Briefly: Captain America fan? You’ll want to make sure that you head to the Marvel booth (#2329) so that you can get your eyes on this incredible display.

Headlining the Captain America 75th anniversary celebration, Marvel has collaborated with high-end collectibles maker Comicave Studios to create a one-of-a-kind Captain America statue that will be displayed at the Marvel booth #2329 at Comic-Con International on July 20. Comicave Studios worked closely with Marvel artists in New York and a Brooklyn-based sculptor to design the bronze tribute, standing at over 13 feet and weighing 1 ton. The statue will continue to stand tall on the show floor throughout San Diego Comic-Con for photo ops with fans, and 1/12-scale bronze replicas of the statue will be available for purchase. Plus, a custom comic book was created by Marvel Publishing writers and artists to integrate the statue into new storytelling. This one-of-a-kind comic will be available in limited quantities at San Diego Comic-Con and future Captain America events.

Following SDCC, the commemorative statue will journey via truck across the country to Brooklyn, NY – the hometown of Steve Rogers – for a limited engagement in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Fans can follow the truck along its cross-country route through photos on social media sites like Marvel and StyledByMarvel Instagram. The statue will be on display in the Children’s Corner of Prospect Park for a two-week temporary installation, kicking off with a dedication ceremony and community event on August 10th from 1-3pm. In the evening, a special viewing of the recent blockbuster film, Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, will take place in Prospect Park as part of the culmination of the Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams’ “A Summer Movie Under the Stars” program, which will be airing four Captain America-focused movies every Wednesday from July 20th to August 10th.

“To the rest of America and the world, he’s Captain America; to us, he’ll always be Steve Rogers, ‘just a kid from Brooklyn,’” said Borough President Adams. “Brooklyn is proud to be the base of celebrations for Cap’s 75thanniversary, which will be capped by a larger-than-life statue traveling around our borough — befitting of this larger-than-life character. Prospect Park is the place to be this summer to enjoy the Captain America!”

After the half-month stop in Prospect Park, the Captain America statue will move to the plaza outside Barclays Center on Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues for September, during which several Marvel fan activations take place. From late October through the remainder of the year, the statue will adorn the soon-to-be-opened Bed Bath & Beyond® in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Fans of all ages will enjoy a specially re-designed statue base, for heightened interactivity and photo opportunities with Captain America, as well as see and shop for a variety of unique Marvel items, including limited quantities of scaled replicas of the bronze statue itself.

“Since 1941 Captain America has remained one of the most influential Super Heroes in comic book history,” said Paul Gitter, senior vice president, licensing, Marvel at Disney Consumer Products. “He has evolved as a character throughout the years, but remains constant as a moral compass within the Marvel Universe and leader of the Avengers. The tribute statue and other activations are the perfect way to honor 75 years of this iconic Super Hero and to celebrate the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.”

Also joining the 75th celebration at San Diego Comic-Con are Marvel’s leading merchandise partners including Hasbro, Funko, and Jakks Pacific who will be commemorating “Cap” through new collectibles. As previously announced, Comicave Studios will also be offering different scales of replicas of the bronze statue itself at San Diego Comic-Con.  Additional licensees including Mad Engine, Mighty Fine, Freeze, C-Life, Her Universe, What’s Your Passion, Nick Graham, Café Press, Jay Franco, Kiddesigns, HJC Helmets and more will all feature new Captain America merchandise at major retailers this Fall.  These collections will highlight Captain America’s iconic shield and cover categories including apparel and accessories for kids, women and men, home goods, electronics, and toys. There will even be new Brooklyn-themed artwork available for a range of apparel and accessories.

Take a look at the first images of the statue below, and let us know if you’ll be checking this out on the show floor!

It’s finally, finally here!

No, not SDCC, dummy. You’ll have to wait until Wednesday for that. I’m talking about the booth info and signing schedule for the Geekscape booth!

We’ve met so, so many of you over the years, and the greatest thing about San Diego Comic-Con each year isn’t the incredible panels, bankruptcy-inducing exclusives, blink and you’ll miss them celebrities, or you better take pictures because your friends won’t believe you parties, but honestly seeing you ‘Scapists, new and old at our booth, catching up, and really feeling the culture that we try all year, every year, to create and sustain. Every year at San Diego Comic-Con, we meet some new friends, gain a few writers, and have an incredible, re-energizing (and absolutely exhausting) time, and that’s what Geekscape is all about.

There’s always a lot of new stuff going on here at Geekscape. We’ve got some “sick vids” as Shane O’Hare would (probably) say up on GeekscapeTV (and everyone is loving our newest correspondent El Chucho), The Geekscape podcast celebrated its 400th episode (and you can watch the entire, production-value filled video right here) and has made the jump from TRadioV to sister brand ZHollywood; Geekscape Games has lasted longer than anyone thought it would, and has now been running for nearly two years, and the Horror Movie Club podcast is over a year old, and is taking the internet by storm.

Of course, we’ve got some pretty cool stuff going on at SDCC too. We’ll be in the same, familiar booth as last year, #3919, and have an awesome signing schedule which you can find below.

Remember, you can find us at booth #3919 all weeks! We hope to see you there!

Also, we have some sweet, sweet t-shirts for sale, so if you want to represent, you know where to pick one up!

What are you most looking forward to this SDCC?

Tony Kim is also known as “Crazy 4 Comic Con”, the human resource for all things comic book conventions! So of course we’re going to have him on the show to help us prep for SDCC next week! Beyond that though, Tony has launched Hero Within, a new high quality, geek oriented fashion line! We talk a bit about putting the line together and how he is starting with officially licensed Justice League styles! Also, we talk about the psychotic epidemic that is PokémonGO and whether or not it’s just a fad!

We all knew Warner Bros. had reserved a space in Hall H’s busy schedule, but we didn’t know exactly what they were going to be showing, until now.

This year, Conan O’Brien will be moderating the two hour panel. Here’s what they’ve got planned in Hall H:

“Wonder Woman” stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine and Connie Nielsen and director Patty Jenkins.

“Suicide Squad” stars Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach and Karen Fukuhara, along with writer/director David Ayer.

Director Chris McKay and star Will Arnett from “The LEGO Batman Movie.”

Charlie Hunnam, who plays the title role in Guy Ritchie’s epic actioner “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword,” from Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures.

Stars Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, John Goodman, Corey Hawkins and Jason Mitchell and director Jordan Vogt-Roberts of Warner Bros.’ and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island.”

Director David Yates with stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller and Colin Farrell from “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

It’s a great line-up, but you may be scratching your head as to the lack of Justice League. Well, as there are every year inside of Hall H, Warner Bros. is bound to have some surprises in store. Ben Affleck has already stated he will be in attendance this year. So what can we expect? I’d say we can at least get a glimpse of some footage, along with an appearance of the full team on stage. You can find out more details about each film below:

“Wonder Woman”

“Wonder Woman” hits movie theaters around the world next summer when Gal Gadot returns as the title character in the epic action adventure from director Patty Jenkins. Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Joining Gadot in the international cast are Chris Pine, Connie Nielsen, Robin Wright, David Thewlis, Danny Huston, Elena Anaya, Ewen Bremner and Saïd Taghmaoui. Jenkins directs the film from a screenplay by Allan Heinberg and Geoff Johns, story by Zack Snyder & Allan Heinberg, based on characters from DC Entertainment. Wonder Woman was created by William Moulton Marston. The film is produced by Charles Roven, Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder and Richard Suckle, with Rebecca Roven, Stephen Jones, Wesley Coller and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with RatPac-Dune Entertainment, an Atlas Entertainment/Cruel and Unusual production, “Wonder Woman.” The film is scheduled for release on June 2, 2017, and will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. www.wonderwomanfilm.com

“Suicide Squad”

From director David Ayer comes “Suicide Squad,” starring Oscar nominee Will Smith, Oscar winner Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Oscar nominee Viola Davis. It feels good to be bad… Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super-Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Written and directed by Ayer based on the characters from DC, the film also stars Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne, Adam Beach, and Karen Fukuhara in her feature film debut. It is produced by Charles Roven and Richard Suckle, with Zack Snyder, Deborah Snyder, Colin Wilson and Geoff Johns serving as executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, an Atlas Entertainment production, a film by David Ayer, “Suicide Squad.” The film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. The film opens worldwide in 3D, and in 2D, and in select IMAX 3D theaters August 5, 2016. “Suicide Squad” is rated PG-13 by the MPAA for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language. www.suicidesquad.com

“The LEGO Batman Movie”

In the irreverent spirit of fun that made “The LEGO® Movie” a worldwide phenomenon, the self-described leading man of that ensemble – LEGO Batman – stars in his own big-screen adventure. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.

Will Arnett reprises his starring role from “The LEGO Movie” as the voice of LEGO Batman, aka Bruce Wayne. Zach Galifianakis stars as The Joker; Michael Cera as the orphan Dick Grayson; Rosario Dawson as Barbara Gordon; and Ralph Fiennes as Alfred. “The LEGO® Batman Movie” is directed by Chris McKay and produced by Dan Lin, Roy Lee, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller. It is written by Seth Grahame-Smith and Chris McKenna & Erik Sommers, with additional screenplay material by Jared Stern & John Whittington, based on LEGO Construction Toys, in association with LEGO System AS. Chris McKay also serves as an executive producer, alongside Ryan Harris. A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, “The LEGO Batman Movie” will open in theaters on February 10, 2017. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. www.LegoBatman.com

“Kong: Skull Island”

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ “Kong: Skull Island” reimagines the origin of the mythic Kong in a compelling, original adventure from director Jordan Vogt-Roberts. In the film, a diverse team of explorers is brought together to venture deep into an uncharted island in the Pacific—as beautiful as it is treacherous—unaware that they’re crossing into the domain of the mythic Kong.

“Kong: Skull Island” stars Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Oscar winner Brie Larson, John Goodman and John C. Reilly. The international ensemble cast also includes Tian Jing, Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, John Ortiz, Thomas Mann, Shea Whigham, Toby Kebbell and Eugene Cordero. Vogt-Roberts directs the film from a screenplay by Max Borenstein, John Gatins, Dan Gilroy and Derek Connolly. “Kong: Skull Island” is produced by Legendary’s Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni with Mary Parent. The executive producers are Eric McLeod and Alex Garcia. Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures Present a Legendary Pictures Production, “Kong: Skull Island.” The film will be released worldwide in 2D, 3D in select theatres, and IMAX March 10, 2017, from Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

“King Arthur: Legend of the Sword”

Acclaimed filmmaker Guy Ritchie brings his dynamic style to an original King Arthur epic, a sweeping fantasy action adventure starring Charlie Hunnam. Starring with Hunnam are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey, Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Oscar nominee Jude Law, and Eric Bana. Ritchie directs the film from a screenplay by Joby Harold and Guy Ritchie & Lionel Wigram, story by Joby Harold. The film is produced by Oscar winner Akiva Goldsman, Joby Harold, Tory Tunnell, Lionel Wigram, Guy Ritchie and Steve Clark-Hall. David Dobkin and Bruce Berman are executive producers. Warner Bros. Pictures presents, in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, a Weed Road/Safehouse Pictures Production, a Ritchie/Wigram Production. Slated for release on March 24, 2017, the film will be distributed in North America by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures. www.kingarthurmovie.com

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

“Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” is an all-new adventure returning us to the wizarding world created by J.K. Rowling. Academy Award winner Eddie Redmayne stars in the central role of wizarding world magizoologist Newt Scamander, under the direction of David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters. The film opens in 1926 as Newt Scamander has just completed a global excursion to find and document an extraordinary array of magical creatures. Arriving in New York for a brief stopover, he might have come and gone without incident…were it not for a No-Maj (American for Muggle) named Jacob, a misplaced magical case, and the escape of some of Newt’s fantastic beasts, which could spell trouble for both the wizarding and No-Maj worlds.

Starring with Redmayne are Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, two-time Oscar nominee Samantha Morton, Oscar winner Jon Voight, Ron Perlman, Carmen Ejogo, Jenn Murray, Faith Wood-Blagrove and Colin Farrell. The film marks the screenwriting debut of J.K. Rowling, whose beloved Harry Potter books were adapted into the top-grossing film franchise of all time. Her script was inspired by the Hogwarts textbook Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, written by her character Newt Scamander. The film reunites a number of people from the “Harry Potter” features, including producers David Heyman, J.K. Rowling, Steve Kloves and Lionel Wigram. Warner Bros. Pictures has slated “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” for worldwide release in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX on November 18, 2016. www.fantasticbeasts.com

We already know Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman will be making an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con this year, but could a Justice League panel also be on the way?

Justice league

Yesterday, Ben Affleck himself said “We’ll be there,”  in response to a question as to whether or not he’ll be at SDCC this year. While he didn’t outright mention the Justice League film, we do know that the film is currently filming. Another possibility is that Affleck will be there to talk about his upcoming Batman solo-film.  Still, with Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman already making an appearance there, we might be in for one huge panel.

In any case, with Marvel making an appearance this year, after going MIA last year, SDCC 2016 is shaping up to be big.

Briefly: Following last month’s final trailer for the anticipated film, Warner Bros. has just debuted another, extended TV spot for this week’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

The spot features (somehow) more new footage, and really drives home the fact that these two want to (but won’t) tear each other apart.

In the film, “fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs.  And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.”

You can take a look at the spot below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theatres on March 25th!

http://youtu.be/fnGC7BoH6P8

Briefly: Now that Deadpool has come and gone (well, it’s still very much here, based on its continued box office performance), all eyes have now fallen onto the second gigantic super hero flick of 2016, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

We already know that the film, which is now just over a month away, is set to be (definitely) long, (probably) too busy, and (likely) a damned good time, but some fresh news states that the home video release of Dawn of Justice will feature a we-wouldn’t-have-guessed-it ‘R’ rating.

Nope, it’s not going over-the-top ‘R’ (or how-the-hell-is-this-14A-in-Canada) like this month’s Deadpool, noting that the film is ‘Rated R for sequences of violence’.

Whether Snyder and company were deliberately shooting for this rating, or simply riding on the coattails of Deadpool at this point is uncertain, but in any case, color me interested to see just how this version differs from the Dawn of Justice that we’ll be seeing next month.

Are you looking forward to the film? How would you feel about the ‘R’ rated home edition? Sound out below!

Briefly: Yesterday gave us our best look at Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice yet via the film’s final trailer, and today Warner Bros. debuted three slick new promo photos for the anticipated feature.

Two of the images feature… well, Batman v. Superman, while the third image features a somber-looking Bruce standing atop some rubble.

Take a look at the images below, and be sure to let us you if you’re looking forward to the feature! Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theatres on March 25th!

PROMO2

PROMO3

Briefly: Can you believe that it’s nearly here?

Yep, we’re just over one month away from the heavily anticipated release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Warner Bros. has just released an intense final trailer for the upcoming feature.

This is probably the best look at the film we’ve seen thus far, and at this point I simply can’t wait to line-up on March 25th. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: With every new clip, TV spot, poster, and teaser released thus far, I’m getting excited as hell about the March release of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

A new, 90-second trailer for the film has just hit the web, and while it’s mostly footage that we’ve already seen, it’s a well edited look at the film that also features a few small surprises.

In the film, Fearing the actions of a god-like super hero left unchecked, Gotham City’s own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis’s most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it’s ever known before.

Briefly: Following the explosive new trailer from earlier this month, Warner Bros. has just debuted four new character posters for next year’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

There’s a new poster for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, with another one-sheet focusing on the trio. Aquaman and the other four thousand (hyperbole) characters that are set to debut in the film, however, are still nowhere to be seen.

You can take a look at each image below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the feature. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theatres on March 25th!

Briefly: It’s been a long time since we’ve seen any new footage come out of Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and I’m beyond happy to say that the production’s long silence ended tonight with an awesome new, albeit brief look at the film during tonight’s episode of Gotham.

It’s crazy to think that we see a new teaser, trailer, TV spot, or image for something like Star Wars: The Force Awakens seemingly every single day, and yet Warner Bros., Zack Snyder, and company have done an incredible job keeping so much of Dawn of Justice a secret.

The video was announced in a Tweet promoting Gotham‘s just concluded mid-season finale, and even if you’re not a fan of Fox’s Gordon-focused prequel series, it was certainly worth the watch for the new teaser alone.

Damn this looks cool. Take a look at the new teaser below, and be sure to let us know just how much you’re looking forward to March 25th, when Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice finally hits theatres!

You’ve seen CJ Draden at Comic-Con before. That fella painting stunning art on supremely bright white glass that always attracts a crowd? That’s him. He’ll be at this week’s New York Comic-Con as well as the Vienna Comic-Con later this year. If you’re going to NYCC, look for CJ and say hello. If you’ll be in Austria, say hallo.

Early in our conversation, I ask CJ how his new book, The Wooden Heart is doing. A departure from his typical superhero art, The Wooden Heart is his stylish take on the classic Pinocchio. In so few words, it’s doing pretty well. “I’m pretty happy with the response,” he tells me. “I’ve been fortunate to have Stan Lee endorse the project. That was a big change in the interpretation of how I was going to go about, being an artist. It would change anyone’s perspective of themselves.” Stan “The Man” Lee telling you he likes you’re work is a heck of an endorsement.

CJ Draden & Stan Lee

Another project of his, Atlas, represents another departure from his typical work you see at Comic-Con. “I think that at any given point in time someone decides to do something with their life, start a project, change a career, do something different, I think it marks their current comprehension of their life, and their surroundings. I think that’s true when an artist creates something, because of the things that you’re interested in or learning about at the time.”

The Wooden Heart and Atlas, CJ tells me, are resonant of specific, super personal times in his life. “I was dealing with a lot of things, and I put a lot of personal things in it. It’s a very personal project. I learned a lot from that. I grew from that and I started taking my lessons and moving on to another point in my life.”

Ahead of his presence at the New York Comic-Con, I interviewed CJ to get a glimpse of what it’s like to be an artist still trying to figure out this crazy world we inhabit.

The Wooden Heart

You said something interesting just know, that “Atlas” was kind of like a turning point for you. Did you always want to be an artist? Or did you stumble onto this career unexpectedly?

CJ: No, I can’t say that I always wanted to be an artist, I don’t really have that clicheé story where people are like “Oh I’ve always been drawing.” I have always been drawing since I was young, but it’s a good thing to bring up because I think that people have a calling, I think if you just make certain choices in life and you stick to what you feel is truthful about you, you’re going to encounter people and encounter certain situations that are going to change you, and lead you in a certain direction.

I did go to college for illustration but I dropped out, it was a struggle, I struggled with this a lot. It wasn’t something that just came naturally, which I was always concerned about. Art is used as a therapy and people enjoy it and it’s always fun to be around creative people. So I was just curious as to why it was so hard for me to do. I discovered myself in my own particular process with the way that I work, and it changed everything. So no it wasn’t something I always wanted to do, but I found a love for it, and I think that the people that follow what I do and support what I do in the past five years, it gave me a sense of purpose. Like okay this is what I’m meant to do, and I grew to love it.

Does it surprise you the amount of support you’ve gotten? You’ve said you’ve had Stan Lee and Michael Rooker praise your work, Whoopie Goldberg too. Does it surprise you that you’ve gained such a notoriety for something you didn’t expect you’d be doing?

CJ: Hell yeah. It’s shocking. Again because I think that in Western culture we have this status quo step by step process of what is gonna lead you to the light, what’s going to make you successful, and that’s through go to college, get a job, start a family, get the white picket fence, all that stuff, and it’s very rare that people promote an outside of the box thinking on how to follow your passions and create a life. So when this started happening I was going to dip out of this, I wasn’t even going to be an artist, but when Stan came around it really changed everything. I was about ready to just stop. I really knew how I was doing so I can legitimately say that I’m still an artist because of Stan Lee. It gave me the spirit to keep moving forward.

Because of all this stuff happening, like being on The View and doing work for Michael Rooker and Whoopie Goldberg and having some interviews with Stan, him endorsing the project, it’s miraculous in a way because I was continuously beat down for being an artist, that’s kind of the standard. Most creative people are like oh you know I was told this would never happen, all my art teachers in high school, my college instructors and peers thought I was a joke, so I left and I started going to the people and they said yeah this is cool stuff, and they kept supporting it, so I just followed what worked, and I just said , okay. I’m going to do what I feel is right.

There’s an interesting parallel between the way you said you lived your life and the way even your art is made. You make your art on glass and that’s a very unconventional way of making art, art. I was curious about how did you arrive at making glass art in the first place?

CJ: That is a very metaphysical and philosophical answer. I tend to over think things a lot, and I get very deep into my own head, and I guess you could say that it is a reflection of myself.

Really?

CJ: Yeah, absolutely. When people, especially some of the things that I’ve noticed when I was in part college, a lot of the things that people were struggling with were transcending information from their imagination to this reality this point of existence through sculptors or paintings or body of work, whatever it may be with a big block of getting that vision out, and I felt this whole heartedly.

So when I started discovering this process I felt that circuit just open up and things just started pouring out that I never thought I could do. So a lot of what I do is purely instinctual and I don’t even understand how I do a lot of it. I feel like I just let go of control in this world that I exist in just starts to pour out and the only way I can really describe it is a portal. When I start carving and scraping and molding and building these shapes into the glass and opening this door into a reality that only exists to me, and allowing people to see into that. I think that’s the best way I can describe it. I think you really have to connect with what you’re doing. You get what I’m saying? You really have to connect what you’re doing.

PrintI’m curious as to know why you gravitate towards the fantasy genre comic book realm, and I can assume that you have some sort of connection there.

CJ: Well it’s a two sided coin in this situation because at the time I started doing this I had no idea what I was doing. I knew that I had discovered something that made me feel like the implicate me, it made me feel at peace. Because there was a lot of depression, there was a lot of different things I was going through in college, and when I discovered this it gave me a sense of peace and I wanted to stick with it. I think that when you find something that you’re passionate about, now you have to figure out what you want to do with it. Especially art, when you have no boundaries, putting yourself in a boundary and committing yourself to a goal, committing yourself can be very challenging, but you have parameters.

So I think the hardest thing was after I discovered something I started building my own process that communicated my vision to people. I needed to do something worth it. So I chose comic-cons because I just went with what worked and people liked the way I did these things that they had been reading about and seeing for years when they were kids, and it was painting a joker, painting a batman, this is pretty wicked, it’s pretty rad. I just kept doing that till I figured out myself inside of that.

At one end of the spectrum I had no idea what I was doing, but at the other end of the spectrum I knew I was going towards something I just didn’t know what it was, and I felt that it would present itself when it was ready, I wasn’t trying to force it. So I have done a lot of the comic work and I have grown up with that stuff, so there is a personal connection with that, but in the same light there does come a point in a persons life where you have to make a step for what you do, and put your own messages out there.

We all kind of grow up reading about Batman and Superman and these traditional archetype stories then you eventually have to get into a point where it’s like, this is what I do. So it’s a little bit of both. I think we all have connections to these archetypes but there has to be a point where you bring something to thee table. I think everyone felt my journey, it doesn’t matter what career path you’re on.

Do you hope to leave your own creations, your own creations to the table? Do you hope to create something that another “CJ” in the distant future will create works of?

CJ: I don’t think it’s viable for a creative person to think about themselves that way. I think what that does is stops you from moving forward. If I were to allow myself to believe that a character, a creature, a project that I worked on is going to be the next Sandman, then there’s no room for improvement. So I think that as long as you look at everything as a learning experience, and you commit to doing something and you finish it, you’re always going to find something that you need improvement on.

So even if I wanted to see myself as this type of hypothetical person that we’re talking about, I don’t want to think that my rational mind would believe it. You don’t learn anything from the things that you don’t finish, and you never move forward on to something else if you don’t learn anything. So there’s always something to learn, and I’m always putting myself in this retrospective self reflective process. So even if I wanted to see myself, I just wouldn’t like “I’m going to be the next so and so.” I don’t even think I would believe it.

What’s next after New York Comic-Con? What do you hope to do next?

CJ: I have a few other different shows that I’m booked for through out the year, like there’s a big horror convention down in Orlando that I used to do, I haven’t done it in four years. One of my friends, Tony Todd who was Candy Man in Final Destination, is going to be there, so I decided to pick up the show, and go see him, and kind of retouch with some people back in that side of the country. I actually got invited out to Vienna for a major launch of their convention. There’s a big demand over there for the Western art and super heroes and there is a big comic book scene, but not a convention scene. This is going to be like the huge launch of their San Diego Comic-Con. So I was invited out to do this show.

I’m pretty stoked about it because every year, and this actually ties in full circle to what we were talking about, was like where does Atlas come from, every Christmas and New Year’s I have this tradition where I travel abroad, I spend New Year’s in a different city around the world. This past new years I went through Greece and Atlas and this other project, The Zero Mirror comes from my love of philosophy and anthropology and ancient culture, because I love learning about what makes us tick as human beings. I use that as like a platform psychologically to build projects off of because there is so much in the implicate of human being that can serve as creative forces. Because motivation is the driving force to anything we do in life.

So I like learning about different anthropological aspects of cultures so going to be there for Comic-Con is going to be fascinating because it’s going to help allow me to go there for the summer I worked but also see a different part of the world I haven’t seen. There’s Vienna and there’s Prague over there, I’ve always wanted to go there. So I’m pretty stoked about it, it’s always fun to go to a place where your senses, the five senses are completely active.

It’s very rare that we ever get to experience that because we are so focused on responsibility past, present, and future, and where you can just shut off and you’re in survival mode. You don’t speak the language and geographically you have no idea where you are at, and I think it’s going to be just cool.

Briefly: With just over one week remaining until the ninth season of Doctor Who premieres (and the entire internet goes crazy), BBC has officially released a two minute prologue for the upcoming episodes.

The premiere episode is called ‘The Magician’s Apprentice’, and… I’ve never watched an episode so I have no idea what’s going on.

You can take a look at the prologue below, and be sure to let us know what you hope to see this season! Doctor Who returns on September 19th!

“Trapped and alone in a terrifying Dalek city, the Doctor is at the heart of an evil Empire; no sonic, no TARDIS, nobody to help. With his greatest temptation before him, can the Doctor resist? And will there be mercy?”

Robot battles are awesome, aren’t they? It’s too bad we haven’t seen too many awesome games using the concept in recent years. While games like Virtual On and Custom Robo hold a special place in our hearts, there’s definitely a void that was left by the lack of new content when it comes to this genre. Thankfully, Level-5 is taking the controls and leading charge with Little Battlers Experience, a long running anime and game series that is finally seeing its Western debut on the 3DS this year. Playable at Comic-Con in the Nintendo Lounge, we took the chance to get into a 3-on-3 skirmish with our fellow con-goers.

Little Battlers Experience Preview Screen 2

With a variety of robots to choose from, each cardboard battler has a variety of special attacks, ranged fire and melee skills at their disposal. In addition to general stat differences like speed and attack power, each must be considered when trying to match up the perfect robot with your play style.

Once we hit the field, our teams clashed with the goal of knocking out the opposing team first. This wasn’t as easy as it sounded, since each robot has a limit to how much they can attack before they have to cool down. Try spamming your best skills, and you’ll be left behind as a sitting duck with no way to defend yourself. However, if you manage your skills well while landing flurries of attacks, you’ll gain access to a super attack, that does huge damage to the unlucky opponents who find themselves in your way.

Little Battlers Experience Preview Screen 1

What helps is that movement is exactly what we would expect like something from robot gaming’s past, relying on locking on, circle strafing, and boosting around the field while avoiding damage. The team dynamic made this Vs. mode more interesting as well, since the winning team would usually coordinate their attacks to either defend partners in trouble, or gang up on an isolated foe to rack up those KOs. Attacking wildly would usually lead to a loss, so working together definitely had its advantages.

After walking away with victory in hand, I couldn’t wait to try more. If you’re a fan of games like Virtual On, then LBX is looking like it will definitely scratch that mech battle itch. With an expert team like Level-5 behind it, would we expect anything less? All I know is with the awesome looking robot design and fluid game play, this title is high on my radar.

Little Battlers Experience will release for the 3DS on August 21st.

Holy crap!

What?

Sorry, I mean—holy $#!%!

Did you eat my sacred burrito? I was saving that for an emergency.

What kind of emergency?—your trainwreck face?

This article got derailed before it even started.

The debut of this Deadpool trailer in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con was so beyond amazeballs that we need to invent a new expression! People were freaking out! There were tears!

Fantastico?

Briefly: Still feeling mixed about Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice? Even after that much better SDCC trailer? Really?

Well, maybe this new batch of stills from the latest issue of Empire Magazine will help.

The stills feature (naturally), both Superman and Batman, as well as Wonder Woman (in Diana mode). Supes definitely looks pissed in one of the shots, and we also get a great shot of Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne getting ready to suit-up.

You can take a look at the images below, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited for the upcoming film! Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice hits theatres on March 25th, 2016!

E3 has come and gone, but I have to say that the insane action of Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 still has a pretty strong hold on me. Once we hit the Anime Expo floor and noticed an updated build with even more characters to play with, we couldn’t resist putting our ninjutsu skills to the test for a second time, with the addition of series mainstay, Kakashi, to the previously established cast of Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Obito and Madara, the bigger story was seeing all three Hygua children as fighters as well. While Neji and Hinata are expected at this point, Hanabi, Hinata’s younger sister who has only ever been playable in 2008’s Naruto Ultimate Ninja 3 as somewhat of a joke character, makes her big return to follow up her prominent role in The Last: Naruto The Movie. We took this opportunity to play as her alongside the rest of her family, and came across some surprises along the way.

Hanabi essentially uses altered versions of her family’s attacks, consisting mostly of chakra sealing open palm strikes. Her version of Neji’s Kaiten still envelopes her in a protective shield that blows away any opponent caught in its radius, but unlike her older cousin, she travels across the stage while performing the move. This allows her to corner enemies who are attempting to flee, creating a different set of strategies both when fighting as and against her. Similarly, Neji himself uses many of the hard hitting 8-Trigrams techniques, using his fingertips to assault his enemies’ weak points. Not to be outdone, Hanabi has her own more elegant version, which serves to be just as effective. If up close and personal isn’t your style, Hinata brings in the long distance combat. While her strikes aren’t as punishing as the rest of her family, she makes up for it with her 8-Trigrams Vaccum jutsu, which launches a huge amount of force from her palm, attacking opponents at long range.

Naruto UNS Hinata

Even if each member has their own strengths and weaknesses, it’s clear that the three are at their best together. As with previous games, creating a three person team of characters that have close relationships with each other can result in some unique Ultimate Jutsu attacks. This is no different when it comes to the Hyuga clan, who can cover for each other quite well when dropping in for support attacks. Once its time to activate their ultimate attack, the team doesn’t disappoint, surrounding the enemy at all sides and pummeling each of their chakra points. If three wasn’t enough, the head of the clan, Hiashi Hyuga, drops in to help deliver a four pronged finishing blow, all with the amount of flash that we’ve come to expect from the series.

So it’s safe to say that the Hyuga Clan are as bad ass as ever. Who else do you want to see make the cut in what might be the last Naruto game? Let us know in the comments, then check out the latest trailer, which also reveals the big bad of the series, Princess Kaguya, in her video game debut.

Between Skylanders, Disney Infinity and Amiibo, all three formats have made a killing through selling their versions of game compatible toys, with the latter creating a full blown Amiibogeddon. Considering the wild success of these Toys To Life franchises, it was only a matter of time before the Lego brand decided to take their own crack at the genre.

Lego Dimensions Screen 3

Longtime Lego game developer Traveler’s Tales hopes to bring their platforming prowess and trademark charm to Lego Dimensions, a title that brings numerous worlds together to create one huge collectable gaming experience. Including series’ such as the DC Universe, The Lord Of The Rings, The Simpsons, Back To The Future, Portal, (as in Valve’s Portal,) and so many more, will we have room on our shelves, (and enough money in the bank,) to open up to a fourth collection? We were invited to get some hands on time with the game at San Diego Comic Con to find out if its worth it.

The demo was a strange mash up of characters that we would never have imagined would share a game together. Try to picture this; Gandalf, Scooby Doo, Batman, the 13th Doctor from Doctor Who, Portal protagonist, Chell, and The Lego Movie‘s Wyldstyle, (with a cameo from Homer Simpson), running through one of GLaDOS’ test chambers, complete with her taunts through the PA system and adorable turrets who look to rip you to shreds. Yet, in the world that Lego Dimensions has established, it makes perfect sense. What was especially noticeable about having so many characters on screen at once was the fact that unlike other games in the genre that typically restrict you to two characters at a time, you can bring in as many characters and vehicles as you can fit on the portal.

Lego Dimensions Banner

On the subject of the portal itself, this base is divided into three sections. The back section is where the world is placed, which much like Infinity‘s Play Sets, is a piece that unlocks the single player world that players will traverse through. Characters and vehicles littered the left and right side in front of it, but this set up wasn’t just for show. Some puzzles required the characters to grow bigger or smaller depending on the situation, which was achieved through moving each Lego person onto the respective side that was assigned the proper power. Using the base as part of the game play is an interesting idea, one that brings a level of interactivity to the game that its competing titles lack.

lego_dimensions_7_605x

Yet, despite these unique features, the core game play is exactly what we’ve come to expect from a Travelers Tales Lego game. The platforming, movement, stage progression and even combat felt almost exactly like any one of the many Lego titles that have hit the market over the last ten years. So if you pick this up, expect to fill a stud meter, destroy objects in the environment to rebuild them into new items and solve character specific puzzles. The advantage that Lego Dimensions has however, is that unlike the standalone games that typically have a half a dozen character types that have unique puzzle solving abilities, this one has the potential to offer many more than than. Chell for example, is the only character that can use the Portal Gun, which was necessary to transport the team from one spot to another at times.

Lego Dimensions Screen 1

With so many characters already announced, I can only imagine what kind of possibilities they might bring to the game. Then again, more characters means more money to spend, so we hope you have that cash ready! At the very least, each game piece doubles as a real Lego set, so once you finish the game, the fun can continue by making new objects with the pieces provided and integrate them with the rest of your real sets. Or you can just display them, if you’re more like the Will Ferrell type. Either way, gamers and collectors alike will want to keep their eyes peeled and their imaginations open when Lego Dimensions launches on September 29th, with the starter set bundled with Batman, Gandalf, Wyldstyle and the Batmobile priced at $99.99.

Last year when we played Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, this game about gamers trapped in a game felt hindered partially by its slow pace. This issue is looking to be fixed in its upcoming remake, but would new installments learn from this mistake? It seemed obviously so in Sword Art Online: Lost Song, the upcoming PS4 and PS Vita title that looks to move Kirito and friends into a more fast paced, action focused affair while maintaining the illusion of an MMORPG. How well does this new system translate into the game? We put our monster slaying skills to the test in a brief demo at Anime Expo and Comic Con 2015 to find out.

Sword Art Online Lost Song Screen 1

For the purpose of the demo, Kirito and an AI controlled Asuna and Leefa were thrown into a huge, wide open field.  Littered with monsters both on land and in the sky, it was up to us to take out as many monsters as possible within a 10 minute time limit, just enough time to dig deep into what this new world has to offer. On the subject of how big the field is, Lost Song puts the power of the PS4 to good use, never encountering any slowdown despite how much was going on at one time. I found myself stepping away from fights and just flying high enough to enjoy the scenery, watching all the chaos going on below.

Speaking of flying, Kirito can now switch between land and air battles on the fly. Him and his team can now activate their attacks at will, coming off much more like an action game compared to previous SAO games, giving us plenty of ways to take down all kinds of threats. In order to keep the MMO feel, special attacks are still set to Macro style quick commands that are brought up by holding the shoulder buttons. Certain attacks would deliver huge damage to even the toughest enemies, but would also cost more ability points. If you have no points, you’re stuck with standard attacks, so in typical RPG style, you’ll have to manage these closely if you want to make sure to take out your biggest foes. When one person isn’t enough, delivering enough damage will give your team the chance to activate a triple team attack, inflicting huge damage and team boosts along the way. Keeping an eye on instant messages on the side of the screen will keep you clued in on what their status is, and sending across an encouraging message through emotes can only help!

Sword Art Online Lost Song Screen 2

If this sounds like a lot to take in, you’re not alone. My biggest issue with Lost Song in these early stages was that there’s so much to do, that it made the controls confusing to remember. Rarely feeling intuitive, there were plenty of times where I would get knocked down from the sky and slowly fall to the ground for what felt like ages until I figured out how to recover. Finding the right attacks and commands in the heat of battle often led to pressing the wrong one, keeping me from finishing off the giant dragon in the sky that I had worked so hard to take down. With more time and practice, this issue is sure to fade, but expect a decent learning curve when you pick up the game this fall.

Sword Art Online Lost Song Screen 4

All in all, Sword Art Online: Lost Song feels like a step in the right direction. Its faster paced game play is definitely a lot more fun, and if the controls can be ironed out, we have the potential to have a great game on our hands. As always, keep an eye out for updates as they become available, and feel free to leave any questions in the comments!

As the years have gone by, Dragon Ball Z games have gotten bigger and fancier, with numerous 3D fighters on nearly every console imaginable. It’s a long time since the days where the only way you could get your Super Saiyan gaming fix was to buy expensive imports and mod your consoles. Still, some of these old games had an undeniable charm that gamers who experienced them still swear upon, but thanks to Namco Bandai, it will be a lot easier to bask in the glory of 2D DBZ this fall with Dragon Ball Z: Extreme Butoden for 3DS. We got our hands on the demo at AX this year, and put our power level to the test.

Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden Screen 1

Promising over 100 characters that serve as both battle and support players, everyone from Baba to Launch was spotted in between your Goku’s and Vegeta’s, showing that it really runs deep with the history. The demo allowed us to put together teams of three after choosing between Goku, Vegeta, Teen Gohan, Piccolo and Fat Buu. Each character had their own value, which is the cost one will have to pay when putting their team together. If you don’t have enough points, you’ll have to replace your stronger fighters with the Krillin’s and Yamcha’s of the world. For this version however, the number was set so high that it didn’t restrict our ability to choose who we wanted.

Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden Screen 2

Once the fights started, it was immediately noticeable that it shares some of its mechanics with its 3D brethren while bringing in the foundation of a 2D fighter. The X and Y buttons are pressed in sequence to set up combos, while the A button shot energy blasts and the shoulder buttons guarded and charged up Ki. If you want to set off your character’s signature moves, certain combos have to connect to activate some flashy looking 2D animations to match up with the gorgeous character sprites, despite being a little pixelated. Tapping the character portraits on the touch screen allowed us to swap characters at will mid battle, helping us mix up the fight when we were backed into a corner. The battle ended once the entire opposing team was defeated, leaving our set of warriors standing tall.

Playing Extreme Butoden really took us back to a simpler time of anime fighters, and it was an exciting (ki?) blast from the past. Promising an updated roster featuring everyone from Golden Frieza and Beerus to Yajirobe and Oolong and everyone in between, there’s sure to be enough content to please DBZ fans both young and young at heart.

Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butoden Screen 3

Pre-ordering from Amazon will net you a download code for Dragon Ball Z: Super Butoden 2, an SNES game that was previously a Japan only release, in addition to six bonus support characters, so if you like what you see, that seems like the place to buy from come October 20th.

The stereotype of the unattractive/bland female nerd/geek has been changing quite a bit. One group that shows you can be sexy and a geek is the SuicideGirls. They put on a titillating burlesque show at San Diego Comic-Con and I was able to speak with Missy Suicide who founded the SuicideGirls in 2001!

use0709152355

What is it like working for SuicideGirls?

It is a dream come true, an all consuming dream that takes a ton of work, but a dream none the less. I still come to work everyday with a smile on my face and love what I do. Our brand encompasses so much, there is always something new and interesting and challenging to work on. Whether it is the Burlesque Tour, booking it, promoting it or coming up with new numbers. Working on a new movie or going through the site to find interesting blogs, group topics or events to feature on the main page of the site. Meeting girls who are visiting from around the world. Arranging to go to a shootfest in a fabulous foreign location with dozens of girls or trying to convince Cameron Stewart that now is the time to write the next SuicideGirls comic book. Or the 3 million other things that encompasses a day, it is all a fun and interesting challenge.

For those who may not know, what is SuicideGirls?

We’re a group of girls who have been publishing provocative nude photos online since 2001. We celebrate a different kind of beauty than what you see in the rest of media. There are about 3000 SuicideGirls and we have about 15 million followers across our social media accounts. We publish books, we make movies, comic books, and we put on the most popular burlesque show in the history of the United States.

You have a burlesque show at Comic-Con. Why don’t you tell me about that? What brought SuicideGirls to San Diego Comic-Con?

We have been coming to Comic-Con for almost a decade now. We are always super excited to do Comic-Con every year. It is the most fun show as it brings so many true fans together from around the world. It is people who love geek culture in all forms, pop culture, comics, cosplay, gaming and everyone exists together in this happy utopia for 5 days. It’s insanely crowded but everyone is so cool to one another it isn’t overwhelming. You can kind of just get caught up in the flow of things and know that no matter where you look there will be something amazing to see, a girl dressed up like She Hulk, The Lego Booth, Black Milk booth, your favorite comic artist or the cast of Game of Thrones just walking by, there really are no wrong turns at Comic-Con.

We try to bring our A game to Comic-Con. We try out more numbers and dancers at Comic-Con than we do on our Fall Tour, so the show is a bit longer and more involved than our touring show. It’s also a bit more unpolished and we bring some geekier themes to see how the audience reacts. The energy of the Comic-Con crowd is not easily duplicated. It is one of our favorite shows to play all year.

What is different about the SuicideGirls’ burlesque show vs traditional burlesque shows?

The SuicideGirls: Blackheart Burlesque show is a pop culture themed show. Each number is our homage to something that we geek out about movies, tv shows, comic books, video games, you name it. It takes the same sexy spirit of classic burlesque and updates it with a kick ass, eclectic, modern soundtrack and highly choreographed routines from some of the most gorgeous unique beauties on the planet. It is impossible to leave without a smile.

How long have the SuicideGirls been doing burlesque?

In the same way the photos on suicidegirls.com take the sexy spirit of classic pin-up photos and creates a modern version of femininity; we wanted to put our own spin on classic burlesque and bring the same confident energy that we conveyed in our images to life through our geeky, fun filter. When we first put out our SuicideGirls Burlesque tour in 2003, we were the only people who were doing non-traditional, non-old fashioned burlesque on a large scale. We were excited to put on a sexy performance that didn’t involve feather boas and songs like Hey Big Spender. We wanted to use modern music and references to modern pop-culture but still put on a show in the spirit of old time burlesque. Now, a dozen years later, there are a lot more non traditional burlesque acts around, and some of them are doing really fun and different kinds of shows. The Star Wars Burlesque is a great example of just how diverse and non traditional the Burlesque scene has become. Also, look at the spectacle performers like Lady Gaga put on at live shows. People have seen a lot and it’s much harder to show them something that really feels new and original. So, clever Quentin Tarantino Burlesque numbers and a leather pants AC/DC striptease is just not enough to wow people these days. We really had to take the spirit of pop-culture modern burlesque that we pioneered over a decade ago and up the production values, sexiness and performances by a factor of ten. It’s the same kind of Burlesque show we used to do, but we have executed at a much higher level in almost every respect: dancer abilities, costumes, choreography, everything.

SuicideGirls attend conventions and often have a booth. How many conventions do they attend a year and which ones?

We attend quite a few comic and tattoo conventions throughout the year. Hell City, WonderCon, SDCC and so on. We go to about a dozen cons a year. We love coming to conventions and getting to meet our fans face to face. Plus we get to have our own fan girl moments at cons with the other exhibitors 🙂

Anything you would like to add?

I think that covers it!

Thank you!
These ladies are phenomenal dancers! Their burlesque show definitely has a modern/edgy feel to it. The choreography is impressive; the group numbers and the solo performances are fantastic! The other thing I admired was when the show was getting started, host Katherine Suicide talked about what the photography/video recording rules were for the evening and her co-host Sunny Suicide interrupted saying that the audience could take pictures or videos of anything. Sunny went on to say that not all the angles and lighting would be flattering to the girls but that it was okay because they are all real women. These ladies are so comfortable in their bodies and that is the real treasure of the show – to see their confidence and their joy while they do what they love.

Throughout all their successes with first and third party titles for the 360 and One, Microsoft has never been able to fully embrace indie gaming. Sure, they own and heavily support Minecraft, one of gaming’s most popular indie titles of all time, but can that still be classified as an indie game; knowing how big of a development team actually works on it now?

Fear not indie fans, because for the past two years Phil Spencer and company have been trying to make it up to fans with their new indie service simply titled ID @ Xbox. This year at E3, Microsoft showed off many new and interesting ID @ Xbox titles, but one of them stood out more than the others.

Cuphead 4

Enter Cuphead, a quirky platforming shooter game that’s stylized as if it was a cartoon that came straight out of the 1930’s. Developed by just two brothers, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, Cuphead is the brother’s first venture into the indie games scene with their studio, Studio MDHR. I had the honor of being able to try the game out at the Xbox Lounge at Comic-Con (When the insanely long line allowed it.) It seems like Microsoft has a lot of faith and confidence in Cuphead, but is there more to the game than just its old timey art style? Thankfully, I can say without a doubt, Cuphead not only has a lot more charm than just its art style, but it’s sincerely one of the most fun indie games I’ve ever played.

Story and Gameplay

The story is very simple, but kind of twisted. Two anthropomorphic characters, Cuphead and Mugman, decided to play a game of dice with the Devil. They end up gambling their lives, and in a cruel twist of fate – lose. The Devil agrees to let them live; on one condition. They must do his bidding from now on. So, now it’s up to our ‘heroes’ to destroy whoever the Devil tells them to in order to gain their freedom back.cuphead and mugman

From there, you’re given the chance to access a quick tutorial level and then about 3 actual levels. For the sake of keeping the line moving, I decided to play with a second player and only play one level which was the garden. In this level, you must defeat both a giant potato that shoots dirt clods and worms at you and a giant psychic carrot with three eyes that shoots carrot missiles at you. If that sounds crazy to you, that’s because it is. The controls are super simple and very responsive. You have your standard jump and attack buttons, but you also have a dash button and a change weapon button so you can experiment and see what kind of projectile works best on that enemy.

Cuphead 2

It should be said that Cuphead might not be what some people are expecting it to be. For starters, yes it’s a platforming shooter, but there aren’t really any “levels” per say. This game is more akin to what you would find in a boss rush mode of a game. While that may sound intimidating to some newcomers, don’t let that dampen your experience. Even if you aren’t the best at modes like that, the developers have made it very accessible for newcomers. One way they do this is by making the attack patterns of the first couple of bosses you play very repetitive, so that it’s easier to remember their attacks.

Cuphead 3

Closing thoughts

At the end of the day, I can’t say enough good things about how amazing Cuphead is. From an amazing art style to its very easy pick up and play controls, Cuphead is looking to be one of my all-time favorite indie titles right next to Shovel Knight and The Binding of Isaac. Cuphead will be released on Xbox One and PC sometime in 2016.Cuphead 4

Casting news just keeps rolling in!

After the announcement of a slew of new characters coming to Arrow and The Flash when they return this fall, The CW announced that Central City’s speedster is getting one more meta human to face off with. Only this one is Rated R.

Retired WWE Superstar, Adam “Edge” Copeland, has been revealed to play Atom Smasher. As a former hero who developed dark tendencies after his mother was killed, it’s unclear as to whether or not Copeland will be a tortured former hero, or a straight up bad guy for Barry and his friends to take down and illegally imprison. What is clear from CW’s comments to Comicbook.com is that Atom Smasher will be a force to be reckoned with.

“One of the most powerful enemies we encounter this season, Atom Smasher has come to Central City to kill The Flash.  His incredible strength and ability to grow to enormous size makes him more than a match for Flash and the entire S.T.A.R. Labs team will have to come together to find a way to defeat him.”

As a huge wrestling fan, it’s great to see Edge’s acting career gaining steam post retirement. With Haven and now Flash as part of his resume, it’ll be exciting to see what direction he takes the character in when he debuts.

The Flash returns for its second season on October 6th.

It seemed impossible. But then, most wonderful things did until someone accomplished them.

And so it goes with MTV bringing The Shannara Chronicles to cable television in January 2016! It’s a rich and ambitious production that knows it’s entering a post-Game of Thrones TV landscape where expectations are higher than ever for television to rival the production values of films with big budgets. Additionally, keeping with the Game of Thrones comparison, there is a rich tapestry of 25 books and counting from author Terry Brooks’ various series set in the world of Shannara—a post-post-apocalyptic fantasy realm set in the far distant future where magic has resurfaced.

Let’s kick things off with a gander at the Official First Look trailer screened at Comic-Con this year:

Clearly, you’re stoked. I can tell because I’m stoked too. Before we get too far however, it seems that most of us have been pronouncing Shannara wrong all this time—Terry Brooks explains:

This is a case of, “You made your bed, now lie in it.” For years I have insisted readers should pronounce the title in a way that feels natural to them. I have avoided glossaries, insisted majority rules, and watched the larger number of readers pronounce the word SHA-NAR-UH. So when I brought this up in a meeting with the writers, they simply said, “Well, everyone says it SHA-NAR-UH. So we will, too.” End of discussion.

SHANE-AIR-AH? SHAN-ERA? SHH-ANAR-A? Guess we won’t ever know what he actually has in mind unless we’re able to track him down at an official reading or convention.

Sticking with a focus on the show here, if they pull it off well, it’s set to help fill an epic void on television right now that only the afore mentioned Thrones is currently servicing. Before that was Legend of the Seeker, remember that one? For all it’s shortcomings and rough edges, Seeker was the only thing available on television to scratch a very specific itch. Upon its cancellation that fantasy-void felt deeper and darker than ever—until Thrones came along. Holy moly, did it ever come along—with a bang. . . or a chop, or a stab, or a naked. . . Anyway, nothing against Thrones being just what it is—I’m a big fan—but I could use a little more fantasy entertainment with a little more magic to really scratch that itch good. I’m happy to say it’s looking like The Shannara Chronicles is poised to do just that.

Couple quick thoughts on MTV itself: Does no one there remember what the M stands for in MTV? Guess it’s kicking a dead horse to say it’s not “music television” anymore—only bemoaned by those who were alive before 2000 but it still feels like it bears mentioning.

Between this and Teen Wolf, I guess MTV now stands for ‘Magical Television’!
—Jonathan London, The Original Geekscapist

Along those lines, one request of the network: Squeezing the latest pop songs into Teen Wolf works fine but please don’t do that for this fantasy set show devoid of Auto-Tune, nightclubs and Coachella. Maybe feature some funky classical-type groups, chamber ensembles or really out there orchestras if you wanna do some music tie-ins. I don’t know—what do you guys think?

Wait!—someone get MTV on the line. Maybe these insane freaks are available:
