While many critics and outlets constantly insist that audiences are starving for the Spider-Man film that they deserve, it feels too much like revisionist history. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man starring Tobey McGuire in 2002 (89% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, 73 Meta-Critic score) and Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man with Andrew Garfield in 2012 (72%, 66) both opened to strong critical approval. Yet, this rapid return to the Peter Parker character is a whole new ballgame with a completely different feel and trajectory. Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) enters the heart of its third “Phase” with a mountain of steam, but can Spider-Man: Homecoming deliver?

Set a few months after the events of Captain America:Civil War, a 15 year-old Peter Parker (Tom Holland) is operating under the watchful eye of Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and his loyal assistant Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau). But as Peter tries harder and harder to impress Stark with his superhero alter ego Spider-Man, he uncovers an underground arms creator and dealer (Michael Keaton) whose powerful weaponry bridges alien technology with human machinery. Instructed by Stark to stop his pursuit of the arms dealer, Peter disobeys the orders and finds himself face to face with a nefarious foe.

Homecoming fits seamlessly into the MCU with a familiar foundation of humor and action. Built on the shoulders of an ingratiating and clumsy teenage geek, played wonderfully by rising star Tom Holland, Marvel’s latest release places the universe’s macro storyline back on course. Insane visual effects form a web-like cohesion with witty one-line zingers to help keep the action-train churning. These over-extended sequences occur frequently and dwindle in effectiveness with each recurring appearance in the film, yet they’re easily overshadowed by some clever maneuvering with the screenplay and Tom Holland’s alluring performance. And as I usually criticize the MCU for its lack of attention to its film’s central villains, Michael Keaton’s Vulture is birthed from a truly intriguing concept. Although Homecoming fails to adequately venture down that creative path, instead delving too deep into Peter’s buffoonish teenage quandaries, there’s enough meat on the bones to entertain in exactly the way a summer blockbuster should.

Grade: 3.5/5

Briefly: This is incredible.

I’ve been largely avoiding trailers, clips, and spoilers for the upcoming release of Spider-Man homecoming, but for some reason the opportunity to catch the first few minutes of footage from the film was simply something that I couldn’t resist.

Cinemablend points out that this isn’t actually the first four minutes, and that there’s another scene preceding this footage, but in any case, it’s a freaking wonderful few moments of footage that skyrockets my excitement for the feature.

Naturally, if you don’t want anything spoiled you should probably avoid watching (and reading below this sentence).

The clip plays off as a video diary of Peter’s journey to meet The Avenger’s (culminating with him stealing Cap’s shield), getting a new suit, annoying the hell out of Happy, and… having to sit around awkwardly while Stark talks about his hopes that Aunt May is wearing something skimpy.

A new trailer is attached to the end of the footage, though it’s composed mostly of footage that has already been released in some form or another.

In any case, we’re just a few days away from what sounds (based on early reactions) like an actually freaking good Spider-Man film, and I couldn’t be more excited.

Take a look at the footage below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theatres this Friday!

Spider-man: Homecoming definitely looks like it’s going to be worth watching this summer.

I’ve been interested to see what Marvel was going to do with the Spiderman story after his cameo in Captain America: Civil War. The scenes with the young Spidey were hilarious as he switched between fangirling over the fact that he was SO CLOSE to the Avengers while simultaneously fighting them.

I’ve never seen a Spiderman movie that I actually liked. I always thought the Peter Parker they portrayed would be more likely to become a stalker or serial killer than a superhero. But Tom Holland comes across more as a cute, quirky, nerdy guy who just wants to become an Avenger. I also like the addition of Tony Stark (obviously played by Robert Downey Jr.) as a sort of surrogate uncle/mentor figure (although, I could just be happy to see RDJ on screen, and who can blame me?).

SPOILER FREE TRAILER POST!

Finally, a Spider-Man that’s home at Marvel Studios where he belongs. So much good going on in this trailer: web-wings, integration in an established universe, and an Uncle Ben that’s already in the grave. We love Ben. Love him so much we can’t bare to see him die again for a third time. It’s about time to web-sling into the unexplored parts of Spidey’s mythos.

It may be to early to call, but this is Spider-Man done right.

Check out the trailer below to see for yourselves…

Earlier this year, it was reported that Batman himself Michael Keaton will be joining the cast of Spider-Man Homecoming as a mystery character.

Rumor had it that Keaton would be playing spidey’s arch enemy The Vulture.  While there was still some speculation and hesitation around it, MCU head honcho Kevin Feige has confirmed the news himself.

In a Doctor Strange interview with The Toronto Sun, the publication asked him what cool things fans can expect in future films, and Feige dropped the bomb that Keaton’s vulture will be a fan favorite. What do you think of Michael Keaton as the vulture? Are you still excited for the film? Tell us in the comments below!

You read that right! We have our first confirmed appearance of an Avenger in the newest Spider-Man reboot. For those of you who have read Civil War, Iron Man and Spidey have a sort of relationship where Stark gives Parker some new tech to go with a new suit.

IronSpider

For those of you keeping count, this DOES NOT count as one of those contractual appearances Robert Downey Jr. has with Marvel. Instead, Downey was able to negotiate a new contract with Marvel and Sony that makes this entirely separate. Downey will also reprise his role as Iron Man in Infinity War parts one and two.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to release July 7, 2017!

Longtime Geekscape friend Chris Mancini from The Comedy Film Nerds arrives on the show to talk about his new comic book ‘Long Ago And Far Away’, currently in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign! Fernando Pinto, who created the Geekscape logo, is the book’s artist so you should probably go check it out! While Chris is here we give our thoughts on Disney’s new ‘The Jungle Book’ and Richard Linklater’s ‘Everybody Wants Some’! Plus, the follow up to ‘Jurassic World’ gets a director and some news has surfaced on Sony and Marvel’s new Spider-Man film ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’! Enjoy!
