Our journey into the heart of Pasadena hit us hard with the nostalgia hammer where we explored the Neon Retro Arcade.

If anything can be said about this place, Neon Retro is indeed an arcade. It’s not a bar. It’s not lounge. It’s not an urban fusion hipster joint meant to be ironic for millennials who pretend to know what Joust is, but really don’t.

(There is no irony here. At Geekscape, our Joust game is strong.)

Neon Retro is an Arcade. Period. It never tries to be anything more or less than a single story, one room building crammed full of classic cabinets, and a handful of pinball machines.

There’s also a couch in the back sitting in front of a pair of huge flat screens for some console gaming. That’s it. Despite it’s simplicity, a great deal of this place’s charm is tied to the location.

If you brave the ubiquitous traffic on a Saturday night headed for Neon Retro, prepare to do some light time-traveling. If you’re not already a part of it, you’ll notice a retro feel long before you even enter the arcade: having found yourself surrounded by the early 1920’s neo-art-deco buildings. It’s a part of the city that has recaptured that fictional golden age Americana vibe. As you walk over towards 28 South Raymond from any of the nearby parking garages, your mindset should already be well in tune with the past.

Neon Retro’s facade appears like any other store front window. Only the bright neon title suggests that the contents within are of a different era than any of the other shop on the street.

Then you enter.

80’s music is pumping through the air. Familiar theme songs play; Street Fighter II to your left, The Simpsons in front of you, Tetris somewhere in the distance. Before frolicking through the rows of cabinets with all your past favorites, you’ll need to line up for your sticker. What sticker you ask? After only a ten dollar entry fee, the employee will slap (or kindly hand you) a name tag with a time stamp.

For the next hour, you’ll be playing all the games you want for free. FREE.

Or until you get your ass handed to you in Street Fighter and walk away covered in the shame of your failure.
Or until you get your ass handed to you in Street Fighter and walk away covered in the shame of your failure.

Again, it doesn’t get much more simple than that. There’s games, games, and more games. After an hour, you can either go home or wait in line to buy more time. Be forewarned that if it’s a busy night, there can be a line. The few times this field report checked in on the property however, there wasn’t, but don’t say we didn’t warn you.

We'll let you put together the visual pun yourself, we've already been reprimanded for making it too obvious.
“For the last time, no, End of Line does not start here.”

One of the special touches that this place has can actually be found on its website: the High Score chart. It’s an invitation not just to return to the property, but to consider yourself part of the Neon Retro community: “Here’s my score, come to my place and try to best me.” It draws you in, and invites others to come down to see what you’re made of. OR, you can simply use it to brag about how you’re hot shit. Either way, there’s an overwhelming sense that the management who cares for this arcade, cares about the community they’ve cultivated around gaming.

The space is clean, there’s a restroom on sight, and the front desk has snacks. This place is definitely rated ‘E’ for everyone so bring the kids. If you really forgot to feed yourself, or need a drink, there are more than enough local pubs and coffee shops in the area to satisfy.

If there was any real criticism about the place, it could be argued that it is on the small side. It doesn’t boast the spacious rooms of Eighty Two, or the sheer quantity of games jammed into the hallway of the One Up. However, with a rotating selection of arcade cabinets, and a guarantee of an hour worth of FREE games, this place sits in the Goldilocks Zone of Arcades in the greater LA area.

It’s not too big, nor too small, Neon Retro is just right.

It’s been reported that Tron 3 has reached the end of the line. Disney will no longer be developing the film (that was never officially greenlit). In early April it was reported that Olivia Wilde and Garret Hedlund were set to reprise their roles and production would be moving forward.

I may be in the minority of people who enjoyed Tron Legacy, so I am kinda bummed the sequel isn’t happening. Disney had the animated series that didn’t last beyond its first season, so maybe they felt that the fan fare just wasn’t there anymore. END OF LINE.

What do you think of the news? Were you looking forward to a third film? Sound out below!

This just in! THIS JUST IN! French newspaper Le Parisien have just broke the news that two of the most influential electronic musicians, Daft Punk, have signed a new deal with Sony Music and will have a new album out THIS SPRING!

In case you can’t read Fancy, take a gander at the nice translated version right here:

Daft Punk has found a new home. After three albums with EMI, the helmeted duo is about to sign with Sony for his next album. Unless the contract is already signed. Not clear with these two, who cultivate secrecy since their inception and anonymity, although some have been privileged glimpse Guy-Manuel de Homem Christo, openly, at the launch party for the album Kavinsky his friend last week. But the case is heard. The fourth album of Daft Punk released this spring, Sony, its subsidiary Columbia.

After passing up a few scoring gigs while they were busy on the Tron Soundtrack, they are finally going back to working on their own tracks.

Nothing else to report, but I guarantee that if you are any kind of Geek then you have your own favorite Daft Punk tune already running through you head, and we will keep you up to date when more news is released!

After news of a screenwriter being attached to a third Tron film, the question arose if we would be seeing any of the cast of Tron: Legacy return for the film. It’s now been confirmed that Garrett Hedlund, who starred as Sam Flynn in the film, will be returning to reprise his role and star in the third chapter in the franchise.

Hedlund himself confirmed this while speaking about his movie On The Road. When asked if he would be returning to star in the next film Hedlund responded:

“Yeah. Are we gonna break this now? Disney’s very excited. That’s about that. You know, yeah, I’m very excited, Disney’s very excited.”

Jesse Wigutow is currently in negotiations to write the script with Joseph Kosinski, who directed Tron: Legacy, returning to direct. There is no word if any of the other cast members will be returning but production is rumored to begin in 2014.

After TRON: Legacy‘s less than stellar box office earnings in 2010, Disney seems to have repeatedly shifted back and forth on the decision to produce a third film.

Today however, was a good day for TRON fans. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that TRON 3 (not the official title) is again moving forward with writer Jesse Wigutow slated to rewrite the script. TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski had previously signed on to direct the follow up. Of course, nothing has been revealed about the plot at this point, but after the way that Legacy concluded, it’ll certainly be interesting to see where they go with it.

I enjoyed TRON: Legacy, and was quite disappointed when the film didn’t do well (meaning chances of another film in the series were slim). I found myself quite invested in the world and its characters, so it would be hard for me not to get excited about this one!

What did you think of TRON: Legacy? Are you looking forward to a third movie?

This was a lot of fun! While wandering the floor at Comikaze, I discovered an entire Intellivison booth and met original game programmer Keith Robinson, who began creating games for Intellivision back in 1981! This episode is great for old school and new school gamers alike!

Greetings programs! Disney has released the first episode of their new animated series Tron: Uprising online and it is a sight to be seen.

Now, I love me some Tron and Tron: Legacy but I’ll be the first person to admit that they are flawed movies and far from perfect. You know what though? I’m okay with that. I love them for what they each represent. The first was groundbreaking for its use of computer animation and was one of the coolest looking things I’d ever seen as a child. The second played on my childhood nostalgia and looked amazing with its updated version of The Grid and was backed by the great Daft Punk soundtrack. Yeah, sure, the stories weren’t the best and the pacing lags in both but it’s better than a lot of the other crap that gets released.

Disney first announced their intentions for this prequel-series to Tron: Legacy back in December of 2010 and I’ve been eagerly awaiting it ever since. Disney then released a teaser trailer for the series when Legacy was released on DVD/Blu-ray. And now at long last it is here…

The series takes place in-between events shown in Tron: Legacy, and follows a young program named Beck (voiced by Elijah Wood), as he assumes the identity of Tron and attempts to start a revolution against the villainous Clu. The voice-cast is quite impressive, featuring Lance Henriksen, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, and Bruce Boxleitner as Tron. The animation, a blend of 2D animation and CGI, is also quite impressive. It keeps the up-dated character, vehicle and landscape designs of the movie while setting out to tell a completely new story. The Tron-universe is an untapped gold-mine of stories to tell. If the rest of the series is anything like it’s premiere episode than I think fans have quite the ride in store for them. Don’t take my word for it, check it out yourselves and let me know that you think.

Tron: Uprising premieres on Disney XD on June 7.

The first real tidbits of information concerning TRON 3 were inadvertently leaked this weekend at WonderCon; Speaking with io9  at the convention this weekend while promoting their ABC show Once Upon A Time, Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis (who co-wrote TRON: Legacy and are producers on the third installment)  ended up giving an update on a potential third movie. Due to their schedule on Once Upon A Time, they are not the screenwriters for TRON 3, but had this to say “We are working on a sequel….we’ve moved to be co-producers on it. But there’s a script being written right now. Dave DiGilio is writing it,  (TRON Legacy director) Joseph Kosinski is right now shooting Oblivion, but we’ve had a lot of meetings and conversations and we’ve seen the first draft of the TRON sequel.”

The writing duo were asked about the possible return of Jeff Bridges’ Kevin Flynn, who (SPOILERS for the last movie) seemingly died at the end of TRON: Legacy“I would say the definition of life and death in the digital realm —Will be explored in the sequel. Also making comments lately about a third installment is TRON himself,  as Bruce Boxleitner has said the current plan is to shoot the movie around 2014.

I know TRON: Legacy has its fair share of haters out there, but despite the crappy acting by lead actor Garrett Hedlund and a generic script, I pretty much dug it. I adored the updated world of the grid, and I think the Daft Punk soundtrack is one of the best soundtracks in years (in other words, I’m shallow, and to impress me you just need to have pretty lights and cool sounds and I’m sold) And for those who maintain that TRON: Legacy was some kind of bomb for not making Avatar level money…I remind you that the movie made $400 million on a $170 million budget. Believe me, right now Disney wishes John Carter was “bombing” like TRON: Legacy did.
