the beautiful and super popular student counsel Vice-President, Kuroyukihime, who asks him to meet her in the real world! They directly link into each other (a thing only couples do!!!) and Kuroyukihime invites him to try Brain Burst and enter an accelerated world.

accel9

The virtual reality environment of Accel World is primarily a fighting game but what makes it addictive is in the real world you can essentially “freeze time”. Time does not stop but rather you are able to process the situation faster and are able to step out of your body to fully understand your surroundings. Kuroyukihime explains that people use this to their advantage for fame, power, money, whatever you can think of. How many times you can “brain burst” is determined by how many points you have and the only way to gain points is to battle in Accel World. Time in Accel World is accelerated such that you could be in the game for a year and only a day will pass in the real world.

The concept and art style are similar to Sword Art Online (another really good show), but the shows are also very different. Accel World has a good amount of humor, some of which arises from Haru’s awkward interactions with girls. Though there is a lot of cool battles/fight scenes, at its heart Accel World is about relationships (friends, family, mentor-protégé, boyfriend-girlfriend, and more). Through the course of the season, the relationships between characters are explored and go through their ups and downs. Also, the show is about getting past your own insecurities and not letting anything hold you back.

accel5

Why did Kuroyukihime recruit Haru? Will Haru be able to stay friends with his childhood companions? Who is the real enemy in Accel World? If want a cool action/sci-fi type of show you should check this one out! I look forward to season 2 to see where our hero and friends go next!

I have read manga for many years but only recently started reading yaoi (see SuBLime interview for more info). I enjoy the emphasis on relationships, especially the ooey gooey romantic stuff, and yes, I enjoy reading the sexy time parts. One of the first titles I read was Spiritual Police by Youka Nitta.

spiritualpolice2

Police officer, Nagatsuma, visits a special massage therapist on the recommendation from one of his senior detectives. Nagatsuma is good at his job but he is too empathic and the harshness of his job puts stress on his overall well being. He is skeptical of the treatment at first but soon realizes masseur, Aoi (who is blind), not only mends bodily ailments but also taps into something greater. It seems that with his blindness, Aoi has gained another kind of sight – a sight into the future. Aoi warns Nagatsuma of some impending danger and this just makes Nagatsuma more curious (and apprehensive) about this beautiful man.

Aoi is a person who “sees” beyond one’s sex and Nagatsuma is blindsided by his developing feelings for Aoi. Other characters mention how attractive Aoi is and one even says, “The doc there’s so pretty it’s a pity he’s a guy, don’tcha think”? Another interesting example of gender switch ups is occurs when a character thinks to himself about Nagatsuma, “What kind of man is he? He’s a woman…” Yaoi is a genre where gender roles can be expressed in various ways. The relationship between Nagatsuma and Aoi progresses rather naturally with Nagatsuma giving in and slowly embracing this new kind of relationship. Unfortunately, towards the end of volume 1, a conflict comes up and Nagatsuma instead of asking Aoi what is going on he does something rather frustrating. I did not care for that part of the story but enjoyed the rest enough to overlook that segment.

The art style depicts emotional moments well with many blush lines, expressive eyes, and movement indicators (lines, light bursts, etc). The characters/environments are drawn/shadowed/textured well and reflect the one of the more common styles of manga/anime. Yes, the men are nice to look at and have gorgeous hair and slender bodies. The private parts are mostly whited out, but you can still tell the shape and what is going on. I did find a few of the dialogue boxes hard to follow, but each character has their own style of speaking so it was not too disruptive to my reading.

This volume peaks your interest when it introduces a mysterious organization (possibly evil) that wants to keep Aoi prisoner and use his powers for their own benefit. Will Aoi be able to escape? Will Aoi and Nagatsuma be reunited? I enjoyed the extra element of the psychic abilities, and the developing mystery and I am excited to read what happens next!

Spiritual Police is rated ‘M’ for Mature Readers, and retails for $12.99.

Yaoi is an interesting genre because it is part of the anime community but is often misunderstood by those unfamiliar with it. I always noticed the loud (they did a good job at getting your attention) and colorful yaoi booths at anime conventions but never understood the appeal. Then I watched Brokeback Mountain with my friend, and she and I swooned over the romantic relationship between the two male leads. Ah! I finally understood why this genre was so popular with the ladies (and boys). Curious to know more? Well, I was able to interview SubLime editor Jennifer LeBlanc. Read on to get an in depth perspective on all things yaoi!

Can you explain what yaoi is for the benefit of those who may have never heard of it?

The definition of yaoi varies depending on whom you ask, but what most people understand it to be is stories written by women about two men in a romantic relationship, and they are written with a female audience in mind. That’s not to say that men don’t read yaoi, just that the target audience is women.

What do you think the draw of this genre is, and why do you think women love it so much?

Women read yaoi for a myriad of reasons, more reasons than we have space for here. There’s the lingering misconception that women aren’t sexual beings who like to explore their sexuality. They are and they do. Yaoi is one of those things that allow women to do this in a safe environment. They can share their love of the genre with other women in the fandom without being judged for it, or being told that because they’re women they shouldn’t like this kind of material.

In most yaoi, the men are beautiful and often one of them is the “female” (and they can look more feminine too) in the relationship, would you still consider those stories about gay relationships?

They’re about gay relationships to the extent that the characters are both men and are living their lives as men, even if one is portrayed with more feminine attributes. In real-life gay relationships, one man could choose to have a more feminine look or affect, or a more masculine one; it doesn’t make him more or less gay. That said, realism isn’t the main focus of these stories, any more than it is with other romance genres.  In most yaoi stories, traditionally defined gender roles and depictions are deliberately broken.

What you would say to people who think yaoi is just hentai? How would you say the two are different/similar?

Well, that’s kind of like saying gay sex is just straight sex. At their core, yes, hentai and yaoi are both erotic material. However, how each is presented, what they’re about, and who they’re for just aren’t the same. There is some crossover as far as the audience for both, but generally the audience for each is simply not the same. If yaoi was just hentai, we’d have a much larger male demographic.

How much is lost in translation when a title is converted from Japanese to English?

Our goal as a publisher is to not lose anything in translation, so we look to hire the best translators we can who have an excellent grasp of the Japanese and English languages. Sometimes there may be jokes in a story that won’t make sense to readers not familiar with Japanese culture. In those instances we may adapt the joke for English readers, or instead leave it as is with a side explanation.

How did you get into reading yaoi?

My curiosity got the better of me. I was already a fan of anime and had heard there was anime porn (hentai) that existed. I kind of didn’t believe it, so off to Google I went, and that’s how I found yaoi. It didn’t take long to find out that there were books with the material in it as well.

What are some of your favorite titles?

Well, my first favorite when I found out yaoi existed was Ayano Yamane’s Viewfinder (now called Finder). That will always be a favorite of mine. Currently, I am absolutely in love with the series Blue Morning by Shoko Hidaka.

How did you get into working with yaoi as a job?

When I first got into yaoi, I was having a hard time finding the stories I wanted to read (hard yaoi). There weren’t any reviews that told me what I wanted to know—Is there sex in the story and if so, how explicit is it? I decided to start my own yaoi review site that specialized in hard yaoi, The Yaoi Review. After running it for a few years, VIZ suddenly posted a position for a yaoi editor. I had no intention of applying, but a few industry people and also readers of my site prodded me about applying, and here I am.

Created by Masashi Kishimoto, NARUTO was first introduced in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in Japan in 1999 and quickly became that country’s most popular ninja manga properties. The manga series (rated ‘T’ for Teens, in print and digital editions) and animated counterpart (NARUTO and NARUTO SHIPPUDEN rated ‘TV-14’) are some of VIZ Media’s most successful titles and have captivated millions of fans across North America, Europe and South America.

In the NARUTO manga and animated series, Naruto Uzumaki wants to be the best ninja in the land. He’s done well so far, but Naruto knows he must train harder than ever and leaves his village for intense exercises that will push him to his limits. NARUTO SHIPPUDEN begins two and a half years later, when Naruto returns to find that everyone has been promoted up the ninja ranks – except him. Sakura’s a medic ninja, Gaara’s advanced to Kazekage, and Kakashi…well he remains the same. But pride isn’t necessarily becoming of a ninja, especially when Naruto realizes that Sasuke never returned from his search for Orochimaru. Plus, the mysterious Akatsuki organization is still an ever-present danger. As Naruto finds out more about the Akatsuki’s goals, he realizes that nothing in his universe is as it seems. Naruto is finding that he’s older, but will he also prove wiser and stronger?

Most everyone loves Christmas. Now, how about a manga centered around Santa, but this time Santa is a cute seventeen year old girl and her reindeer is her servant? Oh, and he is really cute! Sweet Rein v.1 opens with young Kurumi Sagara, who is about to spend Chistmas alone until she bumps into a handsome young guy named Kaito (who happens to be a magical reindeer!). An invisible (to humans) reign connects them to each other and Kaito tells Kurumi she is his master because she is now Santa Claus.

This manga has all the adorable/cutesy/ romantic bits you want in a shojo manga (manga mainly targeted toward 10-18 year old girls with a primary focus on relationships). I loved it! It is sweet, funny and has heart! You might even say it borders on cheesy but I enjoyed every second of it. The bond between these two characters is explored and not just taken for granted. Kurumi even asks, ” Aren’t you upset to lose your freedom?” She does not accept the whole master and servant relationship (at first) and I like that the author has the character ask questions I would have wanted answered.

Actually, the relationship between Kurumi and Kaito kind of reminds me of the relationship between Haruhi and Tamaki in Ouran High School Host Club. It is refreshing that Kurumi speaks her mind and does not swoon all over Kaito; he is the one doing the swooning. The art style is a little similar to Ouran High School Host Club too with its pretty characters, their wispy hair blowing in the wind and the super expressive moments where you know exactly how these 2D characters are feeling. The author/artist, Sakura Tsukuba, did an excellent job of conveying movement and expression and you almost see the scene move as you read it.

Yes, the plot is a little strange but what manga/anime isn’t? Sweet Rein is a delightful read that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and gush over the romantic moments. If you like romantic stories or just want something playful to read, you should check this one out!

Sweet Rein is available starting 11/5 with VIZ Media’s November releases and will be retailing for $9.99. Cute holiday gift idea; just saying. Plus there is a vampire bonus short story at the end!

It wasn’t just a matter of if, but when the next film in the Naruto franchise would be released in the West. But for those few who might have doubted it, rest assured. Naruto Shippuden: The Lost Tower is headed to DVD and Blu Ray combo pack on September 17th.

The Lost Tower involves Naruto chasing a deadly new foe, one unlike he’s ever seen before aside from every movie villain before this one. But unlike enemies of old, this fight will see Naruto sent back in time where he meets Minato Namikaze, the man who would become the legendary 4th Hokage. Hmm, the only other dark blonde character in the entire world. I wonder if they’re related…

Keep your eyes peeled for the film’s release, which is sure to hit Viz’s streaming service, Neon Alley, shortly before the release date. But until then, we’ll just have to wait and see how Naruto avoids shattering the space time continuum or preventing his own birth fully English dubbed. Any Naruto fans out there excited? Watch the trailer below and get hyped! Believe it!
