The world is a weird place right now.

My office has transitioned to working from home, and I don’t know when I’ll see my coworkers again.

My partner is a registered nurse, and I’m both so grateful for the work that she’s doing… and kind of scared to be near her.

I just keep thinking back to just a few weeks ago — checking out the Sonic The Hedgehog movie, walking around a giant mall, eating BBQ with a group of friends.

I keep thinking back to just a few weeks ago when everything felt mostly normal… and then a film like this comes along to remind me just how hard some people have to fight to feel any semblance of normal at all.

Geekscape pal, I Am Santa Claus, and The Bill Murray Stories director Tommy Avallone is back with Waldo on Weed, a documentary that Variety noted will “resonate with audiences no matter their views on marijuana” after its Tribeca premiere last year.

Here’s the synopsis for Waldo On Weed:

When their son Waldo was just 6 months old, his parents Brian and Danielle noticed that he’d been having trouble with his vision. Like any good parents, they wanted to protect their son, so they went to a number of doctors, only to receive the devastating diagnosis that Waldo had cancer. They followed the doctors’ orders and began chemotherapy on their infant. The side effects of the chemo caused Waldo to become so sick that they began a desperate search for alternative therapies, and one, worked like a charm. Combining a mix of traditional interviews with found-footage, the film features conversations with the family, the friends that helped them along the way, and many experts in the field, including doctors, lawmakers, and more. The results are captured in a story that includes footage of the family as they move their lives from Philadelphia to build a new home out west. Brian’s “Dad Cam” puts you in the room for all the highs and lows of a family going through tragedy, and triumph.

It’s hard to watch the trailer without tearing up, feeling sad, and feeling hopeful all at the same time:

Waldo on Weed is available on iTunes and Amazon as of today, and as movie theatres and seemingly life itself continues to shut down around me, this is absolutely one of the first films on my ‘must watch’ list.

Our beloved friend, documentary filmmaker Tommy Avallone is back on the show to talk about his latest film ‘The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned From A Mythical Man’! This one documents the numerous Bill Murray sightings across the country, from Bill showing up at a frat party to do dishes to taking part in a couple’s engagement photo shoot, and tries ot make sense of it all! We’ve seen the movie and we love it… so how did it come together? What is it about Bill Murray that we find so captivating? How hard was it to put this movie together? What were some of the most ridiculous ‘urban legends’ surrounding Bill Murray and Bill Murray sightings? What’s Tommy working on next? There’s tons to digest here, especially for indie filmmakers, so enjoy!

90% of my Fantastic Fest experience was seeing movies for interviews, but there was one film I was going to see regardless of if I had an interview or not. That was the documentary I Used To Be Normal: A Boyband Fangirl Story.

I love pop music, I always have. I’ve always had a secret soft spot in my heart for boy-bands. I Used to Be Normal follows four women of four distinctly different experiences with Boy Bands. There’s the 16 year old One Direction fan, the writer who attended the Backstreet Boys Cruise, the elderly woman obsessed with The Beatles and a mid-30s woman with an obsession with Take That.

In the same way that Won’t You Be My Neighbor did earlier this year, I Used to Be Normal just overwhelms you with good vibes. You will be laughing with (never at) these subjects, you’ll be crying about their stories of the dark times when pop music saved their lives and you will not contain yourself when they play some of your favorite songs. Everyone sitting around me sang along with each song that played throughout the film.

In a world were a documentary about Mr. Rogers didn’t come out, this would be my favorite documentary of the year. It’s the feel-good experience you didn’t know you needed.

Keep your eyes peeled for when I Used To Be Normal plays a festival near you.

Over the last few years there’s been an overabundance of Bill Murray Stories taking over the internet. They range from flagging down motorcyclists for car assistance to wedding crashing and all things in-between. Tommy Avallone (friend of Geekscape and director of I Am Santa Claus) has announced his next project titled The Bill Murray Stories: Life Lessons Learned From A Mythical Man.

I was lucky enough to see some footage when Tommy was on an upcoming episode of my podcast Playing with Squirrels: A Boy Meets World Fancast (debuting Monday, subscribe on iTunes). What I saw looked great but the movie is far from complete. Tommy and Double Windsor Films need your help!

Currently they are holding open submissions for your Bill Murray Story. Has Bill Murray stole your french fries? Well they want to hear about it. The open submissions are being accepted up until October 7th, so if you’ve been hanging on to a great Bill Murray Story and think it’s time the world heard it contact Tommy and the rest of the Double Windsor team at mystory@doublewindsorfilms.com

For more information on the project check out the official website at http://www.thebillmurraystories.com

Briefly: I’d heard a little bit about the infamous ‘Slenderman Stabbing’, but I had no idea until today that HBO was releasing a documentary about it.

The documentary, which is set to premiere on January 23rd, tells the tale of the 12-year old Wisconsin girl who was stabbed by two of her classmates, who later told authorities that they did it to appease the Slenderman.

Scary shit, right?

The case sounds absolutely terrifying, and the documentary looks to include police footage, possible re-enactments, and much more. Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

We first met filmmaker and comic book fan Michael Valentine several years ago at WonderCon when he told us about his film ‘Comix: Beyond The Comic Book Pages‘! We were excited for him to finish the documentary on the comic book industry so that we could see it for ourselves… and now he has! We talk to Michael on this latest Geekscape about his reasons for making the film, the challenges he faced and what it was like interviewing comic book legends like Stan Lee, Neal Adams and Frank Miller! If you’re a comic book fan, this episode (and Michael’s movie) is just for you!

Briefly: Wizards of the Coast today revealed today revealed that its upcoming documentary, Enter The Battlefield – Life on the Magic: The Gathering Pro Tour will arrive on both Netflix and YouTube on April 26th.

The feature-length documentary follows “the stories of seven Magic players across a season: Reid Duke, Owen Turtenwald, William Jensen, Shahar Shenhar, Patrick Chapin, Melissa DeTora, and Chris Pikula. While their goal for every game is to defeat their opponent, their life on the Pro Tour is about personal goals. More than anyone, they compete with themselves.”

I’ve played Magic on and off for about 15 years at this point (that switch has sadly been in the off state for the past few years), and a look into the lives of the game’s very best players sounds incredibly interesting. You can take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know if you plan to watch!

Magic: The Gathering players, is now a good time to jump back into the game? Let me know in the comments below!

I love this episode! Filmmakers Corey Landis and Roger Lay Jr. grew up, like many of us, with the iconic 80s cartoon and action figure ‘He-Man’! This was our childhood! But then, not only did we grow up… but He-Man kind of disappeared from the cultural consciousness, replaced by Transformers, GI Joe and Ninja Turtles! What was the story behind He-Man anyways? He seemed to be the first of all of these cartoon/toy powerhouses. Well, Roger and Corey’s documentary ‘The Toy Masters’ explores all of those questions and more! It’s a great film and we have both of them on the show this week to talk about all things Masters of the Universe! Enjoy!

Briefly: I hadn’t heard of Back in Time until today, and after watching its amazing trailer, it’s now easily one of my anticipated films.

What a perfect release date, too: the film will hit select theatres and VOD on October 21st, 2015. This is, of course, the actual date that Marty McFly travelled to in Back to the Future Part II.

The film is, of course, a documentary about Back to the Future, and it features new interviews with Robert Zemeckis, Bob Gale, Steven Spielberg, Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, and others, and based on this just released three minute trailer, they look to have some amazing insights.

Here’s the official synopsis:

In ‘Back in Time,’ cast, crew, and fans explore the classic time-travel trilogy’s resonance throughout pop culture. As the project evolved it took them from the joyous nostalgia at a massive London fan event to the living rooms of Michael J. Fox, Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg, Bob Gale, Lea Thompson and Christopher Lloyd as well as Huey Lewis, James Tolkan (“Mr. Strickland”) Claudia Wells (“Jennifer Parker”) and more. Nothing is overlooked as they explore everything from Eric Stoltz’s casting to the invention of the hoverboard. Travelling throughout the world and leaving no stone unturned brings unparalleled behind-the-scenes access to the “BTTF” lexicon.

Now take a look at the trailer below, and let us know how much you’re now looking forward to this film.

At the end of last year we told you all about the Kickstarter for the documentary COMIX: Beyond The Comic Book Pages. We now have some amazing news for you, our Geekscape fans!

COMIX: Beyond the Comic Book Pages is an exciting new feature film documentary about the world of comic books told through the thoughts and images of the creators, artists, writers, collectors, store owners, independent publishers, and especially the passionate fans who have made it the phenomenon that it is today.

COMIX includes exclusive one-on-one interviews with icons from the comic book industry, like Stan Lee (Spiderman, X-Men, Fantastic Four), Frank Miller (Sin City, 300), Neal Adams (Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern/Green Arrow), Mark Waid (Kingdom Come, Superman, Justice League of America), Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Productions (Hellboy, Sin City, Goon, and Concrete), Marc Silvestri of Image Comics and Top Cow Productions (Tomb Raider, Hunter Killer, Witchblade), and Todd McFarlane (Spawn). Briefly: We’re still recovering from a totally incredible New York Comic-Con (have you seen our Constantine interview?), and were  just fleshing out our plans for Comikaze in a couple of weeks (dat guest list) when we had to take a break to check out this fantastic new Comic Book documentary.

It’s called ‘Comic Book Artists: Next Generation’, and the AT&T U-Verse documentary just premiered earlier today. If you’re an AT&T subscriber, you can check it out on channels 300 & 1300HD, but if not (or you don’t want to watch it at a scheduled time) you can watch the doc in its entirety at this link.

In a small loft in Toronto, a group of 10 gifted comic book artists are crafting the next generation of superhero tales featuring Spider-Man, New Warriors, The Flash, Batman, and other classic characters. In this AT&T U-verse Buzz documentary, we get a behind-the-scenes peek at the life of modern-day comic book artists, featuring award-winning creators Ramon K. Perez (The Amazing Spider-Man, Wolverine and the X-Men), Marcus To (New Warriors, Cyborg 009) and Francis Manapul (Detective Comics, The Flash). As each of these artists build their careers and juggle their personal life with an all-consuming artistic life, industry legends Stan Lee and Jim Lee share their advice and perspective on their own successes.

The documentary holds some fantastic clips from Stan Lee, Jim Lee, and everyone else involved, and it gives some absolutely incredible insight to the life of these amazing artists. Definitely, definitely, definitely give the doc a watch, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Dinosaur 13

Produced, Directed, Edited by Todd Miller
Director of Photography: Thomas Petersen
Music Composer: Matt Morton

Little known subject of paleontology stars in this awesome documentary about scientists, the feds and 10 tons of T-Rex.

It is clear why Lionsgate and CNN Films acquired the North American rights to this lovely film directed and produced by Todd Miller, who will quickly become an audience favorite.  Early on in the film you hear a paleontologist describe how being in the field gives one a sense of who were are and how we fit into the scheme of things.  They can look up at the stars the light of which was emitted billions of years ago while finding fossils from billions of years ago and feel the sheer grandeur of nature.  It is clear that the director also felt that this subject matter has put things in perspective for him.  The film truly makes paleontology sexy. A big star is Dinosaur 13 – at the time the thirteenth T-Rex ever discovered and to date the most complete.  If you didn’t find fossils cool beforehand – you certainly will now.  The story is set in beautiful South Dakota – 65 million years ago the home of many dinosaurs.  The T-Rex dig takes a grueling 17 days, and the separation of the skull from the pelvis takes a long two years of meticulous work.  A most fascinating look into something so few of us know anything about.

That being said the story is not at all straightforward and not all feel-good.  Being made an example by the Federal Government the team of scientists from the Black Hills Institute becomes subject of the largest Federal investigation in history.  While this story was in the news throughout the 90’s, I venture to guess that very few of us are really familiar with it.  Heavy on the perspective of the scientists, the film does manage to show a bit of the other side.  But still leaves us with gaping questions regarding exactly why things happened the way they did.  One thing for certain: the events of the grueling court battles of the 90’s have come to define all of the U.S. fossil research today.

Full of original footage from the discovery and the events following, the documentary beautifully weaves in interviews and new footage, keeping the audience engaged throughout.  Miller edits the story in just the right way to keep it moving and incorporates beautiful new shots to give the film a cinematic feel.  It’s to his credit that this potentially long and complex story that could have easily lost the viewer, instead stays on top of its message and hits every point it strives to make.   Miller tells an emotional story but carefully balances facts with raw emotion, making the audience engrossed and invested in the tale and its outcome.  Lovely music by Matt Morton is fitting and aids in the successful narration of this documentary.

One thing for certain: while truly an up and down roller coaster of a story, no one can ever take away from these talented scientists the sheer joy of discovery they felt at the time their work on Dinosaur 13 began and this writer hopes that the film brings about the closure they so deserve.

Final Score: 4 out of 5

This is a pretty incredible story, and like most folks, it’s one I’ve never even heard of.

According to the Kickstarter campaign, “The Sultana disaster is one of the most horrific events in U.S. history and yet few are aware that it even occurred.  A Mississippi steamboat, the Sultana, exploded just north of Memphis, Tennessee in the early morning hours of April 27, 1865 killing over 1,800 souls.  The boat was overloaded with over 2,300 Union soldiers, newly released POW’s on their way back home after surviving the horrors of Civil War prison camps. This accident wasn’t only tragic because POW’s died on the way home; it’s not just tragic because greed-driven men squeezed well over 2,000 individuals onto a vessel licensed to carry 367 passengers; the Sultana disaster is tragic because it was covered up and, ultimately, forgotten. Greed, drama, and humanity make the Sultana a story to remember. Please help us remember the Sultana and raise this story from the depths of the Mississippi and into the hearts of people everywhere.”

This sounds absolutely insane to me. The boat should have only carried 367 people, but was loaded to over 2300. What.

Less than 2% of Americans have ever heard of the country’s greatest maritime disaster, and that’s something that Mark Marshall wants to change. He’s set out (along with Sean Astin, Jim Michaels, Matthew Egan, Leah Cevoli, Jeff Hoopingarner, Mark Alan Ray, and more) to tell the tale of the ill-fated ship, and “honor the victims of the Sultana by reaching as many people as possible with their story. This production will serve as a beacon of hope to establish the Sultana story in American history books across the nation. Our mission is to assist the Sultana Movement in establishing this event among the great tragedies of The Civil War. These were common men who were tested in battle, suffered in Confederate prison camps and survived, only to die within sight of home. They deserve to be remembered and honored by the nation they served.”

The campaign is making some great progress, and is currently sitting at $29, 740 of its $75, 000 goal. With 14 days left to raise funds, things our looking positive, but the team needs our help if the Sultana story is to be told. There are some fantastic rewards up for grabs, including wristbands, downloads, DVDs, Blu-Rays, shirts, autographs, producer credits, and much more.

You can take a look at the video for the Kickstarter campaign below, and head here to back the project!

We here at Geekscape are no strangers to MLP and Bronies (you should see my Rarity cosplay), so when we saw the trailer for the upcoming documentary on the best fandom out there we just had to share it.

I am always down for people intelligently explaining our passion for this show, and it looks like Brent Hodge as put together a fantastic film.

A Brony Tale is premiering at the Tribeca Film Festival April 26th. It can also be seen at the DOXA Film Festival on May 11th!

The people at Valve certainly love what they do, so much so that they’ve created this intense Documentary that follows eSport Professionals on their road to the biggest video game tournament ever. Check out the trailer for “Free to Play” below!

FREE TO PLAY is a feature-length documentary that follows three professional gamers from around the world as they compete for a million dollar prize in the first Dota 2 International Tournament. In recent years, E Sports has surged in popularity to become one of the most widely-practiced forms of competitive sport today. A million dollar tournament changed the landscape of the gaming world and for those elite players at the top of their craft, nothing would ever be the same again. Produced by Valve, the film documents the challenges and sacrifices required of players to compete at the highest level.

Dramatic music? Check. Human element? Check. Topic geeks love? Check.

Free to Play looks like it will hit all the points of a great documentary. I am very excited to see this when it comes out on March 19th. You can get it FOR FREE on Steam. There will also be a Dota 2 item pack available for purchase, with contributions going to people featured in the film.

For more info be sure to check out the official website.

We are HUGE fans of My Little Pony here at Geekscape. Personally myself probably the biggest on the site. I dressed up as Rarity (the male version) at Comic Con this year. Seriously.

Outside the Geek world, people don’t seem to know about or understand the male fans of the show. Bronies are an odd, out of place WTF worthy group of fans that seem to get a bad wrap.  Well if you’re not up to speed or want to share in the excitement with your friends check out this trailer for the upcoming TV debut of the Kickstarter sensation Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony.

From the Press Release:

Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony sheds light on the unconventional adult fandom of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.  The documentary features John de Lancie and follows several Bronies as they grapple with their misunderstood love for My Little Pony while preparing for the annual convention, BronyCon. This insight into the world of super fandom brings new meaning to masculinity and bravery …  with the help of cartoon horses. Watch when Logo TV’s WHAT!? Documentaries presents Bronies on Monday, October 14 at 10/9c!

This looks pretty damn interesting.  As a fan of the show I get my fair share of ball busting, but haven’t run into stuff like getting my car smashed! I am excited to see what a nice 1st person perspective.

So if you didn’t get to see it when during the Kickstarter then you’re in luck! Be sure to check out Logo TV October 14th!

Don’t know if you have Logo TV? They have a nice handy Channel guide right here! If I get it in podunk Alaska, then you should too!

50 episodes! Who would have guessed this would happen. I’m extremely excited to still be doing this show after all this time. To celebrate I brought back my friend (and first guest) Tommy Avallone who wrote/directed Community College, Produced Miss December and Mancation and is currently wrapping up his newest project I Am Santa Clause. He’s a great guest and friend I can’t wait to see the final product (and also to purchase his movies and stop being a shitty friend)

The intro music contains the song One After the Other from Pterofractyl’s album The Missing Animal.

It’s so bad!

Mattel’s Power Glove for the Nintendo Entertainment System first released in 1989. Sadly, it’s a product that I never got to experience, as its mediocrity sent it into obscurity long before I even knew what a video game was (I was born in 1990 after all).

Soon, I’ll be able to learn everything about the Power Glove, that I never knew I wanted to. The Power of Glove is a feature length documentary that chronicles the conception, creation, and release of the product. The documentary features interviews with a plethora of individuals that had a hand in creating the Power Glove, as well as (of course), plenty of folks who fell for the gimmick (or joined the revolution, depending on who you ask).

The first trailer for The Power of Glove is now online, and the film looks like an absolute must watch. Take a look at the preview below, and let us know if you’ll be checking it out! The film is still without a release date, but we’ll be sure to update you as soon as one is announced.

Cosplay is a huge part of the geek community, and director Andrew Bush displays some of the better DC Universe cosplay in his new short film Cape & Cowl. From the official description:

Cape & Cowl is a genre-bending documentary short exploring the world of “cosplay,” or costume play. Abby Polakow, a costume designer, creates costumes for those wanting to take their appreciation of comic books, character design, and superheroes to a new level. The “cosplayers” also reveal how wearing costumes affects them on a more personal level.”

Another reason to check this film out is that it features Geekscapist Molly Mahan as Black Canary! So what are you waiting for? Check out the video below.

More info can be found here: https://www.facebook.com/capeandcowl

If you’ve been under a digital rock for the past year, adventure game legend Tim Schafer, started a Kickstarter to build an old school point and click adventure game. Cutting out the publisher and going straight to the fans. If you check it out, Double Fine was able to raise over $3 MILLION!

Well today we got ourselves and official website and pre-order information! The site went live today. We got a nice picture and the broad description of the game. Take a read!

Broken Age is a point-and-click adventure telling the stories of a young boy and girl leading parallel lives. The girl has been chosen by her village to be sacrificed to a terrible monster–but she decides to fight back. Meanwhile, a boy on a spaceship is living a solitary life under the care of a motherly computer, but he wants to break free to lead adventures and do good in the world. Adventures ensue.

Broken Age development began when we asked our community if they would help us create a classic-style adventure game without needing to rely on traditional publishers. It turns out they did.

And ever since day one, 2 Player Productions has been recording the whole process in an ongoing series of in-depth episodes documenting the creation of a game. By becoming a backer, you can follow the game’s development as it progresses!

I’m not a huge adventure game fan, sans Walking Dead, but I respect Tim Schafer and all the work he has done. I am very excited to see what turns up when this game comes out!

There is no official release date yet, but if you get the backer status pre-order you get access to the forums and the 2 Player Productions documentary, and from what I’ve heard it is TOTALLY worth the extra dollars.

After being teased, and teased, and teased, and delayed, and delayed, we finally are about to witness the newest season of the geekiest car show on television! Top Gear Series 19 debuts January 27th! Check out the trailer below!

Just seeing those clips has got my all sorts of excited! No official word yet on the USA release schedule, but BBCA has been doing pretty good with Doctor Who releases, and I am sure that if you are an intrepid Top Gear fan you know how to watch the latest episodes!

A synopsis of the first episode was compiled on Wikipedia:

Jeremy attempts to build a car that’s even smaller than the Peel P50.  James road tests the new 205mph Bentley Continental GT Speed by taking it out on a British Rally stage.  Richard is out on the test track in the new Pagani Huayra.

My favorite British show is back baby!

On an October Geekscapepod, Jonathan mentioned a little documentary called The American Scream. Produced and directed by Michael Stephenson (Best Worst Movie), the film follows three Halloween obsessed families on a journey to create a wonderful haunted house experience.

Jonathan was a fan of the film, and now you can be too! Magic Stone productions has just announced that The American Scream is now available on Blu-Ray/DVD, exclusively here!

The Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack is available for just $17.99, and would make a wonderful gift for any Halloween fan on your list! Check out the trailer below, and if you’re a fan of the film, let us know what you thought of it!

Well, this is exciting. After months of work, Geekscape, along with our partners Exhibit A Pictures and Red Letter Media, are proud to show you the first trailer for our upcoming feature film ‘Doc of the Dead‘, the world’s first and only zombie pop culture documentary. Our goal is to explore our collected fascination (and obsession) with zombies while maybe answering the question “… but could zombies really happen?”

Our work on the film wouldn’t be possible without the help of everyone you saw in the clip above, including Geekscape friends Simon Pegg, Matt Mogk and George Romero. And completing the film won’t be possible without your help, Geekscapists! Today, Geekscape, Exhibit A Pictures and Red Letter Media are launching our very first Kickstarter ever, in pursuit of funding for the film. Everything that you just saw has been paid for out of pocket, and while it’s enough to get the movie started, we’ll need the collected efforts of all Geekscapists to get the film completed!

Please, share our Kickstarter page with your friends, family and complete strangers. If they have a pulse… chances are they are zombie fans. And if they don’t have a pulse, they’re probably zombies (so share it with them too)! We have some really great incentives lined up for anyone who can donate at any level, and most of them give you the completed film. One of them includes a limited edition print of our poster, compliments of ‘The Walking Dead’ artist Charlie Adlard, who premiered it with us at our San Diego Comic Con booth this past summer!

We started Geekscape with a podcast, together grew it into a community and have been going strong for almost six years now. If you’ve been with us the entire time or just for the length of this article, this is your chance to be a part of the next phase of Geekscape! Please, help us bring ‘Doc of the Dead‘ to life!
