Most successful individuals must work or train tirelessly to hone their craft, devoting a lifetime to reaching the pinnacles of their professions. Yet, somehow Aaron Sorkin appears to circumvent the norm with his seemingly effortless skills that have transformed the screenwriter and playwright into an Oscar-winning titan of the industry. Sorkin’s rare mastery of rapid dialogue interspersed with comedic undertones are staples in cinematic achievements such as A Few Good MenThe Social NetworkMoneyball and countless others. But now Sorkin feels ready to embrace the next major challenge in his life, as the prestigious writer tackles his directorial debut with the unbelievable true story behind his new film, Molly’s Game.

After a crushing defeat ends the Olympic dreams of young skiing sensation Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain), she ventures to California for a sunny retreat from intense training and a stressful upbringing at the behest of her father (Kevin Costner). While on the west coast, a series of odd jobs somehow navigates Molly into the underworld of high-stakes poker headlined by actors, athletes, politicians and all other kinds of celebrities. But as Molly’s thirst for expensive taste and her desperation to stay a part of the action crosses the line of legality, she’s forced to beg attorney Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba) for his counsel after the U.S. government presses serious charges and confiscate all of her finances.

If you’re a fan of Aaron Sorkin’s past work, his trademark style is on full display once again in Molly’s Game. Told through a non-chronological approach, the audience is given a thorough glance into the mindset of a remarkably gifted woman who trades her intellectual and physical strengths for a dark and exhausting life of underground gambling. Molly is at the forefront of nearly every scene, paving the way for Jessica Chastain to grow an audacious and compelling character. Despite Molly’s crazy life story that manages to stay engaging even through a lofty 140-minute affair, Chastain’s performance is strong but not transcendent. Her work rings familiar to another recent turn Chastain delivered in John Madden’s Miss Sloane, and the similarities sour the experience a bit. Idris Elba and Kevin Costner provide stellar supporting performances as well, but the largest issue with Molly’s Game is the film’s inability to elevate the stakes. The story feels grossly repetitious at times and its dramatic conclusion is regrettably flat. However, Sorkin’s usage of heavy dialogue is executed to his typical standards, keeping a comfortable beat and tempo that’s constantly moving and never bores. Molly’s Game is a decent effort and a fine directorial debut for Sorkin despite the movie’s lack of necessary escalation.

Much anticipated film “The Dark Tower” opens this weekend starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey. If you never invested the many hours of reading it takes to tackle the eight book and massively wordy series from Stephen King that the film is based upon, then you probably would think the “The Dark Tower” isn’t half bad despite the overwhelming hate the film is getting from critics.

A young boy, Jake Chambers (Tom Taylor), is having visions of other worlds. There’s a man in black who seems to be bent on destroying a tower (Matthew McConaughey), and a gunslinger (Idris Elba) who is opposing him. The boy is sure the world in his visions is real even when those around him insist he’s nuts. His destiny is to seek out the truth for himself which means he will have to face The Man In Black.

Critics are panning the film but is it because they know it took four writers, a massive effort with lots of setbacks to deliver the hour and thirty-five minute film? Is it because there is an expectation that the film should reflect everything that happened in all eight books? Is it because they expect the screen adaption to be more like a trilogy akin to “The Lord of the Rings?” Is it that they don’t know “The Dark Tower” is actually a sequel to the books. Yes, it’s a sequel. If you read the books then you may recall that the worlds are on a wheel, representing that life repeats. Roland defeated The Man in Black, but then Roland knew it was all going to happen again. This next time would be different and the film represents the next life of Roland.

If you set all that you know about the long tale that the film is based upon and just watch “The Dark Tower” as is, the film stands on it’s own two feet. It has a beginning, middle, and an ending that makes sense. It’s paced evenly. Has an intriguing story, excellent villain in casting McConaughey, and it’s a fantasy. So why the massive hate out there?

There are two distinct ways to view the film. One is with a background in Stephen King (which I have), and one without. I chose to judge the film based on it’s own merits rather than expecting it to somehow encompass the eight novels (that would perhaps have worked better as a TV series as first pitched long ago). It’s the only fair way to judge a film.

Complaining that the film took ten years, a zillion directors who came and went, etc. should have no bearing on the finished work. The truth is, some films take more effort than others. Sony thinks the effort was worth it and is counting on Stephen King fans to turn out and see the film. However, this is where the issue may lie, and unfairly so.

If you are a film studio and you green light a movie counting on that built-in fan base, then you should try and stick to the source material but the plausibility of that happening is near to zero. That’s not opinion. You can’t take eight books and cram it into a film. A percentage of critics seem to think that justifies burying the film in negative reviews. “The Dark Tower” isn’t “The Lord of the Rings” but to some it could have been, and therein lies the root behind the lousy reviews generally.

Expectation is sometimes hard to curb especially in this case because of the source material. The solution lies in the marketing. The studio should have made a better effort in delivering  a message that stressed that “The Dark Tower” is a loosely based adaptation of King’s work and most importantly that it’s a sequel to the books. There were a lot of interviews out there beforehand that could have highlighted the nature of how King ended the books to curb expectations. Additionally, marketing could have better opened minds that the underlining goal was to create a version that worked in less than 2 hours for the big screen and not have King fans expecting the next “Lord of the Rings” -esque cinematic experience. The expectation is not set appropriately and the critical scores fairly/unfairly reflect this.

NEW YORK, NY – JUNE 30: Matthew McConaughey seen filming “The Dark Tower” on June 30, 2016 in New York City. (Photo by Steve Sands/GC Images)

What did they get right? Casting McConaughey as the villain. He literally drips vileness all over his character and plays Walter, aka The Man in Black,  as an evil devil filled with hate. He gets ample opportunity to showcase his nastiness in equally small and devastating ways on screen. McConaughey smartly drops the Texan accent and never once feels like the actor I’ve seen in a zillion movies. He personifies The Man in Black.

Another smart move was casting Idris Elba. The character itself doesn’t have a lot of range. He’s basically a fallen good guy who has turned a loss into a need of revenge. In the books the character had way more depth, in the movie he’s just barely more than two dimensions. It’s apparently enough motivation for Elba to deftly play a man nearly broken and living on the hope that he will get revenge someday. He’s intense when deservedly so, and then able to shift gears and appear fatherly to the boy Jake in quieter scenes. His character doesn’t have a lot of dimension but Elba still plays Roland as best as the writing allows.

Tom Taylor who plays “Jake” looks to be in that horribly awkward age of not being a kid, and not being an adult. Nonetheless, he can act and you’d think he’s done thirty films. His character has the most to work with getting to exhibit a wide range of emotions. Hopefully future casting directors will see through the lousy ratings and get this actor more work.

The special effects are decent with the exception of a fight scene where Roland gets struck so hard his body flies up and hits a wall which looked like a dark cartoon. Other than that, the effects were solid. Some interesting sets and back drops, costumes looked good and several odes to other works of King for fans to be on the lookout for. Yet the film is in contention despite it having a passing grade on all criteria.

“The Dark Tower” stands on it’s own two feet when not held in context to its source material as the creators wanted. Yes, screenwriters chose to gloss over the deeper dynamics of the source material in lieu of a faster, perhaps less meaningful overall story. Despite that, the story is still balanced, characters motivations make sense, and it’s evenly paced. The studio undoubtedly is counting on Stephen King fans to fill the seats this weekend and that’s where the expectation may fall short because of critics panning the film. You can’t expect built-in fan support for a project that doesn’t deliver on the source material. Unfortunately, and fair or not, “The Dark Tower” doesn’t deliver on King’s opus work simply because his tale is too massive for the medium and should be done via episodic TV (if done at all).  Cinematically “The Dark Tower” equates to a nice diversion and probably won’t stay in the minds of moviegoers as anything special. It rises to just above mediocrity.  If you either watch the film as a stand-alone, or with the idea that it’s a sequel to the eight books it’s based upon, you may get more out of it.

Based on Stephen King’s book series, Sony Pictures’ upcoming film, The Dark Tower, just got its first trailer today! As one would expect from a movie based on King’s work, the feel of the snippets shown are gritty, mysterious, and action-packed. I am sure we can expect lots of explosions. Let’s take a look:

With Idris Elba as Roland Deschain the Gunslinger opposite Matthew McConaughey’s The Man In Black, the movie is looking promising. What did you think?

The Dark Tower heads to theaters on August 4. If you are itching for more information and updates, The Dark Tower also has dedicated Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts.

Briefly: It’s hard to believe that the next Star Trek feature hits theatres next month, isn’t it?

After a solid (yet seeming divisive) marketing campaign thus far, Paramount today debuted two brand new, slick as hell TV spots for the upcoming film. In Beyond, “the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.”

The second spot is especially gorgeous… and also three times as long so it’s bound to be more exciting.

In any case, you can take a look at the videos below, and be sure to let us know if you’ll be lining up for Star Trek Beyond, when it hits theatres on July 22nd!

After being leaked, Paramount has decided to release the official teaser trailer for ‘Star Trek Beyond’  which was to be attached to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.

With the departure of J.J. Abrams from the project, Justin Lin (Fast and the Furious) steps in for the directorial duties. The teaser already showcases that by featuring a stunt using a primitive two-wheeled vehicle to the classical tune of Beastie Boy’s Sabotage. By the looks of it this going to be a very different movie. Reminiscent of when John Woo took over directing duties for Mission Impossible and changed the tone of the franchise. Which was a good thing in my opinion, the last film was very moody and had no life into it.

The returning ‘Star Trek Beyond’ cast line up includes Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy a.k.a. Bones, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Idris Elba will be portraying the films secret villain role.

‘Star Trek Beyond’ will warp into theaters on July 8, 2016.

Briefly: Could you imagine a world where Netflix began to win Academy Awards for their original films?

Because I think that’s what they’re shooting for here.

The first trailer for the Idris Elba starring Beasts of No Nation has just hit the web, and it looks heavy in content and incredible in production value. Directed by Cary Fukunaga, the same talent behind True Detective‘s ingenious first season, I definitely think that this will be a film to watch out for come awards season.

In the film, “when civil war tears his family apart, a young West African boy is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters and transform into a child soldier.” Yep. Heavy stuff.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Beasts of No Nation‘ is Netflix’s first foray into original films. The film, based on Uzodinma Iweala’s 2005 novel of the same name, follows a young West African boy (Abraham Attah) who is forced to join a unit of mercenary fighters when a civil war tears his family apart. The boy is put to the test by the group’s Warlord (Idris Elba) who takes the boy under his wing, and molds him into a soldier.

Beasts Of No Nations‘ is scheduled to begin streaming on Oct. 16

Briefly: We’ve heard rumours for what seems like forever, and based on the first film’s performance we weren’t sure that it would ever happen, but Guillermo Del Toro himself has just announced that Pacific Rim 2 is officially in production.

Del Toro is working with The Avengers writer Zak Penn and Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham on the project, but another film isn’t all that Legendary has in store for us. We’ll also be getting a Pacific Rim animated series, and the comic book series that began with movie tie-in Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero will also continue.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Del Toro said that “The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

As a huge fan of the first film, I’d be happy to see anything new from this universe. A new film, an animated series, and a comic book series? I’m on board for everything.

Take a look at Del Toro’s announcement below, and let us know if you’re excited! Pacific Rim 2 will hit theatres on April 7th, 2017.

Guillermo Del Toro’s summer blockbuster robot vs monsters movie, Pacific Rim, has been released on Blu-Ray/DVD.

pacific-rim-blu-ray-box-art

The movie is available as a Blu-ray 3D combo pack, a Blu-ray combo pack and a two-disc DVD pack. All three offer the theatrical release of the film (the Blu-ray 3d option offers the theatrical release in 3D) and the Ultraviolet for downloading and streaming the film to various devices.

The blu-ray packs come with numerous special features (a whole separate disc of them, in fact), including a audio commentary by Guillermo Del Toro, the Director’s notebook, a in-depth look at drift space, the digital art of Pacific Rim, focus points, deleted scenes and a blooper reel.

Those who saw the movie in the theaters won’t see anything new when viewing the theatrical release: the film is still a loud, brawling tween boy’s dream, impossibly large monsters bashing against robots who differ from the Transformers only in that they lack the Transformer’s finesse and subtlety. While it certainly doesn’t hold up to a in-depth analysis, it’s fun, with effects and a soundtrack/score that drive the movie forward towards its (predictable) end.

The special features are entertaining and interesting for fans of the film; they are the cherry on top of the sundae–provided you like ice cream.

Pacific Rim is available on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack for $44.95, on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and on 2-disc DVD Special Edition for $28.98.

Geekscape Score: 3.5/5

Briefly: Screen Junkies Honest Trailers has to be one of my favourite series on YouTube, and now they’ve taken on one of my favourite films of the Summer, Pacific Rim.

It sure points out some (a lot of) glaring issues that the film may have had, but it also points out just how awesome it was.

Take a look at the latest instalment of Honest Trailers below, and let us know what you thought of Pacific Rim!

Briefly: The Pacific Rim Blu-Ray is now less than a week away from release (I hope you’re picking it up), and a fantastic blooper reel from the set has leaked online.

It clocks in at a cool four minutes, and certainly does a good job of showing just how fun the production of Pacific Rim was. I really can’t wait to pick up the Blu-Ray and find out what other goodies are in store. It was one of the best moviegoing experiences that I had this year, and I can’t wait to jump back into that world.

Take a look at the reel below, and let us know what you think! The Pacific Rim Blu-Ray hits stores on October 15th!

Looking for more Pacific Rim? Screenwriter Travis Beacham was a guest on the show earlier this Summer!

Briefly: Now that the Summer movie season is officially over, it’s pretty safe to say that Pacific Rim was one of my most enjoyable moviegoing experiences all year. It may not have broken the box office records that it could have, and it may never get a sequel since apparently nobody saw it, but Pacific Rim was a hell of a lot of fun.

Of course, the film also had some of the best visual effects that I’ve ever seen. I still recall my first time viewing the movie, and at multiple points throughout thinking “how the hell did they make this?” It’s that incredible.

Mirada Studios was in charge of creating the film’s two-minute prologue, and they’ve released a cool new video demonstrating some jarring before and after shots. It’s a fantastic watch for fans of the film or visual effects in general, and I simply had to share! Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you thought of Pacific Rim!

To excite you for your midnight showing later tonight (you have purchased your tickets, right?), Warner Bros. has just released an awesome new clip for Pacific Rim.

The video, which is nearly three minutes in length, shows a stunning extended look at the Jaeger Gypsy Danger. The clip is made up of a series of long takes, which literally had me saying ‘wow’ at multiple points throughout.

I won’t spoil it for you. This thing is beautiful. Watch the new clip below, and let us know if you’re excited! Pacific Rim hits theatres tonight, and seeing as it’s one of the few original films this Summer, it definitely deserves your cash.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Four. More. Days.

Pacific Rim is finally just around the corner, and Warner Bros. has just debuted a fantastic new behind-the-scenes featurette for the film. A multitude of cast and crew members are interviewed during the video, including Ron Perlman, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and more.

You must know by now just how excited we are for Pacific Rim. We even had a fantastic opportunity to sit down with Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham, both on the show, and in a private interviewPacific Rim is set to be one of the surprise hits of the Summer, and if all of the early buzz has been any indication, this is one film that you need to see in the biggest theatre that you possibly can.

Just one more week of waiting until Pacific Rim finally hits theatres, and Warner Bros. has just released another two TV spots for the film. Just like the rest of the world, I really can’t wait to get in line for this one.

The spots are titled “Classified” and ” Fight Critics”. Each features some new footage, and does a damn good job of further exciting me for the picture. Take a look at each new preview below, and let us know what you think!

After Pacific Rim’s world premiere just a few days ago, Twitter buzz for the film has been very steady. The bulk of it seems extremely positive, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Check out some prominent quotes about the movie below, and be sure to let us know how excited you are. Pacific Rim hits theatres next Friday, July 12th.

Sounds pretty good, huh?

Pacific Rim hits theatres in just over a week, and Warner Bros. is certainly giving this original film the marketing push that it deserves. A multitude of new posters and clips have been released in recent days, and the studio has just debut a fantatic, epic final trailer for the feature.

You know full well how excited we are for Pacific Rim to release, so we won’t waste any more time telling you how incredible it looks. Watch the final trailer below, watch last week’s Geekscape featuring Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham, and let us know how excited you are!

The Pacific Rim marketing just keeps coming! Less than one day after two new character posters were revealed for the film, Warner Bros. has released another two posters, plus a new clip to further excite you for the coming epic.

The first poster features Australian Jaeger Striker Eureka, while the second spotlights ‘Category 4’ Kaiju Leatherback. The new clip look similar to footage we’ve seen in the recent trailers, but looks like the setup for an intense battle.

Pacific Rim hits theatres in less than two weeks, and Warner Bros. has definitely begun a heavy marketing push for the film. Yesterday, four fantastic new clips were released, and the studio has just unveiled two new character posters.

One image features the monstrous ‘Category 4’ Kaiju Otachi, while the other spotlights American Jaeger Gipsy Danger. The two are set to face-off in the feature, which should definitely make for an interesting matchup.

Legendary Pictures highly anticpated Pacific Rim is less than two weeks away from release, and the studio has just unveiled four new clips from the film.

Each clip takes us through a different scene from the movie, including a Kaiju/Jaeger battle, training, arguing, and some black-market dealing. Each and every one of them looks absolutely fantastic.

Guillermo Del Toro’s highly anticipated Pacific Rim is now just two weeks away, and Warner Bros. has just released a new featurette for the film.

Titled Under Attack, the featurette shows off plenty of new footage from the movie, and features Guillermo Del Toro, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Charlie Day speaking about their roles in the groundbreaking project.

Pacific Rim looks incredible, and we couldn’t be more excited for it. Watch the featurette below, and let us know what you think! Looking for more Pacific Rim? Screenwriter Travis Beacham was just a guest on the show!

This may be Pacific Rim‘s best preview yet.

Idris Elba’s fantastic ‘cancel the apocalypse’ speech overlays some incredible Kaiju/Jaeger action, and really sets a phenomenal tone for the upcoming film. The action looks amazing, the cinematography and sound are beyond impressive, and the plot sounds solid. I hope that Pacific Rim does well for Legendary, as I already feel as though this world needs to be expanded.

Damnit. I wish I wasn’t hours away from my nearest IMAX.

The FanFix poster series continues with this Summer’s release of Pacific Rim, and this poster may just be the best yet. The LA Times Hero Complex premiered the poster today, which was created by artist Sergio Grisanti. Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro had this to say about the beautifully crafted image:

“I am thrilled to introduce Sergio Grisanti to the world. For years he has been a highly respected commercial artist. When I was first exposed to his art for ‘Pacific Rim,’ I knew instantly that he was a powerhouse of talent. He created the Jaeger posters/card art we used at WonderCon. Without any hesitation I asked him to create this new Imax Fanfix art. Look at it closely — with a magnifying glass! So much going on! Such power! Such beauty! Sergio loves his Kaijus and his Mecha, and it shows. The poster, like my film, is a tribute to well-loved things. I wish all the fans the best time at the first Imax screenings of ‘Pacific Rim.’ Enjoy!”

The poster will be given to attendees of Pacific Rim‘s first IMAX screenings. Head here to see if your local theatre is participating! Take a look at Sergio’s poster below, and let us know what you think!

Marketing for the film has been superb so far, and today’s new TV spot is no different. The preview showcases the Kaiju destruction in many of Earth’s biggest cities. The world is looks like a pretty horrific place, so it’s no wonder we developed the Jaegers to fight back… I just wonder how things will turn out.

Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Following all of the awesome still photos and concept art from yesterday, Warner Bros has released both a new banner, and a new featurette for Guillermo Del Toro’s highly anticipated Pacific Rim.

The film’s second featurette (watch the first here) takes you onto the film’s giant sets, and shows you what it’s like to create and film a Jaeger. It’s an awesome look inside the film, and should help to further excite you for July 12th!

Pacific Rim draws ever closer, and I find myself more and more excited for the film every day. Every trailer, image, and piece of marketing for the film has looked incredible, and it’s going to be quite the experience to see the Kaiju and the Jaeger’s duke it out on the big screen.

The awesome folks over at Variety have just released a cool batch of new still images and concept art for the film. Plenty of the movie’s stars are showcased, and director Guillermo Del Toro looks damn excited to be realizing this dream. Take a look at the images below, and let us know what you think!

The video features lots of new footage, and helps explain something that I’ve been wondering about the film for quite some time: why does each Jaeger need two pilots?
