Ever since the infamous reveal of Phantom Dust back at Microsoft’s 2014 press conference, the series has stayed in this perpetual limbo.

While we continue to wait for new info on a new game for the series however, Microsoft has decided to apologize fans of the series with a special treat. This morning head of Xbox marketing Aaron Greenberg revealed that an HD update of Phantom Dust will be heading to Xbox One and Windows 10 as soon as tomorrow! The best part? The game will be FREE and support Xbox Play Anywhere! This is a great way to bring new fans into the fold and show them exactly why the original is so beloved by many people. It also helps re build enthusiasm for a potential sequel or reboot on the horizon. What do you think? Are you going to download Phantom Dust HD tomorrow? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: While I’ve only put a few hours into The Division at this point (after paying a cool $11 Canadian for it, which is like $0.50 in Freedom Dollars), I’ve been a big fan of what I experienced so far.

Shane’s also a huge fan of the game, and while we unfortunately play it on different consoles, I know that he’s going to be a YUGE fan of the news that Ubisoft has just revealed.

This week marks The Division‘s one year anniversary, and Ubisoft has revealed some interesting facts about the game’s first year, like just how surprised they were “to see how attached people were to The Division, citing an average playtime of multiple hours per day,”  while also detailing some cool bonuses that players are in for this week.

You can get the gist of this week’s bonuses from the image below, but head just below that for the coolest reveal of all.

Creative Director at Massive Entertainment Julian Gerighty, went on to note that “The one-year anniversary is a celebration of everything we’ve done in the first year of the game’s release. But we also want to turn ahead and look at Year 2 and how we’re going to support the game for everyone, for free.”

Yep. New content over a year after the game’s release… for free.

Here are the content details that have been revealed thus far:

That free content for Year 2 is coming in the form of two separate expansions planned for release this year. The first unnamed expansion will be based on an event system that drives players to activities that feature modifiers, leaderboards, and unique vanity items that will only be available through these activities. In addition, Gerighty says the team has plans to include a loadout feature that will let players switch efficiently and quickly between their favorite gear combinations, as well as a system to mark a player’s feats. “[It] will reward players for different activities – long-term activities, short-term activities, and medium-term activities within the game,” Gerighty adds. “Basically, our Division achievements, if you will.”

The second expansion is still far enough away that the team doesn’t want to comment on it, and while Gerighty stresses that it will be “more content-focused”, new story missions won’t necessarily be a part of the package. “Story missions are tricky, but that doesn’t mean we won’t have narrative content,” he says. “We can’t really deliver story missions that will fit into the RPG aspects of the game in a simple way. So we’re not going to be doing the classic main mission type of thing, but narrative content is something that we are definitely looking at.”

I guess I need to get through the game’s vanilla content and year one expansions pretty quickly here. That’s going to be tough with the new Switch currently sitting on my shelf.

You can take a look at Ubisoft’s entire blog post here, but be sure to share your favourite The Division moment below!

Are you still playing the game? Will this bring you back for another run?

Holy crap! The game that helped reinvent the horror genre, and spawned one of the FUNNIEST lets plays I have ever seen, is currently FREE for the next 24 hours on Steam!

Ah, Castle Crashers, that one game that really helped but the Xbox 360’s Live Arcade store on the map. This exclusive download title, (at the time,) managed to capture all of the fun we’d expect from the good ol’ days for 2D hack and slash games, complete with 4 player local and online support, a ton of characters to unlock, and a hilarious sense of humor that we’ve come to expect from the crew at The Behemoth. Well, in case you haven’t heard, Castle Crashers Remastered has released for the Xbox One, complete with new modes, characters, and the option to upload your 360 save. The best part? It’s free if you owned the original… But not for long!

Through September 20th, Xbox loyalists who bought the 360 version can download this to their Xbox One for free. Yep, no catch. No ifs ands or buts. You’ll just have to do it before the date. But what if you forget, or are just too lazy to visit the store? You can still pick it up at a discounted rate of $5. Not bad for one of the better multiplayer games of the last few years, right?

Send us those gamertags in the comments and let’s get some games going! Keep an eye out for our upcoming review, and as always, check back with Geekscape for all of you geek gaming goodness.

As one of the biggest perpetrators when it came to nickel and diming in their games with downloadable content in the previous generation, it looks like Capcom is working towards regaining some goodwill.

At EVO, the team behind Street Fighter V revealed that the copy you buy early next year will be the only copy you ever need to own. In lieu of the “Super” or “Ultra” versions that have become a running joke over the years, (so much so that the company teased itself when it released Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX,) the team promised that all content would be rolled out over time as its completed, which can potentially extend the life of the game for years to come.

But how much will this cost? According to Capcom, it’s free if you want it to be! While the option to purchase these characters with Zenny, (which is bought with real money,) the hilariously named Fight Money can be earned through regular play. Fight Money can be cashed in to buy the new content in game, allowing players to travel back to ten years ago and actually unlock new fighters just by playing the game. Exactly how difficult it will be to accumulate this currency has yet to be detailed, but the fact that everything can be used in game without paying an extra dime is definitely a step in the right direction.

To me, this is the best case scenario of what DLC can be. When it was first promised all the way back in the original Xbox days, it was advertised as a type of PC expansion set for consoles, which would expand our games for years to come with huge amounts of content. What we ended up with, was disc locked content that was already completed and planned before development, content being pulled out of games to sell later, and releasing bare bones titles that would later sell the same kinds of items that would have been unlockable only a few years prior. If this model proves successful for Capcom, we can only hope more of the industry will follow suit.

Don’t forget to pre-order in time to join the PS4 online beta on July 23rd! Let us know what you think of the news, then get your games ready and throw down with us later this week!

Though summer may be over, it is still hot in southern California! Well, you can cool down with Free!, though for some, it might just make it hotter. A few of my female friends had been squeeing (squee = “an expression of extreme cheerfulness that goes beyond words”) over this show and now with the release of season 2, I thought I would take the plunge.

free2

Free! is about a group of friends who enjoyed swimming together for fun and competing in swim meets when they were in elementary school. Flash forward to them in high school and some things have changed. Their aquatics center is going to be torn down, Rin went away to school in Australia, Nagisa is now in high school and re-introduces himself to Haruka and Makoto (they don’t recognize him at first), and Haruka is still obsessed with being in water all the time. Will they ever be together as a team again? Their high school has an abandoned/rundown pool, but will they be able to fix it?

This is definitely a Shojo show because it focuses on relationships (primarily friendship – though there are yaoi [boy on boy] undertones). To be honest, domestic/real life anime does not have a particular draw for me (compared to supernatural, magical, fantasy, historical, or horror animes) but I did enjoy the first few episodes of Free!. Now, before I get into the meat of the show, let me first talk about why this show has the ladies (and some guys) drooling. It is a swim team = beautiful men frequently shirtless; it is basically fanservice. Then you acknowledge the water aspect and notice these boys glisten. Yep. Not just twinkle in their eye, but full on, let me get out of the water and stun you with my glistening physique. There is a funny female character, Kou, who joins the team as their manager, but her other motive is that she enjoys ogling the swimmers. Not only that, but she focuses on somewhat random body parts. One time she admires a guy’s triceps and one of the boys on the team questions her obsession by repeating the praised body part’s name out loud. The timing is perfect because as soon as she says, “I can’t get enough of those triceps,” I am thinking, “triceps? Really?!” and low and behold a character voices my exact sentiment.

  free3

The overall style is very Shojo with everything being so pretty and deeply saturated. The only thing that is a little weird is these shirtless athletes have no aerials or nipples; they are like Ken dolls. Though it is not common in anime to see nipples on men (or even most women), it is emphasized by how often these characters are shirtless.

free1

To be honest, the show did not totally hook me but I am curious to see where it will go. The relationships between friends is entertaining, with warm and fuzzy moments, jokes/teasing, and many of the characters striving to be free like Haruka (the best swimmer on the team).

It has the vibe of a sports centered show and the swimming is shown rather well. There are shots outside the pool as onlookers catch the action and there are POV shots that let you experience their underwater world. Watching the show makes you want to go swimming. Even if you have never been on a swim team, you can appreciate the camaraderie. Not every character on the swim team is a star swimmer, they vary in skill, which is refreshing because it allows those characters to develop.

If you want to ogle some pretty boys, want a refresher from the heat, enjoy sports shows, or are interested in relationship shows, then you should check out Free!.

Did you miss out on Disney Infinity when it released last year? Was it a tough sell to invest so much money in a new IP knowing that there were so many toys that go with it? Or did you have the Wii version and wanted to upgrade? Well, if you wanted a taste of what all of the commotion is about, the game is now available as a free download for Wii U. That’s right… free!

Featuring the Toy Box right out off the bat, players will be able to create their own worlds, challenges and games based on the in game tools. The catch? The game can’t be played without the figures, so while you can stare at the icon on the home screen, you won’t be able to play it without at least one figure. If you like what you play, you’ll also be able to buy the game’s Play Sets, which are equivalent to a campaign mode.

While this is a cool way to introduce new players to the concept, it feels kind of empty when you consider that the game can’t be played without the base. To my knowledge, the accessory is only available as part of a Starter Pack, unless you can find some local chain or a Craigslist seller that would part with the individual piece. Otherwise, the only way this would be worthwhile is if people who skip straight to the upcoming sequel get curious about the first one. Still, free is free, right?

Will Disney Infinity be added to your download list?

To celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Super Mario Kart‘s release, Nintendo has announced that three Mercedes-Benz vehicles, based on real models that have been developed by the car maker, will arrive as free DLC on August 27th.

Consisting of the Silver Arrow of the 1930’s, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950’s, and the modern GLA, (which comes with its own special wheel options), this DLC pack will kick off a “Mercedes Cup” tournament. Taking place between August 27th thru September 23rd, players from all around the world will be able to put these new vehicles to the test, and prove their luxury car supremacy.

In addition, the game will receive a new update, with a plethora of fixes and enhancements that will surely improve the game. According to Nintendo’s official press release, they include the following:

Drivers will now have the option to display the course map on the TV screen during races.
The order of the menu after each race will be changed to “Next Race”, followed by “Watch Highlight Reel”.
The game will remember the most recent kart options that were selected, even if the Wii U system was powered down.
Users will be able to change options of other players’ Mario Kart TV downloaded highlight reels, such as changing the focus to different characters or actions.
A score screen will be added so players can see how many coins they’ve collected, the win-loss record of their online battles and their frequently used characters.
Improved the stability of the online connection to enhance user experience during online battles.

Free DLC and a ton of fixes? Not too bad if you ask me! Of course, you can always show your appreciation for all the free stuff by downloading the original Super Mario Kart, which hit the Wii U eShop today for $7.99. Or not, if soul crushing difficulty and a wall-less Rainbow Road isn’t your idea of a good time.

Now that Mercedes-Benz in Mario Kart is officially a thing here in the States, is there anything else you would like to see come to the franchise? And who else will be participating in the tournament? You’ll be sure to spot me in your rear view mirror, assuming they go back that far.

When you think of Skylanders, you’re likely to think about the second mortgage you have to take out to buy each of the new figures every year. Especially with yesterday’s Dark Edition announcement, it’s clear that Activision is still finding new ways to keep the interest, (and the cash), of the Skylander faithful. But what if the series actually found a way to save you money? Preposterous!

Yet, that’s exactly what’s happening with Wii versions of the upcoming Trap Team, because anyone who purchases the game for Nintendo’s last generation console will be able to redeem a FREE digital copy for the Wii U. And yes, since the news was made public, it has since been confirmed that this will include copies of the Dark Edition as well, making this an easy decision for families who either own a Wii U, or are looking to upgrade.

This isn’t the first time the Skylanders franchise has thrown a bone to the Wii U. Just last year, an exclusive, golden Swash Buckler figure was included with special Swap Force console bundles just in time for the holiday season. Between this news, last year’s support, and the many titles that have been made available in the past year and a half from Activision, it’s looking like the company is one of the few third parties to continuously support the Wii U, which in my humble opinion, is great for everyone involved.

What does everyone think of the news? Has it affected your console of choice when Skylanders: Trap Team launches on October 5th?

Briefly: Ready for ONE MORE awesome holiday gift?

Valve’s already incredible winter sale just got a little bit sweeter. Today only (December 25th), the company has made their revered, hit first-person shooter, Left 4 Dead 2 completely FREE.

Just head here, log in, and click the ‘Play Game’ button to attach it to your account. Here’s what Valve had to say about today’s special deal:

Free Zombies!

To celebrate the holidays in a special way this year, Left 4 Dead 2 will be free until 10AM PST on 12/26.

It will be free as in, grab it now, pay no money, and it is yours to keep forever …

Already own the game? Tell your friends about the deal, and maybe you’ll gain a few new gamers to campaign with.

Happy holidays!

Street Fighter is a real Reese’s type title. Always mixing up with other flavors. Sometimes it’s good like in the case of Tatsunoko VS. Capcom, and sometimes it’s not. Like the case of Street Fighter X Tekken. Well Street Fighter has gotten it’s peanut-butter in another games chocolate with the new Street Fighter X Mega Man. Check out the reveal trailer below!

Not what you thought, was it? This nice little game is coming out in honor of the 25th Anniversary of both Mega Man and Street Fighter and can be yours FOR FREE as a PC download this December 17th. A nice little Christmas present from Capcom to you.

Check out the official website HERE.

ComiXology is pretty fantastic as far as digital comics go. You simply buy issues/TPBs (typically the same day as print), and you can easily read them on you iOS or Android devices wherever you are.

I’ve used the service quite frequently and have found it to be an absolute pleasure. Both Marvel and DC, as well as a ton of other companies are heavily represented with the service.

ComiXology is about to hit a pretty substantial milestone of 100 Million downloads (!) and to celebrate, they’re going to be giving away a free issue daily until then.

Today is day one, and the book up for grabs is the premiere of the fantastic (and sadly just completed) Spider-Men. Brian Michael Bendis wove a wonderful tale here, sending 616  Peter Parker into a world where he is dead and a new Spider-Man has begun to protect the city. The serious is wonderful, and is one that is going to stick with me for quite some time. It was well worth the money to pay for, so you owe it to yourself to pick it up for free!

To get your free issue, simply head to comiXology.com/redeem and enter the code #CountdownDay1. This will add the title to your account!

Be sure to check blog.comixology.com/spotlight/ daily to get more free books!

Thanks ComiXology!

Here’s something interesting that I stumbled upon. You might be familiar with Redbox, those kiosks where you can rent a variety of DVDs and video games for cheap and can be typically found in malls, grocery stores, or any public place? Well, they have just announced a special deal on their website, Free Game Nights!

Between February 26 and March 1st (Sunday through Thursday), by reserving a game online through their Game Night section (Just click the big banner when you load the page), you can rent a game for an entire day free of charge! If you keep the game for another day, they charge you $2 bucks per day, which is still pretty good. Of course, terms of service are as follows:

*Limit: 1 free 1 day game rental per transaction. Only available for online reservations (for rentals that originate at a kiosk or for prior rentals). Payment card required. Additional day charges will be $2, except in MD, where they’ll be $2.12. Void where prohibited by law. Cannot be combined with other offers. Offer subject to cancellation or change at any time.

They have a small selection, but with pretty decent games, like Soul Calibur V, Modern Warfare 3, Saints Row 3, Uncharted 3, so if you were on the fence with some of these games, or if you just want ONE day to play that ONE game from beginning to end, this will be your best chance to do so.

Personally, I want to meet the guy that is going to be renting Skyrim with this deal.
