If you remember growing up with Nintendo Power magazine in the 90’s, you might remember seeing ads for an odd looking SNES starring former president Bill Clinton’s cat, Socks.socks-gameplayThe game was completed, being bug tested, and was set to take the Super Nintendo by storm for the fall video game season of 1993. Everything was going fine until the game suffered multiple delays, and never got released due to publisher Kaneko closing down shop. The game is often regarded as one of the biggest pieces of lost media due to the fact that the only copy in existence was owned by a collector who refused to dump the game online.socks_the_cat_continue_screenAll seemed lost, until another collector ended up buying the prototype from him, and this time, the current owner was on a quest to make this game see the light of day. He assembled a group of people and began work, fixing bugs, improving graphics, and obtaining the rights to legally release it.(don’t worry about the bug fixes and graphical upgrades, the original game is still being preserved.) Now the devs ask for your help. With enough support (and $30,000), not only will they be able to release the game digitally, but also provide collectors with physical boxed version! Cartridge, manual, etc.  Check out the link below if  you’re interested.

This looks like an incredibly neat project, from a company with a ton of heart. Let’s help make Nightshadow come to life!

Nightshadow is a comic book-style feature film that tells the story ‘of a former assassin who left her clan to clean up the streets of her home city while also uncovering the truth about her past. As a court reporter, she is constantly aware of crime that slips through the cracks and uses this information to keep her city safe.’

The project comes from Cross The Line Entertainment, a company founded in 2010 with two feature-length films under their belt, both of which are currently in post-production. The Nightshadow campaign will also help to launch Cross The Line Comics, which aims to create a diverse superhero universe based on Nightshadow characters.

I’d like to actually applaud the folks at Cross The Line for delivering one of the most detailed Kickstarter campaigns that I’ve seen, well, ever. All too often you’ll see a simple video and extremely limited information, but Cross The Line has gone all out detailing locations, team members, showing off tons of concept art, as well as a series of detailed videos about various facets of Nightshadow‘s pre-production and behind-the-scenes looks at their previous works. Take a look at the surprisingly interesting, 10+ minute look at the location-scouting process for Nightshadow below:

https://youtu.be/zRKeHpiCheM

The film (and comic book venture) sounds well thought-out, action packed, is set to introduce some pretty slick characters and themes (including a Super Soldier, a military lieutenant with a bionic arm, a princess warrior from another dimension, alien biotechnology, ancient relics, magic, a hotheaded and vengeful vigilante, alien warriors, underground societies, a computer hacker, and a mysterious cosmic energy heading for Earth), and is well on its way to becoming the universe that the team at Cross The Line hope that it will be. I can’t wait to see it come to fruition.

The Nightshadow Kickstarter campaign has currently raised $4355 of its $30,000 goal, and has 17 days left to raise the funds. As always, there are some pretty skookum backer rewards up for grabs, including digital downloads, t-shirts, scripts, DVD/Blu-Rays, props, concept art, and much, much more!

So, take a look at the Nightshadow Kickstarter video below, and head here to learn more about the project and to back it yourself! And of course, don’t forget to SHARE so that we can help Nightshadow be the very best that it can be!

We’re all pretty huge fans of Mark Webber around these parts.

Sure, we all loved him in Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, but then he broke our hearts with The End of Love, and absolutely shattered us with last year’s The Ever After.

Mark is back to (probably) break our hearts all over again, and this time he’s taken to Kickstarter to make his new movie happen. Interestingly enough, we really have no idea what the movie is about. The campaign page is called ‘Mark Webber’s Secret Movie’, and it’s labelled as “a film so potent, vulnerable & personal that he can’t tell you what it’s about yet.”

Interested already, aren’t you?

So are a lot of other folks apparently. Even though Mark hasn’t really detailed anything about the project, his amazing track record and the enthusiasm that he exudes in the campaign video has already brought him more than halfway to his goal.

Here’s what Mark says about the project:

I’m returning home to make my most vulnerable and personal story yet…

Over the last few years I’ve developed a style of directing that uses real life situations and people, to tell stories that hit in a way you don’t normally experience. “The End Of Love” I starred in with my actual 2 year old son, “The Ever After” with my actual wife. Doing so gives me a level of vulnerability and intimacy that’s impossible to achieve in a traditional setting, that I use to push the bounds of truth, rawness, beauty, connection and emotion in storytelling. With this next film, due to the subject matter, and how I’ll have to shoot, I must keep the plot details and cast completely secret. It’s crucial in order to be able to successfully capture certain aspects of the story. Although the images I’ve included of my mother and I are very telling…

In keeping with the personal theme of the film, the rewards available to backers are also surprisingly personal. You’ll find no mass-printed t-shirts or posters among the rewards, but instead, some really rare items like Mark’s watermarked shooting script from Scott Pilgrim, one only 10 CD’s ever made of The Ever After soundtrack hand signed by the amazing Moby and Daniel Ahearn, and even some private acting lessons. Pretty cool, huh?

The project has just over two weeks left in its campaign, so watch the Kickstarter video for Mark Webber’s Secret Movie below, and head here to back the project!

What do you think the project could be about? Share your ideas in the comments below!

We also had Mark on the show just last week to talk about his Secret Movie, so be sure to head here to listen.

Shenmue 3 wrapped up its Kickstarter in spectacular fashion, closing out at $6.33 million. This total makes the continuation of Yu Suzuki’s Dreamcast epic the highest funded game in the crowdfunding website’s history. Not bad for a game many in the industry thought didn’t have a big enough audience!

Following its announcement at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference, Shenmue 3 adds this latest accolade to its growing list of accomplishments, including becoming the fastest game to reach $1 million and the second fastest project amongst all categories to do so after a mere two hours of its launch. In addition to Sony already commiting to helping fund development for the PS4 version, it seems like what seemed like nothing more than a pipe dream might hit our consoles and PC as early as December 2017.

Still, producing Shenmue might still be an uphill battle, considering that the first game was infamously in the $70 million range to develop in 1999.  Considering developing a game of this nature now should be cheaper, it remains to be seen if Suzuki and his team are going to give it all the modern bells and whistles that could skyrocket the final cost.

Either way, we’re just excited that the game is finally coming. Will Ryo avenge his father and defeat Lan Di? What role will the mysterious Ling Shenhua play? Will we find any more sailors? And what’s up with that tree!? Here’s to hoping we’ll find out when the game is finally released!

When former Rare developers reach out to the gaming community to help fund their Banjo-Kazooie inspired 3D platformer, it turns out that gamers are as passionate for the genre as the developers are.

Enter Yooka-Laylee, a project with obvious ties to the N64 days of old. Featuring team members who have worked on childhood classics such as the Donkey Kong Country series, Goldeneye 007, and of course, the two classic Banjo games, newly formed developer, Playtonic Games, have traded in the bear and bird with the bat and chameleon!

Described as a passion project that’s set to revive the “buddy duo” platformer, Playtonic is promising huge, colorful worlds with multiple abilities, near-countless collectables and a cast of characters that will charm us back to 1999, (Y2K scares not included.) Looking to design the game on a smaller budget than what Banjo cost over a decade ago, the purpose of the Kickstarter was to make sure Yooka-Laylee would be the best game possible while being able to maintain their vision.

Fans apparently agreed in a big way, with the project’s funding in 40 minutes and becoming the fastest video game to reach $1,000,000 on the crowd funding website in the process. Less than a day after launching, the campaign had met all of its stretch goals, with new goals being added to improve a game that has already captured so many. What started as a small project has exploded into something much bigger, with a potential orchestral soundtrack as the next goal while sitting on close to 1.5 million pounds, with 41 days left to donate as of this writing.

Scheduled for an October 2016 release on every major console in addition to PC, and it’s clear that Microsoft missed out on a demand that’s all too obvious. For more info, check out the Yooka-Laylee Kickstarter page here.

This is very cool.

Subscription box services are all the rage right now, and Hero Chest sounds like a phenomenal option for comic book fans. If I didn’t reside in Canada, I’d definitely be subscribing to this one.

In their own words, “Hero Chest will be a curated subscription box that brings the comic shop experience to your doorstep each month. Our curators’ selections will be guided by years of comic experience and a passion for high quality comics. We want to send you titles you might not see featured in your local store or might have slipped under your radar. Most of all, we want to send you cool stuff to read! (And toys.)”

As a guy who only makes it into my LCS to pick up my pull list every month or two, I know that there’s a lot of cool stuff that I’m missing. Hero Chest could be a great way to expand my comic book horizons.

Being a gamer in the 90’s meant that you were subjected to a slew of terrible licensed video games. Hell, the game didn’t even have to be based off of a TV show or movie; it could just be based on a person. One of the most infamous examples of the latter was Shaq Fu, a fighting game of questionable quality that sent basketball player Shaquille O’Neil to another world to save a civilization from its tyrannical ruler. I mean, who comes up with this stuff, right? Apparently, someone thinks it’s a good idea to crowd fund a sequel after almost 20 years, and dare I say… It actually looks promising?

Shaq Fu 2 Box ArtShaq Fu Returns!?

Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is being made by a group of developers who want to right the wrongs of the first game by making a sequel that would be good without the celebrity license. By turning it into a beat em up rather than a one on one fighting game, it definitely looks more campy than the original, which is the only way a game like this can succeed in my opinion. It has to be a little self aware if it’s trying to sell this premise. But the game won’t come out without the backing of the fans, with some of the stretch goals consisting of copies of the game, DLC for life, launch parties and even a social media follow from Saq or trip to TNT Studios for those with really deep pockets.

Shaq Fu Screen 1This looks better than it should.

This ambitious attempt at a reboot promises to deliver the following:

– Play as Shaq as he kicks ass and takes no prisoners
Intricately designed combo system that leaves room for a variety of fighting tactics.  Learn the moves and let Shaq rip against his enemies
-Pimp your character with new moves and abilities.  Select from different fighting styles or combine styles and create your own new discipline (Shaq FU is what you make it)
-Challenges for even the best players.
-Adaptive AI keeps the game exciting
Battles against hordes of enemies in the tradition of the lost art of the beat ‘em up.  I mean, who could take Shaq one on one?
Take the challenge up to an entirely new level in unforgettable smack downs against awesome bosses.
Once you beat a boss you unlock him and can play as him in the game.
Fight through the slums of Asian cities, on the rooftops of skyscrapers. Battle it out inside buildings, seedy night clubs, and cause mayhem in the markets.
Smash an enemy through the floor and leap down to a lower level.  Barge through walls and forge your own path.  Smash furniture, toss enemies through windows, even collapse structures – when you are the Shaqbreaker everything is possible

A wide variety of melee and projectile weapons as well as various everyday objects that can be used as weapons – katanas, shurikens, baseball bats, the occasional basketball filled with the wrong type of gas, bottles, knives and dozens more.

Don’t see a weapon you like?  What about that manhole cover or that car door?  You are Shaq after all, so maybe you want to hurl that motorcycle on a bunch of enemies at once.  The world is your projectile.

Wipe out huge numbers of enemies at once.  Bowl down enemies with balls of steel, create earthquakes of unprecedented power, slam dunk baddies with ease.
-Modifiers that change your appearance and enhance your skills.  Transform into the monstrous Big Daddy O and crush your enemies.  Twirl into the Big Baryshnikov and pirouette your enemies like a tornado tearing through Kansas.  Power up into the Big Diesel and steamroll your enemies into Kobe-Patties.  A power-up for every nickname Shaq has ever had, and a few new ones for good measure.
-Co-op Gameplay.  Grab a friend and battle it out in tandem.  Play as Shaq’s identical twin (no he doesn’t sell insurance) or select from a host of other playable characters with different skills and power-ups. Split screen action available, baby!
Co-op’s not your bag?  Build up your character and fighting style and duke it out online or on the same machine against another player.
Once you have played through the main game revisit it to discover secret environments that you might have missed.
Think its over once the Black Star Ninja, is unmasked?  Think again.

Hosts of challenges await that pit you against the best Shaq Fu’s in the world.

On top of that, 5% of the proceeds from the game go to the Boys and Girls club, so even if it sucks, at least the money you wasted goes to a good cause!

Check out the funding site here for all of the juicy details, but not before checking out the trailer and letting us know how amazing this is in the comments!

Based on the short included in the Kickstarter video, this project definitely looks like one worth backing.

It’s called Anna, and it’s a horror film based on true events by Justing Lareau. Anna follows the journey of Dr. Miller, a man who’s life drastically changes when he is visited by a teenage girl displaying the same bizarre symptoms to a past case; a case that continues to haunt him. Accepting that possession exists will be his most difficult challenge, but his fight is not only to accept possession and save the life of an innocent girl, but he will have to confront demons of his own in his old house. The humanity of the story and the dynamic relationship between Dr. Miller and the entity is sure to take you on a terrifying roller-coaster ride of epic proportions.

The project is set for production in Watseka, Illinois in June of next year, but it needs your help. To ensure that Anna becomes the best film that it can be, Lareau and Mulberry Street Films have set a reasonable campaign goal of $25,000. These funds will be used for visual FX, sound FX, and sound design, which of course are some of the most important aspects of a horror film (we’ve all seen horror movies with shitty sound, and it absolutely ruins them).

Of course, there are some great rewards in it for backers. Everything from DVD’s, downloads, t-shirts, autographs, tours, parties, and more! It’s a really awesome bunch of rewards, for a really awesome-looking project!

Take a look at the (creepy) Kickstarter video for Anna below (followed by an interview with the actress who will take on the role of Anna, Alexis Johnson). Head here to back, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Crowdfunding has been making a big impact in the realm of video games, with the most famous being the Double Fine Adventure kickstarter started by Tim Schafer, which raised nearly $3.5 million dollars to fund development for their new game. It’s a model of funding that could become really big in the future, although I’m personally waiting to see when the 1st real failure of crowd-funding occurs, just so we can analyze and improve on the process of crowd-funding, enabling a better service for fans, consumers, and developers alike.

I am a huge fan of the SNES-era Shadowrun game, and to be able to play this game on the PC, with a level editor built into the game, does sound like a real treat, especially for fans of the Blade Runner/Deus Ex: Human Revolution aesthetic. And now we’ll hopefully get a chance, as the experience I’ve just described, entitled “Shadowrun Returns”, has successfully hit its Kickstarter goals! Well done, internet!
