Remember during Sony’s E3 press conference when they announced that Sony consoles would get an exclusive Disney Infinity 2.0 collectors edition, featuring The Hulk? Well, after over a month of silence since, the package has finally been revealed, and it includes a lot more than just angry Banner.

Included in the package is the entire Avengers team from the film, including the three standard pack ins, (Iron Man, Thor and Black Widow), in addition to Captain America, Hawkeye, and of course, Hulk. The green giant will only be accessible through this package for the first month, at which point, he will be released in stores for everyone’s consumption. But who really wants to wait a month to complete the team?
And yet, that’s not all that the collectors edition has in store for us. In addition to the three extra figures, every box will come with a huge Infinity Base that doubles as a display, featuring a humongous Frost Giant in the background. Said to glow when plugged in, this base is the perfect way to both play, and display your new Marvel figures in style.

Retailing at $149.99, paying double the price for a game that already promises to eat through your wallet with its numerous characters to buy is a bit of a hard sell. Yet, if you’re planning on buying all of the characters, and they continue to retail for $12.99 each, it seems like a good idea to plunk down the extra thirty bucks or so for the base too. Plus, I’m already imagining displaying a super team to take down that giant. Frost Giant vs. Snow Queen, anyone?

In addition, the announcement also detailed a new PS3 bundle, featuring the standard starter pack and a 12gb console for $249.99, so if you have kids who want the game, but no PS3, this seems like the way to go. Too bad there aren’t any console bundles that include the collectors edition.

With so many games fighting for your dollar this holiday season, are the Frost Giant base and early access to play as Hulk enough of a reason for you to pick up this deluxe edition?

It was a long weekend, but I made it through. What a blast! Tonight I’m going to keep it simple and post some images of Cosplay from the show.

This was an amazing group. Some of them looked like the Doctor without the costumes!

I’ll be back as the week goes on with more Doctor Who panel videos and a few in-depth interviews!

This morning in Philadelphia, Matt Smith and Karen Gillan were shown just how many Whovians there are in the Philly area during a panel at Wizard World’s Comic Con Philadelphia. The crowd filled up the Grand Ballroom:

DSC_0097

It only took the crowd about a minute to realize that the duo’s roles in the show seemed so perfectly matched because of their real-life relationship. They got along like old, best friends. Here is the first few (of many) videos I will be posting from the event.

A fan asked about how much of their dialogue was improvised:

Drunk elephant:

Their first time on the TARDIS:

Another asked about any pranks they ever pulled on the set:

And, as promised, a fan dared them to sing the theme song to Doctor Who, with hilarious and fun results:

That’s it for today. I’ll be posting more videos from the Q&A, plus some other fun interviews from the con during the next few days.

Philadelphia’s Wizard World Comic Con is coming this week (June 19th-22nd), and there are all kinds of exciting events happening this year! I’m headed there (as well as fellow Geekscape writer Matt Kelly) to take in the sights, and this year’s con promises to be legendary (insert Barney Stinson reference here).

The biggest event, at least in my eyes, is the fact that Doctor Who‘s Matt Smith and Karen Gillan will be in attendance. Not only are the pair doing photo ops and signings, they are also having a panel discussion about being on Doctor Who.

Karen-Matt-matt-smith-and-karen-gillan-32113623-894-595

And while Gillan is there, she will be on a Q&A panel for Guardians of the Galaxy along with fellow Guardians stars Dave Bautista (Drax the Destroyer), and Michael Rooker (Yondu). This should give fans some insight into the upcoming film that is sure to be a blast.

Along with Guardians, there will also be a panel discussing Captain America: Winter Soldier featuring Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon) and Sebastian Stan (Bucky/The Winter Soldier).

Not into time travelers or superheroes? How about horror? John Carpenter will be on hand for “Conversations with John Carpenter” which will undoubtedly give insight into the horror legend’s filmmaking career. The website says Carpenter “will greet fans, sign autographs, pose for photo ops and and conduct an interactive Q&A panel (Saturday, 4 p.m.) in which he’ll discuss his great films.”

Another interesting one is a screening of The Karate Kid, with Ralph Macchio. There’s nothing like watching a movie with one of the stars, right?

One of the bigger names at the show is Whoopi Goldberg. “Oscar® winner Whoopi Goldberg will make her Wizard World debut at Philadelphia Comic Con, June 20-21. With dozens of television and film credits, including “The View,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” Sister Act, The Color Purple, and a wide range of talents and accomplishments, Goldberg is known to millions as an actress, comedian, host, producer, author, activist, and singer-songwriter.

whoopi

Goldberg will greet fans, pose for photo ops, sign autographs and conduct an interactive Q&A entitled “A Drink With Guinan” (Saturday, 1 p.m.) at Pennsylvania Convention Center. She will appear on Friday evening and the full event day Saturday.”

Along with the usual cosplay contests, comic artists and more, this year’s show should be a blast. If you’re in the area, make sure you check it out! Be sure to head to Wizard World’s official website to get the low-down on everything else that you can expect this weekend!

Are you headed to Philadelphia Comic Con? What are you most looking forward to this year? Let us know in the comments.

Briefly: With Comikaze 2013 now a fond memory (you have checkout out of coverage, right?) of all the good times that were had over this past weekend, we must look forward to the conventions of 2014.

The folks of the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo just announced that they are adding another day of entertainment filled excitement to their calendar. This will be the first year that the Calgary Expo will go for four days like Comic Con International which is very exciting. The 2013 Calgary Expo had numerous events beyond just the con going on, including a Weird Al concert, Dinner with Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey, and a cocktail party with the people of Torchwood (John Barrowman, Gareth David-Lloyd, and Eve Myles) and from the people I spoke with these did not disappoint.

Tickets for the Calgary expo have already gone on sale and they will start announcing guests on December 1st. Stay tuned and we at Geekscape will be sure to keep you in the loop!

This is it! Geekscape 300! Joining us for this super-sized Geekscape spectacular is Clerks star Marilyn Ghigiotti, who not only brings us lasagna (which made my head explode), but also catches us up on her post-Clerks work and talks about the process of finding out she’s going to be in ‘Clerks 3’! Gilmore, Ben Dunn and Ian Kerner appear to reenact the first Geekscape! Witney Siebold and Jason Trost talk ‘Elysium’, with Ian Kerner and Jon Schnepp (who gives us an updated on ‘The Death of Superman Lives’ documentary)! Stan Lee’s Comikaze organizer Regina Carpinelli previews what’s in store for this year’s Comikaze and Geekscape writers Juan Carlos Marquez and Josh Jackson tell us why ‘Pikmin 3’ is definitely worth picking up! PLUS! ‘Airwolf’ comic writer David Gorden calls in along with longtime Geekscape writers Jacob Lopez, Shane O’Hare, Matt Kelly and Derek Kraneveldt! JUAN CARLOS!!!

It’s Shark Week! So of course we have to have ‘Sharknado’ writer Thunder Levin on the show to talk about the biggest TV hit of the summer! Among the things we’ll be covering: where did the idea come from, why writer Sharknado but not ‘Shark Storm’ and the revelation of Ian Ziering as a big time action hero! Was anyone prepared for the Sharknado craze (could they ever be!?!)? Also, what’s with all of the remakes and comic book adaptations and it is killing the movie going experience? Is VOD the new VHS? What’s the story behind ‘Mutant Vampire Zombies in the Hood’ and how can we bring it back?!?

Briefly: With just 10 days to go until Jeff Wadlow’s Kick-Ass 2 hits theatres, Universal’s big marketing push for the film is now on in full force.

The studio today released a cool new featurette for the film, loaded with new footage as well as thoughts from the film’s cast (minus Jim Carrey, of course) and crew (including producer Matt Vaughn and director Jeff Wadlow).

I’m really looking forward to the feature, and am definitely excited to jump back into the world of Kick-Ass. Take a look at the new featurette below, and let us know what you think! Kick-Ass 2 hits theatres on August 16th!

Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and Red Mist return for the follow-up to 2010’s irreverent global hit: Kick-Ass 2. After Kick-Ass’ (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) insane bravery inspires a new wave of self-made masked crusaders, led by the badass Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), our hero joins them on patrol. When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloe Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation. When we last saw junior assassin Hit Girl and young vigilante Kick-Ass, they were trying to live as normal teenagers Mindy and Dave. With graduation looming and uncertain what to do, Dave decides to start the world’s first superhero team with Mindy.

Unfortunately, when Mindy is busted for sneaking out as Hit Girl, she’s forced to retire—leaving her to navigate the terrifying world of high-school mean girls on her own. With no one left to turn to, Dave joins forces with Justice Forever, run by a born-again ex-mobster named Colonel Stars and Stripes. Just as they start to make a real difference on the streets, the world’s first super villain, The Mother F%&*^r, assembles his own evil league and puts a plan in motion to make Kick-Ass and Hit Girl pay for what they did to his dad. But there’s only one problem with his scheme: If you mess with one member of Justice Forever, you mess with them all.

This is it, the best breakdown of ‘The Wolverine’ that you’re going to get from the best source around. X-Pert Ian Kerner cuts through The Wolverine and dissects what works and doesn’t work in this fun entry in the X-Men saga. Did they have to deviate from the comics? How did the movie have more in common with the X-Men storyline than the Claremont and Miller mini-series? Were the Silver Samurai or Viper depictions up to snuff? How does The Wolverine fit in and rank with the rest of the X-Men films? What’s coming up in Days of Future Past? Here are all the answers, in complete Ian Kerner glory!

That’s all she wrote for the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, Geekscape’s 4th as exhibitors and 8th in a row! Now it’s time to recap the misadventures with first time attendees Johnny Ice and Crippled Kenny with running commentary by my wife Laura! Was Johnny’s mind completely blown? What were the must things that he discovered? What did he take away from it the most? Kenny fills us in on just how far Comic Con has to go to make things better for their handicapped attendees! Shane O’Hare calls in to recap a drunken night of horror during Geek Spring Break! Were all the parties worth it? Matt Kelly calls up to tell us about his new 2-part podcast conversation with his brother about addiction and Derek Kraneveldt helps us filter through all the memories of the best SDCC ever! PLUS! ‘Doc of the Dead’ producer Kerry Deignan Roy calls up to give an update on Geekscape’s co-produced zombie doc!

At Comic Con, Capcom announced that they were digging up one of their classic side scrolling platformer franchises in a much anticipated return. Before you get too excited, no, it’s not Mega Man. BUT… when Strider is the game in question, it’s hard to be disappointed.

Debuting in 1989 as an arcade game that was praised for its innovation while being infamous for its difficulty, Strider was one of Capcom’s early successes, but would fade into obscurity until the ninja bad ass rose to prominence in Marvel vs Capcom. His new found fame was quickly followed by an arcade and Playstation sequel that received a very limited run, but nothing else came out of the character’s revival. Fast forward 12 years, and suddenly he’s once again heavily featured in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, leading us to this announcement. Hmm, I sense a pattern.

With developer Double Helix at the helm, (of Silent Hill: Homecoming fame and the same guys behind the upcoming Killer Instinct,) Strider looks to be coming along nicely. Promising a Metroidvania style world to explore, plenty of action and top of the line platforming, I’m excited to see the series make its return.

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think!

Briefly: This game looks amazing.

Following last year’s Zelda II inspired Adventure Time: Hey Ice King! Why’d You Steal Our Garbage?, a new trailer for the next Adventure Time video game launched at this year’s SDCC.

The trailer is brief, featuring interviews from a few of the show’s cast members and showing off some short clips of gameplay, but I already feel as though I’ve seen enough. Explore The Dungeon Because I Don’t Know! is a four-player cooperative isometric hack-n’-slash, and I cannot wait to gather a few friends to play it.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited! Adventure Time: Explore The Dungeon Because I Don’t Know! hits PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and 3DS on November 12th.

Last week during the insanity of the San Diego Comic-Con, I stopped by the Konami Gaming Suite and met with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow producer David Cox for a one-on-one interview.

GeeksScape: Before tackling the Lords of Shadow series, what other titles have you worked on?

David Cox: “I’ve done two other games; I’ve done International Track and Field on the Nintendo DS and GTI Club for Playstation Network as producer. I’ve worked at Konami for about 16-17 years now. I was product manager on Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, so that’s going back a few years.”

GeekScape: You and Castlevania go way back.

David Cox: “Absolutely. Yeah.”

GeekScape: What did it feel like for you, a gamer who grew up with Castlevania in the 80’s for the Nintendo Entertainment System, being approached by Konami and asked, “We’d like you to take over the Castlevania franchise”?

David Cox: “It was a bit daunting, but the thing is I sorta felt like I’ve come full circle because back in the 80’s, when Castlevania first came out, I bought that game, and that was the game that really made me want to work in the industry, and also, more than that, made me want to work for Konami. It was Konami that I really chased in terms of trying to get a job with them. When I joined Konami in 1997, the very first project I was given was Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I was just a product manager on that particular title, and that almost felt like there was a connection there, and then now, sixteen/seventeen years later, I was given the chance to actually be the producer and be in charge of the series. That really felt like it meant–I don’t know.

David's first project as a Konami employee. Not too shabby.
David’s first project as a Konami employee. Not too shabby.

I’m a great believer in destiny. It was like destiny was calling. I know it sounds cheesy, but that’s how I saw it. You know, I was like, ‘This is my chance and this makes sense’ because it was Castlevania that got me here in the first place. On the one hand, you’re scared because you realize there’s a huge responsibility on your shoulders, but on the other hand, it was right because it felt like it was supposed to happen.”

GeekScape: Touching on that, were there any fears tackling the Lords of Shadow series that you didn’t experience during production of Symphony of the Night?

David Cox: “The thing about Symphony of the Night was there was a lot of fear surrounding it because it was a very different departure from what was done before. I very much remember at the time that it was the Nintendo 64 game that was going to be the next big Castlevania game because it was done by the original team Kobe. So that was going to be the big game and Symphony of the Night was more of a side-story because it was from another team. It was a quite different type of game, and there were a lot of people within Konami who felt people weren’t going to get into it.

You have to understand when Symphony of the Night came out, it wasn’t that successful. It wasn’t huge. It got good reviews, no doubt about it, but the reputation built up over several years, and it became a hit more afterwards than on day one. I think that taught me that doing something new within the mythology, doing something new with Castlevania, is risky but it’s also something that’s kept Castlevania alive over the years.

The first Lords of Shadow game went on to sell the most than any other Castlevania game ever released. It’s the biggest selling Castlevania game in history. Even I can’t believe it.”

GeekScape: Like many gamers, I’m a big proponent of storytelling. If the story is well written and it has unexpected twists, such as the Trevor and Simon Belmont story in Mirror of Fate,  then I find myself genuinely concerned about the characters. In the opening cinematic of the demo, Dracula is sitting on his throne awaiting the knights who are bursting through his chamber door. The scene immediately grabs you because it’s a boss fight, but your the boss. Once you dispose of the knights with your awesome abilities, giving players that feeling of power, the scene is flipped once Dracula steps foot outside, witnessing a giant Titan destroying his castle.

When approaching Lords of Shadow 2, were there any ideas your team weren’t able to build upon in the original Lords of Shadow game due to time that you are developing in Lords of Shadow 2?

David Cox: “Yeah. We had the story arc pretty much laid out during the development of the first game, so we had the beginning and the end, but we knew we couldn’t fit the whole thing into Lords of Shadow, so that’s why we did the epilogue. The epilogue is really just saying to people, ‘Look, if we get to do another one, if you like this enough, this is where we would take it.’ That paid off in the end. It was a bit of a risk because some people were saying, “Well, I don’t think people are going to like that. It’s a bit kind of out there–it’s a bit shocking.” We went with it, and I’m glad we did because it really made people go, ‘Woah! What the f***?! Wow!’ In a way, then it became rougher for us because, “Oh shit. Now we have finish this and do something in the modern day, and how are we going to do that?” It presented lots of different challenges, but I think with this particular game what we tried to do is like you said–‘flip everything on its head’. You’re the bad guy. You’re the guy you’d normally meet at the end of the game and fight.

For me, Dracula was always this sort of one-dimensional character. He was just ‘there’ at the end of the game, and it wasn’t really explained why I am fighting him. ‘Why is it the Belmonts, and why do they have to fight Dracula?’ That’s what we tried to do with our story arc–is to explain the relationship between Dracula and the Belmonts. It’s their shame. It’s the blood feud because he’s their ancestor, essentially. Alucard is his son, the same son from previous canon, but it’s his son that he killed! He killed his own son and tried to bring him back, and is making him into a creature like him, and it’s kind of a tragedy that he killed his own son. How would you feel about that? Finding out that you murdered your own son? It’s quite desperate. So I think to present Dracula as not just as a one-dimensional character–that was the core thing about the series that we wanted to do.

dracprofile

With [Lords of Shadow 2], we want to end and tell the whole story. We’ve got a story to tell, and we want to tell it, and then we want to move on. We need to give players a satisfying conclusion, and I think we need to surprise people as well; that’s something we really enjoy doing.”

GeekScape: The Nintendo 3DS game Mirror of Fate focuses more on Simon and Trevor Belmont whereas the Lords of Shadow series focuses primarily on Dracula himself. Did you and your team have a lot of fun creating the history between Dracula and the entire Belmont clan?

David Cox: “Yeah! I mean, we loved working on Mirror of Fate. It was such a different project from such a big console game like [Lords of Shadow 2].  We really enjoyed it. It’s a story that makes us interested in the game. It’s one of the things that really drives the team–it’s the story. Mercury Steam likes to tell stories; that’s what they’re good at. From the story, the game play comes. From the story, the other elements come. So I think that’s really one of the core things about [Lords of Shadow 2] is when people play this game, and they get the story and the shocks and the twists and the turns and the unexpected stuff that we want to show them, I think, hopefully, they’ll look back on it think, ‘Wow. They really did something unique in the [Castlevania] universe.'”

GeekScape: Was there anything you wanted to address in Lords of Shadow 2 that you saw in the first game and said, “I want this to be priority number one when we work on the sequel.”

David Cox: “There was a lot of things! We got a lot of feedback from fans regarding things that they really loved;  they really loved the combat, but they wanted more exploration. They wanted more peril in platforming. They wanted more freedom of movement in terms of being able to find secrets and hidden items and things like that, so that’s something we really wanted to improve in [Lords of Shadow 2]. Obviously, the fixed camera is not friendly to exploration. You can’t move. I mean, you’ve got a great vista, but you can’t really look around and really explore.

We sat down in the design meeting and asked how we are going to do the next game rather than do a cheap knock-off, basically. We thought ‘let’s start again and rip up the rule book, and then really do what we wanted to do in the first place’ in terms of free camera, more open world environments, more items to find, more exploration, more peril in platforming, and make the Titans more interesting.

Seige Titan

The thing about the Titans in the first game, I mean, they’re visually spectacular but they were quite staged; you had to follow a route, break the runes, and move on. We thought we could really improve that, and with [Lords of Shadow 2], you can see that you’re fighting on the Titan. You’re climbing on the Titan, but you’re being attacked at the same time. There’s peril, combat, exploration, multiple pathways up the Titans–some of the other Titans are quite bigger. We wanted to give players more variety.”

GeekScape: On that note, I wanted to mention how much I loved the sequences when you’re actually climbing up the Titan, because it gives you that sense of scale and depth. You can see the gears and pistons working and how they’re connected so the Titan isn’t just a character model. It makes it far more tangible.

David Cox: “That’s right. It looks and feels like a real moving machine.”

GeekScape: You have this bad-ass character in Dracula, the final boss in almost every Castlevania game. He is an extremely powerful entity. Other than sunlight, garlic, and wooden stakes, there’s very little that can hurt him. How difficult was it for you and your team to create characters and obstacles which would be a legitimate threat to Dracula?

David Cox: “He is a bad-ass character, but I guess he’s like Superman or any superhero–you have to give him adversaries that are going to challenge his abilities. Adversaries who are on, or about, the same level as [Dracula]. In [Lords of Shadow 2], we have a lot of really interesting boss fights and characters that he’s going to meet. Satan is coming back to earth, and Satan is the only one who’s been defeated by Gabriel, and obviously Satan wants to settle that score. So, you know, it’s going to be challenging, and the other thing you need to remember is that this demo takes place in the past, but after this demo you wake up in the future, and you have no powers and no abilities. You’re back to square one. You’ve got to get your powers and abilities back over time. You’re not as powerful as you are here, until the end of the game, of course.”

GeekScape: And the end of the previous title, we see that Dracula is still alive and wakes up in a modern city. Was there any discussion of having a game set in a non-medieval setting?

David Cox: “I don’t know. Our intention with the present day was to do something that fit the universe. Coming from Europe, most of the modern European cities are built on old ruins or old castles. You can walk in Madrid, for example, and you can be surrounded by modern skyscrapers, and then walk down a road and you’re in the middle of a courtyard with minarets, stained-glass windows, gargoyles, and statues. [The city Dracula wakes up in] is a modern city, but it’s an imagined modern city; it feels like it belongs in the Castlevania universe. We didn’t just want to put Dracula in Times Square, for example. That wouldn’t have worked.”

GeekScape: That would feel a bit like Dracula 2000.

David Cox:Yeah. Dracula 2000 A.D.; that really crappy film. We wanted to give Dracula an environment that felt like it fit the Castlevania universe. That was key. It’s an imagined city, but it’s a city that could exist in Europe, so that’s essentially where we wanted to take it.

When we finish this game, I mean, this is our last game. We are going to pass the torch on to another team. What they do with Castlevania–really, that’s really up to them. We’ve got our story to tell, and there’s nothing worse than telling a story then keep coming back when there’s nothing to say. We’ve got something to say, and we’re going to say it, and then we’re done with [Castlevania].”

GeekScape: When Lords of Shadow 2 is finally done, providing the final chapter in the Castlevania story you and your team worked on for the past several years, what in particular do you feel you will look back on and be especially proud of?

David Cox: “I think for me, one of the things I’m most proud of, at the end of Mirror of Fate–did you finish it?”

GeekScape: Absolutely–

David Cox: “–is showing Dracula as a tragedy, especially with his dead son, Alucard. When Robert Carlyle did that scene where he realizes he has killed his son, Robert was proper crying when he did that scene. I mean, that was really powerful. I’ll never forget it. When I play that game, I was there when Robert did that line when he was crying in the recording studio. That, even now, chokes me up.

I think that’s something people should remember about Dracula. Yeah, he’s a bad-ass. He is a character that can do amazing things. He’s ‘evil’, but he’s a character that has more to him than just black and white. I think people will see that in Lord of Shadows 2.”

GeekScape: Without giving anything away, is there a moment in the game you can’t wait for gamers to reach for it has your favorite ‘oh my god!’ moment?

David Cox: “People can expect a lot of that. There’s one fight in particular that people didn’t get any satisfaction in [Lords of Shadow], which was Dracula versus Zobeck. That’s coming.” (grins)

GeekScape: Any final words for the fans anxiously awaiting Lords of Shadows 2?

David Cox: “Yeah! Absolutely. I think when the game comes out, I hope they’ll be surprised and pleased with the direction we’ve taken the story. One thing about the epilogue, it left a lot of people going, ‘What the f***?!’, and I think there’s going to be a lot of that in Lords of Shadow 2. A lot of surprises, and keep an open mind because we’re not going to go in the direction I think a lot of people are expecting.”

After the interview, David Cox revealed that due to his demanding schedule, he hasn’t played many video games at all, but would love to get his hands on The Last of Us, going on to say, “Those guys at Naughty Dog can do no wrong.” Smiling, he added that he is scared to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf, for his daughter has been playing it and is afraid he’d be addicted to it as well.

We also talked about our shared hate for the flying Medusa heads in the original game, and the Lords of Shadow producer confirmed that the snake-haired monster will be returning to make your life a living hell in Lords of Shadow 2.

Briefly: Kick-Ass 2 already looked amazing, but this Comic Con extended trailer looks to really up the ante.

Clocking in at just under five minutes, the new preview features a ton of previously unreleased footage, including a nice look at Mother Russia. Action, plot, and humour fill the trailer, which gives you a fantastic sense of what the final film will feel like.

Take a look at the new (very red band) trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited for the film!

When these amateur superheroes are hunted down by Red Mist (Christopher Mintz-Plasse)—reborn as The Mother F%&*^r—only the blade-wielding Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz) can prevent their annihilation.

Briefly: During this year’s fantastic San Diego Comic-Con, The CW revealed a cool first trailer for the highly anticipated second season of Arrow. Apparently it reveals some pretty heavy spoilers for the show’s first season, so seeing as I still haven’t caught up, I haven’t actually watched the preview myself.

I’m hearing that great things are in store for the show’s second season, so I better get caught up quickly! Arrow returns on October 9th!

Check out the season two trailer below, and let us know what you thought of the first season!

http://youtu.be/HaGbiHSLvuo

Briefly: We’re finally approaching the fall release date of Traveller’s Tales highly anticipated Lego Marvel Super Heroes, and the developer has released a cool new character trailer for the title.

This preview features a ton of new characters, some of Traveller’s Tales classic humour, and plenty to fall in love with. I’ve been wanting to check this game out forever, and this fall can’t come soon enough.

Watch the new trailer for Lego Marvel Super Heroes below, and let us know what you think! The game hits Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Playstation Vita, 3DS, PS3, PS4, and PC this Fall!

Briefly: During this year’s incredible San Diego Comic-Con, Lionsgate debuted a fantastic new trailer for the wildly anticipated The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

Katniss and Peeta’s incredible victory has given people something that the capitol never wanted them to have: hope. As Katniss and Peeta are the source of this hope, they clearly need to be exterminated (and in a subtle and non-obvious way). I have to say that while I didn’t love (or even really like) the first Hunger Games film, Catching Fire appears to be a much more serious, much more adult picture, and based on this new preview, I’m now quite fascinated with how things may turn out.

Take a look at the new trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire below, and let us know what you think! The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Jena Malone, Woody Harrelson, and plenty of others, and is set to hit theatres on November 22nd.

Did you manage to get into Hall H for this one? Let us know what you saw!

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE begins as Katniss Everdeen has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark. Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a “Victor’s Tour” of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) – a competition that could change Panem forever.

Briefly: This is certainly one of the biggest (and best) gaming surprises of this year’s Comic-Con.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Namco Bandai’s Soul Calibur II, the company has decided to rerelease the game as a downloadable title. Oh yeah, and they’ve also updated it with full high-definition graphics and online multiplayer.

Awesome, right?

Soul Calibur II HD Online is set to hit PS3 and Xbox 360 later this year. No word has been given on the state of the original release’s console specific characters, but seeing as a Wii U version was not announced, you sadly won’t be fighting as Link any time soon. It’s been years (nearly 10, in fact) since I’ve played Soul Calibur II, but the game was an incredible achievement in fighting games, and I’ll certainly be checking out this updated version.

Take a look at the first trailer for the rerelease below, and let us know what you think! We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the title as we learn more!

zombie

Who doesn’t like zombies? If pop culture references are any indication, zombies are still on the rise (The Walking Dead, Warm Bodies, and countless youtube videos to name a few). At San Diego Comic-Con, there was a panel dedicated to looking at ‘Zombies in Pop Culture’ headed by Max Brooks (author of World War Z and Zombie Survival Guide). Brooks was joined by a good handful of authors and they discussed the origin of the present day zombie and how zombies fit into pop culture.

DSC03634

How zombies are represented has changed much over the years, but the way we think of them today can be attributed to George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead (1968). The film was originally titled Night of the Flesh Eaters, but was changed last minute, and due to the lack of that little copyright symbol, the film became public domain. Thus whomever wanted to make a film with zombies could because they were not trademarked.

Now with films like World War Z (the zombies are not fast in the book), there are super powered zombies! Brooks mentioned how he was asked if he would write a survival guide for fast zombies and he said, “Yeah, it would be a [thin] pamphlet that says kiss your ass goodbye!”. When zombies can run like normal humans, it seems a little off. They are dead thus their bodies should not move the way they would if they were alive. Something about zombies being so inhuman is what makes them disturbing. The panel mentioned how the more human the zombies are, the less scary they seem because you could possibly reason with them (or at least think you can). The way zombies will just kill anything makes your death less special and, in turn, makes you unimportant. That realization is what makes them terrifying.

However, regardless of how crazy the zombies are, zombie movies/shows/games should have at least taught us it is really other people that you have to worry about. The drama amongst people is one of the main draws of the zombie story line. Steven Schlozman, M.D. mentioned how, “The zombies aren’t the danger, it’s us”. Schlozman M.D. also agreed that we can learn from zombie pop cultured “what NOT to do”.

 DSC03635

The panel as a whole believed zombies were here to stay, maybe they might drop back into the shadows a little but they will not disappear. Overall, it was a humorous discussion about societies fascination with these undead creatures and the pseudo-post apocalyptic world they inhabit.

IMAG3802editI was able to get a photo with Max Brooks after panel!  I happened to be cosplaying Supergirl that day ^_^

BTW, that is me as a zombie up at the top 😉

Briefly: There have been rumours of a Heroes revival since before the show even aired its last episode. Each and every time word comes that Heroes will return in one form or another, fans are left with nothing but disappointment as nothing ever comes to light.

This time, it’s official. Heroes will have a fifth season in comic book form.

Dynamite Entertainment is bringing the franchise back to life; Cullen Bunn is set to write the book, which is currently without an artist (but it won’t be Tim Sale). Bunn is a newcomer to the Heroes comics, but as he was an avid fan of the show, I have faith that things should turn out pretty well.

In an interview with CBR, Bunn states:

“I was a faithful viewer of ‘Heroes’ when it was on television. The things that most appealed to me about this are that I like the world. I like the concept of ordinary people who discovery they have these powers and are working in a world where superheroes are not common knowledge. It’s all about normal people discovering this and the situations they get into. There are some aspects of that which are still out there to be discovered.

More than that, I really want to delve into these characters more,” the writer continued. “That was really the heart of the show. Sure, there were people with powers, but what really appealed to me was how they grew as characters. There’s a core group of characters that are mainly from the first season who I really like and we’ll be seeing in the book.”

Bunn went on to reveal that all of the series’ main characters would return and that, like the show, the comic would switch perspectives between issues.

With the way that season four ended, I’ve been itching for more Heroes for years. The series had its fair share of problems, but I’d jump on the opportunity to get back into this world. How do you feel about the announcement? Is Dynamite’s Heroes something for your pull list? Or will you ignore it like you did the later seasons? Sound out below!

On the eve of Comic-Con, I had an opportunity to visit the Nintendo Game Lounge to get my hands on the latest demo for Platinum Games’ first Wii U entry—The Wonderful 101. It was the fourth time I’ve played the game, going all the way back to last year’s E3 and PAX events, and again last month for E3 2013. What I played last night, however, will more than likely be the last demo of the game I’ll play before its official release next month, and how poetic it is that the last demo for The Wonderful 101 focuses on the beginning.

The demo opens up inside a monorail train where a humble blond-haired school teacher is taking his students out on a field trip. After a quick flashback, the peace inside the train is disrupted by a giant explosion. With kids screaming and panicking, the school teacher (that’s you) must gather all his kids and safely guide them to the back of the train–avoiding armored invaders in the process. Once the kids are safe, the teacher begins a Sailor Moon-esque transformation sequence in which he is revealed to be none other than Wonder Red–the game’s main protagonist and leader of The Wonderful 101!

Unlike other tedious and mundane game tutorials, Hideki Kamiya and his team have included more than enough humor to keep things fresh and entertaining. I don’t think I’ve ever smiled as much through the first five minutes of a video game as I did during the opening sequence to The Wonderful 101, especially when Wonder Blue makes his entrance in Tuxedo Mask fashion while an all-male chorus sings in the background.

Gamers who have any reservations or criticisms that the game is merely ‘Pikmin with masks’ can throw those criticisms out the window. Right from the very beginning of the demo, Kamiya’s humor and style is evident, as members of the Wonderful 101, who appear to be stuck in the air as the narrator gives a lengthy backstory, begin to cramp up and beg for the narrator to end his diatribe.. Each of the 100 heroes in the game come with their own unique power and players can switch leaders quickly and easily with the Wii U game pad.

Anyone attending the San Diego Comic Con should definitely stop by the Nintendo Game Lounge and give the demo a spin. With so much humorous dialogue and sight gags, seamless combat controls and detailed environments, The Wonderful 101 has the makings of an instant classic for the Wii U and a prosperous new IP for Nintendo.

The Wonderful 101 will be available at retail stores and the Nintendo eShop on September 13, 2013

Gonna be in San Diego this weekend? Yes, the behemoth that is Comic-Con will be going on (and on and on), but there is another con that you may not have heard about, Gam3r Con (Wednesday-Sunday) will be running at the same time; Gam3r Con is located at the 10th Ave Theater and is a multi-story playhouse dedicated to games, theatre, and more!

There are different rooms designated for different types of gaming: tabletop, old school (Retrocade), and console. It feels like you went over to your friend’s house and all of your buddies are there. There is a little something for everyone. They also have game inspired art throughout the building and even hosted a painting party Wednesday evening.

Be sure to check out the live entertainment: Gam3rs: The Play, I Wish My Life Was an RPG, and War Games. There will also be some films and stand up comedy!

Gam3rs: The Play recently had a one night engagement in a sold out theater in North Hollywood. They even had to add extra chairs! The audience loved the performance by Brian Bielawski and really connected to the material. One fun moment I remember during the show was when Geekscape’s own Jonathan London approvingly nodded along to a specific Farscape reference. However, one can still enjoy the show without knowing what it is like to play a MMORPG (massive multi-player online role playing game), or not following every nerd shout out. The main character, Steve, is just your average guy trying to survive a soul crushingly boring job, deal with an over bearing boss/bothersome coworker and remember his girlfriend’s birthday. You can still catch this hilarious one man show Saturday at 10pm and Sunday at 2:30pm.

These are just some of the many awesome things you will discover at Gam3r Con. So be sure to check it out!

With San Diego Comic-Con just a few days away, everyone here at Geekscape is getting prepared for our biggest convention ever. As always, there will be more to see and do in San Diego this week than is humanly possible, so each of us has been scouring the schedules and deciding exactly what is most important to us while we’re there.

While deciding what we need to do and see, and what we’d be okay with missing, we thought that we’d include all of you in the fun as well. Here’s part three of our pre-SDCC round table, where we share the panels that we’re most looking forward to at San Diego Comic-Con.

Thursday

How to Get News Coverage for Small Press Publishers
What makes the difference between an item that will get news coverage, previews, or interviews, and what doesn’t? Many publishers have no idea what to submit to the press, how to submit it, and why they are being overlooked for coverage. Comic journalist Rik Offenberger (First Comics News, Archie Comics) moderates this panel on just what it takes to get coverage, with the comic journalists themselves telling you what they are looking for in your submission. Panelists include (in alphabetical order) Albert Ching (Newsarama), Glenn Hauman (Comic Mix), Holly Golightly (BroadSword Comics), Rich Johnston (Bleeding Cool), Alan Kistler (Comic Mix), Heidi MacDonald (The Beat), Chris Squires (Buckley Radio), Tanya Tate (First Comics News), Chris Thompson (First Comics News), J. C. Vaughn (The Scoop), Josh Waldrop (M1W Entertainment), and Bryan Young (Huffington Post, Big Shiny Robot). Find out what it takes to self-promote and make a significant impact on your ability to sell your comic.

Considering we don’t know if this game is going to stand up to the previous two or by a shadow of the franchise’s former self, this panel may be a must for those of us who want answers… and we DO want answers! Next to GTAV, this is my most anticipated game left this year. I’ll be damned if I have to wait until October 25th to get my fix in!

I’m a sucker for Syder and Lemire. Snyder’s The Wake is one of my favourite new miniseries, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! I own nearly all of Lemire’s books, and Trillium looks absolutely badass. I couldn’t possibly miss an opportunity to hear the two talking about their next projects!

I don’t know if I’ve used Geekscape as a forum for discussing my intense ElfQuest fandom before… but I’m a pretty intense ElfQuest fan. I have one panel that I’d like to attend on Friday and this is it! After accosting Stephanie Thorpe at a party 2 months ago and cross-examining her about the latest news on ElfQuest, I’ve had to wait for this panel to get my true answers! If you’re a wolf rider like I am, you’ll be there Friday night!

Saturday

A&E Bates Motel
The Bates Motel is open for business in San Diego! Executive producers Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights) will release new footage from the highly acclaimed A&E drama series Bates Motel exclusively for Comic Con attendees. The executive producers will be joined by the cast, including Academy Award nominee Vera Farmiga (Norma Bates), Freddie Highmore (Norman Bates), Max Thieriot (Dylan), Olivia Cooke (Emma), and Nestor Carbonell (Sheriff Alex Romero) to discuss the show’s unique backstory and creation. Fans will get an opportunity to hear more about season 2, debuting in 2014 on A&E, and will have a chance to ask the cast and creators questions during a Q&A. Moderated by Tim Stack from Entertainment Weekly.
Saturday July 20, 2013 10:00am – 11:00am
Room 6A

Want to know the one thing I didn’t love about the first season of Bates Motel? How damned short it was. Sure, there’s a season two in the works, but it won’t premiere until well (well) into 2014! To have a chance to see new footage, as well as hear directly from the creators and actors, is an opportunity that I do not want to miss!

Jay Glatfelter and Jack Glatfelter (Jay and Jack TV, The Married Man Show) and special guests get lost in TV talk. The co-hosts of the popular Lost Podcast with Jay and Jack discuss Lost three years after the airing of its finale, as well as other TV shows that have filled the void, such as Once Upon a Time, Person of Interest, Game of Thrones, Justified, and many more.
Saturday July 20, 2013 2:00pm – 3:00pm
Room 29A

Of course, my second most anticipated panel is LOST Podcast and Beyond. There are other bigger panels on my list, but in terms of actually being able to get into the likes of Hall H or Ballroom 20 without feeling guilty for missing other panels is a different story.

Behind the Scenes with Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead Game Series
Join Robert Kirkman (Creator of The Walking Dead comic series) and Telltale Game’s Dan Connors (Telltale Games, CEO) and Kevin Bruner (Telltale Games, President and CTO) as they discuss the inspiration behind developing the critically-acclaimed game series. Along with PlayStation’s Don Mesa (Director of Product Planning & Platform Software Innovation, SCEA), the team will walk fans through the origins of the game, reveal details on exciting new gameplay features exclusive to PlayStation Vita and include a little sneak peek on what’s to come for next chapter of The Walking Dead game series. A moderated by Greg Miller (Executive Editor, IGN).

You know full well how much all of us at Geekscape love Telltale’s The Walking Dead. Having just finished the 400 Days DLC, we’re hungry for more. This panel is set to include what is bound to be a very exciting origin story about the series, as well as a sneak peek of season two? Yes please.

Batman: The Animated Series Turns 21
Pop the champagne! The landmark television production Batman: The Animated Series turns 21 this year. Spend an hour with the creative core of this groundbreaking series — Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, Alan Burnett, and Eric Radomski — as they recollect the dynamics of crafting a series that would have a resounding influence on Dark Knight properties — and the entire animated television landscape — for two decades and counting.

Saturday July 20, 2013 5:45pm – 6:45pm
Room 6DE

Aside from the few video game panels I want to attend, (Arkham Origins, Splinter Cell: Blacklist), I’m incredibly excited for Batman: The Animated Series Turns 21. While the series is almost as old as I am, I’m tempted to show up to the panel with the handmade cape my mom gave me when I was three years old.

Lion Forge Comics Fall Lineup: Knight Rider, AirWolf, Saved by the Bell, Punky Brewster, Miami Vice, and more!

This is it, the panel in which we talk about our brand new Lion Forge comics! I’ll be on stage talking about Miami Vice with my editor Shannon Denton and the creative teams behind the rest of the great Lion Forge Fall Lineup, including recent Geekscape guest Brandon Easton! If you want the down low on the digital comics downloads, look no further than this panel! We might even give away some free stuff!

The future of comics? We think so.
The future of comics? We think so.

Well, that’s it! I’m sure we’ll be slipping into other panels as the days go by, but everything you see above is definitely worth waiting in line for. We’re all getting unbelievably excited for the convention, and can’t wait to see you all there!

Don’t forget to visit Geekscape all throughout the week at booth #3919!

We’re busy gearing up for SDCC later this week, and apparently, so is Legendary’s Godzilla.

Director Gareth Edwards has released a special pre-convention message for fans eager to get their first taste of the film. The quick video reveals little of what to expect, but does reveal a viral-marketing link at godzillaencounter.com, which features an ever-expanding story of a mysterious anomaly approaching the California coast.

Take a look at Gareth’s message below, and let us know what you’re hoping to see this week! Coming to Comic Con? Be sure to visit Geekscape at booth 3919!

The 2013 San Diego Comic Con is right around the corner! We’re old veterans here at Geekscape, but that doesn’t mean we’re any less excited when Comic Con rolls around each year! To help us prep, 20 year SDCC veteran Matt Raub is in the studio breaking down the Must Dos and Must Avoids, as well as sharing some of his greatest, and worst, Comic Con memories! Also joining us is Nick Gregorio, longtime Geekscape friend but first time Comic Con attendee! Plus! Sci Fi master Marc Zicree calls in to give us an update on Space Command and give some great Comic Con advice and author Marcus Sakey calls in to geek out with us, talk about his new book ‘Brilliance’ and discuss his insane job hosting The Travel Channel’s ‘Hidden City’! See you in San Diego!

With San Diego Comic-Con less than one week away, everyone here at Geekscape is getting prepared for our biggest convention ever. As always, there will be more to see, do, and buy in San Diego next week than is humanly possible, so each of us has been scouring the schedules, products, and exclusives lists and deciding exactly what is most important to us while we’re there.

While deciding what we need to buy, and what we’d be okay without, we thought that we’d include all of you in the fun as well. Here’s part two of our pre-SDCC round table, where we share what we’re most looking forward to at San Diego Comic-Con. Today, we’re talking exclusives, art, products, and more!

Shane O’Hare

Part 2 baby! The list of my most looked forward to exclusives and artists is pretty damn diverse. Of course it goes wuthout saying The Aquabats and the Mega64 Boyz are first on my list. The ‘bats have their concert going on the FIRST night, so it will be a HUGE start to the weekend. Then the Mega64 crew has their booth, you can expect me to drop some cash night one there. The author of the amazing looking The Fifth Beatle graphic novel, Vivek Tiwary will be there alongside the two incredible artists, Andrew Robinson and Kyle Baker. I cannot wait to interview these guys, AND get my hands on the book!

The SWAG I want is the SWAG I get. The super cute My Little Pony exclusives are a must for me. A tradition I’ve had the last few times is hittin up the Mr. Toast booth and grabbing their con exclusive. This year it’s ZOMBIE BACON!. And I GUESS I’ll grab the Blizzard Zergling plush for a friend. Let’s not forget about Bandai’s exclusive Power Rangers Gold Legacy Morpher, that thing just looks INCREDIBLE. I got my eyes out for any cool and exciting hats or helmets to add to my collection!

I’m not much of a collector, so when I buy something at Comic-Con, it’s usually something I’ll keep. This year will be no different. My first order of business will be to secure this classic Batmobile, which is priced at $60:

Photographer Dennis Stylist Alfonse

In any case, Entertainment Earth is usually my first stop. I may snag a Walking Dead exclusive while I’m there. I also have my eye on the Yes Anime booth; they’ll have some Superman and Batman figurines that are sure to attract attention.

A01

Have a look for yourself, and maybe you’ll see something you want!

As for vendors, I will be visiting the RoosterTeeth and Penny Arcade booth. Nothing but good experiences there and they always have something great for sale! And don’t forget to ask them to sign, they’re typically happy to!

Derek Kraneveldt

As I noted in Tuesday’s piece, this year’s SDCC is pretty much my first convention. I hear that it’s expensive, and that you essentially always spend more than you’re anticipating, which is a little bit terrifying (but if I get cool stuff out of it, it’ll be hard to be disappointed).

I’ve scoured through the entire list of exclusives on the official site, and I think that I’ll do pretty well. There was very little that stood out at me as I NEED THIS, which is likely only because I’m not looking forward to paying everything off when I get home.

In any case, here are the products that I’m most looking forward to picking up at Comic-Con:

PVZSDCC CVR600

The Plants vs. Zombies comic is set to be digital only for some time, but the first chunk will be available at Comic-Con. I’m a huge PvZ fan, and for a measly $2.00, this one will be hard to pass up. I’m hoping to score an interview with writer Paul Tobin as well, and figure out just how he turned a silly, tower defence game into an enthralling comic book.

SKI_SDCC2013_Exclusive

The Squid Kids Ink 10-Doh! figure looks super cool, and that’s the only reason I want it. For $20, it would look pretty cool sitting on my desk.

My girlfriend’s birthday is coming up (in fact, I’ll be missing it while I’m in San Diego), so maybe this cool exclusive Lady Rainicorn + Puppies set will partially make up for it?

pacific_rim_thorp_Kaiju

Artist Ash Thorpe has two awesome Pacific Rim prints up for grabs. Framing them and mounting them both on my wall will surely make me more popular, right?

Aside from that, I’ll probably have a hard time not buying things once I’m there in person. This is definitely my list of must-haves however! I’m also on the lookout for Gary Frank, as my father has sent me on a quest to obtain a sketch from the venerable artist.

That’s it for today! Look for part three in the series on Saturday!

Readers, are you headed to the convention? What are you most looking forward to?

San Diego Comic-Con is a week away, and all of us OG Gamers and nerds will be using our well-honed gaming strategy and critical path-building skills to plan which panels they want to see, which celebrities they hope to meet and how they’re going to handle the 8-hour-long lines.

Being from San Diego I am lucky I have somewhere to stay ( and no, you cannot crash on my couch – sorry).

However, if you know anything about SDCC, whether  you are a local or not, you know the weekend is going to be expensive. Well-aware of the popularity of the event, hotels have increased their prices to match the demand, and many rooms are renting for over $400 a night! CRAY-Cray!

Your wallet after SDCC.

Airline algorithms have also noticed the increased traffic to San Diego in late July and are charging around $200 extra dollars per seat. If you haven’t already organized your travel and lodging, be prepared to spend even more; nearly all the hotels in San Diego are booked, and services like AirBed and Breakfast are charging $800 per night for local couchsurfers. Although there are couchsurfing websites you may be able to look into – it’s better than the convention floor! Besides, San Diegans have a reputation for being nice, so I’m almost 75% sure you won’t get brutally murdered.

After all that money getting here, you’ll need to eat. SDCC is right in the middle of Gaslamp Historical District, and honestly SDCC is the ONLY time this place is cool. Its overrun by nerds during SDCC instead the usual drunken jock crowd that tend to congregate here.

Since it is SDCC, and the only time of the year this part of town is absolutely awesome, you will want to check out the awesome events going on outside the convention hall (a local put a list together on Facebook) and buy a few things in the 460,000-square-foot Exhibit Hall and . (We’ve already written about the toys we want, like the exclusive Adventure Time puppies or the Transformers Masterpiece Soundwave.)

Imagine you are a San Diegan, because rent will still be due on the first of the month. Here are a few tips to enjoy the weekend without breaking your budget:

credit-cards

Don’t put anything on a high-interest credit card

Seriously, I live in San Diego and it is expensive! That one time you splurge on a $20 burger, or an $8 slice of pizza, trust me it isn’t a splurge. That’s how much it costs here, especially Gaslamp. We’re nerds, we can do math. There’s still time to search for a new credit card with a 0 percent interest rate. Start with the best cards from NerdWallet and make sure your $800 AirBed and Breakfast room isn’t going on a card that charges 20% interest!

Don’t buy food anywhere you have to sit down

I live in San Diego, so maybe I’m just biased but, you’ll have plenty of time for sitting when you’re waiting overnight for NBC’s Community Panel (Sunday, Hall H, hosted by Chris Hardwick). Instead, save on cash by eating only from places where you have to stand up: convenience stores and even those pretzels they sell in the convention center lobby.

If you really want to plan ahead, fill your backpack with delicious foodstuffs like granola bars and fruit; that’ll save you from a mid-afternoon snack attack where the only thing you can afford to eat comes with its own packet of orange nacho cheese (which is never actually cheese!).

But if you really want good food, go outside of downtown. Check out “restaurant row” on 30th street in North Park. It’s a $15 cab ride and well worth it if you need a break from the hustle and bustle.

Don’t buy anything you can’t carry

It’s way too easy to run through the Exhibit Hall like a katamari on Red Bull, grabbing everything that looks shiny until you have action figures spilling out of your arms. Because I have somewhere to go every night, I avoid those big bags like the plague or trust me – I WILL FILL IT. I’m a girl, its what we do. So I only hold on to what I can carry in my arms. If it isn’t worth carrying in my arms all day or immediately taking it back home (in your case your hotel room), then I probably don’t need it. When you run out of toys you can hold in your arms or pack into your Thinkgeek Bag of Holding, you’re done.

money

Don’t get defeated by money-sucking minibosses

Most of us are still Level 1 Financial Ninjas. We’re slowly making our way through the Financial Timeline of Adulthood but can still easily get tripped up by something stronger than we are, like an original animation cell from Spirited Away or a night spent drinking overpriced cocktails just because you heard that Joss Whedon was going to show up at the bar. (Pro tip: he’s not, unless its our Nerf Herder show – we hope.)

Last tip: whenever you feel like buying something, go sit in a line for a panel instead. It’ll take up a few hours, you’ll make new friends and you won’t be able to spend a single cent until the panel’s over.

How are you planning to spend your Comic-Con? Let us know in the comments – and don’t forget to visit the Geekscape crew at Booth 3919 in the Exhibit Hall and at Comic Con Nerdathon!
