Welcome back to Let’s Play Arcade!

The outline of this show is simple. We’ve got:

Two best friends.
One randomly selected Apple Arcade game.
Two fresh new semi-randomly selected beers (we basically just grab something new that we see on the shelf).

We don’t talk about the game at all before we record, so we’ll be learning each other’s thoughts and impressions live on air. At the end of each episode, we’ll also randomly draw the game for our next offering, so you’ll always know what’s coming up on the next adventure.

Part of the appeal of doing this show was just getting to “hang out” more often. Back in the day we’d be able to meet up for a beer, but because of where we live at this point, it just can’t really happen. For each episode of Let’s Play Arcade!, we’ll also be cracking open (and sort-of reviewing) a random beer as well. Neither of us really know anything about beer (or drink it all that often), so while we don’t know what anyone has to gain from us talking about them, we’ll see what happens!

Each episode will also feature an ‘after show’, where we’ll basically drivel on about whatever we feel like (stick around after the end theme if you want to listen).

This episode we jump into Lego: Builder’s Journey, a beautifully crafted puzzler with a touching, silent story. We also chat a lot about Coronavirus / COVID-19 — keep in mind that this was recorded about a month ago and John has since cancelled his plans for a road trip through the United States (and also the border is closed anyways).

Now available only on Apple Arcade! LEGO Builder’s Journey is a poetic puzzle that takes place in a LEGO brick world, brought to life with the most accurately rendered LEGO elements yet to feature on screens. Be taken through a breathtaking world filled with brick-by-brick effects, accompanied by a beautiful soundtrack.

Swing bats and throw balls through the intertwined histories of humankind and cricket in this one button, physics-driven game.

Over a thousand years ago the human race teetered on the edge of extinction. Our ancestors were helpless against the mighty behemoths of the land. And then, salvation…the game of cricket was invented! Go alone, or take a friend, on a journey through the rich and exquisitely accurate history of cricket in Cricket Through the Ages.

This episode, after John finally found a game that he loved (and actually considered a game) with last week’s The Pinball Wizard… we then drew a game about reading and you can probably guess how things go.

Dear Reader lets you curl up and play your favorite books, turning classic literature into clever word puzzles. Unscramble passages from famous books, unlock unique puzzles, and add new books to your library.

Dear Reader includes fifty literary classics and dozens of different word puzzles, from unscrambling anagrams to swapping lines of text. As far as we know, this is the first game where you can dive in and play with the actual written words from so many tempting books.

Ascend the castle tower. Level up your skills. Fulfill your destiny. Become the wizard you were born to be!

The Pinball Wizard is an arcade adventure game where the main character is propelled into action by a set of flippers, like the ball in a pinball machine. Each level of the game is a contained area inside a tower. The goal of the game is to survive and get to the top of the tower.

Nintendo dropped an unexpected bombshell this morning.

No, not the NX (although 9-13 is fastly approaching.) No, what Nintendo announced today wasn’t a new 3DS, or Wii U, or even NX related, but instead, a partnership with Apple. YES! That Apple. Today, during this mornings Apple event, Shigeru Miyamoto and Bill Trinen took to the stage to announce Super Mario Run for IOS. The game uses the New Super Mario Bros. art style, but is not what you think it is.

b6ql99rhn5sdqnxnwgoe

Super Mario Run is not an endless runner, but instead an auto runner with a set number of levels, like a normal Mario game would. The game will be free, but will also include additional things to download for a set fee (perhaps extra levels.) The game will also include other modes such as being able to race against other friends and more! While the game will be coming to Android later on, IOS will be getting the game first starting in December.

That wasn’t the only Nintendo related thing though. They also announced that starting later this year that Pokemon GO will be making it’s way to the Apple Watch. Not much will different from the normal version, but hey!, now you have Pokemon right on your wrist!

One more small point. Nintendo also announced that a set of Super Mario stickers will be coming to iMessage sometime soon as well. You can find out more about Super Mario Run by checking out it’s website right here.

What do you think about these new announcements? Are you excited for Nintendo’s partnership? Sound off in the comments below!

The Pokémon company has just released an app designed to add Pokémon-related retouches and filters on your selfies!  It can currently be downloaded on the iTunes Store, and will later be available on Android devices.  When you design your selfie, you’ll also be able to use a quick shortcut to share it to your social media channels such as Twitter and Facebook, with the tag #Pokemon20 automatically added.

I’ve already created my own selfie, although I’m hoping that with time, they’ll add more filters and options–the only two available adds an in-game themed caption, or adds a Pokeball filter to your photo (with or without a caption).

Don’t forget that a Pokémon themed Nintendo Direct is on Friday, as well as an early access Pokken Tournament competition and Pokémon Boutique this Saturday!  Pokémon month continues the hype train!

Nintendo recently announced a plethora of big news, including details regarding the new My Nintendo account system, as well as their first mobile app Miitomo.  Along with all the breaking news, the company also announced that they will be launching five smart device application by the end of March 2017 (including Miitomo).  This is an absolutely huge move by Nintendo, and it’s always fun to speculate what may be coming next!  So let’s go down the rabbit hole and take a brief look at their history with smart devices, and I’ll try at some guesses as to what we may see next!

I first heard of Nintendo creating an app for smart devices during a Nintendo Direct presentation detailing Wii U functionality in 2012.  During a segment, Iwata goes into details for “Miiverse”, and a part of those details stated, “The social elements of Miiverse are also designed for Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and future Nintendo devices.”  There was lots of speculation that this was going to be a smartphone app, and after some time, it was launched.  However, contrary to what many had thought, Nintendo had chosen to make it exclusively a web app instead.

miiversegeekscape

Nintendo continued the web-based application route, with recently releasing another app for Super Mario Maker.  Titled “Super Mario Maker Bookmark“, this app allows you to queue a list of courses you would like to play when you’re on the go, so when you return to your Wii U at home, all of the search-work has already been completed.  It also allows you to add identifier tags to describe your levels, such as “Gimmick,” “Puzzle,” etc.

mariomakerphone

When talking about brand new Nintendo gimmicks, there’s no name more popular than “Pokemon!”  There are many times where Pokemon seems to be used as an experimental Intellectual Property for new ideas.  An older example would be the N64 game “Hey You! Pikachu!” where the player can use a microphone to be able to command a virtual Pikachu on screen, and a newer example would be Nintendo’s first Amiibo, which were Pokemon NFC figurines for the Wii U eShop title, “Pokemon Rumble U!”  I feel like Pokémon is always chosen because The Pokemon Company has a lot of wiggle room to work with the IP independently of Nintendo, but that’s still only conjecture on my part.

Many have heard of the Pokemon GO application being released this year, but it may be interesting to note that this isn’t the first Pokemon-based application to hit mobile devices.  True to their pattern, Pokemon was again used in an experimental way.  The very first Pokemon app (that I recall) making it to mobile devices was a virtual encyclopedia (otherwise known as a Pokedex) titled “Pokedex”.  Originally, it only existed as an app on the Nintendo 3DS, but then became available through your smartphone or tablet!  When this first came out, I was totally flabbergasted–I never imagined that The Pokemon Company was allowed to release any software that wasn’t on a Nintendo handheld!  Several other apps were launched as well–an app for viewing “Pokemon TV”, a “Camp Pokemon” game, and a mobile port of the 3DS title “Pokemon Shuffle.”

pokedex_app1

This details Nintendo’s short history of utilizing smart devices, however, there is one more question we must ask ourselves before we start speculating:  “Why mobile?”  If Nintendo has been adamant about anything, it’s had always been about creating software that can take full advantage of the hardware that it’s utilizing.  A similar question to ask would be “Why is Miiverse and Super Mario Maker Bookmark simply web apps, while Pokemon Shuffle and others are installable apps?”  First let’s have a look at the cool features that most smartphones have in common, and try to answer these questions:

-Front and rear facing cameras–useful taking photos and AR (Augmented Reality) purposes
-Gyroscope–useful for detecting snappy tilt movements
-Local Hard Drive–useful for holding large amounts of information
-Microphone–useful for voice commands

It wouldn’t have made sense to have had Miiverse or Super Mario Maker Bookmark as local apps simply because large amounts of storage would be required to view all of the data stored on their website, especially since they’re being updated in real time.  Pokedex is a limited encyclopedia so even though it is very large, it still has a maximum limit–totally suitable for a mobile app.  Pokemon Shuffle is a game in and of itself, so it wouldn’t make sense as a web app because you wouldn’t be able to play it while offline.  However, web apps do have an advantage–web apps can usually be accessed not only by smartphones, but by PCs and others as well.  Therefore, Miiverse and Super Mario Maker Bookmark were available to many devices, and not strictly limited to smartphones.

Using all of the above as a backbone, here is a (somewhat) organized list on my thoughts of we will see with upcoming Nintendo apps!

-Miitomo is included in the count, so that technically makes FOUR more apps that Nintendo will build.  Miitomo is also stated as their “first app for mobile devices,” so they’re NOT including Pokemon apps in the count.

-True to the point above, Pokemon GO will not be one of the apps being counted.  It will probably be launched under The Pokemon Company’s name and not Nintendo’s.

-While a Miiverse app seems unlikely, as it really wouldn’t make sense, a “Nintendo Hub” app of sorts that can keep a local copy of all of your friends’ posts, and perhaps even a local database of your friends’ Super Mario Maker levels could be useful.  It would also be cool to be able to draw Miiverse posts with your phone’s screen, something that is not currently possible with the web app.  This “Hub” app will keep together all of the major Nintendo services, extensions, and game offerings, perhaps similar to the Final Fantasy Portal app by Square Enix.

-Miitomo isn’t a game so much as it is a “social interacting tool” with game elements.  I do not expect Nintendo to release full dedicated games–at most, possibly ports of games, such as Pokemon Shuffle.  Out of the four games, I’m guessing at least one will be a port.

-A dedicated companion to Super Mario Maker.  A long time ago, Nintendo created a game called “Warioware D.I.Y.” which allowed players to create Warioware microgames and share with others.  However, this game had a unique feature–players could download an app specific to the Wii just to play the created games, although owners of the app couldn’t create games themselves.  What if you could simply play Super Mario Maker levels on your smartphone–download a bunch and play them on the go, even if you couldn’t make any?  It would be an interesting way for them to advertise Super Mario Maker.

-If Nintendo can master how to work emulation for smartphones, then it’s may be possible to link Virtual Console purchase to a smart device–the emulator could be an app all by itself, or it could be embedded in a different app (like a Nintendo Hub!).

-An Augmented Reality app or game that allows the use of Nintendo Characters in real life scenarios–Nintendo has already tested the AR waters with apps on the 3DS such as AR Games and Photos with Mario!

-Amiibo Catalog–I think it would just be common sense for Nintendo to create an app for users to keep track of their amiibo collection.  Although their website has an extensive database, it would be effective to link Amiibo purchases to your account, and be able to link it to all devices.  This catalog can also be used to gauge interest in previously released figures, so Nintendo can do some guesswork as to how many people are interested in a figure that’s no longer available, perhaps even to manage their restocks.  Even beyond smart devices, this could also simply software with “read-only” amiibo functionality–to a point.  I just couldn’t help but feel exhausted after re-scanning all of my amiibo in Mario Maker to get all of the costumes.

Whichever apps come out, I have no doubt that at least one or two of them will be nothing less than revolutionary!  Do you have your own theories as well?  Please let us know in the comments!

Miitomo

Briefly: Apple announced a new, App-focussed Apple TV earlier today, and while every Apple event always garners an unsurmountable level of hate (wake up sheeple), I’m damned excited for the thing.

First, it looks like an inexpensive and phenomenal way to get content to your TV. I’m not a cable subscriber, and as an everyday user (and fan) of the 3rd-generation Apple TV, it has been far and away the best device for getting content to my television, be it Netflix, iTunes rentals, photos, YouTube, or countless other services.

This new Apple TV does all that too, and by the looks of it, it does it even better.

But there’s something I’m looking forward to even more than that, and that’s apps and gaming. Sure, I own multiple consoles and handhelds, but there are no devices on the market that bring more approachable gaming to the masses than Apple’s. I had never seen anyone’s grandmother play a video game of any sort until the iPad, and that’s a trend that I think will continue with this new Apple TV.

No, Apple didn’t make a gaming console, and no, they’re not targeting Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo. This is going to be a gaming device for people who are not gamers, and Apple and developers are going to make a killing off of it.

Oh, and it’s going to get full featured games too.

Following Apple’s ‘Hey Siri’ event this morning, Activision revealed that Guitar Hero, Skylanders, and Geometry Wars are headed to the new Apple TV.

Skylanders: Superchargers is a full port of the console game, and “The Skylanders SuperChargers Starter Pack for Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch will include everything fans with those devices need to play, including a Bluetooth-enabled portal, an embedded Bluetooth controller, and even a built-in stand. What’s more, if you have multiple Apple devices, your progress can be seamlessly synced across Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch with cloud save support under the same Game Center account.”

GHero

That sounds freaking awesome. You can play on your TV, and then actually take the same game on the go with you, it kind of sounds like what Sony wanted to do with the Playstation Vita, except it will actually work.

Here’s what the company had to say about Guitar Hero Live:

Guitar Hero Live is also coming to a wide array of devices, including consoles, mobile devices and Apple TV. Guitar Hero Live’s GH Live mode brings you closer to the live stage experience with live-action, first-person gameplay with crowds and bands that react dynamically to how you play. There’s also GHTV, the world’s first playable music video network, which lets you play along with a continually updated collection of official music videos spanning a variety of genres. Guitar Hero Live for Apple TV, iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch devices will come with the redesigned six-button guitar controller, which connects through Bluetooth so it be used across all supported Apple devices.

“We jumped at the opportunity to bring back Guitar Hero in a cool new way with Guitar Hero Live and have been energized by the response from fans who have had a chance to play it so far,” said Jamie Jackson, co-studio head and creative director at FreeStyleGames. “We can’t wait for the game to launch next month and think people are going to get a kick out of living their rock star fantasy on consoles, mobile devices and Apple TV this fall. It’s going to be rad!”

Geometry Wars 3: Retro Evolved is also headed to the Apple TV this Fall.

Rock Band creator Harmonix has also developed an entirely new IP for the Apple TV called Beat Sports, which looks like a mixture of Wii Sports and an extremely approachable rhythm title. The title offers “a collection of music-infused mini-games based loosely on familiar sports like tennis, volleyball, and golf. Designed and developed exclusively for the new Apple TV, Beat Sports is controlled using the brand-new remote.”

It looks simple, and it looks like a blast.

Another thing that I’m excited about? App store games are generally far more affordable than their console counterparts, and with my ailing exchange rate, I need to save all the money that I can. Also, my current Apple TV turns on way, way faster than my PS4 does, so if I have just a few minutes to jump into a game, guess which controller I’m more likely to grab?

Bring on the hate.

Briefly: After five long years, Apple has finally revealed a powerful new Apple TV, and it’s going to be freaking huge.

Now, the event is still ongoing, so there’s still a ton of news coming through, but it’s pretty clear (and I’m not just saying that because I’m an Apple fan) that this is going to turn the Apple TV from a well designed hobby product, into a central hub for all of your media, be that television, movies, games, apps, comic books, and more.

In introducing the product, Apple CEO Tim Cook stated that “Our vision for TV is simple and perhaps a little provocative. We believe the future of television is apps.”

Disney

The new tvOS features a gorgeous new design (and I absolutely love that Siri support), but the biggest game-changer that the new Apple TV brings to your living room is the App Store. Yep, that same App Store that has brought hundreds of thousands of apps to millions of phones, including console quality games, incredible sports apps, and other amazing experiences, is coming to your TV.

Apple showed off some pretty cool applications, but the thing that I’m most excited for? Local multiplayer games. Many of the games showed off on stage had multiple people playing at the same time, on the same screen, which is almost unheard of these days unless you’re playing on a Wii U.

One of the best gaming experiences that I’ve had with friends as of late has been playing Jackbox Games’ Xbox One titles, a series of party games that utilize your smart phones as controllers, and have a large amount of players playing at the same time in the same room. It’s a freaking blast, and I can see a myriad of titles with similar mechanics making their way to the new Apple TV.

I own multiple consoles, and have so many games, but have never found a need to buy another controller. With the new Apple TV, all of my friends have a controller in their pocket, all of the time, and that’s the thing that I’m most excited for.

APPLETV

It’s got a brand new remote, with a gyroscope and an accelerometer for motion gaming, and I’m sure that a lot of games will use your iPhone as a controller as well.

Developers can begin working on apps starting today, and Apple showed images from console ports like Transistor and Disney Infinity, and even noted that developers will have the opportunity to have one purchase cover the app on iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

Pretty freaking cool.

The new Apple TV will cost $149 for a 32Gb model, and $199 for a 64Gb Model, and will launch in October.

Cook said that “When you consume this way, you realize just how much better it can be,” and I cannot wait to try it out for myself.

Briefly: Well this is cool. It seems like California gets all of the best Comic Conventions.

This one is put together by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and his pal Stan Lee helped him announce it:

The convention aims to “celebrates the Age of the Geek by bringing together America’s two greatest superheroes: pop culture and technology.”

Here’s the announcement message from Woz:

Hi Everyone,

I’m excited to be launching Silicon Valley Comic Con today! I’m traveling and speaking so I can’t take lots of calls, so I wanted to post this memo for you.

I’m teaming up with friends to make this happen because I want to give Silicon Valley it’s very own kind of Comic Con where everyone can have fun enjoying what they love. Today we’re lucky to have so many kinds of entertainment, from movies, TV shows, web series, music, video games, social media and more, and the lines between entertainment and the technology we love so much in Silicon Valley are getting blurrier every day. We’re going to create a place where all these different kinds of interests can come together, and we can come together too.

There are lots of fans like me in San Francisco and the Valley, and I’m excited that now we’ll have a Comic Con with our very own flavor. When I was growing up, it was hard to be a geek. It definitely wasn’t cool, and that wasn’t easy. I’m happy things have changed because now people are able to be proud of being geeks and being different. Silicon Valley Comic Con will be an event where fans of all kinds can celebrate the Age of the Geek.

I’m going to be working with lots of great people to make this happen. I hope you watch the video my friend Stan Lee and I had fun making together, and I’ll be making more along the way. I’ve also got entertainment industry veteran John Alcantar on board to help us create our very own kind of Comic Con for Silicon Valley in 2016. John will help us pull the team together, and we’ll even be looking for help from volunteers to help create an event we can all be proud of. Stay tuned for more!

I hope I’ll see you in San Jose next year March 19-20. It’s going to be amazing!

Woz

Will you be attending?

Right now as Apple is showing off the Apple Watch, the new Macbook, and pimping out HBO Now on Apple TV, a new, super intense trailer for the upcoming fifth season of Game of Thrones premiered.

Enough talk. Just watch while you can before it’s taken down (for the inevitable official upload).

Update: Watch now in much higher quality!

Briefly: It’s not an Apple TV that plays games, but it’s a pretty awesome announcement from today’s Apple Keynote.

HBO has officially revealed it’s long rumoured standalone streaming service, and it’s called HBO Now. Apple will be the official launch partner for the service, which will launch this April before the premiere of Game of Thrones new season.

The service carries a more than reasonable price too, launching at just $14.99 per month. HBO noted that if you sign up in April, your first month will be absolutely free.

“All you need to get HBO Now is a broadband connection and an Apple device,” said HBO CEO Richard Plepler. “When you subscribe to HBO NOW you will have access to all our acclaimed original programming — past, present and future — as well as our unmatched lineup of Hollywood blockbusters.”

The service has only been announced for the US, but I certainly hope a Canadian announcement follows, as the service will give full access to HBO’s library of TV and movies. Gah!

Will you be subscribing? What do you think of the price? Sound out below!

Briefly: It’s Christmas in September for Apple fans (though everyone peeked and saw their presents early due to the ever-flowing stream of leaks).

The revered tech company today announced their yearly smartphone, and it’s pretty much everything that we imagined it would be. The iPhone 5S is faster (like, a lot faster) than last year’s iPhone 5, boasting an impressive 64-bit (which really doesn’t mean a lot now, but will definitely come into play in the future) A7 chip, a much improved, gorgeous-looking camera system, a unique fingerprint-unlocking feature (that looks much better implemented than anything we’ve seen before), and much more. The unit also added a third colour option to the mix, with a fancy gold/white combination. It looks just as sleek and sexy as last year’s iPhone 5 (which is arguably still the best looking smartphone on the market), and will be available for pre-order on September 13th for a September 20th launch. Take a look at the iPhone 5S product video (in low-res for now) below.

Here’s a video detail the features of the new camera:

Instead of simply make last year’s model a cheaper option, Apple has instead put the insides into some funky, colorful new casing that should be a huge hit with the younger crowds. It’s called the iPhone 5C, and is available in a variety of different, plastic colors that are said to still feel excellent. Take a look at the 5C product video below.

Now, let’s try to avoid a flame-war. Everyone has different preferences and opinions when it comes to mobile devices, tech companies, and game consoles, and you know what, that’s totally cool.

I’m a fan, and I can’t wait to get my hands on the iPhone 5S.

Steve Jobs was, without question, one of the greatest innovative minds to bridge the millennium. But before he was creating the iPod and other fun little gadgets that we enjoy using on a daily basis, Jobs helped change the world by helping bring personal computers to homes all across the globe. Now, less than two years after the passing of the late-great technological icon, Hollywood brings his story to life in the new biopic, Jobs.

Ashton Kutcher stars as Apple founder, Steve Jobs, who goes from college dropout to billionaire. But as you’d expect, no billion-dollar journey leaves a clean trail. Jobs finds himself tangled in a morally-corrupted web of lies and betrayal. And with obstacles at every turn, the innovative thinker will stop at nothing to change the mindset of the world.

Although there are many to choose from, the biggest issue with Joshua Michael Stern’s recent work, Jobs, is the directors inability to generate a tone. You can have the greatest actors in the world and the most interesting story imaginable, but without purpose and direction, you’ll never have a great movie. Throughout all of the cliche moments and ironically uninspiring motivational-speeches, Jobs to find itself. And that isn’t to say that a historically mediocre-at-best Ashton Kutcher didn’t pour his heart and soul into this role, because it’s obvious that he did. It’s just that this overly-long and abundantly-bland feature is uncertain on all levels. The film never sets a path of course because Stern appears undecided on whether to vilify his subject matter or honor him. Ultimately, the director attempts to do both and the final result is an insincere and uneven ride.

Jobs is certainly a missed opportunity, but one that doesn’t necessarily rest on the shoulders of its predominantly B-List cast. Ashton Kutcher and Josh Gad are most notable as Jobs and his Apple co-founder, Steve Wozniak. Their friendship stands as one of the most interesting relationships examined in the film. As portrayed on screen, Steve Jobs was the vision behind Apple, while Wozniak was the hands-on computer-developer who turned those visions into reality. But outside of those commendable lead performances, Jobs makes the mistake of openly criticizes its subject and showing him as an egotistical and pompous jerk. By taking such an appropriate, it makes humanizing Jobs and rejoicing in his return to glory a difficult sell. One that filmmaker Joshua Michael Stern never quite accomplishes.

Jobs carries a bloated running time north of two hours and only a few interesting plot lines. Many of the film’s intriguing angles and stories are left dangling and never elaborated on, making this biopic a frustrating watch. As the old saying goes, “there are plenty of fish in the sea”. I’d swim somewhere else.

There looks to be a lot of iconic moments in this film, and I can’t wait to check it out.

Open Road Films has just released the first trailer for their August 16th release, Jobs. The film tells the incredible story of the inception, rise, and fall of Apple Computers before its eventual climb to be one of the world’s most profitable companies.

The film received mixed reception after its Sundance premiere, but this preview certainly makes is look like a lot of fun. Watch the preview below, and let us know if you’ll be checking it out!

We follow Steve Jobs (ASHTON KUTCHER) from the enthusiasm and self-discovery of his youth through his darkest days, brightest triumphs, and the ultimate power of his drive, his passions, and his undying will to change everything we thought possible. Dark, honest, and uncompromising, “Jobs” plunges into the depths of Steve Jobs’ character, uncovering his driving motivations, his gifts, his flaws, his failures, and his ultimate successes.

EW today released the first clip from the upcoming release of JOBS. The film is set to premiere tomorrow at Sundance, long before its wide release on April 19th.

Many balked at the picture when it was announced that Aston Kutcher would be playing the late Apple co-founder, but after seeing stills, and now this clip, Kutcher looks to portray him very capably.

JOBS is said to chronicle the defining 30 years of Steve Jobs’ life. What do you think?

I sit down with actor, writer, social media philosopher John Cabrera to talk about his new web series H+, from producer Bryan Singer. What is H+? What is post-humanism? Is it already happening? Are we becoming too dependent on our social media and digital tools? What is the cost of progress? Will Bryan Singer ever give John an X-Mans? These are just some of the many topics explored with my new friend on this episode of Geekscape!

When it comes to iOS games, it just takes one glance at the App Store to instantly see successful games sitting right next to its seemingly endless army of clones. Now, I have nothing against cloning a game. As long as you aren’t aping the game completely, the game can come off as a compliment to how great the original idea was and maybe be able to even offer something new.

Tiny Toots is a slide and fly game from Tradewest Digital. If you have played Tiny Wings, the concept is very similar. You touch the screen when going downhill to slide faster and let go when going uphill. Instead of a bird trying to outrun the night, you get a lovable dinosaur named Houston that propels itself with the help of flatulence caused by his love for eating beans.

Everything is broken up into levels that Houston has to race to the end of to escape the evil doctor trying to capture him. Eating beans gives you a higher score the more you eat and there are red beans that temporarily give you a speed boost. The red beans also fill up a meter in the bottom left corner that when pressed, launches Houston sky high leaving what I hope is a trail of dust in his wake.

Yeah I know, it all sounds silly. That’s what makes Tiny Toots charming, if you can call farting charming (it’s Geekscape… we can). Besides all that, Tiny Toots is still, at its core, fun to play. Normally, I chastise games aping popular titles for the sheer intention of riding the coat tails of the other games success. With Tiny Toots though, it straddles the fence of being different enough that I can forgive it and enjoy a farting dinosaur gliding up and down hills. Plus, Droid users still can’t download Tiny Wings for themselves, so until they can, why not fake it until they make it?

Editor’s note: Jonathan religiously plays Dillo Hills, yet another successful Tiny Wings clone. But he’s always fakin’ it anyways.
