While I’ve longed respected the career work of Pan’s Labyrinth director, Guillermo del Toro, somehow his films have always failed to resonate with me. But after catching an early screening for the filmmaker’s new Oscar-bound fantasy-romance, The Shape of Water, those sentiments no longer ring true. Welcome to my heart, Mr. del Toro.

Set during the early 60s, in the midst of America’s tenuous Cold War with the Soviet Union, Sally Hawkins stars as Elisa, a mute cleaning lady who works alongside her chatty friend Zelda (Octavia Spencer) in a high-security government laboratory. Caught in the monotony of her safe and low-key daily routine, Elisa stumbles across a new living and breathing “asset” that’s been brought to the facility where she cleans. And as Elisa sneaks behind the backs of everyone in the lab to forge a deep-rooted connection with the beast, she also learns of a sinister government agent’s (Michael Shannon) plan to terminate the creature.

Often referred to as a master of storytelling, Guillermo del Toro  establishes a daring tale of romance that hurdles the traditional love story. But even more absorbing than the magical fantasy he creates, it’s Sally Hawkins who steals the spotlight with an absolutely majestic performance, one that could very well top my annual list for lead actresses. Her work doesn’t grab you with a loud and verbal demanding of your attention like awards season rival Margot Robbie in I, Tonya. Instead Hawkins lures the viewer using an earnest and wholesome charm that feels so sadly unfamiliar nowadays. She tap-dances her way into your heart and catapults an odd and profound romantic affair that straddles the line between derivative and innovative remarkably well. The Shape of Water also comes with a wide range of engaging subplots and co-starring talent. While my personal taste navigates a preference towards the supporting work of Richard Jenkins and Octavia Spencer, both Michael Shannon and Michael Stuhlbarg prove invaluable to the film as well. Any of them are fair game for awards season success, further validating how well-rounded of a movie del Toro has created. Everything from Alexandre Desplat’s enchanting score to del Toro’s sleek and calculated direction, there’s hardly a blemish to be found. The Shape of Water is beautifully filmed, superbly acted, boldly told and without a doubt my favorite film of 2017 so far.

Briefly: Boy do I ever need to catch up on The Strain.

FX has just debuted the trailer for the upcoming season, and it looks just as tense, terrifying, and fabulous as every episode that I’ve seen thus far.

As season three begins, New York City is a battleground. Written off by the federal government, the people of New York City must fight for survival on their own. The question is who will win? Humans or strigoi? Our heroes win victories, but are not winning the war. Beset by personal conflicts – betrayal, disappointment, paranoia – our group is splintering. Meanwhile, the Master is close to executing an irreversible transformation of the world. Is there still hope to save the city and humanity?

Season 3 is set to premiere on August 28th. Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Contrary to previous reports, the apocalypse hasn’t been canceled.

According to Deadline, Legendary Pictures has not only given the green light for Pacific Rim 2, a sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 mecha movie but it’s also signed on Steven S. DeKnight to direct with a script by Jon Spaihts (PrometheusDoctor Strange). DeKnight is best known for creating Spartacus which aired on Starz from 2010 until 2013. He recently produced Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix.

The news that there’s a Pacific Rim 2 at all is news to fans of the original film. The original film underperformed at the domestic box office but smashed records overseas, but it wasn’t enough for Warner Bros. and Legendary to immediately pursue a sequel. There were additional reports of Legendary shifting focus to build a monster movie universe involving King Kong and Godzilla, which would have somehow left Pacific Rim out of the equation. But it doesn’t matter now, because Pacific Rim 2 is on the way.

A cast has not yet been announced.

Fresh outta Konami, and firing up his own company , video game legend Hideo Kojima will finally be accepting an award he is deserving of. No Konami lawyers getting in the way this time!

Hideo Kojima, creator of the Metal Gear franchise, will be the 21st member inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences. Presenting the award to the game designer will be his new best bud, Guillermo del Toro.

The Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences is thrilled to induct Hideo Kojima, world-renowned game creator and auteur, as the 21st member to its Hall of Fame. Kojima is recognized for the best-selling Metal Gear series, widely considered the father of the stealth game genre, and credited with innovating story-telling and cinematic presentation in video games at large. The Metal Gear Solid series has received numerous D.I.C.E. Awards nominations throughout the years.

The 2015 Hall of Fame Award will be presented to Kojima during the 19th D.I.C.E. Awards ceremony on Thursday, February 18, 2016, at the Mandalay Convention Center in Las Vegas by film director, screenwriter, producer and novelist Guillermo del Toro.

Kojima began his career in videogames in 1986 as a designer and planner for Konami’s MSX home computer division. He set the trend for stealth action games with Metal Gear and pushed the boundaries of video game storytelling, cinematic cut scenes, and mature content with Snatcher. In 1990, Kojima was involved in Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, which gave the player more abilities, such as crouching, crawling, distracting guards, and using radar –all further developing the stealth game genre. With the release of Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation in 1998, Kojima became a video game living legend internationally. The game was the first in the series to port a cinematic feel through 3D graphics and voice acting.

This is absolutely amazing news. After all the controversy with him and Konami, especially after the blockage at the recent Video Game Awards, it’s great to see Kojima finally making a public appearance and accepting an award that he rightfully deserves.

With his partner in the now defunct Silent Hills project, Guillermo del Toro, presenting the award speculation and rumors are already flying. Will they announce a new project? Will they announce something in regards to Silent Hills being revived? We will all have to wait and see.

For more information on the awards, and how you can attend, check out the official website HERE.

Briefly: I’ve been itching to re-watch Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak since the very moment that the credits started rolling during my screening. The film shows off depth and beauty like only a Del Toro picture can, and the film’s unfortunate theatrical marketing had many moviegoers ignore the film as it simply looked like a B-horror film.

It’s not a horror at all, and it’s one of my favourite films of 2015. Jonathan and I talked about the film on Geekscape back in September, and I can’t wait to watch it again when it hits Blu-Ray on February 9th.

I’m a sucker for special features, and the Crimson Peak Blu-Ray won’t disappoint in that department, either. Here are the Blu-Ray exclusive features:

-I Remember Crimson Peak: A series of interviews with director Guillermo del Toro and his standout cast, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain.

-A Living Thing: An army of artisans was amassed to construct the Sharpe mansion on North America’s largest soundstage. Witness first-hand and in great detail the construction of Del Toro’s most elaborate set to date.

-A Primer on Gothic Romance: Employing his encyclopedic knowledge and passion for the genre, Guillermo del Toro traces the lineage of Gothic Romance in cinema. Using Crimson Peak as the basis, Del Toro outlines the history of cinematic terror and illuminates the differences between traditional scares and elevated horror.

-Crimson Phantoms: Del Toro’s approach to make-up effects is discussed by award-winning effects house DDT. In this piece, they offer an exclusive look inside their workshop, where they deconstruct the creation of the film’s most disturbing prosthetic effects. The discussion delves into the mythology of these elegant creatures and how Del Toro’s belief in the supernatural informed the design and narrative of the ghosts

-Hand Tailored Gothic: Costume designer Kate Hawley unravels her collaboration with Del Toro and reveals the symbolism constantly at play in the wardrobe’s design.

And the features that will be found on the DVD and Blu-Ray:

-Deleted Scenes

-The Light and Dark of Crimson Peak: Crimson Peak offers a stylized turn of the century with carefully crafted visuals that provide the perfect backdrop for Del Toro’s brand of psychological horror. Follow the phases of production to discover a booming America and a dark and removed England portrayed with a multi-layered sophistication unlike any seen in recent cinema.

-Beware Of Crimson Peak: Tom Hiddleston (Sir Thomas Sharpe) offers a walking tour of the many secret spaces in Allerdale Hall.

-Feature Commentary with co-writer and Director Guillermo Del Toro

Del Toro’s films are always ripe with amazing symbolism, and I cannot wait to hear what he has to say on the film’s commentary track.

Re-watch the Crimson Peak trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the release!

Pacific Rim rocked. In a better world it would have been a cultural phenomenon, but as it stands it’s one of those things that was too cool for the rest of the world to get (although China loved the shit out of it).

No self-respecting geek should pass up Pacific Rim, and Joshua Fialkov, the multi-time Harvey Award nominee, is relishing his chance to write the new Pacific Rim comic series Tales from the Drift, out now on Legendary’s comic imprint.

Over a week ago, I had the chance to catch up with Joshua about his influences, Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham’s input, and one strange element he’s adding to the Pacific Rim mythos: Love.

What excites you about Pacific Rim personally?

Fialkov: I love it for a bunch of reasons. The main thing is I’m 36 years old, and it hit so many of the “love buttons” from my childhood. I loved Godzilla as a kid, I loved Ultraman as a kid, I loved manga and anime. I grew up with as much of that stuff as I did American comics, if not more.

I did too.

Fialkov: The one that I always remember is there was an anime and a manga series called Gunbuster. Remember that thing?

Yeah, actually.

Fialkov: It’s like a battle school and they’re training, it’s about teenage girls training to operate these fighting… essentially they’re like little versions of the Jaegers. So, I love all the stuff. What it does for beyond that is it hits all those buttons and it mashes them up into something wholly original and wholly different, while at the same time it’s also providing commentary on our world. What I like about it and what I tried to bring in for the comic book was the idea of humanity, of humanism. Because Pacific Rim is really a story, about what mankind can do as a species.

Contrary to what people will say, contrary to politics and to wisdom, it’s really a story about how we as a species can team up and make something greater than ourselves. And it’s done both literally, in terms of everyone building the Jaegers, but then even specifically when you have the two pilots drifting together. When they’re interfacing, they’re creating something bigger and better than themselves. Something that neither of them could do individually that they actually need each other to do. And that speaks to the very core of who we are as people.

Because the truth is, none of us are an island. Everyone needs the people around them. And all of us, whether we want to admit it or not, none of us want to be alone.

Even Batman needs help sometimes, right?

Fialkov: That’s true, and sure, he gets a lot of Robins killed, but you know, can you blame him?

Of course.

Fialkov: It really is right, that type of humanity is the thing that really stuck with me, and it’s also what so much of what Tales from the Drift is about because you have as sort of the central conflict, you have these two Jaeger pilots who are in love, and they have become a unit. They are in love in a way that no one in the real world can actually be. They know every single thing about each other. So I thought the idea of telling a story that starts with we see where we’re going, we see that eventually they’re going to become this well oiled machine, but when they first meet they just absolutely hate each other.

And getting to play out those two things, getting to play out how they made the moves to get to the point where they don’t just love each other, they trust each other implicitly seemed like such a fun thing to do. You’re really telling the story of a romantic comedy, you’re just dressing it up in the clothes of giant robots and giant monsters.

I would certainly watch more romantic comedies if they all had giant monsters and giant robots.

Fialkov: Right?

You’re saying something big about the story right now. What can you tell me about your comic, especially since this isn’t the first time Pacific Rim is hitting comic book shelves. You’re talking about love. What can you elaborate about that?

Fialkov: Even though there have been other comics, everything that we do is designed so you can read it entirely on it’s own. So if you haven’t seen the movie, though it’d be weird that you’re reading this, but if you haven’t seen the movie and you’re interested in just seeing what Pacific Rim is all about you can just pick up the comic.

If you have seen the movie, or if you have read the other comics or the other books, they’re all built to be part of one kind of bigger story so they enhance each other and they make each other. They tell parts, we tell parts of the story that are in the movie and in the other comics and in the other books, but we’re telling them not only in a different medium, but in a different way.

So, just as an example, so our story is very specifically about two pilots, Duke and Kaori who are pilots of Tacit Ronin which we saw for twenty seconds, ten seconds maybe, in the movie. And Tacit Ronin is by far my favorite of all of the Jaegers. It’s named after Ronin, it’s Japanese built, and it looks a bit like a samurai. It’s neutral pose is sort of like the dueling samurai position where the samurai grabs his sword.

There’s another Japanese Jaeger named Coyote Tango. Does it show up?

Joshua Fialkov: Coyote Tango does I believe show up in issue 3 or 4. More Jaegers show up. We get to see a whole bunch of them. And Tacit Ronin, we’re seeing Tacit Ronin at the top of our story at sort of the peak of its skills. But unfortunately as the Kaiju are getting more advanced and as the Kaiju are developing, it’s just kind of not enough.

So this is a prequel?

Fialkov: Yes, it takes place before the movie. So we get to follow this love story of two pilots who are now deeply in love and how their love is the thing that either saves or dooms them in the process of fighting this gigantic monster. And like I said, what I’m proudest of really is that it’s very much a story about the people inside the Jaeger, while still having literally eleven pages of monster fighting.

It’s interesting that you’re introducing love, because love happened in Pacific Rim but in a drastically different way. Mako and Raleigh loved each other but not in the traditional movie sensibility. What made you want to insert unambiguous “I love you” into Pacific Rim?

Fialkov: Part of it is that it comes from a story that Guillermo and [screenwriter] Travis Beacham, part of it is that it comes from a story that they really wanted to tell. But then the other side of it is, like you said, we see in the movie two core relationships. We see two brothers at the beginning, we see Raleigh and his brother, and their understanding of each other is because they’ve been together their whole lives. They’ve had this entire life together that has made them easy to become a pair.

And then on the other side you have Mako and Raleigh learning to fight together, and both of them are sort of desperate for this thing to work. They are literally the last hope, they have no choice but to find a way to make it work.

What’s different about our story and what’s sort of fun to explore is this idea that these two people when they met, when they got together, the last people they wanted to match with, the last person they wanted to have a high drift compatibility score with was each other. So we get to see them really resist, and really not want it to work even though everyone around them is telling them “You idiots, this is the thing that’s supposed to work.” So I think that story is really fun and it’s really powerful.

And, again it’s fun because you’re taking those romantic comedy tropes and you’re playing it against the big giant epic scale of a giant genre story.

How much input did Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham have? Did they have any suggestions, or were they totally hands-off allowing you to do what you want?

Fialkov: Like I said, it came from a story the two of them put together. Travis wrote it from conversations with Guillermo, and then once I was brought in it was a very open conversation. I got to sit down with Guillermo and talk about what his vision was and what he wanted to accomplish with the story. He reads every script, he sees every page of art. He’s hands-on, but hands on in the very best way. You’re getting it straight from the horse’s mouth, as they say.

So what were some of your own personal influences? What got you into comic book writing, and what’s it like to be tackling something as big as Pacific Rim?

Fialkov: I got into comics very specifically to tell incredibly personal stories. It was a way to really do what we’re doing in Pacific Rim which is to tell genre stories, stories that are dressed up in the clothes of genre, but are really about people, about people and how they cope.

So this is my sixteenth or fifteenth year writing comic books, it’s been a really long time, and the bulk of what I do are books. Like, I do a book called The Bunker at Oni Press. Also coming up on Wednesday I have a new volume of a book I do called Exodus: The Life After, which is a big crazy adventure story set in the afterlife for suicides. The main character is a guy who woke up one morning in the afterlife for suicides, has no memory of committing suicide, and then goes on this epic adventure with Ernest Hemingway and an assorted cast of weirdos as he tries to figure out who he is and how he got there.

And there’s two trade paperbacks of The Life After out, and then I have a third book that I’m doing right now. It’s a book called King which I’m doing with Jet City which is an imprint of Amazon. It’s a post-apocalyptic adventure book about after every possible apocalypse that has ever happened, there is one man left on Earth, and all he wants to do is get to work to get paid. It’s literally a story of the worst commute ever.

People really don’t know if Pacific Rim 2 is coming. That’s still very much up in the air, and I read conflicting reports every day. So with the fate of Pacific Rim up in the air, what was like to contribute to a story that you don’t know is going to be built upon tomorrow?

Fialkov: I mean, I know that everybody and Legendary loves Pacific Rim. They all believe in it, they care about it. This is their baby. I know that it’s something that, there will be Pacific Rim stuff for years to come. I don’t know anything about the movie or anything about that stuff. Working on it has been really rewarding, again because the difference between this and any, I mean I’ve written He-Man comics, I’ve written Doctor Who comics, I’ve written Spider-Man, I’ve written all these different characters, but you never really get to work with the person who created the character.

Getting to work in this universe with Guillermo and with Travis has really been probably the most rewarding part because you’re getting it, like I said, straight from the horse’s mouth and you’re getting their full vision for what the world’s going to be. And these guys have such a crystal clear vision for the story they’re telling and what the universe is. I’m’ like everyone else, I can’t wait to see what they do next.

What else can you tell me about the book that we don’t know yet? Is there anything that you’re adding into the Pacific Rim mythos that might be included into Pacific Rim 2?

Fialkov: There’s some stuff, I don’t want to spoil it. A lot of it is in future issues. I do want to say, our artists are Marcos Marz who is pencils and ink, and the colorist is Marcelo Maiolo and the two of them are doing career defining work. It is so gorgeous and so cool. Guillermo hand-picked Marcos to be the artist. They’re both just doing brilliant work. And getting to work on it, just as much a fan as you are, I’m as much of a fan. So getting to add to the history of the universe, getting to add to the story of what comes next is such a huge huge huge gift for me.

Pacific Rim: Tales of the Drift is out now on comic store shelves.

Briefly: Man, this is not Guillermo Del Toro’s year.

First, the master filmmaker’s collaboration with master gamemaker Hideo Kojima, a reboot of the once lauded Silent Hill series was shuddered after Konami kind of went crazy, and now it looks like the sequel to 2013’s fantastic and original monsters fightin’ robots flick Pacific Rim has been delayed indefinitely and may not happen at all.

May not happen at all. Damn it.

THR broke the news earlier today and while not many details were provided, basically Pacific Rim was  “one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn’t a sure thing.”

Damn it. With a new comic book and animated series also in the works (read my interview with the writer of the new Pacific Rim comic, Joshua Fialkov here), it may be hard to see what the future of the franchise sits, but I certainly hope that Universal comes to its senses and that Pacific Rim 2 doesn’t get lost in the drift.

In any case, I’m beyond excited for Del Toro’s upcoming Crimson Peak.

If Pacific Rim 2 still happens, what do you hope to see in the sequel?

Briefly: This is truly the darkest timeline.

Just a year ago, PS4 players everywhere were being scared shitless by Lisa and the countless terrors of the dreaded hallway in P.T., a new ‘indie’ title that actually turned out to be a ‘Playable Teaser’ for Silent Hills.

The game was set to reboot the once venerable and now beyond mediocre horror series, and was to be an incredible collaboration between three fantastic artists, Hideo Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro, and Norman Reedus.

Then, shit hit the fan, the game was cancelled, Konami all but stopped making video games (a hyperbole, but barely), and we heard rumours that Del Toro and Kojima still wanted to work together on a gaming project.

Del Toro just revealed that that’s never going to happen. In an interview with Shack News, he said the following:

I have proven to be the albatross of video games. I joined THQ, and THQ goes broke. I join Kojima, and Kojima leaves Konami. I have decided, in order not to destroy anyone else’s life, I have decided I will never again get involved in video games. Otherwise, I’ll join someone and his house will explode, or something.”

Has 2015 been the worst year for video game news? Is there a year that’s had anything worse happen? Or has it just hit me especially hard because I’m a Silent Hill fan?

Do you hope to see another Del Toro and Kojima-less Silent Hill game? Even with the series’ recent track record? Sound out below.

You might surprised that Ron Perlman doesn’t want to make Hellboy 3 considering he’s been one of the biggest cheerleaders for the film getting made.  His constant tweeting and rallying for support of the film at conventions such as Comic-con make it even more baffling that he doesn’t actually want to do it.  His reasoning?  Check out the quote from a recent interview Perlman gave after a TCA panel for his Amazon series Hand of God:

“Let me make the record clear,” Perlman said. “I don’t want to do Hellboy 3. It’s a pain in the ass to put that makeup on and take it off. But I feel we’re obligated to finish the story. That’s it. End of conversation.”

At 65, Perlman has every right to groan at the thought of hours and hours of make-up being applied every morning.  He may not have to worry though as both Universal and Columbia have both passed on the project and the director of the first two films in the franchise Guillermo Del Toro has also stated finding financing for the film has been a challenge.

The Hellboy films are solid action flicks in my opinion.  I really enjoyed the action sequences and practicality of the effects in Hellboy 2 but found little joy elsewhere in the film (It should be noted that The Dark Knight came out around this same time and ruined all other movies for me for at least 87 weeks).  I, like Ron, could do without another film in the franchise but would most likely see it if hit the big screen so I can keep my geek card.  Aside from not being a huge fan of the franchise, I would like to see Del Toro tackle more original properties such as Pacific Rim and move forward with his career rather than revert back to what feels like an old fashioned franchise at this point.

Briefly: Gamers everywhere have been pretty upset (understatement) at Konami over the what-are-they-thinking cancellation of the Hideo Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro, and Norman Reedus collaboration, Silent Hills.

The Silent Hill series has been my absolutely favourite franchise since 1998, when 8 year-old me didn’t sleep for nearly a week after playing the first game. I watched the series grow to become the award winning undisputed king of survival horror, and then fall to mediocrity before finally becoming laughable.

Then, last Summer with the launch of P.T., fans of the series once again had hope. This was going to be the resurrection that the series, and genre, needed. Then Konami took it away.

YouTuber Super Bunnyhop has just released a detailed eulogy for the property, which does a great job of lamenting just what was special about P.T., and what it could have done for the series. Whether you were a fan of the game or are just now wondering what all of this P.T. chatter is all about, it’s well, well worth the watch.

Briefly: Following the season’s first trailer from earlier this month, FX has revealed just when we’ll be able to jump back into the world of The Strain.

Season two will debut on Sunday, July 12 (which also happens to be the final day of this year’s SDCC). I was a big fan of last year’s The Strain, once the first few (kind of boring) episodes passed and the series really began to ramp up. That being said, I’m more than excited for the second season to finally premiere.

As the second season unfolds, the transformation has begun. It can no longer be denied — New York City is rapidly falling to an evil epidemic, and no one is coming to its rescue. Its citizens must fight or die. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and his unlikely allies tried to take down the embodiment of this evil — the Master — and failed. Now Eph and Dr. Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) concentrate on creating a biological weapon to wipe out the creatures, while Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) searches for an ancient book he hopes will reveal the strigoi’s entire history…and possibly a way to kill them. Meanwhile, the Master is out for revenge, unleashing new and even more terrifying breeds of bloodthirsty creatures after our team. Our team must find a way to defeat him before the infection spreads too far and becomes irreparable … before they become monsters themselves.

Strain2

I think we’re on the brink of another horror film renaissance. After the genre was largely declared dead during the mid-2000’s, a string of genuinely terrifying modern masterpieces have become more commonplace. From mainstream fare like InsidiousThe Conjuring to indie hits like The Babadook and It Follows, and even underappreciated gems like As Above/So Below have proven that horror is back.

While Guillermo del Toro hasn’t necessarily made true horror since arguably The Devil’s Backbone, he’s still a master of the macabre and his newest film Crimson Peak appears to be a return to his roots.

Yes ladies and gentleman, that’s Tom Hiddelston. This movie is partially responsible for his unavailability for Age of Ultron, and frankly I think it seems worth it.

As a massive fan of del Toro, I really cannot wait for this movie.

Briefly: A new trailer is set to debut tomorrow, but Legendary pictures has just debuted a fantastic new motion poster for Crimson Peak.

We’ll never get to see Del Toro’s touch on Silent Hills, but Crimson Peak looks freaking incredible. I had the fantastic opportunity to meet with Del Toro at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, as well as see a few props and pieces of the set. It’s safe to say that Crimson Peak has been one of my most anticipated films since that day.

You can take a look at the motion poster below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Crimson Peak hits theatres on October 16th, 2015!

Check out the new motion poster for #CrimsonPeak, and look for the new trailer tomorrow!

Briefly: We’re still without a premiere date, but the first trailer for The Strain’s highly anticipated second season has just hit the web, along with a brand new poster via Entertainment Weekly.

I was a big fan of last year’s The Strain, once the first few (kind of boring) episodes passed and the series really began to ramp up. That being said, I’m more than excited for the second season to premiere this Summer.

Take a look at the trailer and poster below, and let us know what you think! The Strain‘s second season is without a premiere date at this point, but we’ll be sure to share as soon as we learn more!

2015 has been a fucking roller coaster of emotions when it comes to video game releases. We’ve gotten projects pushed back, projects getting nerfed and EA and Konami on par with customer service. It looks like our worst fears have been confirmed.

With Hideo Kojima’s recent removal on a few projects after his “departure” from Konami, the only thing on our minds was

WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO PT AND SILENT HILLS?!?!

Last night we had confirmation that the PT demo was going to be removed from the PSN store, and now a Tweet circulating the web has confirmed out greatest fears.

This Tweet comes from Del Toro’s panel at the San Francisco International Film Festival. Now this was all just speculation, but looks like Norman Reedus is parroting the same narrative.

Not much else to say, except…I’m fucking sad as hell. We need to put our own Derek Kraneveldt on suicide watch!

Briefly: Dang.

Two films that I was really looking forward to have just received delays. Sure, they’re small delays, but delays nonetheless.

Warcraft, which was initially slated for March 2016, has received a new date of June 10th 2016. This puts it into the busy Summer movie season (showing confidence for the film, right?), and also pushes it away from the sure-to-be-a-blockbuster Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Pacific Rim 2 was originally set to release in April of 2017, and will also get a push to the Summer, hitting theatres on August 4th, 2017.

At least each push is only a few months, right? Are one are you most looking forward to? Sound out below!

Briefly: Hot on the heels of announcing graphic novels based on Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat and KrampusLegendary Comics today announced three new titles; a continuation of 2013’s Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, and two entirely new IP’s.

Pacific Rim: Tales From The Drift will launch as a four-issue monthly series this November. Presented by Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro, and with a story by Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham (who we had on Geekscape way back when), Tales From The Drift is written by Joshua Fialkov (The Bunker, I, Vampire, Elk’s Run) and features artwork by Marcos Marz (Batman Confidential, Blackest Night: JSA). More info on the book is still to come, but Tales From The Drift is said to feature Jaegers never before seen in combat, squaring off against all-new Kaiju creatures. Take a look at two preview pages below, and read on for the new IP’s!

Next up is espionage thriller Black Bag. This one’s about a suburban wife-turned-covert government assassin comes from writer Chris Roberson, creator of the breakout comic iZombie (you know, the one that just got a fantastic series), and features art from fast-rising talent JB Bastos, known for his standout work on Lion Forge’s Night TrapBlack Bag will run for six issues, and is set to debut this Fall. Unlike Tales From The Drift, this one’s already got a synopsis, which is as follows:

A suburban housewife with a criminal past and a thirst for adrenaline is about to get a top-secret side job: carrying out the government’s most dangerous missions.

Renear is tired of playing by the rules. A valedictorian and top athlete in her younger years, she’s sacrificed a promising career to tie the knot and play house… isn’t there more to life than this? Of course there is – if you’re willing to take the shot.

It’s time the world found out what she is truly capable of.

Finally, it’s Cops for Criminals, a daring new crime-thriller series about a federal agent forced to find true justice in the criminal underworld. This one’s got some all-star talent attached as it’s written by Steven Grant (Punisher War Journal, Avengers, Hulk, X) with art from Pete Woods (Deadpool, Robin, Catwoman). Here’s the synopsis:

When a federal agent becomes a victim of the system he has sworn to uphold, he finds true justice in the criminal underworld.

Agent Woods was one of the best – but everything changed when he was wrongfully convicted and labeled a traitor. After serving his time, this ex-convict is cut loose onto the lawless streets to fight corruption on both sides of the law. Even criminals need a code – and every code needs an enforcer.

Which books will you be adding to your pull list? For me? Easy. All of them!

I first heard about Guillermo del Toro’s, “masterpiece”, Crimson Peak last year at SDCC. Our booth neighbors at Legendary had an amazing booth display designed by the set designers of the film. When I took the tour, and learned about the effort that went into this TINY little hallway I instantly knew I wanted to see this movie. And after watching this trailer, I…I just need this film in my life!

Legendary Pictures’ Crimson Peak, a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim), written by del Toro & Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Callum Greene produce, and Jillian Share executive produces.

Did you see that shit?! SO ON BOARD! That hallway where the ghost came out of the floor? Yeah, I’VE BEEN THERE! Or I’ve been in an impressive simulation of that hallway on the SDCC convention floor.

Crimson Peak is set to hit theaters October 16th, 2015. Just in time for some Halloween fun!

We’re all big fans of The Strain here over at Geekscape, some of us since the first novel released back in 2009, and some of us last Summer when the FX series first premiered (dat premiere, right?)

The fantastic vampire drama was renewed for a second season back in August, and we were pretty damned excited to learn that this universe would be continuing for at least another year. We even had series star Sean Astin on the show back in September!

Not familiar with the series? Well, When a freak virus kills all but four passengers on an airplane at JFK, Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll), head of the Center for Disease Control’s “Canary Team,” is immediately called to the scene. With help from a mysterious Holocaust survivor (David Bradley), “Eph” and his colleague (Mía Maestro) uncover the outbreak’s ties to vampirism. Now, the only way to stop the terrifying disease from wiping out mankind is to face its source – a sinister supernatural creature known as “The Master” – whose evil intent seems more powerful than any other force on Earth!

Renowned director Guillermo del Toro just submitted a new script based on the Justice League Dark comic series (tentatively titled Dark Universe) to Warner Bros. We have much to be thankful for this Thanksgiving.

According to Forbes and /Film, del Toro’s script will feature DC horror staples Swamp Thing, The Demon, Deadman, The Spectre, and among others, John Constantine. I hope Zatanna Zatara is in there somewhere. del Toro has been working on Justice League Dark for several years now, but the last anyone heard about it was vague updates about a story bible. Until today.

With Warner Bros. desperate for any new franchise — and have been since Harry Potter completed his studies and Christopher Nolan’s Batman stopped doing Batman-y things — the studio might be more receptive to the fertile ground that is DC’s occult universe. While Warner Bros. does have Justice League and other associated superhero movies slated for the next several years, they all rely on the success of Batman v. Superman, and while the financial success of that movie is pretty much a given it wouldn’t be a bad idea for the studio to be cooking up other things. The Justice League Dark offers a wealth of fresh characters still relatively unknown and have the potential to be their own powerhouse. At best, they can be the true, symbolically new Universal monsters for the 21st century.

It is also entirely unknown whether or not Dark Universe will tie into the previously-mentioned Justice League movies. A year ago Guillermo del Toro said it was a possibility, but Badass Digest says it’s a sturdy no. I can’t see why not, although I’d understand if they want to focus on building each universe to be their own thing first before expanding into one giant clusterf*ck.

Still, there are reasons for pause. del Toro is currently knee-deep in post-production of Crimson Peak, and shortly after he’ll be taking on continuing Pacific Rim. On top of that, I’m pretty sure executive producing The Strain requires a lot of attention. Even if Warner Bros. executives love del Toro’s script and immediately greenlight it, we won’t see a glimpse of it until maybe 2017. A final film maybe in 2018 or 2019, and that’s being optimistic. (I just realized Power Rangers will be an actual thing by then, and I just got mad del Toro isn’t working on that.)

Elsewhere, NBC’s Constantine struggles to stay on television. News about the show’s continuation are still up in the air, but in the meantime you can watch all five episodes aired so far in their entirety here, free!

I’ve said before how Constantine on NBC is a chance to see the league on television and be totally amazing. I’m still processing how the show might die but a league story may live on a greater scale than I could have imagined.

While movie Constantine pretties himself to return to the big screen, TV Constantine is a drunken pledge passed out at a frat party. He’ll be fine! No, don’t call the cops yet! Wait! Just, turn his head over or something.

Are you excited for a big-screen Justice League Dark movie as I am? Comment below.

Obviously we’ve been big fans of Sean Astin for years. Goonies, Rudy, TMNT, The Lord of the Rings and now The Strain have made us all lifelong fans. But there’s a lot about Sean that you may not know, like how active he is in politics and that he’s an avid runner. Well, you’re going to know all that now as he guests on the show and tells us about his conflicted character on The Strain, stepping barefoot into Middle Earth, being involved in politics and his talk show Vox Populi and whether or not he can keep pace with me as a distance runner (he can)! I think you’ll find him to be everything you expected: a smart, thoughtful guy who is passionate about everything he does. I loved having him on the show!

Well this sounds incredible.

Legendary Entertainment YouTube Spaces, and Guillermo Del Toro have just announced an amazing collaboration called the YouTube Space House of Horrors: A Legendary Halloween Initiative.

The initiative will allow YouTube creators in Los Angeles, LondonTokyo and New York to create original videos on terrifying cinematic sets inspired by Guillermo del Toro as part of a special global programming event on YouTube. Here’s all the info straight from the release:

From September 22 – October 28, 2014, YouTube creators will write, shoot and edit their scariest videos at the YouTube Spaces. As well as appearing on individual creator channels, all content will appear on the YouTube Spaces channel, the official Legendary YouTube channel and promoted through social media platforms. Videos are slated to go live between October 21 and Halloween.

In celebration of his return to horror with the upcoming Crimson Peak, master of ceremonies, Guillermo del Toro, will select his scariest videos to come out of each region and provide a personal rough-cut creative consultation with the creators.

One lucky talent will even be offered a development deal from Legendary Entertainment, which is an absolutely mind-blowing opportunity. Want to see the sets? Here is some concept art:

HauntedGarden

GreatRoom

The Guillermo del Toro-inspired sets vary by Space but may include a Great Room from an old manor house lined with walls of books, a sinister staircase and Gothic windows that lead out to a haunted garden; a room filled with exotic & occult artifacts from around the world; an abandoned Solarium cluttered with over-grown plants, birdcages and weathered tools; a claustrophobic Attic with foreboding art, dusty mirrors and a hidden trap door.

Here’s some further info, straight from the man himself:

It’s an amazing opportunity, and I really, really can’t wait to see what comes of it.

Briefly: FX today renewed their popular horror-drama The Strain for a second season.

While it took a few episodes to get going, I’m thoroughly enjoying where the series is going at this point, and I’m ecstatic that its story won’t conclude when the first season does.

The 13-episode second season will debut next Summer. John Landgraf, CEO of FX Networks said that “We’ve never had any doubts about ‘The Strain. Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale.”

You can take a look at the extended trailer for the series below, and be sure to let you know what you’ve thought of The Strain so far!

It’s still hard to believe that yesterday’s news could possibly be true, but alas, a new Silent Hill game is finally in development, it stars Norman Reedus, and it’s a collaboration between master filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro and master gamemaker Hideo Kojima.

Yep, the dude that created Metal Gear Solid (and who I met at Comic-Con last year), and the dude who directed the Hellboy series Pan’s Labyrinth.

The way that the game was announced is equally as incredible. At yesterday’s Gamescom press conference, Sony debuted a new independent horror game called P.T., which it turns out was a fake game by a developer that doesn’t exist, and it was actually a ruse by Kojima and co. to build hype for Silent Hills. Who the heck announces a game like that?

And build hype it did. A playable P.T. demo hit the Playstation Store at the closure of their press conference, and gamers fell in love with it. I usually don’t have a problem with horror games (not since Silent Hill 2 in any case), but I tried to play P.T. for about 15 minutes last night before I had to turn it off. There’s no way in hell I’m going through that before bed. It’s legitimately terrifying in its visuals, audio, and especially its atmosphere, and if Del Toro and Kojima and their team can craft something so freaking scary as a teaser for a completely unrelated title, I cannot wait to see what they do with the full game. You can watch a run-through of P.T. below, if you dare.

And they are aiming to scare the hell out of players. At a follow-up press conference today (which also revealed that Kojima Productions is actually developing the game rather than just overseeing production), Kojima said that “Originally, we were thinking of making a game that would make you pee your pants,” Following discussions with Del Toro, Kojima decided, “we are aiming for a game that will make you shit your pants.”

Yep. Shit your pants. But what if it’s too scary? Won’t people simply not play? That’s not their problem, as it turns out, as Kojima continued “So be it. We don’t care. We are aiming for a game that will make you shit your pants. So please make sure you have a change of clothes.” He joked that “The limited edition will probably include a pair of trousers.”

I just hope that we get a release date, or at least more info on the game soon. I have a horror-itch that hasn’t been scratched since Silent Hill 4.

Are you looking forward to the game? Are you worried it’ll be too scary? Sound out below.

Briefly: Details are very scarce on this one, but it just may be some of the best gaming news that I’ve ever heard.

Silent Hill is my favourite video game series of all time. Somehow, even after the last few atrocious entries in the series (well, Downpour was okay), I’m still able to say that. That’s how much the series’ early titles resonated with me. It’s a series that was once the pinnacle of the horror gaming experience, and it’s a series that has since fallen into obscurity, mediocrity, and terrible, terrible films.

But that’s about to change, because a new Silent Hill game is in the works, and it’s a collaboration between Metal Gear Solid‘s Hideo Kojima, and master filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro. Oh, and it also stars Norman Reedus.

Today at Gamescom, Sony debuted a teaser for a mysterious title called P.T. The ‘world’s first’ interactive teaser was then uploaded onto the Playstation Store. Upon completion (which I’m about to try my hand at as soon as I finish writing), Norman Reedus appears in a desolate, familiar town, before the Silent Hills (yep, with an S) title card appears.

This is incredible news, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more. You can take a look at the P.T. teaser below, and be sure to let us know if you’ve downloaded the teaser yourself!

San Diego Comic-Con is a blast, isn’t it?

We’re in the midst of the convention’s second full day, and after checking out most of the floor and a lot of the offsite events (look for more on those later), the Legendary Entertainment booth is without a doubt one of the coolest experiences of the con (just like last year).

This year, instead of a gigantic warehouse, Legendary is showing off its talent by creating a mind-blowing experience in a tiny space. This consists of two events: the Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery and Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot.

The Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery is a physical experience handcrafted by Guillermo del Toro himself, fans will get a glimpse behind the curtain of Crimson Peak and an early tease of the ultimate haunted house. Designed in the look of one of the sets of the movie, the Gothic Gallery is a living breathing gallery of curiosities that includes props, costumes, and an atmospheric soundscape designed by Academy Award®Winner Randy Thom.

LEGENDARY_CP_IMAGE2

I had the amazing opportunity to be taken through the gallery by Guillermo Del Toro himself, and hearing him describe the art,  intricacies, and incredible design of the Gothic Gallery and the film’s mansion and props made me incredibly excited for a movie that we still don’t know a lot about. Del Toro wrote Crimson Peak over eight years ago, and after speaking with Del Toro about the film, I’m beyond sure that it will be worth the wait. He did say that we’ll see a teaser at the Legendary Entertainment panel on Saturday, so hopefully it’ll release online afterwards!

Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot is the next evolution of the thrilling universe Legendary is creating with director Guillermo del Toro. Created by the leading pioneers of virtual reality, Oculus VR, the attraction delivers a new benchmark in virtual reality experiences as fans will step into a fully-realized Jaeger Combat Simulator and experience what it feels like to pilot a 250-story robot. Created with original film assets from Industrial Light & Magic and developed within Unreal Engine 4, Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot provides a thrilling first-person battle between Gipsy Danger and the kaiju codenamed Knifehead.

LEGENDARY_PR_1
Jaeger Pilot was my first Oculus Rift experience, and it was freaking incredible. I’d seen countless videos of people freaking out on the roller coaster and other demos, but I had no idea just how truly immersive VR could be until I stepped inside a Jaeger. This was an experience that I could do again and again (and again), and not tire of. It’s tough to describe the feeling, but after removing the Oculus headset it was crystal clear to me that VR is the future of interactive entertainment. With the Jaeger Pilot experience being so cool, so early on, I cannot wait to see what VR develops into.

The Legendary booth is #3920, and is right next to Geekscape. Here’s how you can get into the booth yourself:

Legendary

Briefly: We’ve heard rumours for what seems like forever, and based on the first film’s performance we weren’t sure that it would ever happen, but Guillermo Del Toro himself has just announced that Pacific Rim 2 is officially in production.

Del Toro is working with The Avengers writer Zak Penn and Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham on the project, but another film isn’t all that Legendary has in store for us. We’ll also be getting a Pacific Rim animated series, and the comic book series that began with movie tie-in Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero will also continue.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Del Toro said that “The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

As a huge fan of the first film, I’d be happy to see anything new from this universe. A new film, an animated series, and a comic book series? I’m on board for everything.

Take a look at Del Toro’s announcement below, and let us know if you’re excited! Pacific Rim 2 will hit theatres on April 7th, 2017.

Briefly: Guillermo Del Toro’s The Strain is just a month away from premiere, and FX has finally given us a trailer that’s more than a few seconds long.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The footage looks great, and we really can’t wait to see more. Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! The series premieres on July 13th!

Briefly: This looks absolutely gorgeous.

Fox has just released the first trailer for The Book of Life, which was produced by Guillermo Del Toro (if you couldn’t tell by the super-Spanish stylings and Ron Perlman’s involvement), directed by first-timer Jorge R. Gutierrez, and stars Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana, Danny Trejo, Christina Applegate, Ron Perlman, and plenty of others.

The film follows “the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears. Rich with a fresh take on pop music favourites, The Book of Life encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.

The animation here is really beautiful, and we can’t wait to see more. Take a look at the first trailer for The Book of Life below, and let us know what you think! The film hits theatres on October 17th!
