I identify as a Christian. It’s very important that I stress this upfront because I do not want this review to sound like I’m bashing Christianity before I write another word. The story of Ted DiBiase’s redemption is a beautiful story and I hope to one day hear it told in a better way.

I identify as a Christian, but I also identify as a storyteller.

Simply put The Price of Fame is a poorly told story, which is a shame because it’s a very good story.

Above everything else, The Price of Fame is a tale about God and Christianity. It doesn’t shy away from this – the problem is that it sacrifices story to stress its message. This is a problem that I see almost any time that I watch a Christian film.

Ted DiBiase was (and will always be) one of the greatest heels in wrestling. The Million Dollar Man was so cruel and pompous that it became extremely easy to despise him (specifically when you were a kid). As an adult seeing the wizard behind the curtain, it’d be pretty much impossible not to love him as well. Few people were better at living the gimmick (for better or worse) and the art of method acting bleeds itself into every moment of DiBiase’s life on or off the camera.

All of this lead to DiBiase living a life full of sin. The sorrow of losing his father when he was 15 (his famous father Iron Mike DiBaise died of a heart attack in the ring) and a sudden wrestling explosion in 1987 lead to a life of drugs, alcohol and sex. All of this while he had a wife and three boys back at home.

The film is less about DiBiase’s wrestling career and more about his family life now that he’s found God and how that change in him extended to many of his friends (including but not limited to George “The Animal” Steele and Shawn Michaels). This is where the problem in the film’s pace occurs.

When there are wrestlers on screen, it’s beautiful and it’s real and it’s touching. Hearing the testimonies of these men are powerful and they set a beautiful tone. Shawn Michael’s story is particularly compelling. This is no surprise as Shawn Michaels is one of the most genuine voices in professional wrestling.

The problem is that these moments of real sincerity are broken by moments with the DiBiase family. It’d be unfair to say the moments feel insincere, because I believe the emotions and stories are genuine, but they feel like re-enactments of moments that already happened. It’s specifically rough with Ted DiBaise Jr. and his younger brother Brett. Ted over-acts his emotions, Brett suddenly changes from anger to forgiveness in a matter of minutes – it all just feels like a bad reality show.

Unfortunately, Ted Jr. is our guide for most of the movie, so these moments are far more frequent than any interview with the wrestlers. There are regular moments where Ted Jr. will sit down with someone and interview them and these moments will be followed with a talking head segment of Ted Jr. summarizing the interview we just saw with no real new information.

This is a documentary about redemption and it reminds us of this every step of the way. This is the ultimate flaw of the storytelling. Whenever it breaks down Ted’s debauchery in the 80’s, it immediately reminds us that he’s a changed man. It robs the documentary of any real pay off.

If I could re-edit this movie, I would tell DiBiase’s story. Linger on the drugs, linger on the back-stage stories, linger on the affairs… make that audience feel that feeling of complete and utter hopelessness and then from there build up the way the God changed and transformed his life.

Instead we end up with a film that wants to preach redemption without ever connecting with its audience in a genuine way. The screening I attended concluded with a 15 minute conversation between Ted DiBaise and Shawn Michaels which only further highlighted what this film could have been. Their conversation was interesting and charming and fun, while still being able to tab into both men’s perspective and feelings on faith.

I did not hate this movie, in fact there are things I very much loved. DiBaise standing at his father’s grave having a late night conversation specifically sticks out in my mind as a truly genuine and powerful moment. The film was simply not the movie that I wanted to see. I wanted a film about the dark side of wrestling and one man’s redemption from all of it. Instead I got a 90 minute sermon wrapped in a family drama that occasionally mentioned wrestling.

If you are a Christian, you will love everything this movie has to say. If you’re an atheist, this movie will not be converting you. If you’re a wrestling fan this film will leave you wanting more.

Maybe I’m just salty because my all time favorite wrestler I.R.S. (DiBaise’s old tag partner) never appears in any form outside of archival footage. Absolute travesty.

When the invitation arrived to attend Robert Rodriguez’s premiere screening of his latest short Sock ‘Em Dead, to say that I jumped at the opportunity would be an understatement—I still need to bring in some painters to patch the hole in my ceiling. I’ve been a fan of Rodriguez’s since discovering him with his film Desperado. I appreciate his rebellious approach to getting his projects made on his terms and turning out great entertainment come hell or high water.

The night finally arrived and I made my way to a Hollywood backstreet above the Walk of Fame to find an intimate crowd gathering off an alley adjacent a hidden parking lot. They were dressed with a rugged glamour and I knew I must’ve found the right spot.

Or maybe not?

The large imposing bouncer at the No Vacancy didn’t have my name on the guest list but it wasn’t any big deal because Andrea from the El Rey Network emerged like a ninja from an arrangement of shrubbery to update the list and get me in the door. Little did I realize at the time that this was only the beginning of my adventures for the evening. Once inside, I went up a series of staircases into a hallway with locked “hotel room” doors. Had I taken a wrong turn? No one was around to guide me and eventually, at the end of the hall, was a door that I found to be unlocked. Inside the room was a “call girl” who asked me to wait for a moment, at which point there was a fevered exchanging of interesting glances before she cleared me to enter—was that the password?—a precise choreography of glares and come-hither stares? She activated a panel that split the bed apart and revealed a staircase hidden in the walls. Excelsior! I descended down into the wonderful reception that the El Rey Network had put together for the evening.

“From Dusk Till Dawn” Cast | www.goldfra.me

The guests were made up of my kind of celebrities and entertainment professionals—many of which were past, present and future colleagues of Robert Rodriguez, as well as the man himself. At the bar, I ordered a mezcal and enjoyed mingling with the other guests. Rodriguez provided the details of how Happy Socks had approached him to make a promotional piece for their company. He liked the idea and agreed but wanted to do more with it, so he waited until production began again on the TV series From Dusk Till Dawn, when he could use the resources that were assembled for the show. He tapped Madison Davenport as the lead but there are a lot of other Rodriguez ensamble favorites that make cameos throughout—Wilmer Valderrama was a hoot and Danny Trejo was perfect.

It’s a quick fast paced short that provides a great behind-the-scenes set up and then gets straight to the action in true Rodriguezian fashion—and to quote the man himself, he shot the whole thing “mariachi style,” his shorthand reference to getting in, getting the shots, and getting it done fast and efficient. To likewise make the review of it fast and efficient, it’s a real kick in the pants and absolutely worth the ride! To say much more, I think would do a disservice to the excitement of the initial experience.

Enjoy!

Chatting with Davenport after the film had screened was a real treat. I think most often, when actors—or anyone—knows they’re being put on the spot, there can be a bit of professional distance that kicks in. However, it was a “first name” sort of moment with Madison as genuine delight lit up her face. The audience reaction was energetically enthusiastic and when I asked her if it was a different experience from seeing it in a dark editing room, she was quick to correct me. “No, this is the first time I’ve gotten to see it finished! It’s so cool. I think people liked it.” I think she was right—a lot.

I got the chance to speak with Rodriguez some more too, with the hopes of getting details on some of his projects that have been simmering for a while such as, BarbarellaMadman and the rights he acquired for Heavy Metal. Unfortunately there are no new details he was willing to divulge at this time—however I took the opportunity to ask if he ever planned to do a feature-length adaptation of his original award winning short that kicked everything off for him as a young director, Bedhead. I was delighted to hear that he actually did have a feature-length script that he has ready to go the moment the timing is right! Meantime, I guess we’ll have to make due with his epic project underway with James Cameron, Alita: Battle Angel. Stoked!

A surprise highlight of the evening was getting to spend some time with actor Ted Raimi and his fiance, the lovely Suzanne Keilly, who is a writer working on Ash vs Evil Dead. Keilly’s tales of the writers’ room were a lot of fun—writers coming up with the craziest stuff they could think of and then following through to make sure the idea made it on camera. Initially, it sounded like Starz (producing and airing the show) may have been a bit hesitant but, after seeing the pilot, they understood what gold they had on their hands and were excited for whatever the writers could dish out! Sounds like a recipe for fans getting some sugar, baby. Of course, I had to ask Raimi and Keilly about whether we would be seeing him on the show. His response was cryptic but I think that we will have something to look forward to. I also couldn’t resist the opportunity to reminisce with him about Drag Me to Hell and (a personal favorite) Legend of the Seeker—his experience on that show sounded very enjoyable, working in New Zealand with Bridget Regan and Craig Horner, both of which he spoke highly of. I was happy to hear that Ted is a fan of Geekscape saying that he’s not just an actor he’s also a lover of genre entertainment himself and appreciates Geekscape’s personal touch approach to keeping geeky fans informed. I’ve heard stories of what a nice guy Ted Raimi is but I had no idea what a genuine pleasure it is have the opportunity to speak with him. There was a lot of agreement about this from the Geekscape staff so, Mr. Raimi, this is your official invitation to join us on the show whenever you have the opportunity. We’re all huge fans and would love to have you!

By the time I had the charmingly quirky layout of No Vacancy down, it was time to head out into the night again. Much as I wanted to stay, I guess they live up to their name and I had to settle for a goodnight wink from the “call girl” guarding the gates to the evening’s revelries.

The marvelously ambitious El Rey Network and innovative Happy Socks really put together a fantastic evening on par with the excellent presentation of the channel’s rebel broadcast. The team-up here with Happy Socks didn’t immediately make sense to me but after receiving a set of Rodriguez’s signature blood and vampire inspired socks from Happy Socks, the pairing made sense—a couple of mavericks from different walks of life joining forces in a way that no one else could come up with, let alone pull off. Sock ‘Em Dead is a wonderfully fun shot of adrenaline that premieres Tuesday, October 20th on HappySocks.com and I absolutely recommend you check it out for a good time!

Lawrence of Arabia I hear, is quite the film. It’s a title that I have not yet had the pleasure to see, despite it being on my list of ‘Stuff I Have To See’ for some time now. This is some pretty cool news, and if I was anywhere near a theatre having a showing, I would be there for sure.

The Blu-Ray release of the film is set to release in November. For this, Sony Pictures Entertainment has taken the original negatives, and meticulously restored them to a beautiful, digital 4K transfer. This is a huge upgrade from any edition that has been seen so far!

But it’s not just on Blu-Ray that you can experience this! For one day only, this Thursday October 4th, Lawrence of Arabia returns to theatres. Tickets and participating locations can be found at www.FathomEvents.com. Over 630 theatres! Not a single one in Canada though, so I suppose I’ll be sitting out on this one!

You should pick up tickets quickly though, the showing is just a couple days away, and tickets are sure to be going fast!

Check out the trailer for the transfer below, and let us know if you’re going!

Last week, MachinimaFlixist and Geekscape grouped up to hold an awesome (and awesomely successful) advanced screening of the upcoming horror Sinister. It was a ton of fun (or so I hear, I’m stuck up here in Canada), and an awesome experience for everyone involved.

Apologies to those who wanted to go but couldn’t! The screening turned out far more successful than we could have imagined: as we let you know previously, we actually had to ask for a bigger venue as we sold out the original so fast.

If you missed the screening, you’ll get a shot to see Sinister when it releases on October 12th. The film is said to be one of the scariest of the year, and currently holds 100% on RottenTomatoes. I know I’ll be lining up!

We managed to grab a few photo’s at the screening (just a few, in all our excitement we forgot that our phones also double as cameras). Also take a look at the exclusive poster that was created for the screening!

Folks lining up long before the film.
Huge lineup! A little bit closer now!
Sinister‘s director Scott Derrickson was there! Here he signs posters before the show.

Thanks again to all who made the screening such a success!

We hope you’re looking forward to Sinister as much as we are!

The movie is being heralded as one of the scariest of the year, and from the look of this new red band trailer, Sinister certainly looks like it could be!

Sinister hits theatres on October 12th. It currently holds a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and from everything I’ve heard, it doesn’t seem like that will fall anytime soon!

Check out the trailer below, and read on further for some exciting news!

You’ve surely seen the posts these past few weeks about the special early showing of the film coming from MachinimaFlixist and Geekscape. The showing sold out very quickly, but we were able to charm our way into a larger venue. We hope you got your tickets however, as this larger venue is now 100% SOLD OUT!

Thanks for making the event such a success! It’s going to be awesome! We’ll see all of you on the 24th!

Summit Entertainment today released a creepy new poster for their upcoming horror Sinister.  The film is being called one of the scariest titles of the year, and from the look of the trailers so far, it certainly looks like it could be!

The official release date of the film has also fallen back slightly. Slated originally for October 5th, it will now hit on October 12th instead.

In LA and want to see it even earlier? We let you know a few weeks back MachinimaFlixist and Geekscape are hosting a screening of the film on September 24th. The screening sold out quickly, but we were lucky enough to arrange for a larger venue! At the time of this writing, 51 tickets are left, but they’re moving fast!

Scott Derricksonthe director of the film, and producer Jason Blum will be there, and will be having a Q&A after the show!
