Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is a long game. I mean, a really long game. Thankfully, the title is worth the commitment. As one would expect from a remake of a Super Famicom RPG, Dragon Quest VII rocks it old school-style. We are talking level grinding, a huge world map, and lots and lots of turn-based battles.
n3ds_dragonquestvii_screen_12

I say “huge world map” but in the start of the game, the world is limited to a single island in a vast sea. As you continue on your sojourn back and forth through time, additional islands appear. The towns and dungeons housed on these islands are varied in theme and not a single one felt bland, visually at least. The game did however seem recycle the same several music tracks for towns and castles. For goodness’ sakes, there was a Middle Eastern-themed town that had the same music as the French village. It was disappointing when there was such a great opportunity for regional music variations.

n3ds_dragonquestvii_screen_05

n3ds_dq7_screen_01_bmp_jpgcopy

Battles in the game are not random, thankfully. Monsters are visible on the map and making contact with one will trigger a battle. I will say there have been many instances of monsters popping up where my character is standing, which was a bit of a surprise.

n3ds_dq7_screen_08_bmp_jpgcopy

Thanks to the Vocation system, in which you gain access to abilities and additional jobs through the completion of battles, I found myself  actually seeking out monsters to fight in hopes of increasing my mastery of a vocation. I loved that each vocation changed how your character looked, too. It was a small touch but added to the fun. Finding a mix of vocations for your party that fits your immediate needs may take some tweaking but it is a rewarding experience.

n3ds_dq7_screen_04_bmp_jpgcopy

3ds_dq7_janrpg_scrn_06w

The vehicle for your party’s previously-mentioned time travel are tablet pieces scattered across the world (hence the “Fragments of the Forgotten Past” subtitle) that when reassembled in the Shrine of Mysteries add a link to an undiscovered island’s past. Finding them isn’t hard for the most part, thanks to the a special Fragment Finder gifted to the main character that lights up the upper-left corner of the bottom Nintendo 3Ds screen when one is nearby. The closer your character is, the more rapidly it blinks.

One thing I was disappointed in was how long it took to unlock the much-advertised Monster Meadows feature of the game. You have access to the main hub area relatively early but it doesn’t begin to function until much, much later. I am talking about 40-plus hours into the game. It was frustrating that a feature so hyped on the game’s promo site remained unavailable for such a long stretch of time.

You do get the chance to experience one of the benefits of Monster Meadows, the Travelers’ Tablets, through the Download Bar at the Haven (available relatively early on) and by finding reformed monsters in towns you have visited. The Tablets received from the reformed monsters are on par difficulty-wise with the level of monster you currently face in the story. Nintendo’s DLC Tablets at the Download Bar, however, are substantially more difficult. I wouldn’t even bother with them until after you have access to the Vocation system.

In terms of Dragon Quest VII‘s level of difficulty, I would rank it on par with the majority of RPGs coming out these days. There are some trying battles that will require taking some time to level-up before challenging but on the whole, I didn’t find it too taxing. The only stressor was needing to find save points. For a portable game with long dungeon segments, there really should be a “save-anywhere” feature. You can, in theory, suspend your data temporarily with a “quick save” but the game limits the areas where you can perform that action.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past for the Nintendo 3DS gets a 4 put of 5. If you have the time to invest in the title, you will find a rich story with plenty to offer. Just don’t expect all the features to be available right away.

Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 feels familiar, but plays completely different to it’s  DX and original counterparts released 9 years ago. While some core mechanics have changed, it still results in an incredibly fun and addicting game that you won’t be putting down any time soon. Championship Edition 2 changes up some things to appeal to newcomers, but still retains what makes it so loved by gaming veterans.

pac-man-championship-edition-2

Championship 2 is split into 2 modes. Score attack mode is as you remember it from the original. It’s fast paced, heart pumping and dangerously addicting. Bandai Namco did however make a few tweaks to the formula so that there’s still a bit of a learning curve even for vets of the series. Ghosts aren’t an instant kill anymore, instead, depending on what difficulty you’re on, you can bump into them as many as 3 times before enraging them to chase you. Not only that, but ghosts will also flee in a certain pattern when you collect a power pellet. These changes allow for more risk taking, and while it may be harder to catch ghosts with the pellet now, it feels much more satisfying.

There are also other new additions such as Jump pads appearing on some courses that can shoot you horizontally or vertically across the field, or Fruit and Power Pellets that start running away from you at higher difficulties. This adds a great new layer of strategy for people already familiar with the Championship Edition formula as it gives them something new to learn

The other mode is Adventure Mode. While this may sound new, it’s nothing more than a name change as these are simply the time trial mazes now separated into their own mode. All you have to do is collect the required fruit before the time runs out. While fun and easy on lower settings, get ready to sweat bullets if you crank up the difficulty to pro mode, as you’ll have only seconds to beat the levels on top of trying to chase the aforementioned moving fruit and pellets. While t

Now, while this is just a fancy re-skin of the time trial mode, Adventure does add something new in the form of boss battles. At the end of worlds, if you’ve collected enough stars, you will be granted access to a boss fight in which you’ll go up against a giant ghost where the only way to defeat it is by collecting 1-ups and eating the runaway fruit. I found these levels very enjoyable and a nice change of pace as I continually planned out my strategy every time I’d have to try again.

Graphics in the game are very nice. Just like the original Championship games, you’re allowed to tweak the look of Pac-man, the ghosts, the mazes, and even the background and music. Everything from classic arcade to Pac Mania and even a few non Pac-Man surprises (some of them you might DIG.) Music is also superb as the game gives you some really nice techno remixes including a great remix of the main arcade theme that would perfectly fit right at home during a rave party.

If there’s really anything to complain about I guess it’d have to be that when you first boot up the game, it forces you into a mandatory tutorial to teach you the basics before it even lets you play. I can understand having it for newcomers and to introduce new mechanics, but it could have been handled better for people who just want to jump into the game. Maybe give them an option to skip it next time. Other than that, there’s not a lot to hate about the game.

tutorial

In conclusion, Pac-Man Championship Edition 2 successfully brings new players into the series while also giving long lasting fans something new to learn. The visuals and music are nice and crisp, while the level layouts are very expertly crafted. If this is your first time coming into the world of Championship Edition, then welcome to madness. For those returning though, Welcome back.

2 Years ago Jackbox Games released The Jackbox Party Pack onto the world. The game contained 5 unique multiplayer party games that made use of the person’s phone, tablet, or PC. One of those 5 games was a small little title called Drawful. The game consisted of players using their devices to draw (usually badly) images of a random odd word given to them. After that, the other players would get write what they think the picture looks like, resulting in them having to find the real title of the picture amongst a sea of false answers.

The game became a breakout hit, so it’s pretty inevitable that the game would get a sequel. Well, Drawful 2 is finally here for the masses to consume, but has Jackbox Games added enough to make the game stand on its own? Time to find out!

Drawful 2 Menu

The first thing you’ll notice when you boot up Drawful 2 is that you have 2 different options for gameplay now.  You still have the regular play drawful mode, but now due to an over abundance of suggestions, players are now finally able to create their own custom prompts using the brand new make your own game feature. This allows you to do just that, and it’s just as fun as it sounds. You can create entire custom episodes with custom names and prompts, and even share them online with other people. This is just one of the many great new social media features that really helps strengthen the game’s community.

Drawful 2 Custom

Custom prompts aren’t the only new thing to Drawful 2 though, as you can now draw not only with 1, but 2 different colors! This feature may have seemed a bit silly to talk about when the game was initially announced, but it really does make a big difference. Adding a 2nd color to the mix really helps keep the pictures from looking completely stagnant and helps add an extra layer of creativity onto the pictures.

Drawful 2 game

But wait! That’s not all. In tradition with making their games as stream friendly as possible, the game now includes a wealth of streaming options such as extended timers, twitch log in integration, and even the ability to censor unruly players and trolls trying to dampen the experience. Also going back to social media, one of the most surprisingly fun new additions is now being able to look at a gallery of all the drawings at the end of the game and being able to share them over Twitter (maybe make a future update that also allows people to post to Facebook also.)

Drawful 2 Censor

https://twitter.com/The_acz/status/745122946755133441

Now, even though I adore this game for all that it’s done right so far, there are sadly a couple of complaints.  These mainly have to do with the fact that I encountered multiple servers crashes and errors during my play time with the game. I’m confident that the team over at Jackbox is working hard to resolve these issues, and that most of them could have been due to a large amount of people trying to access the servers at once, but it was still enough to disrupt us enough to where I had to reset the game at one point in order to access the game again.

Drawful 2 Server

Conclusion:

Drawful 2 is yet another gut busting party game that’s sure to become a main stay during your family game night. The new social media and streaming features are a very welcome enjoyment, and the ability to use 2 colors as well as make your own custom prompts helps extend the overall replayability of the game as well as strengthen its community.  The only thing currently holding the game back right now is it’s inconsistent connection errors, but hopefully that’ll be getting fixed soon.

Final Rating: 4/5! Buy it!

When you distill all of the science fiction greats into a single strategic title, you end up with a fantastic science fantasy romp full of wonder and depth. Using their in-house engine the masters of history simulations (Paradox Interactive) have turned their eyes to the stars, crafting a deep, re-playable experience.

You create and control your very own space faring empire at its inception. You have a brave science ship and captain ready to survey the system and a fleet of corvettes to defend your home-world. From there the game feels open ended, forcing you to map the nearby cosmos for survival. You will quickly find alien species, some hostile, some not. And they may begin talking to you in a variety of ways, including shooting on sight.

ST5
The UI is full of lists and explainations

Leaders are named characters such as Scientists and Admirals that take up the important task of heading your fleets, research, armies, and planets. Over time they gain experience and die of old age and must be replaced. Given research, you can even have genetically superior leaders that are more expensive, but kind of worth it.

Planets are composed of tiles, some of which have blockers that you can remove with technology and resources. Population units eat food, spread, have their own political opinions, and are probably the most versatile use of population I’ve seen in a 4X title. Rather than being simply a statistic grown by food, they are entities that must subscribe to your empire wide policies.

Expansionist players will find the AI hating them on almost every difficulty however, the Federation and Alliance mechanics are designed as defensive measures between empires that don’t want to get smashed by said big expansionist player. Large empires over time suffer from ethical drift, unhappiness, and political factions causing mischief.

ST6
Discover interesting new races… like humans?

Every population unit has a political standing that initially is the state’s, but over time population units will adopt different stances. With the right technologies you can even build population units of simplistic robots, droids, and even self aware Synthetic beings given enough time. The farther away from your capital worlds, the more their ethics diverge from the state’s, which can eventually lead to factions of unhappy citizens demanding independence from your tyranny.

Despite the level of depth the exploration and early game portion of the game provides, the mid game tends to turn into a stagnant tech rush or made rush of expansion. There are several mechanics in place that limit this, such as a scaling tech malus for the amount of population units you have representing the difficulty of rolling tech out to the entire populace. Smaller empires have less scientific output, but as a consequence requires less of it as well.

ST1
Races are quickly created but full of deep possibilities

Technology is a card based system where there are three branches you research simultaneously. Cards have weight determined by your state ethics and your researchers traits; with awesome purple cards being the techs that really set your empire apart from the competition. After researching debris of fallen enemy ships you get the choice to research that tech out of order, allowing smaller empires to catch up through salvage.

Combat is based on fleets consisting of ships designed by the player; Corvettes, Destroyers, Cruisers, and Battleships are the four sizes, using increasingly larger amounts of logistics size in return for more space to load it with components. The ship design portion of the game is extremely important but is easy to use, the UI is clearly marked for players new to the genre. Despite each ships and ergo fleet being summed up by combat rating points, you can’t only look at the numbers. Many weapons excel against specific types of defenses and every weapon has range limitations. .

ST7
Early game fights consist of ramming the enemy with guns blazing

Speaking of range, let us now discuss stagnant but powerful Fallen Empires, whom have a single strict ethos and unique AI personality. They are more or less just going to sit there around their ring worlds until something pisses them off, such as a public insult. They will then go to war with you for the sole purpose of disgracing you in front of the universe. Their ships are highly advanced using a suite of tier 5 components, including larged sized Tachyon Lances that outrange practically every weapon of lesser quality allowing them to blast apart incoming fleets before they can be hit too hard themselves; it’s almost worth losing your entire fleet against them just to get the research topics if you can afford it!

Diplomacy as mentioned is an important game-play aspect, even though the AI is suspiciously timid on normal difficulty but fairly cranky on the higher difficulties. Alliances and their upgrade of Federations are typically sought by the AI as a defensive measure due to a mechanic called Threat. It’s essentially a way of the game telling you that if you continually absorb other empires, the rest of the universe will hate you. This leads to more militaristic players having to go on the initiative if they want war to be commonplace in their playthroughs.

ST4
What’s with advanced alien races and ring worlds?

So having hyped the good and the interesting let’s discuss the bad. The User Interface is huge, jam packed with buttons and statistics, and can look absolutely terrifying at first; you’re almost required to watch somebody else play it first. I found myself constantly bumbling through the menus looking for what I wanted to do, each tab has sub tabs and places you can scroll. It’s easy to not even know you can scroll in the tech windows, or even change your government (the button for it is cleverly disguised).

On larger galaxies (800-1000 stars) the game will very quickly become laggy and nigh unplayable on the fast and fastest speeds on computers that have a little age to them. The autosaving mechanic helps with this by saving at the latest every in game year (which speeds by regularly on fastest) adding to the lag. It’s advised you start with less AI opponents if you have a weaker computer, that’s what bogs your CPU down.

ST2
Discovering new races add their colored blob to the map

The game itself has a few bugs but nowhere near as many as you might expect of a new title. Slavery is effectively broken, the resulting unhappy slave faction cannot revolt at the moment and the Fallen Empire that hates Slavery currently does nothing about it. Exploration also needs some balance, as your science ships just sort of lose all purpose after a while. There are exploration quests but they only seem to occur once you are forced to fight other empires just so you can send a ship to it.

Stellaris is a quite stellar game with some issues, but many things it does fantastically. For one, multiplayer supports at least 32 players and since the game is real time you don’t really have to wait on anybody, which already makes it the best multiplayer mode any 4X has in my book. The game does a lot of interesting new things very well, including giving you the ability to play a strategy game without being obsessed about score and victory. You can zone out for quite some time without even realizing there are victory conditions, even though the two conditions are not really that interesting (both are essentially brute force conquer the universe goals).

ST8

I found the game quite fun and, would heavily recommend it to Strategy or Science Fiction fans!

We’re at it again Geekscapists! It’s giveaway time, the go around we’ve teamed up with AfterShokz to give you gamers a chance to get your hands on a pair of their Gamez bone conducting wireless headsets!

First, a little bit about AfterShokz and the Gamez headset.

AfterShokz has strived to bring bone conducting technology to lightweight headsets. They’ve prioritized situational awareness, safety and comfort in their designs. They’ve brought what they’ve created and are known for to the gaming market. Gamez headsets don’t actually sit ON your ears, but right in front of them. Two bone conducting transducers sit right on your cheekbone. They send vibrations through your cheekbone and into your inner ear, completely bypassing your ear drum. This means you aren’t shut out from what is around you (perfect for CS:GO LAN parties where making calls to the people in the room is essential), and gamers with hearing impairments aren’t kept away from the action. They also feature:

PremiumPitch+™ Stereo Sound: Bone conduction audio has earned its bad reputation due to a blend of natural sound leakage and weak bass. PremiumPitch+™ technology optimizes the sound and includes additional features like LeakSlayer™ technology, which ensures sound is directed exactly where it should be.

OpenFit™: A promise of uncompromised situational awareness and extended comfort due to our revolutionary open ear design. That means you can tune in to your games without tuning out the world around you.

Sweat Resistant: IP55 rated to repel sweat, moisture and dust.

Six Hours of Gaming and Calls: A single charge will reliably deliver six hours of game play and talk time. You can charge fully in 1.5 hours; a quick 15-minute charge provides enough boost to get you through a long gaming session or call.

Noise Canceling Mics: Precisely placed dual noise canceling microphones exclude surrounding noise, effectively enhancing speech when communicating with other gamers during game play.

Voice Prompts: Audrey Says™ seamlessly guide you through power, pair, play and talk, and everything in between.

Now, read below for what you’re really looking for (how to enter, of course):

Al that you need to do to enter is sign up using your email or Facebook login in the widget below, and then choose from multiple ways to gain ballots! The more you do, the better your chances, and you can even tweet once a day to maximize your entries! Nintendo’s famous mustachioed plumber has headlined so many games, I wouldn’t be able to list them all in one or two breaths. A share of those titles are role-playing games and the latest addition, Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam for the Nintendo 3DS, attempts to build on its predecessors by making use of new in-game mechanics as well as hardware functionality.

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_09

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_07

The game’s plot focuses on the aftermath of the citizens from the world of Paper Mario (another fine RPG series, not counting Super Star) being spread higgledy-piggledy throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. This, as you might imagine, causes some issues. Two-dimensional duplicates of baddies like Bowser and Kamek now run amok. Thankfully, they are joined by Paper Mario, Paper Peach, more Paper Toads than you can shake a glue stick at.

Piranha_Smash

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_NovemberDirect_SCRN_02_bmp_jpgcopy

With Paper Mario on your team, you have control of three characters rather than the usual two. This is all well and good for the overworld; Paper Mario’s flat frame can be manipulated to get around many of the obstacles created by the terrain. But in battle, it feels like too much.

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_01

In the Mario and Luigi series, battles are a very hands-on experience. Not only do you need to put in the correct button command when prompted on the screen (which buttons and such vary with each character) but you are expected to dodge/counter your enemies’ oncoming assaults. With just characters to manage, it was fine but with the addition of Paper Mario, keeping track of who is being targeted and when can be tough.

One new part of battles I did enjoy was the additional of the Battle Cards. You gain access to your first set a few hours into the game. Using the cards during an enemy encounter can cause effects like damage to certain enemies, boosting stats, or even increasing the rewards your reap post-battle.

The Battle Cards are also where the amiibo functionality is. When you use a special card item and then scan a compatible amiibo, you are granted a special Battle Card unique to the character the amiibo is based on. These Battle Cards cannot be obtained any other way. What I thought was nifty was that those special Battle Cards are stored on the amiibo, not the game save, and you can unlock more than one Battle Card per amiibo (24 to be exact). Simply scanning your desired amiibo during a battle will allow you access to the Battle Cards stored on it. The icing on the cake are the illustrations on these special cards. I only saw Yoshi’s and Bowser’s but, judging from those two, I can tell you that the card contain images from the entire range of the character’s history (note the Yarn Yoshi from Yoshi’s Woolly World along with Yoshi’s Island illustrations in the screenshot above).

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_NovemberDirect_SCRN_05_bmp_jpgcopy

Besides the issues with battles, the portions I liked the least were surrounding the giant papercraft. I can’t tell which part I disliked more: catching all those Paper Toads required to upgrade the thing or the actual battles. Actually, I take that back; it was the Toad part. Let’s take them one at a time. Rounding up the Paper Toads are set up as missions in the Lakitu Info Center. These quests are repetitive and just not fun. It would be one thing if they were “side quests” but they are obligatory.

And why do you need to collect a bunch of Paper Toads? To have them make these giant papercraft that your team fights with against Bowser’s own giant papercraft creation. They play like arena tank battles. Your attacks are charged by standing on a base and performing a little rhythm mini-game. Because that makes perfect sense. I don’t think I would have minded it as much as I did if they didn’t take so dang long. It takes several rounds to get to the Boss and even then, physical getting near the enemy takes a chunk of time. Papercraft Kamek’s teleporting especially drove me nuts.
3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_03

I give Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam a 3/5. It had with potential but ultimately fell flat. It isn’t a bad game by any means, but it could have been awesome had they left certain features out.

Note: This review is based on a promotional copy of the game provided by Nintendo.
