Briefly: I’m still not quite caught up on the series, so I’m definitely avoiding this video (classic Derek), but HBO has just debuted a new trailer for Game of Thrones upcoming sixth season, which premieres on April 24th.

Take a look at the trailer below (if you’re better at keeping up with television than I am, of course).

Is Jon Snow dead? Is he totally coming back? What the hell is even happening and is Winter still coming?

I have no clue, but feel free to speculate below!

It’s a new season of Selina Meyers and her merry band of White House staffers. And Jonah.

After last season’s question of ‘Who won the election?’ the answer is: No One. “It’s a tied election.” As President Meyers so eloquently points out in the season’s trailer.

The new season will introduce a new mission for Selina. It has to be something her opponent wouldn’t do, like driving sober, or using the facilities without getting a hernia. The president has to look presidential, and usually that means knowing what medal an olympic team has won and not rubbing it in that they didn’t win first place, but third. She covers it up, or you know, not, in the Selina Meyer fashion.

Jonah is back. He’s like Herpes. Or a mrsa infection. Regardless of what disease Jonah equates himself to, no one is getting rid of Jonah Ryan. Selina is dating? Sleeping with John Slattery, yet she’s not going to be ‘that’ kind of President.

Points on the President’s schedule she’s going to have to deal with on this season of Veep? Chinese hackers. A massive drop in the stock market which leads them to potentially being Greece…”The country not the musical.” Last but not least, the bank bailouts, which according to the President is like having a man decide what part of his male anatomy he wants gone first. And according to Ben Cafferty, played by Kevin Dunn, he “could lose them both. I mean at this stage, they’re just purely decorative.”

Take a look the trailer for the new season. Season 5 premieres on April 24, 10:30pm, on HBO.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDesAgis8NU

In a newly released trailer, the sixth season of Game of Thrones, the audience is warned that “…the great game is terrifying.”

In the first few seconds of the trailer, with the guitar strings playing the beginning chords of ‘Wicked City’ the answer to the question that has plagued fans for nearly a year now is answered. “He’s gone.” is said of Jon Snow who lays in a bed of snow. So is Jon Snow dead? From the trailer, the answer is ‘Yes.’

Has Cersai Lanister, after taking the walk of shame, lived up to her repentance? If the declaration of “I choose violence” was anything to go by, I’m going to go with no. But that also comes after her brother/lover tells her that what was taken away from them was going to be taken back and more.

Other storylines that appeared for brief flashes revolve around a blind Arya Stark, a powerless Daenerys, and a somber Melisandre. We also see Bran with what looks like a white walker and Brienne of Tarth.

The fight for the throne continues on HBO on April 24. Take a look and let us know what you think.

Briefly: Following the very first teaser debut from back in December, and the official premiere date reveal last month, HBO has just debuted the first images from the series’ upcoming sixth season.

I’m not exactly caught up with the series, so I’m not really sure what’s going on in the images below. That said, they look pretty and I’m an idiot for not watching this series.

You can take a look at the images below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24th!

This season the series will actually develop the plot further than the released books have, due to the latest delay for George RR Martin’s The Winds of Winter. Those who have followed the novels, will you be watching the series this year knowing it will spoil the plot of the next book? Be sure to sound out in the comments below!

After the NFC Championship on Sunday, Fox finally aired the first installment of six, brand-new episodes of The X-Files. It’s been 14 long years since we’ve seen Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on our small screens.

THE X-FILES: L-R: Gillian Anderson as Dana Scully and David Duchovny as Fox Mulder. The next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES debuts with a special two-night event beginning Sunday, Jan. 24 (10:00-11:00 PM ET/7:00-8:00 PM PT), following the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, and continuing with its time period premiere on Monday, Jan. 25 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). The thrilling, six-episode event series, helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter and starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as FBI Agents FOX MULDER and DANA SCULLY, marks the momentous return of the Emmy Award- and Golden Globe-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history. ©2015 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Ed Araquel/FOX

The episode begins with a recap of what The X-Files is, who Mulder and Scully are, what kind of work they did, and what the X-Files were before the division of the FBI was shut down. So, if you have never seen an episode of The X-Files ever in your life, it’s a nice little recap for you so you’re not lost at sea without a life raft.

A key piece of what makes The X-Files is the theme song. We get that. Another key piece is the title sequence, which a lot of people were worried would change due to the technological advances, older actors, new cases; but never fear folks, the title sequence is exactly the same. It still holds that magical mystery and wonder in which perfectly dictates the X-Files show as a whole.

Fox released a 21 minute mini-documentary which explains what the fans can expect from the new episodes. We’ll get our dose of monster of the week, we’ll get the humor episodes, and what the X-Files have become infamous for – their mythology episodes. We also will have some familiar faces such as Annabeth Gish returning and new faces such as Community‘s Joel McHale.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgRUzEdPfHA

McHale plays Ted O’Malley, who is just as obsessed with the unexplained, if not possibly more, as Fox Mulder is. Mulder and Scully are called in to meet with this guy, by AD Skinner, who yes, is still at the FBI. O’Malley takes Mulder and Scully to the middle of quite literally nowhere, which Scully cracks – “Even Aliens can’t find this place.” There they meet a lovely woman named Sveta, played by Annet Mahendru, who, according to her Mulder met when she was a young girl, right after her first abduction.

Sveta was abducted by men, not aliens, boarded onto a ship where they scooped pieces of her stomach out. They impregnated her and then took her unborn baby from her. As she explained to Mulder, Scully, and O’Malley, she has pieces of memories, implants of other memories shielding what actually happened. Sound familiar X-Files fans? Scully listens to Sveta’s tale and as O’Malley explains it to Scully, she brushes him off, shuts him down because Dana Scully knows exactly what Sveta went through. Scully was abducted, had memories implanted for her to screen the actual going ons of what actually occurred during her abduction.

THE X-FILES: L-R: Guest star Annet Mahendru and Gillian Anderson. ©2016 Fox Broadcasting Co. It is revealed that there is a possibility that Sveta has Alien DNA. In a lab, Scully draws blood from Sveta to test to see if the woman does in fact have Alien DNA in her. Sveta points out that Mulder and Scully once were a couple. Check. They have a son together. Check. Mulder has been depressed and Scully diagnosed him with said depression. Check and Check. How does Sveta know all this? She can read minds and move things. When she tells Scully that she has no idea what they did to Sveta, Scully tries to assure her that she does in fact know. It’s not until Sveta reads Dana’s mind, that she corrects her statement. Dana Scully does know.

O’Malley takes Mulder to an un-disclosed location where in the middle of what looks like an airplane hangar is an ARV, otherwise known as an Alien Replica Vehicle. They built it and are able to fly it using free energy. Technology they’ve had since the 1940’s. Another thing that tipped off the red flag of Fox Mulder, the fact that they were able to make it disappear and he witnessed it happening. In a quick series of events, right after O’Malley announces to the world that he knows Dana Scully, Sveta is on television saying O’Malley put words in her mouth, apologizes to anyone who she may have fooled, Scully checks O’Malley’s site and it’s been shut down. The building in which the ARV is being held, gets infiltrated by Men and blown with the ARV in it and the scientists working on it, still inside.

There were a few surprises at the end. 1. Sveta gets blown up in her car, by what looks like an alien space ship. 2. Scully re-ran the DNA from Sveta, compared it to her own and they BOTH have Alien DNA. 3. The cigarette smoking man is BACK. And while, yes, he did get blown up, he was brought back and his face and hands are obviously damaged. How did he get saved? No one knows. Will Sveta be saved in the same fashion?

So with that all in mind, what did you guys think? And be sure to catch the next few episodes every Monday night on Fox.

Briefly: Following the very first teaser debut early last month, HBO has just officially announced when Game of Thrones will premiere its widely anticipated sixth season.

Season six will debut on Sunday, April 24th, meaning that I have just over two months to get through the last two seasons of the celebrated drama.

Yeah, I know. I have no idea what’s wrong with me.

In any case, this season the series will actually develop the plot further than the released books have, due to the latest delay for George RR Martin’s The Winds of Winter. Those who have followed the novels, will you be watching the series this year knowing it will spoil the plot of the next book? Be sure to sound out in the comments below!

And what’s this about Jon Snow?

American Crime’s anticipated second season won’t premiere until January 6th, but you can watch if for free right now via iTunes.

American Crime is an anthology series – the title remains the same while the season’s topic changes. Last season it centered on a murder while investigating the world in which we live in and how race is seen in America. This season the topic is sexual assault – did it happen, who did it, and what happens when it’s essentially brushed under the rug?

The topic of rape is brought up in the first thirty seconds when 911 gets a dispatch call from a distraught woman who wants to report the act. Throughout the episode we get the first few pieces of the puzzle as to why the call was placed. We find out who placed the call, why she placed the call, and we as viewers can only imagine the repercussions that will follow.

From the beginning of the episode we know it’s going to be a sensitive topic. The victim is high school aged, a transfer student, a kid with little to no friends – except his girlfriend who has baggage of her own to deal with. We meet the key players – the adults who will deal with the situation – the Coach, the victim’s mother, and the Headmistress. There are three worlds, three sets of lives that in their own bring drama.

The Coach, played with Timothy Hutton, has a daughter who is a cheerleader, a wife who is a photographer, and a team of boys who are teenagers and adolescents. He is honored at a charity event for bringing his team to victor multiple times over his six-year tenure at the school and it is evident that his team idolizes him, respects him, which is why the Headmistress tasks him with the duty of talking to his boys about the allegations that arise.

Anne, the victim’s mother, is played by Lili Taylor. She’s a working, single mom who wants nothing but the best for her son Taylor. She sent him to the expensive school so he could get the best education. Her world starts to teeter when she’s brought into speak with the dean over photos that appeared on social media, leading to her son’s suspension. After begging her son to show her the photos and being denied she turns to her son’s girlfriend who gives her what she wants. The photos. She approaches her son about it and after claims of not knowing what happens to him she goes to the Headmistress at the school.

The Headmistress, Leslie Graham, played by Felicity Huffman, is very protective of her school, of her teachers, of her students. She takes down a detailed report of what happened, alleged by Taylor’s mother and has the Coach look into it. Not wanting to call it rape, Huffman’s character directs Taylor’s mother to tread carefully on how she uses the word until they know what happened. Huffman’s character all but points fingers at the boy and claims that he was coherent enough to know what happened and didn’t stop it.

Upset that her son is being blamed for what happened, Taylor’s mother goes into the lobby of the school, calls 911 and says “I want to report a rape.”

American Crimes premieres January 6th 2016 on ABC.

Briefly: Following the first (spoilery) teaser poster from late last month, HBO has just debuted the very first video teaser for next year’s sixth season of Game of Thrones.

I’m not quite caught up on the series, so I’m definitely avoiding this video, but in any case, you can take a look at the teaser below!

It’s awesome, isn’t it?

Be sure to let us know what you hope to see in the upcoming episodes! Game of Thrones will return this April!

Briefly: I haven’t exactly finished last year’s fifth season of Game of Thrones, but HBO has just debuted the very first poster for the series’ upcoming sixth season, and… well, even I understand just how big of a deal this is.

I guess I have about five months to catch up (and to find out just what happened to Jon Snow), as this teaser image certainly renews my interest in the celebrated series.

Is he alive? Is he dead? This is like Glenn on The Walking Dead all over again (well, until last night I guess).

Take a look at the teaser image below, and let us know what you hope to see when Game of Thrones returns this April!

SockEmDead_Poster01_500x645

When the invitation arrived to attend Robert Rodriguez’s premiere screening of his latest short Sock ‘Em Dead, to say that I jumped at the opportunity would be an understatement—I still need to bring in some painters to patch the hole in my ceiling. I’ve been a fan of Rodriguez’s since discovering him with his film Desperado. I appreciate his rebellious approach to getting his projects made on his terms and turning out great entertainment come hell or high water.

The night finally arrived and I made my way to a Hollywood backstreet above the Walk of Fame to find an intimate crowd gathering off an alley adjacent a hidden parking lot. They were dressed with a rugged glamour and I knew I must’ve found the right spot.

Or maybe not?

The large imposing bouncer at the No Vacancy didn’t have my name on the guest list but it wasn’t any big deal because Andrea from the El Rey Network emerged like a ninja from an arrangement of shrubbery to update the list and get me in the door. Little did I realize at the time that this was only the beginning of my adventures for the evening. Once inside, I went up a series of staircases into a hallway with locked “hotel room” doors. Had I taken a wrong turn? No one was around to guide me and eventually, at the end of the hall, was a door that I found to be unlocked. Inside the room was a “call girl” who asked me to wait for a moment, at which point there was a fevered exchanging of interesting glances before she cleared me to enter—was that the password?—a precise choreography of glares and come-hither stares? She activated a panel that split the bed apart and revealed a staircase hidden in the walls. Excelsior! I descended down into the wonderful reception that the El Rey Network had put together for the evening.

“From Dusk Till Dawn” Cast | www.goldfra.me

The guests were made up of my kind of celebrities and entertainment professionals—many of which were past, present and future colleagues of Robert Rodriguez, as well as the man himself. At the bar, I ordered a mezcal and enjoyed mingling with the other guests. Rodriguez provided the details of how Happy Socks had approached him to make a promotional piece for their company. He liked the idea and agreed but wanted to do more with it, so he waited until production began again on the TV series From Dusk Till Dawn, when he could use the resources that were assembled for the show. He tapped Madison Davenport as the lead but there are a lot of other Rodriguez ensamble favorites that make cameos throughout—Wilmer Valderrama was a hoot and Danny Trejo was perfect.

It’s a quick fast paced short that provides a great behind-the-scenes set up and then gets straight to the action in true Rodriguezian fashion—and to quote the man himself, he shot the whole thing “mariachi style,” his shorthand reference to getting in, getting the shots, and getting it done fast and efficient. To likewise make the review of it fast and efficient, it’s a real kick in the pants and absolutely worth the ride! To say much more, I think would do a disservice to the excitement of the initial experience.

Enjoy!

Chatting with Davenport after the film had screened was a real treat. I think most often, when actors—or anyone—knows they’re being put on the spot, there can be a bit of professional distance that kicks in. However, it was a “first name” sort of moment with Madison as genuine delight lit up her face. The audience reaction was energetically enthusiastic and when I asked her if it was a different experience from seeing it in a dark editing room, she was quick to correct me. “No, this is the first time I’ve gotten to see it finished! It’s so cool. I think people liked it.” I think she was right—a lot.

I got the chance to speak with Rodriguez some more too, with the hopes of getting details on some of his projects that have been simmering for a while such as, BarbarellaMadman and the rights he acquired for Heavy Metal. Unfortunately there are no new details he was willing to divulge at this time—however I took the opportunity to ask if he ever planned to do a feature-length adaptation of his original award winning short that kicked everything off for him as a young director, Bedhead. I was delighted to hear that he actually did have a feature-length script that he has ready to go the moment the timing is right! Meantime, I guess we’ll have to make due with his epic project underway with James Cameron, Alita: Battle Angel. Stoked!

A surprise highlight of the evening was getting to spend some time with actor Ted Raimi and his fiance, the lovely Suzanne Keilly, who is a writer working on Ash vs Evil Dead. Keilly’s tales of the writers’ room were a lot of fun—writers coming up with the craziest stuff they could think of and then following through to make sure the idea made it on camera. Initially, it sounded like Starz (producing and airing the show) may have been a bit hesitant but, after seeing the pilot, they understood what gold they had on their hands and were excited for whatever the writers could dish out! Sounds like a recipe for fans getting some sugar, baby. Of course, I had to ask Raimi and Keilly about whether we would be seeing him on the show. His response was cryptic but I think that we will have something to look forward to. I also couldn’t resist the opportunity to reminisce with him about Drag Me to Hell and (a personal favorite) Legend of the Seeker—his experience on that show sounded very enjoyable, working in New Zealand with Bridget Regan and Craig Horner, both of which he spoke highly of. I was happy to hear that Ted is a fan of Geekscape saying that he’s not just an actor he’s also a lover of genre entertainment himself and appreciates Geekscape’s personal touch approach to keeping geeky fans informed. I’ve heard stories of what a nice guy Ted Raimi is but I had no idea what a genuine pleasure it is have the opportunity to speak with him. There was a lot of agreement about this from the Geekscape staff so, Mr. Raimi, this is your official invitation to join us on the show whenever you have the opportunity. We’re all huge fans and would love to have you!

By the time I had the charmingly quirky layout of No Vacancy down, it was time to head out into the night again. Much as I wanted to stay, I guess they live up to their name and I had to settle for a goodnight wink from the “call girl” guarding the gates to the evening’s revelries.

The marvelously ambitious El Rey Network and innovative Happy Socks really put together a fantastic evening on par with the excellent presentation of the channel’s rebel broadcast. The team-up here with Happy Socks didn’t immediately make sense to me but after receiving a set of Rodriguez’s signature blood and vampire inspired socks from Happy Socks, the pairing made sense—a couple of mavericks from different walks of life joining forces in a way that no one else could come up with, let alone pull off. Sock ‘Em Dead is a wonderfully fun shot of adrenaline that premieres Tuesday, October 20th on HappySocks.com and I absolutely recommend you check it out for a good time!

From the press release:

Maverick filmmaker, Robert Rodriguez, is bringing his action-packed, fierce style to a partnership project with unique high quality sock and underwear company Happy Socks. Rodriguez has collaborated on a short film called SOCK’EM DEAD, featuring an A-list cast and crew with an authentic cinematic style, shot and edited entirely at Rodriguez’s Austin, Texas based full functioning production facility, Troublemaker Studios. SOCK’EM DEAD stars Madison Davenport and features some fun celebrity supporting roles such as long time collaborator Danny Trejo as well as From Dusk till Dawn star, Wilmer Valderrama.

The short film will premiere globally on October 20, 2015 on www.happysocks.com. To celebrate this collaboration, Happy Socks will release a series of three pairs of socks which Robert Rodriguez designed, available October 12th.

Briefly: HBO has finally let us know exactly when we’ll be able to return to Westerns.

The network today revealed that Game of Thrones anticipated fifth season will premiere on April 12th.

Late last year HBO announced that a standalone streaming service would debut alongside the show’s fifth season, though there was no mention of the service in today’s announcement.

Are you ready for the long break to end? What have you been occupying your time with since Game of Thrones left us last? Maybe playing that awesome Telltale game?

Tyrion

Briefly: There’s some crazy talent attached to this one!

Briefly: Game of Thrones fourth season premiered to HBO Go crashing numbers just two days ago… so HBO, naturally, renewed the series for not one, but two more seasons.

According to the press release, “The season four premiere of GAME OF THRONES on Sunday, April 6 (9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT) was watched by an average of 6.6 million viewers, making it HBO’s most-watched program since the finale of “The Sopranos” in 2007 (11.9 million viewers). The premiere improved 52% over last season’s premiere and 23% over last season’s finale. GAME OF THRONES added an additional 1.6 million viewers from the 11:00 p.m. and 1:00 a.m. replays, for a gross audience of 8.2 million viewers for the night. Season three of the series had an average gross audience of 14.4 million viewers per episode.”

That’s a big increase.

HBO Programming President Michael Lombardo stated that “GAME OF THRONES is a phenomenon like no other. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, along with their talented collaborators, continue to surpass themselves, and we look forward to more of their dazzling storytelling.”

Are you looking forward to (at least) two more years in Westeros? What did you think of Sunday’s premiere? Sound out below!

Briefly: Following the humorous featurette from a few days back, HBO has just released a brand new trailer for the next season of Game of Thrones.

The video clocks in at just over a minute and a half, and seems to include mostly new, mostly exciting new footage, so take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you hope to see when Game of Thrones premieres on April 6th!

Briefly: We’re now just a few weeks away from the highly anticipated premiere of Game of Thrones fourth season, and HBO has yet again released a new featurette for the series.

This time, it’s not a featurette about the upcoming episodes, but instead about how the series came to be in the first place. As the description reads, the video offers a “brief and entertaining history of how the HBO series came to be. Executive Producers and Writers David Benioff and Dan Weiss tell the entertaining and sometimes hard-to-believe journey of how the hugely popular book series are/were made into a smash HBO series. Narrated by Charles Dance, viewers get an insider’s look as only the creators could tell.”

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the new season. Game of Thrones premieres on April 6th!

Briefly: During last night’s True Detective finale (which I haven’t had a chance to watch yet, so shhh), HBO debuted a chill-inducing new trailer for next month’s premiere of Game of Thrones.

The new preview features a ton of new footage (including a very brief glimpse of a dragon), and definitely gives us more plot than the previous trailers contained. As always, everything looks very impressive, and the performances are super affective.

The videos all come from the official Game of Thrones Vine account (meaning that each teaser is less than six seconds long), and all end with the announcement of when we’ll be able to see a full trailer, which is this Sunday, January 12th, at 8:58PM Eastern.

Take a look at the teasers below, and let us know what you’re hoping to see on Sunday!

Briefly: It’s been a long, cold Winter since the third season of Game of Thrones concluded all the way back in June. You had plenty of time to catch up on George R.R. Martin’s series of novels (but you didn’t, did you), and now we know just when TV’s most epic drama will return for a fourth season.

It’s a little later than we’d hoped (seeing as, well, we want it right now), and even a little later than last year’s premiere at the end of March. We can all return to Westeros on April 6th at 9PM.

What do you hope to see in season four? Some of the slow-burn events that have been building since the pilot, maybe? Have you recovered from the red wedding yet? Sound out and speculate below!

Briefly: HitRecord on TV is finally here! And nearly two weeks before its premiere on regular ol’ television.

HitRecord creator Joseph Gordon-Levitt has taken to YouTube to premiere the pilot episode, which you can view in its entirety below. The pilot features content from more than 426 contributors, which is absolutely incredible for a 23 minute episode. Here’s what Gordon-Levitt had to say about the release:

Ladies and gentlemen, I am beside myself with joy and anticipation :oD It is my sincere pleasure to present the very first episode of HITRECORD ON TV! Watch the entire first episode here before it premieres on television.

Everything you’re gonna see on this show was made collaboratively on our site — hitRECord.org — and the work of 426 Contributing Artists is featured in this particular episode. There’s gonna be 8 episodes this season, each revolving around a different theme, like RE: Space, RE: The Other Side, and RE: Money. And since this is our first ever episode, I figured the theme of this one would be RE: The Number One. HITRECORD ON TV will be coming out on January 18th on a new cable channel called Pivot.

I’m deeply proud of this show, and I think you’re realllllly gonna like it. Honestly, making this thing together with all the artists from around the world in our hitRECord community has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life so far. So, without any further ado, enjoy the show!

Check out the episode below, and let us know if you’re excited to see the rest of the season! Hitrecord on TV premieres on Pivot on January 18th! While we’re on the topic of JGL, how about his Sandman adaptation?

Hollywood got a taste of anime glamour Tuesday night at the Egyptian Theater with the premiere of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part III: The Rebellion Story. I spoke with Marketing Specialist at Aniplex, Joanna Metoki, about the event. She mentioned the first people to get in line arrived around noon (the event page said doors open at 5:30PM with the film starting at 7PM). Anime fans are dedicated! Regarding the fans, Metoki said, “you could feel the excitement” and that you “could tell the fans were serious about this movie.” She also added “the fans were amazing!” I asked Metoki which Madoka character she liked best and she said Mami was her favorite  because “she was so passionate about what she was doing,” and she liked that Mami was a mentor and helped the other girls.

From Left to Right: Christina Vee (Homura), Sarah Williams (Sayaka), Mitsutoshi Kubata (President of Shaft), Atsuhiro Iwakami (Aniplex producer), Lauren Landa (Kyoko), Cassandra Lee (Kyubey), Christine Marie Cabanos (Madoka), Alexander von David (English ADR Director) *The voice actors are from the English cast*

As I surveyed the fans I noticed many cosplayers dressed in Madoka Magica outfits. One of the first groups I talked to came all the way from Las Vegas, Arizona and New Mexico to attend the premiere! They arrived in full cosplay around 2PM. When asked if they had trouble picking out who will cosplay which character, they said their choices just fell into place. They have all been cosplaying for a few years and met mainly through conventions but stayed in touch via Skype. This event was such a big deal to them that they planned their trip as soon as they saw the trailer on part 1 and 2 of Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie (part 1 and 2 screened together last year).

From Left to Right: Ana, Katrina, Aubree, Jude

Another friendly group came from a closer location, Claremont, CA. They also have been cosplaying for a few years and met through school. Last year, some of them saw part 1 and 2 twice because not everyone could make it to the same screening. Jacob decided to crossplay (dress as a character of the opposite sex) because there really are no boys in the show. He also mentioned that it was actually nice to wear a skirt and tights. I was rather impressed that he even wore fake lashes thought he mentioned they were hard to put on.

From Left to Right: Jacob, Samantha, Madelynn

Getting in line somewhat on the later side, around 6PM, this young lady still managed to rock her cosplay. She attended a screening last year but was not able to make it to the premiere. As soon as ticket sales were announced (a friend clued her in) she made sure to get a ticket to this year’s premiere! She mentioned she has been casually cosplaying for about five years and she chose Kyoko because she likes that Kyoko is bratty in order to cope with the troubles she has endured.

Hope

Along with cosplays of specific characters, I spotted a cute gothic lolita outfit. She mentioned she had just got the dress and wanted an occasion to wear it. The premiere of an anime film was the perfect opportunity and she felt the unicorns on the dress suited the event. She was also sporting a Madoka key chain/charm that she purchased at last year’s event.

Not only were there fans who cosplayed, there were some professional cosplayers at the event that posed on the red carpet with the voice actors, handed out gift bags and added a huge slice of kawaii (Japanese for ‘cute’) to the event. I spoke with Madoka herself (Jessie) about her experience at the event.

Characters from Left to Right: Mami, Kyoko, Lauren Landa (English voice of Kyoko) Homura, Madoka, Sayaka

K: How was it cosplaying at the Madoka premiere?

J: A lot of fun! It’s always nice getting to meet people who go to these events and work with the companies.

K: Did you make your costume?

J: Yes.

K: How did you get involved with Aniplex?

J: I was hired by ACParadise

K: Are you a fan of the Madoka series?

J: Yes!

K: Any memorable moments from the premiere?

J: The producer wearing a tie to match my costume was pretty great, plus the movie was amazing.

At the screening, there was a pretty awesome merchandise table that had domestic merchandise and special merchandise imported from Japan just for the event! Aniplex provided a printed sheet/purchase form that people were able to look at before they reached the actual goodies. They also made announcements when items sold out (many items did sell out!) so that customers knew before reaching the cash register. The merchandise that remained after the premiere will be sold at the Downtown Independent screenings, so if you could not make the premiere, you might be in luck! Anime Jungle was the exclusive vendor selling the merchandise this year (as well as last year) and I spoke with their general manager, Tetsu Shiota. Anime Jungle is a store in Little Tokyo (as well as in Japan!); they usually have a booth at conventions and at special events.

I also interviewed EJ Rivera, Marketing Specialist at Aniplex, about the event.

Congratulations on a sold out premiere! How do you think the event went overall?

Thank you very much. The event went pretty well.  It was great to see the fans having a great time and enjoying Madoka Magica together along with our special guests.

Were you surprised by how quickly tickets sold?

Very surprised; tickets for the event sold out immediately after they went on sale. It pretty much shows how strong the following is for the Madoka Magica Series.

What was your favorite part of the evening?

My favorite part of the evening was the Talk Session following the movie; it was great to see both Mr. Kubota (President of SHAFT) and Mr. Iwakami (Aniplex Producer) provide some in-depth insight on the Madoka Magica series and –Rebellion– itself. It was also great to see the fans enjoying the Talk Session. We definitely wanted to give the fans a unique and special experience at this event.

The premiere expanded from last year’s premiere! Why the change in theater and scale of the event?

Seeing how popular the first two movies were here in the US, we really wanted to give the fans a memorable experience when attending this event. We weighed our options and believed the Egyptian Theater would be the best venue to host this special event.

How are fans receiving the film?

From what I saw from the US Premiere Event, it looks like the fans enjoyed the film. It was great to see everybody in the theater clapping once the credits started.

Any final comments on the event?

On behalf of Aniplex of America, I would like to thank everybody who attended the Madoka Magica –Rebellion– US Premiere Event here in Los Angeles, CA. We hope that you enjoyed the event and we look forward to organizing more events like this in the future.

Today has been quite a day! First, conferences from Microsoft, EA, Ubisoft, and Sony are still ongoing preceding E3 tomorrow, Apple’s WWDC kicked off today, and now the world premiere of Man of Steel.

There are a ton of prominent celebrities at the gathering, and I’m sure we’ll see a ton of people that were involved with the film too. Us peasants have a few days to go until we can see Man of Steel, but it’s great to see that the world is excited for it.

You can watch a live stream of the red carpet event below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Man of Steel hits theatres this Friday!

Just five days ago the premiere date for Game of Thrones season 3 was announced with a neat looking (though completely unrevealing) teaser poster. Today HBO continues the tease with a 15 second long trailer that features absolutely no new footage (or footage of any sort).

Seriously, why does this EXCITE me so much!? Just 132 more days until we finally get to see what Winter brings!

I can still recall the season 2 finale of Game of Thrones like it was yesterday. I haven’t read any of George RR Martin’s acclaimed fantasy novels, so I was surprised as shit to hear those bells ring, and see the white walkers (freaking zombies!) shambling across that barren, snowy wasteland. For mere seconds, Winter was here… and then just as quickly as season 2 came into our lives, it was all over.

Today, thanks to HBO’s just released teaser poster, we finally know when Winter will return! Game of Thrones is set to premiere its third season on March 31, just after our real world Winter concludes.

I’m excited as hell. How about you?

Earlier this month NBC delayed the season 4 premiere of Community indefinitely. The news came just 10 days before the set date, and was horrible news for fans everywhere.

It appears as though a new date has now be set. Deadline reports (later followed by cast member tweets) that the premiere date is set for February 7th… months and months from now.

It sucks, and there isn’t much else to say. We should have already seen two episodes, and instead we’ll be waiting 100 more days to even see one. The only positive here is that the show is returning to its original timeslot rather than moving to Friday as initially reported.

100 more days. Plenty of time to catch up on Whitney.

As most of you know, AMC’s popular adaptation of the ongoing Image series The Walking Dead premiered its third season last night.

I’m hearing pretty good things about the premiere. I gave up on the show partway through Season 2 (come on, admit how boring it was), but upon reading all the positive reviews may have to give the series another chance. Our writer Scott liked it, commenting via twitter that “The season premiere of The Walking Dead was better than the entirety of season 2”. Sounds pretty good to me.

AMC must be having some sort of celebration today, as the huge amount of viewers that tuned in to last night’s airing was just revealed. Over 10 million viewers tuned into the first showing, an over 50% increase from last season, as well as breaking the record for the most watched basic cable telecast ever.

From the press release:

Last night, AMC premiered season three of “The Walking Dead” and outdelivered cable and broadcast hits including “Hatfields & McCoys,” “Jersey Shore,” “Modern Family,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “The Voice.”

The 9pm ET premiere garnered 10.9 million viewers and a 7.4 HH rating making it the highest rated episode in series history, and growing more than 50% over last season’s premiere. The season 3 premiere now reigns as the biggest telecast for any drama series in basic cable history among all viewers. “The Walking Dead” encored at 10pm with 3.5 million viewers and midnight with 850,000 viewers delivering 15.2 million viewers for the night.

Looks like Zombie fever has never been stronger. Let’s hope they’ll all check out the Geekscape co-produced Doc of the Dead when it hits too!

FilmDistrict has announced that the troubled remake of 1984’s Red Dawn will premiere this year at Fantastic Fest. Fantastic Fest runs from September 20-27. Red Dawn is set to close the festival.

Red Dawn went into production in 2009, but was shelved due to distributor MGM having financial issues. FilmDistrict eventually picked up the film, which is set to hit theatres on November 23. Check out the trailer and a new image below! Notice Chris Hemsworth? He’s sure blown up since this one was filmed.

From the official press release:

RED DAWN stars CHRIS HEMSWORTH (Thor, The Avengers, Snow White & The Huntsman), JOSH PECK (Drake & Josh, The Wackness), JOSH HUTCHERSON (The Hunger Games), ADRIANNE PALICKI (Friday Night Lights, upcoming GI Joe: Retaliation), ISABEL LUCAS (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Immortals), CONNOR CRUISE (Seven Pounds) and JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN (Watchmen).

In RED DAWN, a city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping fromthe sky – shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and withoutwarning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fightback, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselvesinto a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves theWolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back theirfreedom.  FilmDistrict will release RED DAWN in theaters nationwide on November 21, 2012, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Following the World Premiere, Fantastic Fest will transform the Austin American Legion into a maximum-security prison for the ultimate Red Dawn shindig.  Prisoners will experience mandatory enjoyment from delousing stations as well as free prison tattoos and head-shaves.  Executive chef John Bullington will be doling out wild-game bulgogi, kimchi and piping-hot shots of deer blood while the uniformed detainees enjoy the musical stylings of festival favorite Future Folk.
