Stop me if you’ve heard this before. A diverse group of young people with special powers come together to save the world from an all-powerful threat, or in other words, half the role playing games that have come out of Japan. But when it comes to the concept of Lost Dimension, the latest RPG from Atlus, that’s about all it has in common with prior releases. Because you see, it’s not enough to climb the dangerous tower that the team is locked in while destroying their foes along the way. And it’s not enough to defeat “The End”, a mysterious enemy that’s responsible for threatening the world, The only way to climb each floor is to sacrifice one of your own, one of which may end up being a traitor to the team. Your decisions determine whether or not you kill a loyal comrade, or a snake in the grass who is looking to double cross you when the time is right. Feeling the pressure yet?

As a tactical turn based title, most of your time crawling through Lost Dimension‘s dungeons will be spent completing objectives for each mission, most of which involve completely defeating the enemy squad. Basic game play lives and dies by the team assisting each other while positioning them to do the most damage. Every team member has a certain amount of space they can move in, with the idea being to get into attack range while avoiding a potential counter attack. Each character specializes in a particular weapon, (outside of their abilities, which we’ll talk more about below,) ranging from pistols to knives, swords and even their fists! Each weapon has its own range, accuracy and power, which is only increased by closing the distance between you and the target. If members in your party are also in range, they’ll follow up your attack with one of their own, allowing you to pile on the damage. Keep in mind though, that all of the above strategies apply for your opponents as well, so you’ll want to think twice about throwing your units to the wolves.

Each of the 11 member squad of psychics have their own specialties, (or Gifts as they’re called,) ranging from pyrokinesis to teleportation on top of their standard attacks. As you complete missions, earn EXP and level up, each member can expand their existing abilities or branch out towards new ones, with an impressive amount of options to unlock. You’ll obviously want to exploit enemy weaknesses with these Gifts in a variety of ways, ranging from using the right elemental attacks, boosting your party’s stats between clashes, luring enemies into small groups to take them out with area attacks and so on, but abusing your abilities drains your character’s sanity.

Losing your sanity is a double edged sword, because while that character does gain the benefit of boosted attack power and full health regeneration, their defense sinks while teammates around them get weaker due to being overcome with fear. The berserk teammate becomes CPU controlled and attacks friend and foe alike at random, so unless you’re using it as a last ditch effort to inch out a win, you’ll run a real risk of killing your own team. It’s all or nothing mechanics like these that make the combat that much more interesting, especially when the game comes off as an attempt at a “My First Strategy RPG” with how easily exploitable the fighting mechanics are with no real consequence to dying outside of earning a lower end of mission rank, and highly repetitive enemies. That’s not to say the game isn’t fun, (on the contrary, I found myself addicted more often than not,) but seasoned gamers should be able to blow through both the side and main quests pretty quickly.

While Lost Dimensions puts you in direct control of so many powerful psychics, players will primarily play as Sho, who The End seems to hold an unknown grudge against. Sho would have to hold some kind of amazing power to draw such ire from the main antagonist, right? Well at the start, Sho demonstrates his power to… shoot really well? In reality, his main power is the ability to read minds, which comes in handy when it’s eventually revealed that there’s a traitor on the team. At the end of each mission, (whether it’s replaying an old one or completing a quest for the first time,) Sho will hear thoughts from his team in the most extreme game of Guess Who anyone’s ever played. By mixing up your team of six, you’ll have to find the correlation between who’s on your team when these negative thoughts pop up, narrow it down to a few red herrings and the actual mole, then use your limited “Deep Vision” to dive into their mind and discover the truth. And if you’re thinking of using a guide to cheat your way through, don’t bother. The traitors are randomized during each play through.

Then again, as if Lost Dimension was trying to be as much of a reality show simulator as it is a video game, just because you know who you want to get rid of doesn’t mean your friends will agree. The balancing act that the game presents is that your team will trust whoever fights more often. Yet, the only way to pinpoint who the suspects are is by bringing them on missions. When quests wrap up, one or two comrades might ask your opinion in order to sway the votes a bit, but while this concept is great in concept, it becomes more of a chore to keep playing missions just to change the opinions of a few people until the vote is leaning towards the desired outcome.

Outside of the simplistic game play and the somewhat grind heavy parts that slow down Lost Dimension, its biggest flaw is a byproduct of its amazing concept. Since each character can be killed at the end of every chapter, outside of a few personality quirks, none of these people stand out at all. They don’t have strong ties to the main story, their personal backstories, (which can be uncovered by building relationships with them through optional, limited conversation choices,) came off as shallow and rarely left me attached, and uncovering them as traitors provides no explanation as to why they’re trying to destroy the world outside of a Scooby-Doo-esque, “darn, you caught me” speech. Motives are implied through hidden notes and a second run through New Game + provides more details on the overall narrative, but it’s hard to care about when your party members die off if you weren’t interested in them to begin with. The only real loss is being unable to expand their powers, but whatever you unlocked up to that point can be equipped to a living member, making sure those skills don’t go to waste.

So now that my time with Lost Dimension has come and gone, I’m left feeling like I’ve witnessed what could be the start of a truly innovative, potentially game changing series if these concepts are given more time to grow, but one thats not without its weak points. Small annoyances aside, (like not being able to skip enemy turns, the camera getting stuck on walls when displaying far away enemies, having to restart your entire turn to adjust your movement range and Nagi’s levitation leaving her stuck on people’s heads to name a few,) it’s unique ideas are held back by a weak plot and little reason to care about who lives and dies. Its simplistic game play and relatively short length for an RPG don’t help matters, and its grind heavy methods for altering votes make eliminations more tedious than they have to be. Still, the large amount of customization options when it comes to Gifts, the pressure when trying to find the traitor in each chapter, make this one of the more memorable games I’ve played this year. I truly feel like we have something special with Lost Dimension, it just needs some more refinement to execute its ambitious ideas.

Over at blogs.disney.com, the house of mouse is running a poll to help choose who the next character in the game might be. Including a preset list of characters including characters who should already be in, (like Goofy, WALL-E and Mabel from Gravity Falls,) ones I never would’ve thought of, (Kim Possible and Pocahontas,) or even more Johnny Depp in the form of Tim Burton’s Mad Hatter, fans are also welcomed to write in their own choices in the comments section of the blog and the Infinity Facebook page!

One peculiar thing about the poll however, is that it specifies that this character will be added to an “upcoming edition” of the game. Considering that the rosters in these games is usually set long before release, is this some kind of stealth announcement of a fourth game to follow this year’s Star Wars themed game? With as much cash as these things rake in, I wouldn’t be surprised.

Personally, I wanted to vote in Goofy before I saw the poll. I mean, we have Donald, Minnie and TWO Mickey’s at this point. Ferb would be great too to round out the team of Phineas and Agent P, who launched Ferb-less with the first game. However, I was thrilled to see Darkwing Duck leading the votes by a large margin earlier in the day! Infinity could stand to get a little dangerous.

Good news for Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory fans! Dengeki Magazine is reporting that Plutia and Peashy, two of the characters introduced in Neptune’s third game, will make their return in Intense Dimension Tag Blanc + Neptune Vs. The Zombie Army, (and yes, that’s the full title.) After being largely absent from the series outside of their debut appearance and its recent Vita remake, it’ll be great to see the Ultradimension’s CPU’s in a full fledged action game. I’m just wondering how sadistic Iris Heart will be this time around…

Following Noire’s lead after the release of the Lastation CPU’s own game, Hyperdevotion Noire, the folks at Idea Factory and Tamsoft decided it was Blanc’s turn to get her own game. Based on the hack and slash game play from this Spring’s Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed, (which we showered with praise in our review,) this upcoming title puts the Lowee CPU in the lead role as her and her friends take on a zombie army in a new school setting.

Featuring Blanc, Neptune, Noire, Vert, Nepgear, Uni, Rom, Ram, Dengekiko, and Victory II‘s Uzume in addition to the two new ladies, it’s looking like the upcoming spinoff will increase its roster exponentially. Naturally, this is great considering this game will be the first in the series to allow up to four player cooperative play! With as much fun as we had with U, I’m excited to think how much better Zombie Army will be with all these new additions.

On top of the recent reveal for IF’s own game, how much more Neptune will we get!? We’ve gathered every screenshot released so far, so check out the CPU’s in action below, and let us know which character is your best girl! Intense Dimension Tag Blanc is set for a Vita release by the end of the year in Japan, with a Western release yet to be announced. But come on, we got Producing Perfection, and that game sucked! Surely we’re getting this, right?

With the music game revival only a few months away, are you anxious to get your hands on the upcoming Guitar Hero Live? Well, if you’re near a Best Buy, you just might be in luck!

Activision announced that they have partnered with Best Buy to bring their newest rock and roll experience to over 120 stores for two days only! On Friday, July 24th from 3-8 PM, and Saturday, July 25th, from 10 AM to 5 PM, you and your friends can head on over and rock with this re-imagined guitar playing experience.

We got to play GH Live at E3 and were impressed with the strides it was taking to differentiate itself from past games, so trust me when I say you’ll definitely want to see all of these changes in action. The main game is set to release on October 20th in both a single guitar bundle for $100, or a two guitar set for $150. Unlike the upcoming Rock Band 4, past instruments WILL NOT be backwards compatible, so you’re going to have to commit to some new accessories, which is understandable since Live is meant to be a brand new experience.

If you’re still in the Amiibo hunt, you might want to set your alarms for Friday afternoon!

Amazon announced that Palutena would go on sale on Friday, July 24th, at 2 PM PST. One click ordering will be disabled, so everyone who signs in will have an equal chance of obtaining it. Oh, and if you wanted to hoard a ton of characters for yourself, (or sell them to avoid real work,) then sorry. It will be one per customer this time around. Considering how big Amazon is, I’m hoping that they will have plenty in stock to appease all of the gamers who will be viciously assaulting their keyboards trying to buy the Goddess of Light, but then again, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

“We have ample quantities of this amiibo, but we still expect to sell out. Please act quickly at 2:00 p.m. PT on Friday for your best chance at buying Palutena. Demand is expected to be very high, and there’s no guarantee that she will remain in stock for long.”

Previously, we reported that Palutena would be an Amazon exclusive, resulting in a collective groan from Amiibo hunters who are starting to get tired of these hoops that North America has to jump through just to buy these things. Regardless, it’s looking like some retailers are becoming more proactive with communicating their plans to their ravenous customers, giving everyone a fair shot at snagging a rare figure before the scalpers do, which is a step in the right direction.

Did you think we were going to have to wait longer to play Pokken Tournament outside of hoping on a plane to Japan? Thanks to Namco Bandai and Dave & Busters, experiencing the game just became a little more manageable.

During a Reddit AMA with Kevin Bachus, the Senior Vice President of Entertainment and Game Strategy at the restaurant, bar and game chain, confirmed that the highly anticipated Pokemon fighting game from the team behind Tekken will be coming to their arcades as a location test for the states.

From the AMA:

Yes. We will be testing Pokken. Candidly both NAMCO and I are more optimistic about that title and our typical guests than Tekken.

Obviously, details are lacking, but it’s good to know that it’s coming. Still, when will it arrive? Which locations will carry it? And does this location test mean they’re testing releasing more arcade units, or are they measuring overall interest to see if its worth porting over the inevitable console version? Either way, more Pokken is a great thing as far as I’m concerned, and you know we’ll be in those inevitable long lines when it starts popping up.

Shenmue 3 wrapped up its Kickstarter in spectacular fashion, closing out at $6.33 million. This total makes the continuation of Yu Suzuki’s Dreamcast epic the highest funded game in the crowdfunding website’s history. Not bad for a game many in the industry thought didn’t have a big enough audience!

Following its announcement at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference, Shenmue 3 adds this latest accolade to its growing list of accomplishments, including becoming the fastest game to reach $1 million and the second fastest project amongst all categories to do so after a mere two hours of its launch. In addition to Sony already commiting to helping fund development for the PS4 version, it seems like what seemed like nothing more than a pipe dream might hit our consoles and PC as early as December 2017.

Still, producing Shenmue might still be an uphill battle, considering that the first game was infamously in the $70 million range to develop in 1999.  Considering developing a game of this nature now should be cheaper, it remains to be seen if Suzuki and his team are going to give it all the modern bells and whistles that could skyrocket the final cost.

Either way, we’re just excited that the game is finally coming. Will Ryo avenge his father and defeat Lan Di? What role will the mysterious Ling Shenhua play? Will we find any more sailors? And what’s up with that tree!? Here’s to hoping we’ll find out when the game is finally released!

It’s been over a decade since a new Godzilla game has been released. With the King of the Monsters taking such a long break from the gaming world, what better time to make your big re-debut than at the start of a new console generation? The idea of being able to tear through Tokyo while going toe to toe with some of the most iconic monsters from the film series’ history in full HD sounded like a no brainer, so I made sure to head down to Namco Bandai’s booth at Comic Con to see if the king still reigns supreme.

What was immediately noticeable was that watching Godzilla tear through buildings as he collects energy and brawls with foes looks amazing. Watching buildings explode all around him with every step, slash and tail swipe gave off a rewarding feeling of power, coming off as if the world was truly your playground. Considering how long these monsters have been away from the gaming scene, this universe definitely benefits from the visual upgrade that current consoles can provide.

Naturally, the only thing more rewarding than destroying the city by yourself is destroying the city by throwing monsters through it. Once Godzilla collected enough energy, the build up of chaos eventually attracted both Mecha King Ghidorah and Spacegodzilla. Fighting off two enemies at once was surprisingly easy thanks to the variety of attacks we had at our disposal. The energy blast Godzilla fires from his mouth makes it easy to keep them at a distance, while a quick tail swipe can knock them away if they get too close. If you prefer to make your fight more up close and personal, his vicious claws and crushing grabs could deal some huge damage. I don’t think the game offered a better sight than taking hold of your enemy, biting it a few times, and throwing him into a skyscraper. It’s pretty awesome stuff!

The only major complaint I had with the brief demo was the speed and controls. A reoccurring issue with most Godzilla games is that the monsters move far too slow, creating some plodding moments. Then again, this is the nature of trying to make a game based on this franchise, since it’s not like they can sprint across the city while still representing the feel of the films. This game felt like it moved faster than past games, especially since the city is tightly enclosed, but still took some time to get used to thanks to the somewhat awkward tank style controls. Using the shoulder buttons to turn while moving with the sticks takes some getting used to, but it’s nothing that can’t be figured out with time.

From what we’ve played, Godzilla feels like a solid re-introduction for the iconic character’s gaming comeback. With plenty of destruction, and a great roster so far, we’re hoping the main game continues this positive momentum. Welcome back, and hail to the king!

That’s right! Mac from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is in talks with Warner Bros to direct the upcoming Mincraft movie.

Some of you may have seen this guy hanging around MINECON in London a couple weeks ago. He’s Rob McElhenney, and he’s going to be directing the upcoming Minecraft movie.

I would say that this is a very ODD first choice for director, but a Mincraft movie is an odd product to consider in the first place.

Rob McElhenney hasn’t really directed much outside of Always Sunny, he did just land a writer/director gig over at Legendary Pictures for his upcoming film Figment. That film is a family action-adventure script about an over imaginative boy and his family who have to deal with their greatest fears coming to life. It sounds like Rob has aspirations of being a director of all ages properties, so someone at Legendary MUST have given out his name to the folks at Warner.

Right before Comic-Con, Activision announced that the annual Skylanders Dark Edition will have versions that include Dark Donkey Kong and Dark Bowser for Nintendo platforms. If this isn’t a big enough nightmare for Amiibo and Skylanders collectors alike, it seems as if Dark Bowser will be a Toys R Us exclusive if the company’s Twitter is anything to go by.

Exclusive to the Wii version, (as in, not the Wii U,) it’s been hinted at that this last gen version will be a separate game from the traditional adventure/platformer format featured in most entries in the series. For those keeping score, if you want every figure, you’ll need to buy SIX starter packs, which would include the standard Wii U version, the 3DS or Wii version, the Wii Dark Edition, the Wii U Dark Edition, the standard game on non-Nintendo consoles, and their Dark Edition. I mean, Amiibo inclusion is awesome and all, but with Activision’s understandable refusal to sell DK and Bowser on their own due to potential consumer confusion, (since they’ll only work on Nintendo copies,) and this announcement of so many versions, is it worth it in the end?

It looks like Blanka won’t be the only savage fighter this time around.

Remember that tease at the end of Ken’s reveal trailer? Some thought the painted face was E. Honda, while others guessed it could be a new character altogether. It turns out it was the latter.

Introducing Necalli, the animalistic fighter who looks and fights like the love child of Iori Yagami and Heavenly Sword‘s Nariko. Serving as an in your face rush down character, Necalli uses aggressive clawing and grab attacks to pressure his opponents into submission. When his V-Skill and V-Trigger come into play, he’s able to attack from afar with a controlled ground explosion, or will channel a powerful energy that changes his appearance respectively, with the latter altering his move set, frame data and Critical Art! With what could be considered two different move sets, opponents will have to be on their toes when going against this new threat.

As one of 16 characters debuting at launch, four of which will be brand new, it’ll be interesting to see how players take to Necalli when Street Fighter V launches next year. If these aren’t enough, all future DLC will be potentially free as well! As one of the biggest perpetrators when it came to nickel and diming in their games with downloadable content in the previous generation, it looks like Capcom is working towards regaining some goodwill.

At EVO, the team behind Street Fighter V revealed that the copy you buy early next year will be the only copy you ever need to own. In lieu of the “Super” or “Ultra” versions that have become a running joke over the years, (so much so that the company teased itself when it released Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX,) the team promised that all content would be rolled out over time as its completed, which can potentially extend the life of the game for years to come.

But how much will this cost? According to Capcom, it’s free if you want it to be! While the option to purchase these characters with Zenny, (which is bought with real money,) the hilariously named Fight Money can be earned through regular play. Fight Money can be cashed in to buy the new content in game, allowing players to travel back to ten years ago and actually unlock new fighters just by playing the game. Exactly how difficult it will be to accumulate this currency has yet to be detailed, but the fact that everything can be used in game without paying an extra dime is definitely a step in the right direction.

To me, this is the best case scenario of what DLC can be. When it was first promised all the way back in the original Xbox days, it was advertised as a type of PC expansion set for consoles, which would expand our games for years to come with huge amounts of content. What we ended up with, was disc locked content that was already completed and planned before development, content being pulled out of games to sell later, and releasing bare bones titles that would later sell the same kinds of items that would have been unlockable only a few years prior. If this model proves successful for Capcom, we can only hope more of the industry will follow suit.

On the Disney Infinity Facebook page, the team teased some pretty big news.

Considering this post was made on the same day as the release of the Ant-Man film, (which you can read up on with our official review,) it’s safe to say that the latest hero to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe could be making his playable debut in Disney Infinity 3.0. Oh, and then there’s this image.

While the focus seems to be on Star Wars this time around, it’s still not out of the ordinary for more Marvel heroes to be added as well. After all, a new Avengers Play Set packaged with a new Ultron and Hulkbuster Iron Man figure have already been revealed, so it’s not hard to imagine more heroes making the rounds in Disney’s Toy Box. When you consider how easy it would be to plug the hero into the game due to his model already existing thanks to his support character power disc in 2.0, and it suddenly becomes an obvious choice.

Of course, this also means there’s one more figure to invest in. Are you on board with parting with even more cash? As a irresponsible fanatical adult, I know I am!

After months of speculation, dread, and deep, dark fear, rumors of the Palutena amiibo being available at all retailers has officially been debunked. On Twitter, Amazon announced that for the first time, the online retailer would have their own retailer exclusive figure in the form of the Goddess of Light herself.

Following suit with her Kid Icarus: Uprising co-star, Dark Pit, who is a Best Buy exclusive, Palutena marks a first for the popular Nintendo Toys to Life, serving as the only one in the series to be sold exclusively online. Promising to release details for everyone who signs up for email alerts on July 22nd, the figure itself will go on sale at some point on Friday, July 24th.

Over the weekend, Nintendo held the second Splatoon Splatfest in North America. These online competition has players vote for one of two teams, then makes them go head to head in Turf Wars for 24 hours to claim team supremacy. Once over, points are tallied between popularity and number of wins, with the victorious team walking away with bragging rights and a larger share of Super Sea Snails. These items can be exchanged for either additional ability slots on your favorite gear, or randomize the perks you already have if the clothes you’re using it on are already full by heading over to the local drug dealer sea urchin.

In this war between Team Roller Coasters and Team Water Slides, the latter couldn’t pull off a victory despite having a higher popularity percentage. Like cats vs. dogs, the more popular team failed to win more battles, but this time, the difference in wins was enough to put Team Roller Coasters over the top. On the other side of the world, Japan’s battle of Team Eating vs. Team Sleeping predictably ended in Team Eating’s victory, likely because their opponents weren’t actually awake to play.

October 6th can’t come soon enough. The Rockband franchise is one of the biggest, and most popular party games ever to exist. When the fourth iteration was announced (out of nowhere), most fans where eagerly awaiting to see what new tracks we could expect from the game.

Rockband 4 hits store shelves October 6th and will be released on PS4 and Xbox One

According to internal emails from EB Games Australia, Warner Bros. doesn’t plan on putting the PC edition of Batman: Arkham Knight back on sale until the fall. This also coincides with any perceived hot fixes from Warner.

As previously advised,we have stopped sales of Batman: Arkham Knight PC while Warner and Rocksteady work on addressing performance issues with the game. The latest information from Warner is that the updates won’t be available until Spring. Due to this we have made the difficult decision to recall all PC stock from stores to return to the vendor until an acceptable solution is released.

Spring refers to Australian Spring, so don’t get overly excited that the game isn’t going to be seen again until 2016. According to Kotaku, the timeframe for a re-release is so far out that EB Games has felt the need to return all stock of the PC edition to Warner.

This whole debacle has been very out of character for both Warner and Rocksteady. It really shows that this game was created for the consoles, most likely the PS4, and hastily ported to the PC.

The problems don’t affect every installation of the game, in fact the numbers of affected users are fairly low.

We will be sure to update you as more information is released.

Disney Interactive has announced that their upcoming Star Wars themed Toys to Life title, Disney Infinity 3.0, will hit stores on August 30th. Aside from the game itself, the studio plans to release close to a dozen new figures to go with it, so we hope the next month is enough time to get your cash together!

Aside from the Starter Pack, (which includes the Twilight of the Republic Play Set, Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano,) day one will see the release of Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi’s standalone figures, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, and Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels, and a set of Star Wars Power Discs. Of course, if you want even more goodness from a galaxy far far away, Playstation owners can also purchase the Star Wars Saga Starter Pack, which gives them early access to Luke, Leia, the Twilight of the Empire Play Set, and Boba Fett.

Outside of the Jedi, Disney won’t leave themselves in the dust. In addition, the Inside Out Play Set will release on day one as well, (which is bundled with Joy and Anger,) with Sadness, Disgust and Fear releasing as standalone toys. If you want your Toy Box characters outside of the Play Sets, Disney also has you covered with the releases of Mickey, Minnie, Mulan, Olaf, Sam Flynn and Quorra, alongside a Tomorrowland power disc pack to customize your Toy Box with.

I know, this is already a huge amount of toys to buy on day one, but the last release can be free of charge! If you pre-order, each person who does walks away with early access to the Toy Box Takeover, a multiplayer expansion normally priced at $19.99. Serving as an action adventure mode supporting 2 players locally and 4 players online, players will be able to take any toy from the previous or current game and travel across multiple Disney, Marvel and Star Wars worlds in their quest to stop Syndrome. Later this Fall, Toy Box Speedway, a Kart racing expansion, will also release, but you’ll have to pay for that one.

Back when I played Resident Evil 2 for the first time, one of my favorite things to do after I finished the game was to run through the entire thing all over again in the alternate costumes that were unlocked for second runs. At a certain point, I’m pretty sure I developed a strange obsession with making Leon dress like a construction worker and find the right camera angles that would make his armpit hair visible, (which probably explains more about me than I’d care to admit.) Nonetheless, they were a simple, yet memorable way of extending the life of the game. After playing around with these new duds, I never thought gamers would get the chance to submit their own designs, but Capcom is giving us the chance to do just that with their Resident Evil 0 T-Shirt contest!

By heading over to the game’s site, would be designers can use the provided tools to create their own shirts for the game’s protagonist, Rebecca Chambers, to wear. Different voting tiers are opening up starting now, and lasting until the end of July for the first round. After all the rounds are done and the votes are tallied, the winning design will be included as a downloadable item when RE0 launches in 2016! Even if you don’t participate, everyone who votes will get the content for free when it launches.

What happens when two of the world’s most evil organizations join forces? We get a potentially awesome comic book!

Announced during Capcom’s Street Fighter V panel at Comic Con, IDW Publishing is releasing Street Fighter X GI Joe, a crossover event that brings together the Real American Heroes and the World Warriors. As the kind of stuff our Saturday mornings were made of back in the day, it’ll be interesting to see how well these worlds mesh together when the series is released in 2016.

While details are few, this sounds like an idea that’s crazy enough to work, (or at least give us a good laugh along the way.) Considering how well other comic crossovers have worked in the past though, I feel like this has a chance to surprise people throughout its run as much as the announcement surprised us in itself. Just imagine all of the wacky shenanigans a super powered dictator and an egotistical commander can get into together!

In one of the least surprising announcements imaginable, Ken was revealed as the next fighter joining the cast of the upcoming Street Fighter V. As the only character aside from Ryu who has appeared in ever main line game, Ken is essentially known as American Karate guy, who gains a flaming uppercut and a few technical changes from his Japanese counterpart. Once the cocky martial artist actually appeared on screen though, dare I say something was actually different about the fighting game veteran!

At the Street Fighter V Comic Con panel, the Capcom-Unity team, (as well as SFIV’s project manager and SFV‘s executive producer, Yoshinori Ono,) promised us that Ken’s drastic change in appearance wasn’t the only aspect of the character that was getting an overhaul. For the first time in series history, the team promised that the fighter we affectionately know as “red Ryu” will be a completely unique character who uses powerful, “showstopping” attacks that helps players fight aggressively, (and look good doing it!) His unique V-Skill would further separate him from the rest of the shotokan fighters by adding flaming properties to all of his moves, allowing him to extend combos while gaining a quicker back step when it’s time to play defensively.

From the trailer alone, we can see that his Hurricane Kick has been retooled to go in a diagonal arc, and can even be converted into a type of dive kick from the air. While some of his old moves carry over, it’s easy to see that Ken stands out much more now than he has in the past, but does this promise carry over to the main game?

It’s been a few months since we’ve heard any major news on Pokken Tournament, the upcoming Pokemon fighting game developed by the Tekken team at Namco Bandai. As if to make up for this travesty, the game received three new trailers, two of which reveal new fighters, and the third which serves as the opening to the game.

First is the introduction of Weavile, the Dark/Ice type that evolves from Generation II favorite, Sneasel. Using its sharp claws and powerful ice attacks, this Pokemon is often associated with the bad guys of the game’s universe. In Pokken, it puts its high attack and speed stats to great use, dodging opponents attacks and getting up close with ease.

Next, the Generation I favorite, Charizard, was more of a certainty than most. Still, seeing it in action has us all the more excited for the final game. Its powerful wings, claws and fire breath serve as reliable tools for putting the hurt on the enemy, which have carried this Pokemon through nearly two decades of battle. If that’s not enough, its Mega Evolution changes it into the black clad Mega Charizard X, which aims to finish off opponents in intimidating style.

Finally, the best news of all is that the game is right around the corner. Hitting Japanese arcades on July 16th, it wont’ be long before we’ll be able to see the full game in action. Console releases or localization plans haven’t been revealed yet, but considering that it’s Pokemon, it would be ridiculous for it to be passed up.

If you couldn’t tell by reading our site or listening to the Geekscape Games podcast, Idea Factory can really churn out those Hyperdimension Neptunia games. Within the last year, the West has seen six as it is, with a proper sequel AND a zombie slaying spin-off starring Lowee’s CPU, Blanc, on the horizon. And yet, what if I told you that yet another spinoff is on its way?

In Hyperdimension Neptunia Vs. Sega Hard Girls, this upcoming Vita exclusive will put players in the oversized coat of IF, one of the original human, or “maker” characters from the original RPG who has stood by Neptune’s side ever since. This tough, no nonsense guild leader  finally gets a starring role, (and a redesign to go with it,) once the history books of the Grand Library begin to disappear. Altering these stories has the ability to change history itself, so Iffy takes it upon herself to go on an adventure through space and time to get them back.

Not that she’ll be alone on this adventure. As the title mentioned, Sega themed characters will make their appearance to fight alongside IF, namely Sega Hatsumi. This girl with an outfit that vaguely reminds us of a certain hedgehog, seems to be the key to the changes in history between the Sega Hard Girls and the four goddesses of Gamindustri, but how her role will play out is yet to be seen.

Game play wise, details are still murky as to what kind of game this will be, but based on the screenshots released so far, the game seems to be taking a more action based approach, which is perfect for the knife wielding heroine and her tough personality. Whether or not any other familiar faces will appear is yet to be seen as well, but come on, it’s a Neptunia game! It’s practically expected at this point.

The disappearance of the history books means a loss of real history.

An unidentifiable girl who lost her memory. She goes by Segami, or Segamin. Although she doesn’t remember anything outside her own name, for some reason she shows an uncommon tenacity in changing the history of the conflict between the goddesses and Sega Hard Girls. Although she has the spirit of a leader and is charismatic, she occasionally doesn’t listen to others when they talk, and bewilders her friends with ideas out of left field.

Nintendo of Japan has released a statement with the unfortunate news that Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo and CEO of Nintendo of America, has passed away due to complications from a bile duct growth. He was 55.

As the person who guided Nintendo through their most recent string of releases, Iwata is best known as the person who led the charge in releasing the Nintendo DS and Wii families of systems, as well as revolutionizing the way company news was delivered through the company’s much praised Nintendo Direct presentations.

Look, if you’ve played any of the One Piece Pirate Warriors games, you don’t need me to tell you what to expect. Even if you haven’t, but played anything from Hyrule Warriors to Dynasty Warriors, this upcoming game based on the insanely popular manga series is going to be more of the same. With that said, this is far from a bad thing, since it’s been proven time and time again that the wackiness of Luffy, his crew, and his enemies lends itself quite well to destroying hundreds of enemies at a time. Promising to be a bigger, more realized version of the entire One Piece experience, our hands-on time showed that it’s on a path to do just that.

As you would expect from any type of Warriors game, this 3D beat em up will have you choosing from one of the many characters introduced across the hundreds of episodes One Piece has aired. Covering everything from when Luffy first set sail from Fushia Village to the latest story arc in Dressrosa, and told through a 3D comic book/cell shaded hybrid visual style, it’s safe to say that you’re going to be playing this for a VERY long time.

Naturally, all of this story content is amplified by the huge amount of people, (and reindeer,) you’ll be able to take down entire armies with. From the main crew consisting of Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Nami and the like, all the way through Shanks and Ace, and new characters like Sabo, Donquixote, Doflamingo and Fujitora, you’ll never have a time where you feel like the game is too short on characters. If one isn’t enough, you can even take a partner with you into battle, triggering screen clearing special and double team attacks when the right conditions have been met. Did you expect anything different from an anime title?

As you progress, the main goal is to travel across the map and capture bases, which usually involved beating down waves of enemies until a boss shows up. Objectives change as the game progresses, with the hopes of keeping the repetitiveness to a minimum. Even then, if you’re a One Piece fan, (and seriously, what are the chances you’d be reading this if you weren’t,) then it’ll be its own reward to see your favorite characters on screen, using their insane abilities to do what they do best. And based on the episode count, it’s definitely fighting, not actually finding treasure.

If you’re not a fan of these kinds of games, it’s not likely that Pirate Warriors 3 will change your mind. However, if you love the anime, love beat em ups, or love games with a ton of content, then this latest One Piece title is shaping up to be worth setting sail for. When I heard that Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory was getting the remake treatment in the form of a third Re;Birth game, I was curious to see how that would turn out. After all, part of the purpose of creating the remakes in the first place was to improve on the first two games by designing them with the game play mechanics of the third title. So when it came to recreating Neptune’s most recent canonical adventure in Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3: V Generation, the game takes chances with tweaks to the game play mechanics, more plans to create, new story scenes, and larger environments. While it’s reassuring that the game is more than a copy paste job, not all of these updates are for the better.

Our return to Gamindustri is met with complete apathy from our CPU heroines. After enjoying years of peace after the events of the previous games, Neptune and the others have spent their time playing video games all day while neglecting their work, (which hits a little too close to home.) As word of restless citizens forming an organization that seeks to create a world without CPU’s spreads, Nep is finally forced to create some goodwill by getting off her butt and working for the people. As we’ve learned many times over however, work sucks, which is proven since Nep’s questing results in her getting transported to an alternate universe based on gaming in the late 80’s. Now stranded without her CPU powers, Planeptune’s goddess must help Plutia, this dimension’s constantly sleepy, (and secretly sadistic,) goddess of Planeptune, and the alternate versions of Noire, Blanc and Vert, while restoring her strength, fighting off the mysterious Seven Sages who look to rid Gamindustri of the goddesses, and building up enough energy to return home.

For those who thought the second game was had toned down the humor too much compared to the constantly lighthearted story of the first game, V Generation takes the narrative back to its roots along with its original protagonist. Rarely serious, the story serves as a parody of the game industry from the NES days, with bits and pieces of modern gaming mixed in. One of the highlights of the dialogue aside from the constant fourth wall breaking and gaming reverences galore, (does anyone else remember Fighting Vipers?), is to see how events such as the rise of Sony, the fall of Nintendo, and Xbox’s oversees struggles play out. These scenes are an interesting love letter to those who have been following the industry for so long, acting as a reward for playing in its own right. With that in mind, the experience would be even more enjoyable if more of it was voiced. It seemed like the dialogue here was only displayed through text more often than its predecessors, which was a bit disappointing.

Exploration is essentially the same as its always been, choosing which country you want to go to by selecting it on an overworld map. In addition to obtaining missions through the guild, shopping for items, or talking to the citizens of Gamindustri like in past games, a news based broadcast called the Nepstation debuts to break up the action at the start of every chapter. Usually delivering a humorous retelling of past events, selling bulk items, or offering in game trivia, I found this to be a small, yet memorable addition to the map. Once in a dungeon, the leader of the party plays an even larger role, with unlockable leader abilities that boost the whole party. Special challenges increase stats or award Plans as they are achieved as well, so actions like running or jumping a certain amount, attacking enemies in the field to initiate battles, or even accomplishments in battle like taking damage or landing a certain amount of hits all lead to these boosts, giving players an extra reason to rotate their party and its leaders.

Game play wise, battles are largely unchanged, but the way special attacks are handled was altered into a different beast,  resembling something more similar to what was featured in the original version of the second game. In this full range turn based battle system, characters move in real time while they position themselves to center as many enemies as they can in their attack range. Each weapon and ability has its own attack area, making positioning vital to achieving victory, (no pun intended.) Broken down into three types of attacks, Rush builds up the EX/SP meter faster with multi hit moves, (we’ll talk more about the meter soon,) Power does more damage, and Break weakens enemy shields, allowing more damage per hit when completely broken. Starting with three attacks for every turn, unlocking EX attacks that trigger based on how full your SP bar is, and using items to synthesize extra attack slots now give each character the opportunity to use five attacks each round.

While this all sounds almost exactly like the previous games, the biggest change comes with the removal of the EX meter and integrating it into the SP meter. In the past, the SP meter was used to pay for special attacks, and was replenished by attacking, using items or leaving the area to recover it in full. The EX meter on the other hand, was a separate bar that was shared by the party. It could only be filled by attacking, and could be used to allow EX attacks, (as mentioned above,) or pay for EXE Drives, ultimate abilities that served as the quickest way to defeat bosses. While this system was admittedly easy to exploit and abused to breeze through tough fights, the new system makes it much harder to do so.

While trying to strike a better balance is all well and good, I found that aspect to be the only advantage of the new, (old?), system. With the two meters combined, the SP meter is divided into four segments, which also act as the levels of the EX meter. Using EX attacks drains the meter, while each character gets their own instead of sharing it. Draining the bar at the wrong time will leave your characters stranded with their standard attacks while they rebuild their SP, so wasting it is a surefire way to crash and burn. The reason why this comes off as much more tedious is that leaving dungeons no longer replenishes the bar, forcing you to either use a ton of items, or grind out hits against weaker enemies until it fills. Considering how even transforming now costs a fifth of the bar on top of the EXE Drives and SP attack costs, you’ll find yourself spending more time than you want to fighting for the sake of having fully functional teammates again. But the absolute biggest flaw is that unlike past games, most of the single character EXE Drive attacks have to be unlocked, while the ones unlocked throughout the story are mostly double team moves. While powerful, these attacks use up 50% to 75% of the meter for BOTH characters, making half of your four person party essentially useless against bosses unless that attack was the finishing blow. Even if it is, guess what? More SP grinding!

Once you reach the late game chapters, you’ll be begging for the exploitable EX meter to return too, if for no other reason than to keep yourself from shattering your Vita in a blind rage. While Re;Birth 1 had its share of difficulty spikes, and Re;Birth 2 was a bit too easy for my tastes, this third game literally goes from one end of the spectrum to the other, sometimes in the same dungeon. There’s nothing more frustrating than blowing through all of the standard enemies in a dungeon with one turn KO’s, worried that you’re over-leveled, to getting one or two hit KO’d by bosses in those very same dungeons. I’m all for a challenge when it comes to my games, but I would also want it to build up over time. Re;Birth 3 doesn’t do this, making grinding, item hoarding, or blind luck a must to advance through the late game, a factor I didn’t encounter with its predecessors.

That’s not to say that Re;Birth 3 doesn’t have its fair share of improvements. Most prominently, the frame rate in battles and dungeon exploration has been improved to display a smooth, steady pace. Big attacks don’t chug along as noticably, and running through the maps are free of the slowdown that served as an annoyance in the prequels. Ironically, it’s with fixing another past complaint that the slowdown rears its ugly head again. Another long running issue is the amount of reused maps. While this game doesn’t do away with them, new dungeon designs constantly pop up while old ones are expanded with new or bigger rooms, with the ability to expand them further with the Remake system. In fact, while some are reskins, Re;Birth 3 contains more dungeons than any other games in the series by a large margin. However, when the bigger maps show up, so does the slowdown, biting off a bit more than the system can chew processing wise. The same is true with battles, since some feature many more enemies on screen at once. As you can probably guess, more enemies means more slowdown. That’s not to say we don’t appreciate the effort to expand the scope of Gamindustri, it’s just funny that these expansions undue the improvement to the more stable framerate.

Outside of these areas, Re;Birth 3 has also revamped some of its side content, including treasure hunting, creating plans, and the dreaded Stella’s Dungeon scout mini game. Instead of scanning the area for hidden items, each map hides at least one invisible Nep block. Mirroring the exploits of a certain plumber, hitting these blocks uncovers coins to buy items with, while weapons, armor or plans appear in rare instances.

Speaking of plans, there are so many more this time around, bringing the best out of the Remake System. Basically a form of synthesizing from other RPG’s, the Remake System creates everything from new weapons, items, armor, outfits and dungeons, to changing the menu voice, battle music, adding attacks, changing the difficulty, and unlocking solo EXE Drives amongst many other features. On top of the discs that can be burned to create custom perks for your character, and its clear how customizable this game can be, more so now than ever.

Lastly, the Stella mini game from Re;Birth 2 returns, but manages to actually be enjoyable rather than terrifying and tedious. By equipping her with her own armor, weapons and partners to boost her abilities, Stella now climbs the Neptral Tower as she collects items for the party and herself. If you send her farther than her abilities can sustain, she’ll be KO’d by monsters, losing her armor and partner along the way. What helps me maintain my sanity this time around is that good equipment is easily obtainable if you do lose, and partners are recovered in a snap as long as you can reach the floor they fainted on. But most importantly, each map only takes about an hour or two of real time to passively progress depending on how far you are, even in sleep mode. Unlike the dungeons that could take literally over a day at their worst, only to fail right at the end, I would eagerly turn on my Vita JUST to check on Stella’s progress. Considering how much the original was universally reviled, to the point where separate DLC was released to make it manageable, to say this change is for the better would be an understatement.

When my time with Re;Birth 3 drew to a close, I found myself with an enjoyable, more ambitious effort than the previous games, with some fundamental flaws that keep it from being as great as its predecessors. Victory players will appreciate the expanded story, new translation, improved plan system, new maps and bigger environments. Re;Birth newbies will still find the laugh out loud humor and addicting battle system intact with the third game, with further improvements to Stella’s Dungeon and treasure hunting. Unfortunately, difficulty spikes, a tedious change to the SP Meter, and a story that’s a bit drawn out hold it back. Still, this retro trip through an alternate Gamindustri is one worth taking, and continues Neptunia’s trend of being one of the best RPG series found on the Vita. Want a lighthearted, self aware romp through a video game about video games? You can’t go wrong with Nep! Now, bring on Victory II!

 

tl;dr:

+ Neptune is back with the same laugh out loud humor we’ve come to expect from the series.

+ The game runs smoother than before, with a more stable frame rate in most cases.

+ While some of the dungeons are still repeats, plenty of new maps compliment the old ones, which nearly received universal expansions.

+ Stella’s Dungeon is actually playable!

+ Both the Remake and battle systems feature many more options, and are expanded in ways to keep them as addicting as ever. With that said…

– The new SP/EX Meter mechanic renders EXE Drives nearly useless, forcing unnecessary item or battle grinding to replenish.

– The later portion of the game suddenly spikes in difficulty and suffers from poor pacing.

– While bigger dungeons and more enemies on screen is appreciated, these areas are when slowdown rears its ugly head once again.

– The story drags, with no clear goal or progression from about the half way point through right before the end of the game. Not to mention the villains aren’t all that threatening.
