The Detective Pikachu film by Legendary Pictures has just started shooting in London this month.

A Twitter user by the name of HowardBud was actually around one of the filming locations and was able to snap a couple of pictures from the set. The area in the film is Police Plaza, located in Ryme City, the setting of the film. We also get a bulletin board that seems to indicate that some Pokemon have gone missing, and it seems we have some previews of their CG models as well. Among these are Machoke, Graveller, and Pancham.

Other pictures also include the logo for the Ryme City Police Department (shown in the article banner above), and the look of the police cars. The film is being directed by Goosebumps 2015 director Rob Letterman and is scheduled for release on May 10th, 2019.  Are you excited about the film or completely writing it off?

Hope your ready for the return of everyone’s favorite giant gorilla!

No, not Donkey Kong (good guess though), but King freaking Kong. A new trailer for the highly anticipated prequel Kong: Skull Island was just shown off last night during Jimmy Kimmel. (Do people still watch late night shows aside from some of the excerpts online?) The film has a slightly lighter tone than the previous one, but that doesn’t stop it from being pretty intense and exhilarating at some parts. Also, they actually show off Kong in all his glory! That’s more screen time than the new Godzilla had, right? Check out the trailer below! Are you excited for this film? Comment below and let us know!

Looks like the Detective Pikachu film has their writers on board!

Announced about a month ago, Legendary Pictures had secured the rights to a Detective Pikachu movie based off the upcoming Nintendo 3DS game, but nothing else has been revealed since then. Now, in an exclusive article for Variety, Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsch as well as Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman. The film still has not concrete release date or window, but this was a nice announcement to let Pokemon fans know that the film is currently in good hands.

What do you think about the choice of writers? Do you think they made a good decision? Make sure to tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: I’ve been itching to re-watch Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak since the very moment that the credits started rolling during my screening. The film shows off depth and beauty like only a Del Toro picture can, and the film’s unfortunate theatrical marketing had many moviegoers ignore the film as it simply looked like a B-horror film.

It’s not a horror at all, and it’s one of my favourite films of 2015. Jonathan and I talked about the film on Geekscape back in September, and I can’t wait to watch it again when it hits Blu-Ray on February 9th.

I’m a sucker for special features, and the Crimson Peak Blu-Ray won’t disappoint in that department, either. Here are the Blu-Ray exclusive features:

-I Remember Crimson Peak: A series of interviews with director Guillermo del Toro and his standout cast, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain.

-A Living Thing: An army of artisans was amassed to construct the Sharpe mansion on North America’s largest soundstage. Witness first-hand and in great detail the construction of Del Toro’s most elaborate set to date.

-A Primer on Gothic Romance: Employing his encyclopedic knowledge and passion for the genre, Guillermo del Toro traces the lineage of Gothic Romance in cinema. Using Crimson Peak as the basis, Del Toro outlines the history of cinematic terror and illuminates the differences between traditional scares and elevated horror.

-Crimson Phantoms: Del Toro’s approach to make-up effects is discussed by award-winning effects house DDT. In this piece, they offer an exclusive look inside their workshop, where they deconstruct the creation of the film’s most disturbing prosthetic effects. The discussion delves into the mythology of these elegant creatures and how Del Toro’s belief in the supernatural informed the design and narrative of the ghosts

-Hand Tailored Gothic: Costume designer Kate Hawley unravels her collaboration with Del Toro and reveals the symbolism constantly at play in the wardrobe’s design.

And the features that will be found on the DVD and Blu-Ray:

-Deleted Scenes

-The Light and Dark of Crimson Peak: Crimson Peak offers a stylized turn of the century with carefully crafted visuals that provide the perfect backdrop for Del Toro’s brand of psychological horror. Follow the phases of production to discover a booming America and a dark and removed England portrayed with a multi-layered sophistication unlike any seen in recent cinema.

-Beware Of Crimson Peak: Tom Hiddleston (Sir Thomas Sharpe) offers a walking tour of the many secret spaces in Allerdale Hall.

-Feature Commentary with co-writer and Director Guillermo Del Toro

Del Toro’s films are always ripe with amazing symbolism, and I cannot wait to hear what he has to say on the film’s commentary track.

Re-watch the Crimson Peak trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the release!

Briefly: A new trailer is set to debut tomorrow, but Legendary pictures has just debuted a fantastic new motion poster for Crimson Peak.

We’ll never get to see Del Toro’s touch on Silent Hills, but Crimson Peak looks freaking incredible. I had the fantastic opportunity to meet with Del Toro at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, as well as see a few props and pieces of the set. It’s safe to say that Crimson Peak has been one of my most anticipated films since that day.

You can take a look at the motion poster below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Crimson Peak hits theatres on October 16th, 2015!

Check out the new motion poster for #CrimsonPeak, and look for the new trailer tomorrow!

Briefly: This is some fantastic news.

I was beyond excited back in October 2013 when Legendary Pictures finally announced a sequel to Michael Dougherty’s celebrated Trick ‘r Treat, and the company has revealed that the world of Trick ‘r Treat AND Dougherty’s still mysterious Krampus are set to continue via graphic novels.

Legendary has done a great job with its film tie-ins to Pacific Rim and Godzilla, so I’m really hopeful for what they’re developing here. Trick ‘r Treat also happens to be my favourite Halloween themed movie, so I’ll eat up any continuation of this world that I can.

Dougherty said that “I’ve been having way too much fun working with Legendary and the rest of my team bringing the ancient legend of Krampus to the big screen, and I look forward to expanding the film’s dark Christmas mythology onto the comic page. And hopefully the fans who’ve been patiently waiting for TRICK ‘R TREAT 2 will enjoy this deeper peek into Sam’s world until he finally rises from the pumpkin patch once more. Happy Holidays.”

The Trick ‘r Treat graphic novel features stories by Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields, and Todd Casey, while Mark Andreyko will actually take care of writing it. Art will come from (yes) Fiona Staples, Zid, Stuart Sayger, and Stephen Byrne. Here’s the synopsis for the book:

The dark and twisted face of the cult horror hit Trick ‘R Treat is back… are you ready for the return of Sam?

With the official graphic novel Trick ‘r Treat, Legendary dares you to experience four all-new terrifying tales set in the universe ofthe ultimate Halloween anthology.

From the twisted imagination of series creator Dougherty (screenwriter of X-Men 2 and Superman Returns) and a top-notch team of horror storytellers and artists, comes this 4-part collection that paves the way for the Trick ‘r Treat film sequel. Across centuries of Halloween horror, wherever fear lies, Sam will be waiting.

The Krampus book features story by the same trio, and will be written by Brandon Seifert. This time, the art comes from Michael Montenat, Stuart Sayger, Maan House, and Christian DiBari. Here’s the synopsis:

YOU BETTER WATCH OUT…
If you want to survive the holidays, stay off the naughty list.

Legendary Comics presents Krampus, the official graphic novel based on the upcoming horror comedy from writer/director Michael Dougherty (creator of Trick ‘r Treat).

Unleashing the ancient Christmas demon Krampus and his maniacal holiday-themed henchmen, Krampus mixes fear, fun and festive thrills for an adventure that will change the way you see the holidays forever.

Trick ‘r Treat will release in October, and Krampus will hit stores in November. Take a look at the key art for Trick ‘r Treat below, and let us know if you’re as excited as I am!

I first heard about Guillermo del Toro’s, “masterpiece”, Crimson Peak last year at SDCC. Our booth neighbors at Legendary had an amazing booth display designed by the set designers of the film. When I took the tour, and learned about the effort that went into this TINY little hallway I instantly knew I wanted to see this movie. And after watching this trailer, I…I just need this film in my life!

Legendary Pictures’ Crimson Peak, a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim), written by del Toro & Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jim Beaver. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds… and remembers. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Callum Greene produce, and Jillian Share executive produces.

Did you see that shit?! SO ON BOARD! That hallway where the ghost came out of the floor? Yeah, I’VE BEEN THERE! Or I’ve been in an impressive simulation of that hallway on the SDCC convention floor.

Crimson Peak is set to hit theaters October 16th, 2015. Just in time for some Halloween fun!

Consider this proof that even if Hollywood decides to launch their own franchise based on something outside of it, that is no reason the originators can still do their own thing. F*ck everyone else.

HeroTaku has reported that Toho — the original studio behind the 1954 classic Gojira — will produce their own Godzilla film, bouncing off the success of this year’s Godzilla from Legendary Pictures.

Earlier this year at G-Fest false rumors began to spread about Toho would be working on reviving Godzilla for Japanese audiences… Now, as of today this rumor is a reality since Toho expects to release a new Godzilla film in 2016. This will be Toho’s first Godzilla in 12 years, since the 50th Anniversary when they released Godzilla Final Wars. The reason behind Toho’s new Godzilla is none other than due to the success of Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla, and heightened fan support! Legendary Pictures’ Godzilla directed by Gareth Edwards has proved to be an amazing success opening in 63 countries and earning over $470 million worldwide.

HeroTaku goes on to say that Toho is assembling the staff now and shooting is projected to go from summer to fall in 2015.

This is kind of amazing. Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla was pretty phenomenal in its own right, but in the current movie climate there’s an unwritten rule (I’m assuming, I’m sure there are lawyers who like to get in the way of these things) that a Hollywood franchise from something pretty not Hollywood is suspended when the Hollywood franchise still has legs. That Toho found some way to continue doing their own Godzilla concurrently with the Hollywood series is awesome.

But not unprecedented. The infamous 1998 Godzilla was the Hollywood product that ran in the midst of Toho’s Godzilla series, with Godzilla 2000 coming after. Yet, the big difference here is time. In 2014, almost everyone can know about everything if they want. Everything intersects with everything. Trailers and information about Toho’s Godzilla might run on the same websites that will also cover Legendary Pictures’ version.

For fans of the genre and of the Big G himself, this is a great time to be ecstatic.

It was inevitable, and I’m so glad it’s official. According to The Wrap, Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have revealed that the previously announcedGodzillasequel will drop on June 8th, 2018 and it will feature Godzilla punching the crap out of Mothra, Rodan, and Ghidora. Or so they said at Comic-Con a few weeks ago.

Director Gareth Edwards is confirmed to return, but he wants “a break from all pressure of doing a major franchise with all fanboy opinions that go with that.” I don’t blame him, before Godzilla he did one little movie before stepping up to the big leagues. Anyone would be exhausted.

The first movie did well financially to ensure a new franchise for Warner Bros. It starred Bryan Cranston, a jacked Aaron Taylor-Johnston, and Elizabeth Olson, but it is unknown at the moment if any of them are to return.

You may look at 2018 and think, “Oh, that’s not too long of a wait,” but keep in mind that 2018 is four years from now. Where were you four years ago? I was sitting in the theater for Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. I also couldn’t legally drink. It’s a little absurd that a sequel can be announced this long in advance, right? Or am I just crazy?

What do you hope to see in the sequel? How much did you enjoy this year’s film?

San Diego Comic-Con is a blast, isn’t it?

We’re in the midst of the convention’s second full day, and after checking out most of the floor and a lot of the offsite events (look for more on those later), the Legendary Entertainment booth is without a doubt one of the coolest experiences of the con (just like last year).

This year, instead of a gigantic warehouse, Legendary is showing off its talent by creating a mind-blowing experience in a tiny space. This consists of two events: the Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery and Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot.

The Crimson Peak Gothic Gallery is a physical experience handcrafted by Guillermo del Toro himself, fans will get a glimpse behind the curtain of Crimson Peak and an early tease of the ultimate haunted house. Designed in the look of one of the sets of the movie, the Gothic Gallery is a living breathing gallery of curiosities that includes props, costumes, and an atmospheric soundscape designed by Academy Award®Winner Randy Thom.

LEGENDARY_CP_IMAGE2

I had the amazing opportunity to be taken through the gallery by Guillermo Del Toro himself, and hearing him describe the art,  intricacies, and incredible design of the Gothic Gallery and the film’s mansion and props made me incredibly excited for a movie that we still don’t know a lot about. Del Toro wrote Crimson Peak over eight years ago, and after speaking with Del Toro about the film, I’m beyond sure that it will be worth the wait. He did say that we’ll see a teaser at the Legendary Entertainment panel on Saturday, so hopefully it’ll release online afterwards!

Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot is the next evolution of the thrilling universe Legendary is creating with director Guillermo del Toro. Created by the leading pioneers of virtual reality, Oculus VR, the attraction delivers a new benchmark in virtual reality experiences as fans will step into a fully-realized Jaeger Combat Simulator and experience what it feels like to pilot a 250-story robot. Created with original film assets from Industrial Light & Magic and developed within Unreal Engine 4, Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot provides a thrilling first-person battle between Gipsy Danger and the kaiju codenamed Knifehead.

LEGENDARY_PR_1
Jaeger Pilot was my first Oculus Rift experience, and it was freaking incredible. I’d seen countless videos of people freaking out on the roller coaster and other demos, but I had no idea just how truly immersive VR could be until I stepped inside a Jaeger. This was an experience that I could do again and again (and again), and not tire of. It’s tough to describe the feeling, but after removing the Oculus headset it was crystal clear to me that VR is the future of interactive entertainment. With the Jaeger Pilot experience being so cool, so early on, I cannot wait to see what VR develops into.

The Legendary booth is #3920, and is right next to Geekscape. Here’s how you can get into the booth yourself:

Legendary

Briefly: We’ve heard rumours for what seems like forever, and based on the first film’s performance we weren’t sure that it would ever happen, but Guillermo Del Toro himself has just announced that Pacific Rim 2 is officially in production.

Del Toro is working with The Avengers writer Zak Penn and Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham on the project, but another film isn’t all that Legendary has in store for us. We’ll also be getting a Pacific Rim animated series, and the comic book series that began with movie tie-in Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero will also continue.

Speaking to Buzzfeed, Del Toro said that “The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.”

As a huge fan of the first film, I’d be happy to see anything new from this universe. A new film, an animated series, and a comic book series? I’m on board for everything.

Take a look at Del Toro’s announcement below, and let us know if you’re excited! Pacific Rim 2 will hit theatres on April 7th, 2017.

We’ve been waiting for what seems like forever, but Godzilla is finally on the horizon. The film will launch on May 16th, and as you know by our constant sharing of every image, trailer, clip, and featurette, we’re damned excited. Today, I had a chance to chat with Max Borenstein, the film’s screenwriter and co-writer of the excellent Godzilla: Awakening graphic novel (which hits stores on May 7th). Here’s what Max had to say:

DK: First up, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself? Who is Max Borenstein?

MB: (laughs) Who is Max Borenstein? Well, I am a writer and filmmaker, I grew up in Los Angeles, and I’m a huge fan of many genres of film. I started out by directing my own film in college, and since then I’ve started doing some dramatic stuff; I wrote a movie about Jimi Hendrix and did a lot of character based drama stuff. Then I started getting opportunities to write bigger tentpole films and ‘Godzilla’ has been the most exciting and amazing creative experience of my career thus far.

DK: Right into ‘Godzilla’. How much did you love the 1998 film?

MB: (laughs… profusely) Does that answer your question?

DK: Haha. Yeah, that’s pretty much what I was expecting. Seriously though, were you very familiar with the franchise before coming aboard as screenwriter? If so, what’s been your favourite film?

MB: I was familiar with the franchise as a kid, and I had refreshed myself when I got involved. What really excited me was rewatching the original, but seeing for the first time the Japanese cut, which I had never seen growing up. That has become my favourite Godzilla film. I just love it. I love a lot of the films for different reasons, but that one I think is an apotheon on its own. There’s something very special about it as a stand-alone film, and it uses the monster movie genre as a metaphor for something really harrowing and resonant.

1954 Godzilla
1954 Godzilla

DK: What do you think makes a successful ‘Godzilla’ film, and what makes some of them unsuccessful?

MB: I can only speak creatively. Certainly, success in that other sense I think only the movie gods understand, but I do think that the interesting thing about Godzilla films is that there is no one way, there’s no one coherent Godzilla. There are many versions and he’s kind of evolved over the years in different iterations, representing different things appropriate to different eras. That’s one of the things that’s so interesting. Godzilla is kind of this vessel that can contain multitudes in an interesting way, from the more serious harrowing original, getting more campy , very 60’s, and then being rebooted in the 80’s and getting darker and more appropriate to those times and the different fears which kind of transitioned from nuclear stuff to environmental themes. I don’t know if there’s a secret formula but I think that what’s so incredible about it is its ability as a character and as a franchise to have this kind of extended life, where it’s ever appropriate. As long as people are thinking about it and reinventing it in interesting ways that speak to the times, I think to me, that’s what makes a Godzilla film especially resonant and successful beyond just the spectacle and fun and being well made. If anything sets certain films apart from the rest of the pack, it’s that thematic resonance that they manage to achieve.

DK: That’s an absolutely perfect answer.

MB: Cool.

DK: What challenges did you face developing a script that would appeal to mainstream North American audiences, while ensuring that it could still captivate Japanese moviegoers?

MB: In a very big way, all audiences want a great story told. There are very specific audiences for certain films, and then there’s the general audience for those same films. Obviously, Godzilla has a rabid fanbase, and many fanbases that appreciate different things. I don’t think that any one is probably exactly the same in terms of what he or she loves the most about this franchise, so I think that my aim certainly, and the aim of everyone involved in the film was not to try to overthink and strategize how to capture every audience, it was all about how do we make the best film that someone that had never heard of Godzilla would come in and be as captivated by it as we are. It’s the thing that drives us to want to make the movie to begin with, is our love for this franchise, but in order to really do that justice I think that you have to step outside and make a film that is going to convince someone who has no love and no interest going in, to fall in love with the franchise and with the character in the same way that we have. That was really our guiding principle, and I think that the assumption, and I hope this is true, is that if we aim high and try to make something that we think is the best film that we can make, it’s going to capture a North American audience, it’s going to capture the Japanese audience, and it’s going to hopefully capture audiences around the world. I think that that’s really the only honest way to approach any kind of process like this, is to try and respect the integrity of what you’re making.

Cover art for ‘Godzilla: Awakening’

DK: You also co-wrote the Godzilla: Awakening graphic novel. How did the idea for that prequel book come to be, and what was the biggest difference in writing that over the screenplay?

MB: That’s a good question. It came to be because Legendary is an awesome company, and they have a comic book division, and Thomas Tull, who is the Grand Poobah there and runs the show, is a giant Godzilla fan. He thought it would be rad to do a comic book that ties in to our reinvented or rebooted Godzilla universe. That was something that I was really excited about. I wrote it with my cousin, who I’m very close to and have been trying to find something to work on together. He’s a brilliant writer, he’s mainly in computer science and technology and he teaches and studies at MIT at the media lab. We got to collaborate on that which was a really wonderful process. Certainly the cool thing about writing the comic book, which I’ve actually only recently started to dabble in, this is really my first comic book, you have a lot more control in some ways in terms of the kind of story you’re able to tell because you don’t have to think about budget, or what you can afford or what you can actually get reality or CGI to help you achieve, you can just imagine it, and then it is so. Then again, there are certain constraints in terms of what that medium will allow storytelling-wise, which is a fascinating learning curve. That was something that was really fun and exhilarating to do. It made it a very fresh process for both of us. Creatively, Legendary has just been very supportive throughout the entire development of the film and so maybe the cliché or expected answer would be that we had so much more freedom developing the comic book than the film, because with the film there are more cooks in the kitchen. The truth is that everyone has always been on the same page in terms of wanting this movie and the whole franchise to continue. We all wanted it to be as great as it could be, so everyone has been extremely supportive and collaborative this whole time, and it was a very fun process.

DK: In writing the screenplay OR the graphic novel, were there any strange or unconventional ideas that were quickly disregarded?

MB: (laughs) Every idea under the sun was contemplated and disregarded at some point along the way, and that’s the only way, I think, that I know how to approach the creative process. I think the answer is that no, I probably can’t really talk about them. If I could even remember them it would only be interesting within the context, and also part of the beauty of getting to produce a finished product is sometimes not having to show what you looked like along the way.

DK: I didn’t think you’d be able to talk about it, but I had to try! On that note, do you see more comic book or graphic novel work in the cards for you?

MB: Do I see more? I love that. It was incredibly fun and fulfilling in a different way. It’s certainly faster, I mean I’d been writing the film for three years, or maybe more by the time it comes out, and the graphic novel took a few months. It was unbelievable to see your work and your words take shape and visual form that quickly. That’s very gratifying and there are a couple of other ideas that I’ve been dabbling with with Greg. So I sure hope so.

GodzillaStill

DK: Edwards, of course, planned Godzilla to work as a standalone film, but what classic Toho monster would you like to see in a sequel? What’s your favourite Toho creature?

MB: Well Godzilla is my favourite Toho monster, but if we’re expanding… That’s a good question. I don’t have one favourite, I mean really love King Ghidorah and I think that the really interesting thing is that all of the monsters are great in their context, and when you see this film the question is always about what is going to fit into the tone of the universe that we’ve created. We spent a long, hard time making sure that we were servicing that tone in the creation of the MUTOs, and if we were given the opportunity to work with any of the classic Toho monsters, I think that would be really rad. It would be about approaching it in the same way, in trying to bring them into this universe in a way that felt coherent and plausible within reality.

DK: What was your reaction to seeing this version of Godzilla move and roar on-screen for the first time?

MB: It’s the same reaction that I have every time I see it. It’s impossible to describe in words because it has more to do with the churning of the gut and the tingling of the spine and hair standing up on the back of your neck. It’s really a kick. I’m in it, and so it’s hard to step back and go ‘Holy shit, a year ago I was writing these words on the page, and now I’m watching this unbelievable spectacle come to life’. It’s a monster that looks cooler and more bad-ass than I could ever have imagined him.

DK: To finish up, the Godzilla subreddit wanted me to thank you, Gareth, and everyone involved in the project, for making Godzilla awesome and really relevant again. Is there a message that I can pass on to them, and to the rest of Godzilla’s fans for you?

MB: That’s thrilling and awesome. Part of the crazy thing about getting to make a movie in this day and age where fan reaction is immediate and vocal and ever present is the beauty of seeing people respond, hopefully positively to what you made, but also the terror of what people are going to say. The fan reactions thus far have been so heartening. I’d really like to thank them.

DK: Perfect. Thanks so much for taking the time today Max, and I absolutely cannot wait to see the movie, it looks amazing.

MB: Absolutely. My pleasure. Thank you Derek.

You can pre-order Godzilla: Awakening from Amazon, and you know where to get your movie tickets. How excited are you for the film?

Looks like Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson didn’t give up on the idea of working together after Guillermo left behind the directing duties on The Hobbit!

Today, Universal Pictures and Warner Bros announced that both Jackson and Del Toro would team up for what the pair are calling “their dream project”: ‘King Kong VS Godzilla’! Legendary Pictures, the production company behind this summer’s Godzilla and last summer’s Del Toro helmed Kaiju epic Pacific Rim, will produce the joint effort for both the studios and the creatives.

As you’ll remember, Legendary is now on the Universal lot, owners of King Kong, who put out Peter Jackson’s 2005 Kong remake. The production company was formerly on the Warner Bros lot, the company that released Pacific Rim and this summer’s Gareth Edwards directed Godzilla reboot.

Obviously, a movie the size of King Kong VS Godzilla may just need two studios to bring it to the screen. Warner Bros is no stranger to this, having partnered with MGM on Peter Jackson’s current Hobbit trilogy, and dual studio productions seem to be becoming the norm in this tent-pole driven day and age.

The only question now is… who will direct and who will produce? Or is there room in the director’s chair for both of these cinematic titans?

King Kong VS Godzilla is scheduled for a November 2016 release.

Just announced over at MTV News (does Sway still work over there?), JAKKS Pacific has released some super specific details about their upcoming three-foot long Godzilla action figure. Check out some photos below courtesy of our friends over at MTV.

As you can plainly tell, this sucker is over three-feet long and features some hyper realistic “tail swinging action!”. The most intriguing part about this whole release is that this is our first unobstructed view of the new Godzilla. This particular sculpt is a very happy departure from the very maligned Godzilla from 1998. More closely resembling the monster from later films, such as Godzilla: Final Wars.

You can get your hands on the lizard this week at Toys R’ Us for about $45, and nationwide in May. You can see the film Godzilla May 16th!

Some reason I’m not believing in this kids enthusiasm.

Last week we had the sad news that Warcraft, the World of Warcraft movie, was pushed from a December 2015 release to a ‘sometime in 2016’ release (probably to avoid going up directly against Star Wars), but  today Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertainment gave us all something to celebrate. Or at least, gossip wildly over.

That’s right, some of the cast for Warcraft has been announced (note, there’s no character designation as of yet, so we know who’s in the movie but not who they’re playing) and they are (drum roll): Ben Foster (The Messenger, 3:10 to Yuma, X-Men: The Last Stand), Travis Fimmel (Vikings), Paula Patton (Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, Precious), Toby Kebbell (Wrath of Titans, War Horse), and Rob Kazinsky (True Blood, Pacific Rim). Dominic Cooper (Captain America, An Education) is expected to finalize his deal with Legendary soon.

From left to right: Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Rob Kazinksy, Dominic Cooper.
From left to right: Ben Foster, Travis Fimmel, Paula Patton, Toby Kebbell, Rob Kazinksy, Dominic Cooper.

Details on the movie have been scarce, but we do know that production is slated to start early next year, and the movie will have two iconic characters from Warcraft lore: Lothar and Durotan. Which means the movie (or some parts of it, at any rate) will take place a generation prior to the events in World of Warcraft and, nicely, tie in to the WoW expansion set to come out next year, Warlords of Draenor.

Guillermo Del Toro’s summer blockbuster robot vs monsters movie, Pacific Rim, has been released on Blu-Ray/DVD.

pacific-rim-blu-ray-box-art

The movie is available as a Blu-ray 3D combo pack, a Blu-ray combo pack and a two-disc DVD pack. All three offer the theatrical release of the film (the Blu-ray 3d option offers the theatrical release in 3D) and the Ultraviolet for downloading and streaming the film to various devices.

The blu-ray packs come with numerous special features (a whole separate disc of them, in fact), including a audio commentary by Guillermo Del Toro, the Director’s notebook, a in-depth look at drift space, the digital art of Pacific Rim, focus points, deleted scenes and a blooper reel.

Those who saw the movie in the theaters won’t see anything new when viewing the theatrical release: the film is still a loud, brawling tween boy’s dream, impossibly large monsters bashing against robots who differ from the Transformers only in that they lack the Transformer’s finesse and subtlety. While it certainly doesn’t hold up to a in-depth analysis, it’s fun, with effects and a soundtrack/score that drive the movie forward towards its (predictable) end.

The special features are entertaining and interesting for fans of the film; they are the cherry on top of the sundae–provided you like ice cream.

Pacific Rim is available on Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack for $44.95, on Blu-ray Combo Pack for $35.99 and on 2-disc DVD Special Edition for $28.98.

Geekscape Score: 3.5/5

Briefly: Now I really wish that I made it to last night’s screening (I’m currently sitting the airport awaiting my flight to Los Angeles).

Following last night’s very special screening of Trick ‘r Treat at the Egyptian theatre in Los Angeles, Legendary Pictures announced that a Trick ‘r Treat sequel is in the works with original director Michael Dougherty at the helm.

This is awesome news! After never having a theatrical release (even though it definitely deserved it), Trick ‘r Treat quickly became a cult classic, and I hear about more and more people discovering it each and every year. Dougherty is a talented director, and I really can’t wait to see what he and his team come up with for this sequel.

You can rewatch the Q&A from last night’s screening below, and let us know if you’re excited! There’s no real info on the film yet, but we’ll be sure to share it as soon as it’s announced!

Cult favorite Trick ‘R Treat is set to close out Beyond Fest this Monday, October 28th at 7:30 p.m. with a theatrical screening and a subsequent panel which will include Dylan Baker (Steven), Brian Cox (Mr. Kregg), Quinn Lord (Sam) and Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Schrader). Seth Green (Dads, Robot Chicken) will be moderating the panel. Fans who may not be able to get to the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles can watch the entire event via live-streaming on Legendary’s Facebook page.

We recently had the opportunity to interview Dylan Baker (The Good Wife, Smash) and Quinn Lord (The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Once Upon a Time) about their experiences filming Trick ‘R Treat, and now we’re here to share their insights and on-set antics with you.

Quinn Lord (Sam) and Dylan Baker (Steven) will be at the theatrical screening of Trick 'R Treat, Monday, Oct. 28th.

Q. What drew you to this film/role initially?

Baker: I was really intrigued by the script, and with Michael’s (Dougherty, director) excitement about the holiday, his love of it. He really imbued the script with this sense of Halloween having a guardian spirit; that the rules of Halloween were, in fact, very strict and were enforced by this really spooky, child-like presence, Sam. And that these rules had to be taught; that my role, the Principal role, was about really being serious about teaching children the importance of honoring these unwritten rules and traditions of Halloween.

Lord: I don’t really remember the process exactly, but I do remember being in the auditioning room with Michael (Dougherty, Director) and I had just done the audition for Sam, and I asked Michael if he would like to see what I thought Sam would do if he had a cat? And Michael said sure, so I improv’ed, started walking around the room and mimed gently petting a cat and saying (creepy voice):  “Nice kitty.”  And then I picked it up by the tail and just walked off-screen. And I think that might have been it.

Q. What was your favorite part about filming Trick ‘R Treat?

Baker: Well, the set was just a lot of fun. Michael–Dougherty, the Director–Michael was a great guy to work with, he was always joking–one of the actresses, Leslie Bibb (Emma), she was really easily scared. And Michael used to do things–this one time he hid in her trailer and when she went in during break he jumped out. She screamed bloody murder.

Lord: I had this one scene where I had to throw an egg at Charlie (Brett Kelly); and when he turns around, I flip him the bird and run away. I remember thinking it was a ton of fun to do, for a seven-year-old.

Q. What was your favorite part of the movie?

Baker: Ha, that’s a hard question. Every aspect of it was just so much fun; Anna Paquin’s character was amazing. And it certainly gave her a taste for blood that has proven quite successful for her!

Lord: The four girls–spoiler alert (laughs)–the whole twist at the end of that story, I really enjoyed that; but my favorite part isn’t a finished scene, actually. I really liked wearing the mask; getting a mold made of my face–they just dumped all this plaster on me and I was like ‘ahhh’–and having this latex mask for the moment when the burlap sack  is removed, that was really cool. When I was wearing the mask I could only see out of the top corner of the mask and it was really interesting to me.

Q. Why do you think this film as become such a fan favorite?

Baker: Well, it’s really one of a kind, isn’t it? I mean, I can’t think of another movie that explores the traditions and rules of Halloween like this one; Halloween even gets a mascot, in Sam, which isn’t something that had been done. And it combines it all with some horror, suspense, some humor; and the fans just love it. It’s a movie you can watch over and over–in fact, I ran into Brian Cox in London a few months ago and we were talking about Trick ‘R Treat and how enduring it is, and how the fans are just so appreciative of it.

Lord: All these people have enjoyed this movie for so long, and I think the key is because you can watch it over and over again; I think you can watch it ten times in a month before you start to know exactly what is going to happen in each scene; I watch it every year at Halloween; because it’s so re-watchable. It allows you to catch different things, almost like easter eggs. It’s almost like watching a new movie, of re-experiencing it, that “oh, this is going to be awesome!” feeling.

Q. Trick ‘R Treat will be live-streamed during it’s theatrical screening on Oct 28th; what are your thoughts on Facebook and other  social media in the film industry?

Baker: I think it’s amazing. It’s such an amazing tool–I mean, the whole live streaming is great, but also there’s the fact that it just adds so much to who you can reach. I just left the Heartland Film Festival, where I was showing my newest movie, 23 Blast, and Facebook was such a huge help just in getting the word out to people in Indianapolis and letting them know we were going to be there, and getting information out about the movie and the festival. I think it’s great.

Lord: They play such a large role. It allows for so much communication across such great distances. It plays such a big role in movies these days; people can participate in things if they can’t make it in person and share their art and thoughts with other people who like the same thing.

Tickets for the screening on October 28th can be purchased from the Legendary Facebook page.

Briefly: This looks like a fantastic print. I just may have to pick one up from Odd City since I can’t make the screening myself (I loved the movie, but won’t arrive in Los Angeles until the next day).

Fans of Michael Dougherty’s cult classic horror movie Trick ‘r Treat will have another way to celebrate this film’s theatrical screening/panel this coming Monday as Odd City Entertainment will be releasing a Trick ‘r Treat limited edition print by JAMES FOSDIKE to commemorate the event! All fans who attend the screening will receive one of the limited edition prints (image attached). Additionally, 100 numbered prints and 85 glow-in-the-dark variant edition prints will go on sale at the Odd City Entertainment store the following day. The poster was printed with eight inks on French Whip Cream paper and printed by Half and Half.

“I was very honoured to be asked to illustrate a poster for Trick ‘r Treat,” Fosdike said. “It’s a wonderfully clever and surprising Halloween film with such an iconic creepy little guy at it’s center. I loved the interweaving storylines, it reminded me a lot of Creepshow, which I loved as a kid. I wanted to put as much of the story as I could on the page, giving the image a comic-book touch with the background panelling, and adding a special frightening touch to Sam. Turn the lights off and you’ll see…”

The Odd City poster is just one of many ways that fans can experience this special event, even if they are not able to attend the screening in person. Both the showing of the film and the panel, which will be attended by Dougherty, who directed and wrote the movie, along with cast members Dylan Baker, Brian CoxQuinn LordJean-Luc Bilodeau, and other special guests, will be live-streamed nationally on Legendary’s Facebook page at facebook.com/legendary. The livestream will begin at 7:30 pm PST. Fans can tune in to watch the film and panel,  join in on the conversation, and enter to win Blu-ray copies of the film!

The film has such a cult status now that I could definitely see screenings becoming a yearly event. I would love to experience Trick ‘r Treat on the big screen! It’s easily my favourite Halloween film, and I had a feeling that it would be something special from the moment I first watched the trailer.

Will you be attending the screening on Monday? Sound out below!

Trick ‘R Treat, the cult favorite that has won over a dedicated fan base since it’s release to DVD in 2009, is airing on October 28th at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles during Beyond-Fest. After the screening, audience members will be able to have a panel talk-back with writer/director Michael Dougherty and several members of the cast.

Can’t make it to LA? Not to worry, the screening will also be streamed–live–on Legendary’s Facebook page. Viewers can converse with each other so long as they are logged into their Facebook or Twitter account; follow #trickrtreatlive for a call out for questions, and your question/comment might get chosen to get read aloud during the Q&A.

Sam, the spirit of Halloween.
Sam, the spirit of Halloween.

Trick ‘R Treat was the directorial debut of Michael Dougherty (co-writer, Superman Returns and X-Men 2) and stars Dylan Baker, Anna Paquin, Leslie Bibb and Brian Cox. Released in 2007, the film earned critical success on the Festival circuit before Warner Bros. and Legendary released it on DVD in 2009.  Earning rave reviews and a passionate following, Trick ‘R Treat, as Dougherty says, “grows year by year. It continues to get its legs and grow. The fans have a lot to do with that…dressing up as Sam, or getting Trick ‘R Treat tattoos.”

The movie received a 85% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes; IGN gave it a 8 out of 10, Dread Central a 5 out of 5. Bloody Disgusting gave it a 8 out of 10, who also ranked Trick ‘R Treat ninth in their ‘Top 20 Horror Films of the Decade’ list and said “[Trick ‘R Treat] is so good that its lack of a theatrical release borders on the criminal.”

Trick ‘R Treat takes place in a small town in Ohio one Halloween night. In four separate, interwoven tales (a la Pulp Fiction) the film follows inhabitants with secrets, inhabitants with strange habits, inhabitants with lots of skeletons in their closets, including: a high school principal struggling to raise his son and get in the occasional serial killing; the college co-ed struggling with peer pressure to lose her virginity; a newly married couple who’s divergent views on Halloween prove tragic; and a group of teens who’s not-so-innocent prank has terrible consequences. Each tale reveals more about the holiday of Halloween–the traditions, the myths and their caretaker, a creepy toddler called Sam.

Dougherty says he “wanted to give Halloween a mascot. Halloween didn’t have that yet and I felt there was something there, waiting to be discovered.”

Why make the spirit of Halloween a small child? “I wanted to keep that careful balance of creepy and cute and innocent about the holiday.” explained Dougherty.

All of the key cast members of the cult horror classic will be in attendance for the one night only screening of the movie and subsequent panel, which is slated to close Beyond Fest. Dylan Baker and Brian Cox will headline the even along with Doughertyt. Also slated to attend are Quinn Lord, who played the horror icon Sam in the movie along with Jean-Luc Bilodeau. Moderating the panel will be actor Seth Green (Dads, Robot Chicken). Some surprise guests are also expected to attend the panel!

Briefly: Screen Junkies Honest Trailers has to be one of my favourite series on YouTube, and now they’ve taken on one of my favourite films of the Summer, Pacific Rim.

It sure points out some (a lot of) glaring issues that the film may have had, but it also points out just how awesome it was.

Take a look at the latest instalment of Honest Trailers below, and let us know what you thought of Pacific Rim!

Briefly: The Pacific Rim Blu-Ray is now less than a week away from release (I hope you’re picking it up), and a fantastic blooper reel from the set has leaked online.

It clocks in at a cool four minutes, and certainly does a good job of showing just how fun the production of Pacific Rim was. I really can’t wait to pick up the Blu-Ray and find out what other goodies are in store. It was one of the best moviegoing experiences that I had this year, and I can’t wait to jump back into that world.

Take a look at the reel below, and let us know what you think! The Pacific Rim Blu-Ray hits stores on October 15th!

Looking for more Pacific Rim? Screenwriter Travis Beacham was a guest on the show earlier this Summer!

Briefly: Now that the Summer movie season is officially over, it’s pretty safe to say that Pacific Rim was one of my most enjoyable moviegoing experiences all year. It may not have broken the box office records that it could have, and it may never get a sequel since apparently nobody saw it, but Pacific Rim was a hell of a lot of fun.

Of course, the film also had some of the best visual effects that I’ve ever seen. I still recall my first time viewing the movie, and at multiple points throughout thinking “how the hell did they make this?” It’s that incredible.

Mirada Studios was in charge of creating the film’s two-minute prologue, and they’ve released a cool new video demonstrating some jarring before and after shots. It’s a fantastic watch for fans of the film or visual effects in general, and I simply had to share! Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you thought of Pacific Rim!

To excite you for your midnight showing later tonight (you have purchased your tickets, right?), Warner Bros. has just released an awesome new clip for Pacific Rim.

The video, which is nearly three minutes in length, shows a stunning extended look at the Jaeger Gypsy Danger. The clip is made up of a series of long takes, which literally had me saying ‘wow’ at multiple points throughout.

I won’t spoil it for you. This thing is beautiful. Watch the new clip below, and let us know if you’re excited! Pacific Rim hits theatres tonight, and seeing as it’s one of the few original films this Summer, it definitely deserves your cash.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes – a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) – who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Four. More. Days.

Pacific Rim is finally just around the corner, and Warner Bros. has just debuted a fantastic new behind-the-scenes featurette for the film. A multitude of cast and crew members are interviewed during the video, including Ron Perlman, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and more.

You must know by now just how excited we are for Pacific Rim. We even had a fantastic opportunity to sit down with Pacific Rim screenwriter Travis Beacham, both on the show, and in a private interviewPacific Rim is set to be one of the surprise hits of the Summer, and if all of the early buzz has been any indication, this is one film that you need to see in the biggest theatre that you possibly can.

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know just how excited you are for the movie!

Just one more week of waiting until Pacific Rim finally hits theatres, and Warner Bros. has just released another two TV spots for the film. Just like the rest of the world, I really can’t wait to get in line for this one.

The spots are titled “Classified” and ” Fight Critics”. Each features some new footage, and does a damn good job of further exciting me for the picture. Take a look at each new preview below, and let us know what you think!

After Pacific Rim’s world premiere just a few days ago, Twitter buzz for the film has been very steady. The bulk of it seems extremely positive, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Check out some prominent quotes about the movie below, and be sure to let us know how excited you are. Pacific Rim hits theatres next Friday, July 12th.

Sounds pretty good, huh?

The Pacific Rim marketing just keeps coming! Less than one day after two new character posters were revealed for the film, Warner Bros. has released another two posters, plus a new clip to further excite you for the coming epic.

The first poster features Australian Jaeger Striker Eureka, while the second spotlights ‘Category 4’ Kaiju Leatherback. The new clip look similar to footage we’ve seen in the recent trailers, but looks like the setup for an intense battle.

Take a look at everything below, and let us know what you think! Pacific Rim hits theatres on July 12th! The movie’s screenwriter, Travis Beacham, was just a guest on Geekscape!

Pacific Rim hits theatres in less than two weeks, and Warner Bros. has definitely begun a heavy marketing push for the film. Yesterday, four fantastic new clips were released, and the studio has just unveiled two new character posters.

One image features the monstrous ‘Category 4’ Kaiju Otachi, while the other spotlights American Jaeger Gipsy Danger. The two are set to face-off in the feature, which should definitely make for an interesting matchup.

Legendary Pictures highly anticpated Pacific Rim is less than two weeks away from release, and the studio has just unveiled four new clips from the film.

Each clip takes us through a different scene from the movie, including a Kaiju/Jaeger battle, training, arguing, and some black-market dealing. Each and every one of them looks absolutely fantastic.

Guillermo Del Toro’s highly anticipated Pacific Rim is now just two weeks away, and Warner Bros. has just released a new featurette for the film.

Titled Under Attack, the featurette shows off plenty of new footage from the movie, and features Guillermo Del Toro, Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, and Charlie Day speaking about their roles in the groundbreaking project.
