You may have believed that Academy Award Winner Helen Mirren has done it all. During her long, prestigious run as one of Hollywood’s most accomplished present-day actresses, Mirren has stood bravely as a grieving Queen Elizabeth II, and played the wife of artistic greats Alfred Hitchcock and Leo Tolstoy. She’s also shunned the blacklisted Dalton Trumbo as a gossip columnist, made the difficult decisions as a British Colonel in a modern war against terrorism, rivaled a talented Indian chef, been embroiled in an upscale 1930s murder mystery, and she’s even shown a little skin in a fundraising campaign for a group of middle-aged women. But there’s one stone left unturned for the great Helen Mirren, the actress has yet to immerse herself in the horror genre. That is until now, as Mirren stars in the Spierig brothers’ twist on an ages-long tale of the haunted firearms heiress, Sarah Winchester.

A secretly unstable psychiatrist Eric Price (Jason Clarke) is approached by the minority owners of the Winchester Repeating Arms company, and they seek his services in a mental evaluation of their owner, Sarah Winchester (Mirren). Since the recent and unexpected deaths of her husband and child, Sarah has ordered the construction of a costly, enormous mansion intended to house demonic spirits and keep them under control. Yet, as Price moves into her lavish estate to conduct his week-long evaluation of Sarah, he begins to wonder if she’s not so crazy after all.

Sibling directors Michael and Peter Spierig immerse the audience in a dark and creepy period-piece horror that’s low on scares and built from an elementary and unimaginative story. The acting talent of Helen Mirren and Jason Clarke go to complete waste with careless writing and hollow characters. Winchester possesses promise in theory, but unravels into sheer chaos throughout its dull and worthless execution. The film’s laughable attempts at mustering up fear and tension involve cheap jump scares and quick cuts comprising of creepy CGI effects. With Winchester, the effort is lacking on all accounts and even filters into the performances of the film’s lead stars, Mirren and Clarke, who should have simply stayed away from this absolute dumpster-fire of a story. There are bad movies, and then there is Winchester. With virtually zero redeeming qualities to speak of, do yourself a favor and stay as far away as possible from this sorry excuse of a horror film.

Briefly: Following the actually-kinda-cool trailer from a few weeks back, Paramount has just debuted five new character posters for Alan Taylor’s Terminator Genisys.

The images feature Sarah Conner, John Connor (in all his spoiler-filled glory), Kyle Reese, and the T-800 and T-1000.

It can’t be worse than Terminator: Salvation, can it? It looks really heavy on the homage, but it could still be fun, right? I don’t dig the whole John Connor is a Terminator thing, and Sarah Connor looks entirely too smiley in her poster, but I do have to say that I’m still looking forward to seeing what the full feature has to offer.

Take a look at the posters below, and let us know what you think! Terminator Genisys hits theatres on July 1st!

T3000

T1000

T800

Reese

When John Connor (Jason Clarke), leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Now, Sgt. Reese finds himself in a new and unfamiliar version of the past, where he is faced with unlikely allies, including the Guardian (Arnold Schwarzenegger), dangerous new enemies, and an unexpected new mission: To reset the future…

It’s still got a stupid title (which I imagine has something to do with the huge spoiler that’s just been revealed), but Terminator Genisys looks pretty damned cool. The first trailer for the film was clearly made for fans of the franchise, mirroring scenes and quips directly from the first three films (and ignoring Salvation entirely), but today’s new trailer is definitely the one that ‘what the hell’ed me into being excited for the movie.

Here you go:

https://youtu.be/rGSxss7gWak

Yep. It certainly looks as though JC is the bad guy, doesn’t it? Which essentially turns the entire series on its head, which is probably what it needed more than anything. Seeing this, I’d guess that the Genisys subtitle is also the name of the program or experiment that John’s been through to turn him into something more than man or machine.

In any case, I’m down. Terminator Genisys hits theatres on July 1st. How do you feel about it?

Briefly: So we still don’t know anything about Matt Reeves’ follow-up to last year’s fantastic Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (including its title), but we now know that we really won’t be seeing it any time soon.

The sequel was original slated for Summer of 2016, but FOX today pushed the title an entire year, to July 17th, 2014.

Dang.

Are you looking forward to the sequel? What did you think of Dawn? Sound out below!

The official trailer for Terminator: Genisys is now online.

http://youtu.be/62E4FJTwSuc

Do you love the Terminator series? I mean really, really love it? Because that’s who this movie seems to be targeting. Iconic lines, scenes, characters, and Arnold Schwarzenegger himself are in this new reimagining of the Terminator films, and Genisys is the, excuse me, genesis of a new series. Alan Taylor, director of Thor: The Dark World, will be at the helm of this… I can’t resist, genesis. I’m so sorry! I almost Googled for Sega Genesis pictures.

As for the trailer: it looks good! It’s what you would expect from a modern sci-fi action movie. Things explode and stuff. Yeah, it’s cool!

This new chapter in the franchise will star, besides Arnold Schwarzenegger of course, Emilia Clarke (Yes, Khaleesi), Jason Clarke (no relation), Jai Courtney (just announced for Suicide Squad), Matt Smith (Yes, the Eleventh Doctor), J.K. Simmons (Yes, J. Jonah Jameson), and Lee-Byung Hung (Yes, Storm Shadow). They just took everyone involved in genre franchises, didn’t they?

Terminator: Genisys will be released July 1, 2015. Oh man, 4th of July weekend? It will make so much money.

Following a well-received origin story that turned into a worldwide box office smash grossing just shy of $500 million, it was a no-brainer to expect a sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes. Yet, rather than immediately churning out a rushed and thoughtless continuation, the studio handled things perfectly by assembling a whole new team and taking the necessary time to get the project done right. Consequently, director Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes stands tall as one of the summer blockbuster season’s finest films.

A decade after a deadly virus first spread and super intelligent apes escaped into the forest, the human population has become scarce and their ability to survive hinges on a broken down dam miles from civilization. A team of explorers venture deep into the barren wilderness and stumble upon hordes of advanced chimps lead by Casear. Malcolm (Jason Clarke) explains their desperation and Caesar gives the humans permission to occupy the land and fix up the dam. However, co-existence between apes and humans becomes more difficult than either species could have ever imagined.

Similar to its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes decides to hook its viewers by establishing an instant connection with Caesar and the rest of the primate colony. Yet, director Matt Reeves and his team of writers deserve an abundance of credit for their exemplary job at building a bond from the film’s opening sequence. From there a cleverly constructed story combining subplots of greed, jealousy and revenge take the wheel and steer the film to an action-packed and equally dramatic finale. Supported by sound performances from rising star Jason Clarke and amazing CGI work based on the movements and expressions of the under-appreciated artist Andy Serkis, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes swings past the first film and represents a class of its own.

dawn2

Despite my affection for the latest installment to the storied franchise of films, there were a few concerning aspects. One such area is the long-winded and action obsessed third act that I usually find troubling during the blockbuster season. However, a brilliant foundation and captivating story helps to soften the blows. Furthermore, images of apes wielding machine guns and riding on horseback to a brutal ambush seemed a little overboard to me. But once again, I felt compelled to overlook these minor annoyances thanks to a fundamentally strong creation from Matt Reeves and his team.

Although I felt as though Dawn of the Planet of the Apes begins wonderfully and slowly weakens throughout, the end result was still a fine piece of work that transcends the prototypical summer blockbuster. Don’t be fooled into believing that the feature is a revolutionary masterpiece, but find solace in accepting the film for what it is … an entertaining and well-executed final product. I enjoyed the story, found the acting to be believable and embraced the ride. Thankfully, I wasn’t disappointed.

Briefly: We’re just ten days away from the highly-anticipated release of Fox’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and Fox and Motherboard have teamed up to release a fantastic series of tie-in prequels for the film.

There’s a ten year gap between Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and each of the three short films depicts what the world is going through at a particular time. It’s really a great way to bridge the gap between the two films, and they certainly help to get me even more excited for Dawn.

Take a look at the shorts below, and let us know what you think.

Amidst a widespread viral outbreak known as the ‘Simian Flu,’ a mother is quarantined after testing positive for the virus, leaving her husband and daughter to fend for themselves.

Five years after the Simian Flu all but wiped out humanity, an orphaned teenage girl survives by bartering things she has stolen from dead people’s homes.

The journey of a shotgun through the hands of several ill-fated owners as the ‘Simian Flu’ ravages the world around them.

Motherboard will also debut a documentary tomorrow, in which the crew goes to Liberia to discover ‘Monkey Island,’ a place solely inhabited by former lab tested chimpanzees. They talk to the fearful locals and meet the scientists involved in the testing facility 25 years ago. Take a look at the trailer below.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theatres on July 11th.

Briefly: We saw the haunting final trailer for the film just a few days back, and now Fox has debuted an amazing look into the film’s groundbreaking special effects.

In ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’, a growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Briefly: The final trailer for next month’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes has just hit the web, and it’s definitely a haunting one.

The video digs far deeper into the Caesar / Malcolm relationship than we’ve seen thus far, and shows us more footage of the apes just wanting to be peaceful (and the humans expectedly messing it up). The trailer is mostly new footage, and there are some spoiler-y moments here, so if you’re trying to keep things a surprise, I’d avoid this one. Otherwise, it’s awesome.

Briefly: This is just too cool.

TotalFilm has debuted some amazing performance capture footage for Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. It’s absolutely mind-blowing footage, and I really, really can’t wait to see more.

Briefly: Following the new stills from a few weeks back, Fox has just debuted the theatrical trailer for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The new preview digs deep into the film’s plot, outlining the touching relationship between Caesar and Jason Clarke’s Malcolm. It also outlines how that relationship is doomed to fail… because we’re humans, mostly.

As a huge fan of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, I’m immensely looking forward to this one. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes hits theatres on July 11th.

Briefly: This is one sequel that we can’t freaking wait for.

20th Century Fox today debuted the first TV spot for this Summer’s highly anticipated Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (if you missed it, you can check out the first trailer here).

Briefly: 20th Century Fox today debuted four new character posters for next year’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

The posters feature some of the film’s more prominent apes (I’m guessing), who all look like they’re beyond pissed-off at something (probably humans… we’re kind of dicks).

Fox has also announced that the first trailer for the film will hit the web next Wednesday, December 16th at 6:00am.

We’ve already seen set photos, but Dawn of the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves has just given us our first official look at the film.

Academy Award Winning director Kathryn Bigelow’s brand new film, Zero Dark Thirty, opens with a disclosure stating the the movie is based on first-hand accounts of actual events. This sets the stage for one of the most authentic and realistic motion pictures in recent memory. Politically unbiased and emotionally charged, Zero Dark Thirty completely delivers on its marketing tagline: “The greatest manhunt in history”.

Jessica Chastain stars as Maya, a fiery young CIA Analyst who, in some ways, believes she’s destined to find the United States’ Most Wanted Fugitive, Osama Bin Laden. Hired by the U.S. government fresh out of High School, Maya is sent to Afghanistan and Pakistan to take part in detainee interrogations and gather vital intelligence after the tragic events of September 11th. Throughout a tireless decade long search for the fugitive, Maya follows a seemingly unlikely lead that ultimately results in the May 2nd, 2011 execution of Osama Bin Laden.

Gripping and relentless, Zero Dark Thirty is the epitome of top-flight modern day filmmaking. Bigelow’s follow up to her 2009 Best Picture winner, The Hurt Locker, faces its critics and audiences with a humble sense of entitlement that whispers “repeat” for the director and film. One of the most commendable aspects of Bigelow’s work is Zero Dark Thirty‘s ability to slowly shift the picture’s focus from start to finish. What begins as a nation’s quest for justice, filters itself down to one woman’s unyielding battle for resolution, and that woman is brilliantly portrayed by Jessica Chastain. The 2012 Academy Award Nominee’s towering performance is unrivaled by any other lead female’s work over the past calendar year. Therefore, I would expect to hear Chastain’s name called in late February when they hand out the Oscar for Best Actress. Screenwriter Mark Boal’s well-crafted character development is brilliantly executed by Chastain and it adds an enormous dimension to film. Alongside Maya, the audience grinds through the highs and lows of a ten year search. For as exhausting and intense as the ride is, the night-visioned finale provides a gratifying and tempered conclusion. By demonstrating admirable restraint, Bigelow’s respectful and never overly-patriotic ending packs an even bigger punch. With an unfathomable amount of decisions to be made, Bigelow seems to make all of the right ones and the final product is one of 2012’s greatest achievements.

Back in the Fall of 2012, Zero Dark Thirty was nothing more than a quiet dark horse on the road to the Oscars. But now that the feature has finally reached theatres in Los Angeles and New York City, it’s clearer than ever that Kathryn Bigelow’s masterpiece is a force to be reckoned with. The only minor flaw with the film appears during a short lull in the third act. As a movie where the end result is predetermined, the whole “Maya vs. the world”  subplot is taken the smallest bit too far. The entire audience already knows that President Obama eventually gives the green light on the raid but after investing over two hours into the film, Bigelow continues to harp on the notion that many higher ups involved questioned Maya’s certainty. Just as the feature begins a slight decline, Zero Dark Thirty abruptly refocuses and gets back on course with an edge-of-your-seat finale.

While some will inevitably rummage through Zero Dark Thirty in hopes of finding a political agenda, the truth is one doesn’t exist. Yes, the movie touches on the idea that enhanced interrogation techniques were used in order to obtain valuable intelligence, but who can argue the greater effectiveness of such actions? Yet, Zero Dark Thirty mindfully avoids addressing the even bigger question, is it worth it? Acknowledging some Hollywood dramatization, it’s important to view the film in an entertainment-only context. Although we will never know the whole truth behind the decade long hunt for Osama Bin Laden, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty gives us a captivating and realistic story to cling to. Due out in theatres all across the country on January 11th, 2013, this is one Oscar contender you won’t want to miss.
