We don’t talk much sports on Geekscape, but ESPN’s multipart Michael Jordan documentary ‘The Last Dance’ is a major event. And with the Coronavirus Pandemic shutting down sports, who knows when I’ll get a chance to geek out on the NBA again. Luckily, Zach Harper is a basketball writer for The Athletic and a personality on SiriusXM’s NBA channel and is here on Geekscape to talk about the NBA shutdown, how esports is continuing to take over in the wake of the pandemic and when we might see basketball again! Along the way, we discuss the best basketball documentaries, the best basketball videogames (is it NBA Jam?) and what NBA players are total geeks themselves! Former Geekscape guest Erin Darling Torralva also drops in to talk about her new online comedy course and how she and Zach are navigating the quarantine together! Enjoy!

With the Overwatch League All Star weekend coming to a close, it’s time for the real off-season to start. What a way to start it then… by going on a fire sale. That is exactly what the Shanghai Dragons did.

First, let’s start off with the players that were not let go. The Overwatch League’s only female player, Geguri maintains a spot on the roster. Her first game on the Overwatch League stage was her April 4th loss against the Dallas Fuel. She chose D.Va 86.6% of the season followed by Zarya who she was known for playing at a mere 5.8%. Toxic and I were very excited to see the gender barrier broken so quickly in this sport and will continue to support her moving forward. I still need to get my hands on a Geguri jersey!

Diya is another player that lives another day on the Dragons roster and was the biggest name on the team before Geguri arrived. Known for his Tracer and Widow play, Diya posted a 6.76 final blows and 12.85 eliminations per 10 minutes. Those numbers aren’t so good when you compare them across the league. Rank 44 and 85 respectfully. Don’t let those numbers hurt your outlook on Diya. He will be an asset to this now rebuilding team.

The last player to keep their job is Fearless. He came on board with the signing of Geguri and Ado. Mainly playing Winston throughout the season (75.3% pick rate), Fearless was one of the few flashes in the pan for Shanghai. I am excited to see how he will perform with the new team!

Now onto the players/coaches Shanghai dropped. At the time of this article, Shanghai dropped ten personnel on 9/2/18. Altering,Freefeel,Fiveking,Roshan,Xushu,Ado,Sky,Daemin along with Kong and Nai8 on their coaching staff. When I seen this news I had mixed emotions. For one, the Shanghai Dragons season was dreadful. They needed a change and I am sure people were expecting it. What I wasn’t expecting was the Dragons to cut Ado.

Let’s start with Ado. He played mainly Tracer and Genji (39.2% & 37.9% pick rate). I understand that the meta has shifted away from dive slightly but Ado showed a lot of promise. He posted 6.92 final blows and 13.25 eliminations per 10 minutes. That is statistically better than where Diya was at. I am thinking the shifting meta is the reason the Dragons cut him. I would be surprised if one of the new teams passes him up.

Altering was Shanghai’s main healer. He predominantly played Mercy in season one picking her 74.5% of the time. Of all healers in the Overwatch League, he was number one in healing with 11,574.02 healing per 10 minutes.

Freefeel was Altering and Fiveking’s counter part playing off-heals. Mainly choosing Zenyatta (88.3% pick rate), he had 7141.17 healing per 10 minutes, ranking in at 30. Freefeel saw the most playing time of the support players on the Dragons.

Fiveking was a back-up main healer that was subbed in for Altering from time to time maining Mercy and Lucio (55.9% and 41.9% pick rate).
Sky was a Zenyatta player that never really seen much playing time for the Dragons. He is the only player on the Shanghai roster that will be competing in the World Cup. He will be representing China. Good luck Sky!

Roshan mainly played Winston for the Dragons this season (77.2% pick rate). Roshan was seeing the spotlight every game until Fearless and Geguri showed up. This release does not surprise me.

Roshan’s wingman, Xushu who was a D.Va main (76.7% pick rate) also got the cut. Xushu’s playing time was cut with the the entrance of Geguri.

The last of the players that were cut is Daemin. Daemin was brought in to fill Diya’s roster mid-season when Diya had to tend to “Family Issues” back home in China. He mainly played Tracer and Junkrat (29% and 26.7% pick rate) during his short stint with the team putting up some pretty lackluster numbers. Final blows 5.69 and eliminations 11.66 per 10 minutes.

This firesale that the Dragons hosted was something well needed. They retained the talent that produced. Shanghai has a lot of work ahead of them and the good news for them is that they aren’t the only team making cuts. As of 9/2/18, 5 other teams made roster cuts including Janus of NYXL and Mistakes of the Boston Uprising. There is talent out there in free agency and Shanghai has the space to make some good moves!

More talk about these roster moves will be coming to you in this week’s edition of The Over League Podcast!

May 10th was the big day. The day where Overwatch League finals tickets went on sale. As I sat at desk waiting for the tickets to open up, I was thinking who I was going to end up seeing. Like most, I was thinking NYXL are going to have a hometown advantage. Maybe I was going to have a good look at the newly improved LA Valiant. Whoever made it, I didn’t really care. I just wanted to see some more Overwatch live. In March, I flew down to Arizona to visit my parents, sister and my adorable niece. The day after I flew out, we drove to beautiful Burbank California to catch and Overwatch League game. It was amazing despite seeing my hometown Fusion take a 3-1 loss to the NYXL. This incredible experience was running through my mind as I got through right as the tickets went on sale and snatched up a pair.

Since then, I have been enjoying Overwatch League as usual through Twitch streams. Philly put up a showing like no other and defeated Boston then stunned the NYXL 2-0. Not only was I going to Overwatch League finals but I get to see my boys too!! London vs Philly and I was riding high on the Fusion taking home the big prize!

Like any other summer, this one is just flying by and July 27th snuck up me. I ended up getting my hotel the Monday before the event. Once that was booked, my body was 100% ready. Friday started by watching some Contenders matches of course then off to the train station. My girlfriend and I got tickets for our NJ Transit NYC bound train and that’s when the real hype started.

After about an hour and a half of travel, our train pulled into the bustling Penn Station in Manhattan New York. Everytime I make it to NYC, it blows me away at the amount of people in a single area. We check into our hotel room, I change into my Fusion jersey and put on my Fusion hat and we ran back to Penn Station to catch the 2 subway to Barclays Center.

I have never been to the Barclays Center before so I was not aware that at the top of the escalator leaving the subway station would lead to an Overwatch heaven. An hour before the doors opened, the place was mobbed. People sporting Fusion and Spitfire jerseys and tons of people with their NYXL and other teams jersey were all over as well. I was happy to see a lot of people with their Geguri jerseys. There was also some great cosplay too. Unfortunately I did not get any photos of the cosplayers but the one that stood out the most was this girl’s Brigette Outlaws cosplay.

When we arrived, it was about 4:00 pm . The doors opened at 5 but boy did that feel like an eternity to get that one hour in. Once the doors opened up we were greeted with metal detectors then finally the concourse. Laid out was miscellaneous merchandise like jerseys, plushies, Funko Pops and some finals specific t-shirts. There was tables to pick up your thundersticks, a wall where you can write your name and some Overwatch League face painting. We pick up some thundersticks then off to find ourselves some good seats. We walk into the arena and BOOM! You are greeted with this big beautiful screen. It doesn’t wrap around like the screen in the Blizzard Arena but it was a sight to see.

The 20,000 seats that were sold quickly filled up and we were presented with a live hour of Watch Point with Monty, Doa and Malik. It was interesting as always. They broke down the playoffs and each team’s road to the finals. After Watch Point, the place started going nuts. A live DJ was there performing, the Brooklynettes which are the dance team for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and Jeff Kaplin. The place went wild as he thanked the fans for making Overwatch League finals a surreal moment for him and the Overwatch team.

After all of the extreme Jeff Kapin hype died, game 1 started. Each game was super intense. (Stay tuned to the next episode of The Over League to hear the review of the games) Each kill no matter what side it was on, produced a thunderous roar from the crowd. From pick number one, you were drawn in.

The first night ended with London taking the first set 3-1. The Fusion fans were silent in the arena (along with myself) but we still had hope. We hopped on the subway, grabbed some Five Guys and headed back to our hotel for the night.

Rise and shine Maridon! Woke up at 7AM on a Saturday FML. We left our hotel around 11AM. We decided to pay a visit to the 9/11 memorial and Freedom Tower. I feel odd saying that the memorial was beautiful because of the events of 9/11 but it surely was. The Freedom Tower was ridiculously huge too.

After that we grabbed some lunch, shot back to the hotel and got ready for day 2 of the finals.

Day 2’s stadium filled up super fast. We decided not to get there an hour early and we were lucky to get the seats that we did. Again, the festivities started with Watchpoint then it took an odd turn. They invited DJ Khalid to perform. I like DJ Khalid but not for his music, for the memes that are produced by his over the top personality he markets himself with. It was kind of cringy but I was able to send some goofy Snapchats out of the situation so I made the best of it. As time drew closer to game time, I started feeling more tense. The Fusion looked terrible on day 1 and I was nervous they would drop the ball since that performance was so poor. It really hurts when you see your team get stomped. The countdown to the match started and the stadium exploded with excitement.

Philly was outplayed again. (I will be discussing why in our next podcast episode) London swept the day and took home the hardware. The feeling of disappointment and excitement was an odd feeling. The games were super intense and the crowd really got you into the event.

Profit won the MVP trophy and it was well deserved. He put London on his back and ran through the Fusion. One thing that really bothered me and to some this will be very minor but the championship trophy ceremony. Nate Nanzer was on stage with the owner of the Spitfire and presented the trophy to him. He thanked everyone as expected then before the players even touched the trophy, they cut away. I understand that owners put out money to create the teams we know and love but that trophy should go to the players first. They are the individuals that battled in the trenches to win the trophy along with the million dollar prize.

That pretty much rounds out the trip. We hit the subway to go back to our hotel and hung out there until the next morning. It was pretty exhausting with all the walking and my girlfriend and I met our people quota 5 minutes into getting into NYC on Friday. I will be going back next year if they decided to host the finals in NYC. I would strongly recommend going to this event if you are a fan of Overwatch League or just a fan of Overwatch in general.

Since we are going to a bi-weekly cast, Toxic and I figured we would get a little mini cast out there to catch up on everything before the start of stage 4! This is a nice short and sweet episode that goes over the games of the week, Maridon’s power rankings, picks and a little Overthoughts to top it all off!

The BlizzCon 2016 Opening Ceremonies had so much information on Overwatch that it was hard to believe it only took up 20 minutes of time! As the festivities begun, between the reveal of new maps, modes and characters, Blizzard announced what might be the most game changing reveal of all; the Overwatch League.

Looking to combine traditional sports with eSports, the Overwatch League looks like you would expect something you would expect from the NFL, NBA or MLB. By allowing pros to prove their worth at a nearby combine, their play will be evaluated for the chance to join a legitimate sports team. If a potential owner likes what they see, they can sign you to a contract, complete with a salary for your services. The plan is to give major cities around the world their own teams, making this incredibly ambitious plan looks like it could be one major step forward in legitimizing eSports in a way that will make digital competition surge to levels that can compete with physical sports. I bet your parents feel pretty foolish for telling you to go outside now, don’t they?

There’s no word on if this is going to be a PC exclusive opportunity, but chances are console players are going to be left in the dust. Still, we all have plenty of time to brush up on our payload escorting skills ahead of the league’s launch, which is expected to be in 2017. What are you hoping to see out of the Overwatch League? Think you have what it takes to be the next superstar of gaming? Let us know what you want to see from the league in the comments below!
