Briefly: Back at San Diego Comic-Con, Ubisoft offered fans the amazing opporuntity to run an obstacle course based on the now-just-released Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (watch last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Unity run here).

The parkour-styled (for babies like us of course) obstacle course was designed to let attendees experience some of the moves from the Assassin’s Creed series, without having to find their own Animus and become an actual assassin.

The whole thing was extremely safe, aside from the one lady who didn’t listen to instructions and broke her leg right before it was Shane’s turn to run.

As you can see in the video below, the actual obstacle course itself wasn’t too hard (except for the ropes, which are a lot harder than they look). Participants could request to compete for top time of the day to win some cool prizes, and of course, bragging rights for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

It’s been over a decade since a new Godzilla game has been released. With the King of the Monsters taking such a long break from the gaming world, what better time to make your big re-debut than at the start of a new console generation? The idea of being able to tear through Tokyo while going toe to toe with some of the most iconic monsters from the film series’ history in full HD sounded like a no brainer, so I made sure to head down to Namco Bandai’s booth at Comic Con to see if the king still reigns supreme.

What was immediately noticeable was that watching Godzilla tear through buildings as he collects energy and brawls with foes looks amazing. Watching buildings explode all around him with every step, slash and tail swipe gave off a rewarding feeling of power, coming off as if the world was truly your playground. Considering how long these monsters have been away from the gaming scene, this universe definitely benefits from the visual upgrade that current consoles can provide.

Naturally, the only thing more rewarding than destroying the city by yourself is destroying the city by throwing monsters through it. Once Godzilla collected enough energy, the build up of chaos eventually attracted both Mecha King Ghidorah and Spacegodzilla. Fighting off two enemies at once was surprisingly easy thanks to the variety of attacks we had at our disposal. The energy blast Godzilla fires from his mouth makes it easy to keep them at a distance, while a quick tail swipe can knock them away if they get too close. If you prefer to make your fight more up close and personal, his vicious claws and crushing grabs could deal some huge damage. I don’t think the game offered a better sight than taking hold of your enemy, biting it a few times, and throwing him into a skyscraper. It’s pretty awesome stuff!

The only major complaint I had with the brief demo was the speed and controls. A reoccurring issue with most Godzilla games is that the monsters move far too slow, creating some plodding moments. Then again, this is the nature of trying to make a game based on this franchise, since it’s not like they can sprint across the city while still representing the feel of the films. This game felt like it moved faster than past games, especially since the city is tightly enclosed, but still took some time to get used to thanks to the somewhat awkward tank style controls. Using the shoulder buttons to turn while moving with the sticks takes some getting used to, but it’s nothing that can’t be figured out with time.

From what we’ve played, Godzilla feels like a solid re-introduction for the iconic character’s gaming comeback. With plenty of destruction, and a great roster so far, we’re hoping the main game continues this positive momentum. Welcome back, and hail to the king!

Popular CW show Supernatural returned for another year to Conversations for a Cause on Sunday. It was the second to last panel for Nerd HQ and arguably one of the most anticipated. The small room that holds 200 was so packed that some fans had to stand against walls as they waited to see actors Jared Padalecki (Sam Winchester), Jensen Ackles (Dean Winchester) and Mark Sheppard (Crowley) take the stage, with Aisha Tyler (The Talk) as the moderator. Absent from the panel was everyone’s favorite gullible angel, Castiel, played by Misha Collins. Jensen tried to FaceTime him during the panel, but he did not pick up.

At the start of the panel, Tyler told the crowd that Padalecki is a fun drunk and that he was dancing around the room an hour prior to the panel starting. Padalecki then explained that he was only having fun since it was a solo trip with his wife and kids at home.

The Q&A portion of the panel began with a donation to Operation Smile in Padalecki’s honor for his birthday. An out of country fan announced to the room that she had been collecting donations from Padalecki’s fans and raised $1,400 which she presented to him as a check. Padalecki was overwhelmed with appreciation and came down from the stage to give the woman a hug.

Padalecki wasn’t the only one to leave the stage and jump into the crowd. Sheppard came down as the next fan asked if the cast could wish his wife a Happy Birthday. The woman received a hug as well and “sexy dance” from Sheppard while her husband watched and the crowd laughed.

The next audience question was more directed to the cast. Since Ackles had recently taken the directors chair, did Padalecki or Sheppard have any plans to direct future episodes? Padalecki expressed that directing does interest him, but he simply can’t commit the time to it with his family responsibilities and his current role on Supernatural. Sheppard on the other hand, replied that he would love to one day get the chance to direct, but he’s not sure if it will be soon.

Another fan asked, “What ideal universe would you live in?” To the crowd’s applause, Jared answered Stars Hollow (the fictional town from the show Gilmore Girls where Padalecki played good guy Dean Forester). Ackles answered Salem 2040, while Sheppard would like to live in his own fictional sitcom coincidentally titled Oh Crowley.

Another question was “Who inspires each of the men to ‘Always Keep Fighting?” This was in reference to Padalecki’s foundation with the same name to help those struggling with depression. Padalecki cites his family as his main inspiration, as well as the support from the fans. He also adds aside from the fantastical elements, Supernatural is just a show about two guys doing the best they can to survive. Sheppard states he believes the show is an allegory for life’s struggles and that is something he and everyone else can relate to. To him, things that are done with love and a helping hand during dark times is what inspires him. Ackles agreed with both his cast mates adding that the interaction and strong connection to the fans is one of the biggest things he is inspired by.

The moderator points out an audience member dressed at The Doctor (Doctor Who) for the next question. Sheppard jumps down into the crowd to greet the noticeably tall fan and straighten his bowtie, claiming he gets to do this since he has appeared on Doctor Who. Padalecki then goes into the crowd and stands next to The Doctor, who happens to be surprisingly taller than the 6’4” actor. Sheppard shouts, “Jared, welcome to my world!” as the crowd claps and laughs. Aside from being taller, Padalecki also points out that the fan has longer hair than him as well.

The crowd’s laughter continued as the next fan to come up to the microphone was wearing a unicorn head. The unicorn’s mouth got stuck in the microphone as she asked her question, resulting in many ‘That’s what she said’ jokes. The crowd and cast finally settled and she was able to ask her question.

Padalecki and Sheppard later recreated a scene per a fan’s request with Ackles directing. The panel continued by discussing the absent Collins’ GISHWHES scavenger hunt and whether or not they’ve submitted challenges. Since Misha Collins was not present, the guys told stories about pranking him and throwing pies in his face. At this point, Zachary Levi came out and joined the cast briefly talking about his new show Heroes: Reborn. He also spoke about Operation Smile and how much it means to him that there have been so many donations.

As if the panel couldn’t get any funnier or weirder, a young girl dressed as Harley Quinn asked what the weirdest fan encounter each of the guys has had. Jensen told the audience he has had spells sent to him with foreign soils and bones among many other creepy things. Mark told a story about how he went to New Zealand and had an encounter with an excited fan. Upon trying to calm her down, she told him “I’m just trying not to shit myself!” The room erupted into laughter.

The entire panel was full of silliness and fan interaction, leaving the audience anticipating the eleventh season of the show.

Saturday night’s biggest panel at Nerd HQ was with the cast of Maze Runner, back for their third year in a row. Lead actor Dylan O’Brien (Thomas) was joined by cast mates Ki Hong Lee (Minho), Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Newt), Rosa Salazar (Brenda), Giancarlo Esposito (Jorge), director Wes Ball and Maze Runner author James Dashner. The panel opened with a woman asking if she donated a smile to Operation Smile (the charity which Conversations for a Cause benefits), would the cast take a photo with her niece? They happily obliged, raising even more money for the charity. Zachary Levi, the owner of Nerd HQ and moderator of the panel, thanked the woman and her mother stating they have given at least 50 children smiles from their attendance over the last five years.

Veterans to the franchise, O’Brien and Lee were asked if they had any advice on running for the newbies in the movie? They laughed it off, responding that they have enough trouble themselves and the others picked it up quickly. Another fan asked each panelist what they geek out about themselves since they are at Comic Con? O’Brien answered the Mets, Lee replied pizza, Brodie-Sangster chose Star Wars (the originals), Salazar picked Batman, Esposito likes Flash Gordon, Ball added Star Wars as well, and Dashner stated Game of Thrones, Star Wars and Breaking Bad. Someone asked how much Dylan has gained from his character Thomas,  the cast sang Happy Birthday to another fan, and they also spoke about Maze Runner composer John Paesano and how the cast grew from the first film to the second. For the actors, they spoke about the transition from TV to film such as getting into a character and the time restrictions between the two.

Levi got more in depth with the cast about how much has changed from the first to second movie, not only in regards to the casting additions, but locations and budget. Director Wes Ball cited that he wanted The Scorch Trials to be epic. The palette of the film changes from the dark maze and the glade to a “sand-filled, rusty, scorched world.” The film took 58 days to complete in comparison to 43 days for the first. Because of the success of the first film, Ball exclaimed how excited he was to receive a bigger budget to play with on The Scorch Trials, adding bigger and better scenes. Dylan threw in his praise for Ball for his dedication and passion to the film and in return Wes thanked the cast for their commitment.

Next, a fan asked about the theme of the sacrifice for the good of the group versus the good of the one, and how Dashner’s role as a parent impacted the book? James responded that, though his number one goal is to entertain the reader and help them escape their world for a while, his personal life and things that are important to him seem “to naturally bleed into the story.“ He added that the important message of the books has always been about friendship, loyalty, and sacrifice. Another question asked was, “if you could play any other character in the film who would it be?” Half of the cast answered Newt, for his wisdom and being the glue that holds the group together. They joked around on stage with Salazar stating her character Brenda doesn’t “Fuck around!” The silliness continued when an audience member asked if the cast could make up their own slang like in the books, what would it be? O’Brien holding his mic upside down then switching it over answered “Meshuganah”.

Another fan asked about a scene shown in the movie’s Hall H panel the previous day. Since the majority of the crowd let the cast know they were not able to get into that panel, the same clip was then played for the Nerd HQ audience. After the clip was shown, Wes talked about how the scene was lit with nothing but flashlights to make it look more terrifying and authentic. Also discussed were who the influential people each character’s name came from (ie: Thomas for Thomas Edison, Newt for Isaac Newton) and who Minho was named after since the reader still does not know. James responded that Minho actually is the name of his niece’s husband and as for the influential person he will be in the future, it can be left open to interpretation. Lee said he would like his character to actually cure cancer in the future and be his own influential person.

The panel closed with the question of, “if each character could be gender swapped, whom would each actor like to play their respective characters? The panelist, stumped for a minute, finally got an answer from Giancarlo saying he would like Selma Hayek to play his character. Ki added Angelina Jolie for him while James chose Taylor Swift for Dylan’s character Thomas. O’Brien joked it wouldn’t work due to Swift’s long legs which would probably cause her to get tripped up while running. Rosa chose Tony Revolori from The Grand Budapest Hotel. Thomas stayed in thought while his cast mates threw out names like Meryl Streep and Jennifer Lawrence. A crowd member in response to the Lawrence suggestion replied “No, too sexy” which caused the whole room to laugh. Levi bounced back with saying about Brodie-Sangster “Do you see how sexy that man is?!” causing Thomas to blush and the crowd to go wild.

Before leaving the stage, the cast greeted the fans and took several selfies with the crowd.

If you thought The Flash season 1 was huge, season 2 is growing even bigger.

At Comic Con, it was confirmed that Jay Garrick, Patty Spivot, Wally West and Professor Zoom will all appear in the next season of The CW’s super hero series, further exploring the multiverse elements that were introduced in May’s finale.

Teased in the final moments of the season ender thanks to his helmet flying through Reverse Flash’s escape route into the future, Jay Garrick is typically known as the original Flash in the comics. Played by Teddy Sears, Jay will join the cast alongside Shantel Vansanten as Patty, Joe West’s new partner on the force. With casting for Wally and Professor Zoom yet to be announced, it’s clear that the inclusion of both characters have the potential to shake up the CW Flash universe considering their roles in the source material. Oh, and if you were expecting Reverse Flash to take up the mantel of Zoom, it’s been confirmed that this version will be separate from Tom Cavanagh’s expertly played villain from the first season, (although the actor will return in some capacity.)

In what ways do you think the expanded cast will affect the dynamic of the show? Will Barry and Patty serve as the Iris and Eddie of this season? What did Caitlyn mean about not coming back at the end of the sizzle reel? And considering Wally’s last name, what relation will he have to the West family? Our impatient minds will learn soon enough, when The Flash returns on October 6th.

One of our personal highlights of this year’s SDCC was definitely Star Wars Battlefront. The title was available to play at NerdHQ and a couple of Geekscapists were able to get some extended hands-on time with the game.

Lots of things come to mind when the ‘Battlefront’ name is mentioned. One of the things that come to mind are the set pieces found in the past two iterations. They’re structured like an interactive Michael Bay movie, with huge, thrilling set pieces that are easy to follow through. Star Wars is the most recognizable blockbuster of all time, and let us tell you, ‘Battlefront’ does not disappoint. 

‘Survival Mode’

The first mode we played was a co-op mission in which two players must survive an onslaught of Stormtrooper waves while completing sub-mission objectives. Players can choose whether or not to play the game in first or third person. One of us, I won’t say who *cough* Eric *cough* felt that the differences between first and third person were minimal at best. To switch, players must hold down the D-pad on the controller, but it only seemed to work half the time. 

Regardless, the controls were easy to grasp, which is a good thing seeming that the last iteration of ‘Battlefront’ was over a decade ago (sorry if I just made you feel old). The gameplay feels natural to anyone easily familiar with shooters. Even if you’re not, it’s still got a pick-up-and-play accessibility, which is the ideal for a broad product as Star Wars is.

The gameplay feels solid, even though it’s in the alpha stage. We usually found ourselves playing in third person, as that’s what we got used to in the in past installments of the franchise. However, playing in first person seemed to be a little more challenging at times.

Upon starting the match, we were prompted to choose our primary weapons. Each weapon seemed to balanced according to the map and player behavior. For example, a Heavy Blaster is the equivalent to that of a shotgun, which will deal a ton of damage, but have a poor firing rate. Players who decided to use their jetpack to get right in the middle of a Stormtrooper squad should go for this. This level of thinking pre-match is reminiscent of the past Battlefront iterations in which we all had our favorite classes according to each map.

This particular map had cliffs and ramps up to higher passageways. Jetpacks were a must. The jetpacks in this game are different from traditional jetpacks that you’ll find in a game like Halo. Instead, think of this pack as a booster pack. It’ll propel you into the air in any direction you want to go, and it’s awesome. Players who pick up the jetpack’s use quickly will be able to get a decent advantage over unsuspecting players.

20 vs 20 ‘Walker Assault’

Unfortunately, Eric couldn’t join me for this 20 v 20 match as he had much better things to do. It’s okay. I didn’t let it bother me.

When I first heard about the AT-AT’s having a pre-destined path to walk along, I admit, I was a little upset. All it took was one match as the Rebels to realize how great of an idea it was. Walker’s are now not as invincible as they once were, but they are a terrible foe to come across. During 20v20 matches, the Rebel Alliance must find a way  to activate and protect satellites so that information can be sent to passing Y-Wings to essentially drop Ion bombs onto the walkers. Once this is done, the walkers will be temporarily disabled and vulnerable to any and all fire. It’s also a great time to get into a Snowspeeder and tie its legs up.

Fans who have witnessed the past E3 trailers have seen just how much action goes on in these multiplayer matches, and let me tell you, the E3 trailer is a pretty good representation of what you’ll be playing. While I did play on the keyboard and mouse, I found that the quicker players around me grasped the concept of being able to use abilities, such as the jetpack, personal shield, and ion shots, the better they faired on the battlefield. This was partially due to the terrain of the map, which seemed to be a character of its own. Players would routinely find cover in the oddest places, like behind an abandoned box, or even behind a small rock. Regardless, this made the experience even better. This meant that players must apply quick-thinking if they are to survive the trip to where the action is happening.

Another major addition is the concept of using power-ups. These power-ups allow players, who get to the location and pick it up first, to use extra artillery. The power-ups I found ranged from a large team shield, to smart rockets perfect for AT-ST’s, and an airstrike.

Perhaps the only downside experienced was the lack of air vehicles around the map. It seemed as if there was a slight learning curve to piloting and no one wanted to take the time to figure it out. Regardless, the few X-Wing’s and Snowspeeder’s that made it into the air were briefly celebrated before the team watched them crash into the ground.

Overall, what little we saw of the game was more than enough to get really excited for the game. Star Wars: Battlefront is in every way playing out the battles you only dreamed of while playing with toys. It’s current-gen make-up not only make it look pleasing, but the technology lying underneath the hood makes Star Wars truly realized.

By now, hardcore fans everywhere have seen the videos. Warzone promises to be the next step into large-scale multiplayer combat. Before this, Halo‘s biggest multiplayer mode was Big Team Battle, which pit two teams of 8 against each other. Warzone is similar in concept, but it pushes out to be bigger than anything fans have experienced before. Warzone is everything you see; it’s new, it’s big, it’s fast, and it’s fun.

From the time the match started, until the time it ended, I couldn’t help but think how fun this mode is going to be with friends. As you’ve previously seen, each game starts with retaking your base from enemies. In this particular map, the base is overrun by Prometheans. Surprisingly, these enemies aren’t as easy to take down as you’d think and I wholeheartedly prefer it this way. It’ll take your entire team to eliminate enemies in your base effectively and quick. But once your base is free and clear, you and your team are then thrust into the large map against an opposing team.

Throughout the match, each team is vying to reach 1,000 points before the other. Points are of course given when you kill the opposing team and capture bases placed around the map. Teams that are down by a ton of points should not be discouraged. If your team is able to rally, and if you are able to destroy the enemy’s core in their own base, your team will win the game.

What makes Warzone stand out from previous Halo multiplayer modes is the inclusion of enemy AI, and not just at the start of the match. Throughout Warzone, players will also have to battle against more Promotheans, Covenant, and opposing team Marines. Marines will keep watch over captured bases and will communicate with each other in an attempt to take down enemy spartans. It usually doesn’t go well.

During the match, announcements will be made making players aware of the presence of enemy AI bosses. These bosses will sometimes spawn, near bases or even in vehicles. Taking them down will reward the assassin with a large sum of points. Because of this, the AI bosses will sometimes act as a nexus and attract a larger battle between the boss and his friends, red team, and blue team. I also noticed that no two matches are the same. The game will change according to how each player plays, reacts, and decides what they want to do. One player may focus on capturing bases while another may want to hunt down enemy AI to secure some big points. Some players may want to hang back and snipe while others may want to spend points on purchasing large vehicles and comb the map.

As points are earned, players are also treated to a new requisition system. For those of you familiar with Gears of War‘s Beast Mode, this will be simple. Players accumulate points in which they can spend during the respond screen so that they are able to spawn with a variety of weapons. Essentially, you are spending points to create your own custom loadout in real time. This creates an added layer of strategic thinking. Depending on how the enemy team is playing, you may want to spend your points on certain weapons. However, points spending is not limited to just weapons.

Players will also be able to spend points on vehicles. The choice is always yours, and with team communication, one team can dominate another team with poor communication. One thing about Warzone that everyone needs to realize is that the match cannot be one by just a couple of spartans. It’s going to take the team. So far, Warzone looks to be the mode I’ll dive into right after campaign.

Halo 5: Guardians is set to release October 27th, 2015

At San Diego Comic Con, the first trailer for the upcoming animated series, Vixen, was debuted. Taking place in the same universe as Arrow and The Flash, the clip below shows Mari Jiwe McCabe beating down the bad guys, (as well as our beloved heroes,) using her unique ability to channel the abilities of the animal kingdom.

Releasing as an exclusive on The CW’s digital only animation block, CW Seed, Vixen will debut on August 25th as a six part mini series. Following the origins and growth of the character as she contends with potential friends and foes alike, fans like myself are speculating how, (or if,) this series will eventually lead to her full integration into the live action shows. With characters like Oliver Queen, Barry Allen and Cisco Ramon making appearences in the brief reveal, all signs point to this being a no brainer.

From the trailer alone, a few things are clear to me. One, I really wish this could have been live action. Two, I’m pretty sure it’s not because the special effects budget would be blown in a few episodes. Three, Cisco’s oggling of every female he comes across is starting to get a little desperate. And lastly, who needs super speed or the ability to shoot arrows really well when you can channel an elephant!? Can you tell I’m excited?

With the voice talent of Megalyn Echikunwoke as Vixen, and Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin, and Carlos Valdes reprising their respective roles, it won’t be long until we find out how this storyline will play out. Until then, we’ll have wait a little while longer for Vixen, Legends Of Tomorrow, and the rest of the CW DC shows to hit our screens through the fall and beyond.

Briefly: If you thought The Walking Dead‘s intensity had hit its ceiling, it looks like you were wrong. Somehow, things look crazier than ever in the upcoming episodes.

Following the fantastic first trailer for Fear The Walking Dead, AMC has debuted our first look at The Walking Dead’s sixth season, which is set to debut on October 11th.

From the trailer, it looks as though things turn sour between Morgan and Rick, and eventually the entirety of Alexandria. It definitely looks to echo some of the Image Comics series recent happenings, but, of course, with its own TV spin.

And what the heck is Daryl up to?

Briefly: I have to say, tonight’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel may have been worth the 24+ hour wait for Hall H.

Disney has officially released the 3+ minute featurette for the film that was shown during tonight’s panel, and if you’re one of those weird people that was on the fence about new Star Wars titles, the behind-the-scenes looks, and the incredible passion that emanates from everyone involved in the video should definitely raise your excitement. If it doesn’t, I’m really sorry, but there may be something wrong with you.

Incredibly, following the panel, JJ Abrams revealed that everyone in attendance would be escorted by Storm Troopers to a secret location where they would be treated to the music of Star Wars as performed by the San Diego Symphony. The concert concluded with an amazing fireworks display that was beyond impressive, even from my hotel window.

Not a bad reward for standing in line for over a day, huh?

San Diego Comic Con is in full swing, and the folks over at Activision and Sony have a major treat for us. They’ve teamed up to give attendees a hands on experience with Call of Duty: Black Ops III multiplayer and an incredible escape room puzzle. On Wednesday night, Juan Carlos and I got a sneak peak at the newest addition to the Zombies feature and even attempt an ‘escape room’ puzzle.

The giant Call of Duty tent was brightly lit, and oddly enough, Jazz music could be heard coming from the lot. We immediately noticed the out of place motif, as the staff were all dressed in 1940’s clothing. Flapper girls and tramps checked us in and lead us to the press area, and we found the source of the Jazz music. A live freaking band was there playing music that would sound perfectly placed in a speakeasy.

Shortly afterwards we were called into the experience. Each attendee was handed either a tarot card or a book of matches, and separated into two groups. The entire room was decked out with posters advertising a boxing match and a mystical magician named Nero.

A couple of the developers from Treyarch came out and gave us a sneak peak at the new, bigger, better Zombies mode. It’s called Shadows of Evil, and takes place in a pre war era. The trailer we saw introduced us to the four playable characters. A boxer who rigged a match, a showgirl who murdered a producer, a private detective who was after some criminals and the magician Nero who killed his wife after she racked up an untold amount of debt. All four of the characters were soon kidnapped by an unseen evil sounding voice. It was really interesting to see a narrative being brought to the game mode, especially one as unique as this.

When the Treyarch team was finished, one of the actors gave us the run down of what we would be doing next. The two groups would go into separate rooms, and we would have 8 minutes to solve the puzzle and get out alive. Juan and I walked into what seemed like Nero’s study. A couple of chairs, a fireplace, a piano, and a book case were about the room. In the corner was a locked item box that we needed to find the combination to and get in.

Soon it was time to begin, and when the clock started a bunch of zombies busted through the fireplace. I screamed like a little girl. Everyone began to scatter. I ran over to the piano and started to rifle through the sheet music looking for some sort of code. I opened the piano chair and found a four digit number that didn’t open the lock. Another person came running over with a piece of the set that had a similar four digit number on it. We soon realized that these were most likely asset tags for the props department of where all the stuff came from. Someone on the other side of the room came running over with four playing cards that all had Playstation buttons drawn on them. We soon figured out the order and opened the item box. Inside was a pair of boxing gloves, and we were then instructed to find something “Not of this world” and put it in the box. The group found a remote control in the corner and placed it in the box and we were out in time.

Afterwards we headed into the Playstation truck and played a few rounds of Black Ops III multiplayer. The game feels extremely tight. The sheer amount of customization you have access to is astounding. The free running and double jumping play very well. It was surprising how much I enjoyed playing a shooter on a console. It was very on point.
