Briefly: Finally, finally, finally, it’s nearly new Amiibo day.

Which is a fantastic, and extremely stressful day.

Adding to all of the stress, aside from the always sparse stock, are the retailer exclusive characters. Unless you’re really lucky, you pretty much have to decide which exclusive character you like best, because it’s seriously unlikely you’ll have a chance to grab them all.

The latest in the long line of retailer exclusive figures is Bowser Jr., who will only be found at Toys R Us stores next Friday.

The announcement came from the official Toys R Us twitter page, so we can all sigh at them in unison.

September 11th will also bring the 30th Anniversary Mario Classic Color, Zero Suit Samus, Ganondorf, Olimar, and Dr. Mario (exclusive to Target) figures.

Which will you be trying to grab? All of them? Yeah, me too.

At the Disney Interactive video game panel at D23, it was teased that new Disney Originals would be revealed for Disney Infinity 3.0. Making good on their promise, it was revealed that characters from two upcoming films, The Good Dinosaur and Zootopia, would get the Toys To Life treatment. In addition, Peter Pan will also arrive next year as the “Toy Box Artists Choice”, after winning a vote amongst the participants of the latest Toybox Summit, consisting of players from across the country who have built some of the best stages in the game’s Toy Box mode.

All of these figures are set to be compatible with the Toy Box mode, (most likely meaning they won’t have a campaign, or “Play Set” of their own,) with both The Good Dinosaur and Zootopia getting their own Power Disc packs. While Spot from Pixar’s upcoming film was the only character confirmed thus far, it’s safe to say that we’ll be getting a few more from both films, especially Nick Wilde from the latter flick.

While these additions are welcomed, I’m especially thrilled that Peter is finally out. Getting Tinkerbell before him is strange as it is, but considering that there will be two Mickey’s a Minnie and a Donald with no Goofy, or Phineas and Perry releasing two years ago with no Ferb in sight, it wasn’t the first time that important characters were missing. Still, it’s not too late! Chances are they’ll arrive sooner or later. Right?

Disney Infinity 3.0 is arriving on August 28th with more content rolling out throughout next year.

At the Disney Interactive video game panel at D23, the team behind the upcoming Disney Infinity 3.0 had some big news. Aside from the official reveal of the Star Wars: The Force Awakens character figures that will launch alongside their own Play Set, the Darth Vader branded PS4, and Big Hero 6 being confirmed for Kingdom Hearts 3, it looks like the ever so patient fans of Square Enix’s crossover epic will get a taste of the power of the Keyblade in the upcoming Star Wars themed Toys To Life game, courtesy of this year’s Ultimate Unlock! But the question must be asked; could this be foreshadowing something more!?

Disney Infinity 3.0 Keyblade Screen 1

In past versions, the Ultimate Unlock was a reward for buying every figure and leveling them up to at least level 1. Yes, that’s one expensive piece of DLC, (over $400 to give you an idea,) but the team always tried to make it worth it for their most dedicated fans. The first game unlocked a lightsaber, a full two years before Star Wars would get its own game. That left the likes of Mr. Incredible, Jack Sparrow, Anna and Elsa with the power of The Force. The second game awarded players with Luke Skywalker’s speeder, another tease at what would finally arrive in the third game. With Kingdom Hearts being teased between the Ultimate Unlock, and the con exclusive power disc that gives Mickey his king costume from the RPG, it’s safe to assume that a future game could become a full on collectable campaign featuring this universe. Imagine Sora, Riku, Kairi and Aqua getting the figure treatment!? Ugh, my money!

Will this reveal sway you when it comes to letting the addiction take over? Or are you more likely to give 3.0 a chance now that Kingdom Hearts has some representation? Either way, this might be the closest we’ll get to the series for the next 15 years when KH 3 will finally release. Sound off below and have your opinion be heard!

Disney Interactive has announced that their upcoming Star Wars themed Toys to Life title, Disney Infinity 3.0, will hit stores on August 30th. Aside from the game itself, the studio plans to release close to a dozen new figures to go with it, so we hope the next month is enough time to get your cash together!

Aside from the Starter Pack, (which includes the Twilight of the Republic Play Set, Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano,) day one will see the release of Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi’s standalone figures, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, and Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels, and a set of Star Wars Power Discs. Of course, if you want even more goodness from a galaxy far far away, Playstation owners can also purchase the Star Wars Saga Starter Pack, which gives them early access to Luke, Leia, the Twilight of the Empire Play Set, and Boba Fett.

Outside of the Jedi, Disney won’t leave themselves in the dust. In addition, the Inside Out Play Set will release on day one as well, (which is bundled with Joy and Anger,) with Sadness, Disgust and Fear releasing as standalone toys. If you want your Toy Box characters outside of the Play Sets, Disney also has you covered with the releases of Mickey, Minnie, Mulan, Olaf, Sam Flynn and Quorra, alongside a Tomorrowland power disc pack to customize your Toy Box with.

I know, this is already a huge amount of toys to buy on day one, but the last release can be free of charge! If you pre-order, each person who does walks away with early access to the Toy Box Takeover, a multiplayer expansion normally priced at $19.99. Serving as an action adventure mode supporting 2 players locally and 4 players online, players will be able to take any toy from the previous or current game and travel across multiple Disney, Marvel and Star Wars worlds in their quest to stop Syndrome. Later this Fall, Toy Box Speedway, a Kart racing expansion, will also release, but you’ll have to pay for that one.

Toy Box Expansion Games unlock additional hours of gameplay inside Toy Box 3.0.  Players place a Toy Box Expansion Game Piece on the Disney Infinity Base to unlock pre-built games that instantly take them into the action, mixing and matching characters from across The Walt Disney Company and using unlocked toys and gadgets to complete missions.

Toy Box Expansion Game Overviews:

Toy Box Takeover

When Syndrome gets his hands on Merlin’s magic wand, it’s up to the player to stop him.  Using their favorite characters in Disney Infinity, they must battle across multiple worlds, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Marvel’s Upper Manhattan, The Old West, or The Incredibles Volcano Lair to defeat the bad guys before they ruin the Toy Box forever. Players can complete missions with family and friends via two-player local co-op or four-player online.

Toy Box Speedway

Players can join their favorite Disney, Disney•Pixar, Marvel’s and Star Wars characters and vehicles in an action-packed kart-racer.  With nine franchise-themed tracks to choose from – Sugar Rush, Frozen, Tatooine, a classic Star Wars location, San Fransokyo, Agrabah, Monsters Inc., Halloween Town, Gravity Falls or Marvel’s Knowhere – they can choose from three different game modes including Time Trial mode, Race mode and Combat mode.   Players put their driving skills to the test as they attack opponents with gadgets and weapons and earn trophies across three challenge cups.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition Video Game and Base are required to play the Toy Box Expansion Games.  Toy Box Takeover and Toy Box Speedway will be sold separately at the suggested retail price of $19.99 each later this fall.

All figures and Power Discs from the 1.0 and 2.0 editions of Disney Infinity will be compatible with Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition in the enhanced Toy Box 3.0.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Toy Box Screen 3

We were lucky enough to try out the Play Sets and the Toy Box Speedway between E3 and Comic Con, which you’ll be able to read about really soon! Until then, let us know if Disney has you hooked and what content you’re planning on buying! And don’t forget, follow our Twitter feeds @geekscapedotnet and @geekscapegames to find out how to win a Darth Vader figure in advance!

In between all of the news surrounding announcements for The Last Guardian, Shenmue III and of course, Final Fantasy VII, there was some exciting news coming out of Sony’s E3 press conference for Disney Infinity and Star Wars fans alike, but not so much if you’re not a Playstation gamer.

Much like last year’s exclusive collector’s edition which included The Hulk before he was released in stores, PS3 and PS4 owners will get early access to Boba Fett, as well as the Rise Against The Empire Play Set in a special Disney Infinity 3.0 starter pack. Dubbed the “Star Wars Saga Starter Pack, this set will include everyone’s favorite bounty hunter who doesn’t really do much in canon material, bundled with the Rise Against the Empire pack a few months in advance, (which comes bundled with Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa,) as well as the standard Twilight of the Empire pack, (which includes Clone Wars favorites, Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano.) Retailing at $114.99, which is essentially the price of each item individually, do you really need to ask which version to get if you own a Sony console?

Mosey on down to the reveal trailer for the Rise Against the Empire Play Set below, and tell us if the inclusion of Boba Fett will sway your decision to pick up Disney’s next Toys To Life title, and make sure to check back for our full hands on impressions from the show floor!

Disney Interactive revealed what collectors and Star Wars fans alike have been expecting all year, Disney Infinity 3.0 is coming this holiday season, bringing the power of The Force along with it.

Much like with Marvel last year, 3.0 is integrating the Star Wars universe into the addictive nature of the Toys To Life genre. Launching with a starter pack based around the Clone Wars animated series titled Twilght Of The Republic, this toy box, (or campaign,) comes packaged with Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Darth Maul rounding out that set. In addition, other Star Wars play sets will include Rise Against The Empire, bringing the Episode IV-VI universe to life with Luke, Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca and Darth Vader. Finally, The Force Awakens will arrive shortly after the game, and is based around a certain holiday film that you may have heard of. The characters featured are under wrapps since they surely cross into spoiler territory, but I can’t help but be excited about what it will have in store. Adding the fact that Ninja Theory of DmC: Devil May Cry and Heavenly Sword fame will be designing the Lightsaber combat, and we might just get a combat experience that’s deeper than in previous games.

With so much Star Wars content on the way, it’s surely more than enough to satisfy anyone’s inner geek. Yet, one of my biggest problems with 2.0 is that it ended its run with two fewer Play Sets than its predecessor, with nearly all Disney content being shoved aside for Marvel. Thankfully, the same mistake isn’t being made twice. Not only will Star Wars be well represented, but Marvel will receive a new Play Set based around Age Of Ultron. Details are few, but it’s implied that in addition to new Hulkbuster Iron Man and Ultron figures, The Avengers from the second game will still be compatible with the new content, (though I wouldn’t be shocked if new variants don’t launch alongside it.)

On top of that, the game with “Disney” in the title is finally getting some new Disney content in the form of the Inside Out Play Set based on the upcoming Pixar film. As I guessed in our lost episode of Geekscape Games last week, the leaked figures that featured five different Emotions from the film are set to be playable in their own campaign. Completing the Disney cast so far is Classic Mickey, (trading in his sorcerer gear for the iconic red shorts,) Minnie Mouse, Sam Flynn and Quorra from the new Tron films, Mulan, and Frozen‘s Olaf. That’s all well and good, but are we going to have to wait at least ANOTHER year for Goofy?

If this huge info dump wasn’t enough already, issues with the series are going to be addressed in 3.0, making it easier to collect our Power Discs, (essentially physical costume and weapon DLC,) and loosen restrictions on how we can play. No longer in blind packs, discs will now come in labeled packages, killing the days of buying two duplicates for five dollars. While the other Play Sets weren’t mentioned, Star Wars sets specifically will allow all characters from the universe to be used in every campaign. So in other words, if you want to team up Darth Vader with his past self, or see how Ahsoka would fare against the Galactic Empire, you’re free to do so. Even the customizable Toy Box is getting an upgrade, allowing your Disney, Marvel and Star Wars characters to co-exist in a variety of user generated games.

The best part? The game is getting a $10 discount! Breaking away from the Skylanders standard, the upcoming pack will retail for $65. Citing “fan feedback” as the  reason for the reduction, I wouldn’t be surprised if said feedback came from the fear of people jumping to Lego Dimensions, distancing the Disney game from the $100 price tag of its competitor once the holiday season rolls around. Either way, it’s a win for us gamers!

So now that you’ve taken in all that information, are you excited? Let us know if you’re continuing the addiction, or getting your first galactic fix.

Briefly: When the highly sought-after Gold Mario Amiibo figure was officially announced for Canada this morning, I (being Canadian) was quick to notice that the figure carried an increased price tag of $15.99 (as opposed to the $13.99 we’re used to paying).

I hoped (without much confidence) that the higher price was due to the special nature of this figuring, but after reaching out to Nintendo of Canada, I received the official word:

After careful review, Nintendo of Canada Ltd. will increase the suggested retail price of its amiibo toy-to-life product line beginning April 1, 2015. The MSRP will increase from $13.99 CAD to $15.99 CAD for all amiibo launched in Canada after April 1. The price increase is in direct response to current and future projected exchange rates between Canadian and US dollars. Retailers are free to set their own prices.

It’s not surprising by any means, as our ailing dollar has led to price increases for video games, consoles, and countless other electronics. It would be fantastic, however, if our dollar saw a turnaround sometime soon so that my insane habits could be a little more affordable.

The two dollar price increase certainly hasn’t made the hunt any less attractive, I guess I’ll just have to eat a little more ramen to keep my collection complete. Canadians, what do you think?

NOVEL_ura_0613

Briefly: Rejoice, Canadians!

After tons of speculation and doubt (and non-communication) as to whether or not we’d see the Gold Mario Amiibo in Canada at all, Nintendo has officially revealed that the figure will hit retailers across Canada on April 10th. From the just received Press Release:

In addition, on April 10 Nintendo of Canada will launch the Super Mario series Mario amiibo—Gold Edition figure, a shiny, gold-coloured Mario figure that will be available at retailers across Canada at a suggested retail price of $15.99.

This is great news. As a Canadian with a current-until-Friday collection of 29/29, I was just about to head to eBay to acquire this sexy new figure. Now it appears that I won’t have to. Note that Nintendo states retailers across Canada, meaning that this won’t be a Wal Mart exclusive up here! $15.99 however, is an interesting price point. I’m really hoping we’re seeing the increase simply because this is a limited edition figure, and that it’s not the new standard Amiibo price in Canada. Damn dollar.

So Canadians, will you be picking one of these up? Or did you already turn to eBay? Sound out below!

NOVEL_ura_0613

Briefly: Amiibo hunters everywhere are preparing for the March 20th launch of the first wave of Super Mario Bros. Collection figures, but little did we know that we’ll actually be getting larger figures this time around.

GameInformer just received their figures prior to next week’s launch, and noted that there’s a pretty substantial difference in the size of these figures in comparison to the Super Smash Bros. lineup. Whether it’s to make the new line feel more like highly-detailed board game pieces (for Mario Party 10‘s Amiibo Party mode, of course), or another reason entirely remains to be seen, but it’s clear from their photos that these new figures look rad… and I can’t wait to buy them all (and camp out for the Golden Mario).

Take a look at a couple of the comparisons below, and head to Game Informer for more.

Party_610d

Party_610e

Briefly: During an investor’s call earlier today, the big N revealed its list of the most popular Amiibo figures to date. There are really no surprises to be found here, and only the common figures even made the list (probably because there are a ton of people who have never even seen certain figures in real life). Of course, our buddy Link was the most popular character, and Mario himself was right behind him. Here’s the whole list:

Link
Mario
Pikachu
Kirby
Samus
Yoshi
Zelda
Donkey Kong
Peach
Luigi

Nice to see that Luigi made the list (though he was last of the top 10), though I wonder if that would be the case if all of the figures were readily available. Interestingly enough, Nintendo noted that 63 percent of Amiibo sales have been from North America, which may explain the photos of fully-stocked Amiibo shelves from everywhere else in the world. Europe sits at 23 percent, Japan at 11, and just 3 percent for Australia.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata also revealed that in the near future Amiibo figures will unlock timed trials of Wii U Virtual Console games, and that those Amiibo cards that were rumoured a few months back are still in the works.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m addicted to the damned things… I own the complete top 10, and a whole lot more. Which figures are you still hunting for? Are you down with the Amiibo Cards? Sound out below!

Amiibo Wave 1

Briefly: Nobody knows what it means at this point, but in some way, shape, or form, Nintendo has thought about variant Amiibo.

NeoGAF user KT$2448 has discovered CSPIA certificates on Nintendo’s official website pointing to Silver and Gold Edition versions of the Mario Amiibo.

Nintendo is yet to comment on the findings, but if these end up being released, it’s bound to be hell for Amiibo hunters everywhere. Wave 3 figures have been hard enough to come by in stores, and any additional pre-order units typically sell within minutes. Gold and Silver Edition figures could make those Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer figures that you’re still hunting for seem common in comparison.

Are you still hunting for wave 3? What do you think of the prospect of variant figures? Speculate below, and we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as we learn more!

Until now, there’s been a general divide between Disney and Marvel since the two entertainment giants become one. With the upcoming film release of Big Hero 6 however, this will mark the first true collaboration between the two entities, with Disney making a full on animated film that’s inspired by a relatively unknown Marvel property. Naturally, we knew that there would be some form of representation in the upcoming Marvel focused game, Disney Infinity 2.0.

That representation comes in the form of Hiro and Baymax, who show off some of their abilities in their reveal trailer below. With Hiro’s ability to attack with the earth below him, and Baymax pulling his weight with long range energy blasts, the two characters look like they’ll fit right into the action packed potential of the Toy Box. Even more interesting, are the shots of Hiro riding on his robotic companion. Is that an ability unique to them, or will all larger characters be able to carry smaller ones? Oh, what I wouldn’t give to watch Hulk give Captain America a piggyback ride.

As far as we can tell, everything looks on track to make these two into welcomed addition to the cast. Let’s just hope they don’t turn out like the Frozen characters in the first game, where they ended up as bare bones additions that lacked many of their personality traits from the film. That’s what happens when video game characters are developed before the source material is released.

From what you’ve seen, does it look like Hiro and Baymax will be added to your collection? Disney Infinity 2.0 is set for September 23rd, with the Big Hero Six figures releasing sometime in the fall.

<cite>www.youtube.com/watch?v=ME-kFP8zqck</cite>

Since it was announced, the folks behind Disney Infinity 2.0 have assured us that while the focus is definitely on bringing their Marvel properties into the game, core Disney characters and owners of the original portals would not be forgotten. Details were scarce until now, when the Toy Box Starter Pack was officially announced.

Packaged with an Infinity Base, Stich, Merida, and Toy Box Game Discs featuring themed missions for both, the package will retail for $59.99, which is $25 cheaper than the Marvel starter set, albiet with no campaign missions and one less figure. Still, with limitless possibilities with the level creator, and the ability to download stages formed by the online community, this bundle still promises to be well worth it.

For those who have no interest in the Marvel pack, (wherever you are), or just want to play around with the new Toy Box without having to buy any new figures outside of the dozens you might own from the first game, then this might be a good buy. Still, I’m a little disappointed that it doesn’t seem like the Disney characters will receive any large scale campaign missions. It seems like these are reserved for their super hero bretheren.

Does the Toy Box Starter Pack sound like something you would pick up this holiday season? The Marvel Super Heroes Starter Pack is scheduled for a September 23rd release, with the Disney pack set to follow on November 4th.

San Diego Comic Con played host to the latest Skylanders panel, featuring new details on the upcoming Trap Team. A questions that’s been asked since E3 is, if Trap Team won’t have any new Lightcore figures, (variants that would light up and feature different poses), but is planning to release about 50 new figures, how will they fill up that huge number? Will, it looks like we might have got our answer, thanks to Eon’s Elite.

Essentially reprints of select characters from the original game, Spyro’s Adventure, complete with the same poses as the figures that started it all, Eon’s Elite will consist of eight figures, each designed with metallic paint, a gold base, and a 3D background, which looks a lot like a themed screen behind the character. This premium line is likely to add even more incentive for collectors and gamers alike to open their wallets. Gotta buy ‘me all!

When in game, these variants will earn upgraded and grow three times as fast as regular characters, making them easier to level up again if you already maxed out the standard versions. Or you could just take advantage of the boosts they offer and plow through the enemies of Skylands! While Spyro and Chop Chop are the only two revealed so far, it’s almost a sure thing that fan favorites like Stealth Elf and Cynder will make the cut.

Love it or hate it, Skylanders continues to find ways to entice the kids, (and the kids at heart), to want to keep on collecting. But with current figures ranging between $9.99 and $15.99 at retail, even at the low end, a full Trap Team set will cost $500 on top of the game. Between this, Amiibos, and Disney Infinity 2.0 appealing to the Marvel fan in us, this is shaping up to be a very expensive holiday season.

Does anyone else plan in picking these up? While you mull that over, check out our E3 impressions of the game here, then check back for our first look at some of the new Trap Master characters that were on display.

In the latest of many trailers for the upcoming game, (including the Guardians of the Galaxy and Gravity Falls Power Disc reveals), Loki, Ronan The Accuser and Green Goblin have been revealed as the latest playable characters coming to Disney Infinity 2.0.

Using Loki’s magic, Ronan’s superior combat skills and Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs will now be possible in the game’s Toy Box mode, showing that heroes aren’t the only ones who get the spotlight. While it’s assumed that each character will be usable in their respective Play Sets as well, don’t expect Green Goblin to show up in Knowhere, or Loki invading Ultimate Spidey’s universe. As mentioned in the past, only certain heroes will be able to cross sets after certain collectables are retrieved, but at least we’ll get the chance to wreck havoc on the world. Just not all of it.

This should come as no surprise to fans of the first game, considering a villains pack consisting of Davy Jones, Randy and Syndrome was released when the game released. However, they were implemented a little sloppily, allowing Syndrome to fight himself during story missions with no mention of how it’s even possible. Hopefully, there will be some kind of recognition of this improbable scenario when the bad guys are plugged in. The small touches go a long way.

Are the villains coming home with you when the inevitable triple pack releases, or are the many figures already on the way too much off your wallet to take without them? Disney Infinity 2.0 will release as a standalone title, a Disney starter pack, a Marvel starter pack and a Playstation exclusive collectors edition on September 23rd.
