Empire Online has revealed the poster for the the upcoming Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg written film ‘The World’s End’, which Wright is directing and Pegg is starring in. The film is the 3rd in the unofficial Wright/Pegg trilogy that began with Shaun of the Dead and continued with Hot Fuzz.

As Empire describes it (really, you should be reading Empire all the time):

The plot of the final part of Pegg (stars, writes) and Edgar Wright’s (writes, directs) Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy finds five childhood friends reuniting after 20 years because one of them – Pegg’s 40 year-old Gary King, who refuses to grow up – is trying to drag his less-than-enthusiastic mates – Nick Frost, Paddy Considine and the recently-confirmed Eddie Marsan and Martin Freeman – on a recreation of an epic 12-venue pub crawl in their home town, which culminated at a boozer called The World’s End. Somewhat aptly, because this time it seems that the world may actually be ending.

And despite what the Mayans tell us, you’ll have to wait until August 14, 2013 for The World’s End.

This is a pretty cool Geekscape exclusive. My friend and fellow filmmaker Andrzej Rattinger celebrated his birthday a few days ago and our friend Eugene Ramos tipped me off that one of the biggest surprises of the night was this custom made Indiana Jones birthday cake!

Quinton Bailey (yet another friend from our film school days) of Fluff N Stuff, designed the cake based on one of Andy’s (and pretty much everyone else’s) favorite films. Looking at these pictures, I wish I had been there myself to see it in all of its deliciously detailed glory… and because I know that no one saved a slice for me.

Here it is, moments before it was consumed by the attendees!

Pretty awesome? New York residents can order their own geek-themed birthday cakes from our friend Quinton Bailey at Fluff N Stuff (and you can find them on Facebook as well)!

Photos 1, 8 and 9 by Haydur Agha. All others taken by Andy himself (Happy Birthday, buddy)!

AvX has come to a close and Uncanny Avenger’s has ushered in the beginnings of Marvel Now! So… what do we think? Was AvX a giant event worth experiencing? Does Scott Summers deserve to be public enemy number one? How will Marvel Now integrate the Avengers and X-Men teams and lead to a better Marvel Universe? Enthusiast and expert Ian Kerner is on the podcast to help me figure it all out!

How fit are you? I start this episode trying to find out! Then I tell you how good or just silly ‘Taken 2’ is! Plus, is AvX really over? Where does it go from here? What Batman comics should I read if I’m scared of crossovers? Why Jeff Lemire’s ‘The Underwater Welder’ is definitely something you should pick up! Does the New Super Mario Bros 2 ‘DLC’ add anything and is ‘Resident Evil 6’ deserving of all the hate?

I sit down with director Ciaran Foy to talk about his psychological thriller ‘Citadel’ and its autobiographical roots. Is it a horror movie? Is it not a horror movie? I really enjoyed this conversation, getting to talk to another director about motivated camera movements, externalizing the internal character beats and working to make an original piece of cinema. Did Ciaran succeed? Well, ‘Citadel’ won the midnight audience award at SXSW and comes out November 9th so be ready to find out for yourself! And in the meantime, I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy this Geekscape!

I’m trying a brand new offering to the Geekscape podcast, dictated by my rambling streams of consciousness and obsessive need to over think the media that I take in. Today, let’s talk about P.T. Anderson’s ‘The Master’, specifically the metaphor that Scientology provides and how it can be used to talk about art, film and Anderson himself. If you’ve got something to say, throw it on the site!

This GeekscapePod is a bit packed! I give an update on ‘Doc of the Dead’ and our friend Matt Mogk’s campaign to get George Romero his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Three really strong movies are out now that you should see: ‘Looper’, ‘Dredd 3D’ and ‘End of Watch’. I list why Rion Johnson should be at the top of the list for Doctor Strange directors! ‘Happy’ is almost more of the same from Grant Morrison! Our ‘Sinister’ screening kicked ass! ‘Marvel NOW’ can’t come soon enough and I take it upon myself to welcome Nintendo into the 21st Century!

Just in case you’re dragging ass this Friday in anticipation of the weekend, Geekscape Axel Braun has sent us an exclusive first look at the ‘This Aint The Expendables XXX’ trailer to get you at attention!

This one is an exclusive for the next few hours and IS SAFE FOR WORK, so pass it around to all of your action hungry friends and enjoy! Obviously, being real men here at Geekscape, the actual Expendables was like porn to us… but why not add some hot ladies to the action for the full effect?

Thanks for the exclusive, Axel!

My friend Matt Mogk from the Zombie Research Society dropped by the Geekscape Comikaze booth this past weekend to announce a brand new initiative that he’s starting up that I think we can all get behind. Matt’s spearheading a Kickstarter campaign to get zombie legend George Romero his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! How’s that for a slam dunk? Listen up for this exclusive announcement!

For those who’ve never read J.R.R. Tolkien’s ‘The Hobbit’, this trailer will really help set up the story of the upcoming film, the first in the trilogy from Peter Jackson and company. It’s a really strong trailer too, showing us a solid mix of story, baddies and humor. And as funny as it is, you get to see a bit more to Gandalf’s character than we even got in ‘The Lord of the Rings’ films. An Unexpected Journey releases on December 14 (only a few months!), followed by The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug on Dec. 13, 2013 and The Hobbit: There And Back Again on July 18, 2014. None of those dates are soon enough.

‘Generic Girl’ producer Victor Solis came by the Geekscape Comikaze booth to talk about ‘Generic Girl’ making its way to Youtube! A love letter to the positive aspects of comics, and the classic Adam West ‘Batman’ TV show, I think it’s a series worth watching! Also, Victor tells us about a brand new initiative to give Jack Kirby the recognition he deserves!

Thundercats writer Brandon Easton took the time from his busy Comikaze schedule to drop by Geekscape and talk about his brand new comic book Shadowlaw. This is a much delayed visit because I’ve literally been sitting on Brandon’s new book for MONTHS! Yeah. I’m an awful friend. You can literally hear the guilt in every moment of this episode! Brandon catches us up with what’s happening with Thundercats, what Shadowlaw is all about and about this own podcast, which is perfect for aspiring writers!

I’m pretty jazzed after this morning’s WiiU press conference, so I’ve been looking at trailers trying to plan out my purchase strategy. 5th Cell’s Scribblenauts Unlimited is an easy first day buy and is also coming out for the 3DS. If you’ve played any games in the Scribblenauts series, you know how much fun they are, and Unlimited looks like it’s going to improve on everything… EVERYTHIIIIIIIING!

Now, Nintendo has revealed the Objects Editor… which seems like it’s going to be complete insanity. What do you think?

And don’t forget that the WiiU version has 2-player co-op, dawg. It’s going to get gangster this holiday. You’re invited to the party.

The Nintendo Wii U press conference just ended and there was a slew of huge announcements (and a few not so huge ones). The big facts are that the system will arrive on Sunday, November 18th (start planning your camp out now) and that it will come in two bundles:

A Basic Set will come in white for a suggested retail price of $299.99.

There’ll also be a Deluxe Set, which includes higher storage capacity (32GB), additional accessories and the new Nintendo Land™ video game, will be offered in black at a suggested retail price of $349.99. Europe is getting ZombieU as a packaged in title. I hope that’s the same for the US.

The other big announcements were the free inclusion of non-subscription online WiiU TVii and Wiiverse (or whatever their online component is called) and the expansion of Nintendoland. New Super Mario Bros. U will be a launch game and has some amazing features like an interconnected world map and mini-game challenges throughout the main game that will take the first New Super Mario Bros. for the Wii’s “divorce mode” to another level. Good luck having any Bros after this…

The Nintendoland additions of Pikmin and Metroid-themed games definitely have me excited along with the fact that you can play around in Nintendoland at launch. Nintendo TVii doesn’t seem to offer anything new on the programming side, with Netflix, Amazon TV and HuluPlus seemingly already a part of it, but the fact that you can personalize the experience for each person in the household and switch between accounts on the new Gamepad is awesome. It also has some DVR capabilities and social media sharing that’s available at the touch of a finger.

The Gamepad also keeps cheaters honest by allowing two friends in the same room to be able to play together without using a split-screen, each player with their own screen. The gameplay seemed to work awesome in Activision’s live display of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which also allows a player to use the Gamepad to configure their gaming experience and weaponry on the fly.

Here is the full press release from Nintendo:

REDMOND, Wash.–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Nintendo today revealed full details about how the new Wii U™ home console and its groundbreaking touch-screen Wii U GamePad controller can revolutionize not only video game play but also the way people find and watch TV and video content. The new HD system will offer entirely new ways for consumers to play games and enjoy their favorite programming when it launches in the Americas on Nov. 18. During the launch window, more than 50 games will be available for Wii U, which will be offered in two different colors and configurations. The Basic Set will be offered in white at a suggested retail price of $299.99, while the Deluxe Set, which includes higher storage capacity, additional accessories and the new Nintendo Land™ video game, will be offered in black at a suggested retail price of $349.99.

At a special Wii U preview event in New York, Nintendo also unveiled Nintendo TVii, an application that will let Wii U owners in the United States and Canada find, watch and engage with their favorite video entertainment in fun new ways. Using the GamePad controller, Nintendo TVii lets viewers seamlessly explore available video content from a variety of sources – including live TV, their TiVo DVR and video-on-demand services such as Netflix – all in one easy-to-use interface.

Additionally, Nintendo shared new information about dozens of games on the way for Wii U, including Nintendo Land, New Super Mario Bros.™ U, LEGO® City: Undercover, BAYONETTA 2, The Wonderful 101™, Capcom’s Monster Hunter™ 3 Ultimate and Activision’s Call of Duty®: Black Ops II. New Super Mario Bros. U offers unprecedented ways for friends and families to play together and explore Mario’s world using the GamePad. Nintendo Land, which will be available as a standalone game or included with the Wii U Deluxe Set, is a virtual theme park featuring a lineup of 12 playable attractions based on Nintendo’s greatest game worlds, including The Legend of Zelda™, Metroid™, Mario™, Animal Crossing™ and Donkey Kong™. As an added bonus for consumers, a Chase McCain LEGO minifigure will come as a special pre-order bonus for those who pre-order a copy of LEGO City: Undercover at participating retailers while supplies last. All of these games will instantly immerse players in a variety of new game-play experiences that are available only on Wii U.

“The wait is almost over — in just 66 days, Wii U will arrive with the strongest lineup of launch software in Nintendo history,” said Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime. “With the integrated second screen of the included GamePad and features that instantly enhance the way people play games, watch video and interact with each other, consumers will see how Wii U delivers a completely unique experience and a remarkable value right out of the box. The new system also creates extraordinary new possibilities for game developers, bound only by the limits of their imaginations.”

The Wii U Basic Set includes a white Wii U console with 8 GB of internal storage, one white GamePad controller, AC adapters for both the console and controller, a sensor bar and an HDMI® cable. In the Wii U Deluxe Set, components are black. This bundle includes all elements from the Basic Set, as well as the Nintendo Land game, increased console storage capacity of 32 GB, a console stand, GamePad charging cradle and a stand that allows users to place the GamePad vertically on a table. Consumers who purchase the Deluxe Set also will be enrolled in the Deluxe Digital Promotion, which lets Wii U owners receive points for each digital download and redeem those points for future downloadable content from the Nintendo eShop. The promotion is currently planned through 2014.

Both configurations offer a wealth of one-of-a-kind entertainment experiences, including an online gaming community called Miiverse™ and the new Nintendo TVii application. Using the touch screen on the GamePad controller, Nintendo TVii users will be able to browse programming from sources they subscribe to, including cable and satellite channels, Netflix, Hulu Plus, Amazon Instant Video, YouTube and even their recorded TiVo shows – all from a single starting point.

The selection of third-party games on the way for Wii U will include some of the industry’s biggest names and most beloved franchises. Activision is set to bring several of its leading properties to Wii U during the launch window, including Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Skylanders Giants™ and TRANSFORMERS PRIME™. Other third-party games coming soon to Wii U include Assassin’s Creed® III, ZombiU™, Rayman Legends® and Just Dance® 4 from Ubisoft, Madden NFL 13 and Mass Effect™ 3 from Electronic Arts, Scribblenauts™ Unlimited and Batman: Arkham City™ Armored Edition from Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two from Disney Interactive.

“The integrated second screen of the GamePad creates new possibilities for how games can be played, and further reflects the innovation Nintendo has poured into the Wii U,” said Eric Hirshberg, Activision Publishing’s CEO. “We’re excited for our fans to experience the biggest franchises, like Call of Duty: Black Ops II, Skylanders Giants and Transformers Prime, in new ways made possible on Wii U.”

So what part of this has all of you excited? Who’s camping out with me?

I woke up this morning to one of the best non-Christmas presents of all time (and it would have been awesome on actual Christmas as well… or Chanukah… or Kwanzaa… or whenever too)! Top Shelf Comics is having a huge sale starting today to make room for new inventory! A lot of the titles are down to $3 (and some are $1)!

From Top Shelf Comics publisher Chris Staros:

For the next two weeks — thru Friday September 28th — Top Shelf is having its annual $3 web sale. Check out the list below, and you’ll find 170 graphic novels and comics on sale — with over 100 titles marked down to just $3 & $1! Shipping & handling is a flat fee regardless of how much you order, so load up and save big!

Each year we use these funds to help clear the decks on our current amazing releases, and “kick start” a full rollout for next year. So, thank you in advance for your support, as we wouldn’t be here without you!

I bought myself a copy of Jeff Lemire’s two books The Underwater Welder ($10 from $20) Lost Dogs ($5 from $10).

But they’ve got tons of great stuff. May I recommend Lemire’s Essex County? Anything with Owly in it? The last two League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volumes? What about the incredible Box Office Poison?

If you’ve been looking to break up your superhero reading from the big two (or big four or five) this sale gives you a great chance so head on over and check out the list for yourself!

Sifl and Olly creator Liam Lynch sits down with me to talk about the return of Sifl and Olly, this time reviewing made up videogames on Machinima! Liam discusses making up fake games to parody, what real games he’s playing and how it feels to bring Sifl and Olly back after 8 years! We also talk about Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny, what other projects he has swimming around Hollywood and just how awesome of a game Red Dead Redemption is! Plus a ton more!

That’s right… you’re getting it early so I can get the word out on Bob’s Kickstarter campaign! Enjoy the second Geekscape of the day!

Robert J. Peterson joins me from CC2K Online to talk about his brand new novel The Odds, currently going through a Kickstarter campaign! The Odds sounds awesome, equal parts Big Trouble in Little China, Battle Royale and… chess! We also plug our upcoming Comikaze panel with producer Michael Uslan and actor Thomas Jane! And why not use this opportunity to discuss the problems with the Punisher movies? Does Robert think that they do anything right? Also, Jonathan explains the brand new, Muslim Green Lantern and explains why he deserves to be read! And Robert says that Keanu Reeve’s ‘Side by Side’ does a great job of exploring the discussion between film and digital!

Flixist managing editor Alex Katz joins me to talk about a ton of name changes! Star Trek 2 gets a name! G4 is getting rebranded in 2013! Wonder Woman is getting another crack at TV on the CW! Will Cloud Atlas be a giant mess or a giant accomplishment? Alex tells you why you should be playing ‘Horn’ on your iOS devices! PLUS! Will Doctor Strange be in Thor 2 and who should play him? And who should play Ant-Man while we’re at it?!?

After recording the show, I realize Clive Owen would make a pretty bad ass Doctor Strange and Sean William Scott could do a non-super adaptoid Eric O’Grady Ant-Man. Who else can you think of?

I’m a bad podcaster! That being said, I review “Lawless” and give my thoughts on the Breaking Bad season finale! I also take the opportunity to make fun of Breaking Bad fans who are complete spazzes. Walking Dead Episode 3 from Telltale Games is the game of the year so far! I ramble about music for a bit too long (forgive me). And goodbye to “Scalped”, an incredible comic book series!

Stan Lee’s Comikaze is just a few weeks away and we just received word that zombie fans will have a lot more to look forward to at this year’s convention.

The con has just added a 75k sq ft Zombie Apocalypse obstacle course. You can say that SDCC did this back in July with the AMC sponsored Walking Dead obstacle course but here are the major differences:

One, this one’s inside. The Zombie Apocalypse is conveniently located in Hall K and takes about 35 minutes to complete. That sounds a bit more intensive than the Walking Dead one, which I heard had little kids on the course. Two, there probably won’t be kids on the course. As Comikaze head Regina Carpinelli stated in her email to me, “this Zombie course is something we took very serious… We partnered with a major theme park and a company that does crazy, endurance obstacles- American Gladiator stuff.” So it’ll probably be a little more American Ninja Warrior than the walk-through course we got at SDCC.

Because of the added intensity, the Comikaze Zombie Apocalypse costs an additional $30.00. But the course is not recommended for children 12 and under so again, there won’t be any danger of tripping over a kid that has no business being there.

As the Comikaze website states, “if surviving the Zombie Apocalypse is not something you’re interested in, fans can pay between $75.00 – $150.00 to be transformed into a flesh and brain eating zombie by SFX artists. Zombies are expected to terrorize, chase, and infect the survivors to their heart’s content. Stan Lee’s Comikaze embraces all zombie culture. There will also be appearances from Norman Reedus (Daryl from Walking Dead), and Tony Moore, the original Walking Dead comic artist.”

So there you have it, zombie fans. Start lumbering towards Los Angeles from where ever you’re buried and you might just make it in time for Comikaze’s opening on Sept. 15th at the LA Convention Center!

Geekscape writer Shawn Madden joins me on this Geekscapepod as we talk about potential directors for Warner Bros planned ‘JLA’ movie. Marvel, Joss Whedon and ABC put a S.H.I.E.L.D. series into production! Kick Ass 2 is putting together quite the cast. Rob Liefeld has lost his damn mind! A new team is taking on The Man of Steel for DC and the leaked Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles script sounds awful! PLUS! Jesse Bradford is a big deal and my neighbor has a mid-life crisis!

Finally! A brand new Geekscapepod! Scott Alminiana joins me to talk ‘Paranorman’, ‘Expendables 2’ and the awesomeness that is ‘Miami Connection’! We talk about attending the Miami Connection premiere and why Jean Claude Van Damme is easily the best part of Expendables 2! Superman is now banging Wonder Woman! Geekscape wants you to see ‘Sinister’ early! Who’s in Expendables 3? Who SHOULD be? We say goodbye to Nintendo Power! New Super Mario Bros 2 is the same old great game while Papo and Yo is the PSN game that every PS3 owner has to experience for themselves!

NOTE: Yes, I meant to say Mister Miracle when I instead said Mister Terrific. I’m only kind of human!

This is great news for me! ‘One Piece’, aka the anime that everyone is telling me to check out, is coming to Neon Alley this Fall. From the press release I just received from Viz Media, “Neon Alley is a new 24-hour dubbed & uncut anime channel launching this fall on the PS3, and is the first platform designed to be studio agnostic! Programming will include weekly exclusive premieres of the best anime titles fans love, alongside a mix of new cutting edge titles they didn’t know they were missing!

‘One Piece’, based on the massively popular manga by Eiichiro Oda, follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy on his quest to become the king of all pirates! With his intrepid crew, he journeys to find the greatest treasure on Earth, the Legendary One Piece!

Well, sign me up! Wait… I own a PS3. I’m already signed up!

I sit down with actor, writer, social media philosopher John Cabrera to talk about his new web series H+, from producer Bryan Singer. What is H+? What is post-humanism? Is it already happening? Are we becoming too dependent on our social media and digital tools? What is the cost of progress? Will Bryan Singer ever give John an X-Mans? These are just some of the many topics explored with my new friend on this episode of Geekscape!

DreamWorks has released the first poster for Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, and Tommy Lee Jones. The movie opens November 9th in limited release, followed by a wide release on November 16th.

As if knowing that I was getting hungry for them, Rockstar Games has released a slew of screenshots from their upcoming 5th Grand Theft Auto title, this one returning us to the sunny coastal metropolis of San Andreas. Like the previous San Andreas title, it looks like you’ll be able to ride a bike and do some sky diving. Also, you’ll shred on a dirtbike through some canyons. So far so good.

But the tennis… I know you are all looking forward to the tennis… Oh, and there’s an F’ing JET!

For the past week, Image has been teasing images leading up to the 100th issue of Skybound’s ‘Invincible’ by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley. The images hinted at which character could possibly die at the end of the 3-issue storyline. Today, they publisher has revealed a poster image combining all of their teasers into one!

Check it out below and let the morbid guessing begin! Who will die by the end of ‘Invincible’ 100? Will it be… everyone?

This morning, Nintendo issued a press release about their upcoming 3DS Fall releases. And included on the list are retail dates for two of the most anticipated titles: Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask on Oct. 28 and Paper Mario: Sticker Star two weeks later on Nov. 11. Both titles were part of the 3DS’ original 2011 E3 presentation (Miracle Mask was even playable) but fans have had to wait a long time for the eventual release date.

It feels good to finally have them. As has been proven time and time again, if it’s got the names Mario or Professor Layton in the title, it’s going to sell well to the Nintendo fanboys. I’m looking forward to seeing how a Layton title plays on the 3DS with the accelerometer, camera and other system capabilities. The news that there’ll be a new puzzle available every day for a year is reason to celebrate as well!

Here’s the entire Nintendo publishing lineup from the press release:

Art Academy: Lessons for Everyone! (Oct. 1) – Users of any artistic skill level can learn painting and drawing techniques that can be applied to real-life art projects, with optional, additional lessons available for purchase.* The game also lets users share and download certain game content via SpotPass.*

(Oct. 21) – Fans can look forward to more than 20 new inter-action figures to collect, including Giants that are twice the size of regular Skylanders and new LightCore Skylanders that light up both in the game and in real life when they are placed on the Portal of Power.

The game also features Download Play, which allows players to share the creative experience with friends who do not have a copy of the game.

Paper Mario: Sticker Star (Nov. 11) – Nintendo’s classic Paper Mario franchise gets a fresh 3D look in its hand-held debut. Stickers are the backbone of Mario’s newest adventure in which players use stickers found in the game to not only win battles, but to solve puzzles as well.
