Briefly: As mixed as reception was for Sony’s adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming’s acclaimed comic series Powers was, the series was still beyond popular enough to receive a second season order.

The first season is available in full to Playstation Plus subscribers, and Sony’s VP of Platforms Marketing John Koller states that “The reception to ‘Powers’ has been incredible and we are thrilled to have successfully launched a platform for original content with the PlayStation gamer in mind. We believe original content will continue to be a key pillar as we broaden the value proposition for PlayStation Plus, and we’re excited for what’s to come with season two of ‘Powers.’”

Bendis adds that  “We are so grateful to the PlayStation nation and fans of Powers for supporting us and making the second season a reality. I speak for the entire cast & crew when I say that we are really excited about season two and the opportunity to tell the story of the biggest case in Powers history.”

Season two of Powers is without a solid debut date at this point, but in any case, it’s coming in 2016. Take a look at the first look trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

In about three weeks will be the premiere of the PlayStation-exclusive series, Powers. Man, a PlayStation TV series. What a time to be alive.

I admit I’m not very familiar with the original graphic novel from Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, but just from this sneak peek it has my attention.

What I’m dwelling on is that it’s a PlayStation series. I remember reading in Console Wars how Sega wanted their Genesis to be an online, multi-media hub of sorts but was handcuffed by its time. Now, a video game console can create a compelling television series and no one thinks it’s that weird. The doors are opening, the pillars are falling and it’s so exciting to me.

Powers premieres March 10 on the PlayStation Store. The first three episodes will be available, followed by a new episode weekly.

Will you be watching Powers?

Briefly: We’ve been waiting patiently since its reveal in September, and today we finally learned just when we’ll be able to check out Sony’s adaptation of Powers.

Powers is “follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward), who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with extraordinary abilities, referred to as “Powers.” Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals? Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the only people brave enough to go up against the overpaid, commercialized, superhumans who glide through the sky imposing their power over the crowds below who both worship and fear them.”

It’s based on the Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming series which I’ve heard nothing but good things about but haven’t actually read (I’ll give the ‘it’s on the list’ excuse), but I’ll watch anything with the fantastic Sharlto Copley in it, and here he plays one of our main characters, Christian Walker.

Sony revealed today (via the official Playstation blog) that the series will premiere its first three episodes on March 10th, with an additional episode coming every Tuesday until it closes its 10-episode first season. The pilot will be available to all (at least US, Sony hasn’t clarified international) PSN users for free, while Playstation Plus members will be able to watch the entire season.

Are you looking forward to the adaptation? What do you think of Playstation getting into original content? Sound out below!

Briefly: Back in September Sony announced that the first footage from this Winter’s Powers would debut at New York Comic-Con. Well, NYCC has arrived, and so has this bad-ass (and language heavy) footage.

I’ve not read the Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming series (I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, so I’ll give the ‘it’s on the list’ excuse), but I’ll watch anything with the fantastic Sharlto Copley in it, and here he plays one of our main characters, Christian Walker.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be checking out Powers when it premieres later this year. As for watching the show, Sony says that “PlayStation platform owners will be able to download/stream individual episodes of POWERS.  Members of PlayStation Plus, the premium gaming membership, will be able to view the entire POWERS series for free and obtain exclusive behind-the-scenes footage.   Episode 1 of POWERS will be made free for everyone, regardless if they own a PlayStation or not.” Let’s just hope that expands beyond the United States.

Powers, an edgy dramatic series from Sony Pictures Television and inspired by the graphic novel series of the same name, follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward), who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with extraordinary abilities, referred to as “Powers.” Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? What if all that power was just one more excuse for mischief, mayhem, murder, and endorsement deals? Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the only people brave enough to go up against the overpaid, commercialized, superhumans who glide through the sky imposing their power over the crowds below who both worship and fear them.

Briefly: Following the latest casting announcement back in August, our first official look at Powers last week, Sony has debuted four new stills from the anticipated series, as well as some news as to when we’ll get to see more.

The series is set to premiere its first episode on Sony’s own Playstation Network this December… which is a weird but intriguing idea (and I probably won’t get it because I’m in Canada), and although I’m not overly familiar with the comic book series myself, it’s got a pretty stellar creative team coming together, so I’m definitely looking forward to checking it out.

Here’s the official synopsis. I’m sure glad that it’s edgy and dramatic (because in a post TDK world what else is there):

Powers, an edgy dramatic series from Sony Pictures Television and inspired by the graphic novel series of the same name, follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker (Sharlto Copley) and Deena Pilgrim (Susan Heyward), who are assigned to investigate cases involving people with extraordinary abilities, referred to as “Powers.” Set amidst today’s paparazzi culture, Powers asks the questions, what if the world was full of superheroes who aren’t actually heroic at all? Enter the men and women of the Powers Division, the only people brave enough to go up against the overpaid, commercialized, superhumans who glide through the sky imposing their power over the crowds below who both worship and fear them.

Honestly, from that synopsis alone, it sounds like a bad-ass story, and I may have to check out the comic before the show ever has a chance to premiere.

You can take a look at the four new images below, and head further south for all of the New York Comic-Con info. Are you looking forward to the series?

“From the minute he stepped onto the set Sharlto has invested every part of himself into this role. He adds layers and layers into Christian Walker. He is doing everything I hoped he would do, which is make the television version of this character unique and exciting,” said Bendis. “And Susan, my god! From her very first audition she has embodied the character of Deena Pilgrim. I think people are going to be completely sucked in by both of their performances and unique perspectives on this world that Charlie Huston has built.”

“No matter how many guns or super powers you throw into a TV show, no one is going to watch if they don’t give a damn about your main characters. Sharlto and Susan are my secret weapons, my super powers; dynamic talents that viewers will definitely give a damn about,” adds showrunner and writer, Charlie Huston.

During the “POWERS: Bringing the Graphic Novels to Life Exclusively on PlayStation” panel, fans will jump into the world of POWERS as the team shares their journey turning the beloved graphic novels into a live-action drama series for PlayStation. The award-winning graphic novels, written by Bendis and illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming, have received critical-acclaim earning the Eisner Award for Best New Series in 2001. Bendis also won the Best Writer Eisner Award in 2002 and 2003. Powers the series is produced by Jinxworld and Circle of Confusion in association with Sony Pictures Television. Brian Michael Bendis, Charlie Huston, Remi Aubuchon, Michael Avon Oeming, and David Engel serve as executive producers.

Briefly: Following the latest casting announcement back in August, Sony (via USAToday) has given us our first official look at Powers in a still of stars Sharlto Copley’s Christian Walker and Susan Heyward’s Deena Pilgrim.

Deadline states that “Powers is set in a world full of people with superhuman abilities and where all of those powers are just another catalyst for mayhem and murder. It follows the lives of two homicide detectives, Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who are assigned to protect humans like us and investigate cases involving people with superhuman abilities, referred to as Powers who glide through the sky on lightning bolts and fire and who clash above cities in epic battle, oblivious to the mortals below.”

Briefly: Sony dedicated an exorbitant amount of time to the announcement of Powers at their E3 Press Conference, and the series has just found its first director.

30 Days of Night, and more recently Breaking Bad and Hannibal director David Slade has signed on to helm the first two episodes of the anticipated series. Those scripts come from The Smoking Gun Presents: World’s Dumbest writer Charlie Huston.

Deadline states that “Powers is set in a world full of people with superhuman abilities and where all of those powers are just another catalyst for mayhem and murder. Let’s get some reviews going! I watch “Ruby Sparks” and say ‘forget writing up a girl… let’s write up a different ending’! X-Men First Class sequel gets a fantastic name! Geekscape casts the Fantastic Four reboot for Fox! FX refuses to give up on “Powers”! I definitely give up on the 3DS title “Planet Crashers” but it leads me back into the arms of the original Zelda! Oh sweet, sweet adventurous, exploring original Zelda arms!

Well it looks like all hope in seeing a TV-version of the Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming comic-series Powers is not lost. Variety is reporting that FX hasn’t pulled the plug just yet. The series has been in development hell for quite sometime now.

A pilot was shot last year but rejected by FX topper John Landgraf, who asked scribe Charles “Chick” Eglee for a rewrite. The network had plans to do a reshoot of the pilot — with a completely new cast — but those plans have not gone forward and there is no immediate start date to put it back in front of the camera.

Jason Patric and Lucy Punch, who co-stars in the new Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate,” were in the original cast. Others in the ensemble were Charles S. Dutton, Titus Welliver and Carly Foulkes.

For those not familiar with the series, it follows homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who investigate crimes  involving “powers” (people with superpowers). The series began in 2000 under Image comics before shifting to Marvel’s Icon imprint in 2004.

I’m sad to see the Christian Walker part that Jason Patric was set to play being recast. I’m a fan of Patric and would love to see him in more stuff.  I’m okay with Lucy Punch’s role being recast as I have never been a big fan of hers. If you’re not familiar her name you’ve probably seen her before in movies like Bad Teacher and Dinner For SchmucksHopefully the powers that be (no pun intended) can get some quality actors for the parts now that they are recasting.

I’ll be keeping a look out for updates as they come out so be sure to check back.

Publicity shot of Jason Patric as Christian Walker from the ill-fated pilot

UPDATE: It appears that FX President John Landgraf has confirmed that this is happening and they have ordered four episodes! Earlier this week Bendis tweeted that he had read a script for a third episode of the show and Landgraf told IGN:

“Yeah. Brian has the benefit of reading scripts that I haven’t read! But what we ended up doing is hiring Chic Eglee, who had done the work on the pilot we shot. Not only to rewrite the pilot that we had shot, but to do three more episodes and put together a writing staff. So I think Brian has now read those scripts. I haven’t seen them yet. So we are going to end up having four scripts for Powers. And if we elect to move forward, yeah, I think we will just go back and reshoot the pilot from scratch, with a new cast in all probability.” So, does that mean we won’t see Jason Patric and Lucy Punch as Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim? “I think there’s a possibility that some of the original cast members might return. Jason Patric certainly wants to look at the material and wants to render an opinion about whether he still wants to be involved in the project. But it’s just as likely, I think, that we’d just start from scratch and reshoot it.”

It looks as if the show really is moving forward.
