Josh and I were fortunate enough to get a chance to sit down with Hearthstone’s Production Director Jason Chayse at Blizzard’s Ice Cream Citadel during San Diego Comic Con last week. Josh is a newcomer to the popular digital card game, while Courtney is an avid Hearthstone fan and former World of Warcraft addict.

Death Knights distributing delicious cool treats in their air conditioned paradise. We may have loitered to take advantage of the A/C.

Courtney: I was confused about the new update when I first saw it, because it seemed like you could only get the expansion if you paid for it. But you can actually get the packs by playing like in the past?

Jason: Yeah so we’re actually changing the single player content. We’ve taken the best aspects of adventures and expansions and fused them into this sort of uber Hearthstone release.

So you’ll have a pack you can open, and on top of that there are going to be eight free missions, and there will be an introductory prologue, and once you defeat the introductory prologue everyone will be given a free Death Knight hero card, which will be a new card type we’ll be releasing.

There will be two more wings of missions after that, which will be free, and you’ll earn card packs by defeating those. At the very end you’ll fight the Lich King. This is also something new , he’ll play slightly differently depending on what class you play against him with. “Ok, so this is Rexxar, the hunter, so we’ll play this way against you, or Jaina the mage, so we’ll play this against you, and that’s the first time we’ve tried that too.

Courtney: That’s been the way I’ve defeated previous heroes in the past, realising that the would be weaker against a certain class.

Jason: Yeah! It should give you a run for your money.

Courtney: With Hearthstone, it’s obviously based on World of Warcraft, are you going to be introducing any of the other Blizzard franchises like Blizzard like Overwatch or Diablo?

Jason: You know, we feel like we have a lot of room still within the Warcraft universe to keep expanding with Hearthstone. There are no shortage of amazing characters or locations or stories we have left to tell. Every once in awhile you’ll see one of the other franchises bleed in, like there’s the Overwatch cardback, there are some Starcraft flavored card backs, but we want to do in it a way that will still feel like they can be part of the Warcraft universe.

Courtney: And there are going to be new boards? My favourite part is to click on the different little things while I’m waiting.

Jason: Our art team does an amazing job with those each time. They come up with amazing things you can trigger and discover. There will be a brand new Ice Rend flavored board that would be appropriate for the next release.

Josh: I literally just downloaded the game, so I don’t have as much time to play yet. Learning a new card game is overwhelming at the start, but everything seems so accessible, so easy to get into so, it’s easy to see why it’s resonated with so many people. You can either spend a lot of time with it and build huge card libraries or just play with friends for fun. And having that tie to Warcraft is great as well, because if you’re not ready to jump into a totally new card game but you have that familiarity with Warcraft, it helps ease the transition.

Jason: If there are particular characters you remember from your Warcraft days, you can go “Oh here’s Ragnaros doing his stuff, or here is a classic character, the heroes you know, like Thrall  Uther. But what you said about making it accessible to new players to get in, that was a big priority for us when we were first designing Hearthstone. We were always huge believers in collectable card games, and we play a ton of them going way  back when, and we felt the fun was  buried too deep for people who had never played them before, so that was our main goal. How do we take the fun parts that people love about collectable card games and make them a little easier to access so people could get in and start having fun in the first five minutes.

Josh: Now that you mention other card games, what other sources did you draw inspiration from?

Jason: From all of them. We had people who played Magic the Gathering and the other classic games but we  had people who played some digital ones that have been around , so we drew a lot of inspiration from all of them. So we thought about what we loved from the genre as a whole, and how we could hold onto that, and what we could improve on.

Josh: With the new inclusion of the Lich King, if you could chose any character from Warcraft that isn’t in the game yet, which would be the big addition you would want to make to Hearthstone?

Jason: That’s a good question. I think we’re always looking for ways to stay current with the new expansions that the World of Warcraft team is coming out with, and how that could be introduced in a meaningful way. We’ve added a lot of them, a good example is with the Whispers of the Old Gods expansion, there were some classic old gods, these beings from outer space, and we were really inspired by that, and had to figure out who these gods were and did a lot of design with the original World of Warcraft team to realise what these gods look like because they hadn’t been fully sketched out before. So who’s to say in the months to come who might show up.

Courtney: You just released the new Quest cards, are you looking to add new cards like that to help revamp old decks and make the game feel fun and new to those of us who have been playing for a while?

Jason: That’s always our goal. With each new set we want to introduce new cards, new mechanics that mix up the meta, and leads to new types of decks that you may not have seen before. One example with the new Knights of the Frozen Throne set, is a card called Prince Keleseth, it’s a 2 mana card for 2/2. But it has an interesting battlecry: if you have no cards in your deck that cost 2 mana, then all your minion cards are buffed by +1/+1. SO it’s an example of a build around card type.

Courtney:  THAT SOUNDS GREAT! I WANT THAT CARD!

The card that Courtney needs to get before her brother.

Jason: Yeah we’ve excited for it. So you look at it like, “Huh can I make a deck that doesn’t require any 2 mana cost cards? What if I try this? Or I try this combinations of cards?” The benefit can be pretty powerful to get +1 for everybody. The design team is always thinking of different build around ideas like that that push the meta and deck creation in new ways that haven’t been done before.

Courtney: You guys also came up with the potion creation cards, and I love those.

Jason: There’s another example that we’re going  to be introducing into the new set, the first time we’re introducing a new type of card called the Hero Card. You’ve been playing for a while so you know about Ragnaros, and Jaraxxus, which can replace your hero –

Courtney : A great death saving card!

Jason: Exactly. So this time, we;re going to introduce them for all classes. SO you can play Deathstalker Rexxar, and as soon as you play him from your hand he’ll fly up onto the board and corrupt and replace the  base Rexxar, and he’s an unholy , death knight version of rexxar. He’ll give you 5 additional armor, he’ll do 2 damage to all your opponents minions when he comes into play,  but his real power to play with him, which is like the potion thing you were talking about, his hero power replaces the bow which does 2 damage to the enemy hero, and instead becomes something called “build a beast”. So what it will do, is you choose it, and it will present it with 3 different beasts from the game, you select one, and it brings up the next set of cards (another 3 beasts) and it will stitch those two beasts into an uber beast, sort of Frankenstein style, sort of like with the potions only now you’re making a beast that can go on the board and fight on your behalf.

Courtney: Which is so cool because that’s something I remember seeing when  I played the Lich King expansion in World of Warcraft when it came out, all the corrupted constructs wandering around.

Jason: So you’ll get that with playing the heroes in the new set. There will be a ton of references, so in addition to the cards we have the missions we talked about. So the bosses will be Professor Putricide that people fought in IceCrown Citadel in the raid, Blood Queen Lana’thel which is a well known boss, they’ll all make their appearances in Hearthstone with similar types of mechanics and ideas translated into Hearthstone as well.

Courtney: I’m way excited for this now as well.

Jason: We’re really excited for it as well.

Courtney: One last thing I wanted to confirm. You said all the side adventures are free, so we don’t even have to pay in game gold this time?

Jason: Not even gold. You will have all the missions unlocked. But sort of like in the past on launch day you’ll have access to the prologue and then you have access to the first wing with a pack prize. Then the next week you’ll have access to another wing, then the final wing with the Lich King waiting at the end.

Courtney: I’m really excited for this new set now. I think I’m going to really start getting into the game again, since I took a break from it.

Jason: I think you’re going to love it. We’re also making some changes with Fireside Gatherings that we’re really excited about. We have this idea that the best way to experience Hearthstone is to play in person with other people who also love Hearthstone and play around a kitchen table or cafe bar, and play collectively as a group. We launched the program about 3 years about when Hearthstone itself came out, and it’s been growing dramatically since then have had about 10 thousand Fireside Gatherings across the world. But we’re about to do something within the game itself where it can detect if you’re playing within a Fireside Gathering, you’ll basically register that you’re playing in a real location, and it will recognise that you’re playing with your friends and you can customise your own tavern and name it, and it unlocks a new game mode called a fireside brawl that you can only access if you’re at a Fireside Gathering.

What do you guys think about the changes coming in the newest expansion? What are you most excited for? Let us know in the comments below!

Three months after the release of Nights of Karazhan, Blizzard announced the newest expansion for Hearthstone today at BlizzCon 2016. The Mean Streets of Gadgetzan, has a fun, 1930’s gangster feel, and plenty of shady characters to help your hero mete out some damage.

Meant to give you a gritty, big city feel, Gadgetzan is run by 3 different crime factions, each supported by 3 hero classes. The Grimy Goons: arms dealers with their classic mobster pinstripes  supported by the hunter, paladin, and warrior. The Kabal, fringe casters who have been corrupted with dark mana, more reminiscent of classic villainous casters, are in the potion trade, and are backed by mage, priest and warlock heroes. Last, but not least, we have the Jade Lotus faction, heavily inspired by Pandaria, filled with assassins hungry for gold and jade, with the rogue, shaman, and druid heroes filling their ranks.

The developers also revealed some exciting new card features. If you want to wait until the expansion is released at the beginning of December, stop here! But do keep an eye out for teasers leading up to the release in the next couple weeks.

SPOILERS

msg-2

There are two big changes in card types coming with this expansion.

The first are tri-class cards. Each faction is associated with 3 different hero classes, and with that come a tri-class card that allows you to choose a card from one of the 3 classes associated with your faction. For instance, if you are playing a mage, you would be able to choose a mage, priest, or warlock card to put into your hand. Every faction’s card has a different mana cost and minion associated with it, but seem balanced across the board.

The second exciting reveal comes with the Kabal Leader card, Kazukus, which allows you to create your own spell. First you discover the cost of the new spell, either 1, 5, or 10 mana, then choose two powers, like deal 6 damage to all minions, and summon 3 minions that died this game. This card promises to be a lot of fun and offer a lot of choices for players within the game!

Even though I haven’t spent any money on Hearthstone, preferring to acquire expansions with in-game gold, The Mean Streets of Gadgetzan has me rearranging my budget for a pre-order.

How many of you are going to pre-order? What new cards are you excited for? Let us know in the comments below!

Blizzard’s mobile money-printing machine, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft has been available for iPad users for over a year at this point (and Android tablets since December). Today, after a long wait and a few delays, Blizzard finally added the iPhone and Android phones to its list of supported devices.

I’ve been skeptical of Blizzard’s plans to shrink the title and its glorious artwork down for smartphones, but the free-to-play collectable card game’s new iteration features a complete redesign that looks just as intuitive as its tablet and desktop counterparts. Current players, of course, need not worry about lost progress, as simply logging in to your Battle.net account will sync each and every card, record, and piece of gold into the iPhone version as well.

To further entice players to download the game on another device, Blizzard notes that playing through an entire match on the mobile edition will earn gamers a free classic card pack. I don’t know about you, but I’m sold.

I’ve put more hours into Hearthstone than I have into any other iOS title that I’ve played, and I have to say that the fact that an iPhone version now exists terrifies me. Hearthstone remains one of the most addicting games that I’ve experienced, and it’s hard to imagine having it on the device that’s always with me. If you haven’t yet experienced its power, be warned: the free-to-play moniker is misleading, as Hearthstone may cost you more of your time than you ever thought possible.

In any case, take a look at the Hearthstone mobile trailer below, and let us know if you plan to try it out!

https://youtu.be/bwO80QZU00A

Briefly: I’ve been dabbling in Blizzard’s Hearthstone for nearly a year now, and while my addiction to the game seems to come in waves (unlike my addiction for Nintendo’s damn Amiibo figures), my love for the game never wavers.

The game is insanely well designed and balanced, and definitely at home on a tablet’s screen (in fact, probably better than on a PC). It even features cross-platform multiplayer, so you’re really not missing anything by playing it on a tablet. The game is totally free to play (and not pay to win), but it can be really, really hard not to hasten your progress by paying for some new packs (which can be as addicting as hell to open).

The game is now available for Android tablets, so you non-computering, non-Apple folk can finally wet your whistles. All you need is an Android tablet with a 6 inch screen or larger, 1Gb of RAM, and Android 4.0 or later.

Already playing? Let us know what you think of the game below, and if not, you can grab it from the Amazon Appstore for Android and Google Play.

After building anticipation since last year’s BlizzCon,  Blizzard announced the release date for the newest World of Warcraft expansion, Warlords of Draenor, at a special event last Thursday.

warlords-of-draenor-1920x1200

The expansion, which takes place 35 years prior to the current game, will drop of November 13th–just a week after this year’s BlizzCon–and is currently available for pre-order here. Player’s can purchase the digital edition for $49.99 or the deluxe edition for $69.99.

While both editions include the level 90 character boost, the deluxe edition not only includes two pets (dread raven and dread hatching), but also continues Blizzard’s trend of combining multiple products in one shiny package with a Diablo III pennant and Starcraft II portraits.

2627240-collectors

Blizzard also announced the Collectors Edition (there’s been no official price point announced, but Amazon and Gamstop show it at $90). The collectors edition includes everything in the digitial deluxe edition, as well as:

Physical DVD of the expansion
Behind-the-scene DVD and Blu-ray set
Soundtrack on CD
The Art of the Warlords of Draenor, a 160-pages of concept art, finished images, and CG images
A Blackhand mouse pad

Blizzard also released the almost-five-minute long cinematic, which you can watch below.

What do you think, readers? Can’t wait? Done with Blizzard? Waiting to see? Let us know in the comments!

Briefly: I’ve been (casually) playing Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft since the free-to-play title soft-launched on the Canadian App Store a couple of weeks back, but I’m happy to say that the game is now, finally available for iPad worldwide.

The game is very well designed, and definitely at home on the iPad’s screen. It even features cross-platform multiplayer, so you’re really not missing anything by playing it on your tablet (I’d argue that it feels even better, actually). I’ve been having a blast with it, and it’s definitely a title that I’d recommend checking out (especially since, again, you can play for free).

You can download Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft for your iPad right here.

It was just a couple of days ago on the official forums for Hearthstone that a community manager brought word that the beta would soon be ending for their new free-to-play collectible card game. Who knew it would be this soon? Hearthstone is officially shakes off that beta tag and with its debut, brings along a new patch with plenty of new goodies for all.

In this new patch (1.0.0.4944), the usual bug fixes are applied that alleviated cards floating off the screen or the occasional dancing cards whenever you attacked. Also in this patch, players can now connect to other regions to challenge people worldwide. Just remember that account progress as well as card collections are saved separately per region. World of Warcraft players can now receive a new mount called the Hearthsteed just for winning three matches in either Play or Arena mode. Look at the video below to see how majestic this mount is. You know you want it.

)

Certain cards have more effects and pizazz when played which makes those cards much more special. Nothing like having a Ragnaros spew forth from the flames of hell onto the field. Not to be outdone, the heroes that you play as get the golden treatment. Once you hit 500 wins with a hero, the portrait with turn gold and animate just like golden version of cards do already. The catch is that those 500 wins has to come by way of Ranked matches. No stomping on the A.I. to get these I’m afraid. You’ll have to earn it the hard way, as you should.

To read more in depth about everything that has changed or been added to Hearthstone, head on over to the blog post on the official site.

Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft–the newest addition to the Blizzard Warcraft gaming family–is a fast-paced online strategy card game that has been getting a lot of buzz over the past few months for its engaging  (some might say addictive) yet easy-to-learn gameplay.

While the closed Beta has been ongoing for some time, Blizzard just announced this week that Hearthstone is now in open Beta.

Released in the US two days ago, the open Beta was just opened in Europe today.

The open Beta will allow anyone with a Battle.net account (and you can register for one here) to download the beta to their PC or Mac computers. Blizzard did announce at Blizzcon that Hearthstone will eventually be available on Android and i-devices, but that functioanlity is not expected until the second half of 2014.

The game is set in the Warcraft world, much to the delight of fans, but even people unfamilair with Warcraft–and/or strategy card games–should still find the game engrossing and entertaining.

Although the beta–and the game itself–will be free-to-play, it will include an in-game store that will allow players to purchase cards and decks as micro-transactions. Prices set during the Beta may change once the game goes live–however, any items purchased during the Beta will transfer with your account once the game has its official launch.

“Players choose one of nine epic Warcraft heroes to play as, and then take turns playing cards from their customizable decks to cast potent spells, use heroic weapons or abilities, or summon powerful characters to crush their opponent.” –Blizzard Entertainment

The beta is also fully integrated into the Battle.net account, so a player’s  real ID and Battle tag friends will be avaialble for to play or just chat to.

You can download Hearthstone here–but be warned, side effects are missing time and a disinclination to log off and be productive.

Have you played Hearthstone? What do you think? Loved it? Hated it? Tell us why in the comments!

Hearthstone, Blizzard Entertainment’s foray into online trading card game play, announced this weekend that they hope to have open beta for PCs and Macs by next month.

Hearthstone takes place in the Warcraft universe and will be free to play on PC, Mac, iPads, iPhone and Android platforms (mobile devices will have a later release date). For more information and to sign up for more information on the open beta, visit the Hearthstone website.

Blizzard Entertainment’s newest offering, Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft is a strategy card game played on a PC or Mac (and eventually an iPad, iPhone and Android) based in the Warcraft universe. The game features fast (10 to 15 minutes) matches of skill and luck and its beta has been the hot ticket to have for the past few months.

Players can play as a Druid, Hunter, Mage, Paladin, Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock, and Warrior (each class is its own deck), and Hearthstone allows players to play against the computer (helpful when learning the rules of the game) and against other players in a three different modes:

Play Mode: duel other players to level up heroes and complete quests. Matches are made through Battle.net and Blizzard swears they will make sure opponents are matched in skill and decks.

The Arena: A skills test mode centered more along deck-building knowledge. Players assemble a new deck from random cards and meet other participants for loot and rewards.

Practice Mode: Learn to play and test out new deck against an AI opponent.

Mage vs Warrior
A mage versus a warrior deck in Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone.

Heathstone has questing for gold rewards, which allows players to buy more card packs or enter the Arena; cards can be disenchanted for materials to build other cards needed to complete a deck. Also, players will be able to contact people on their friend’s list to compare decks or play a friendly duel.

Hearthstone is designed for all levels of experience and developers promise that the game will teach players everything they need to know as they play.

Hearthstone is free-to-play, though upgrades to card decks cost in-game gold which can be purchased via Battle.net. Blizzard is hoping to release it this year (Christmas, anyone?) for PC and Macs, with a iPad, iPhone and Android app available in the future (with cross-platform compatibility).
