This year’s San Diego Comic-Con may be over, but that doesn’t mean coverage on it has to stop (seriously, we just saw so much). Last week, I had the chance of visiting the Xbox Gaming Lounge to spend some time with Rare’s new anniversary collection, Rare Replay. For those who don’t know, Rare Replay is a 30th anniversary title that celebrates the company’s 30 years of being in the industry. 30 years, 30 games, 30 dollars, what a deal, huh?

The game collection on this pack is massive, ranging from spectrum games like Jetpac and Sabreman, to some of their newest outings like Viva Piñata and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

Snake

The collection as a whole includes: Jet Pac , Atic Atac, Lunar Jetman, Sabre Wulf, UnderWurlde, Knight Lore, Gunfright, Slalom, R.C. Pro-Am, Cobra Triangle, Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, Digger T. Rock, Solar Jetman, Battletoads, , R.C. Pro-Am II, Battletoads Arcade, Killer Instinct Gold, Blast Corp, Banjo Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, Banjo Tooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Grabbed By The Ghoulies, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power, Viva Piñata, Jetpac Refueled, Viva Piñata: Trouble In Paradise, and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. It’s really quite the list.

For the sake of the demo, I only tried out Nuts & Bolts and Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, so other people would have a chance of trying the title out. Both games functioned as they should and were just as fun as when they came out. Although, the controls for Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll felt a little odd due to using a control stick on an isometric view. While Nuts & Bolts was fun for a first time playing it, the game was suffering from framerate issues in some areas, specifically when you’re in the main overworld, Showdown Town. They let me know that they were still working on debugging and fixing most of their 360 titles, so hopefully framerate issues on a far more powerful console won’t make it to the final release.

RareRevealed

Sure, the collection of games is amazing, but knowing Rare, they always love going one step beyond. Not only is the game collection only 1/3rd of the actual game, but there’s also 2 other fully fleshed out features in the title. This includes a snapshot challenge mode where you’re tasked with completing specific challenges from old games in order to earn stamps (infinite Battletoads turbo tunnel anyone). Once you’ve earned enough stamps, you’ll be able to access the last part of the game titled Rare Revealed, where you can access developer diaries and interviews.

All in all, Rare Replay is shaping up to be an amazing game and certainly one that Xbox One and Rare fans don’t want to miss out on. For Rare fans, it’s a must buy, and for non-Rare fans, this is the perfect time to jump in and see what this company is all about. Rare Replay will be released in North America August 4th, Japan August 6th, and the U.K August 7th.

Disney Interactive has announced that their upcoming Star Wars themed Toys to Life title, Disney Infinity 3.0, will hit stores on August 30th. Aside from the game itself, the studio plans to release close to a dozen new figures to go with it, so we hope the next month is enough time to get your cash together!

Aside from the Starter Pack, (which includes the Twilight of the Republic Play Set, Anakin Skywalker and Ashoka Tano,) day one will see the release of Yoda and Obi Wan Kenobi’s standalone figures, Kanan Jarrus, Ezra Bridger, Sabine Wren, and Zeb Orrelios from Star Wars Rebels, and a set of Star Wars Power Discs. Of course, if you want even more goodness from a galaxy far far away, Playstation owners can also purchase the Star Wars Saga Starter Pack, which gives them early access to Luke, Leia, the Twilight of the Empire Play Set, and Boba Fett.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Toy Box Screen 1

Outside of the Jedi, Disney won’t leave themselves in the dust. In addition, the Inside Out Play Set will release on day one as well, (which is bundled with Joy and Anger,) with Sadness, Disgust and Fear releasing as standalone toys. If you want your Toy Box characters outside of the Play Sets, Disney also has you covered with the releases of Mickey, Minnie, Mulan, Olaf, Sam Flynn and Quorra, alongside a Tomorrowland power disc pack to customize your Toy Box with.

I know, this is already a huge amount of toys to buy on day one, but the last release can be free of charge! If you pre-order, each person who does walks away with early access to the Toy Box Takeover, a multiplayer expansion normally priced at $19.99. Serving as an action adventure mode supporting 2 players locally and 4 players online, players will be able to take any toy from the previous or current game and travel across multiple Disney, Marvel and Star Wars worlds in their quest to stop Syndrome. Later this Fall, Toy Box Speedway, a Kart racing expansion, will also release, but you’ll have to pay for that one.

Toy Box Takeover

When Syndrome gets his hands on Merlin’s magic wand, it’s up to the player to stop him.  Using their favorite characters in Disney Infinity, they must battle across multiple worlds, such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Marvel’s Upper Manhattan, The Old West, or The Incredibles Volcano Lair to defeat the bad guys before they ruin the Toy Box forever. Players can complete missions with family and friends via two-player local co-op or four-player online.

Toy Box Speedway

Players can join their favorite Disney, Disney•Pixar, Marvel’s and Star Wars characters and vehicles in an action-packed kart-racer.  With nine franchise-themed tracks to choose from – Sugar Rush, Frozen, Tatooine, a classic Star Wars location, San Fransokyo, Agrabah, Monsters Inc., Halloween Town, Gravity Falls or Marvel’s Knowhere – they can choose from three different game modes including Time Trial mode, Race mode and Combat mode.   Players put their driving skills to the test as they attack opponents with gadgets and weapons and earn trophies across three challenge cups.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Toy Box Screen 3

We were lucky enough to try out the Play Sets and the Toy Box Speedway between E3 and Comic Con, which you’ll be able to read about really soon! Until then, let us know if Disney has you hooked and what content you’re planning on buying! And don’t forget, follow our Twitter feeds @geekscapedotnet and @geekscapegames to find out how to win a Darth Vader figure in advance!

Back when I played Resident Evil 2 for the first time, one of my favorite things to do after I finished the game was to run through the entire thing all over again in the alternate costumes that were unlocked for second runs. At a certain point, I’m pretty sure I developed a strange obsession with making Leon dress like a construction worker and find the right camera angles that would make his armpit hair visible, (which probably explains more about me than I’d care to admit.) Nonetheless, they were a simple, yet memorable way of extending the life of the game. After playing around with these new duds, I never thought gamers would get the chance to submit their own designs, but Capcom is giving us the chance to do just that with their Resident Evil 0 T-Shirt contest!

By heading over to the game’s site, would be designers can use the provided tools to create their own shirts for the game’s protagonist, Rebecca Chambers, to wear. Different voting tiers are opening up starting now, and lasting until the end of July for the first round. After all the rounds are done and the votes are tallied, the winning design will be included as a downloadable item when RE0 launches in 2016! Even if you don’t participate, everyone who votes will get the content for free when it launches.

Head over to the site and give it a shot, then head over here and share your spookiest designs with us! Killing zombies is easy, but being creative? That’s the most difficult task of all. Good luck!

What happens when two of the world’s most evil organizations join forces? We get a potentially awesome comic book!

Announced during Capcom’s Street Fighter V panel at Comic Con, IDW Publishing is releasing Street Fighter X GI Joe, a crossover event that brings together the Real American Heroes and the World Warriors. As the kind of stuff our Saturday mornings were made of back in the day, it’ll be interesting to see how well these worlds mesh together when the series is released in 2016.

While details are few, this sounds like an idea that’s crazy enough to work, (or at least give us a good laugh along the way.) Considering how well other comic crossovers have worked in the past though, I feel like this has a chance to surprise people throughout its run as much as the announcement surprised us in itself. Just imagine all of the wacky shenanigans a super powered dictator and an egotistical commander can get into together!

Will this series be on your radar? Let us know what you think!

In one of the least surprising announcements imaginable, Ken was revealed as the next fighter joining the cast of the upcoming Street Fighter V. As the only character aside from Ryu who has appeared in ever main line game, Ken is essentially known as American Karate guy, who gains a flaming uppercut and a few technical changes from his Japanese counterpart. Once the cocky martial artist actually appeared on screen though, dare I say something was actually different about the fighting game veteran!

At the Street Fighter V Comic Con panel, the Capcom-Unity team, (as well as SFIV’s project manager and SFV‘s executive producer, Yoshinori Ono,) promised us that Ken’s drastic change in appearance wasn’t the only aspect of the character that was getting an overhaul. For the first time in series history, the team promised that the fighter we affectionately know as “red Ryu” will be a completely unique character who uses powerful, “showstopping” attacks that helps players fight aggressively, (and look good doing it!) His unique V-Skill would further separate him from the rest of the shotokan fighters by adding flaming properties to all of his moves, allowing him to extend combos while gaining a quicker back step when it’s time to play defensively.

Street Fighter V Ken Screen 1

From the trailer alone, we can see that his Hurricane Kick has been retooled to go in a diagonal arc, and can even be converted into a type of dive kick from the air. While some of his old moves carry over, it’s easy to see that Ken stands out much more now than he has in the past, but does this promise carry over to the main game?

Watch the trailer for yourself and see what changes you can spot? And who is that mystery character at the end of the video? Let the speculation begin in the comments!

Note: This article contains thoughts and experiences from both myself and Eric Francisco. The builds we played were in the Alpha stage and were played on both PS3 and PC.

One of our personal highlights of this year’s SDCC was definitely Star Wars Battlefront. The title was available to play at NerdHQ and a couple of Geekscapists were able to get some extended hands-on time with the game.

Lots of things come to mind when the ‘Battlefront’ name is mentioned. One of the things that come to mind are the set pieces found in the past two iterations. They’re structured like an interactive Michael Bay movie, with huge, thrilling set pieces that are easy to follow through. Star Wars is the most recognizable blockbuster of all time, and let us tell you, ‘Battlefront’ does not disappoint.

‘Survival Mode’

The first mode we played was a co-op mission in which two players must survive an onslaught of Stormtrooper waves while completing sub-mission objectives. Players can choose whether or not to play the game in first or third person. One of us, I won’t say who *cough* Eric *cough* felt that the differences between first and third person were minimal at best. To switch, players must hold down the D-pad on the controller, but it only seemed to work half the time.

Regardless, the controls were easy to grasp, which is a good thing seeming that the last iteration of ‘Battlefront’ was over a decade ago (sorry if I just made you feel old). The gameplay feels natural to anyone easily familiar with shooters. Even if you’re not, it’s still got a pick-up-and-play accessibility, which is the ideal for a broad product as Star Wars is.

battlefront3

The gameplay feels solid, even though it’s in the alpha stage. We usually found ourselves playing in third person, as that’s what we got used to in the in past installments of the franchise. However, playing in first person seemed to be a little more challenging at times.

battlefront4

Upon starting the match, we were prompted to choose our primary weapons. Each weapon seemed to balanced according to the map and player behavior. For example, a Heavy Blaster is the equivalent to that of a shotgun, which will deal a ton of damage, but have a poor firing rate. Players who decided to use their jetpack to get right in the middle of a Stormtrooper squad should go for this. This level of thinking pre-match is reminiscent of the past Battlefront iterations in which we all had our favorite classes according to each map.

This particular map had cliffs and ramps up to higher passageways. Jetpacks were a must. The jetpacks in this game are different from traditional jetpacks that you’ll find in a game like Halo. Instead, think of this pack as a booster pack. It’ll propel you into the air in any direction you want to go, and it’s awesome. Players who pick up the jetpack’s use quickly will be able to get a decent advantage over unsuspecting players.

20 vs 20 ‘Walker Assault’

battlefront1

Unfortunately, Eric couldn’t join me for this 20 v 20 match as he had much better things to do. It’s okay. I didn’t let it bother me.

When I first heard about the AT-AT’s having a pre-destined path to walk along, I admit, I was a little upset. All it took was one match as the Rebels to realize how great of an idea it was. Walker’s are now not as invincible as they once were, but they are a terrible foe to come across. During 20v20 matches, the Rebel Alliance must find a way  to activate and protect satellites so that information can be sent to passing Y-Wings to essentially drop Ion bombs onto the walkers. Once this is done, the walkers will be temporarily disabled and vulnerable to any and all fire. It’s also a great time to get into a Snowspeeder and tie its legs up.

battlefront2

Fans who have witnessed the past E3 trailers have seen just how much action goes on in these multiplayer matches, and let me tell you, the E3 trailer is a pretty good representation of what you’ll be playing. While I did play on the keyboard and mouse, I found that the quicker players around me grasped the concept of being able to use abilities, such as the jetpack, personal shield, and ion shots, the better they faired on the battlefield. This was partially due to the terrain of the map, which seemed to be a character of its own. Players would routinely find cover in the oddest places, like behind an abandoned box, or even behind a small rock. Regardless, this made the experience even better. This meant that players must apply quick-thinking if they are to survive the trip to where the action is happening.

battlefront

Another major addition is the concept of using power-ups. These power-ups allow players, who get to the location and pick it up first, to use extra artillery. The power-ups I found ranged from a large team shield, to smart rockets perfect for AT-ST’s, and an airstrike.

Perhaps the only downside experienced was the lack of air vehicles around the map. It seemed as if there was a slight learning curve to piloting and no one wanted to take the time to figure it out. Regardless, the few X-Wing’s and Snowspeeder’s that made it into the air were briefly celebrated before the team watched them crash into the ground.

Overall, what little we saw of the game was more than enough to get really excited for the game. Star Wars: Battlefront is in every way playing out the battles you only dreamed of while playing with toys. It’s current-gen make-up not only make it look pleasing, but the technology lying underneath the hood makes Star Wars truly realized.

Star Wars: Battlefront is set to release November 17, 2015.

By now, hardcore fans everywhere have seen the videos. Warzone promises to be the next step into large-scale multiplayer combat. Before this, Halo‘s biggest multiplayer mode was Big Team Battle, which pit two teams of 8 against each other. Warzone is similar in concept, but it pushes out to be bigger than anything fans have experienced before. Warzone is everything you see; it’s new, it’s big, it’s fast, and it’s fun.

h5 warzone 4

From the time the match started, until the time it ended, I couldn’t help but think how fun this mode is going to be with friends. As you’ve previously seen, each game starts with retaking your base from enemies. In this particular map, the base is overrun by Prometheans. Surprisingly, these enemies aren’t as easy to take down as you’d think and I wholeheartedly prefer it this way. It’ll take your entire team to eliminate enemies in your base effectively and quick. But once your base is free and clear, you and your team are then thrust into the large map against an opposing team.

Halo 5 E3 Warzone 2

Throughout the match, each team is vying to reach 1,000 points before the other. Points are of course given when you kill the opposing team and capture bases placed around the map. Teams that are down by a ton of points should not be discouraged. If your team is able to rally, and if you are able to destroy the enemy’s core in their own base, your team will win the game.

h5 warzone 5

What makes Warzone stand out from previous Halo multiplayer modes is the inclusion of enemy AI, and not just at the start of the match. Throughout Warzone, players will also have to battle against more Promotheans, Covenant, and opposing team Marines. Marines will keep watch over captured bases and will communicate with each other in an attempt to take down enemy spartans. It usually doesn’t go well.

h5 warzone3

During the match, announcements will be made making players aware of the presence of enemy AI bosses. These bosses will sometimes spawn, near bases or even in vehicles. Taking them down will reward the assassin with a large sum of points. Because of this, the AI bosses will sometimes act as a nexus and attract a larger battle between the boss and his friends, red team, and blue team. I also noticed that no two matches are the same. The game will change according to how each player plays, reacts, and decides what they want to do. One player may focus on capturing bases while another may want to hunt down enemy AI to secure some big points. Some players may want to hang back and snipe while others may want to spend points on purchasing large vehicles and comb the map.

h5 warzone

As points are earned, players are also treated to a new requisition system. For those of you familiar with Gears of War‘s Beast Mode, this will be simple. Players accumulate points in which they can spend during the respond screen so that they are able to spawn with a variety of weapons. Essentially, you are spending points to create your own custom loadout in real time. This creates an added layer of strategic thinking. Depending on how the enemy team is playing, you may want to spend your points on certain weapons. However, points spending is not limited to just weapons.

h5 warzone2

Players will also be able to spend points on vehicles. The choice is always yours, and with team communication, one team can dominate another team with poor communication. One thing about Warzone that everyone needs to realize is that the match cannot be one by just a couple of spartans. It’s going to take the team. So far, Warzone looks to be the mode I’ll dive into right after campaign.

Halo 5: Guardians is set to release October 27th, 2015

All of us at Geekscape are getting back into our old routines like zombies after the party that was San Diego Comic-Con. Expect more stuff from that in the next few days. But there’s one thing we need to get to right now: If former G4TV host and Film Threat founder Chris Gore is to be believed, there are rumblings that G4TV could be making a comeback in a big way.

Yesterday on the last day of San Diego Comic-Con, I lost my Periscope virginity with Chris Gore at our Geekscape booth right in front of Legendary (I know every word of the Straight Outta Compton trailer by heart now) and he let slip that G4TV could be resurrected.

“I shouldn’t even be saying this, but yeah.”

It’s not long into the Periscope, maybe less than a minute, but somehow that divisive digital cable channel we know as G4TV, the one that caught the rising nerd wave early and, fortunately or unfortunately (I’m the latter) wiped out could come alive once again. You can see me freak out a little.

G4TV is why I got into this crazy business in the first place, so my visceral reaction is total excitement. Though the cable channel couldn’t compete against the Internet — as our own Jonathan London says, the Internet is G4 — it offered something mainstream TV still ignores. For all the cultural impact Marvel and DC and Star Wars and everything in between has now, there’s still no massive coverage of things like Comic-Con, E3, or even Star Wars Celebration. Scouring your favorite blog and stalking Twitter and Instagram is the new G4TV.

But I remember being a restless teenager watching that channel. It kept me sane during the summers I spent stuck at my aunt’s place in New York with no where else to go, thousands of miles away from Comic-Con and everything else they were at. It was like MTV’s Spring Break, but nerdier and kind of better. Yeah, the pandering kind of sucked, but the people that spoke for it were smart, charismatic individuals who (usually) cared about what they talked about.

Bethesda gave gamers a mini G4 reunion when Adam Sessler and Morgan Webb co-hosted Bethesda’s pre and post shows at this year’s E3. Watching those two again with chemistry that remained on point, their years separated showing no damage whatsoever, unleashed a flood of emotions. Memories came back of X-Play and other shenanigans those two maniacs and their equally insane production team did in front of cameras. It was wonderful and sublime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2KApp699WdE

The pitfall to a geek TV channel is that geeks barely watch TV on TV. They’re downloading and streaming. The culture is too big and too divided now to attract with one cable channel. They’d have to come back with a vengeance, cornering the Twitch-like streaming of live games and producing better, compelling, totally original content. No more COPS.

I don’t know much more to the story, Chris only told me a little and I can’t quite tell you guys what that little bit was. But there’s some hope, so if you care about G4 you’d have to tweet endlessly about it (because that’s how we do things #now). There’s no official hashtag or Kickstarter campaign, so it’s curious as to how whoever is trying to make this dark voodoo work is gauging interest.

I’m going to honestly ask: Would you watch a newly resurrected G4TV? I would.

Many tried and failed getting into Hall H this year. Fortunately, have pics and videos to make it feel as if you made it in!

The first highlight of the panel the introduction of Babajo!

Perhaps the best moment of the panel was when Harrison Ford was introduced to Hall H:

https://youtu.be/Aunc8v0VGF4

The panel didn’t shed much light on the film’s story, but you can get a behind the scenes look here. Still, the panel did not end with a reveal of The First Order’s headquarters: Starkiller Base. But before you leave, check out the gallery below!

At Comic Con 2015, Warner Bros. revealed their latest trailer for the upcoming spy thriller, The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Based on the 1960s television show, the film stars Superman, (Henry Cavill,) the Lone Ranger, (Armie Hammer,) and Alicia Vikander play a team of international spies during the heart of the Cold War. While the American and Russian are constantly at each other’s throats, the team must come together to tackle a mission with the fate of more than just their warring countries at stake.

The latest trailer gives an extended look at what we can expect from the upcoming action flick. As you’d expect, the car chases and explosions are plentiful, all set within a throwback time period. But more importantly, what is it with Brittish actors playing Americans so well? Cavill manages to fool us again!

What say you on The Man From U.N.C.L.E.? Is it currently on your summer viewing schedule when it releases in August? Watch the trailer below, then tell us what you’re excited about!

So Batfleck might not be so bad!

During Comic Con, the latest trailer for the upcoming Superman sequel, Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, showed us more of what to expect from the growing DC cinematic universe. What that means is more Superman, more Batman, being able to see Wonder Woman in action, and a very un-bald Lex Luthor.

It’s clear that the U.S. Government felt the same as most Man of Steel viewers when it came to its final battle, placing sole blame on Superman for the near destruction of Metropolis. Perhaps a bigger enemy to have than Washington is the goddamn Batman, who is known for not taking personal loss too well. After one of Wayne Enterprises’ buildings, (and likely hundreds of employees), became collateral damage during the showdown with Zod, Bruce is making it his personal mission to take the Kryptonian threat down.

There are way too many references to go over for one article, but it’s clear from the trailer that the team is working VERY hard to bring this seasoned, grief stricken Batman to life, all while planting the seeds for many of the biggest DC storylines that helped us fall in love with them in the first place. The mythos run deep here! And by the way, let’s just take a minute to acknowledge how badass Wonder Woman looks in this!

What references can you spot after watching the trailer below? Had your opinion changed over Ben Affleck as Batman yet? And what do you think of the direction of the film? Personally, I went from not caring at all, to being on edge over how this will play out. Mission accomplished, right?

Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice will release on March 25, 2016.

Briefly: I have to say, tonight’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel may have been worth the 24+ hour wait for Hall H.

Disney has officially released the 3+ minute featurette for the film that was shown during tonight’s panel, and if you’re one of those weird people that was on the fence about new Star Wars titles, the behind-the-scenes looks, and the incredible passion that emanates from everyone involved in the video should definitely raise your excitement. If it doesn’t, I’m really sorry, but there may be something wrong with you.

Incredibly, following the panel, JJ Abrams revealed that everyone in attendance would be escorted by Storm Troopers to a secret location where they would be treated to the music of Star Wars as performed by the San Diego Symphony. The concert concluded with an amazing fireworks display that was beyond impressive, even from my hotel window.

Not a bad reward for standing in line for over a day, huh?

Those of us that didn’t will have to settle for this still-awesome reel. Take a look below, and let us know what you think!

(better read with a British accent)

One of the brilliant things about San Diego Comic-Con is that it’s making life aces even if you’re not jammy enough to be there getting gobsmacked directly.

Sure, if you’re at the Con you can pick up the exclusive Doctor Who comic (covers’ art by Alice X. Zhang) and you’re likely jolly well delighted to be the first to get the scrummy scoop first-hand on the Whovian chapter of LEGO Dimensions. . . Let us pause to reflect on the trailer:

However, you’re no damp squib if you’re not arse over elbow with the makeuped and costumed in Southern California—you’ll just need a smidge of patience for your fix.

If, like me, you’ve been suffering doldrums waiting yonks for the good Doctor’s return to the telly then it may please you to hear the announcement out of SDCC 2015 that we only have to make it a bit further—September 19, Doctor Who returns! While the news of Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams’s appearance is now officially confirmed, showrunner Steven Moffat isn’t dropping much in the way of more clues. (Judging only by the cracking trailer, I’m going to guess she’s Zorro.)

Fancy a dekko at the series 9 trailer?—it’ll put the colour back in your cheeks.

Blinding! Not enough? Feast your hungry little skull orbs on these highlights from the panel. Pip pip now, off you pop.

It’s finally, finally here!

No, not SDCC, dummy. You’ll have to wait until Wednesday for that. I’m talking about the booth info and signing schedule for the Geekscape booth!

We’ve met so, so many of you over the years, and the greatest things about San Diego Comic-Con each year isn’t the panels, exclusives, celebrities, or parties, but honestly seeing ‘Scapists, new and old, at our booth, catching up, and really feeling the culture that we try all year to create. We always meet some new friends, gain a few writers, and all around have a good time, and that’s what Geekscape is all about.

There’s always a lot of new stuff going on at Geekscape. We’re about to launch a new design of the site, we’ve got some great new shorts up on GeekscapeTV (especially from our new correspondent El Chucho), and launched two new podcasts in the last year; Geekscape Games, the awesome yet unfortunately sporadic video game oriented podcast that I’m a co-host of, and the brand new Horror Movie Club podcast, which is, naturally, all about horror films.

Of course, we’ve got some pretty cool stuff going on at SDCC too. We’ll be in the same, familiar booth as last year, #3919 (right across from Legendary Entertainment), and have an awesome signing schedule which you can find below.

But that’s not all! Jonathan, of course, is the writer of Lion Forge Comics’ Miami Vice (and soon Super Action Man), and as such, he’ll be busy promoting the book as well!

There’s a Miami Vice 30th Anniversary Retrospective panel on Thursday from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in room 29AB. The panel will feature series creator Anthony Yerkovich and actors Edward James Olmos (“Lt. Castillo”), Michael Talbott (“Det. Switek”), and Olivia Brown (“Det. Joplin”), as well as Jonathan London and Lion Forge editor Shannon Eric Denton.

He’ll also partake in not one, but TWO signings at the Lion Forge booth (#2300). 4:00-5:00 on Thursday, and 11:00-1:30 on Friday, both with Michael Talbott (Stan Switek) and Olivia Brown (Trudy Joplin)!

If you’re an early riser, we’d also love to invite you to the very first Cosplay 5K! We encourage you to wear a costumer (to protect your identity, of course), and come out for a fun run (before the crowds) and some cool prizes!

5KWhat are you looking forward to at SDCC? Don’t forget to come by booth #3919 and let us know!

“We’re all nerd culture,” he says. “To me, ‘nerdy’ just means passionate. Back in the day, the stereotypical nerd was just passionate about things that maybe other people didn’t understand or get, like, science or science fiction … Now, everybody is into that, on some level.”

Talking to Zachary Levi is like talking to your best friend who just downed a Red Bull. He talks about passion, when he himself oozes an infectious enthusiasm. This fire has lit up enough for Levi realize some of his wildest dreams, dreams he admits he didn’t even realize he had. “That was never on the list,” he says regarding Nerd HQ, his off-site Comic-Con party where celebrities and fans can chill over music, drinks, and good vibes. It’s a choice opportunity to take sick Instagram photos and make your friends sitting at home jealous. It may not have been Zachary Levi’s dream, but it’s certainly someone’s. They shall not be named, not even if they’re the author of this piece.

In 2007, Zachary Levi landed the starring role in NBC’s Chuck. The action/comedy series generated a cult following in the face of low ratings, its legacy now in the same breath of shows like Community and Firefly. Inspired by the Comic-Con devoted and the surging nerd zeitgeist, Levi began Nerd HQ to make that growing con experience retain a bit of intimacy.

Last year Nerd HQ faced a bit of backlash when it attempted crowdfunding despite questionable rewards and vague intentions. The party raises funds for Operation Smile, and will again this year, but not even good will can shield you from the Internet’s bite.

With just days left until this year’s Comic-Con kicks off, I had a chance to speak to Zachary Levi about what attendees can expect this year at Nerd HQ, his observation of what’s happening in nerd culture, his role in the upcoming Heroes: Reborn, and sets the record straight on what happened last summer.

So Zachary, we’re heading into Comic-Con pretty fast. Are you excited? What’s going through your head, man?

Zachary: I’m excited anytime we’re able to get it back together again. It’s a pretty massive undertaking. It’s a big event. It requires a lot of time, energy, resources, money. Anytime we can get all those things together and we can make it actually materialize yet again, I’m happy about that.

I’m happy to just keep bringing people what they want. People are always hitting us up on Twitter and saying, “Are you going to do it again? We missed it, we want it.” I want to be able to tell them, years in advance, “Hey, of course. Consider us booked for ten years,” but it’s just always a crapshoot.

That’s exciting. The panelists, we have lined up already. We haven’t even locked in all of our panels, but the panels we have so far are awesome. I can’t wait to announce those soon and awesome partners. IGN is our media partner. They’re going to be streaming all of our panels, all of our interviews…

What do you have lined up?

Zachary: AMD is our tech partner, Sony is our gaming partner. In conjunction with AMD, we’re bringing Star Wars Battlefront.

Holy shit.

Zachary: Yeah dude, we have the first public playable demo.

Oh my God, that’s awesome.

Zachary: Yeah dude, I know. It’s so awesome.

So that’s locked and loaded.

Zachary: Yeah, we got to play it at E3 and it was so good. I was like, “Dude, I can’t wait for the public to actually get their hands on this, because it’s so dope.” It’s running around in the movies that we love, just like Battlefield. Yeah, it’s great.

So this is the fifth year that Nerd HQ will be around, correct?

Zachary: Year five, yeah.

In what ways has Nerd HQ lived up to your dreams or expectations?

Zachary: I would say that what I set out to do with HQ was just do things a little differently. I feel like if we all thought outside the box a little more and challenged certain things that we’re just handed … You look at a door. We all look at a door in the same way, but as soon as somebody goes, “Why don’t we just do it like this? Wouldn’t it open better or it would creak less or you could exit faster?”

Just kick it down.

Zachary: Kick it down! Right. Then, somebody actually does that, and then everybody goes, “Oh my God, why didn’t I think of that?” With HQ, I saw opportunities to make certain celebrity interactions with the public better and more interactive and more satisfying or more incentivized.

Do you think it’s because Comic-Con has gotten a little too crowded or a little too noisy? Is that why?

Zachary: Oh, no. Comic-Con’s got to do what Comic-Con’s got to do. That’s a logistical nightmare I don’t wish on anybody; 150,000 people coming… It’s gnarly, right? At the same time, I was looking at people sleeping on concrete, waiting to get in to a Chuck panel, overnight. I’m like, “Man, how do we not do that? How do we make sure that everyone who’s actually in a ballroom or a hall is actually there for that panel and not just sitting on a seat waiting for another panel? How do you do that? How do you raise money for charity?”

I believe in what I call “conscientious capitalism,” where we, as The Nerd Machine, can sell merch and make money and hopefully make them some money from sponsorship or whatever. We can also help raise a bunch of money and give a bunch of money at the same time.

That’s why all the celebrity interactions, I didn’t want to make any money on. There’s plenty of conventions to go make money doing signings, but as far as HQ is concerned I wanted to create an opportunity where, we, in this celebrity world, could interact with our fans in just really pure, fun ways, that we’re still very protected, very safe, but very organic and off the cuff. That’s why the panels are unmoderated and fans just get to ask questions for an hour, because they never really get that opportunity.

Then, every time there’s any kind of interaction, you monetize it, so that it’s actually got some worth. You can’t just have people barging in and queuing up for hours, because then that starts creating lines again. You say, “It costs 20 bucks.” Twenty bucks, to me, was a perfect … It’s one bill. It’s 20 bucks a seat for a panel or 20 bucks for a photo or 20 bucks for a signing.

Maybe one day, maybe even next year, we’re going to have to raise that price, because there is so many people now and we only have such limited space. Maybe people can afford $40 for a seat at a panel, I don’t know. I just wanted to make something that was affordable, but still meant something, and that we could all come together and do something that was bigger than all of us and that’s why the non-profit angle came in.

Are you teaming up with Operation Smile again this year?

Zachary: Definitely Operation Smile, but that said, because our venue is the new children’s museum, they’re a non-profit in themselves. We’re also helping to raise money for the new children’s museum by renting out that space, so it’s even better. It’s made it even sweeter on the whole non-profit world.

Last year there was a bit of controversy with Nerd HQ’s funding efforts. What happened in the past year? What changed?

Zachary: Yeah, man, it was really unfortunate, but I think some people didn’t understand and I think there was actually some people, if I’m being perfectly honest, who are Nerd Machine/Nerd HQ haters and were waiting for an opportunity to spin something on us to drag us down, to pull us down.

It was such a bummer. It broke my heart… You can’t please everybody and I tried. There was one article that was written about it, I can’t remember the gentleman’s name, but he was lambasting us saying that we wanted people to give us money so we could have a private celebrity party for a million dollars. I was like, “That is not even close to the truth. You clearly did not look at our website. You clearly do not understand what we’re doing.” I reached out to him. I said, “Hey, man, can we talk about this? I don’t think you understand what’s going on.” He never got back to me. I’m like, “Okay, you don’t really want to know the truth. You just want to be a hater. You just want to tear people down.” That’s really unfortunate.

The reason why we even did that, and this is something I tried to explain in the crowdfunding campaign was, every year, we try to get the events sponsored. Every year, we essentially succeeded, while losing a little bit of money here and there, because it’s just a really expensive thing to do. In the beginning years, a lot of sponsors were like, “What is this? We don’t know what it is. It’s not really tried and true,” so it’s typical to get a lot of money out of them, but you try to get as much as you can.

The way the whole financial situation breaks down is these big companies, it takes a long time to actually get paid by them. They’re committed to so many other events leading up to Comic-Con. They’ve got money invested into E3 and CES and South by Southwest and so many things and so they’re all like, “We’ll get there, when we get there.”

There’s a whole giant production budget: lights and sound and booths and furniture. It’s a lot of stuff that you need to pay for, but you need to pay for that up front or at least put deposits on it. What was happening, was I was essentially having to fund it all myself, out of my pocket, and then pay myself back, when we get sponsorship dollars in. For the most part, that was working. Again, we’d lose a little money here and there, but to me, it was an investment into the future.

Then, the third year, our first year at Petco… We had an oral agreement with a sponsor for a lot of money and at the last second, they pulled out. I had already spent a bunch of my own money. Then, I was in this predicament where it’s like, we either fold up shop, we cut our losses and we’ll probably never do HQ and maybe have to close the doors on Nerd Machine, because it was that big of a momentum shift, or I just double-down and I say “Whatever, it’s money. It’s a lot of it and I’m really not stoked to have to lose it, but I believe in HQ and I believe in the happiness that it brings people and the impact that it has on people’s lives, not just the non-profit stuff.”

That was a huge thing, too. It was like, “If we don’t HQ at this point, we’re going to not raise $250,000 for kids who really need it, but also, we’re not bringing the smiles to the public and to the celebrities that are coming down and have those moments.” They’re moments that last a lifetime.

Those moments are that important.

I get people that tell me, to this day, the most incredible memories that they have of being in San Diego at that time are being at one of our dance parties, that we have, by the way, for the public and for private. We don’t just throw private parties. It’s not just me hanging out with my celebrity buddies.

The panels, for fans to be able to have that kind of access to ask whatever they want for an hour of Tom Hiddleston or Joss Whedon and then for Tom to have the ability to really have time to answer a question, to get into the depth of a role that he’s done or why he’s done them or the really silly stuff, like when somebody said, “Hey, I saw you do a velociraptor impersonation online. Would you do that?” and he goes, “Yeah,” and he just does it. It’s so funny.

That doesn’t exist anywhere else. I’ve never seen places where that type of magic happens. I think it’s a very specific formula. You have to allow for enough structure where it’s safe, but not so much structure that it’s confining and where people feel like they can’t do just whatever … I wanted there to be a off-the-cuff enough feel and setting where you could do whatever, as long as it’s respectful and kind and that’s what it’s been every year.

Giving fans the freedom to ask what they want, not one fan has ever asked any panelist something that was rude … or disrespectful. Everyone is so cool, because they also feel like, “Wow, we’re being thought of. We’re being taken care of. We want this to keep going.”

There’s no question what you’ve done with fan and geek culture. Do you ever stop to think or take stock? Like, “Oh my God, I was able to do that?

Zachary: Every once and a while, I do. Every once and a while, I go, “Wow…”

“I was in Tomb Raider!”

Zachary: Yeah, but I don’t know, it’s weird. I’m always looking forward. I think it’s awesome that they made a character of me for multiplayer in Tomb Raider, that’s so much fun, but no, I didn’t … When I was a kid, I don’t know that I ever thought, “Oh, that’s a goal,” or certainly didn’t think, “Oh, I’m going to create my own convention.” That was never on the list.

I’ve always definitely had a entrepreneurial and philanthropic side to me, so I’ve always had ideas of different things. Then, when ideas come to me, I vet them in my own mind, I think about them a lot and I go, “You know what? I think this would work. I want to go try this, I think people would dig this.”

That’s where HQ came from and then people did, they believed in it on both sides, the public and celebrities. It’s just really cool to see something come together like that. It’s still a battle. There’s still a lot of things that surround putting the event on every year. It’s still a battle and I just don’t want it to be a battle anymore. I just want it to be good and to happen and people to know it and enjoy it.

The trailer for Heroes: Reborn dropped just a little while ago, and I’m so, so excited. What’s it like to be on the revival? Can you tell us a little about your character?

Zachary: Yeah, it’s great, man. We’re still doing it, by the way. We’re only about half-way through. When I was doing Chuck, we were on the same night with Heroes and I knew all those kids. I say “kids,” playfully. Obviously, they’re older than I am …  but I got to know them. I love them, I think they’re such incredible people and so talented.

As much fun as I was having on Chuck, I was always a little envious of the sandbox they got to play in, because I was like, “Dude, you fly and shit. That’s amazing.” When this came back around or when Heroes: Reborn was announced, I was looking for what my next gig would be. I love a mini-series. When you’re weighing the idea of committing to a full series, that’s three, seven years of your life. With a mini-series, it’s going to be about five months.

I loved the world of it, so I went to my team. I said, “Hey, let’s go track this down.” I ended up talking to Tim Kring a couple times and he was telling me about it. I was telling him, “Hey, look, if nothing else, I just don’t want to play Chuck again. I want to play something that’s very different, a departure.” He pitched me this role of Luke Collins.

Luke is married to Joanne Collins, played by Judi Shekoni. We, essentially, are greatly affected by this event that happens four years after the end of the original series. When everyone finds out there’s people with powers, four years after that, there’s this incident in Odessa, Texas.

It’s considered a terrorist attack of sorts, many people die, and we are personally affected by it. The world believes that who’s behind it are people with abilities. We take it upon ourselves to do what we think is the right thing to do to make the world a safer place, which is to kill people with powers, with abilities.

Holy shit.

Zachary: Yeah, it’s dark, man. It’s dark and twisted and tortured. There’s a lot of soul-searching and journey with these characters along the way. It’s pretty intense. It’s full-on. It’s been weird, it’s definitely the darkest I’ve ever had to go with a character. It’s very draining sometimes. You’re like, “Wow, to keep this up, I don’t know that I could even do it for another year if I had to stay in that mindframe.” It’s intense.

So, definitely a departure from Chuck?

Zachary: Oh, yeah.

You’re clearly a passionate geek and you’re all in the Comic-Con culture hardcore. You’ve seen geek culture change from kids getting stuffed in lockers to The Avengers making so much money at the box office. What do you think about geek culture now? Does it surprise you or did you see this coming?

Zachary: Yeah, I think there’s a lot of things that contribute to that. One, is we have definitely shifted as a society … so many more jobs nowadays are less about physical ability and more about mental ability. We live in a digital age, whereas, you might’ve been coming up as a kid and your dad worked in a coal mine and now you’re working in the coal mine. That’s a really quote/unquote “manly,” brawny thing to do.

Now, a lot of kids come up playing video games. It’s a typical thing. It’s a typical thing that kids all know how to use the computer. It’s a typical thing that you’re now inundated with entertainment because special effects have gotten so good, that we’d all go watch a movie like Avengers, because those movies can be made now and they can be made really well.

That’s brought something that was maybe more exclusively quote/unquote “nerd culture” or “geek culture” into the mainstream and people who only loved Iron Man in comic books, who were the maybe nerdier kids, now, everybody likes Iron Man because Robert Downey Jr. is a bad-ass and been in really cool movies and you go, “Awesome.”

One of the things I wanted to do with Nerd Machine was create a lifestyle brand for nerd culture, but simultaneously, tell everyone, “We’re all nerd culture.” To me, “nerdy” just means passionate. It just means you’re passionate about something. Back in the day, the stereotypical nerd was just passionate about things that maybe other people didn’t understand or get, like, science or science fiction or comic books or video games or whatever. Now, everybody is into that, on some level.

That means, A, that stuff that was stereotypically nerdy, now everyone understands, and then, B, even if you’re not, you’re still passionate about something. You’re passionate about basketball. You’re passionate about fashion. You’re passionate about food. You’re passionate about travel. You’re a travel nerd. You’re a food nerd. You’re a sports nerd. Yeah, everyone’s a nerd about something.

That’s been one of our big mantras. I really do want people to embrace that messaging, because that’s, ultimately, what’s going to break down so many barriers and stigmas. What’s really fascinating to me is the almost reverse discrimination that I’ve seen come out of the stereotypical nerd culture. It’s very strange.

There was a galvanization of the quote/unquote “nerds,” because they all found something they really liked and they appreciated it and there was freedom in that and people going down to Comic-Con and cosplaying and not being judged for it. That’s great. So much of it was rooted in not judging other people and finding a place where you’re not judged.

Then, all of a sudden, a cute girl who might not have been into the comic books, but all of a sudden watched Avengers is like, “Oh my God, I think Black Widow is awesome,” and “Holy crap, I can go dress up like Black Widow and go down to this place, like Comic-Con? I’m going to go do that.” Then, all of a sudden, the people who consider themselves the “true nerds,” they start judging that new girl, because, “What do you know about Black Widow? What do you know about Avengers?” It’s like, “Whoa, shouldn’t you just be stoked that there’s a new convert of somebody …

Just accept that someone’s into it?

Zachary: Yeah, it’s weird and crazy. I think that there’s this weird backlash, because they feel like they were ridiculed for so long and now it’s theirs and it can only be theirs. They get to be the “cool kids,” almost. I’m like, “Guys, this is so antithetical to what being an original OG nerd was even about. You should be so stoked that people finally get you and get what you were about and what you were passionate about. Embrace other people, isn’t that what you always wanted?”

Isn’t that what we always wanted? We wanted to be able to talk to about the Legend of Zelda without people going “Nerd alert,” because, guess what? Now we can. It’s just fascinating to me. I’m so happy that stuff is becoming mainstream, but at the same time, I’m witnessing this discrimination. It’s a bummer.

Last words, man. Is there anything else you look forward to this year at Nerd HQ?

Zachary: Oh, man, it’s the same stuff we do. Battlefront‘s huge. We’re so stoked out. We’re going to have Project Morpheus as well.

Project Morpheus? Really?

Zachary: Yeah, dude, totally, and we’re going to have dance parties open to the public both Thursday and Saturday night. Friday night’s the big nerd party. That’s the big box party that’s out and everybody in town, panels all day, every day. We’re going to have awesome food, awesome drinks, charging stations, like we’ve always had. You can come in, charge your shit up, you can do that.

Again, other than the celebrity interactions, everything is free. You don’t need a badge, you can just walk right in. You get an RFID bracelet. You register. You can go into the photo booth, take pictures, it’ll automatically send them to your email address.

We got the new app, you can go download that, the Nerd HQ app. Yeah, man, it’s all that groovy stuff.

Dude, I can’t wait and I hope to see you there. Thank you so much for your time.

Zachary: Right back at you, brother.

He’s finally said it. People have debated, fought, angrily yelled at each other for years, and all it took was one fan approaching a microphone and asking.

Tonight at Wizard World Philadelphia, a fan walked up to the microphone and asked him a simple question, after admitting to hours of arguing with friends, on Facebook and even on discussion websites.

“In Sixth Sense, did Cole know Bruce Willis’ character was a ghost from the start?”

Without even hesitating, Shyamalan simply said straight-forwardly, solidly, without a doubt, a resounding “Yes! Of course!”

Wizard World Comic Con is starting up tomorrow in Philadelphia, and tonight was the press event, held at the always-classy Hard Rock Cafe. Such a fitting place to kick off the Philadelphia visit of so many famous actors, writers, artists and more.

The weekend started with Lou Ferrigno (The Hulk), Vincent Young (Beverly Hills 90210), and Chris 51 (Epic Ink). What an event! They had a Q&A with fans and everyone had a blast.

Some of the big events this weekend include Hayley Atwell and a panel on Agent Carter, David Tennant and Billie Piper doing a whole Doctor Who weekend, Katie Cassidy and Stephen Amell from Arrow, and so many more.

The one I’m most looking forward to, besides the Agent Carter panel, is M. Night Shyamalan’s Q&A and sneak preview of the first episode of Wayward Pines.

Keep checking back this weekend and throughout the next week for more from Wizard World in Philadelphia.

Briefly: Well this is cool. It seems like California gets all of the best Comic Conventions.

This one is put together by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and his pal Stan Lee helped him announce it:

The convention aims to “celebrates the Age of the Geek by bringing together America’s two greatest superheroes: pop culture and technology.”

Here’s the announcement message from Woz:

Hi Everyone,

I’m excited to be launching Silicon Valley Comic Con today! I’m traveling and speaking so I can’t take lots of calls, so I wanted to post this memo for you.

I’m teaming up with friends to make this happen because I want to give Silicon Valley it’s very own kind of Comic Con where everyone can have fun enjoying what they love. Today we’re lucky to have so many kinds of entertainment, from movies, TV shows, web series, music, video games, social media and more, and the lines between entertainment and the technology we love so much in Silicon Valley are getting blurrier every day. We’re going to create a place where all these different kinds of interests can come together, and we can come together too.

There are lots of fans like me in San Francisco and the Valley, and I’m excited that now we’ll have a Comic Con with our very own flavor. When I was growing up, it was hard to be a geek. It definitely wasn’t cool, and that wasn’t easy. I’m happy things have changed because now people are able to be proud of being geeks and being different. Silicon Valley Comic Con will be an event where fans of all kinds can celebrate the Age of the Geek.

I’m going to be working with lots of great people to make this happen. I hope you watch the video my friend Stan Lee and I had fun making together, and I’ll be making more along the way. I’ve also got entertainment industry veteran John Alcantar on board to help us create our very own kind of Comic Con for Silicon Valley in 2016. John will help us pull the team together, and we’ll even be looking for help from volunteers to help create an event we can all be proud of. Stay tuned for more!

I hope I’ll see you in San Jose next year March 19-20. It’s going to be amazing!

Woz

Will you be attending?

Briefly: Goosebumps was an absolutely massive part of my childhood. I still recall researching and looking forward to every new book release, and ordering whenever possible from my school’s monthly Scholastic Book Order.

As you probably know (and as we totally covered back at SDCC), a Goosebumps feature film is finally set to release in August of next year. To celebrate, and because it’s totally October, “R.L. Stine will host his third Scholastic social media takeover on Thursday, October 30. And to further bewitch fans, Scholastic will unleash a revamped Goosebumps website, social media pages and brand-new book as well as host a special event featuring R.L. Stine at The Scholastic Store in Manhattan, and more!”

I’m down.

Here’s what’s happening:

– On October 30 from 2-3:30pm EST, R.L. Stine will be “trick or tweeting” with fans through social media in a can’t-miss live chat. Stine will share jokes, trivia, videos and images, plus answer questions from participants, who will also have a chance to win collectible Goosebumps prizes. Creatures from coast-to-coast can join in the conversation by using #31DaysofGoosebumps to post on the Scholastic accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and Instagram, or via the Goosebumps Facebook page and newly-launched Goosebumps Tumblr, Twitter and Instagram feeds. It’s sure to be a scream!

Additional ways for fans to get Goosebumps:

-Online: Fans can visit the interactive new mobile-friendly Goosebumps website, www.scholastic.com/goosebumps, to play engaging games and activities such as “Monster Blood” and “Which Monster Are You?”; check-out the author events calendar and news spotlight; discuss all things Goosebumps in a community forum; and review a full list of books and TV episodes, so they’ll be sure never to miss a new title or show!

-In New York City: R.L. Stine himself will treat kids and families to a Halloween-themed afternoon, as he reads and signs some of the best-loved Goosebumps books at The Scholastic Store on Saturday, October 18, at 2pm EST!
With a new book: Young monsters can sink their teeth into “12 Screams of Christmas,” a special edition book and the latest title in the Goosebumps: Most Wanted series that follows the brand’s most infamous characters!
Through iTunes and Netflix: Families can now catch all 74 edge-of-your-seat Goosebumps episodes on iTunes and Netflix, this Halloween and anytime!

-On TV: Kids can tune-in to the Goosebumps TV series for ghastly laughs on The Hub Network!

And things will get even spookier in Times Square, when R.L.Stine and Scholastic Media President Deborah Forte ring the bell for the close of the NASDAQ stock market on Halloween, Friday, October 31, at 4pm EST.

I can’t wait to see more from the Goosebumps film, an I think I’m probably overdue for a Netflix binge. Are you looking forward to the film? Sound out below!

Obviously we’ve been big fans of Sean Astin for years. Goonies, Rudy, TMNT, The Lord of the Rings and now The Strain have made us all lifelong fans. But there’s a lot about Sean that you may not know, like how active he is in politics and that he’s an avid runner. Well, you’re going to know all that now as he guests on the show and tells us about his conflicted character on The Strain, stepping barefoot into Middle Earth, being involved in politics and his talk show Vox Populi and whether or not he can keep pace with me as a distance runner (he can)! I think you’ll find him to be everything you expected: a smart, thoughtful guy who is passionate about everything he does. I loved having him on the show!

While at San Diego Comic-Con, I was able to attend a cool event at the Chuck Jones Gallery co-hosted by GirlsDrawinGirls and 6-Point Harness (6PH). Their art was featured during a special “What’s Up Doc?”, a Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service museum exhibit. After the event, I was able to interview Melody Severns, one of the co-creators of GirlsDrawinGirls.

So what exactly is GirlsDrawinGirls?

GirlsDrawinGirls is an international group of around 200 women artists who draw pin up art to showcase the vast amount of female talent working professionally in the animation, film, comics, and illustration industry.  We draw pin up art as a way to give our take on femininity and sexuality from a woman’s point of view.  Together we have inspired each other, given each other positive and constructive feedback, and promoted a strong support system of women working in the same field.  Since the birth of the group, we have been featured in Italian Vogue, did an art show at Galerie Arludik in Paris, France, and worked with the Chuck Jones Gallery for a show during the 2014 San Diego Comic Con.

How did it get started?

GirlsDrawinGirls started as the brainchild of me and my friend, Anne Walker Farrell as a way to get all the talented women we knew in animation together on a fun project.  Both of us were college friends and went to art school together at The Laguna College of Art and Design.  When we got out into the industry, we realized that there were very few women directors, and also a fewer presence of women who draw pin up art of women at conventions, like Comic-Con.  We got about 18 of our collaborative friends together to create our very first book, “GirlsDrawinGirls, vol. 1: A Girl in Time”, and since then, this group has gained momentum and has snowballed into an international movement.

Was there a particular moment that sparked your need to create GirlsDrawinGirls?

I don’t know if there was a particular moment, I think it was more like “moments”, but I can give you an early example of who I’ve become today.  Growing up, I was always a kid that liked to do things my own way.  I would play “Batman” with the neighborhood kids, insist on being Catwoman, and I would also insist that Catwoman was more powerful than Batman, and I had all the reasons why.  I just never thought that women should be considered less qualified than a man, if they were indeed intelligent, strong, and confident.  As I got into my career, I noticed that there were so many tremendously talented women I knew that could draw circles around the best of them.  I figured I could take characteristics from the part of me that was the child that wouldn’t take no for an answer about Catwomen being cooler than Batman and use it to show that women can be just as good, if not better than anyone else in the industry.

Why pin-up?

I think pin-up is a great way to give women a voice in how they want to represent their own sexuality.  There is nothing wrong with women being sexual, and there is nothing wrong with embracing that side of oneself.  It is empowering.

How would you describe your personal style?

I have a very cartoony style.  I come from an animation background, so I tend to draw women realistically, with some cartoon/comic tones.  I also have grown to love watercolors and I try to use them for personal art as much as I can.

How long have you been an artist?

I have been an artist for as long as I can remember.  My grandfather was an animator for Disney back in the days of Bambi and Cinderella.  He was always a huge inspiration for me.  My family never discouraged me from pursuing my artistic endeavors, so I am tremendously grateful for that.  My grandfather has since passed away, so there’s always a part of me that continues to push myself in the hopes that I would have made him proud.

As a female artist, do you feel you are judged differently than your male counterparts?

This is a tough question, because in no way do I feel negatively or disrespect from the great men that I have in my life, or have met in my career.  That being said, I do think there is a general stigma that women should feel bad about drawing anything that depicts sexuality, especially female sexuality, which is absurd.  There is also sometimes a stigma in the industry that women in a position of authority can be taken as a “bitch”, and a man in a position of authority is just a strong go getter.  I think it’s time to change all of this.  These are archaic beliefs that need to be changed.  GirlsDrawinGirls seeks to be the positive counterpart to outdated beliefs.

There is a wonderful variety in style amongst the GirlsDrawinGirls artists. What do you look for when women want to join?

I basically just look to see if there is a general strong idea of form, anatomy, style, and structure.  I love that we have a variety of styles, and I hope that we continue on that trend.  Having many voices makes us better and more interesting.

Any advice to women artists out there?

My advice is to learn as much as you can and to always improve.  Never take criticism personally.  Always grow, and always be up for adapting.  Never take failure personally.  Failure is actually a part of success.  Some of the best people in the world have had to experience rejection.  What makes them stand out from the crowd is the ability to endure.  Always endure, you are stronger than you could ever imagine.

GirlsDrawinGirls had a fun event at the Chuck Jones Gallery at Comic-Con. Can you please tell me how that event came about?

A good friend of mine introduced me to the fine folks at the Chuck Jones Gallery.  I was so honored and thrilled that they were interested in working with me and my group.  Chuck Jones has always been a strong inspiration of mine and his daughter, Linda Jones Clough wrote the foreword for GDG’s fourth book.  It was a privilege to work with such animation royalty who are also genuinely wonderful people.  I look forward to working with them more in the future!

How do you think the event went?

I could not be more pleased with the evening.  People were excited not only about the art of GirlsDrawinGirls, but also with the art of Chuck Jones.  It was so fun talking to fans and supporters of both GirlsDrawinGirls and The Chuck Jones Gallery.  It definitely made this year’s Comic-Con my favorite that I have ever been a part of (and I have been a part of a few!)

GirlsDrawinGirls

What was your favorite part of that evening?

One of my favorite parts was being able to talk to the crowd about how I met Chuck Jones during his last public speaking event when I was in college.  I shook his hand and was able to hear a legend talk.  I found out earlier that day, as I spoke to this daughter, Linda at a signing at the GirlsDrawinGirls booth that he was sick during that time, but the excitement that he got from inspiring young people made him happy, eager, and full of energy.  I never knew that not only was that a big moment for me in my life, but it was also a big moment for him and his family.  That experience was none other than a blessing that I was fortunate to have.

What is next for GirlsDrawinGirls?

Coming up in October, we have a solo art show of one of our featured artists, Ashley Brooke Cooper at the historic Egyptian Theater in Hollywood, California.  It will be during the 80th anniversary premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s film, “Cleopatra” and all of Ashley’s art will be celebrating ancient Egyptian women.  In the grander scheme of things, GirlsDrawinGirls is looking to branch out more internationally.  We have created a Canada chapter and are looking at doing more international shows in the future.  We want to take on the world!

What is next for you?

I am currently working as an animation producer, so I am excited to see where that path takes me.  I also want to continue with my path of leading GirlsDrawinGirls.  The group’s name is bigger and more recognized than my own, and I consider that a success.  This movement is bigger than me, and is about empowering women as a whole.  I am honored to be the spokeswoman for it.

My body is probably still recovering from San Diego Comic-Con (I know that my mind still is), and I’m really excited to today share a couple of the offsite events that I was able to partake in.

Right across from the convention centre (where the Ender’s Game event was located last year) was Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Experience. The parkour-styled (for babies like me of course) obstacle course was designed to let attendees experience some of the moves from the Assassin’s Creed series, without having to find their own Animus and become an actual assassin.

Before the event, the company released a great breakdown of the course. Take a look below:

Now, this event was busy. I showed up about an hour and a half before the event opened on Sunday… and the lineup was huge. Luckily, and awesome event employee named Paul helped me figure things out, and I actually ended up being the very first runner of the day.

As you can see in the video below, the actual obstacle course itself wasn’t too hard (except for the rings, which are a lot harder than they look), but my time was certainly nothing to write home about. Participants could request to compete for top time of the day to win some cool prizes, and the best time of the event was just over 20 seconds.

Like I said, the course wasn’t hard, but the leap of faith was pretty terrifying. I didn’t think that 25 feet was that high, but it looks pretty daunting when you get up there. I’m not a huge fan of heights (that’s an understatement), and I’ve never really jumped off of anything before, so I didn’t really know what to do when I got up there. You don’t see much of me after the jump, but I was pretty shaky for quite awhile… and I feel really silly about that as it was just 25 feet.

I always thought skydiving or bungie jumping would be a lot of fun, but I don’t think I’d like to do either anymore.

Overall, the event was a great follow-up to last year’s pirate ship party, and with Assassin’s Creed: Unity looking like the best Assassin’s Creed yet, it’s going to be a great holiday season for Ubisoft. Take a look at my run below, and let us know what you think!

After playing the Avengers and Spider-Man Play Sets at E3, we were already confident that the campaigns would easily surpass the level of freedom and fun offered by its predecessor. As if these two open world sets weren’t already enough, a post launch Guardians of the Galaxy story was revealed just in time for the film’s big release. At Comic Con, we got some time to play within the confines of Knowhere, and found that despite being part of the same game, this Play Set manages to stand out as its own, unique experience.

Unlike the open world sand box games that the previous two sets play like, the Guardians set plays much more like an action/platforming title, facing off with waves of enemies while you traverse the mechanical environments. Featuring large scale battles that will pit you against everything from foot soldiers to enemy space ships, there’s no telling how much crazier the full set will actually be, all the way up to the inevitable showdown with Ronan The Accuser.

Each of the Guardians plays distinctively from one another, which is further showcased by the huge skill tree that has become one of the cornerstones of the upcoming sequel. For example, Star Lord uses a mix of his pistols and jet boots for a variety of attacks, Gamora relies on her sword to cut down the opposition, Drax displays his strength and battle prowess with his twin knives, Rocket fights with his arsenal of explosives and automatic guns, while Groot’s slow, lumbering movement balances out his immense power and long reach. In addition to their standard combat abilities, special moves also come into play, which charge up as enemies are defeated. Gamora’s increased speed and Drax’s power boost, for example, further distinguish each character, which will surely lead to sibling fights when the game is available for purchase.

Rounding out the cast in the demo version were Yondu, (who also appears as a temporary support character through his Marvel Sidekick Power Disc), The Collector, and Cosmo the Dog, who all provided missions for the team to tackle as the adventure progressed. Sadly, Howard the Duck was nowhere to be found, but there’s still time between now and this holiday to squeeze him in. What do you say, Disney? It has to be done!

From what we’ve played, it looks like we have three varied campaigns, a nearly limitless world creator with the Toy Box, and numerous ways to customize our favorite characters. The first game had six Play Sets by the time it was all said and done, so it’s safe to say that there will be even more in store for us as the game ages. Perhaps an X-Men Play Set?

What other Marvel worlds are you hoping make the cut? Disney Infinity 2.0 will hit stores as both a standard, and incredibly awesome collector’s edition, on September 23rd.

Rocky and Bullwinkle are back with a brand new short film produced by DreamWorks! The short (Rocky and Bullwinkle) premiered at San Diego Comic-Con to a standing room only panel. The short will be released in October on the Mr. Peabody & Sherman Blu-ray/DVD along with the first episode of the Rocky and Bullwinkle show. The original short brings back the lovable characters fans have known for years and introduces them to the next generation.

People liked the Rocky and Bullwinkle show for the story and the humor, not the animation, explained Gary Trousdale, the film’s director. Trousdale is known for having directed Beauty and the Beast, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Atlantis. The original show’s animation was not that fluid. The new film is computer animated but Leonard Maltin (panel moderator) pointed out that it still looks like a cartoon; it did not try to be real. Trousdale mentioned the artists were used to doing big scale projects so they had to tone it down for Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Someone from the audience asked if it started out as a storyboard or a script and Trousdale said it started at as script. There was a table read and he let the actors play it out. Trousdale went on to say that it was easy to animate from the script because it was so well written. Originally, they were going to have a longer version but they cut it down. Maltin commented on the length of the short saying it, “seems just the right length.”

Some of the voices on the short are soundalikes and they sound “just like the original show” remarked Maltin. June Foray returns as the voice of Rocky. Bullwinkle is voiced by Tom Kenny (SpongeBob SquarePants, Adventure Time, CatDog and much more). The film is written by Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (Night at the Museum and Reno 911!)

Rocky and Bullwinkle originally aired from 1959 to 1964 and there was a live action movie that came out in 2000. The movie was not well received, but Tiffany Ward (daughter of Jay Ward-creator of Rocky and Bullwinkle) felt it was “true in spirit” to the show and she liked it. Needless to say it has been some time since there was a new Rocky and Bullwinkle story which is actually joked about in the beginning of the short. The short itself is fun, playful and very true to the feel of the original show. Except for the fact that it is computer animated, it feels like nothing has changed. For fans of Rocky and Bullwinkle, you will want to check this out and hopefully new fans will discover this lovable and quirky duo!

At Comic Con, Konami’s booth was a giant celebration of all things YuGiOh. Everywhere you looked, all of the best cards, characters, and even a con exclusive Kaiba themed play mat were on display for new and old players to see. But the main focus wasn’t on the past, but on the future of the game, starting with the newest game mechanic, Pendulum Summoning.

Debuting with YuGiOh: Arc-V, the new anime series that saw its debut back in April, the 2014 starter deck was the first chance that North Americans got to try out the new monster type. Having only been released recently, the card game experts at the booth had numerous tables set up for the demonstrations as to how these monster turned spell cards have the potential to completely change the way the game is played.

The most immediately noticeable change is the color of the card. With its orange top half and its green bottom, color schemes that are typically reserved for effect monsters and spell cards respectively, this visual difference further illustrates the hybrid nature of these new cards. Featuring attack, defense and spell effects, duelists have the choice of playing them like normal monsters, or using them in one of the two new Pendulum Zones. While placed on these spaces, players can use its spell effect once per turn until the card is destroyed. Essentially becoming a Continuous Spell Card, it avoids many of the counters that are designed to stop these effects , since the new cards aren’t classified as any existing spell. Not only that, but when they do get destroyed by an attack or monster effect, they go face up on top of your Extra Deck, keeping them out of the graveyard. Why does it matter? That’s where their real power comes in.

Pendulum Monsters each have a value that can differ depending on which one of the two zones they’re placed on. Now, once one monster is placed on each side, their respective values come into play, potentially allowing a Pendulum Summon. What that means is that any Pendulum Monster that is between the levels of the two cards’ values can be special summoned to the field from your hand or Extra Deck on that turn. For example, if one monster has a scale value of one and the other is six, you can potentially fill your field with level two through five beasts, all while the potential spell effects of the two monsters on the scales can still be used. The best part? Each summon is a standalone move, so to my understanding, cards like Solemn Judgment, which negates the activation of a card before destroying it, would only affect one summon. The rest are free to win you the game.

Of course, this is with the best case scenario in mind. While the mechanic is still in its infancy, if Fusion, Synchro, and Xyz Summoning are any indication, then it’s safe to say that this new generation will add tons of support cards that will make us forget that these other summon types ever existed. But until then, the future looks exciting for the next stage in the popular card game’s evolution.

We hope to have some more detailed, hands on impressions with Pendulum Monsters, including a full breakdown of the Starter Deck, in the near future. Until then, stick with Geekscape.net for the rest of your Comic Con news!

San Diego Comic Con played host to the latest Skylanders panel, featuring new details on the upcoming Trap Team. A questions that’s been asked since E3 is, if Trap Team won’t have any new Lightcore figures, (variants that would light up and feature different poses), but is planning to release about 50 new figures, how will they fill up that huge number? Will, it looks like we might have got our answer, thanks to Eon’s Elite.

Essentially reprints of select characters from the original game, Spyro’s Adventure, complete with the same poses as the figures that started it all, Eon’s Elite will consist of eight figures, each designed with metallic paint, a gold base, and a 3D background, which looks a lot like a themed screen behind the character. This premium line is likely to add even more incentive for collectors and gamers alike to open their wallets. Gotta buy ‘me all!

When in game, these variants will earn upgraded and grow three times as fast as regular characters, making them easier to level up again if you already maxed out the standard versions. Or you could just take advantage of the boosts they offer and plow through the enemies of Skylands! While Spyro and Chop Chop are the only two revealed so far, it’s almost a sure thing that fan favorites like Stealth Elf and Cynder will make the cut.

Love it or hate it, Skylanders continues to find ways to entice the kids, (and the kids at heart), to want to keep on collecting. But with current figures ranging between $9.99 and $15.99 at retail, even at the low end, a full Trap Team set will cost $500 on top of the game. Between this, Amiibos, and Disney Infinity 2.0 appealing to the Marvel fan in us, this is shaping up to be a very expensive holiday season.

Does anyone else plan in picking these up? While you mull that over, check out our E3 impressions of the game here, then check back for our first look at some of the new Trap Master characters that were on display.

In the latest of many trailers for the upcoming game, (including the Guardians of the Galaxy and Gravity Falls Power Disc reveals), Loki, Ronan The Accuser and Green Goblin have been revealed as the latest playable characters coming to Disney Infinity 2.0.

Using Loki’s magic, Ronan’s superior combat skills and Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs will now be possible in the game’s Toy Box mode, showing that heroes aren’t the only ones who get the spotlight. While it’s assumed that each character will be usable in their respective Play Sets as well, don’t expect Green Goblin to show up in Knowhere, or Loki invading Ultimate Spidey’s universe. As mentioned in the past, only certain heroes will be able to cross sets after certain collectables are retrieved, but at least we’ll get the chance to wreck havoc on the world. Just not all of it.

This should come as no surprise to fans of the first game, considering a villains pack consisting of Davy Jones, Randy and Syndrome was released when the game released. However, they were implemented a little sloppily, allowing Syndrome to fight himself during story missions with no mention of how it’s even possible. Hopefully, there will be some kind of recognition of this improbable scenario when the bad guys are plugged in. The small touches go a long way.

Are the villains coming home with you when the inevitable triple pack releases, or are the many figures already on the way too much off your wallet to take without them? Disney Infinity 2.0 will release as a standalone title, a Disney starter pack, a Marvel starter pack and a Playstation exclusive collectors edition on September 23rd.

In the next few months, the much hyped Simpsons and Family Guy crossover will be unleashed on the world. To hold fans over, the crowd at Comic Con was treated to a five minute clip of what we can expect from this animated sitcom mash up. Weren’t at Comic Con? Well, since then, the clip had been all over YouTube for the public’s viewing pleasures. The results? Well… See for yourself!

http://youtu.be/-7YzXMzZ1bU

As expected, there were laughs to be had, but the clip felt a little hit or miss for me, While there were some definite laugh out loud moments, (Ralph in the school bus, the Bob’s Burgers cameo and the jab at The Cleveland Show amongst them), hearing a rape joke in Springfield was just too jarring for me. It may fit Family Guy‘s style of shock humor, but it doesn’t fit with Bart in the scene. Oh, and by the way, is anyone else over the chicken fights? Even with Homer being involved?

Will the special live up to the expectations it’s set through about a year of hype? What did you think of the clip? The special is scheduled for September 28th.

One of the panels I made sure to attend at Comic-Con was Sony Pictures Entertainment, simply because they were going to talk about the new Goosebumps movie. What?! A Goosebumps movie! I am so there! I have read almost every book in the series, loved them, and still have my original copies.

Goosebumps, if you are not aware, is a highly successful (over 400 million books sold worldwide) children’s book series by R.L. Stine that were published in the 90s. The stories feature young protagonists who encounter scary monsters/creatures/situations then have to use their wits and imagination to conquer their fears or overcome evil. The stories often feature a twist ending so you could say they are Twilight Zone horror stories for kids.

There was a television series based on the books that came out in the mid 90s that did pretty well, but personally, I did not care for it. Though the books have humor, I felt the series was cheesy but not in a good way. At first I was a little skeptical of the idea of a film, but after the panel, I am looking forward to watching it!

The panel started with a video introduction by R.L. Stine himself! Instead of the film being based on one particular book in the series, it focuses on the life of R.L. Stine (in a fictional way). The plot of the film, as explained by Rob Letterman, the film’s director, is “What if all of R.L. Stine’s creatures got loose?” Who could possibly play the part of the famous writer? Well, it is going to be none other than Jack Black.

Goosebumps3
A cartoon version of R.L. Stine with some of his monsters

They actually just finished filming two days before the panel and were able to show us a teaser trailer for the film (with only super basic FX). It looked really cool! It had action, humor, creepiness and the quality looked good. Following the trailer, Jack Black and Rob Letterman answered questions from the audience. Based on the questions, fans of Goosebumps are VERY attached to the series. One kid asked Jack Black if he has read all of the books in the series to which he replied that he had “read quite a few but not all.” Then Black joked that there are a lot of books in the series and to give him some time to finish them all. Black also commented on how he enjoys the series because as an adult they are a quick read.

goosebumps4
Jack Black talking about the film

Will this be a movie for kids? How scary did they make it? They did not “want to undercut the scares, so there will be some real tension and some humor”, said Letterman. Both Letterman and Black commented on how they have kids of their own and they wanted to make the film for kids and adults alike.

Goosebumps1
Reacting to a giant monster

Which stories will be represented in the film? Letterman said that they “…figured out the ones that were appropriate for the story they were telling.” Black and Letterman somewhat hinted at which monsters will be in the movie but they wanted to leave it a surprise. One person asked how many monsters are in film and it was funny that they could not recall exactly how many. Speaking of the monsters, some will be pure CGI, some are all makeup/practical FX and some are a hybrid of both.

Goosebump3
A funny moment in the teaser trailer where the monsters where told it was over and to go away

Letterman and Black both said Night of the Living Dummy was their favorite in the series and, at the end of the panel, Slappy himself came out on stage! It looks like Slappy is going to be a major villain in the film and apparently he is like R.L. Stine’s alter ego.  Slappy took over the panel by ushering in a bunch of monsters that dragged Jack Black away. It was a fitting ending for such a panel.

Goosebumps the film is scheduled to come out August 5th, 2015, and I know I will be checking it out!
